Some Uzushiogakure/Danny Phantom shit for y'all
What if Kushina felt when the barriers fell at Uzushio?
What if it sent her sprinting as fast as she could towards her first home?
What if she made it, but after the city had fallen?
What if in her grief and rage as she sat amongst the blood of her people, her family, she activated a long forgotten seal buried beneath the city?
The blood seeping through crevices to channels, flowing down the intricate seal and finally dripping down into a tomb.
Drip.
Drop.
Her chakra, her rage, the power of the Nine Tails as he relishes in her anger shines like a beacon from the center of the village.
It too seeps through the cracks.
All the way to the tomb.
Bright green bursts through the cracks beneath the lid.
______________________________________________
Kushina's rage whipped a storm about her.
The rain hid her tears as it pelted her small form, knees scrapped from when she landed hard on them.
She screamed, bending forward until her bare forehead-
The threw it so hard it lodged itself in the column of the Gates of Konoha when they tried to make her stay.
was pressed to the ruined mosaic of the village center, pounding her fists against the ground.
A sudden chill, the heaviness in the air of someone holding carefully leashed power, and a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"Child, what happened here?"
She jumps into a ready stance, a kunai in each hand.
"Who are you?"
Green. That's the first thing she notices, brighter than the leaves of any tree in Konoha.
White, then black. His hair floats as if in water and his armor appears ancient, older than the Warring Clans era. He wears no headband, but a circlet that appears made of ice. He is also floating about a foot above the ground and the rain seems to pass over him as though his mere aura kept the downpour away.
"I have many names, but of all I prefer Danny."
Kushina blinked. "What are you?"
The being, Danny, seemed to ponder for a moment. "I suppose the closest thing you would have here is a god."
That would explain the power and the fact my hair is all on end.
She licked her lips for a moment. "What are you the god of?"
"Protection, longevity," he pauses for a moment, uncertain, "Death."
"A shinigami?!" she hissed "I should have expected one to be here."
"Again I'll ask, what happened here?"
Kushina's face went entirely blank as she set her arms by her sides, hands still clenching the kunai in a white-knuckled grip. She looked out over the ruins of her birthplace, her home.
"Uzushio fell. I don't know yet who did it, I just felt the barriers fall and by the time I got here, it was deserted."
The being watched her, bright, bright, almost too bright, green, flickered across her, eyes settled on bright red hair.
"You are an Uzumaki, are you not?"
She jumped and turned back to the being. "Y-yes."
Danny grinned and began to float towards the Kage's office. "Well, not all is lost. It may have been a long time since I was sealed, but I should be able to find everything necessary. First I'll have to find the cardinal points seals to set the foundations back together, and then we'll get about the resurrection seals."
"R-resurrection seals?!" Kushina stumbled after him, entirely out of her element for once.
"Oh, yes, I forgot to mention, one of my many names."
"And what's that?"
A smile with too much teeth and vengeance behind his eyes turned back to her.
"Uzushio."

"The Uzumaki thrived in raw power. They liked being admired and revered at the same time, just like the sea. And they were mesmerizing. At a single glance, one could easily be enchanted and terrified by the vastness and the power that resided in them."
In short, The Uzumaki were children of the sea born with maelstroms in their blood.

Note
I can’t stop thinking about the kinda shit the people of Uzushiogakure would eat, though? Their cuisine, their food traditions, etc… Obviously a lot of seafood (likely both raw and cooked alike), and given how connected they are to the sea, and with the idea of them Needing more salt than others, I could see a popular tea for them being konbu-cha (kelp infused in hot water and sometimes salt, a rather savory and apparently salty tea!), but what about specifics?
Obviously they’d probably eat a lot of sushi and sashimi, but what kind? Do you think they’d often eat poisonous and lethal fish and other ocean life, what with the god killing thing? Would it become a common delicacy for them to eat things like fugu (a highly toxic blowfish, if prepared incorrectly) with little prep, even or especially raw? Is that toxicity just like zesty seasoning to them, or a flavor most can’t comprehend?
What’s the more popular cooking method in Uzushio- Steaming, grilled, frying, something else? Why would it be that popular, and what would work best in that environment?
What about alcohol- Do they favor sake? Shōchū? Something else? And other drinks- What kind of teas would they have?
Just! I’m sorry for rambling but I’m a Nerd and Uzushiogakure gets me Every Time.
Don't apologize! Details like this are something I get caught up in too!!
I think I've said it before but when it comes to relating Uzushio to a real place I, personally, tend to very loosely model Uzushio off of Okinawa.
So you have that influence plus the general nature I tend to give the Uzumaki.
There were other Clans too on Uzushio of course, but the Uzumaki ruled from time immemorial so their preferences influenced things a great deal.
For beverages: Konbu-cha served either plain or with Uzushio brown sugar for those who want a hint of sweetness. Water, obviously, though serving it with slices of fresh fruit and/or sprigs of mint mixed in is also common. Various fruit juices from native fruits are also popular, especially with children. The Uzumaki also have been known to drink sea water both casually and medicinally as they require higher alt levels than other Clans do. Flower teas are also popular, specifically fire-lily and hibiscus teas.
Traditional alcohol on Uzushio is awamori, which is distilled (like shochu) instead of brewed. The Uzumaki are known for making and consuming a specific type of awamori called hanazake which tends to be at least 120-proof and flammable.
Like you said seafood is the backbone of the cuisine in Uzushio with Clans like the Uzumaki having the ability to eat even the most poisonous of fair without too much in the way of preparation.
Fugu, stone and lion fish, as well as certain sharks are all common foods for Uzumaki that most other Clans do not consume regularly if ever. Young Uzumaki are often fed higher concentrations of normally poisonous dishes to help them develop a healthy constitution.
Crab is a common meat source as well, since the Uzushio spider crabs are prolific, breed quickly and easily, and grow to unsettling sizes.
Sea turtle used to be a common dish too but Something Happened in the past and Uzushio stopped all consumption of sea turtle meat.
Pig is also a very very common meat in Uzushio as the island is the perfect place for wild boar to flourish. There was an entire Clan, in fact, who was in charge of the cultivation of Uzushio's boar population.
Steaming and hot stone grilling are the most popular cooking styles in Uzushio. There's also an abundance of hot and cold soups. Frying tends to be reserved for desserts and specialty dishes.
Bitter melons, taro, ube, coconuts, papaya, and bamboo shoots are also also common.

Uzushiogakure
Now since I’ve been pulled into the Naruto fandom and have decided to worldbuild Uzushio, I’ll lay out some headcanons of mine and of things I’ve read from fanfics that I absolutely love.
These are specifically for a story I plan to write soon and so some of my worldbuilding is not canon at all. This is specifically made to push the story forward that I want to make.
* When Kaguya initially introduces chakra to the world, the Uzumaki clan already exists in what present day called Uzushio. They are stone workers a few families large that settled there out of a desire to get away from there war torn world. They learned how to navigate the dangerous whirlpools with their ships. Uzushio is settled in a shallow valley ringed by a large volcanic mountain range. The front faces a large bay which is ringed by several large islands.
When chakra settles into the world, a combination of the power of the whirlpools and large basins of magma under the earth draws a larger then usual amount of chakra into the bay, forming the spirit of Uzu. The Uzumaki make contact with the spirit and their souls and all their like-chakra descendants are bonded with the sentient chakra. This make it so that when the Uzumaki die, their spirits are able to stay on the earth until they want to move on. Only the Uzumaki are able to see their spirits, not even branch families that come from the Uzumaki and make their own clans can see the spirits.
With the latent chakra in the air and how much has gathered in the bay, the Uzumaki and the 4 other clans that make up the future Uzushio are granted longevity and vitality, with the Uzumaki living up to 150 year and the other clans, having come later, living to about 120.
The village of Uzushio doesn’t start out as a shinobi village and doesn’t even get that designation until Konoha is established 1000 years down the line as the first Hidden Village. Instead, they consider themselves a Chakra Village. The only people who can live in Uzushio are clans that can use chakra, as the majority of people who live in the elemental regions are civilians because they can’t use chakra. The people of Uzushio use chakra in their daily lives but are generally doing jobs that civilians do in canon, like being merchants, doctors, blacksmiths, fishermen, etc. But all of this is augmented with chakra abilities and seals. These clans that settled here were not separated and were actually called by the spirit of Uzu, who can sense the dispositions of clans and whether they were a good fit for the Uzumaki people. She called 4 clans that could come together to protect each other.
There was only one main clan that started as shinobi before they came to Uzushio in the first 100 years. They settled to be able to raise their children in peace much like they did in Konoha. But as other shinobi clans outside the Land of Eddys developed their own Kekkei Genkai, they found that their singular abilities was not enough to protect the merchants and clan civilians that wanted to travel as well as fulfill the daimyo and nobles requests. So they offered to train any person who wanted to become a shinobi. With this and other clans having already developed clan and chakra abilities and seals but not using them much for combat, the citizens of Uzushio are easily able to add a military side to their Village.
The Uzumaki were not originally royalty. While a daughter of Asura did marry into the clan and their members regularly chosen as the leader or Seiza (named for constellations who the fishermen followed as guides), they did not become royally until a Uzumaki leader married the only heir of the Daimyo. It was then decided that because of the Land of Eddys only extending a few islands past the domain of Uzushio, the roles of Daimyo and Seiza be merged, with the nobles city still existing and having their roles but the center of the government residing within the city of Uzushio. The samurai were appointed to be the guard of the nobles. Thankfully with the Land of Eddy’s being so small, the nobles have a pretty humble disposition for nobles and are rich off of land trade. Eventually as time wore on, the nobility died out and the samurai clans left for other lands. It was from then on that it became normalized for the main line Uzumaki to raise their children as future leaders of Uzushio from childhood.
Uzu has a big role in how Uzushio operates. Not only does she have to approve of the future leader of Uzushio, but she also decides if one is considered a part of Uzushio. While every child has a seal drawn on the bottom of their big toe at birth as to be able to recognize another Uzushioian by touching them, Uzu inhabits the space of Uzushio from the mountain range to the islands borders, below the seas and above. She also is connected to every body of water connected to the ocean. So even if a Uzushioian dips their toe in a stream in Kiri, if it’s connected to the ocean, Uzu can detect their innermost intentions. So if one marked with the seal but plans betray another Uzushioian, their seal is wiped away from their body and they are no longer considered part of Uzushio.
Thats all for now. I’ll probably explain in further depth who the clans are and other smaller details of Uzushio and it’s culture. But it could go on for awhile.

Uzushio Clan Hierarchy - Senjumaki au!
Tumblr media
Well, as I'm writing Mito and Hashirama's wedding fic, I've decided to finally make the clans that inhabit Uzushio and that are a big part of its population.
- Uzumaki
The Uzumaki clan, the undisputed leaders of Uzu no Kuni, a clan full of true monsters with many skills and an explosive character, from their powerful life force that gives them incredible longevity, their terrifying use of Fuinjutsu, the adamantine chains of great power or their wielding of Yin energy to create and summon terrifying creatures.
Descendants of the Sage of the Six Paths, but not inheriting his philosophy, the Uzumaki searched for a place they could call home where they would not have to worry about fighting over territory.
So they set out to sea in search of a home, they were lucky enough to find an island that they would eventually expand themselves through earth and lava element jutsu.
And in time, some clans seeking a safe haven would seek refuge with the Uzumaki and become their vassals.
Uzushio is an archipelago half the size of Mizu no Kuni, and is made up of five islands.
- Vassal Clans
1.- Bunraku
The first clan to join the Uzumaki on the island of Uzushio. They are direct descendants of Hamura Ōtsutsuki, they did not inherit the Byakugan or the Shikotsumyaku, but they inherited the Ōtsutsuki's love of puppets.
Their obsession with puppets is only comparable to the Uzumaki's obsession with Fuinjutsu, which is why both clans got along like a house on fire from the very beginning.
They consider themselves artists rather than warriors, but beware of anyone who interrupts when they are creating or testing a new toy for their puppets. Their puppets are much more detailed than those of Kaze no Kuni and can move independently. They are also often used for theatres.
This clan also possesses the mysterious rabbit summoning contract and are pyromaniacs on the level of the Uchiha.
2.- Yurei
The second clan to join the Uzumaki. The Yurei clan is possibly the clan with the strongest connection to the Yin element in existence, so much so that they were on the verge of extinction when they were unable to maintain their physical body.
For this reason they swore loyalty to the Uzumaki, so  they would help them with their Fuinjutsu to stabilise their bodies and not become wandering spirits without a body to return to.
Yurei possess the ability to separate their souls from their bodies and become ghost-like beings, so they can fly and move at great speed, they can become invisible and intangible and possess the bodies of other people. However, in this state they are unable to use jutsu as they are pure spiritual energy.
-
The Konjiki and Hoseki clans joined the Uzumaki at the same time. In reality, these clans possessed a great rivalry which resulted in competition between them. They made the mistake of trying to invade Uzushio to make it their final battleground where one clan would exterminate the other.
However, the Uzumaki gave them the biggest beating in history, so both clans quickly swore allegiance to the Uzumaki to avoid being exterminated.
-
3.- Konjiki
The Konjiki clan possesses the ability to use the Metal element and some of their clan members possess the ability to use the Magnet element.
The use of the Metal element is similar to how the members of the Kaguya clan use the Shikotsumyaku, i.e. the metal emerges from their body and then they can control it remotely.
This metal is a great conductor of chakra so it is used for specialised tools and weapons.
The clan still retains its great rivalry with the Hoseki clan, at least now they are not at each other's throats all the time.
4.- Hoseki
The Hoseki clan possesses the ability to use the crystal element, an extremely versatile and powerful element.
This clan has a taste for preserving what they consider beautiful, ranging from the most ordinary things such as flowers or animals to people or body parts such as Doujutsus.
Although they are naturally more powerful than members of the Konjiki clan, it is only when they possess the magnet element that they are truly evenly matched.
5.- Namazu
The last clan to join the Uzumaki, they possess great physical strength as well as a strong connection to the Earth element and Lightning, as well as sensory abilities.
They consider themselves to be the most powerful of Uzushio's vassal clans and often start fights. The clan is also known for its frequent sumo tournaments and has a strong rivalry with the mainland sumos.
Thanks to their contract of summoning catfish they are able to generate earthquakes.

Been reading fics centred on uzushiogakure and absolutely LOVING the idea of naruto living there, leaving konoha of his own free will and choosing uzushio as his home.
Konoha was a shithole to babie naruto anyway and him getting to know his clan's history, going to uzushio, rebuilding the whole damn place, learning about fuuinjutsu, MASTERING it, living there with other jinchuuriki, giving a place to people who don't belong anywhere else, giving them a place to call it their own. This. Whole. Concept. has me in a chokehold
I wish kishimoto delved deeper into uzushiogakure. Really sad that it was barely touched upon when it had so much potential.

Uzushiogakure & it’s Clans
The village was more than just the Uzumaki, they were just the most numerous and the most eye-catching. Uzushio had nine major clans*, each feared for their abilities. There’s a reason it took three hidden villages to destroy Uzushio and wasn’t because Kumo, Kiri, and Iwa were weak.
UZUMAKI (うずまき) — Native to Uzu no Kuni, the ancestors of the Uzumaki have lived in the area for centuries. They were exceedingly charismatic as a whole, leading large and wildly different groups of people to success. The Uzumaki clan was known for its mastery of fūinjutsu, being adept at pushing the boundaries of widely accepted principles and surviving the outcomes. Physically, the Uzumaki had wide renown for their oversized chakra stores and their ability to mold their chakra into unconventional shapes and uses.
CHIKARA (力) — Native to Uzu no Kuni, the Chikara clan has lived there as long as the Uzumaki clan. They are honorable and ancient allies of the Uzumaki and Hasegawa clans and have often intermarried. The Chikara clan favors front-line tactics and specializes in Taijutsu. The Chikara are hot-blooded, happier to join in a fight than stay out of it. Their summons contract is with the Hippos.
HASEGAWA (長谷川) — Native to Uzu no Kuni, the Hasegawa are traditional and honorable allies of the Uzumaki and Chikara. The Hasegawa are negotiators, carefully cultivated to fill in and smooth over the rough edges of the Uzumaki and Chikara, both clans of impulsive emotions. The Hasegawa clan specialized in Ninjutsu, prioritizing Wind nature as a release that helped in messenger and diplomatic matters. Upon the founding of Uzushio, they were valuable in escorting and protecting merchant vessels to and from the island village.
YAGYŪ (柳生) — The Yagyū are natives of Uzu no Kuni, albeit not as established as the Uzumaki. The Yagyū are a collection of blacksmiths and artisans; able to lay seals into weapons and craft weapons that can channel chakra. They also had large chakra reserves, mainly used to maintain the forges and the extensive processes for burying destructive seals in their weapons. Of renown, The Yagyū created Hatake Sakumo's Hakkō Chakura Tō, as well as the techniques that were used to make Sarutobi Asuma's preferred knives.
KAGAMIYA (鏡谷) — Native to Uzu no Kuni; they were an outlier clan in the country until the Uzumaki clan head did the unthinkable and persuaded them to join the fledgling Hidden Village. The Kagamiya are masters of mind games, specializing in Genjutsu and Iryō Ninjutsu, much to the dismay of many when they joined. Due to the large chakra reserves, children of the Kagamiya clan start training their chakra control as early as walking, pressing the duty of control until it came as naturally as breathing.
KOSHIMIZU (越水) —  Originally from Kaminari no Kuni, the clan settled in Uzushio after prolonged running from the attempts of Kumo shinobi to recruit the clan to their own infant village, regardless of the many denials from the Koshimizu clan head. The Koshimizu are sword masters and adept at channeling the lightning affinity through their weapons to devastating effects. The Uzumaki shared secrets of fūinjutsu with the Koshimizu, and the Koshimizu made their own style, turning their swords and newly acquired skills with seals to protect the boundaries of Uzushio. They work closely with the Tatsuchi on the village defenses.
TATSUCHI (竜地) — Originally from the lands known as Tsuchi no Kuni, the Tatsuchi clan were nomads who stayed in Uzushio when Hidden Villages were founded, and people grew suspicious if no declared allegiance was visible. The Tatsuchi specializes in crafting Summoning contracts, rebuilding old contracts, and fostering new ones. The Tatsuchi mainly contracted with the Crocodilians, and their tactics show an uncanny nature for laying in wait with traps and springing ambushes. The Tatsuchi worked with the Koshimizu frequently to bolster Uzushio's defenses.
HATTORI (服部) — Originally from Hi no Kuni. A large portion of the clan left in protest of policies the then-current Daimyō was pushing for and never returned, finding that Uzu no Kuni suited them better. The Hattori are a clan of sensors, picking through the ebb and pull of chakra. Outsiders look at their placid demeanor and dismiss them as easy to intimidate and forget: still waters run deep. The Hattori make up a large portion of the backbone of Uzushio, preferring to be drawn to positions of Academy teachers and chūnin administrators.
NIWA (庭) — Originally from Tetsu no Kuni, the Niwa left as more of the country turned toward the honor and oaths of samurai, leaving no room for the shinobi traditions and leaving the Niwa pushed to the edges of Tetsu no Kuni and then out and away. At a first glance, people expect the Niwa to share a close ancestry to the Inuzuka clan of Hi no Kuni due to a common canine companion. Truthfully, the Niwa share ancestry with the Hatake, and their companions are sea wolves.
MIZUGUMO (水蜘蛛) — Originally from Mizu no Kuni, the clan was pushed out of ancestral lands and territory by fear surrounding their 'unnatural' appearance and disconcerting chakra feel. The Mizugumo are innovators and inventors, scientists who are constantly curious about the way of the world around them. The Mizugumo hold contracts for snake and spider summons, and a small subsect of the spider contract holders have developed techniques to utilize the spider silk for armor, making them increasingly in demand as armorers.
*(All clans except for the Uzumaki clan are original creations named after some real life Japanese clans.)

Evil Author Day!
February 15th is an opportunity for authors to be a little bit (or a lotta bit) evil by sharing snippets from WIPs, idea files, etc., with the understanding that there is NO GUARANTEE WHATSOEVER that these stories will ever be completed.
Read at your own risk!
WIP Title: Mikoto the Dragon
On the first of June, Uchiha Shiho carefully lowered herself to the ground and winced at the tenseness of her back muscles.
It was a balmy day, without a wisp of cloud but tempered a little by the stirring of the breeze coming off the nearby coast. They were close to the sea now, only a few days out from Uzushio territory, and Shiho was confident that they'd get there before it was too late for dinner. Not that time had ever stopped her stomach.
"Are you alright?" Kagami, her lovely - but sensitive - husband asked for the tenth time in as many minutes. "You're looking a little flushed, and-"
"Shunsuke-kun is wandering off," Shiho interrupted with all her patience. Which, honestly, wasn't too much with her due-date looming in three weeks' time.
Kagami hissed a breath, chakra fluttering as a shadow clone scampered off in the direction of their wayward son - who had taken to walking with a bit too much enthusiasm and a strange talent for escaping his harness - before crouching down to dig the sealed waterskins from Shiho’s abandoned bag. Which she had carried herself, because she was a Jounin even when pregnant (and Kagami had put absolutely everything in a seal anyway so the weight was barely anything).
They were taking a risk with travelling this close to her due date but Shiho had been adamant that they arrived in Uzushio in time for the birth of Arashi’s fourth child; his three sons were extremely excited, since the age gap was over ten years and they were hoping for a girl, and the due dates had lined up so nicely with Shiho’s own pregnancy. Shunsuke had been born in Uzushio, after all, when Shiho’s first time had all but crippled her with nausea so bad that she’d demanded that Kagami stay with her in Uzushio for the final two months. As it was, they were pushing it a little closer than Kagami was comfortable with, this time around.
"I'm fine," Shiho belatedly replied, realising that Kagami was absolutely waiting for an answer and holding the water bottle hostage until she responded. "It's just a lot of weight on the front, you know?" Shiho paused before the rim could touch her mouth, mood souring at the reminder. "Of course, you don't actually know what I'm talking about… I’m expected to carry your child for nine months and the Clan thinks that gives you the right to name them? Where is the appreciation, Kagami?"
Kagami had a lot of practice defending himself on this particular front. "Honey, you named Shunsuke-kun and we both picked the options this time around. You know I'd take my turn to carry the bump if I could-"
"They kick all the time," Shiho shot out. She leaned back on her hands, bringing her knees up to brace the weight better. The grit bit into her hands, face wrinkled in disgruntlement, and her loose, comfortable travel clothes dampened with sweat. Still, under the yellow and green leaves of the grove surrounding them, she made a lovely picture.
Kagami sighed a little, lovesick fondness warring with resignation. "In the middle of the night," he supplied.
"In the middle of the night! I can't lie back any more, my spine is killing me…"
"We bought the lounging chair for this reason."
From between the lines of trees, Kagami’s clone returned with a disgruntled, fussy captive. Shunsuke’s hat was knocked asque and, every time the clone tried to fix it, the one-and-a-half year old batted at it again.
"I feel sick and aching, I genuinely forgot how intense everything feels from the first time," Shiho continued to lament. Kagami took pity and plucked a nearby piece of fruit for her, which she graciously accepted and immediately bit into. "They press so heavily down on me and my legs are really aching."
Kagami felt his own brows furrow at that. "Have we been going too fast, honey? We should be travelling however is best for you, if you want to rest for the final stretch then-"
"I’m fine," Shiho laughed abruptly, expression clearing like smoke in a swift wind. "You fussy, dear man! It's just a little intense, I must've not been keeping as active before this as I thought. My pain tolerance is high, you know," she wagged a finger teasingly and Kagami's mouth curved upwards despite himself. "This body is a machine… and it's currently working on a baby!"
Kagami leaned up and accepted his son from the clone, which then set off to secure the perimeter. They'd been out of war for over nine years now - nine years since… well, since Tobirama-sensei had died - and the roads were as peaceful as they'd ever been.
But caution was instilled in their bones and Kagami would always choose safety over not being able to be sorry (and being the one to survive an attack was the cruellest fate).
"But you've just said you're in pain," Kagami sighed. "I wish you'd told me sooner."
"I'm telling you now…"
Shiho played politicians, civilians and fellow Shinobi alike like fiddles  but, around Kagami, she’d never been one to hold her tongue. It was the annoying lining between her brutal honesty and her determination to never show weakness that meant that she complained about trivial things that didn't bother her too much but would never breathe a word if something affected her more deeply.
"Let's have a break for a bit," Kagami suggested. Now wasn't the time to pick a fight and it wouldn't have been worth it anyway. He turned his face down to catch Shunsuke’s swinted eyes. "You want to see the trees, hm? Hide and seek?"
The toddler understood that well enough - it was nothing more complicated than saying ‘no’ or ‘wait’ but those were mysteriously beyond Shunsuke’s comprehension - and starting squirming excitedly until Kagami relented and let his feet touch the ground.
Shunsuke was off like a rabbit. A very slow and possibly drunk rabbit.
Kagami’s own knees ached a bit as he straightened and trotted off after his son. Surely they weren't supposed to start feeling old in their twenties, right?
Shiho waved him off with a huff of amusement, something in her face expressing ‘better you than me in this heat’, and she propped herself against the nearest trunk instead. The fruit was delicious, sweet and sticky and just on the cusp of overripeness. She ate two more, polishing off her waterskin and using the last few drops in an attempt to wash the syrup from her fingers with limited success.
Kagami - loudly wondering where the imp had escaped to - and Shunsuke - squealing delightedly - remained in range but just hidden amongst the rows of trees surrounding Shiho's spot. She closed her eyes, lids flushed red and pink against the bright sunlight, and tried to unwind as she listened.
"Where is he?" Kagami called, a playful edge to his voice that his enemies would never think him capable of. His teammates and friends would definitely know better. "Where is the little monster?"
Shunsuke’s responding giggle was addictive, infectious. Shiho’s flattened mouth relaxed into a smile.
Lulling herself into restfulness didn't really work. Every time Shunsuke screamed, even when clearly with joy, Shiho’s pulse jack-rabbited in response. Eventually, she realised her shoulders were drawn up tight and her jaw had been clenching itself. Her sandals had carved grooves in the dried earth and, with a kind of distant recognition, Shiho realised she’d been bracing down on her legs for quite a while. In fact, her thighs had begun to ache even more as time crawled by, until it was worse than training or a bad period, and the next thing she knew she was exhaling noisily through her mouth. The dragging sensation worsened, extending up her hips and the mound of her belly, right before a wet sensation blossomed between her open legs.
"Oh Kami," Shiho breathed, the words sounding half way to hysterical laughter.
"Where… aha! There he is!"
"Kagami!" Shiho shouted, too surprised to register the irony of her timing. "The baby's coming!"
Uchiha Mikoto was born at sunset, three weeks early on the road to Uzushio, and in the middle of a plum tree orchard.
"I feel like she did this on purpose," Shiho laughed with the healer, brought from Uzushio by one of Kagami's larger crows and having arrived just in time to help with the actual birth.
Behind them, the shining golden sun slowly sank into the water, waves washed as crimson as the sky and glittering as the sea churned against the rocks.
"I think you might be right," Kagami agreed, and neither were any the wiser.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
When Mikoto was ten, Uzushio was besieged and, within mere hours, swallowed by the sea.
It took her mother with it. Her father, Ambassador Uchiha Kagami, was slaughtered by enemy nin as he tried to reach Konoha for emergency aid. His body was found, unrecognisable, and Mikoto and Shunsuke had very little of either of their parents to burn on the ceremonial pyre.
Kushina lost her home, her people and culture. Konoha was shocked to its core, the reality that Uzushio - brilliant, ancient Uzushio that had sealwork so old than none alive could read it anymore and fuinjutsu masters who could rewrite reality, Uzushio that was their sister-Village and Uzushio that had been torn to pieces in a single night - was gone. It was their shame, the spiral that appeared on the arm of all Konohan uniforms, and the coldest of comforts.
Nothing could fix what had been done.
Konoha had failed, Uzushio had fallen, and Konoha wasn't strong enough to retaliate.
Mikoto didn't think Kushina would ever forgive the Sandaime for not being able to protect Uzushio… or to avenge it.
(She knew she never would.)
And the world was a totally different place afterwards.
Happy Evil Day!

From personal experience, coastal people and island people tend to eat spicy food, drink, dance, and sing, and generally just revel a lot. We're chill but also deeply emotional and passionate. We respect the ocean a lot, calls her mother in some form. Also tend to be very spiritual and food is also associated with spirituality. The same things we use for revelry, food, alcohol, dance, music etc we use for spirituality as well. Alcohol is usually local and tea and coffee are life. We play games on the beach and children love games where you stand in a circle. I don't see why the Uzumaki would be different.

Random Naruto AU musings/fanfic ideas incoming:
OK so, I was listening to Naruto theme songs in my room via speaker to drown out the sounds of my mother/housemate having a private appointment downstairs via zoom. (As you do)
And I started to think of how Asuma's death kind of represented a turning point where the konaha 12 are not kids anymore, things are getting serious, main ensemble members are drying, ect.
And I thought, the other thing like that in the original series was the death of the third homage. Exept even that didn't hit as hard because he was old and stuff. Then I realized one big opportunity lost with his death: the person was likely to maybe someday tell Naruto the truth of his parents, especially since he's the one who made it classified in the first place.
Here's where the AU comes in: I was trying to think of scenarios in which the third would have allowed Naruto to know about his parents during the time before the thirds death, and had a thought: there's a bunch of fics out there of Wave having some connection to hidden Whirlpool village, Uzushio, either neighbors or even that they were protected by/allied with Uzushio before the village destruction.
So what if, during the wave arc, Tazuna and the other villagers reacted when they heard Naruto's last name, being overjoyed to hear that at least one Uzumaki survived. Being hush hush about it because they don't want Gato to know because having an Uzumaki present threatens his standing.
Eventually they get Naruto alone with some of the older villagers who express their relief and exitment that there are still surviving Uzumaki after the destruction of Uzushio.
Naruto is so confused, poor kid. These old people are almost acting like he's some long lost relative or something, something about his last name, the destruction of some place called Uzushio? And what's this about asking about his family? Are all these old people senile and mistaking him for someone else?
The villagers confirm his last name is Uzumaki, and that they are talking about his clans home village of Uzushio, which was destroyed during the last war. What do you mean you've never heard of it? Is your ancestral homeland surely your parents would have mentioned it.
And then they learn that he's an orphan left all alone in the world, nothing of his family save his name and the symbol on his back. He tries so suggest that maybe he's not related to those Uzumaki, only to be rebuffed by a team of geriatrics, each pointing out some innocuous feature they swear is an Uzumaki trait, from his speech pattern and large amount of Chakra, to his ears and his chin.
By the end a group of Wave villagers old enough to remember Uzushio in its prime have mentally adopted Naruto and started telling him stories of Uzushio and the Uzumaki Clan, even trying to determine who he might be related to.
Eventually an old woman remembers a friend of hers, who's daughter was sent away to Konoha years before the attack, to be a Konoha ninja. they figure that must have been his mother, and naruto puts together that he was born around the same time as the nine tails attack of the village and they come to the conclusion that his mother probably died in the attack, weakened from childbirth, maybe even dying to protect her baby, and that he must not have had a dad in the picture for him not to be claimed afterwards.
Maybe they even introduce him to a village elder who's actually an Uzumaki and married into Wave decades ago, even long before the attack, and as she took her husband's name and wasn't a ninja, no one caught on. Maybe it Turns out to be his great aunt or something.
I'm imaging the bridge being named something representing the return of the Uzumaki clan.
Also, when the missions over and is time to return to Konoha, the entire village of Wave tries to fight for custody, especially his Great Aunt, who insists on accompanying them back to Konoha to interrogate the Hokage as to her grand nephew's treatment.
Maybe his newly found great aunt or distant cousin decides to move to Konoha, maybe with a bunch of her kids and grandkids giving Naruto a bunch of cousins. Or maybe he just gains a single elderly Uzumaki refugee from Wave.
I feel like Sasuke would be pretty mad/offended on narutos behalf over having the knowledge of his family hidden from him, since at least Sasuke has his memories and his clans belongings.
It'd be pretty funny if however many Uzumakis end up in the village, they all more or less adopt Sasuke as well as Naruto.

Balance feels him long before the time of his birth, even before Kushina reaches to the Whirlpools. It feels him before he truly develops, possibility and light, intertwined with the very fabric of the universe's existence, red energy coiling tight into Kushina’s gut, into her very self, a responsibility she grew into with years of crafted instructions passing down inadvertently.
Kushina feels the second the foreign chakra in her veins shifts and knows .
(The third chapter of More Than Leaves in the Tree is up!)
