Urban fantasy pets on New Year's Eve:

Griffin - Stubbornly pretending that it does not care and just...doesn't feel like going for a walk or a flight right now. For no reason at all. Just because it happens to feel like staying inside right now

Salamanders - Keep trying to climb up through the chimney of their fireplace because the airs smells so unusually delicious tonight. Must be bribed with hard coal to keep them inside

Kirkegrim - Circling its home in protection, thereby roaming through the dark like a ghostly canine shape in the smoke and dust filling the air, its red eyes lit up under every flicker of light from above. Probably absolutely terrifying the neighbours

Hippocamp - Still just chilling in the water. Really not that bothered, as long as it can dive down deep enough when there's too many flashing lights

Dragon - Thinks roman candles are a delicious snack. Chews on sparklers. Will end up spitting out spinning balls of coloured fire. Must be locked inside the house and is so so sulky about it

Jackalope - Having a very bad no good horrible time due to all the sudden noises. Prefers to burrow away or hide against its human. At risk of bolting at accidentally driving its antlers through random objects

Phoenix - Escaped its aviary. Soaring among the fireworks. Having the time of its (current) life

Valkyrie Introduction - POV Shu

"Oshi-san, Oshi-saaaaan..."

Shu sighs. "What, Kagehira."

"My elbow is loose."

Shu whips his head around, dropping his current sewing project to cradle Kagehira's arm in his hands. He doesn't need to cast an illusion-dispelling spell-- he's got enough clear-sight that it's unwarranted-- so he gently twists the ball joint in its socket, checking for debris and-- yes, there's the first signs of permanent deterioration in the material and magic.

"Kagehira, you need a new body."

Kagehira jumps and makes one of those noises, the ones that came out of him not carving precisely enough, and he considers.

"What kind of body would you like?"

"I'm happy with whatever Oshi-san will give me," Kagehira deflects, and oh, that won't do.

"Kagehira."

His partner pauses, frowns, and says, "Wait here."

There's a thunderous racket as Kagehira runs up the stairs. Shu doesn't have the heart to stop him, and fine, he's curious about what his doll's gotten up to in his free time.

(Mika had been created out of a deep wish for a friend when Shu was eleven, and he hadn't known or cared about the rules. The Magicians' Assembly would be very displeased if they found out Mika could create and think for himself.)

Kagehira returns, carrying three different notebooks with an expression Shu pegs as "cautiously optimistic".

He is offered the notebooks, and as Shu is impressed with its contents. There are diagrams and designs as far back as before the War. Has Kagehira been trying to design a body since before he'd decided to become "human"?

"Hmmgh, Oshi-san's in his designing trance again..."

Even with hundreds of variations, there are elements common in the majority of the designs, and Shu picks up his own sketchbook. Mika has always wanted nimbler fingers, so perhaps he should start there...

standing directly in front of (under?) john during the spontaneous unplugged performance of memories due to technical difficulties from this show was honest to god one of the top 10 musical moments of my entire life. the moment at the very end when the sound kicks back in just as he hits the final chorus? i genuinely think i understand what it felt like to be in the crowd at the newport folk in 64 when dylan went electric

#semi unrelated but the contradictory lore/urban legends behind that dylan performance is actually so fascinating to me #theres this general narrative that it outraged pete seeger (including that he tried to take an axe to the cables?) and the crowd booed dyla #and while most accounts have pete reacting negatively the two narratives i've heard are a. that pete's elderly father was at the performanc #and the noise was upsetting him and b. that pete thought dylan's lyrics were too important to be drowned out by the excessive noise #the second one comes from pete himself iirc #and the axe thing seems to come from the fact that another act performing that day was a group of prison singers and as part of their #performance (which pete had arranged) they were chopping a large stump on stage with axes to keep time #so it was likely mixed up narratives regarding that? #also i think they had the director of the festival listen back to the tapes of the crowd booing dylan and he said that they were booing the #fact that dylan was being forced to leave the stage after exceeding his allotted time #so. the more you know! #the mountain goats

Hey, you mentioned a comic called White Noise in the tags of a post, but when I looked it up I found two different webcomics by that name. Would you mind narrowing it down, or sending a link? I'm eternally ravenous for new good webcomics.

Certainly! While I'm familiar with of both of them, I was referring to this White Noise comic. I've been reading it for years and it's lowkey been one of my favorite stories out there, hands down. I really adore everything the creator has done with the characters, the story, the worldbuilding, the creature designs, and how he's grown as an artist since it started.

He's actually on tumblr as well. :)
