Hi, I came across SWS and your art early last year and absolutely love the general aesthetic and vibe. I'm trying to get some people on board to actually run a few sessions but I'm finding it surprisingly hard to come up with both inspiration or just stories and art which have a similar sort of feel. Do you have any suggestions for stuff I could read, watch, look at, whatever that you feel is inspiring?

Finally got a chance to think on this one! Deep down I made SwS because there's not media that scratches all my itches at once in regards to what it is exactly, especially in the TTRPG sphere BUT there are a few core pieces of media/experiences that have banged around in my head that have formed it and may help you with forming the right mood and ideas for the world. -Princess Mononoke was what tripped my love of animism. Masked spirits of the land and such, which ultimately lead to my interest in shinto beliefs, specifically the many kami of various types. Kami of the land, kami of old heroes, kami of objects. It sets the mind ablaze. -Nier Automata hits a lot of themes that are central to SwS. The ruins of an old world being interpreted by those who live in its shadow. What is worth preserving and what sort of future can you forge ahead with those lessons? Are we stuck in cycles of violence or can we declare independence? Aesthetically the ruined cities also echo the atmosphere of the world. -Kino No Tabi (Kino's Journey) is an old inspiration of mine for the various ways that cultures and societies come together and fall apart. For those not familiar its about a traveler who rides a motorcycle from town to town and stays in each town for 3 days, which she's decided is enough time to learn what you need to know about each town. it's a land of societies that exist as islands though, where they accept travelers, yet govern themselves without outside interference. I could gush about it for a while but all you need to know is I have a tapestry of Kino above my bed. There's a good 2003 anime that I recommend before the 2017 anime, though I started with the light novel, of which I think there's only 1 officially translated to english due to copyright shenanigans. -Girls Last Tour is a similar energy to kino no tabi but is also a bit gay -The Earthsea Cycle Novel Series Digs into some feelings about names, identity, and the magic in words that is very SwS-y. -Urban exploration photography of abandoned places such as those in the zone of chernobyl, and abandoned places of Japan are definitely the right aesthetic direction for the ruins of Wake. -Madoka Magicka, specifically the domains of the witches has a feel for the dreamcore aesthetics that surround some of the more powerful major deities, and the magic they hold. -Quick music video recommendations that oddly hit the right mood for SwS are: UKRampage - QUI, ファイトソング (Fight Song) - Eve, 心海 - Eve (Actually most of Eve's music videos), Secret - Harumaki Gohan, I wish I had been midnight. "Justice", Open Mike Eagle & Paul White - "Dang Is Invincible" Ultimately I'm always refining my tastes for what Wake is like and they don't feel complete, but I always wonder if my vision for it will ever feel wholly complete. It's a sort of exploration of my own tastes and conveying them and handing them to others to collab with them. Thumbing through my roots like this is always so enlightening though so thanks for the question!

30: What topics does your oc know the most about? Are these obvious or would these be surprising to others?

Enal: Alteration magic. He has devoted his life to its study, which is no surprise considering that is the type of magic he is seen researching and talking about to others.

Nu-Kinmune: Mirror Logic, which is a given considering Her current status as one; and fashion, which clearly is no surprise - She likes to mirror Her enemies to shreds and look good while doing so.

31: What time of day is your oc most awake? What about most tired? Do they get up at the same time every morning without need of an alarm, or is their sleep schedule all over the place?

Enal: He... doesn’t sleep much. Whenever he does it is usually a short nap, during which he uses ancient magickas to restore both his Vancian spell reserves and himself. Usually, he is quite awake except when his spell reserves are gone, in which case he acts like a walking corpse (even with certain metamagics).

Nu-Kinmune: When not performing Her duties, She tends to have a perfectly normal sleep schedule, and usually wakes up at dawn. Otherwise, She sleeps whenever She can. She feels most energized at day, and most tired in late nights.

32: What five ingredients would you throw into a cauldron to make a potion based on your oc? How would you cook/mix them? What would the potion do?

Enal: A skyshard of the Magna-Ge, a dragon scale, a spell tome, ebony (Lorkhan’s blood), and something blue. One would use Alteration magic to turn each into a powder then mix these powders, heating them into a liquid which is mainly blue with swirls of gold and purple. This potion would allow the drinker to enter some high state of consciousness in which you could perceive both sound and color as tangible objects... or something to that effect. (This is one of the ways Enal sees the world, by the way)

Nu-Kinmune: Any precious gem, shards of a mirror, malachite, gold, and aetherion particles. One would reflect each material onto itself and each other until they are fused together, then alter their state with belief-magic, and the resulting potion would be bright gold and slightly wavy, as if it isn’t really there. Drinking this, would make you dizzy and very unwell unless you were a mer, in which case, it would allow you direct access to the Earthbones, for good or ill.

33: Describe your oc’s favourite environment. Urban or rural? Wild or controlled? What’s the climate like?

Enal: He enjoys large open libraries, spaces between worlds, vast oceans, paradoxical and non-Euclidean spaces. Machinery deep below, clockwork spinning, hum of the rotary, glow of the skyshards, cracking of roots growing up through all of this and on those roots there are newborn crystal flowers.

Nu-Kinmune: Crystal palaces and spires as far as the eye can see; blooming outward like a flower in spring. The air is light and with just the right moisture; breathing its strangely pleasant scent seems to make things dreamy.

34: What would someone blackmail your oc with? Would they be successful in getting what they wanted?

Enal: If you were to blackmail Enal, you would probably blackmail him with the truth that he is not a true god. Of course, he would simply laugh at the thought that you even tried, and erase your memory of knowing this truth.

Nu-Kinmune: Perhaps you would look deep into Her past and find Her unsavory first time with the Thalmor. You would confront Her with this information, you would say you know what atrocities She committed then. And, knowing and accepting the deep weight of Her actions then, you would be successful.

35: How easily does your oc get attached to things? Does everything have a sentimental value to them, or do they see nothing as more valuable than its practical use? What about with people/animals?

Enal: If it is not in any way magical or a gift, he cares not about it. People however, are different. If their personality is interesting and/or they are persistent in getting to know him, he will, eventually, keep that person around.

Nu-Kinmune: She keeps every new thing She can find, especially if it is shiny and precious; an avid collector you may say. In terms of living beings, it is quite easy to at least speak to Her. If She enjoys the conversation, one may find She considers you friend, or more.

Even if it means forgiving Fang and spending time with a dangerously sexy cowboy-vampire.

Make Me by Parker Blue The Demon Underground series has been a consecutive series of events since the beginning. Make Me take place immediately following the events of Fang Me. We find Valentine Sharpiro still struggling with the change in her powers from Succubus/Slayer to the keeper of the books of Encyclopedia Magicka. Val must hide her loss of powers to rogue vampires, or it could be death sentence. Val is also still stuck in a contract with the New Blood Movement vampires and Alejandro, their area leader. Alejandro wants Val to go to Austin to find out what is going on with the government and the delay in announcing the existence of the supernaturals. Alejandro sends Val, Austin, the vampire, Jack, the last keeper of the book, and Val’s hell hound, Fang, with her to Texas. Shayde, Val’s boyfried, takes himself to Austin to help back up Val. When in Austin, Val discovers the delay is caused by attacks that are believed to be done by a mythical creature the chupacabra. To make it more complicated, Shayde is held by another succubus and a Demon named Asmodeus wants the books so he takes Val’s, best friend, Shade’s pregnant, by Fang, hellhound and Micah, leader of the local Demon Underground, hostage. Fast, easy and entertaining. I really enjoy this series but I do find there is disconnect at times with the characters becoming, in my best terms, shallow. I had a really hard time with Shade’s character and some of Val’s actions. That being said, I wanted to jump right into Dare me to find out what happens next. In the end, Make Me was between a like and really like for me. I received this copy of Make Me from BelleBooks- Bell Bridge Books. This is my honest and voluntary review. Make Me published April 20, 2012.
