But, after that first microdose, while heading off to sleep, I thought to myself, to pass the time, "Hey, wonder if I can imagine an apple any better?" And, uh, I COULD? Unlimited specific apples, no context. I mentioned that to the spouse, and he said, "Can you still do it now?" And, yes. Yes I can. +/-36 hours away from the second tiny dose of mushroom, and I can give you unlimited specific apples, if you need me to imagine that for some reason.

And... It kinda feels nonsensical that I couldn't do that before? Yeah, apples. There's lots. Just pick one. But I know I couldn't. Not even for the sake of a person who would be satisfied with any imaginary apple. Like, I could imagine the shittiest apple and that would be fine, it would be a judgment free zone! But I remember I couldn't do it. I needed a better prompt.

That thing with the apples is not something I've heard about for ADHD, but I did just barely get an internet diagnosis on that (thanks, @kithpendragon), and I only ordered the stuff because my THC vendor has it. In the past few weeks I’ve built a model railroad signal for garden railways with a custom DCC decdoder. Here’s what it looks like:

I’ve heard from a number of people that they thought this was interesting, but they didn’t really understand what I was doing. So today I’ll try to explain the core of it all, this circuit board:

I’ll try to explain why this is the way it is and what it does.

(This whole explanation is aimed at people who have never done anything with electronics before. If that’s not you, then this may be a bit boring. Also, I didn’t come up with any of the parts of this. Most of this is based on things I learned by reading OpenDCC and Mikrocontroller.net. I’m sure I still made a lot of mistakes, though, and they’re definitely all mine and not the fault of anyone on these sites.)

The goal

First let’s talk about requirements. My goal was to build an american signal type “Searchlight”. Such a signal has between one and three lamps. Thanks to a clever electromechanic design that moves different color filters around, each lamp can show different colors - up to three from a total selection of four.

Replicating this system for a model railroad is not practical. I need something else. Having multiple colored LEDs next to each other wouldn’t work; they’re too big and I want it to all look like one light source. There are LEDs that contain red, blue and green in one housing, but that would require a lot of wires quickly that all have to be put in the mast. The solution is this:

This is an “adressable” LED, better known under the name “Neopixel” used by a large american online store. There are many variations from different manufacturers. The key thing is that each LED has a tiny control circuit built right in. It takes four wires: Plus five volts, minus, data in and data out. If you have more than one, you can connect the data out of the first directly to the data in of the second and so on. Connect the plus and minus as well, and you can control almost unlimited amounts of LEDs with just three wires.

The data line has a special protocol that you need to generate. Basically you need to switch it from 0 to 5 to 0 volts again and again at a certain rate; the time it stays at 5 volts (“high”) determines whether you’re sending a 0 or a 1. From these bits you form bytes, which tell each LED what specific color value to send.

Due to this dataformat, you definitely need some electronic circuit controlling the signal, and the first requirements for this are:

Provide five volts DC power

Generate the data for the LEDs in the correct format

The Input

There are a lot of options for designing the input side of things. In my case, I’m assuming the signal is electrically connected to the rails of a model railroad that is controlled digitally. With digital command control (DCC), the voltage at the rails has a constant value of about 15 to 25 volts, larger for larger scales. This voltage constantly flips polarity; first plus is on the left rail, then it goes to the right rail (and minus vice versa), and then back. It’s like AC in normal wall outlets, but with very abrupt changes instead of a smooth sine wave.

This voltage has two tasks. First it supplies the locomotives with power, but it also transmits information. If one of these change-and-back sequences is long, it transmits a “0”; if it’s short, it transmits a “1”. These bits together then form the bytes that form the messages that say things like, “Locomotive three run at speed step 64” or “switch 10 switch to direction left”.

This decoder uses both features. The digital voltage provides both the data and the power. For a locomotive, that is required since the only conductors you have are the rails. This is a stationary decoder, so I could have designed it so that it only uses digital commands, and gets the power from an external power supply. However, I wanted to use the least amount of cables, so I’m using the simple version.

With that, the requirements are fixed. The circuit has to:

Turn the digital power (15-25 Volts, AC-ish) into 5 Volts DC

Read and understand the digital data signal (decode it, hence the name “decoder”) and calculate the colors for the LEDs.

Computation

This calculation is the real key here. The digital signal has a completely different fromat than what the LEDs expect. It’s slower, but also has completely different meaning. At best it transmits “set switch or signal 10 to state 0”. Which color values are associated with that, let alone any blending to make it look nice, are things the signal has to decide for itself. There is no way to build a simple stupid adapter here; I need a complete computer.

Luckily, you can get those for cheap and in really tiny.

The ATtiny85 costs about 1€ depending on how many you order, and it’s smaller than one cent coin (I think in basically any currency), but from a technical point of view, it is essentially a full computer. It has all the important parts anyway. There is a CPU that can run at (depending on the version) up to 20 MHz; half a kilobyte of RAM and eight kilobyte of internal storage for the program. Multiple programs is a bit of a challenge. If you know Arduinos, the ATtiny85 is related to the ATmega328p in the Arduino Uno and Nano. Far less powerful, but cheaper and significantly smaller.

What it lacks are all the surroundings like keyboard and screen for input and output. The chip is designed for applications where this isn’t needed, or at least only minimal things. The software that you write can assign each pin (okay, five out of eight) freely for different tasks: The pin can work as an input, telling the software whether there’s a low or high level of voltage at it (meaning 0 or 5 Volts), or it can work as an output and write high or low values, meaning setting the pin explicitly to 0 or 5 Volts.

There are other options for the Pins as well; among other things it can also read analog voltages and generate them to some extent. But for this task I only need the simple digital high-low inputs and outputs.

These types of chips, known as microcontrollers, exist in thousands of variations by different manufacturers with very different performance characteristics. They are the key part of basically everything that’s digitally controlled these days. Washing machines, everything that plugs into a computer including every single Apple lightning cable, TVs, TV remotes, amazing amounts of parts in cars and so on are all the realm of microcontrollers. The ATtiny85 is, as the name implies, very much at the low end of the scale (though there are smaller ones), and even here, it is a bit out of date. But it is very easy to program and very forgiving of mistakes, which makes it great in hobby situations.

To run, this chip needs around 3-5 Volts DC (some versions like the one here can also run on a bit less) and exactly one capacitor. I’m already generating 5 Volts DC for the LEDs anyway, so this chip will get them as well. That means for all the calculation, only two pieces of hardware are required.

There is some more associated hardware, though, for getting the program (which I’ve written myself) on the chip. For that you need a programmer, a device that you can buy for some money, or make yourself astonishingly easily from an Arduino. It needs to be connected with six wires to the chip. The standard for this is with a six-pin plug, which I’ve thus included here as well. There are standard six-wire cables for this.

You could connect the cables differently, for example with some sort of spring-loaded contacts on some programming circuit board you’d have to build for that, or in the worst case, just temporarily solder the cables in there. But the plug version is both simple and convenient, with the only downside that it makes the circuit a bit more pointy.

how did you pick your food choices for degus? i've been researching and it seems like everybody disagrees about seeds/nuts, forage, pellets, and even what veggies are appropriate as treats.

It's complicated, isn't it? Way back when I first got degus I started with reading degutopia. It's a mostly reasonable resource but then when you move on to degu forums you find people pointing out which things are incorrect. I've also been reading some scientific papers on degus but it can be difficult to muddle through the science speak.

As you read you'll build up your ability to pick out good or bad bits of information, but this takes time and isn't helpful to new owners. I’ve pulled together some information from papers for you here, with references in case you’re interested in reading them yourself. It got kinda long.

Pellets/nuggets

For nuggets some of the things you care about are:

hay as the first ingredient

no sugar (often listed in ingredients as molasses)

availability

degu's preference

aimed at degus

“Captive degus should consume good-quality timothy hay, specific degu commercial food, leafy vegetables and dried herb mix” (Gumpenberger 2012)

“Degus should be fed a low-sugar, low-fat and high-fibre diet. Non-infectious diarrhoea due to a low-fibre diet has been reported to be a common problem” (Jekl 2011)

Resources often say hay, rather than specifying timothy hay or meadow hay, there doesn’t seem to be much of a difference between the two, timothy hay is tougher and the important thing is that the degus are willing to eat it, which is the deciding factor for why I feed meadow hay. 

Alfalfa products can be offered as occasional treats (Jekl 2011), this is as alfalfa has a higher calcium and protein content than meadow or timothy hay.

“Alfalfa meal is also present in the pellets but this is not relevant as the TOTAL protein and calcium content of the pellet is low.” They recommend that degus “may have unlimited daily access to timothy hay. Alfalfa hay should be fed in smaller amounts as a treat or appetite stimulant.” (Bauck 2004) 

The calcium: phosphorus ratio in a degu's diet should be 2:1. In a study where the ratios 2:1 and 1:1 were looked at the 1:1 diet led to high rates of dental disease (Gumpenberger 2012). I would like to note that really there need to be further studies to confirm that 2:1 is the ideal ratio for degus, for example the ratio given for rats is 8.5:5.1 (Gumpenberger 2012).

Seeds/nuts

I can’t find any papers that mention how many seeds degus eat in the wild, the degus international community forum states “Seeds are a part of the diet of wild degus. Their contribution to the overall diet depends very much on time of year and habitat; it can range between negligible and 60%. If seeds contribute up to 20% of the diet of our domestic degus, their calcium values can have a significant impact on the values of the overall diet.” You do have to pay attention to which seeds you feed your degus, but on the basis of this source I would say that it is safe and natural for degus to eat seeds.

Part of my degus base diet is the degu seed mix from rat rations. They also get occasional sunflower/pumpkin seeds and hazelnuts/walnuts as treats. The nuts are given in the shell for extra enrichment and to wear their teeth down, and are given at most once a month.

Vegetables

These want to be low in sugar, as I'm sure you know, the veggie list on degutopia is a reasonable starting place, but scientific papers on degus will specify things like don't feed carrots because they're too high in sugar, which goes on to rule out beetroot because that has a higher sugar content than carrots. 

“In all 40 cases of cataracts in degus, we noted an association with feeding high dietary sugar (simple carbohydrates - fruits, carrots, orange and apple juice, banana, etc.)” (Jekl 2011)

Another option for fresh foods is to give your degus herbs, mine prefer these to vegetables.

Ultimately if you’re not sure about whether a vegetable is safe it’s better to not feed your degu something that would have been safe than it is to feed them something that isn’t safe.

Forage

I haven’t seen any specific mention of forage in any of the papers, but I generally scatter feed anyway. The other part of my degus base diet, aside from nuggets, hay and seeds, is dried plants/flowers. To decide what to feed them I will either go with the degu dried plant mix from rat rations or check individual plants and cross reference at least three sources to confirm that it’ll be safe. Degus should be eating lots of hay, but some eat less than they maybe should so it can be helpful to offer other plants to both keep their gut moving and wear down their teeth.

“If they have not got optimal foraging opportunity, they can develop some stereotypical behaviour and self-mutilation” (Jekl 2011)

Just as a warning for anyone who might want to read scientific papers, they’re not a happy resource. Many of them mention neglect (for example in cases of severe dental disease) or euthanizing the degus (for example to look at the kidneys).

The team behind CryptoTab is anonymous and there is little information about them online.

DailyCoin has found out that CryptoTab is developed by CryptoCompany, a private limited company based in Estonia. The only board member of the CryptoCompany and also of CryptoTab is Vadim Tuulik, the mysterious man with a scarce online history and 5 Linkedin connections.

Listing on app stores

Respectively, the CryptoTab app is available to download from Google Play and Apple Store. Apps listed on both of these stores must go through thorough tests. They have to be verified to be free from viruses and malicious software.

As you may know, both Apple and Google Play banned the cryptocurrency mining apps on their platforms back in 2018. The move was mainly based on the explanation that cryptocurrency mining apps cause battery draining, generate excessive heat, affect device resources, and finally damage the devices. Both companies only allowed crypto mining apps that mined digital assets outside of the device (e.g. cloud-based mining).

Being available on both Google and Apple platforms suggests the CryptoTab browser is safe. However, it does not guarantee CryptoTab is profitable.

Warning of virus

On the other hand, there are warnings online of the CryptoTab browser virus. According to them, the virus may infect the computer and extract sensitive information from all the browsers on it.

The warning also claims that CryptoTab’s software may not be malicious by itself. However, lots of hacker-made versions of it are easily available on the internet (data of May 2020). They may be rebranded versions of it or direct fake copies.

The website that has announced the warning is an online blog and forum, that covers malware attacks, data breaches, and privacy-related stories. It also has no reputation for being a scam.

macOS 11 is a big hit. Announced in June and released in November 2020, this macOS update features the biggest design change in 20 years. No wonder, many want to see it — the sooner the better. Starting November 12, everyone can install a public version of macOS 11.

But there are lots of buts. Just as any major software update, macOS Big Sur might be misbehaving on your Mac. Starting with your Mac being “not good enough” for it. So whether you try the beta or install the public version, macOS Big Sur problems are possible. In this article, we’ll describe all reported macOS 11 issues and the ways to fix them.

How to fix macOS Big Sur problems known so far

macOS won't download

All macOS updates show up in the Software Update section, in the main Apple menu. You should be ready to give your Mac some time to download the new version of macOS. But if it takes hours, or Big Sur won’t download at all, this could be a sign something is wrong.

If you have any macOS Big Sur update problems, here are the possible fixes:

1. Check device compatibility

macOS Big Sur ends support for a few old Mac models that are compatible with macOS Catalina. So before you do any troubleshooting, make sure your Mac can run macOS 11 in the first place. Here’s the full list of compatible devices:

MacBook (2015 or later)

MacBook Air (2013 or later)

MacBook Pro (2013 or later)

Mac Pro (2013 or later)

Mac Mini (2014 or later)

iMac (2014 or later)

2. Boost your Internet connection

4. Fix wrong macOS version downloading

According to many users, when trying to install the Big Sur profile, they end up with macOS 10.15.6. Here’s the solution recommended by Steffen Voglmann on Apple Developer Forum:

Open Terminal > sudo -i > enter root password

Copy and paste the following to command line: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Seeding.framework/Versions/A/Resources/seedutil

Next, copy and paste the following: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Seeding.framework/Versions/A/Resources/seedutil unenroll

macOS Big Sur won’t install

No particular reason why this happens, it just happens. You seem to have downloaded macOS Big Sur, and then it gets stuck during the installation process. One way to solve this might be rebooting your Mac in Safe Mode: hold down Shift while rebooting and then restart the installation process. If this doesn’t help, try resetting NVRAM:

Shut down your Mac

Hold down Option + Command + P + R for about 20 seconds

Wait until your Mac restarts and try reinstalling macOS Big Sur.

Apple also recommends resetting SMC on laptops and desktop computers with the T2 security chip (you can check whether your Mac has it by accessing the Apple menu > About This Mac > System Report > Controller).

To reset SMC on a Mac with the T2 chip:

Shut down your Mac

Press and hold Shift + Ctrl + Option for about 7 seconds (make sure the cable is plugged in)

While holding the keys, press and hold the power button for another 7 seconds

Restart your computer.

To reset SMC on a desktop computer with the T2 chip:

Shut down your computer

Unplug the power cord, wait for about 15 seconds, and plug it back in

Wait a few seconds and restart the computer.

Apps won’t launch or slow down on launch

During the Big Sur release on November 12, many Mac users couldn’t launch apps or experienced extremely slow app launch. Interestingly, even some non-Big Sur users complained about non-Apple apps slowing down or acting unresponsive.

After a few hours of panic and disturbing tweets, it became clear that the problem had to do with app notarization. Apparently, Apple servers were so overwhelmed with Big Sur that it slowed down notarization confirmations. As of now, the problem has been fixed.

If you still experience issues with apps, it might have to do with login items or system clutter. Learn what to do if apps are slowing down here.

Big Sur fails to boot

Some users report they experience troubles with Mac startup after successfully updating to macOS 11. So if you try to turn on your Mac and macOS Big Sur won’t boot, the loading screen seems stuck, or you can’t log in to your account, here are the possible fixes:

Try to force restart your Mac

Check the power supply and plug the charger if it’s disconnected

Use a different account to log in

Boot into Recovery mode and run First Aid via Disk Utility

If nothing helps, go into Safe mode and try reinstalling macOS Big Sur.

One of the common macOS 11 Big Sur issues is battery getting to its low point — faster than before. Here are the ways to solve the problem:

Find out the energy impact of apps. Traditionally, new operating systems feature updated and new apps, which might put extra pressure on your machine. To know exactly what apps are draining battery, use Apple’s built-in Activity Monitor. You’ll find insights on the energy impact of every active (or recently active) app under the Energy tab.

Use iStat Menus for system monitoring. If you want a more advanced Activity Monitor alternative, try iStat Menus. It will show “Apps using significant energy” right in your menu bar. What’s more, the app can monitor a whole lot of different indicators — from CPU to disk usage to memory load.

Get a MacBook battery extender. This is a universal fix. Endurance is an app that can make your Mac’s battery last longer, whatever macOS you use. It slows down apps that work in the background, gradually dims the screen (you won’t even notice this), and lowers your Mac’s processing speed for when you’re working on simple tasks.

First of all, be prepared for a slow download. According to numerous reports, macOS Big Sur downloads much slower than the previous versions. This doesn’t seem to be a bug, so there’s nothing to fix about it. Just make sure you don’t start updating in case you need your Mac in working mode in the nearest time.

And what if the installation went right but your Mac has been slowing down ever after? The problem might be old apps or too many apps working in the background. Here’s what you should do:

Disable login items. This is the first thing to try because too many apps launching at startup hamper your Mac’s performance. You can stop apps from working in the background in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items. Simply check the boxes next to login items and hit the minus button.

Track performance and remove the clutter. iStat Menus and CleanMyMac X make the perfect match when it comes to fixing any macOS Big Sur issues. This is not an exception. Network problems on Big Sur

If your Mac won’t connect to Wi-Fi after the Big Sur upgrade, here’s what you need to do:

Open System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi

Click on Advanced in the bottom right corner

Remove Wi-Fi connections by unchecking the boxes

Save the changes and restart your Mac.

In case your Mac connects to Wi-Fi but the network misbehaves in some way (for instance, the signal seems to be unstable or too low), use the WiFi Explorer app to scan your network environment. It will quickly inspect your Wi-Fi connection and indicate whether there’s any trouble.

If nothing helps, reset your SMC and try reconnecting. We’ve described how to reset SMC on Mac above.

USB 2.0 connection problem

Owners of the new 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro released in 2020 might not be able to connect USB 2.0 accessories like keyboards or mice to their Macs via hubs and adapters. This is not exactly the Big Sur problem and was first reported on macOS Catalina. While Apple has recently fixed it with the 10.15.6 Catalina update, the problem persists on macOS Big Sur. The only possible solution so far is to restart your Mac and try reconnecting.

Menu bar disappears on macOS 11 Big Sur

If your redesigned desktop misses the menu bar on macOS Big Sur, don’t worry. This is easy to fix:

Open System Preferences > Users & Groups

Click on Login Options and type your admin password

Disable the option “Show fast user switching menu as”

Once the menu bar is back, go to System Preferences once again and select Dock & Menu Bar (the new preference pane that lets you show/hide controls)

Disable Fast User Switching to remove it from Control Center.

My dream 1977 console/computer

Imagine it's 1976. Current home consoles are Pong clones, but the 2nd gen consoles are just around the corner.

What would your dream 1977 console have been like (or some other year)?

Keep in mind that if it's too expensive compared to the Atari VCS, then it will fail like the Bally Astrocade. Here's mine, which uses the console itself as an arcade style controller:

Arcade-like 360 spinner and two buttons on the console itself

2K RAM (BASIC cartridge adds another 2K RAM)

No hardware sprites - all "sprites" are software rendered using custom characters

20x12 character tiles; each tile is 16x16 pixels (32x16 with jitter)

320x192 normal resolution, each scanline has 4 colors (out of 8)

640x192 jittered resolution, 15 composite artifact colors

Total of 19 colors - 6 directly supported colors plus 13 jitter mixed colors

Despite being simpler and less expensive than the Atari VCS, the dream system has vastly superior 15 color backgrounds and software sprites. It also has large "arcade style" controllers suitable for placing on the floor/table/lap.

- - - - - SPINNER CONTROL - - - - -

My dream 1977 console/computer integrates the P1 controller into the console mainboard itself. The corded P2 controller is also very large - the size of a keyboard with numeric keypad. This minimizes costs on the 1P option. Initially there are 3 different packages:

1) "1P" budget option - just the console itself, with the integrated P1 controls (spinner and 2 buttons)

2) "2P" option - the console, and a corded P2 controller (spinner and 2 buttons)

3) "PC" deluxe option - console, and a corded keyboard (keyboard between spinner and 2 buttons), and BASIC cartridge

The "1P" option is less expensive than the Atari VCS, although the "2P" package could be more expensive because of the large P2 controller.

The dream console is a single board computer with P1 controls integrated into the main board. The left side has RF output and power connector; the right side has an edge connector for the cartridge and the P2 controller port.

The spinner control is inspired by driving games and Space Wars - steering on the left, along with thrust/fire action buttons on the right. The controls are ambidextrous simply by flipping the console around 180 degrees. Note that unlike an arcade stick being wrenched around, a spinner controller would not impose brutal bending stresses.

A spinner with two action buttons is suitable for a large variety of games:

Asteroids/Space War Driving games Breakout/Pong Vertical shooters (with fast left/right movement) First person shooters like Star Trek Tempest/Gyruss tube shooters Chess/Checkers/card games where the spinner quickly selects square/item. Puzzle games like Tetris and Puzzle Bobble where the spinner is great for quick precise left/right aiming Platformers with fast left/right movement

Still, it is not very good for Pacman, and many games would have to be rethought. Sometimes, it just means a minor adaptation. For example, Missile Command could use the spinner for aiming without range. Each missile uses a proximity fuse to detonate whenever it gets near to a target.

Sometimes, a game must be radically rethought. Gunfight used an 8 way joystick for movement and a 2 way joystick for aiming. The spinner could be used for aiming, but what about movement? Gunfight could be reimagined with a Joust-like fantasy theme. The spinner aims a bow and also turns you around left/right. The action buttons flap and shoot.

This Joust-like fantasy shooter could be the "killer app" for the dream console, offering frenetic gameplay unlike anything else out there.

- - - - - HARDWARE SPECIFICATION - - - - -

For the hardware, I want something that can generate text characters so it can be used as a home computer. To minimize costs, text generation is the ONLY thing the hardware directly does. No sprite hardware is included, and colors are done with composite artifact tricks.

Fundamentally, the graphics are similar to the Apple ][, but with 8 pixels per byte. It uses the Apple ][ idea of half-pixel shifting to boost base colors from 4 to 6. The video chip is extremely simplified, relying upon the CPU to race the beam and do all timing related to hsync, vsync, etc. The CPU is also needed to set SCREEN and FONT pointers each scanline. The CPU is also responsible for DRAM refresh.

During an active scanline, the video chip loads 20 characters and 2 bitmap bytes per character (total of 40 bytes of bitmap, or 256 pixels). This consumes 3/4 of the bus cycles, so the 6502 CPU at half speed. The screen is only active 52% of the time, so the CPU essentially runs at 74% speed. Between scanlines, the CPU updates the SCREEN pointer and the FONT/SHIFT registers. Clever coding can get the CPU to perform other useful work during active scanlines such as drawing sprites rather than just doing DRAM refresh during that time.

Because of how composite artifact color works, all modes have a practical horizontal resolution of only 320 and a horizontal color resolution of only 160. Alternating pixels get smeared into colors, as with the Apple ][ and CoCo.

The two main modes are NORMAL MODE and JITTER MODE:

NORMAL MODE = 320x192 8 colors (4 per line)

JITTER MODE = 640x192 15 colors

NORMAL MODE is 20x12 tiles, where each tile is a 16x16 bitmap (32 bytes). This gives 320x192 resolution, similar to Atari 800 high resolution mode. Composite artifact colors mean that the "color" of each pixel is either green or purple; they mix together to form white. The palette is thus:

BLACK, GREEN, PURPLE, WHITE

This video chip can delay a scanline by half a pixel, like the Apple ][. The shifted palette is:

BLACK, ORANGE, BLUE, WHITE

Additionally, the shift may be jittered every other field. This results in a 1:1 mix palette:

BLACK, yellow, indigo, WHITE
