Apologies if you’ve answered this before, but since you’re such a prolific writer, I am curious: how do you find/make time to write?
Sometimes, between work; cleaning/shopping/cooking/self-care to continue functioning; and time for other hobbies, I feel like it doesn’t get the attention I want to give to it. Thank you!
Oh, I've probably answered it before but if so I don't remember when or what I said :D I think it's a combination of things, some of which are within my control, some of which are not.
For a start, it really depends on how you write. I write in chunks, and I tend to write pretty continuously when I'm at it, there's not a lot of "blankly staring at the page" that some writers have to deal with. I am either Writing or Doing Other Things. I also have a fairly fast typing speed -- last time I tested I was in the 120 wpm range, and given I spent two years doing audio transcription I'm probably faster now. So I can get the words on the page basically as fast as I think, unless I'm on a phone, but even then I'm pretty fast. A significant chunk of Infinite Jes was written on my phone, mainly because while writing it I sometimes didn't have convenient access to a computer.
I'm fortunate in that I have a job that doesn't really take up eight hours of my day, so if I want to stop what I'm doing and spend an hour writing, I generally can. I specifically have tried to take jobs that allow this and avoid jobs that don't, but I grant that's a privilege of being a college-educated white dude. I've worked retail, but I've also often been able to avoid it in favor of jobs where I'm not constantly public-facing and can huddle behind a computer doing god knows what (it's a joy to have a job where nobody really understand what it is you do).
You say I'm pretty prolific, and this year that has been true -- I wrote around 300K words. However, in 2021 I did very little writing at all, and in 2020 I think the only real work I did was on Six Harvests, which is less than 100K words. I didn't post a single fanfic in 2021, which shocked me when I realized it. I'd have to do some data vis to confirm this, but I suspect there was a curve to my output across my 20s and 30s -- I know that I wrote less, even if it was perhaps better quality, as my career began to take off. Work, depending on the kind, does take brain power, or physical energy, or both, from what we'd rather be doing. It can also stimulate it, but realistically that's not super common. So I wouldn't beat yourself up about giving time to work and self-care; those are necessary, and I take more time from writing to give to those as I get older.
I think also as you get older you figure out your rhythms. I am capable of much more physical activity in the morning, and I'm capable of writing pretty much anytime, so I tend to do physical things -- working out, cooking, cleaning -- earlier in the day, then "go to" work, then write in the evenings whether or not I got any writing in during the day. I cook in bulk, so I'm rarely "cooking" more than one meal a day, just reheating stuff I cooked earlier.
Working remotely has absolutely been what allowed me to write so much this year -- and not even the time gained back from commuting, because my commute was short, not quite an hour round trip. But I'm not trapped "at" work -- I can do chores during the day, fuck off and write, even take a nap if I desire, in a way that I couldn't when I was in slightly uncomfortable business-casual and stuck in a cubicle from eight to four-thirty. I could do pretty much what I wanted in the cubicle in terms of reading tumblr, writing, researching, et cetera, but when you're confined to a physical space where you're not super comfortable and sharing it with thirty other people, it's not as conductive to writing.
And like. Also I'm a hermit who lives alone and very rarely goes out.
I don't have a partner or children, I don't have family nearby, I have very few responsibilities and don't belong to social clubs or nonprofit boards or religious groups the way many of my colleagues and friends do. I have a circle of brickspace friends who are fairly tightly knit at this point, but we don't do a lot of like, weekly-brunch or friday-night-drinks or anything like that. I am finding it much, much, so much easier to go to parties and social events now that I'm properly medicated, because I don't feel like I'll be punished by my own brain afterward, but we're also still in the grip of a pandemic, and while we are socializing, it's still pretty constricted. Over Thanksgiving I had two events in two days and loved going to both but by Saturday I was exhausted and happy to stay home.
When the quarantine began, a lot of people found themselves "trapped" at home and very bored, and while I empathized I was also quite confused because my outside-of-work life didn't materially change. How often were these people going out? What were they doing? In a regular year I was home at least six nights a week if not all seven. I go to bed at eight o'clock most nights, by choice. I love my friends and I'm generally happy to hang with them but I don't have a driving need to go out and be with friends and certainly not with strangers more than about twice a month.
So yeah, I wish I could say it's a matter of Making Time To Write or some secret time management trick but the truth is, my prolific output (such as it is; it varies wildly) is a result of a really good job for Fucking Off To Write, not many other obligations, and an obsessive personality. :D There are ways you can adjust your life to give you time for creativity in whatever form that comes, but that's got to be personal to you -- learning your rhythms, learning how to manage your other responsibilities, maybe letting go of some things to give yourself more time for what's important. But it's got to be you looking at your life and making adjustments, there's no single solution to the problem.

I don't think you guys get how scientifically some "witchcraft" MUST be taken or else you can face serious side effects (I am specifically talking about things that deal with herbs, minerals, or other chemical components, especially when they are meant to be ingested, applied to the skin, or inhaled).
Like, I'm locally known for my tea witchcraft, which anyone who has looked into it might more accurately call herbology or a mix of folk knowledge and biochemistry. I stay as up to date as I can on the research, and for things that there isn't enough research for at the moment but have been used for a certain ailment for centuries, I meticulously document every use, the exact procedure and recipe, and any reported effects whether they on the surface seem relevant or not.
I'm reminded of this because of the covid that has been passing around the household, and all the remedies I've been making for one symptom or another, conscious of everyone's health issues and medication. My dad says, "thank you for taking care of everyone, Hal." and I say, "no problem! :)" queue me returning downstairs for almost an hour of washing chemistry equipment.
On tumblr on the rare occasions I share any herb-based stuff I learn, it's all pretty mild. I avoid potent shit that you really need to be careful with. But note that when you get really into it, you start to realize that a lot of the more effective stuff is toxic in larger doses. Because it's like medicine. It's chemically based and it has a potent, significant effect on the human body. You can't take too much. Now, I don't mess around with that stuff irl either unless I am 100% certain of what I'm doing and the situation calls for that level. I also forage for most of my herbs/mushrooms/mosses/etc, and sometimes, the stuff I have access to is the stuff you've got to be careful with.
Did you know that foxglove is great for treating congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation? It's used to make a prescription drug called digoxin for that specific purpose. It's also really fucking toxic, far too much to mess with it at home. More dangerously, the information on the benefits of foxglove is just a google search away! I chose a really obvious example for this, but if you just fill an infuser with any given plant that's supposed to help with [issue] and steep it, no carefully determined dilutions, temperatures (for either the denaturing of certain proteins or preventing the release of certain chemicals) and very specific steep times (mostly to prevent the release of too high of dosage toxic chemicals) you might find yourself in the emergency room or in the ground. Best case just sick for a few days. Or you might happen to be right and feel so much better!
But the point is, you've got to take this stuff seriously if your resident witch/herbologist/homeopathic healer is, and if they're not, avoid participation or do a shit ton of research on your own to make sure it's safe first. If you're doing it on your own, research, record results carefully, ask questions of those who know more, and be prepared to stop any herbal treatment you start. Don't be arrogant.
(I kid you not, my brother is banned from the tea shelves since one time (for context he has tachycardia) he made himself a strong infusion of yerba mate as a study aid, which he knew to do because I make it for myself as a study aid (not now that I'm on adderall) and for those of you who don't know, it's a stimulant thanks to frankly insane amounts of caffeine *when made traditionally* (more than coffee, which my brother is not allowed to have thanks to his tachycardia). Needless to say this ended in an ER trip. (He was ultimately okay, don't worry).)
#oh it's just some herbs!#i'm very sick of people treating herbology like it's just silly beliefs that be can be taken very lightly#like yeah sure. did you check if they interfere with your medication? did you check dosage?#were you super careful to dilute it properly and steep it at the right temperature?#no?#well no shit you're experiencing side effects dumbass#just culturally#none of you take this seriously and spreading that mentality that people should just experiment with this stuff#only some of you push the reality that you have to be careful#it's not silly and any responsible herbologist will do research#please be one of the people who does research and does NOT spread the idea that it's all#'uwu witchy herb correspondences i know cause i saw a list of medicinal herbs for virgos with chronic pain on tumblr'#'measurements? i trust my intuition baybee <3'#sure that's fine with sage and garlic and peppermint and shit#but please#if you have not heard of an herb before in the context of normal culinary use#do NOT order a package of it online or look for it in your woods and then steep yourself a cup of it with no research#eventually that will bite you in the ass#I see a concerning amount of people spreading the idea that anything folk-knowledge based should AUTOMATICALLY NOT BE TREATED SERIOUSLY#wrong reaction#no you shouldn't use it as your sole treatment for a serious ailment#and no you shouldn't accept everything uncritically#but don't treat it lightly as if 'it's all fake anyways lol'#i'm gonna fucking murder someone#and i know the mushrooms to do it with#'oh what's in this' 'just some magical ingredients uwu' *it has amanita and you die in several days after an unassuming stomach ache*#i'm sorry this turned into a rant#genuinely meant to just type a short witty thing on it but that didn't happen#it also turned into a#long post

Not to start shit, but seriously look into the cost of having outdoor cats, both for their health (significantly reduced lifespan) and the effect on the ecosystem. Outdoor cats are more likely to catch/spread disease/parasites, get attacked by predators/shitty humans/other cats, hit by cars, etc. Plus getting lost. And you can't train cats not to hunt, and they decimate wildlife regardless of what you see. Just because it's what you're used to doesn't mean it's good. Cats can be happy indoors.
Few quotes from the Cat Protection page:  “Cats have a natural tendencyto explore so allowing them access to the outside world givesthem mental stimulation and reduces stress.” It increases the space available to them which, as animals, they need plenty of, and it adds more variety to the space available to them. The added stimuli for their senses keeps their brain stimulated and active which is obviously extremely important to mental health. Exercise is also very important for cats and going outside provides them with a lot more opportunity for it.  Cats are usually quite introverted so sometimes they need time and space away from people, an escape from the house. They need to be out in nature because they are animals. Going outside allows cats who live without any other cats to socialise with other cats which is, again, important for mental health.
There’s also the very obvious factor right now that if you kept a cat indoors in this heat it would probably die.
The Cat Protection page cites “rodent control” as well but my cats are trained not to hunt anything (depending on your method, it’s sometimes easier than training them just to avoid hunting birds), still relevant to other people’s cats. You definitely can train cats not to hunt, because I have done it with every cat I’ve ever had, and so has every other household in my family (we’re big cat people in my family). If they have toys to hunt, that takes care of their natural urge to hunt, and if you train them to see that as their target instead of living creatures it goes a long way to stopping them feeling the need to hunt. If you want to learn more about it there are a ton of resources out there on Google and at your local vets.
Interesting point - the original post was about declawing cats to stop them scratching furniture and how inhumane it is. You know a humane way to stop them scratching furniture? Let them outside, where they’re free to scratch pretty much anything they want! Most cats I know don’t scratch the furniture in their homes and they’re all outdoor cats with claws.
Some cats probably can be happy living their entire lives within four walls, just like how some cats are happier with the option to be indoors or outdoors. Just because it’s okay for one cat doesn’t mean it’s right for all of them.
The whole reason people get collars or get their cats chipped is to keep them safe outdoors, so I don’t understand how this is a foreign concept to so many people?? And also cat flaps and outdoor huts for them etc?? Also people who own one cat and get them neutered, that’s so they don’t get too friendly with other cats they meet while they’re out and about. Also as much as I don’t want any anti-vaxxer shit dragged into this, any responsible cat owner will get their cat properly inoculated before introducing them to the outdoors anyway.
There are no predators in the UK (closest thing I can think of is a pet dog) but i don’t know about the US, which is where I’m assuming all the keep-your-cat-locked-in people are from (just cuz a lot of people i come across on tumblr are American and if they aren’t they say so).
Also cats don’t tend to fight once they’re used to each other. The cats in my neighbourhood had maybe 6-12 months occasional spats while they were getting used to new cats on the block when we got ours and since the territories were sorted out there’s been 15 straight years of feline peace. Cats are very calm, docile creatures and they don’t tend to fight much at all.
Regarding cars and unsavoury humans, cats pretty much keep to themselves while they’re out and about. They tend to either stick to their own garden or wander around other people’s gardens, safe from strangers or cars. They stay clear of roads unless they’re crossing them - they don’t just hang out there. Generally speaking, there are cat neighborhoods, and anyone who would mistreat a cat would be easily avoided by limiting the cats outdoor time to supervised only time in the garden until the jerk is caught.
Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to address every one of your points thoroughly. My cats love having the freedom to live their own lives and get really anxious and upset if we lock them in (we kept them both in for a week while Poppy was on meds to make sure she wasn’t throwing up and even Declan, the chillest guy ever, was super anxious and kept crying and clawing at the door and getting sick and having diarrhea and generally being extremely upset which is so unlike him) so there’s nothing anyone can say that would make me put my cats through that.

What Do You Know About SEO?
This set up can be a part of the Analysis engine optimization sequence from WooRank. Many thanks for supporting the companions who make SitePoint achievable.
Lookup motor optimization might be the choice of methods, methods, and methods used to rank very in about the SERPs to spice up some qualified site visitors to a web-based web page. That's the common reply you're going to discover in highlighted snippets once you Google “what is SEO?” And it is not incorrect - it is just a bit incomplete.
The upper, far more exact definition could be “the methods, techniques, and ways utilized to rank quite in seek out motor supreme closing final results in your lookup phrases used by your goal viewers to boost your conversions and achieve.”
Think about it by doing this: You very personalized a pizza cafe using your group, which suggests you go about optimizing your website for pizza-related vital phrases. You happen to be carrying out a very wonderful career, and now you rank inside the greatest ten Google outcomes on your essential phrase “pizza”. The impediment is, you come about for being a location store moreover to your website just isn't optimized for local community lookup, so folks browsing for recipes, or maybe the background of pizza, or maybe the dietary particulars of pizza are receiving you, but potentially not people looking to get pizza employing your local people. It is just a catastrophe generally due to the fact your customers are not locating you when they are probably to transfer right into a sale.
Making certain the right people uncover you in the correct time is exactly what Lookup motor marketing and advertising are essentially all about.
Obviously.
Offered that you might be understanding regarding how to acquire commenced on Seek out motor optimization, you have potentially beforehand recognized that you just basically ought to have it. But, if you happen to be even now all through the fence, let me share several parts that must stimulate you:
So lookup optimization is largely crucial in acquiring your viewers on to your website. But there is an extra truly vital reason for you to absolutely certainly be organization SEO: your opposition endeavor its way also. Meaning not just is our inadequate pizza cafe missing out on existing income, its better-optimized opponents are forming associations with customers, bettering design recognition and repeat income.
Simply because the function of SEO could be to rank genuinely in search for advantages, your first action is often to get the net site crawled and indexed by Google.Must you do make use of a Google Lookup Console account, make use of the Fetch as Google source inside the Crawl component.
You'll be able to have Google index just the website page you submitted by inspecting the box for URL, or have it index your whole web net internet site (assuming your overall web net internet pages could be attained by subsequent your inside hyperlinks), commencing with each other utilizing the submitted URL, by inspecting “URL and all joined pages”.
It truly is achievable to post your URL to Bing, which requires you to undoubtedly, without a doubt, possess a very Bing Webmaster Sources account.
One more very best technique to get the website crawled by seeking out engines is normally to get inbound backlinks for the website in as numerous (reliable) places if you can. Established a URL for your site inside the About section of your  respective social web pages, notably your Twitter profile. Be certain you web page hyperlink your internet site furthermore to your Google+ profile and build a Google My Firm account to URL within your web page. Not just will this enhance your chance of acquiring your web net internet site crawled, it's going to aid your possibilities of exhibiting up within the Google Remedy Box and boost your knowing graph rich snippet. If you have obtained a YouTube account within your organization, insert a website link on the channel’s About website page as well as your motion picture descriptions.
The comprehensive, extensive vast majority of this sort of again hyperlinks will more than likely follow, in order they will never genuinely support your rating via increased hyperlink juice, but which might be not the purpose beneath. Crawlers nevertheless adhere to these URL and may well index the websites they land on.
Lastly, believe about introducing a site about the website. Gentlemen and ladies photo weblogs as items for articles or blog posts or weblog posts advertising and marketing and advertising and marketing and on web page Analysis motor optimization, however, they may also offer a mild stream of new articles or blog posts. Websites with weblogs have a median of 434% an excellent offer much more indexed the web pages than individuals with no.
Understand a far more complete just take a glance at receiving crawled and indexed by Google appropriate under.
In spite of rumors inside the path of the reverse, key phrases and phrases and phrases proceed to become greatly pertinent to SEO and choosing the right key phrases to enhance your site near to is a key part of the rewarding SEO approach. The treatment method by which you figure out folks search phrases and phrases and phrases to give attention to is termed crucial term analysis. Beneath will probably be the easy techniques to essential phrase study:
Very extremely 1st, uncover how people are in the intervening time discovering you via seeking out engines creating usage of Google Search for Console, and which look for phrases and phrases are driving your very best shifting to conclude end users using Google Analytics. When your web internet site is largely new, or will never get a superb offer all-natural internet site visitors, get principles beyond your products, programs or by answering the fret “What is my website about?” or “What does my enterprise do?” Uncover new important phrase prospective customers utilizing a valuable source as an example AdWord’s Important phrase Planner from Google or Bing’s key phrase examine technique, amongst many other accessible options.
If you have a pleasant, prolonged report of key phrases you want to objective, slender it every one of the way every one of the way all the way down to the these which have ample finds out the volume to create them definitely worth the exertions. Google now stops accounts that truly usually do not obtain a particular, unspecified dedicated threshold, from accessing approximated examination amount details, providing merely a variety of month-to-month queries. Nevertheless, you will be capable to nonetheless entry essential period volumes using WooRank’s SERP Checker.
Must you do not have a WooRank Professional or High-quality account, you'll be able to use Bing’s vital phrase overview valuable, useful resource to hunt out consider seeking out amount. Nonetheless, as Bing accounts for beneath ten p.c from the market share of lookup, this data will only unlock the recommendation from the iceberg. Bing & Google’s analysis expression gear use PPC details. It will not likely be 100% correct, but it is close too enough to draw correct conclusions.
When finalizing your essential phrase technique, make sure your portfolio has a pleasant mix of head and extended tail look for phrases and phrases. Normally tend not to go overboard with either type. Head search phrases and phrases will bring you plenty of qualified targeted traffic, but it won't ever convert exceptionally efficiently appropriate absent, and there’s a wonderful chance you will not likely rank successfully for them unless you might be a rather big and well-established website. Around the other hand, too several extended tail important phrases and phrases can convert like crazy, but won't bring in adequate buyers to obtain viably.
Recognize noticeably a great deal more about forming an essential phrase approach and endeavor investigation period investigation beneath.
Vital phrases genuinely really are a principal factor of Lookup engine promoting and advertising and marketing, but there’s way more to it than that. You also want to build your internet site with analysis engines in the brain. In-depth listed here will likely be the basic technical elements your website calls for to spice up its internet study engine optimization.
A robots.txt file might be an uncomplicated text file together with your website’s root directory. It tells seek out engine bots which web pages can and cannot be crawled. It is utilized largely to preserve study engines from indexing web pages you truly in no way ought to have to show up in try out to locate closing benefits like temporary folders or your legacy website adhering to a redesign or migration. You will be ready to block all user-agents, none or person bots.
It is possible to disallow distinct user-agents from accessing specified folders, subfolders or web pages by which incorporates them as disallow lines beneath the appropriate user-agent line. Some lookup engines will recognize the ‘allow’ parameter which indicates you can give entry to certain files in disallowed folders.
Sitemaps are XML files that include every single URL on an online website and give a couple of fundamental particulars about every web page. A standard sitemap for a website with just 1 web page could seem like this:
Here’s a rundown of what that all signifies:
Your website will purpose and could get indexed without having a sitemap, and they’re not a position signal. But possessing a sitemap makes the entire method easier and faster. Plus, the great deal more knowledge you give about your net web pages, the far more intelligently lookup engines can crawl your world wide web site, which means bots are substantially considerably less much likely to waste their crawl budget hunting at unimportant net web pages. Sitemaps are particularly essential when you are including new web pages or launching a new website that does not have a lot of backlinks, or any again back links at all. For an in-depth just get a look at XML sitemaps, check out this guide correct shown below.
