ok so it’s also like a fully fledged au but leaf me alone

Tw: Sleep paralysis, hauntings and haunted, sensitivities,, blood, scary stuff, demons

(Loosely based on the Haunting of Hill House with my own interpretation)

Ok ok so Remy and Emile are a married couple, and they work on renovating houses and selling them!

They have six kiddos! Damian is the oldest (15), then it’s Virgil (13), then Logan (9), then Patton (7), then twins Roman and Remus (5)

One day they move into this house, it’s a little out of the city, and more in the country.

It seems normal at first, the house, though old, doesn’t seem unusual. Remy and Emile set up the kids in the room. Patton and Logan room together, the twins together, Damian gets his own room and same with Virgil

The day starts okay. But slowly things become unusual. Remy and Emile find themselves having a normal night. And so do the children, for the first night, except Damian

Damian, after saying goodnight to his siblings and parents, settled into his temporary room. Snuggled up with some sewing devices as he creates some clothes. He gets a little exhausted and accidentally pricks his finger. So going to the bathroom to clean it off, he touches the light. A quick shock but nothing unusual, until he returns to his bed to find two hours have passed. Chalking it up to exhaustion Damian goes to bed.

Everythings fine until breakfast, when he reaches for a cup and the world falls away. The noise of the morning, his siblings, everything has gone. He feels the history of the cup, from when it was made from when it was placed into the house, to dust away on a shelf, to now as it clatters from Damian’s scared hands. He wears gloves now.

Virgil, though skeptical, feels the strange premonition just the same. Finding himself in Damian’s room scared most nights. However one night he tries his hardest to fall asleep in his own room, using his methods to calm himself. He wakes up at three am, on the dot. He watches as the room grows darker until he isn’t in bed. But sitting alone in the middle of the floor, red eyes flashing around him. He screams until his voice is hoarse, somehow ending up wrapped between his parent’s arms.

The next night, and the night after that, the same thing continues. The figures become more and more prominent, however, taking physical shape. On the seventh night, Virgil can see each distinct figure, too scared to scream he simply pushes away but this time, the darkness moves away with him. And through the next nights, he works quietly finding he can control… the dark..and the figures?

Though both his older siblings have expressed their concerns, Logan doesn’t believe in their myths. Only finding annoyance as Patton fears what his siblings have warned him about. So for the nights he works with Patton, calming down his brother, seeing as they share a room. Once Patton is calm, they fall asleep. However, Logan awakes easily as a gentle tapping takes place outside his door. He reads for awhile before the noise grows too much for his soft ears

He places his glasses on, tiptoeing with a shaky breath to the hall, creaking the old door open. His breath seizing as a hovering figure taps across the hall, facing away from the young boy. As it seems to turn towards him he rushes to his bed, shutting his eyes closed to put up a facade. He listens only as the door opens once more. He can feel the figure move around the room, tapping as it simply floats. Moving to Patton first then towards Logan. Holding his breath, the little one tries his best to appear asleep. Once the room grows quiet, and the taps fade, he exhales. A moment too soon, no face yet his screams are heard.

He tells not what occurred that night to anyone but Patton, his little brother trying his hardest to comfort him. Even with his own hands shaking. As he goes to hug Logan, the be-speckled boy finds himself whisked away, the dark space becoming a bright nebula. Logan floats through, his pajamas flowing with him. He scream in his loneliness until he returns to his bed, sobbing silently into his brother. Confused, and no longer intrigued but terrified.

After the many occurrences, and the restless nights he spend trying to comfort his siblings Patton collapses exhausted in his bed. Scared of what might come, loud winds outside awake him. The heavy shattering rain, and the cracks of thunder terrify the timid boy. Alas he cannot seek safety in the arms of his parents or brother, he cant move. He remains frozen in his cold bed. His blurred vision frets around the room, until a confusing image his blue eyes set upon. Something standing over his bed, nothing looking back. He whimpers, wanting more to escape. But nothing as he simply watches.

Finally after what seems like an eternity, he closes his fists tight screaming through the house. Rushed his parents come to home, an already alert Logan by his bed. Once the night calms once more, they assume the incident wont occur again. Yet for consecutive nights, Patton remains frozen with fear as something watches him. And he cant do anything. Though his nights are restless, his day seem normal. Seem being the unfortunate keyword, as things only grow louder and more present, an everlasting headache for the young one.

The twins find nothing wrong, playing delightfully through the giant house, clearly full of stories. They stay side by side, enjoying their nights (the non-screamed filled ones of course) and exciting days. Even through their small concern fro their siblings, and confusion to the worries of their parents. They seem to enjoy the house and their lives nonetheless. That is until…

The boys settle in for a late night after spending too much time creating a world through their house. The decide to rest after a final warning from their exhausted fathers. Everything appears fine, the house calm even with the storms outside. A sudden crash awaking everyone, including the young boys. They heave themselves out of bed, grabbing their stuffed animals and blankets, following the noise to the main foyer. There they meet their family, but the noise only grows louder. Quickly Remy rushes upstairs checking through the house, things continue crashing and blowing. Another loud crash and the twins and Logan scatter to Emile, finding safety in his hold. Patton offers to make some tea, his two older brothers advising they join him.

Another crash and the kids come back, scared to venture into the house any further. Remy returns and everyone is thrown in separate directions as a chandelier comes crashing down. The twins call out, tears in their eyes, for their parents. The others gather. But when Damian looks, he cant see his siblings anywhere. The family, in a panic, calls out for them. The twins grasp to each other, desperate confusion as their families walk past them. After hours, Emile spots them where he left them. Scooping them up, overwhelming relief as hes joined by the rest of the family. Once everything is settled, and the morning breaks. They set to work cleaning the remnants of the night. And soon everything returns to normal, well as normal as can be with so many deep secrets,

The twins continue their games however, finding their routines return easily. Hide and seek becomes harder, especially as Remus trips through the wall appearing on the other side. And Roman finds if he wills hard enough, no one can see him.

Nothing unusual about more fun, so the twins keep their secrets. One night, as they wander through, playing their sneaky games, they listen to soft struggles of fear. Creaking into their brother Virgils room, they find him stifling scared sobs. It appears he cant see them, even as they join him on either side. Hugging him sweetly. They shut their eyes, imaging the field outside, under the cherry blossom, where they imagine playing with Virgil, hosting tea parties. Soon enough it stops, and the room feels at ease. Virgil laughs, expressing his enjoyment for their idea, yet no words spoken?

Buggers, some creepy crawlies in video games!

Insects, love them or hate them, they are a part of live that almost everyone needs to deal with. Video games are no escape from this, as these critters have hooped, skittered and darted into many games. Also, even though they aren’t technically bugs, expect some eight-legged freaks to pop up as well. So grab your bug spray, grab your swatter, here are some insects in video games. Fair warning, if bugs really get to you, if seeing them can cause anxiety or panic, then skip this list. It’s ok I don’t blame you, bugs horrify me.

Bug type Pokemon (Pokemon) Bug type pokemon, there are too many to include just one. The bug type is realistically not that great of a type, it isn’t very strong and has many weaknesses. However, we have all had a bug type on our team before, they can be good early to mid-game, and even all the way to the champ if you know what your doing. They level up and evolve quickly and are some of the first pokemon you’ll encounter that can use status effect moves. Some bug types can actually be heavy hitters and worth the investment, and now there are even legendary bug types. So don’t put this typing down just cause it isn’t as strong as other types, bug types have a bit to offer! My personal favorite bug types by generation are… Beedrill, Scizor, Ninjask, Yanmega, Leaveany and good old Buzzwole.

The centipede (Centipede) One of the first bugs in video games, lets sing its praise. The centipede is simple, it crawls down the screen and the player have to shoot it into pieces before it reaches the bottom. The mushrooms will block your shot so you have to align them well to defeat the monster bug. Other than that it serves no lore or greater meaning behind its existence, its just a big centipede, simple as that.

Wigglers (Super Mario Bros) Wigglers are, more often than not, peaceful creatures that walk around in a state of ignorant bliss. They often wont react at all if jumped on and will continue on their merry way. Now if you jump on their head your in for a bad time, as they will fly into a rage and dash around in a crimson fury. It is often the best option to just avoid this creature if you don’t want to get hurt.

Caterkiller (Sonic Series) This is technically cheating since it’s a robot. The caterkiller takes on the form of a caterpillar and it just slowly moves along the ground. This creature is best to just avoid, since jumping on it often results in taking damage. The rule is to aim for the head and not any other part. In some games these things can be giant, reminiscent of a sandworm. Overall they are one of the most famous badniks in the Sonic series.

Flourescent Flower (Bloodborne) This beast is a horrifying eldritch abomination. It is a weird mixture of a plant, a centipede and a horrendous gaping maw. The creature has slow turning and is overall not to hard to defeat provided you are not standing in front of it. It attacks primarily with projectiles and can take quite a few hits to defeat. In the main game, they are rare enemies only appearing in one place that you will rarely revisit. They are more common however inside chalice dungeons.

Roolie (Bugdom) A nice little pill bug. This bug is the main character of the obscure yet cherished pc game Bugdom. Roolie must run, roll and kick his way through several levels in a quest to save his kingdom from an evil fire ant army. Roolie is a brave little bug who is up against tons of odd, including bruiser bees, horrifying spiders and even giant feet that want to crush him. However, he perseveres in his quest to save his kingdom and rescue the lady bug inhabitants.

Seltas Family (Monster Hunter) This monster family has two members, the standard Seltas and the queen. Lets cover the Seltas first. This relatively large monster is an airborne menace that likes to dart and fly out of range on the hunters weaponry. They have weak underbellies and are vulnerable to fire. The seltas will try to ram you with its horn, spit acid at you and swipe at you. If you managed to slay it, you can reap the rewards and make some armor. Now for the queen. The Seltas queen is always seen with a normal seltas, the queen is not airborne but can be carried by its underling. When alone she primarily fights with her tail and uses pheromones to call for help. These two make a deadly duo in combat.

Bugzzy (Kirby Series) A recurring mini boss in the Kirby Series. This martial artist beetle can grapple the pink puff ball with his massive pincers and slam him down or throw him. He can summon other bugs to help him if he cant grab Kirby himself. Inhaling him grants Kirby some new fighting moves, and in some games you can even convert him into an ally.

Zingers (Donkey Kong Country) One of the most common enemies in the Donkey Kong series. The Zingers are large wasp that are covered in spikes, due to these spikes they cannot be jumped on. The only way to defeat a Zinger is to throw something at it or have an animal friend dispatch it. They come in different colors, each one flies in a different pattern. They love to hover around barrels and can make barrel blast jumps tricky. What’s worse is that at one point you need to venture into one of their hives.

Giant Wasp (Earth Defense Force) These guys represent the horrors that is a wasp. Fast, aggressive and intimidatingly large. These wasp dart around at high speeds and shoot projectiles at you. Since they are airborne it can be a bit tricky to take them down, as they are quite mobile. They have a bit of health too and sometimes attack in swarms or in unison with other insects. Eventually you’ll come across giant metal versions that are even faster and more dangerous than before. These guys are among some of the most annoying enemies in insect Armageddon.

Queen Bee (Terraria) Deep in the underground jungle, you can find a beehive…Inside this beehive you can find an odd looking larvae, destroy it and prepare to meet the wrath of the queen bee. The queen bee is a very fast boss with a plethora of attacks. She has a good amount of health and the honey in the hive can hinder your movement. Do not try to fight this thing until your prepared and bring a ranged weapon! After you defeat her, you can revel in the spoils, as she drops some pretty good things. Also you get the witch doctor npc as a reward for slaying this giant bee.

Antlions (Half Life 2) Antlions are very aggressive creatures in the Half Life universe. They burrow under sandy areas and can react to surface tremors. Their nest are large and expansive. They come in five primary forms. The standard drone, which can attack in swarms, they have some flight capacity, so don’t think escaping will be easy. These drones are the most common. Next is the grey workers, they tend to not leave the nest and will spit acid at Gordan upon seeing him, they are physically weaker than the standard drone. The worm like grubs are defenseless and stick to the walls, ceiling and floors of the hive, waiting for the day they become a more capable threat. The red soldier is a ferocious large beast that is very aggressive and serves as a mini-boss of sorts, it can take a lot of punishment before going down. Finally the guardian is a soldier that guards the nest, it is very ferocious and very powerful and is best avoided.

Fire Ants (Fallout 3) The wasteland is full of nasties, these buggers are among some of the worst the waste has to offer. In Fallout three, they were born out of a twisted experiment that turned a colony of ants into giant fire breathing monsters. A nearby town was destroyed by this swarm of monsters and its up to the lone wanderer to clear the place out. These monsters are perceptive, fast and deadly. Since the quest that involves them appears early in the game they can be a brick wall that takes a while to overcome. So stay on your toes and keep your gun ready and steady. Beware, for this swarm has a queen…

Frostbite Spiders (Skyrim) Do you hate spiders? I hate spiders, they are freaky and just instantly cause panic in me. Video games know arachnophobia is a legit thing, and they cash in on this bad. Get ready for some spiders, starting with the frostbite spider. These spiders make their home in many caves and some outside areas in Skyrim. They can spit venom at their foes, and can ambush people from above if they dare venture into a spider infested area. These creatures can vary in size, with some being the size of a pig to others being the size of a small house! Fire spells dispatch them pretty quickly, they seem more resistant to cold, hence their name. Try to keep an eye out for these nasties when exploring the Rift, cause they tend to pop up there often.

Cave Spiders (Minecraft) Regular spiders are bad enough in Minecraft. Spiders can crawl up vertical walls, crawl under one block openings and have a dangerous jump attack. They don’t despawn during the day either, even though they cease being hostile in the daylight. The cave spider is everything that makes a spider bad and more. The cave spider is smaller and thus harder to hit, they can inflict deadly poison on you and they tend to come from spawners. They crawl towards you in narrow corridors filled with webs, now the webs only slow you down, not them. If you decide to go deep into a mine shaft in hopes of finding rare minerals or a fortress, be ready to fight these guys.

Black Tigers (Resident Evil) The Spencer Mansion and Raccoon city have a giant spider problem for sure, but one of the biggest of the bunch is the Black Tiger. This monster made its home underground and waits for unfortunate prey to stumble into its domain. It can spit acid and give a nasty bite… What’s worse is that it might have a buddy with it. After some shotgun blast to the face it will go belly up… And proceeds to spit out baby giant spiders, an arachnophobes nightmare.

Muffet (Undertale) Who said spiders couldn’t be cute? Or sell baked goods for that matter? Muffet is both of these. She initially appears at a bake sale, selling various pastries at extremely high prices. Normally a player will not buy these items. Later, the player is forced to battle her, as she was hired by Mettaton to take you out. During the battle she will trap you in her web and send her pets at you. Survive long enough and she will receive a telegram showcasing that you either supported the spider bake sale in the ruins, or you avoided stepping on any spiders. She will let you go after this ‘misunderstanding’ comes to a close. Alternatively, you can show her your love…but you wouldn’t do that, now would you?

Phantom (Devil May Cry) A big nasty from the Devil May Cry series. This demon takes on the form of a giant lava spider and attacks Dante numerous times. He serves as the first boss and is a challenging one at that. Later on, he will attack Dante and switch to a form similar to a scorpion. This spider is arrogant and boastful of its power but is squashed by Dante. In Devil May Cry 2, he comes back for a rematch. He presumably escaped the dark pit he was sent to, only to be sent falling back into it.

Skulltula (Zelda Series) The giant spiders of the Zelda series. These monsters have a skull like design on its back and are nasty creature to come face to face with. They vary in size, from the size of a turtle to the size of a human child. These baddies usually stay attached to walls or suspended on a vine. However they will craw around if need be and can entangle their foe. These guy’s shells are tough and most attacks to the front wont harm the bigger ones, their belly is their weak point, though arrows help too. There exist a rare golden variety capable of inflicting horrible curses upon the greedy.

The Stygian (Darksiders) Of course there was going to be a giant worm on the list. The Stygian is a colossal sand worm that can swallow War whole. Due to its tremendous speed and size, War must ride his horse to do combat with the creature. These monster serves as one of the bosses od the original Darksiders and would do battle with War in a massive arena. Initially its mouth is closed, but its mouth is its weak point so War will have to break it open, during the fight, smaller worms may come to assist it. Upon its defeat, War enters its body and rips out its oddly small heart.

Undeep (Lost Planet) From sand to Snow, the Undeep is a huge monster encountered in Lost Planet. It is fought relatively early in the game and serves as a warning to new players to choose their battles. This creature can be avoided, and it is recommended to do so. However, a skilled tactical player can take the beast down and revel in the victory. This worm is massive and can very easily crush the player under its mass. This worm would reappear in future installments as a boss as well, however in those games your more well suited to take it down.

Earthworm Jim (Earthworm Jim series) Not every worm is hungry for flesh and is the size of a football stadium! This groovy worm is simply put…just a normal cartoon earthworm. What makes him special is his state of the art space suit. Armed with a energy gun, Jim makes his way through many crazy levels, avoiding deadly traps and fighting colorful villains in order to rescue Princess what’s her name. Jim can use his body as a lasso and a helicopter to navigate levels. Jim was rather prolific in the 90s, starring in 3 games and having his own cartoon series. Sadly, his third game was a bad 3D game that doomed him to the back shelf.

The Knight (Hollow Knight) I figured I would end this list with something cute. The knight is a member of the void race. The knight is a gender-less hero that fights with a nail. Over the course of the game, the knight will learn many powers and spells to aid it in combat. The knight can heal itself with its soul. The knight will encounter many hardships over its journey through its world.

And I’m back! It was our second to last trip and to be completely honest, I had low expectations. What kind of fun would a country I’ve never even heard of be? Thank GOD Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina proved my incredibly ethnocentric self so so so wrong and blew me away.

Before I went, all I had heard about the entire region was:

“Oh my gosh, it’s so beautiful!”

To which I immediately thought:

“Oh my gosh, literally everywhere I’ve been is breathtaking- that’s nothing new.”

Furthermore, as if to add to my bad attitude in going to Croatia, Maddie and I got home from Greece on Thursday afternoon, and at 6:45am Friday morning we were in a death-defying taxi ride to the airport preparing for a FULL DAY of traveling. We didn’t finally touch down in Croatia until 4:30pm. It’s hard to be excited and positive at that point. The late emergence of my 12-year-molars and an overcast day took a bad mood to a downright nasty mood.

We stayed in Villa Antea, an apartment complex only a short bus ride away from the heart of Dubrovnik- not the capital of Croatia but a cultural hub. I did a bit of research on the country I was in: Croatia is a long skinny country bordering the Mediterranean sea. It was part of the former Republic of Yugoslavia and was occupied by the Axis powers in WWII. The people are known as “croats” and the entire region went through some very serious political and ethnic wars just a short while ago in the early 90′s (I’ll talk about that more later). Croatia has more than a thousand islands and a cliff-y coast line, which we were snuggled up against.

Dubrovnik is very close to the southern border of the country and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it has a long history as a maritime trading port. We focused our energy in the Old City portion of the city- constructed in the 13th century. The Old City had narrow brick-laid streets, surrounded by massive walls and sprinkled with clock towers and churches. Maddie and I ventured into the Old City with no particular plan and were engulfed by history.

(One of the shops we went into was an artist trying to sell these adorable minnow paintings. They reminded me so much of snorkeling and the little fish that live along every coastline I’ve been to. It was my *splurge* of the trip)

(most churches are open to the public so long as you remain respectful. We went inside two or three of the churches because Maddie loves looking at the European staples and found this adorable little grotto)

Before long, we had accidentally discovered the harbor and took a glass bottomed boat out for a cruise. It offered some really amazing views of the old city, as well as a really neat perspective of the seafloor and coral reefs. Considering I had just been snorkeling in crystal clear waters just a few days ago, I was underwhelmed by the glass-bottom part of the experience, but the Captain of our little boat let me sit up by him where I got to feel the wind in my face and get splashed by the cool waters.

So as if that wasn’t enough for the day, we still had two things we wanted to try: take a cable car to the top of the mountain over the city, and climb the city walls (certainly not experiences for those who are afraid of heights). The cable car was a pleasant experience that offered panoramic views of the entire city. Maddie and I enjoyed a pre-dinner snack of draft beer and ice cream at the edge of the mountain before heading down to climb fifteen million steps to summit the old city walls.

The next morning, Maddie and I got up early to venture to Cavtat, a small fishing village with crystal blue waters and a much smaller tourist presence before going back into the Old City with our pal Kalinda for drinks and some stray-cat snuggles. It was a shorter and more relaxed day than the first day because we were both worn out AND we were going to a new country the next day!

So for our final day of this particular trip, we got up and got in a van destined for Bosnia and Herzegovina. A small country, Bosnia and Herzegovina is usually just called Bosnia for ease, but Bosnia is the northern region whereas Herzegovina is the southern region. Bosnians and Herzegovinians are the same ethnic group, same language, and essentially the same people. To my understanding, it’s the same situation as Southerners and Northerners in the United States. Bosnia and Herzegovinian was recently tangled up in a civil war and experienced an intense genocide. I’ll be the first to admit that I do not know the motivations behind the war and genocide, nor do I really understand the conflict, but I was excited to go into the country. With a start, I realised that this was the closest I had ever been to a war zone, with the exception of the 9/11 memorial in New York City. Its a humbling experience to walk among buildings that were reconstructions of the originals- the original historical sites having been bombed. Even more humbling is seeing the old and young in their shops and restaurants and knowing that many of them have a working memory of the war and atrocities.

To my professor’s dismay, I slept almost the entire way to Mostar from Dubrovnik and missed out on a large portion of the tour guide’s spiel (sorry Kim!). However, I did learn that Mostar was established by the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century and has a strong liberal muslim culture to this day. To my delight, the Imam’s call to prayer welcomed me into the city- a sound I learned to love in Morocco. We were given the opportunity to explore an area of Mostar that had been completely destroyed in the recent war but has been reconstructed with historical accuracy in the following years.

The most famous sight in the city is the UNESCO certified bridge which young men and boys jump off of to prove their masculinity as a rite of passage. Up on the hill is a cross to represent the Catholics in the area, and to the right is a store selling copper plates. Then began the trek back home again, and once again I slept almost the entire ride. I did wake up when we pulled over to look at some waterfalls. Being from the midwest (aka the flattest place in the world), waterfalls to me have always been trickling streams and an overrated phenomenon to me. I still can’t believe what I saw that afternoon. Thousands of gallons of water cascaded over lush cliff walls. It seemed like a scene from the Amazon, not Europe. The water was cool and refreshing, and I’m pretty sure this view was in my top five for the entire semester.

So that was Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina! All I can really say about those countries is that they really are beautiful- a step above the rest! Now, as much as I would LOVE to continue writing about how amazing this last weekend was, I’m unfortunately using this blog post to procrastinate on a paper and I ought to get back to that (if anyone is super interested in Saint Paul’s Shipwreck and how it effected Christianity and Maltese Identity- I’m your girl). Send prayers as I move into my final two weeks here, take a weekend trip to Sicily (the same time Trump will be there- of freakin’ course), and prepare to go home.

Stop Building Garages: How Driverless Cars Will Affect Real Estate

Driver-less cars are going to change alot, and if you havent been actively reading about this, then its most likely going to happen much faster than youre expecting. At first glance, there may not seem to be much overlap between the auto industry and the real estate industry, but the impacts and infrastructure changes from this technology will be felt by everyone. As investors, its our responsibility to understand changes as far out in advance as possible so we can adapt to progress and mitigate new risks. Just about everything in this article takes place across the next 1530+ years, which may seem useless to some. However, if youre currently buying 30-year mortgages then youve got commitments that fall well within this transition period, and these changes will affect you. Having a better understanding of the future can be massive risk-mitigation tool against getting caught off guard when changes negatively affect you. Driving Will Change Where People Want to Live Because Cars Will Commute for Us Imagine you could wake up at 6 a.m. and crawl into your car and tell it to head to work while you got back to sleep. In two hours, youre there, youre safe, fully rested, and you arrive at work on time without having to deal with traffic or the monotonous task of driving. This is not science fiction. In fact, based on todays technology, this isnt even far fetched. This is science inevitability. So how does this affect real estate? Well, think of all the people who dont want to live in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, or New York City. What if they could live an hour or two outside the city and commute to work without losing any real time out of their day? How might this affect home values in a city when people can commute there easily without having to live there and without making any sacrifice to do so? It doesnt even have to be this extreme, either. Lots of people would be willing to commute for one hour each way if they didnt have to drive. This creates a lot of space between a city hub and the places people can live without taking on the financial burden of city costs. Might home values in a city go down when the necessity to live close by is reduced? Maybe cities will create an even larger price premium for those who can afford to live there while the masses are forced to commute an hour or two each day from poorer suburbs. Cars Will Be the Next Rental Real EstateOwning a Car Will Be a Luxury Car ownership is going to be a thing of the past before you know it. Sound crazy? Its not even a secret in the auto industry. Did you know that Ford, the oldest car company in America, has announced its going to stop selling cars and just sell trucks and SUVs? How can they do this? Thats a lot of cars to give up on selling unless they dont expect to lose that many sales. Companies who host ride sharing like Uber, Waymo, and Lyft are developing fully autonomous vehicles and are building fleets to replace personal car as we speak. General Motors is building a mass-market, fully autonomous car right now that will not be sold to the public. It will be only be used as part of a ride-sharing platform and available (supposedly) in 2019. That means two of the biggest auto manufacturers are starting to just flat-out not sell their products to the public. This is a signal of really big change. Owning a car isnt really that expensive, but there is zero return on investment. Its only an expense. However, once cars can finally drive themselves 24-hours a day, all while producing income, the value of ownership will go through the roof. The most likely scenario is that Uber will sell unlimited-use passes by the month, and we will all happily give up car ownership in trade. Itll be on-demand, easy, fast, and awesome. It may sound far fetched, but people will happily give up car ownership in the not-so-distant future when the cost savings become obvious. The value of any business is based on its income production. If you think cars are expensive now, imagine how much more they might cost when its a guaranteed profitable purchase. Related:Your Car is an Expensive, Health-Sucking, Time-Wasting Machine. So, Ditch It! Those with means to own their personal cars will create a moat between social classes. These days we might see a Ferrari and say, Oooooh, that person has money! Look at their fancy car! In the future, someone driving a Camry might get similar treatment: Ooooooh, that person has money, they can afford to have a personal car!!! Lots of people in America buy their own homes, and some own an extra house as a rental. The volume of landlords is relatively small because owning a house requires capital, resources, knowledge, risk mitigation, etc. In the future, cars will be the new rental real estate; people with means will still own their cars, and a few will own an extra car. The second car will drive itself around as part of a ride-sharing platform and produce income, just like a taxi, but passive.

Remember That Extra 900 Square Feet Everyone Had to Add to Our Houses to House a Car? What Were They Called? Oh Right, Garages! Why would you need a garage if you dont own a car? What value does a garage provide? Storage, for sure: We get to put our unsightly water heater there, the Christmas decorations, and the treadmill that my wife just had to own. Is that all worth the space and cost that a garage requires? Not likely. So will garages be a premium in the future, or a nuisance? More likely itll fade from importance in middle-to-low-end housing and continue in luxury homes. This problem is already being tackled with large parking garages. It might be a bold claim to say you wont need your garage in 20 years, but the world really wont need massive multi-level parking garages. Efforts are already being made to find out how to convert these spaces into light retail, office, storage and other amenities. Its not going to be feasible to tear down all that concrete, but it will be imperative to find something useful to do with all that space. Currently we pay a premium for garages because they are a highly sought after convenience. However, when the majority of people dont own cars, will that garage command a premium? Or will it be a detriment? Whats the Land Underneath a Gas Station Worth? Some of the most valuable land you can find is sitting underneath a gas station, and for good reason. Corner lots with good road access on busy cross streets serve a lot of cars and provide tons of ancillary needs. (Where else are we supposed to buy Slim Jims?). This infrastructure has been built up over decades and billions of drivers, but at its core it really relies on one thing: the internal combustion engine. Electric cars, however, dont need gasoline (surprise!). Youll charge at your home and probably at work. So how often are we going to need a gas station then? Hard to say, but the fact is, people will use a lot less gasoline, and my assumption is they will use gas stations much less. Now, obviously, some operators will find competitive advantages to survive, but many will not. And in rural areas, we should expect this problem to be much worse. A complete halt on gasoline sales is unlikely, because there are still uses for the product: small engines, generators, non-EV-conformers, etc. Thats a pretty weak position to hold onto though. Lots of industries are long gone, but still have niche support. Walmart will still sell you a CD Walkman (I saw one recently for $30!), but you wouldnt use that example to highlight the value of compact discs. I personally think most will go away, but not before suffering increasingly diminished profits as they experience the decline. Many will sell their businesses because of this, and what will their assets be worth? No one wants to look at a declining income statement trend and then pay top dollar. What about all the stores attached or adjacent to gas stations that capitalize on the heavy traffic? Ive heard of no great solutions to these questions, but that wont stop the impending takeover of autonomous and electric cars. How Long Will All My Daydreaming Take to Come to Fruition? If you dont read often about this topic, then its likely that this transition will happen much sooner than you would guess. People hear about autonomous cars and say, Itll never happen. Well, never will begin in 2020 when both General Motors, Ford, and others start to produce mass-market autonomous cars. What happens when every cab and Uber driver across the country goes jobless in a few short years? Ride sharing platforms will replace car ownership, as I mentioned earlier, and it will start next year. GM has publicly announced plans to build cars not sold to the public. They will only be part of their ride sharing platform.next year.How will home values be affected when waves of mass unemployment start? Take everything Ive mentioned so far and apply it to truck drivers as well. In fact, they will be unemployed first, as autonomous 18-wheelers are already being used in the UK. Unfortunately, I have no good advice for how to adapt to this, but anticipation and being proactive about change should help. For the Itll never happen camp, they will not take any measures to protect themselves and it will cost them dearly. What I dont want to convey here is not to buy a house with a garage because you might not need one in 30 years. Thats silly, but maybe get used to the idea of not needing one in the future. Sleeping in our cars is what poor college kids do when they are really stretching, but in 10 years it might be a feasible temporary option instead of stretching to rent an apartment. Twenty years ago smartphones didnt exist, now I cant go three minutes without touching mine. Its important not to get too confident of what is normal, as you may get caught stuck in the past. You dont need to have an MBA to know that businesses who refuse to participate in new technology go under. The board members at Blockbuster obviously had a strict head-in-the-sand policy. Dont be like Blockbuster. Embrace and adapt to changing technology.

Both Vehicles had to be towed away. I need some advice. I am an assistant manager at a small call center where I have worked for around 5 years (3 of them full-time). It was just announced to me and the manager (the only 2 full-time employees), that we have been bought by another call center that is not located in our town. Today has been a roller coaster of emotions. I am stoned out of my mind right now but I must write this down! So was I stoned the whole day? No. I woke up like a princess, had a lovely breakfast. Sat on my little table in front of the hotel, had some eggs with toast, vegetarian principles still strong, 3 weeks and counting. Read my book, had a pot of tea, watched the people passing by on the street. I booked a half day tour to the killing fields. I was told to brace myself for this one and I tried to but nothing prepared me for what I saw next. I knew nothing about the Kmer Rouge genocide. It broke my heart to see that, to be there, to walk down on the killing fields, between the skulls and bones and baby rags, to walk through those prisons, to read all those stories. It affected everyone, 1 out of 4 Cambodians died and the world barely even blinked. We all heard of Hitler but very few of us heard of Pol Pot. He was sent to good schools, spent some time in the royal palace, some time studying abroad in a nice Parisian university. Concluded that the source of all evil lies with the educated and powerful and the ideal society is the one from the villages, the way the regular folks live. In order to build his Utopian society, he decided that all the country s educated and powerful must be exterminated. So he evacuated everyone that lived in big cities, killed everyone with an education and sent the rest to the country side to work the field. He killed everyone that knew how to read, all the doctors and the lawyers and the artists, all the monks, everyone wearing glasses, all the people with soft hands. He killed all of them and all their families, cutting the grass from the roots. He destroyed 2 million lives, young and old, women and children, babies ripped from their mothers breast were held by their feet and got their skulls smashed on a tree and thrown in a ditch. He took young, uneducated kids from the country side, the ones that were easy to manipulate into doing the atrocious acts, gave them weapons and set them off against their own people. I walked on those fields and through those prison halls and my knees were shaking under the weight of my own mind trying to comprehend how something like this was possible. Whatever little sense I managed to make out of war after seeing Vietnam was falling apart. I concluded there that the reason was because they dehumanized the enemy to appear more as an animal but this could not work here. These were people from the same country, they looked alike, the grew up with the same culture, they spoke the same language. When you are holding that gun you are pointing it towards someone familiar, you understand what he is saying when he is begging for his life. They played the recording of a woman that was telling the story of how she tried to kill herself after 12 men took her to a field, raped her and left her there unconscious in a pool of her own blood. A crying mother that was remembering her 8 months old baby and how he was taken from her. A brother raging in vengeance, children that lost their parents. I am at a loss, I lost my hope in humanity, this makes me want to run as fast as my legs can run and live on top of a mountain by myself.

I dragged myself out of there crying and not knowing what to do with myself. And when I most needed hope, hope came and found me. I stopped at a pizza place after. A very famous Cambodian thing to do is to eat a Happy Pizza. Somehow, in spite of weed being very illegal in Cambodia as it is in most countries, it is alright for them to use weed on pizza. I cant explain it but there are hundreds of happy pizza places everywhere I go. So there I was, miserable, trying to eat some happiness. A little girl came trying to sell me bracelets and I invited her and her 3 brothers to sit down at my table and bought them some fried rice. The youngest one was 6 years old and the oldest one was 12 years old. Their English was really good for their age and they told me they learned it in school. They spend half the day in school and the other half on the streets trying to make money because their family is very poor. The oldest one was speaking to me as if he was in his early 20s even if he was just 12. He told me he doesn’t know what he wants to be yet but he knows he must stay in school because of what happened to his friend. His friend is older now and has a shop and is supporting his whole family because he stayed in school and he taught him that school is a way out of poverty. He used to be bullied a lot by the other kids because he was hungry and he got caught once eating things from the garbage but that did not make him drop out. I stayed there for 2 hours and listened to their stories and them rehearsing what they learned in school, singing songs and saying riddles. This country went through so much but all these struggles and all this poverty is raising a generation of fighters.

I left that place with a smile on my face and hope for the future. I was walking down the street towards my hotel, my earplugs in and my head in the ground thinking of everything that I saw that day. I saw with the corner of my eye a scooter heading towards with me with 2 men wearing checkered shirts and masks covering their faces. When they passed me, I saw the one in the back reaching his hand towards my front purse, where I was keeping my phone and my wallet. I saw him so clearly, as if he was moving in slow motion, I saw that dark hand with the fingers spread, ready to grab. And I hit that hand as hard as I could with the bottle of water I was holding. I did not stop, I did not run, I slowly turned my head as they passed and said MOTHERFUCKER through my teeth with all the hate boiling inside me. He turned his head too, he heard me and they kept driving away. I did not chase them, I was alone and running after 2 guys on a bike in a dark alley would have been a stupid move. My heart was beating so fast I could feel it in my throat. Another bike pulled right next to me with an old man trying to tell me something but I told him to leave me alone and I walked faster. I turned the corner and I could hear footsteps behind me so I walked inside a restaurant and stood there looking confused at the waitress. The steps behind me followed, it was another man that sat next to the table I picked, looked at me with flirty eyes and tried to ask me where I am from. I told him to go fuck himself and to stop following me and I ran out of that place straight to my hotel room, happy that no one followed me this time. I got inside, locked the door and put a chair against it. I threw myself on the bed and sat there holding my head, trying to understand what just happened. First thing I felt was relief because there were many occasions where this could’ve gone terribly wrong but it didn’t. This time I reacted, I did not just sit there frozen and paralyzed. I saw him and I reacted and that is already a sign of improvement, that I am becoming more aware of my surroundings and not just of victim of them. But then came anger. Why did I not react stronger?? Why did I not grab him back, why did I not throw my bottle or a rock or something at them? Why must I be made to feel so helpless?? I have so much anger and violence inside me, I wish I had a gun to shot them all in the head. This event woke up things I buried deep inside a long time ago, moments I also felt powerless and frozen, moments I never allowed to define my life. But it seems that I cannot bury it deep enough, the anger will find any reason to bubble up to the surface. This is not the first time where I venture out of my princess castle, growing up on the streets of Bucharest I had people sticking their hands inside my backpack since I was 8 and back then, all I had for them to steal were a bunch of colored crayons. It is not the first time men follow me on the street either, I have mastered the art of telling them to fuck off long before. But maybe it was the fact that they all happened in the span of 5 minutes, after having diner with the street kids, after spending my day on the killing fields walking through the graves, while high on pizza. It was something about the way that whole day happened that made me lock myself in the room for the next 2 days. I sat in bed and watched anime for 2 whole days straight, eating only take away happy pizza from across the street. I only got the courage to go outside the room after I bought myself a ticket out of Cambodia and straight to Laos. I came out of the room like a bat from inside a cave and realized how foolish I was to jump the gun like this. This is just a place like any other place, the capital of any country is going to be loud and dirty and overcrowded but it will also have a nice big variety of people and beautiful buildings and events to attend. Maybe Cambodia has a wilder element to it is but absolutely understandable considering they had to rebuild everything 30 years ago and again, it is not much better anywhere else. So it is not the place, it is never the place. But I cannot deny either the fact that for the first time, I felt unsafe, truly unsafe. But it is not the place. I wish it was the place, then the plane ticket will be the ultimate solution. The real reason is the event and not even the real event as what that tickled. There is a soft spot there and the unfortunate thing is that I carry the soft spot in me so no amount of running will make it go away. There is a soft spot with the feeling of safety and being unable to protect myself. The agonizing pain of feeling helpless is the root. Is this root tied to the fear of loneliness? Maybe, I am not sure yet. But I can sense a direction and I guess this is something that I will figure out at some point in Bali. For now, at least I found a question.

hi all i was hoping you could get some facts/and or legal advice. Ok so i have been renting this car for about 6 month now because i cant afford a down payment for my own. I had my own car insurance which covered the rental.
