For Daniel!
18. Do you prefer to see this character suffer or know peace? Angst or comfort? Both?
28. Do you get defensive about this character? If yes, then why?
18. Do you prefer to see this character suffer or know peace? Angst or comfort? Both?
Oof that's hard. Because in my heart, I prefer Daniel to be comfortable and comforted by those he loves. I want him to be happy. He's earned it. (They all have!)
And while I usually write fluffy or happy endings, I usually have to put him through the ringer a little bit first. (I love the hurt/comfort trope a lot.) Fluff and silly stuff is fun, but think it's really interesting what characters do in hard situations and how they manage to get out of them or what will make them open up and actually say the things they need to say to others, etc. So while I don't like seeing Daniel suffer, I do enjoy reading and writing fics where he's not having a good time and seeing how it plays out and what he does about it. Sometimes it doesn't end happily, and that's okay, too. Sometimes things don't.
But in my heart, he is often comfortable in bed with Armand or Marius (or both) and making the other person watch ridiculous YouTube videos about miniatures.
28. Do you get defensive about this character? If yes, then why?
No....? Maybe occasionally? I mean, I think in fandom one always sees takes or headcanons or ideas about characters that make you stop and go "Wait, what?" But I've really made an effort to train myself to go Huh, that's interesting take, I wonder why they think that? instead of knee-jerking to the "Wow, that's dumb" side of things. And I mean, let's be honest, sometimes you just Do Not See It and that's fine! We don't all have to have the same carbon-copy idea of these guys in our heads. (I'm sure plenty of people have the same reaction to many of my takes and headcanons, and that is also fine!)
With Daniel especially, we're not really given anything about his family life or backstory before the interview and even after he's a vampire, there are enough gaps in his story to fill a strip mall. So everyone is just extrapolating their ideas about him from what we're given based on their own ideas and experiences, and that's going to create a lot of variation. Which is fun!! We're not all gonna come to the same conclusions, and that makes things interesting.
I've been in this fandom for a long time and I've loved Daniel for a long time, so I have a lot of ideas about him built up in my head. I've had to reconcile new canon information with my mental image of him a few times over and that always caused some growing pains ('Oh he's mad now??? And building model trains? That's not mad!') And sometimes someone's take where at first I'm like "Huh, never thought about it that way" becomes my favorite new headcanon.
So in short, like... no? I certainly try not to be. And even if I don't jive with a take about Daniel, it doesn't hurt me for someone else to have it, you know?
Thank you so much for the ask!

Can I get a radium fact/favourite weird radium product?
HI THANK YOU FOR ASKING!! <3
One of my favorite facts about radium is that it’s in the same group on the periodic table as calcium and thus they share similar properties. Because of this radium can get deposited in the bones, preventing future absorption of calcium which causes brittle bones, as well as causing reduced production of red blood cells which causes anemia!
RADITHOR IS MY FAVORITE RADIUM PRODUCT!!! Which is literally just water containing radium LMAO but it was advertised as a miracle cure all medicine!! And then was taken off the market when everyone who used it started dying which is kind of a bummer answer hghg but yeah people really thought that Radium was super healthy

The second half of the 20th century was rife with sub-cultures and counter-culture movements. Are there any that particularly interested you (or Daniel)? That you enjoyed observing or participating in?
This question can be answered many ways.
First of all, the passage of time is very different for me (and those like me). Time speeds up until it becomes an ocean of rolling waves. It seemed so sudden that I would need a smart phone and dress in completely different patterns and textures than I did just a few decades ago. Sometimes I see humans living and dying in the same way. There are here, they are gone. So subcultures crop up and hold my interest for a bit if they’re colorful enough, otherwise I always expect the young people to stand for some cause.
I myself was part of a subculture, when I lived. Me and my brothers dressed in a very certain way that told the church they weren’t going to control us. But— we were also spoiled boys and I don’t really think the Master cared what we bought with his stipends.
I think I remember my time with Daniel the best because I was so enamored with him that entire decade. I remember the goths, skinheads, art students… Hip hop was invented in the 1980s and I really liked the young men and women who would dress like Boy George or Cindy Lauper. A few clubs we would frequent in Greenwich had a leather-dress requirement. But there were so many in the 80s! And there’s hundreds more now. I’m not sure the difference between “new wave” and “dark academia.” Though again— I expect to see drastic styles in the human youth I associate with.

Here's my best attempt at some vampire thoughts, specifically some thoughts about Louis and Daniel from when Daniel moves into Trinity Gate onwards
Louis gives Daniel a tour of all the best quiet hiding spots (bar maybe two or three he keeps for himself) for Daniel to use when TG is busy and overwhelming
They are binge-watch buddies, especially for incredibly niche documentary series, as well as any kind of mystery series where they like to compete to see who can figure it out first
Daniel builds Louis an incredibly detailed replica of the library at TG, that is built into the base of a lamp. The books even come out of the shelves and many of them are painted to resemble the covers of some of Louis favourite books (Armand helped with some of those). Louis has it next to one of his favourite reading spots in the library at court as a reminder of his other home
Modern day, they both still play wordle and refuse to let the other one live it down if they don't get a word and break their streak
I'm sorry your day hasn't been great, I hope it gets better, or at least that tomorrow is kinder to you
YEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!
Daniel and Louis are such an underrated pairing, their dynamic is so interesting and they have much more in common than I think any of them realize ugh I love them so dearly
That first one reminds me of a headcanon someone brought up...god, I can't remember who now...but someone write a headcanon about Armand setting up a sensory friendly room for Daniel and Louis to share because they can get overloaded pretty easily. I love the idea of one of Louis hiding away somewhere, and the whole damn house is trying to look for him but Daniel is the only one who knows where he is. Maybe it's one of the many spare bedrooms upstairs, maybe it's a random closet that Louis has furnished with a beanbag and some batter-operated tea candles, but I can just so clearly see Daniel slipping into Louis' hiding space and being like "Hey, y'know Benji and Armand were looking for you." And Louis shifts a bit in his seat, gets a little comfier, and replies "I know." And then Daniel just.....takes a seat and joins him in the glorious silence :)
Also oh my god you got me choking up at the miniature library model, that is so lovely i'm SOBBING. Daniel utilizing his hyperfixations as an expression of love is so dear to my heart like I think especially with the models, it's something so intricately detailed which means Daniel had to really take the time to study every facet before replicating it. Louis of all people especially appreciates the attention to detail— he can be VERY particular with how he curates his space, so I bet every inch of that library was thoughtfully and intentionally designed by him

4, 25 and 26 for the writers questions
4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?
Honestly I'm so basic that the old oh, ohhhh still gets to me every single time so probably oh.
25. What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story?
Oh, that's easy, I know Daniel's whole background. My version of him at least.
His middle name is Michael, he has an older sister called Caroline who currently has a granddaughter at NYC. He is the weird distant uncle who seems to have a ridiculous amount of money to pay for schooling or medical things but that no one has seen in years and that said grandchildren consider it to be like a scooby doo plot where he must live in a weird castle somewhere. For a while, it's even true!
I just think Daniel after he's in a better place mentally tries to reconnect with himself and that does mean not only the parts with the befanged beaus but also parts of his mortal life that could slip away if he doesn't make a conscious effort to keep them in that crystalised vampire memory thing. He's one of the few left with living mortal connections and that we don't see more of that is a travesty.
26. How do you get into your character’s head? How do you get out? Do you ever regret going in there in the first place?
Oh, this cuts to the core of me because I can't switch 'heads' easily. Usually, music and source material is how I get into the characters head but once I'm there, it's like I've selected my player for the day and I can't switch them out until my body's had a sleep reset. If I'm switching fandoms, make that 2-3 days of not doing anything at all so I can switch worlds in my head.
Sometimes I regret it because I get stuck. I was incredibly stupid earlier this week and wrote Nicki stuff and I've been stuck with him all week even though Armand's POV is what I need for what I'm working on next. I've palette cleansed with a trash fic, aka something not really good enough to see the light of day but I might hold onto it and make it better one day, so fingers crossed I can skip over now.

It's funny that you took an anthropology class in college, I have a probably time-period inaccurate headcanon that Daniel took some anthropology classes in college, if not had it as a joint part of his degree along with journalism. Idk I just always feel that he's as interested in collecting oral histories as he is in more journalistic type stuff, but you may disagree entirely based on what you've actually studied as I've never taken any anthropology classes myself 😅
I can totally see Daniel taking anthropology in college and being very into it! I mean, you need some credits science for undergrad, right? Why not Anthro 101? I always imagine him as being very curious about anatomy and life sciences and being super fascinated by how the body works beyond what you learn in Basic Biology. The way he talks to Armand about the processes of mortality and death makes it seem like has a pretty firm grasp on those things (as well as a slightly morbid view of them 😅). So I think he'd also be fascinated by bones and anthropology.
And I don't disagree at all, I think Daniel's love of journalism is more about listening to and telling the fascinating stories of the ordinary people around him and learning about the world that way than it is any desire to break a big case or find the Zodiac Killer or whatever. That's not to say I don't think he loves the pursuit of the truth or the solution to a good mystery, just that he enjoys collecting life stories because there's so much you gleam from individuals and their lives, and anthropology really fits into that. I think you're spot on!
I can also see Daniel and Armand taking an anthropology class together when they're in NYC taking random night classes, or at least hanging out in the back of the room for a few sessions of one. Armand would be so fascinated by the bones and what they can tell one about a person just from a skeleton.
(As for me, I basically spent a lot of years in college taking random classes and changing my major. I was a journalism major for a while there, too. The thing is, I really love science--especially anthropology and geology--but I am absolutely abysmal at math to the point where trying to pass the basic math requirements for any degree was a challenge, so there was no way I was going to pass enough math to do science as a major. Alas!)

TVC Fic Rec Friday ✨✨✨
Exposed by @hekateinhell Armand/Lestat de Lioncourt/Louis de Point du Lac ✦ Words: 5,066 ✦ Explicit
Listen, I know I'm over a year late to the game on this one but it's so good. I never knew how much I needed this poly in a high school AU. Horny teenagers just feels like the natural state of these guys (or at least Armand and Lestat — sorry Louis).
Kiss It Better by @uncivilcivilservice Armand/Daniel Molloy ✦ Words: 1,664 ✦ Mature
Weird boyfriend hijinks! For real, this feels like a scene that could've been in QotD. It's so very them — sweet and romantic, while still being characteristically bloody.
Air Catcher by @covenofthearticulate Lestat de Lioncourt/Louis de Point du Lac ✦ Words: 8,656 ✦ Explicit
This is another one that is long overdue but, oh my god, it's one of the best Louis/Lestat fics I've ever read... There is so much to unpack in their relationship and this is such a beautiful look into it.
Vision of the Damned by @mothmage Armand/Daniel Molloy ✦ Words: 6,904 ✦ Teen
This was a punch in the gut! An absolutely beautifully written look into that QotD scene. Just the tenderness with which Armand cleans Daniel before giving him the blood is so painful and so good!
Savage Fruit by murmurime Nicolas de Lenfent/Lestat de Lioncourt ✦ Words: 1,211 ✦ General
I'm already such a sucker for Nickistat but this fic just represents their tragic romance so well. It completely embodies the line "the little miracle of love turned into hate." Honestly feels so real to how they ended things in TVL.
If I failed to tag the author or if you don't want to be tagged, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll remove it/make myself a note for future recs!

5 and 11 for the writer ask thing 😊
What's something you've researched but haven't incorporated into your fic?
I do a lot of spicy research so I know what I think peoples kinks and fetishes are so I can use them as and when without needing to research it at the time. However, I usually end up using aspects of it so I'm not sure it counts. What would be new for Armand in the Devil's Minion era is probably the most recent one? Like finding out that he probably has no idea first hand how tomatoes taste was a wild ride.
For FF7, I did a ridiculous amount of research on bird wings (because for those unitiated, the chaotic redhead over there literally HAS a black wing rather than Marius being a dramatic lil shit about it) but I'm neurodivergent. The amount of times I have fallen down a rabbit-hole of research could result in a ridiculous amount of fic.
Is there anything important in your fic you think readers have missed/overlooked?
I know this is probably VC focussed but man there is one thing in JBSWM that no one has ever noticed and that is that my mega chapter for Halloween has a countdown to meeting Jenova. It counts from ten down to one across the 25k or so words of it and it's subtle, but I thought it would be a fun thing to put in there.
In VC, I think it's that Daniel only ever mentions one social media (instagram) and there is a reason for this. This is because I knew I wanted Louis at some point to introduce him to facebook and have them both find it really funny that Louis knows more than he does about something modern, though how modern FB is, that's debatable. I just think Louis probably posts like a plant mum and joins goodreads groups, so it's his social media of choice. Another part of it is that the books exist in universe and I don't know what Daniel would make of twitter opinions or tiktoks about the important people in his life, though I do feel like since Tumblr is so down with monster fuckers, he would be right at home here. The important part being that in the stars verse, at least where we are, he hasn't read Blood & Gold yet and in the words of River Song, spoilers!

For every  “ 😥 “  I receive, my muse will have to admit one (1) embarrassing memory from their past!
There were so many I could choose from my mortal years as a hedonistic prince. Nothing could touch me seemingly except perhaps a dash of brief ruddy cheeked embarrassment. The sheltered youth, peeking out despite it all. One such occasion the master was away, I had no idea when he'd return. As was my custom I often slept in his bed, it brought me comfort when he wasn't home. I even wore his rich red robe, it dwarfed me to walk around in but reclined on the curtained four poster bed it enveloped me snuggly. So familiar almost as if he was there with me. Like my hand was his own reaching down to touch myself. Needless to say my blood pressure spiked twice when I was finished and realised he was studying me through the drapes at the side of the bed.

Fandom Ask Meme!
17. What's a book, movie, or show you think Daniel would like?
Oh my, I have whole lists!
Books: I think On the Road by Jack Keraouc was hugely influential to Daniel as a young man. Maybe he read it his first year of college or in high school, but I think it spoke to him in a lot of ways and is one of those books that helped shape him as a person. And he definitely read and liked The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe, which was part of why he decided to become a journalist (a small part, maybe, but it's in there). I also see him being very into Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Just feels like he would appreciate the humor of it a lot.
Movies: I see him as liking the original Star Wars a lot and I think he and Armand saw it in the theater. Here's a deep cut but I think one of his favorite movies is Network although the first time he and Armand watched it, Armand kept saying "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!" every time Daniel didn't want to do something.
TV Shows: He and Armand definitely love Taskmaster, Armand especially, but I think Daniel also enjoys trying to figure out how he would do the tasks and they like to argue about whose approach was best. Miami Vice makes him feel nostalgic for Night Island. He definitely like the original Charlie's Angels and MASH, and he probably appreciated Breaking Bad.
18. Type Daniel's name and tell us what the autocomplete suggests as the next word
I got "Daniel is a good guy." LMAO. I mean... morally not so much but he's a good guy!! Sure! Thanks phone!
And thank you so much for the ask!

It’s #wipwednesday! And in an effort to practice some positive self-talk about creative projects, I’m going to share something I like about my excerpt. And if you participate I hope you say something positive about your own work too ♥
This whole fic has to do with pleasure, memory, and repression. It’s a follow up to Turn Away No More (yeah, the pit fic haha) exploring Armand’s new found body image while Daniel asks to do some of the things they tried in that fic again.
I like this bit because it plays with the idea of Armand recovering memories and being uncertain about what his body does and doesn’t know how to do (and whether what he ‘knows’ has been colored by what others have told him, like Marius). And really, I like that I put them in a new location. It’s so easy to stick to having them at home but they went out! They did stuff! And so putting them in a swimming pool felt like trying something new for me, and opened up an exciting door to being able to reflect an important moment from Armand’s youth.
Tagging (but no pressure!): @birdblacksocialclub, @uncivilcivilservice, @this-writer-needs-coffee
***
“Come on, aren’t you getting in?” Daniel asked, grinning. “Or are you chicken?”
Breaking into the rooftop swimming pool had been his idea. Overnight the city had gone from fall right back to summer, temperatures jumping back up high enough for Daniel to demand they leave the apartment and get one good swim in before the heat and humidity were gone for good.
Beyond the railing the city lights glowed, the Empire State Building unmistakable against the sky line, but all Armand had eyes for was the young man bobbing in the water. Daniel seemed to glow in the underwater lights. He looked so very mortal and alive, resting his forearms on the edge of the pool and floating there, wet hair pushed back from his eyes. Armand eyed him from his lounge chair.
“Chicken? Do I look like a bird, Daniel?” he asked, head cocked.
Daniel laughed. “No, I mean like- are you scared? It’s just a teasing thing, don’t worry about it,” he said, before Armand could ask what chickens have to do with fear. “You’ve been swimming before, right?”
Armand frowned even as he pulled his shirt over his head. He’d been in the sea once, drunk and entirely on accident. And then in his master’s bath. But beyond that- He stepped out of his trousers and draped them across the chair, and tried to pull up a memory, any old and muddled thing that would point to him having learned to swim in his youth. As he removed his rings one by one and left them in a pile he found that anything he came up with was so distant as to seem unreal.
As bare as Daniel was, he wandered over to the steps. Armand kept a hand on the metal rail and waded into the water. It was as warm as a bath, like the waters of his master’s great marble tub. Safe in the shallow end Armand ducked beneath the water and then quickly rose back out, tossing his wet hair back from his face.
“I don’t recall ever having been before. I don’t know that I know how to,” Armand said.
Daniel held out his hands. “Then come here. I won’t let you go.”
Armand stepped forward, feeling his way across the sloping bottom of the pool. When it dropped out from beneath his feet entirely, too deep to keep his face above the water, he kicked off. Extended his hands and, just before he felt uncertainty creep up into his chest, caught Daniel’s fingers in his own.
He’d been in the water alone long enough that his fingertips had begun to wrinkle, shriveled as the raisins Armand had eaten as a youth in Venice. Armand shivered at the sensation of Daniel’s hands running up his arms, reaching around to his back. In the water even an immortal like him was weightless. It was nothing for Daniel to guide him to tip onto his back so that he could hold him with one arm beneath his neck, the other hooked beneath his knees.
Armand released the breath he’d been holding. He looked up at the sky and let himself float.
There was a memory, something old and faded from his last moments as a mortal. Armand had been held like this in his master’s bath and told that now he must rise about the pleasures he’d so loved. As a youth he’d idolized his master. He’d believed every word he’d said, taken them as gospel truth.
And what for? To start himself back on the path of self denial? What had he learned as a newly turned immortal except not to cry, not to confide in anyone, not to take any pleasure of his own but to give and give and give until he had nothing left-
Well. No more of that.
