This Was Not A Dare, Reigen

Jon glares at each of the— the suspects traitors in front of him, tape recorder clutched tight in one hand.

Martin, wringing his hands uselessly, eyes wide and beseeching. Tim, fists clenched hard enough for his knuckles to go white and returning his gaze with a death stare of his own. Sasha, arms folded to form a barrier between Jon and herself, expression a perfect mask of concern. Reigen, radiating disappointment in every one of his gestures and quips. Elias, eyes weary, fingers rubbing the bridge of his nose.

Some intervention this is turning out to be.

Jon wants to scream. Wants to reach out and shake someone, anyone, until they admit he’s making sense and it’s the rest of the world that’s gone mad.

Every single one of them (except Martin) could’ve killed Gertrude. He knows he has no proof that they did, but he has no proof that they didn’t either, can’t they see that? If they don’t want him to suspect them, it should be easy for them to actually give him proof of their innocence (like Martin did), instead of just repeating platitudes of “you know this isn’t acceptable adult behavior, Jon” and “you’re better than this, Jon”.

Who cares about knowing better or acceptable behavior when it’s your very life on the line? He’s half tempted to throttle the con artist, see how dignified or adult he is when he’s the one with a murderer on his tail!

…Not that Jon is a murderer. It’s just the principle of the thing, is all.

“Jon,” Elias says, tone soothing in all the ways he doesn’t want it to be. “This is absurd. This goes far beyond an unhealthy work environment. I’ll admit it’s partly my fault for letting it get this bad, I should have intervened earlier.”

Reigen cuts in with a hand gesture that is as effusive as it is dismissive. “That doesn’t make his behavior okay, Bouchard-san. It may be bad here, but Jon chose to follow me, Tim and Sasha, and yell at Martin, rather than going to the police or paying a detective, like Herlock Sholmes or something.”

Jon sputters. “Wh- It’s Sherlock Holmes, not—and he’s fictional!”

Reigen blinks sleepily, one eyebrow raised. “Oh? That doesn’t sound right. Are you sure?”

“Yes!” Jon all but shouts, rapidly reconsidering his stance on braining the sardonic little git with his tape recorder. “Don’t you even—an-and you’re deflecting again! Just like with your ridiculous ‘haunted gun’ nonsense!”

“I’m not!” Reigen says, clearly deflecting. “I’ve seen this kind of thing loads of times as the number one psychic. When a weapon kills lots of people over 100 years, the bad energy gets bigger and bigger until the gun grows an evil spirit and is hungry—”

“I refuse to believe Gertrude Robinson was murdered by a sentient blunderbuss!!”

“Be that as it may,” Elias interrupts, shooting them both a stern frown. “This is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about, Jon. Given how badly it’s affected your work ethic, I will be taking direct action to ensure it does not continue.”

Jon can feel his shoulders hunch almost against his will, dread pooling in his stomach at the thought of whatever punishment is about to be unjustly inflicted on him.

Only Martin looks half as worried as he feels, glancing between him and Elias nervously. By contrast, Tim looks downright triumphant, smirk nasty and vindictive. Sasha’s somewhere between those two, not openly celebrating his soon-to-be-downfall, but not acting like she’d lift a finger on his behalf either, though he’s unsure why that feels like it should surprise him. She’s always been as neutral as Switzerland.

Reigen, oddly enough, has more in common with Martin than with Tim. He’s staring at Elias like he’s waiting for a bit of news he knows he won’t like.

Jon thinks he’d appreciate that more if he wasn’t about to be unfairly lambasted simply for trying to stop a murderer and bring justice for an old woman who probably died frightened and alone. Much like Jon probably will once he’s been hobbled by whatever Elias is about to say next.

“Such as by restricting access to the archives from members of the public who are ultimately doing you more harm than good.”

…Wait.

What?

“What?!” Tim, Martin, and Sasha echo.

Reigen glances between them all, blinking in confusion.

Jon shares the sentiment entirely. His punishment is…for someone else to be removed from the archives? Someone he doesn’t employ or even like that much, no less?

He must have misheard, surely.

Though maybe not, given how Tim looks aghast, glancing between Elias and Reigen. “Okay, no, Reigen’s clearly not the problem here—”

“I’m very sorry, Tim, but Jon has made several remarks about the disruptive nature of Mr. Arataka’s presence in the archives.” Elias sighs. “From the arguments like the one we just witnessed to the nonsensical purchases of oddities inspired by his presence, such as Duolingo subscriptions,” Meaningful glare at Jon who resists the urge to clutch his phone guiltily, “That are now billed on the Archives’ expenses, it unfortunately seems as though he is dragging down productivity for all of you as an active stressor.”

“But we’re much better equipped to take statements from people who don’t speak English because of that!” Martin protests, stepping forward. “Isn’t it an advantage to have a more, more international perspective for our work?”

“One positive in a sea of negatives does not an advantage make.” Elias says, sounding infuriatingly like he’s misquoting something. “And really Martin, how realistic is it that this would help in more than a few isolated cases? I expected better from you.”

Martin’s face crumples, and his shoulders hunch, making himself smaller.

Jon finds his own mouth opening to—what? Say something? What would he even say?

Luckily, Sasha intervenes before he can dig his own grave further. “That’s as may be, but he’s a wonder for morale. He and Jon are funny, not anything serious, and I don’t think we’d have come to you about Jon‘s behavior unless he encouraged us to—”

“Which only fits into the delusion where Jon feels an outsider is rallying his subordinates against him, which is not good for his paranoid outlook.” Elias replies calmly. “And it’s never a healthy work environment when one employee feels the others are making them the butt of a joke.”

“I’d say that’s not as bad as when the boss feels he has the right to violate everyone’s privacy whenever he wants to just ’cause he’s feeling sad!” Tim growls.

Elias begins to answer, before Reigen finally speaks up.

“Sorry,” The con artist says carefully. “But you are…«I know this one…» banning me from the Archives? Yes?”

“That is the long and short of it, yes.” Elias says, grudgingly

“Why?” Reigen challenges, eyes hard and searching. “What have I, personally, done that’s wrong here? What behavior do I need to correct?”

There’s a moment of silence. The whirring of the tape recorder sounds uncomfortably loud.

“Mr. Arataka, are you currently under the employ of the Magnus Institute?” Elias asks, brow furrowed.

“Ah, no, no, but—”

“Are you looking to become employed by the Institute at this point in time, as a prospective member of the Archival Staff?” He fires off rapidly.

“Su-Sorry, but if you could just go a little slower—”

“Then I am afraid that unless you’re looking to fill out an employment contract or a Statement form, we cannot help you, Mr. Arataka.” Elias spreads his hands wide. “We are an academic institution, a place of research and learning. The Institute cannot allow for social dalliances on company time, especially not when those visits are negatively contributing to the work environment and the wellbeing of our staff.”

Tim throws up his hands, “I-I cannot believe this!”

Reigen’s mouth works soundlessly for a moment.

“Arataka is my…what do you call it? First name?” He says, at last. “Using it in this context is…inappropriate. Please call me Reigen, if you would, Bouchard-san.”

“Of course. My mistake, Mr. Reigen.” Elias does have the decency to look somewhat abashed. “Though, regrettably, I am going to have to ask you to leave the premises within the next twenty minutes, or I will be forced to call security.”

Reigen nods, jerkily, hands stuffed in his pockets.

Jon almost wants to call out to the fraud as he turns to go, grab him by the shoulder, pick another argument, something. He knows he should be happy, be glad that this thorn in his side will finally stop bothering him, but instead he just feels—befuddled. Off-kilter.

What happened to the man who once spent three hours arguing for the “spiritual effectiveness” of entirely performative and useless rituals, saying that ensuring his clients left his office fooled and contented was better than actually uncovering genuine supernatural forces and learning all there was to know about them? Why is he going so-so easily now, when he’s made Jon fight tooth and nail in every debate he’s had with the so-called psychic?

At the door, the con man pauses.

“Bouchard-san. You said I could come back if I had a statement to give?”

Elias shifts in his seat, looking bemused. “W-well, yes. That is a service we do provide. Of course, the statement would have to be genuine, and verifiable as such before we let you back into the Archives.”

“We don’t even do that for most of the rubbish we do take,” Tim mutters under his breath, and though Jon is glad he’s not the one being shot a quelling look, he does have to agree.

The con man turns back.

He’s got that smirk on his face that immediately puts Jon’s hackles up on instinct, prepared to argue against whatever inane point he’s come up with now to defend his phony psychic title.

“Gotcha.” Reigen says, far too cheerfully. «Ja ne.»

Then he strolls out of the office, as cool as a cucumber.

Jon could even swear he hears him whistling as he makes his way down the stairs.

There’s a moment of stunned silence.

“I’d do him.” Sasha pipes up, unhelpfully.

“Sasha!” Martin hisses, scandalized. “D-don’t you have a, a—”

“Oh, I don’t have to worry about that.” She remarks, far too blasé for someone in a newly committed relationship. “Tom’s heard about him too, and he agreed he’s just our type.”

“And I’m not?” Tim jokes, but there’s a hard edge to it that Jon’s found himself increasingly familiar with in the past few weeks.

Sasha shrugs with a mischievous little smile, as if that mattered very little to her.

Elias coughs. “Right. Well. Whatever your relations to Mr. Reigen are, please try to limit them to outside the workplace in future.”

The rest of the intervention is surprisingly subdued. Elias gives Jon access to the footage from the cameras in the rest of the Institute, and Tim bodychecks him on the way out of the office, muttering about how nice it must be to never face any consequences for his actions. Sasha follows, the way she won’t meet his eyes a condemnation in its own right.

Even Martin doesn’t say anything to him, just bites his lip and hurries past back down to the Archives. It doesn’t sting. It doesn’t.

Even as he settles in to watch and rewatch the CCTV records of Gertrude’s last week alive, Jon can’t shake the ridiculous feeling of foreboding that’s dogged him since Reigen left.

Most of him wants to say it comes from the fact that despite the fact that Reigen has not appeared in any of the camera records for the Magnus Institute before he started his term as Head Archivist in 2016, isn’t banning him from the Archives just letting the con man run around London with impunity, with no way for Jon to ascertain his movements or motives? That instead of solving a problem, Elias has just given a potential murderer free reign to escape?

But a small part of Jon, one that never could deny the sensation of being watched, that is frozen in second-hand terror whenever he reads a Statement, knows, Knows that it this stems more from the idea that the fraud will actually accomplish what Elias has unwittingly challenged him to do.

The illogical but pervasive surety that he will do so.

Jon’s not sure if he’s more afraid that Reigen Arataka will vanish entirely, another unfortunate victim become an unsolved mystery.

Or that he’ll come back, and bring whatever he’s managed to unearth on his insane quest with him.

Gaps in His Files (Part 8) [Relabeled; Refiled Series]

Summary:

Logan Berry has learned many things the last 10 years: a lot of math and physics, a bit of humility, and how to be a hero being just a few. Through his education, his experience teaching, and his exploits as the superhero Bluebird, he’s changed in a lot of small and large ways. He has recorded these changes in well-organized documents and files. He’s even had to create two new file designations: a red one for files about his moonlighting at Bluebird, and a light blue one dedicated to his boyfriend, Patton.

When Bluebird is targeted by a memory device and all of those 10 years of progress suddenly disappear, Patton Sanders and Logan’s extensive files are left as his only resource to get those memories back. But what is Patton supposed to do when there are clear gaps in his files? And what does he do when he is one of them?

This is set 25 years before Sometimes Labels Fail though it’s story is completely independent of it and it is not necessary to read that one first.

Erm. Logan says a few not so nice things about people who struggle academically which are very wrong. I think from context it is clear that the author doesn’t agree with it. As a teacher I do not endorse his statement and in the missing 10 years he’s learned the lesson for himself... he’s just a very dumb smart high school kid. That being said, I thought I might warn you all especially with the fact that people might be in the middle of finals and a little emotionally vulnerable to that one.

Patton spent most of the morning getting Logan familiar with his red files while also asking him subtle questions about his real opinions on things. The mention of the crying thing did sting a bit even though Patton already knew it made Logan uncomfortable. Patton knew that from the beginning, but he’d still let Logan force himself to try to help when Patton was upset.

God, Patton was a bad person.

After he’d helped Logan get a good feel of the newer files, they started brainstorming about how best to work on recovering his memories over lunch.

Patton had thought they were on the same page, that being they were going to read through the pages in his files hoping he’d remember something in them. However, now he was doing that finger tapping thing on the table while he chewed slowly on his sandwich.

“What?” Patton finally asked.

Logan had clearly been waiting to share because there was no pause before his response. “Have you heard of Blight?” Logan asked, casually, as though that were not a name that made most of the population shudder when they heard it.

“This is nothing like that,” Patton said firmly before he continued with that line of thought.

“Why couldn’t it be?” he asked with a curious head tilt.

“Because… because it’s not,” Patton said.

“Do you have any evidence that it isn’t? Just because it was a device instead of a superpower does not mean it is not the same methodology.”

“It’s just not,” Patton said, “It can’t be.”

“Why?” Logan asked again.

“Because none of them recovered,” Patton tried not to snap.

Logan hummed. “Ah. That seems like an emotionally charged conclusion.”

“Can we please just not talk about it?” Patton implored, turning back to his lunch even though he wasn’t hungry anymore. There were a few moments of silence.

“Did you know,” Logan started, and Patton sighed, “that Blight was on record as having telekinesis before she revealed herself as a Mind Warper? People say she must have implanted false memories in her victims, but if she really was then it would be evidence of-”

“The Monofacultas Theory,” Patton finished for him.

Logan gave him a startled look. “You know it?”

“I’ve known you for over three years Logan and while I agree that the theory is interesting and feasible, there are no known cases of someone having a set of powers that span more than one of the Tri-divisions.”

“If Blight had telekinesis there is. She would have had a physical power as well as a mental one. Witnesses said…”

“She tore the minds of an entire city apart at the seams and restructured them to her desire. Excuse me if I don’t trust the validity of those mind’s statements especially when they have been disproved by video evidence.”

“Just because she didn’t use telekinesis for that one situation caught on video doesn’t mean she couldn’t.”

“Fine,” Patton said. “Say you’re right. Why does it matter?”

“Well I have telekinesis.”

“So, you want to… move your memories back into place?”

“Basically, yes.”

“With your telekinesis?”

“Well, brains are ultimately physical objects.”

“And you are going to not simply give yourself a stroke because…?” Logan shrugged. “Absolutely not Logan.”

“It would be interesting,” Logan said, eyes alight. “I could prove that powers are not truly divided into physical, metal, or energy powers but are originally one singular power that develops due to circumstance during early childhood.”

“If your brain doesn’t literally explode because you don’t know what you’re doing.”

“All science has risk.”

“No, Logan.”

He gave him the look that Patton was not allowed to call a pout.

“Can we at least try some less extreme methods of memory recovery before the theoretical methods with no hard evidence? Like continuing to read your files to try to jog your memory naturally as we had discussed.”

“Fine,” he agreed, looking downtrodden. Patton really hoped he got his memory back before he got too restless and tried something like that.

“If you’re finished eating, we should get back to reading,” Patton said. Patton was certainly finished with his lunch.

The afternoon went well without any major disasters or talk about dangerous methods to get memories back. Logan had not remembered anything, but he’d been calm and patiently started sorting through his files in chronological order. Then, when Patton left him alone for a moment to go to the bathroom, he somehow managed to find his daily planner from where Patton had hidden under a blanket in the front hall closet.

“It’s fine,” Patton insisted from the couch, watching him pace back and forth and wringing his hands. “I called your advisor and told him you wouldn’t be able to meet with him because you were sick.”

Logan frowned at him. “You shouldn’t’ have done that. I could have gone. I don’t want to appear irresponsible by skipping meetings.”

“He wanted to talk about your research. You would have had no idea what he was talking about,” Patton reasoned.

“I would have managed.”

“Logan,” Patton said patiently. “Your research area is partial differential equations. Do you even know what those are?”

Patton could tell by the look on his face that he had no idea. Yet he still stuck his nose up in the air. “I know what a differential is, and I know what an equation is. I am sure I can figure out how to do parts of them.”

“You haven’t even taken multivariate calculus.”

“It can’t be that hard.”

“It is,” Patton groaned, “It is hard.”

“Perhaps for you,” he said hotly.

“No,” Patton ground out. “For you. The 28-year-old you spends hours a week trying to understand these things and he has a bachelor’s degree and almost 6 years of graduate education under his belt. You are in high school.” Logan just gave him a withering glare and turned his attention back to the planner.

“I’m supposed to teach two courses tomorrow,” he said.

“Oh, absolutely not,” Patton said.

“I have a responsibility rather or not I have my memories.”

“Logan, listen to me. You have not graduated high school. You cannot teach a calculus class.”

Logan bristled. “I took calculus last year and got an A.”

Patton had to take a steadying breath. “That is not the same as teaching it.”

“It can’t be that hard. I will simply explain the information to them.”

“And when one of them asks you how to add two fractions?”

Logan’s eyebrows crinkled. “That is a basic skill. I am sure anyone in a college calculus course can do that easily.”

“You have clearly never taught a day in your life.”

Logan bristled. “Any adult who cannot add fractions should immediately be kicked out of university and returned to kindergarten where they belong.”

Patton looked at him for a moment hoping perhaps he would figure out on his own why what he just said was completely out of line. He just kept his jaw stubbornly firm. Patton took a breath. “And that is why you cannot go and teach these students.”

Logan scoffed. “I am not sure why my future self would put up with such things.”

“Because you almost failed your real analysis course,” Patton answered in a heartbeat. “Your first semester of teaching, you were also taking a first-year graduate real analysis course and you couldn’t understand a word of measure theory. It was the first time in your life that you had to work for a C. One day you looked at your students and came to the realization that the look on their faces when you tried to explain the product rule to them was likely the same expression your professor saw on yours when he tried to explain the existence of non-measurable sets. We all have our strengths and weaknesses and if we let someone else draw the line for stupid, there is every chance we’d end up on the wrong side of it. So,” Patton said crossing his arms, “I am not going to let you go ruin your own reputation with your students as a teacher who is not an asshole because you’ve not had to toe your own line yet.”

Logan met his eyes, clearly wanting to argue, but Patton just kept his face strict and his arms crossed. Logan’s face cleared suspiciously quickly, and he backed down. “Fine,” he agreed. “I will stay here.”

“Good,” Patton replied eyeing him. “Now put down the planner and let’s go back to work.”

i find your writings on abuse, trauma, etc to be really insightful and eye opening, and i have repeatedly found myself a little shocked that you're not a psych academic because i *genuinely* find your perspective that, like...Important and Good? thanks for taking the time to write about it. i know it is hard to write about, but just so you know, i am reading it, and i am identifying with it and actively utilizing your perspective and voice to make myself more aware of my own and others reactions

Idk what a psych academic like... does... so I'm not totally sure how to interpret this but I'm really glad that some of my writing about trauma is helpful for you. To be honest I'm always genuinely really surprised when people tell me that they have gotten some utility out of my writing on this stuff because I did not start writing about it for any other reason than like, it felt like maybe a less destructive alternative to self-harming. (I don't think this is totally the case anymore but for a long time my self-harm shit was primarily about, I guess, manifesting the impact of my abuse in a physical way, so I could look at my body and understand that something had been done to it - which like, obviously is really unhealthy and I don't encourage! Writing out shit is much more positive and productive!! But writing about stuff allowed me to create a record of this sort of thing, without that record coming with the risk of hitting a vein. So ultimately it was a pretty selfish thing.) Anyway my point is at the end of the day all my writing about abuse is for myself, so for people to feel enlightened or helped by it is just really neat and I'm glad for it. I don't know what makes it seem academic, but, I dunno, I seem to be fairly good at giving off the impression that I have more of a formal education than I have. Trust me when I say this was a skill consciously taught to me by my (ex)-family, with upward social mobility in mind, lol. It's served me well in many situations but it is also, like, idk, a weird often shitty survival/defence mechanism. Make of that what you will, I am from a family of people who survived by putting on shows, and I think probably I've inherited some weird tendencies esp regarding a compulsive public persona from that. Types in Depth #2: ESFJ

Sorry I am dragging. Apologies to anyone who may be waiting on this series.

Observing Functions: Se, Si, Ne, Ni

Judging Functions: Te, Ti, Fe, Fi

According to the CAPT, the ESFJ type is around 9-13% of the population in the United States, with men being around 5-8%, while the women are around 12-17% of their respective population.

Cousins of ENFJ in judging (Fe-Dominant, Ti-Inferior), and ESTJ in perception (Si-Auxiliary, Ne-Tertiary).

ESTJ prefers functions in this order: Fe-Si-Ne-Ti; however, unhealthy ESFJ can engage in Fe-Ne loops, and/or fall into Ti grip.

Suggested processing is Fe-Si-Ne-Ti.

Fe dominant features in ESFJ makes them caretakers. The dominant preference keeps their Ti relatively under-preferred, which tends to be their area of weakness. it doesn’t meant that ESFJ types are illogical; they’re more than capable of reasoning things out logically; they just won’t generally choose the “logical answer” over a “peaceful answer.” It also probably is better if they do not choose to access Ti directly due to the limitation placed on Ti through their function stacks.

ESFJ mindset works for effectuating mass-level cooperative task completion (Fe dominant), with a focus on maintaining the status quo or improving upon the status quo (Si auxiliary gives ESFJ strong understanding of what worked in the past, and the Ne tertiary gives ESFJ troubleshooting abilities in anticipating some of the negative consequences that should be avoided when executing the plan). When done correctly, ESFJ will achieve effective understanding of the human condition and cooperation, which will hopefully fulfill the ESTJ’s inferior Ti desire, whatever that may be.

The functions themselves do not come with good/bad labels; merely, how well they’re used by that individual to achieve their specific desires and goals. There are well functioning ESFJ who gets needs met and gets the job done. Then there are the ESFJ who are manipulative through use of emotions and does whatever they feel is logical (one of the side effects of Ti inferiority, I am afraid). The lower psychological awareness of Ne-Ti makes them especially sensitive to not being seen as “intellectual.” Even if their academic records prove otherwise.

There is often a big desire to engage in Fe hobbies due to the nature of Fe not being needed in general “workplace” America. Fe users tend to hold lots of house parties, engage in gardening, civic activities, and such activities as hobbies due to their need to satisfy Fe; they’re often quite excellent in these endeavors and are great hosts. Unfortunately, With Fe overdose comes Ti inferiority. These can be seen through:

Incessant curiosity of what the “neighbors are doing.” Most of the time, Fe users fall into the “OMG, did you see what Petra was wearing the other day? So inappropriate, and during daytime too!” or “I can’t believe Kim Kardashian makes so much money doing such indecent things! They have no morals!”

A/N: Not all Fe users do this, but a lot of them do, especially when there are more than one or two of them, and as a Ti-user, I can’t help but be incredibly annoyed by such things… although I try my best to keep it contained.

At a wider level, I would argue that Lobbyist and interest groups (especially those of moral character) would fit into the Fe realm. One of the biggest would be the parents against violent video games; that movement comes around every once in a while in the U.S. The simple logic is that violent video games makes killers out of people as much as watching Law & Order makes lawyers out of people. However, whenever something tragic occurs, some people inevitably blame these non-human “influencers,” therefore ignoring real causes of the violence (generally, mental health, availability of firearms, or even the attitudes toward them, etc.).

I think this is what ESFJ implementation can be when applied inappropriately. It again uses an incorrect use of the functions Ti-Ne-Si-Fe, because such violence is hard for Fe types to grasp (well, for anyone really, …), which is enough to throw them into a Ti-grip. This motivates them to come up with all sorts of “links” to the cause (Ne), which tend to be around their immediate environments (Si), which are ultimately wrong (Ti), but still begs implementation with the argument that it will result in safety (Fe).

Fe-Ne Loops

Fe-Ne loop in ESFJ often appears as ESFJ gets insecure about all negative possibilities. Ne tends to only shine on negative consequences and possible scenarios when in one’s third preferred position, and the ESFJ seeks validation from others to reassure themselves that such fear will not come true. They can’t stop themselves from imagining horrible possibilities and desperately act to prevent the futures from occurring, forgetting that at least 2/3 of those negative images they have have not happened before (Si). When panicky, they would be wise to deploy Si, and ask themselves,

“How likely is it, considering my previous experiences, that this is the final straw my husband has had of my crappy potato casserole dish and decide to leave me and the children to that hussy in the office? Probably none since he ate the potato casserole without complaint.”

Maybe the hussy isn’t a hussy. Maybe they’re co-workers, and she actually has a boyfriend she is happy with, because that is what your husband told you already, repeatedly.

Ti Grip

Ti grip is difficult for me to understand simply because I use Ti for everything. However, according to literature available, Ti grip is essentially one becoming overly critical, being illogical but thinking they’re being rational and logical. Going back to my lame example of the wife and the hussy, it’s seeing a piece of lint on her husband’s suit, and thinking that the lint is from a dust particle on the hussy’s desk, which got on his suit when he sat by her desk so they could make out.

There’s no evidence of this at all, “but it makes sense!” so it must be true!

What I see in ESFJ types is their illogical use of Ne and Ti to come up with all sorts of unwarranted judgments on an individual. For example, there is an ESFJ at my workplace, who hates this other person. At one point, we were friends (although we no longer are), and she would badmouth everything about this person, even going as far to say that she felt sorry for his girlfriend because she has to deal with him (completely ignoring the fact that the girlfriend clearly wouldn’t be with him unless she liked those qualities of this person). She was critical over everyone’s behavior, but you wouldn’t know this unless you were in “her private circle.” You’d also not know how she felt about you because she’d never tell you. Naturally, my view of Fe has gotten worse, sadly. Healthy Fe user, please reach out to me, so my viewpoint clears up.

I eventually had to cut off the relationship because her criticisms of everyone in the office naturally made me realize that wherever I am not present, she would most likely give me the same treatment over something I may do that she considers to be “inappropriate.” I think she is an unhealthy ESFJ though; I don’t think all ESFJ types do this, or certainly, I hope they don’t.

She connects with so many people so easily and can talk to anyone, so I don’t exactly know why she is in a Ti grip. I tried to help (using Ne rather than Ti so I don’t bluntly hurt her feelings), but she dismissed them. So I gave up.

How to Get Out of the Ti Grip

Of course, everyone falls into grips a few times in their lives. Coming out of grips help the person grow, as they learn to access their auxiliary function in order to get out of that grip.

It is the same for ESFJ as it is for the ESTJ; use Si. Think of all of the times when something you imagined actually happened. That Si will provide the link you need to Ti, so you can make the correct logical leaps and not be the judgmental “mean girl,” unless that is what you’re gunning for. Then all the more power to ya.

There are enough ESFJ types that will encourage such behavior, that I don’t really know how one can break that hive mind mentality; but I’m assuming that Fe-Ne loops or Ti grips cannot be pleasant for the ESFJ, who really need the proper Fe feedback to function well and be fulfilled.

They do fascinate me; just how sophisticated they can look at social settings, or how they can handle nonsense with courtesy (unless it is quirky or interesting, I zone out). So… interesting, but as my inferior Fe is always in play, best at arms length.

Time has arrived – we are preparing for our finals. A exam which will decide if you have either wasted 6 month of hopefully hard work or if you can move on …. how are we going to master our anxieties?????

I have finished my first degree in business many, many years ago. I am working (25 years later) on my second degree- kids are growing up and it would be fun to have a second opportunity to make a difference out there. Learning habits – study habits have not changed I noticed but the way we learn today surely has. Lucky you!!!! I am in my second year – in Germany we study three years since most of the general studies are done in Highschool. Another exam; I am getting a little excited. Here are my inputs and recommendations on how to use the last little bit of time we have left before the exam:

I don´t think we can master by leaning back during summer – I tried that once ….. did not really lean back …. My husband and I moved a family of 5 twice that year internationally. DONT TRY to pack too much into the weeks before, it is just not worth it. Plan well – everyone knows that right?! Martin Schuster, a psychologist and author of the book “Better learn habits” (in German “Besser lernen”) says, if you just realised what needs to get done, don´t think, just DO IT. Get your book and notes and get started.

We really need to get started with a study guide friends – even God had a plan before he sent down his helpers to create earth!!! 🙂 A plan is a must and so easy. Make sure you know what the teachers wants you to focus on. Bullet points and maybe page numbers or URL names so you don`t wast time looking around when you get to it. Ask student who have written the test before – often exams stay the same to make it easy for the people correcting.

Take your planer and see in how many weeks you have left and how many chunks of time you have on those days. (Please don´t forget to schedule your GYM time as well – better to write it right in) Why??? It has been proven that your focus will be much stronger if you take care of your body too. Mind and body are connected. why do we need to exercise when we study hard. “Recent human and animal studies show that regular aerobic exercise has profound effects on the brain. A recent New York Times article, “How Exercise Could Lead To A Better Brain” , describes experiments performed on mice at the University of Illinois. Mice who ran regularly on a wheel had more neurons—brain cells—than those who did not.” (http://www.aiuniv.edu/blog/september-2012/5-reasons-college-students-should-make-time-for-exercise) I am sure you can find even better sources then the one above.

Summaries what ever your need to know – time might be a little short – you have a few options my dear:

Asks someone who has done it already and use your friends work as study notes.

Write it up yourselves, the more effective way, since what ever you write will also stay with you ) According to

a recent study in a forthcoming issue of the journal Psychological Science, using pen and paper, not laptops, to take notes boosts memory and the ability to retain and understand concepts.)

Record your notes and listen to them everywhere you go. (We went on a family bike ride for over a week – I had recordings of my books and listened to chapters one at a time. I am really surprised how much has stayed with me!!!!

If you can not memorise certain parts of the stuff you need to know – try making a personal connection. I am studying sociology, Bourdieu is one of the most important sociologist we will remember for a long time. He talks a lot about the HABITUS, the power of social change. He approaches power within the context of a comprehensive “theory of society” which like that of Faucault. Bourdieu said that a created HABITUS is created through a social process, rather than individual process leading to patterns that are enduring and transferrable from one context to another. Basically if you are born into a family who likes to live simple, education were limited due to financial reasons or tradition, Bourdieu said that you will only under rare circumstances change who you are, you wont be able to change that since moving up a level in society will make you rather uncomfortable, noticing the unfamiliarly of it, further more, you need more money and connection to get the same education or live like the group above you or better the group who plays in a different field (he difference in different forms of “capital” in his theory) .. long story, very interesting and go and read his books. .

“MY personal links, I create to remember his theory and connect his thoughts to others of his kind completely, are the people around me and my own upbringing, I try to transfer it to my life and at times use names I have a relation to … like Uncle Gerd … or remember, Grandpa Kneip ….”.

Study-help is important, index cards, posters, mind maps, recordings, Skype chats with other fellow students. ( I work with other students a lot via Skype to repeat material and discuss – very produktive!!!)

Structure is kind of essential believe me. I have children which like to interrupt. Finding blogs of study time will help you to fallow your list. Working alone in a library can be boring and demotivating, but a few hours alone time in the library will not hurt you. Take a break in between, to be honest, every hour at least, just for 10 minutes or so. Picture your brain like a muscle, they also need to rest and stretched so often. Healthy behaviour: If you can not purchase lots of fruits and vegetable (typically for students) make sure to take subelements. Your body and your brain is very complex and need good mix of healthy nutrition – not just pizza and chocolate.

A study has shown that a freshman, one in four students, gain 10 lbs or more in their first year of college. Ultimately, fast food and unhealthy snacks simply don´t provide you with the nutrition you need to perform well in school. A good diet can enhance your academic performance. Go for it!

I believe that your daily calorie intake should not be more than 2200 calories a day if you are between 19 and 30 years of age. (according to USDA). I don´t have that pleasure anymore … so, much less for me since I am much above 30 … and unfortunately my system has slowed down … nevertheless … I cheat by working hard at the GYM. Some sweets are good for the soul! By going to the GYM, I can avoid the the pounds I don´t need to have on my hips and clear my mind. (My mother was really obsessed with her weight for many many years …. I inherited that part and get very sensitive about it. Still, you have to find your own comfort level, just make sure its healthy for you – since you are worth it :)!!!!

Get rest, more than 24 hours of sleep has the same weakening result than 1.0 level of alcohol in blood. Get your 7 – 8 hrs a night and built a routine. Best of luck. I will stop here and prepare for my own exam now. Writing is a wonderful task and I hope this blog might help you a little. Nothing magical and every has been said many times, but here just a slide reminder.

What's been going on?

Ok, let's put everything on the table: I've been overweight from a very young age and from a very young age I've been trying to lose weight.I've had many successes and twice as many failures along the way. My motivation has taken many forms - wanting to be the "popular" girl, wanting to be perfect, wanting to have a boyfriend etc. etc. Surprisingly, my motivation has never stemmed from wanting to be all around healthier - until now. Leaving the unhealthy, highly restrictive, and highly processed eating patterns behind, I am now focusing on: 1. Nutrient dense whole foods 2. Incorporating more veggies 3. High carb (instead of high protein low carb which left me constantly hungry and tired) 4. Eliminating/limiting processed foods 5. Eating 1700 Cal/day (Ultimately, I want to be able to eat around 2000cal/day however, I've been laying in bed for most of the day. Once I start work in June I'll be more active and will increase my daily intake. Also, eating nutrient dense whole foods and high carb have kept me fuller longer) Previously my exercise mainly consisted of cardio equipment for 2hrs, burning at least 1000cals. Obviously that is not sustainable, especially because I have more responsibilities. Currently, my fitness has soared to new lows which is unacceptable. I deserved to have a healthy body and mind. Starting slow and steady, I've decided to do Beachbody Insanity. Today is Day #1. Finally, I'm looking to do a 360 with my life. This year I've hit rock bottom, mentally, emotionally, physically, academically, career wise, and in just about every way you can think of. I'm tired of felling sorry for myself. I deserve better and it is up to me to give me everything my heart desires and more. I'll use this blog to record my progress (not limited to fitness), feelings, thoughts, goals, and anything else I see fit. Love, Nicole - Following my heart's desires

She is an entrepreneur, a former college professor, professional speaker and communication expert and also an author of a book we’re going to talk about today called Dynamic Communication, 27 strategies to grow, lead and manage your business. So Jill, thanks for joining me.

Jill: John, thanks so much for having me!

John: So you’re book which is out in March of 2017 dependent on when you’re listening to this. It’s coming out on Entrepreneur Press, I wonder if you could talk a little bit — I know I have a lot of aspiring authors, I have a lot of authors that listen to this show. I interview a lot of authors. But, I don’t know that I’ve specifically spoken to anybody who has gone through the process with Entrepreneur Press, so I’d love to hear how that experience was.

Jill: Honestly it’s been better than I expected it to be John. I have done the publishing — the self publishing route, the academic publishing route back when I was doing my professor thing. But for this one I had heard from so many people that going with a traditional publisher is just complicated and there’s going to be so much push-back on ideas and content and formatting, and honestly? That wasn’t my experience at all. So I feel incredibly grateful to have been picked up by Entrepreneur Press because they’re a smaller publishing arm, they don’t choose as many books. But the books they choose they genuinely do believe in and what was great for me in choosing them over a couple of other publishers that I looked at, is that with them they have a whole marketing arm and a whole marketing enterprise behind them that they lend to the book and that was really my deciding factor.

John: And they are still very tied to the magazine right?

Jill: Very much so. It’s all the same. Entrepreneur media is a parent company and then there’s the magazine, Entreprenuer.com, Entrepreneur Press and now Entrepreneur network which is their video arm.

John: And they will likely get you maybe some speaking gigs at some of their events I’m guessing?

Jill: Yep. That’s a plan. They got me a full page ad in the print magazine in the March issue which was probably one of the most surreal moments I’ve had in my life where I’m flipping through the magazine and I’m like, “Oh my gosh! That’s my book in there! This is so incredible!” And they’re doing lots of promos on the website, we’re doing stuff together in collaboration with video etcetera. It’s just a lot of stuff going on but again to have that support infrastructure behind me really distinguished them in my mind from any of the other presses that I could have gone with.

John: So maybe I want to back up a little bit. How did it differ from writing a book in — that was a textbook in academia. Did you just kind of — I mean do they do the same thing where you have an advance and you get royalties or do you mind sharing that?

Jill: Oh not a problem at all. So in the academic world it is very different because there’s a certain amount of credentialing that goes on that other, you know in the trade press or the commercial press where all your credentialing is tied to your ability to market and have an audience. And in the academic world it’s largely tied to your name and your academic accolades. So for me, when I came in on the text book I was actually a co-author and I was chosen by the original authors because I actually taught the class using a version of a text book and I went to them and proactively told them why this book didn’t work in reality for students. And they were, you know a little shocked at my candour but they realised I was right and they needed to bring in that perspective. So doing that, you know there’s advance, there’s royalties, there’s all those things too but you don’t have to worry about marketing at all, there was never a single marketing conversation that I ever had being part of the academic press route. Whereas from day one, even before day one when you’re putting together your proposal for a more traditional or commercial press, your proposal is about half of 50-some pages I submit are on marketing.

John: Yeah. You know I sound a little cynical when I say this but I think sometimes the traditional publishers care less about what you had to say and more about your platform.

Jill: No I actually don’t think you should sound cynical at all because I think that’s pretty factual.

John: So you are you know… kind of heading now into the next phase of the book and you had mentioned you wanted to talk a little bit about this. What has been your approach now to you know, coming full face knowing that I’ve got this book now I have to market it and I’ve committed to marketing it. What are some of the things you have done that you — obviously you don’t know the ultimate results at this recording. But what are some of the things you have done that you think are going to set you up for success?

Jill: There’s a number of things that if I may John, can I kind of give everyone a back-story in context so this makes a little more sense?

John: Totally.

Jill: I think a lot of people and this is myself included so it’s pot calling kettle black? 6:04 and then I finally realised what I was doing and changed it mid-course. But when you are thinking about writing a book, you’re thinking about what ideas you want to get out, what IP you have, what methodologies you have and you want to get out there because you know it’s good information. And it’s great to have confidence in that. And that’s what I did with the proposal and it ended up being picked up. But mid way through it, in fact about 45 days from the manuscript due date for the entire book I had this ah ha! Moment. And this moment came to me because I thought how am I even in this position in the first place? And if you rewind the very long story short, is I launched a YouTube series, 52 videos back in September of 2012, a year later it wasn’t doing what I wanted so I really got geeky with YouTube analytics and figured things out. Now that thing is at about three quarters of a million views for that series and it keeps growing, it got picked up by Entrepreneur’s video network where I was one of their original partners, which spawned then me writing for the magazine and for the column, and doing live stream personality and ultimately, them asking if they could have an opportunity to view my next book proposal. And when I go back to the roots of what attracted them to me in the first place – it wasn’t some fancy model, it wasn’t some methodology or some IP or me pushing ideas out, it was me giving bite-sized pieces of information that people could easily digest. And when I got back to those roots about what attracted people to me in the first place, not exactly what I was pushing out but what attracted people to me, I realized I need to scrap the entire book and start over. And my editor thought I was nuts, but she loved the idea so instead of writing about this one major concept within business communication and making a whole book about that, I decided to scratch that and instead put together a book of 27 strategies across 8 different areas of business communication that can really be more of a reference guide for people. So you pick it up, you know where you’re having a problem, you find that chapter, you read it maybe five to ten pages and boom, you’re done. And it’s so much more impactful that way, when I go back to the roots of how my customers, how my audience wants to access that information. And I think a lot of us lose sight of that when we’re so stuck in our own heads with our ideas.

John: So that’s where it became the 27 strategies as part of the subtitle. So quite frankly that sounds a little scary to me too, going back and rewriting because you know, I know those last 45 days on the books I’ve written you know, I’m just trying to get the darn thing done. And so the idea of starting from scratch must have been a little scary.

Jill: It was a bit intimidating. And at the same time once I realized that I had already written or presented on so many of these ideas, I ended up going to my recordings, going through past articles, sent old speeches off to get transcribed and started going through to see what content I already had that was valuable. So it was starting from scratch in terms of the pure sense, but it wasn’t because I’ve done this teaching before, I’ve done these presentations, I’ve done these keynote speeches. And it was really fleshing them out and then what I did was every day to try and have some semblance of health because let me be honest, I was very unhealthy and staying up late and eating food I shouldn’t have been eating during this process because you just need to crank it out. But every day I’d go take a walk, I live right by central park and I’d get up, I’d take a walk in the park and I would voice dictate a chapter during that hour walk almost every single day, and then come back and edit and fine-tune it.

John: That’s funny my — I’ve written five books now. My first book was actually the easiest to write and I think that’s because of that same thing. I — It took my 10 years sort of to write it but all I was really doing was just doing the stuff that I put in the book. The actual writing I think I did in about 90 days, because it was just what I had been living.

So should everyone write a book? Jill: No. Absolutely not.

John: I love asking everybody that question because everybody is writing a book. So why do you say no?

Jill: There are… if you feel the need to write a book for you, that’s great do it. But that’s not a need for a consumer, that’s your own personal need and when you’re thinking about the marketability of a book, what happens I think so often is that everybody who is a business owner, who’s into entrepreneurship, or who wants to be a thought leader or a speaker, or anything like that you’re told you need to have a book, it’s creditability, you need to have a book, it’s creditability. But people put out these books which are quite frankly complete crap. They’re not professional edited, they’re not professionally formatted and they sell next to no copies. So it’s really not doing you much of a service to have that. If you’re in business, and you’re not thinking in your gut that I know a book is the right thing for me, I think it is much more impactful from a marketing perspective to have a lot of short-form content out there that is more engaging to help you build that audience and then maybe after you’ve been in it for a while that book that you need to write – not just for you but for your audience as well will come about.

John: It’s funny I actually received an email a copy of days ago from somebody who had written a book and that book had actually been out for about 30 days and they were now inquiring whether I could help them market that book. And I felt like saying you’re about six years too late, no. Really the marketing of a book starts just as you described there. In many cases, most of the best selling business books took years to write because the marketing was building community and as you said, doing the videos and finding out what resonates with people and in a lot of ways kind of having the built in audience before you even start writing the book – I mean what’s your take on sort of, now that you’ve kind of gone into it head long, how do you start that marketing process?

Jill: I think it’s essential. And again for me you heard my short story just about the video content. Well alongside that video content there was short-form content, there were other videos, webinars, blogs, whitepapers, e-books, blah blah blah. All those things that let me gain an audience over time. Which I think is important and it also tells you how your audience likes to best consume your information. Again, what I was doing wrong with the initial book proposal was I was doing it the way I wanted explain it, but not the way that my audience necessarily wanted to hear it. And the other thing you can do to kind of — I don’t want to say shortcut the process because there’s really no shortcuts. I mean, I’ve been studying what I’ve been studying for, you know a decade and a half and then some. And I’ve been doing my own business for over five years and in the grand scheme of things that’s not that long, but I’ve built up a good critical mass. But one of the things I did for this book that is a strategy that anyone can replicate, either before they write a book and put it into the book or doing it afterwards, was for me once I identified these 27 strategies that I knew I wanted to write about, I reached out to 27 people who I think are brilliant in different ways and had them add commentary to that. And I got 20 – 30-minute interviews from all these people, I put those as excerpts which I think put on my YouTube which then got syndicated on entrepreneurs video network. And you can see the snowball impact that would have. But it’s also getting other people that aren’t your client community but are your peer community, or people who would attract a slightly different audience to contribute, to make the idea bigger than just you.

John: Yeah and that works on so many levels too because I mean in a lot of ways you’re helping create an asset for them, you’re helping promote them. Obviously, they’re going to extend their community to some extent to you. So it works on so many levels and it really has a kind of amplification element to it, doesn’t it?

Jill: It does and I want to be clear that I know that with the press that I have chosen and being affiliated with a major business publication like Entrepreneur magazine I have a bit of a different way to go about it when I was going and talking to the people who have you know, very very internationally known names in business, I had an ask for them that wasn’t just hey can I interview you but in exchange this will also be released on Entrepreneur’s video network that would be something on Entreprenuer.com. I had something that I could give back. And I realized a lot of people listening are not going to be in that same situation where you have this long-term relationship with a media company. But what I would challenge you do think is even if you’ve already written your book, and maybe you’re just thinking about marketing now or you’re thinking about how you may want to do it in the future is this interview approach is money in my opinion. Even if you already have a book out and maybe you want to breathe new life into it, interview people who speak, think, serve, produce, have a product in the same area in different aspects of your book and have a conversation with them. Where you agree, where you disagree, what are tips and have that really collegial conversation and view them not as competition but as collaborators. Because then you can post a nice quality video asset, you can get that transcribed, repurpose it into blog posts, into mini audio columns etcetera. That will spread the love for both of you and give your book new life.

So are you doing anything to — in the actual launch window, some of the promotional you know, premium content things, joint ventures, anything along those lines to really give it that kick in the pants?

Jill: Yeah I mean I’m doing the what seems to be pretty standard now, the thunderclap campaigns and then I have a small — not even a small — a list of about 100 some really dedicated advocates who are doing things on their own end to push words out with personal emails, personal videos, that type of thing. But what I also have done is with all of these interviews for anybody who pre-buys the book and of course, anyone who purchases it after the fact, pre-buying just gets you this content immediately. All 12+ hours of interviews are uploaded with links and additional resources in a master members site for anyone who pre-buys the book and the benefit of that is you get access to that right now instead of having to wait until later. And then for anyone who buys the book one of my big things you know, my heart is an educators heart, I just don’t do it in a traditional education setting and so I’ve created a workbook resource that you can use alongside you to actually help implement strategies. So whether you’re facing a sales or presentation strategy or maybe a teamwork challenge or something with really cultivating feedback for your teams that actually gets followed through on whatever those challenges are that you’re facing in your business capacity, there’s actionable worksheets to help guide you through for those who need that additional step-by-step implementation.

John: Awesome. Let’s talk a little bit about the content of the book, we’ve spent a lot of time talking about marketing. But — so let’s break the title down first. What is the definition of dynamic communication as opposed to good communication?

Jill: When I think of communication and I think well most people think of it, we think of the words and maybe we think of the delivery of the words, but good communication doesn’t just mean your ability to put together a grammatically correct sentence or to speak without saying the words umm or uhh. To me, good, great communication is communication that delivers results so I pause at dynamic communication as something that is communication aimed towards to being proactive to delivery action orientated results and we judge the efficacy of our communication based on outcomes instead of the input. So many times we think oh look I have this very beautifully crafted message so the input is great but you’re not getting the outcomes you desire so to me, that’s not impactful or affective.

John: So you tying – since we’re talking about results — you’re tying dynamic communication to leading and managing and growing a business. So how does somebody take that leap — I think a lot of times people think of communication like they see it in a sales environment, you know pretty easy to measure that you’re getting the sale or you’re not getting the sale, that might be the measure of result. But how about leading and management? How do you measure the effectiveness of communication there?

Jill: There’s so many different ways. Depending again on what the venue and what the goal is. But for example in the book, it’s 27 strategies divided into eight different topic areas. Eight different areas that you will face at different points in time in your business. So yeah, there’s the basics, there’s sales, there’s customers service, there’s marketing generating materials, videos, webinars, all that type of stuff. But then there’s also public communication. So we’re talking about communication during a crisis, we’re talking about communication to public audiences, communication in bigger speeches to mass audiences, internal, external and consumer. And then you’re look at how internally do you communicate? How are you managing your globally dispersed teams? The virtual teams that we have, how are you giving feedback to employees when you’re having those sessions when you’re wanting to create change, are people actually following through? Are they buying into your ideas? Are you seeing those things developed and of course are your employee’s staying around?

John: Sure. Yeah I think a lot of people underestimate the communication, the storytelling that is a big part of leadership and building a culture where everybody feels a part of it. So great. We often think in terms of communication as the you know, what I said. But you present in the book that one of the biggest skills in communication is how you listen. In fact you have something called the four stage listening matrix, so you want to dive into that one?

Jill: Yeah sure. The listening matrix. So this is an example though. I could write a whole book on the listening matrix right? But let’s be honest, me fleshing that out for 250 pages is way more than needs to be done which is why doing in my opinion, this more short form content that as a book was a strategy shift that I made. So just for people out there who are fussing with ideas in your head you can think of it in that way. But the listening matrix to me is all about really understanding the current sales economy that we are in John and to me that is an information economy. We have more access to information than ever before. But there is a growing gap from my perspective between information and knowledge. And the gap itself isn’t necessarily the problem but it’s when your consumers, your employees or people are mistaking information for knowledge when a problem arises. So the listening matrix is a way to understand how other people are listening to you. So for example, if you’re in a sales conversation, are people listening to you for information? Or are people listening to you for knowledge? And the different is between action and inaction. People don’t make decisions based on information, people making buying decisions based on knowledge. But our sales teams are overwhelmingly trained to give out information and not to help the consumer co-create knowledge. And so the matrix walks you through four different stages so you not only can identify how someone’s listening to you, but the questions that you can use to transition them from information to knowledge listening.

John: Yeah I think that is so crucial for salespeople, you’re right. I even think about my own buying experiences anymore, I have all the information already, I just need somebody to put some insight into it or to help me figure out how it might actually work in my particular situation and I think that’s the job of sales people today it’s — because everyone is going online and getting the basic information.

Jill: It’s absolutely true yet so many companies are still hiring based on the old definition of an old sales person, to me it’s not a sales person anymore. I would call the role a product integrator for example or a service integrator. These people are actively helping you gain the knowledge of how a company’s product or service would integrate within your business, would integrate in your needs. It’s not about sales, it’s showing how something would actually work in your world.

John: Yeah I’m seeing more and more companies, particularly if they have anything that does take — it’s not an off the shelf kind of product. I mean there are almost engineers or almost… some of the best sales people because they’re designing a solution based on what’s there as opposed to a sales script, that they were taught to deliver.

Jill: It’s so true. And I think I’ve worked with a couple of sales engineering teams for software products and a lot of the challenge there is then getting them to communication with what I call common communication denominators, another chapter in the book. And get out of their jargon, get out of their acronyms and figure out how to explain these more technical processes to people who are not IT based people. Customer service for the IT world used to be I’m a customer service person and I’m talking to an IT person because we provide a hosted solution. With cloud based solutions that’s no longer the case, your end user the person you talk to is typically a marketer or a salesperson, it’s very different.

John: Yeah and nine times out of ten they’re trying to figure out how to integrate what you have with the three other things they have —

Jill: Exactly.

John: So it’s a whole matrix every time you go into it. So you actually proposed since we’re on the topic of sales that throughout your you use a call outline, what’s a call outline look like?

Jill: A call outline to me is where you have the key objectives that you want to accomplish during the call itself, if you’re doing a sales call. So many times you know, I had a call earlier today actually you know, hi is this the owner of DynamicAcceletator.com? Yes it is. Hi, we’re a website designing company — and they’re just going through this list instead of just right off the bat saying you’re the owner of a new domain, do you already have a web development solution? Just get right to the point and asses the information that you need because for me, I do all my own site development. I am a programming geek in the background, that’s something I like to do for fun. So you’re wasting my time going through a script. Same thing goes for — I’m sure most people out there have had this experience when you fill out a form online because you want some more detailed knowledge about a product. You’ve gotten the information but now you need a free demo, a free trial. You get on the line for that demo and they walk you step by step through ever little feature of their product, not even taking the time to understand how it goes for you. Well that’s done based on a call sheet. Instead using a call outline, you can divide your product or service into different you know, silos or parts and ascertain right at the beginning if that customer or potential customer needs information or better yet, knowledge on that portion. And if not, address their immediate needs first before going into any type of additional features and benefits. Because when people have questions, they want answers and if you’re a person who doesn’t waste their time and provide them with the answers, they’re more likely to let you spend time explaining some other features or benefits that you have. But if you waste their time in the beginning going through things that aren’t relevant to their situation you’re going to lose them. And so then an outline is way more beneficial than a script.

John: Yeah and I love that idea of an outline but boy does it also — you shake your head and think commonsense would be nice too.

Jill: It would be but unfortunately as we know common sense is not all that well, common.

John: I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done that where I’ll have the pre-call, I’ll tell them exactly what I do, what my level of knowledge is, what I’m looking for and then you get on the call and just as you said and it’s just basically okay, first you turn it on, then you’re like seriously? We just went through this.

Jill: It’s unbelievable but you know what? Again it’s part of the institutional training that’s happening in these companies and again, companies are you going to need to start shifting how they hire sales people, it’s not anymore your ability to follow a script word for word, but the ability to improvise, the ability to anticipate, the ability to be proactive, all those things in my opinion are way more important now and in the future.

John: I’ve actually seen — there was a little bit of a trend about a year ago that people were sending their sales teams to do improv.

Jill: Yes.

John: And I think that’s — so there are people that are getting that I guess. I want to end on one last topic. First off, before we get to it, where can people find out more about dynamic communication and about your work?

John: So I want to end on public speaking. A lot of people are doing that more and more. I think it’s a tremendous way to generate leads in the right environment, certainly a great way to enhance your thought leadership or your perceived expertise. So how do you make your presenting, I don’t know if you have a model for this but how do you make your — what do you tell people as kind of a strategy for making your presentations more dynamic?

Jill: When you think about making a presentation, again it’s the same thing I’ll go back to the same philosophy, it’s not about you and your ideas, it’s about what your audience needs and wants to hear. So I like to think of presentations in a couple of different ways but the first thing I would say to someone just starting out is, reverse engineer it. Think about what you want your audience to leave the room with or doing or what action you want them to take, and then go backwards and really start to understand what your audiences wants to hear the information or the knowledge they need to take that action step. And then figure out how you can best match what you know with what your audience knows and wants to hear. I mean there’s a lot of different frameworks for organizing it but I think the most important is, especially if you’re doing a presentation with a sales objective or an immediate action objective, which most of us are if we’re giving a presentation, especially if it’s for lead generation, is going in there and making sure it’s very clear in your presentation what the need is. Establishing the need in a very clear way and not in a way that’s jargony to your product but in a way that’s more universal that’s related to the human element. You know for example, if you were talking about trolling on the internet, so let’s say you wanted to get into that and how people view all of these people who post negative comments online as trolls and as evil people well, you know what let’s back up a little bit, let’s contextualize that so people can actually be in the minds of these people. So I could say John, have you ever been in a situation where you were stuck in traffic and you either laid on your horn or showed a certain finger, or yelled in some way that you know what? Is really not indicative of who you are as a person, it was just that situation. You give some kind of analogy that gets everyone understanding the bigger concept on a personal level and then once they do that you have them hooked into this idea in a way that they understand it. And then you can deliver satisfaction steps and more.
