So saw a post about Shadowheart's racism towards Githyanki and hating her for that. Saying it's gross etc. I thought it was pretty mild? Considering what the Githyanki are and what they do, I was expecting a lot more racism when you play as one or towards Lae'zel. They aren't nice.

I had a long, long, long diatribe about this, but I wound up editing it to hell and back. I agree with you anon. I think it goes to show you how desperate the camp crew was when they put up with Lae'zel after the mountain pass crèche turns out to be a dud.

Anyways.

If people are singling out Shadowheart for being aggressive towards the literal imperialist slaver race of turbo space fascists and calling that racism, I don't know nor do I care to know about it. Not showing the githzerai has, I think, kinda rotted some BG3-only people's brains since they don't see that it's not about the gith as a species but it's about their imperial culture. It's especially annoying when there are much more direct parallels to racism in-game, structural and otherwise (Astarion with the Gur, Lae'zel with the tieflings, Rivington/Emerald Grove with the refugees).

I get the folks that feel the Shadowheart v. githyanki thing as racism, so I won't speak to their feelings. I will say that it's very definitely more a specific case of "girl stole shit from an empire known for murdering wantonly and is trying to avoid interacting with them at all costs" at the very beginning of the game.

Personally, I'm much more interested in talking about the fandom's general treatment of the slightly corrupted prince charming character (normally a fandom favorite in RPGs) as a second-class citizen. He's "useless" and "not that interesting" this time, for some reason?

Not sure why that could be happening.

oouhhgg ok so thats. a hard one. im gonna split it between humans and demons bc that is a really different metric, and also i like gushing abt character design <33

human designs? probably between uzui and shinobu. they're both so completely in-line with who they are as people. uzui's look is Loud and Sparkly in such a way that feels very personalized and Intentional, for lack of a better term. he knows what he's doing and he's pulling it off! simple as! the eye makeup, the gloves, the Huge Fucking Dual Cleavers? absolutely On Point. shinobus design, to me, is more Character Focused than actually Looks Focused. the butterfly haori+hairclip is Such an iconic look, but its also what it means for her Character. that haori-- and her standard uniform-- feel just a bit too large for her. the sleeves cover her hands, constantly fluttering behind her-- even the pants feel slightly unfit. That paired with her constantly placid expression and even tone of speaking-- it really does say volumes. its such a stark reminder of how... unfit she is, for lack of a better term. how she's trying to fit into being a person that she Isnt in an attempt to cope with the loss of someone deeply important to her. also the butterfly silhouette she gets when she is in motion? Absolutely Peak.

(also cheating a little to mention mitsuri my best friend mitsuri who wins on account of being mitsuri)

demon designs? these are less for Character Reasons and more for "ayo what the fuck" reasons but: the hand demon and gyokko. the hand demon (who im so miffed doesnt have a name iirc) is fucking terrifying and does such a good job marking that narrative hurdle for tanjiro of the final selection. its monstrous. its scary. It Sure Is A Hand Demon! mustve been Awful to animate, but damn they pulled it off. and gyokko... Look At Him. look at him? look at him. ive drawn him exactly one time and it was simultaneously awful and ridiculously fun. what a freak.

I tell people in the servers I'm in that Shad would loathe being a king, but the purple outfit makes him look really regal. I think his gerudo outfits are much more bold and rich-colored than his other clothes. Probably bc they might be formal wear? Idk, I'm still brainstorming.

I actually laughed a little when this question came into my ask box cause the answer is not at fucking all. Q'ihnn and Ophianne are both incredibly smart and have made really big accomplishments academically (archon and machinist yk) but neither of them ever found it that important. Even Ophianne, who sacrificed a TON to get Q'ihnn a sharlayan education as teens, never really thought the education part was that important - it was a means to better living conditions for her brother.

Academic achievement is kinda just a hobby to them, there's plenty of other stuff to do to survive. They enjoy it in about the same way they enjoy cooking. Actually,,, no they enjoy cooking a lot more, they're not sane about cooking.

I saw the Asim (possibly Draconia) and Mei ask, and as someone who is mayhaps possibly a lil mentally ill about the game as I have read most of the manga, watched almost all of the chronicles videos, and am up to date on the main story along with having all of Mei's battlesuits minus lightning Empress I feel like I can say YES YES YES (which I must say is pretty tame compared to other I get shocked at the fandom sometimes wow)

It fits more with Asim because the status of the Asim family and the Raiden family are similar, big corporations with lots of influence.

Though I don't necessarily know what would be the catalyst for the change in Asim as for Mei, that change was Kiana, looking for her and trying to save her, which leads to her joining World Serpent after they give her a solution for saving her and then she's sent to the Elysian Realm where most of her development takes place

Some context:

Mei was originally an heiress who was beloved by her classmates until her father was charged with fraud, he ran away to avoid being arrested and left Mei behind. Everyone turned against her, she learned that they only liked her because of her family and the business she would've inherited and become closed off; hearing a voice beckoning her to get revenge on everyone who wronged her, she agrees with the voice it revealed itself as the Herrscher core of Thunder, she then becomes the Herrscher of Thunder causing an outbreak that destroyed the city and killed most of their classmates. Wrecked with guilt realizing what she had done, she attempts to kill herself but is stopped by Kiana Kaslana, a transfer student. They escape with another girl they meet named Bronya or try to as they were found by a Valkyrie sent to investigate the outbreak named Himeko Murata who takes them to the granddaughter and principal of a Valkyrie training school, Theresa Apocolypse, who enrolls them in said school, called St. Freya High School and that's basically where the game starts.

Over the story, even after this, she goes from a warm and kind girl that is kind of naive and hopeful to a more mature, colder, yet still a kind girl whose more grounded and isn't as hopeful and can move on from past grievances and make up with those she once fought with as she can look at situations with more of a logical and grown standpoint instead of the emotional and immature one she used previously.

For some more in-depth Mei backstory, I give the chronicles/ operation center video on her, and I'll add Kiana's as a plus because I love them. You don't need to watch these, but these btw I just think these are good resources to have
