being a reincarnation and all, mysta vaguely remembers being a kitsune in his former life. he would revisit his memories in his sleep when he had a particularly bad day and the more he got to see, the more he wanted to be a kitsune again.

of course living as said creature was difficult as it was, foreign people constantly trying to kill him for “good luck” and “fortune”; mysta was never that kind of kitsune to begin with and looking back on it, his hatred towards those already dead people grew every day.

being a reincarnation also had some… difficulties. said being scars which developed on his skin after he hit puberty. one particularly big one, right at his throat, was the one that scared him the most.

turned out that one of those hunters managed to catch him eventually (with a nasty trap that left dark red marks along his right ankle). in order to get the fortune and luck, they had cut his throat — deep and with a katana that definitely had seen better days before.

so mysta was now running around with proof of him getting slaughtered hundreds of years ago (well, his former body, to be exact, but it seemed like those injuries had reached deep down to his anxious soul, scarring it forever). he chose to wear a black leather choker to cover up the scary red line, hoping nobody would ever find out.

that was until he met Iuxiem.

they gradually grew suspicious and curious at all the different kinds of scars they had found on mysta’s body; after the first scar mysta spend an entire night laying in bed with his notes app open, making up stories about every blemish his body had.

except for the one under his trusted choker, hugging his skin just perfectly, giving him comfort and the feeling of security. he was set on never revealing it to anyone because he wanted to keep that little piece of his soul to himself and himself only — it wasn’t like he didn’t trust his genmates, he just felt more comfort knowing he could dwell over his past life on his own, reminiscing how the fresh spring grass would feel under his bare feet, how kind and welcoming every kind of animal treated him, how respectful locals were.

but now it was just “oh, when i was a kid i fell down a tree” or “my middle school bullies pushed me and i fell on a sharp stone” or “i accidentally cut myself there once” or “i had a bike accident” — mysta was keen on keeping it a secret, something to hug while laying in his grave.

the house was empty, silence was washing over every room (not that mysta cared, he was wearing his headphones while watching a video and getting some paperwork done).

summer heat was getting onto him so he had to wear a tank top luca borrowed him weeks ago. after an hour or two, the detective decided to take a cold and quick shower before relaxing. after grabbing fresh boxer briefs, he stepped into the big bathroom he shared with shu and luca (vox and ike were living downstairs) and got ready to shower.

he left his trusty choker on the sink, inspected the dark red scar on his way too light skin (he should go outside more often) and turned on the water.

shu entered the house, his earbuds playing some podcast episode he stopped paying attention to for the past 30 minutes, and with a quick glance at the shoes next to the front door, he figured mysta was still the only one home.

the sorcerer got rid of his own shoes and carried his backpack with him upstairs. he found some interesting pocky flavors in an asian store petra had dragged him into so he bought some for his housemates to try. he was scared of the heat melting the chocolate so he hurried home and desperately needed a shower.

he grabbed new clothes and made his way to the bathroom, the podcast now playing some outro music, which reminded him he should probably take out the earbuds.

he pushed the door open and to his surprise, a completely wet mysta stood in front of the sink, towel around his waist, and a brush in his hand.

shu’s eyes immediately caught the change of expressions on the detective’s face, then the scar on his neck- mysta’s hands flew towards it, covering it up.

shu instantly pulled the door close, a deep red blush covering his whole face: “shoot, i’m so sorry- i- i- didn’t know you were- the- the door was unlocked so-“ his whole throat went dry, the image of mysta covered in water droplets and scars forever burned into his memory and it felt unsettling almost.

shu knew something wasn’t right but he also knew not to pry into people’s lives — especially not mysta’s, who had, by far, the hardest time opening up to them. it was even a wonder they all knew his favorite food by now.

“don’t- don’t worry, i thought i’d be, yanno, alone for a while. i must’ve forgotten to lock the door!” silence.

“uhm i’ll hurry-“

“n-no!- it’s okay, i mean, take your time- sorry again”, the sorcerer quickly hurried back to his room, closed the door and leaned against the cold wood with his back before sliding down. hiding his head between his knees, letting out a small groan, the redness on his cheeks was still clearly visible.

his whole head was filled with mysta just standing there with red and white marks all over, and it scared shu. not even luca had those many deep and unusual scars although he got into fights pretty frequently and was just clumsy overall.

all those excuses suddenly felt so transparent to the sorcerer, especially after seeing the big red one on his neck. pieces of puzzles were slowly assembling themselves in shu’s head and after what felt like hours, he had it together.

shu was trained in the arts of supernatural things, recognizing a soul with a brand new body wasn’t something difficult — mysta was just good at hiding, pretending.

the night was young when shu carefully knocked on mysta’s door. they all had dinner two hours ago (luca brought back pizza on his way home) and the sorcerer figured they both have calmed down enough for a talk.

mysta opened the door with an anxious expression, almost as if he was waiting for shu to look for him.

“can we, uhm, talk?”, shu asked, quietly and careful to not alert the others (their awkward behaviour during dinner was already alarming enough for luca's and vox' overprotectiveness).

“uh yeah, come in”, mysta stepped aside to let him enter. they awkwardly sat next to each other on the bed, silence flooding the tense atmosphere.

“so you saw it”, the detective whispered after a few minutes, his voice sounding strained and more tired than usual.

“the scar?”, shu asked, carefully looking at the ashen. mysta nodded.

“why didn’t you-“

“because i didn’t want to… at it looks scary”, mysta quickly said, knowing what shu was about to ask.

the detective let out a deep sight before slowly opening the mechanism of the choker, taking the leather off with shaky hands. shu widened his eyes in surprise — it did look scary but he didn’t mind, he was more worried about the story behind it. scars that looked like this (rough and bumpy, uneven and like carelessly ripped paper) were just cover for deadly wounds.

“did you- did you die like this?”, shu whispered. mysta flinched as the ghost of a touch lingered on his skin and shu quickly apologized, shocked by his own reaction, now tightly holding his hands in his lap.

“i- it’s okay, you can touch it if you wanna. it doesn’t hurt or anything.” the sorcerer searched for any lies in mysta eyes and expression before putting his whole palm on his neck.

it feels nice, they both thought.

shu traced the line with the tips of his fingers, body now completely faced towards the other.

“and, uh, yeah, the scar is from the wound that killed me”, mysta muttered under his breath, the tips of his ears bright red. the sorcerer nodded understandingly and retreated his hand back into is lap.

“do you remember everything from your past life then?”, the ravenette curiously asked. it was quite rare to meet a reincarnation, shu wanted to learn as much as possible.

“kind of, yeah”, mysta nodded, still not being able to look shu into the eyes — he would’ve seen the sheer excitement gleaming up to him.

“can you tell me about it?”

how could mysta ever deny such a sweet request?

the detective started talking about the tale of a kitsune, loved and respected by a small village at the foot of a mountain, surrounded by forest and dangerous creatures.

the kitsune would protect the villagers with its powers, help them around with work and teach the children how to write and read. this peaceful life carried on for a few decades until rumors about kitsune would spread around the country.

hunters would track down every of their kind to wash their hands with kitsune blood in hope to gain everything they ever imagined but never got. past mysta was a victim of this; part of the extinction of every kitsune. the world has always been cruel to him, he figured.

shu patiently listened to him, at some point even grabbed the brunette’s hands as he noticed signs of a panic attack.

“guess i’m just destined to have a sad as fuck life”, mysta chuckled, voice dripping with sorrow and bitterness.

he was still avoiding to look into shu’s face but as black tinted fingers were placed on his cheeks and carefully moved his head, mysta could see curious purple eyes staring up to him.

shu gave him a smile: “then i’ll make sure to turn your sadness into happiness, how about that?”

What about bartender!Eddie who hosts a quiz night and develops an infatuation with one of the members of a team named ‘Scoops Troop’. He overhears the guy saying he wishes there’d be questions on something he actually knew like basketball.

ON GHOSTS AND DEMONS: Wei Wuxian's "demonic" cultivation?

There are a few big misconceptions I have repeatedly seen in English-speaking fandom about things that are fundamental to the story of MDZS. One of them is this—

Wei Wuxian is not a demonic cultivator.

To prove this, let's take a deep dive into the original Chinese text of MDZS.

(Adapted from my original gdoc posted on Twitter on May 27, 2022. All translations my own unless otherwise stated.)

Demon vs. ghost

Let's start from the very basics. In addition to orthodox cultivation using spiritual energy and a golden core, there are two other forms of cultivation that are mentioned in the novel:

魔道 (mó dào), or “demon cultivation/path.”

鬼道 (guǐ dào), or “ghost cultivation/path.”

To be clear, 魔 mo "demons" and 鬼 gui "ghosts" (and thus their respective cultivation/paths) are not interchangeable because of the in-universe worldbuilding within MDZS. Using the characters in the term 妖魔鬼怪 "monsters," MXTX created four distinct categories of beings, each of which has a strict definition in the novel. From chapter 4 (jjwxc ch 13):

妖者非人之活物所化; 魔者生人所化; 鬼者死者所化; 怪者非人之死物所化。 Yāo (妖) are transformed from non-human living beings; mó (魔) are transformed from living people; guǐ (鬼) are transformed from the deceased; guài (怪) are transformed from non-human dead beings.

And of course, WWX hoards all the ghost-type pokemon monsters at the Phoenix Mountain tournament, and he only exerts control over corpses, spirits, and the like (aka people who have already died). (As opposed to Xue Yang, who appears to have been actively trying to make 魔 "demons" out of living people with those "living corpses" of his, perhaps.) (And, ironically, in order to avoid showing necromancy / zombies on screen, CQL technically does show WWX practicing demon cultivation because everyone is "supposedly alive" even when they're corpses? Which is, funnily enough, far worse morally in the MDZS universe, lol.)

So, intuitively at least, we know that WWX must be practicing ghost cultivation—now let's look at some concrete examples from the book.

Running the numbers

1) 魔道 (mó dào) means “demon cultivation.” As such, it must use living humans.

魔道 appears one (1) time in the novel.

Yes, once. The only time it appears is in the term 魔道祖师 modao zushi, or the namesake of the novel, in chapter 2. This is a title the general public has given him through rumors:

魏无羡好歹也被人叫了这么多年无上邪尊啦、魔道祖师啦之类的称号，这种一看就知道不是什么好东西的阵法，他自然了如指掌。 Wei Wuxian wasn’t called titles like “The Evil Overlord,” “The Founder of Demon Cultivation,” and so on over the years by others for nothing—he knew these sorts of obviously shady formations like the back of his hand.

2) 鬼道 (guǐ dào) means “ghost cultivation.” As such, it must use dead humans.

鬼道 appears 12 times in the novel.

Here is the first instance that 鬼道 appears, which I believe is the first time Wei Wuxian's method of cultivation is properly introduced. From chapter 3 (jjwxc ch 8):

蓝忘机 […] 对魏无羡修鬼道一事极不认可。 Lan Wangji […] had never approved of the fact that Wei Wuxian practiced ghost cultivation.

Here's another quote from chapter 15 (jjwxc ch 71) for funsies:

蓝忘机看着他，似乎一眼就看出他只是随口敷衍，吸了一口气，道：“魏婴。” Lan Wangji looked at him as if he saw through his half-hearted bluff. He took in a breath, then said, “Wei Ying.” 他执拗地道：“鬼道损身，损心性。” He stubbornly continued, “Ghost cultivation harms one’s body, and harms one’s nature.”

3) 邪魔歪道 (xiemowaidao) means heretical path/immoral methods/evil practices/underhanded means/etc—e.g., lying, cheating, stealing, bribery, and so on.

It appears ~24 times in the novel.

I mention this last term because it is often used to refer to Wei Wuxian's cultivation, but as a pejorative. Every instance of 邪魔歪道 is said by or to quote someone looking down upon Wei Wuxian’s cultivation (Jin Zixun, Jin Ling, etc.) and referring to it derogatorily, whereas every instance of 鬼道 guidao/ghost dao is said by someone discussing it neutrally and/or factually (Lan Jingyi, Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian himself, random cultivators at discussion conferences, the narration, etc.). Here is a pertinent example with Jin Ling (derogatory) and Lan Jingyi (neutral) in chapter 9 (jjwxc ch 43):

金凌怒道：“是在谈论薛洋，我说的不对吗？薛洋干了什么？他是个禽兽不如的人渣，魏婴比他更让人恶心！什么叫‘不能一概而论’？这种邪魔歪道留在世上就是祸害，就是该统统都杀光，死光，灭绝！” “We are discussing Xue Yang,” Jin Ling said angrily. “Am I wrong? What did Xue Yang do? He’s scum that’s lower than a beast, and Wei Ying is even more disgusting than him! What do you mean ‘don’t make sweeping generalizations?’ As long as those practicing this kind of demoniac, heretical path are alive, they’ll continue to bring disaster. We should slaughter all of them, kill all of them, annihilate them once and for all!” 温宁动了动，魏无羡摆手示意他静止。只听蓝景仪也加入了，嚷道：“你发这么大火干什么？思追又没说魏无羡不该杀，他只是说修鬼道的也不一定全都是薛洋这种人，你有必要乱摔东西吗？那个我还没吃呢……” Wen Ning shuffled around. Wei Wuxian gestured at him to stay still, only to hear Lan Jingyi also cut in loudly, “Why are you getting so riled up? It’s not like Sizhui said Wei Wuxian shouldn’t have been killed. All he said was that people who practice ghost cultivation aren’t necessarily all like Xue Yang. Do you have to go around breaking things? I didn’t even get to eat any of that yet…”

Tl;dr—Wei Wuxian does not 修魔道 practice demon cultivation. When Wei Wuxian’s craft is discussed in a neutral and factual manner, it is referred to as 鬼道 ghost dao.

In fact, Wei Wuxian’s imitators are also referred to explicitly as 鬼道修士 ghost cultivators.

魏无羡早就听说过，这些年来江澄到处抓疑似夺舍重生的鬼道修士，把这些人通通押回莲花坞严刑拷打。 Wei Wuxian had heard a while back that over the past few years, Jiang Cheng had gone around snatching any ghost cultivator suspected of being possessed or reborn, detaining them in Lotus Pier to interrogate them using torture.

So why the confusion?

Of course, there is the matter of the novel's title, which I will get into in a second. But the real issue is a matter of translation.

The idea that WWX uses "demonic cultivation" is a misconception in English-speaking fandom due to issues with the translation of terminology. Of note, EXR actually did translate 鬼道 guidao as "ghostly path" most of the time, though there were at least 3 instances of "demonic" and 1 instance of "dark," especially regarding the first few.

However, this misconception was perpetuated (and arguably worsened) by 7S's official translation, which not only mistranslated additional terms as "demonic cultivation/path" (at least in book 1), but also consistently mistranslated every instance of 鬼道 as "demonic cultivation/path."

So why is this book called 魔道祖师, commonly translated as "Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation?"

One possibility is one posed in Chinese-language meta online, which often cites that WWX himself is a sort of 魔 demon. While this may be true—after all, he can hear the voices of the dead—it doesn't quite explain the fact that the title sets him up to be the 祖师 or "founder."

My take is that this novel is very much concerned with hearsay vs. truth. This is one of the many monikers WWX is given by the public, who collectively view him as evil. (Also of note is that the non-cultivator public is not aware of all the nuances that cultivators learn re: distinctions between the 妖魔鬼怪 monsters.) In the quote from earlier, note that the first title we're given is actually 无上邪尊 “The Evil Overlord,” then 魔道祖师 "The Founder of Demon Cultivation." Like, what can that be other than MXTX telling us, "please take both of these with a HUGE grain of salt, lol."

(And not only the title, but the very first line—"魏无羡死了。" / "Wei Wuxian is dead."—is a lie.)

I think the title is genius, honestly. It intentionally makes readers come into the novel with preconceived notions that Wei Wuxian practices 魔道 demon cultivation and evil techniques—just like the public in the novel. What better way to tell a story warning about the dangers of how easy it is to fall for misinformation and jump to incorrect conclusions?

(Though, in our case, perhaps it worked a little too well.)

I know a lot of people on qsmpblr use Tumblr mobile, but if you do use browser Tumblr then I would recommend the Simple Translate extension. Because Tumblr doesn't have built in translation like Twitter, there's less fans posting in their native language, instead most people just use English.

Simple Translate is an extension that allows you to translate text that you highlight into a target language. (It uses Google Translate API, but so does Twitter so the translation quality is pretty much the same).

Firefox Extension | Chrome Extension

When you highlight text in another language, a translate icon appears, when you click on it a panel containing the translation of the text appears.

You can also change the settings of the extension so that the translation panel automatically appears when you highlight text in another language.

Here's some more examples using the official QSMP Twitter accounts, you do not need to change the settings of the extension to translate from different languages into your target language.

(All of these match the translations given when using the "translate bio" button on Twitter directly.)

You can also access a translation box using the icon in the toolbar, any text you enter can be translated to the language selected in the drop-down menu (meaning you don't need to open a new tab to use Google Translate).

Some settings explanation and other stuff under the cut. Not super important but I figured I'd add it anyways.

There is an option to use DeepL API as opposed to Google Translate (it's another translation tool, there is free access to the API with a limit of 500,000 characters/month, and a pro version for unlimited access).

Whatever the target language is set as is what text you highlight will be translated into. There is another option for a second target language, I'll explain that further down.

This option changes how you view the translation panel, the first option (default) has the icon appear when you highlight text (as seen in the first image of the post), the second option has the translation panel appear automatically when you highlight text, and the for third option the panel and icon won't automatically appear, but can still be accessed by right-clicking the highlighted text and selecting "translate selected text".

The checkbox below these options means that if the text you're highlighting is already in your target language, the translation icon and panel will not appear, it can again still be accessed by right-clicking what you've highlighted and selecting translate.

This option appears twice, in both the Web-page section (for translating selected text) and the Toolbar Popup section (for the translation box in the toolbar popup).

The web page option, when toggled on, means that when you select text that is in your target language, the translation panel will translate into the second target language that has been selected. If the checkbox for "do not display if translation is not required" is toggled on, you can only view the translation from Target -> 2nd Target by right-clicking to translate selected text.

The toolbar popup version of this option is used to automatically switch the language in the toolbar translation box when you input something in your main target. (ie. second target set to French means that when you input English text in the translation box it will switch the translation setting from "(detect language) -> English" to "English -> French").

There are also settings to change the style and size of the translation button and panel.

Side note: Mixed language messages (not containing your target language) will only translate one of the languages, you can work around this by highlighting the different languages separately.
