cracks my knuckles so hard i break my hands; ohh beloved mary i've been sitting on a mountain of bitterness since i first picked up hollow knight in 2020, & i'm sure i've said a couple of these things on main before but i'm laying them out again Right Now

the hollow knight fandom is fucking HORRIBLE about godseeker & i will never not be upset about it;

for being the gateway manifest to the game's infamous boss rush DLC that feeds us a little extra lore, leads to the ending most favor & introduces THE SHADE LORD - everyone's FAVORITE manifestation of the void & evolution of the protagonist... she is so painfully overlooked,

& if she's not painfully overlooked, she is disgustingly sexualized; her glorification of abuse by the hands of a god bastardized & taken to paint her as a pervert ( WHICH IS ESPECIALLY ABHORRENT if you stand with the idea that the protagonist is likely Not an Adult & the shade lord is undoubtedly The Protagonist ), her role twisted & simplified to be the shade lord's / the knight's bitch or wife or someone it needs to avoid because she's some kind of predator;

& if she's not sexualized or used as ship fodder, then she is treated as a horrible BITCH who deserves her death & every bit OF abuse one can fling at her because she dared not be nice to The Protagonist - nevermind that plenty of other characters can do the same or straight up KILL THEM & they're seen as fandom favorites ( see; Tiso, The Pale King, Hornet, fucking Everyone in the game ) & nevermind the fact that The Protag also invaded her mind without permission & started fucking around ( not that i'm saying it deserves to be bashed for it but you know. it did walk into the ass kicking arena (( the godseeker / knight dynamic isn't a fault of anyone's, it's just a lot of ' you did this so now this happens ' )) )

& i'm so. sick. can we take off our jackass glasses for 5 seconds & look at her critically, i'm begging you. hollow knight fandom. i'm going to strangle someone

godseeker is a FASCINATING character, right up there with all the higher beings themselves; godseeker is a character that hails from a far off land, presumably forsaken by the gods of it to the point that it stands in perpetual ruin, having toiled & crawled her way to hallownest in search of the pale king's divine light only to be met with a KINGDOM of powerful gods. only to be MYSTERIOUSLY locked up before being able to attune until you, as the protagonist, free her. & that pretty much unleashes a domino effect that has a severe impact on what remains of the kingdom, that has a severe impact on EVERYONE'S fate including her own, depending on what you do.

you can choose to take on the remnants of the kingdom's gods, slay the one causing the plague that took them all out, & in your escape from her mind, punish & kill the one who perpetuated their legends, & EVEN end up in purgatory with her, where now YOU are the god of gods, at the cost of your freedom as well as her's - to live in glory forevermore.

but oh no, she's the whore bitch who was a little mean to you & wants daddy god to punish her.

When it comes to historical research, do you research for things that DON'T exist? For example, foods that are common now but didn't exist in the average American restaurant or grocery in the '80s or '90's? Words, phrases, and entire concepts that are commonly accepted today but unheard of to the average American when Mav and Ice were at Top Gun?

Your writing is so unbelievably good.

not really because I don't care about food, I care about the literary device that is "taking communion." i.e. it doesn't matter what they eat, it only matters that they're eating together, for the plot.

And, okay, showing my little-kid bias, but was there actually stuff in grocery stores in the 80s/90s that wouldn't be there today/vice versa? brands might change, like okay Pringles might not exist but you still have potato chips; and obviously specialty stuff like what you find in your average Asian market might not be commonplace, but, like, were the 90s all that different from today, American-food-wise? its my assumption that they weren't, but I also wasn't alive in the 90s, so. Um, ectocooler Hi-C, maybe? that's the one 90s food I know.

attitudes of course are what change. today's concept of being so QUICK to publicly label sexual identities would be extremely foreign, for instance. obviously people did label their sexualities in the 80s & 90s, people were definitely calling themselves bisexual and such, but probably not the people ice & mav would be hanging out with, in the Reagan-era navy. which is what my fics are about. that's the whole point.

and, also, COMMUNICATION changes. I have never used a payphone in my whole life so I actually have no idea how they work. but they were ubiquitous "back then," and lend themselves to amazingly interesting conflict (omg I don't have enough change to call my boyfriend maverick who's mad at me!!!) which is why I lean on payphones so much in my writing. honestly, im gonna be real, the invention of the cell phone makes telling stories about miscommunication so much harder. instant-speed communication would make certain stories less interesting, which is why a lot of horror movies default to the "no cell service" trope to isolate their characters, or why some teen dramas have the characters reject cell phones on principle (Alyssa or James having a phone in 2017's "The End of the F***ing World" would solve most of their problems, which is why Alyssa smashes hers in the first five minutes and James basically says he views them as a cancer to society--if they had phones the story would be boring, so the writers took away their phones).

I also feel like people used to treat society differently "back then," i.e. Going Out was much more of a thing when there were 10 channels on TV and no one had cell phones, so you Went Out and had drinks & met strangers & interacted with general society to an extent im not sure we do anymore. So that experience is way more fun to write about in the 80s than today. (u can't see me but im seething with jealousy over ppl who were born in ~1965)

idk. im not sure I did a great job reproducing the zeitgeist of the 80s/90s in my fics, bc I wasn't there to have knowledge of what they were like. I got most of my presupposed knowledge about that time period from reading Calvin & Hobbes anthologies as a kid. oh well.

tbh the very first 'mens' vest to ever be tailored to a 'woman' by disneyland's costuming department being a thing in my closet with my name sewn inside it is a very cool feeling... i fought hard for that

#a few years before they had started to tailor vests to trans men who got their gender marker legally changed but Only if legally changed #but i was forced to wear a skirt for years and years bc im 'just' butch #i didnt talk abt it much so as to not doxx myself but now that im gone from that hell hole anyway.. #back in sep 2020 they finally decided to take a small step toward treating human beings as diverse individuals #by dropping all if their sex-based uniform policies as well as allowing us to have visible tattoos* and piercings* #*within certain size limits and placement constraints that were still not remotely inclusive of many cultures #and this also freed us to wear mens or womens costume pieces the problem being #the smallest vest they carry is a size 30 broad shoulders and im a twinky little 26 #but that shouldnt be an issue because for ages theyve always custom tailored costume pieces to people with specific needs #including plenty of men who were too big or small for the stock size run of 30-56 #but they did not want to make one for me #and refused until they were threatened with being fired #which took 2 month of me fighting with multiple departments' managers and struggling to get hr and the union to work with me #i had one manager who was very excited for me and really had my back bless her specifically but everyone else can choke #and then i got bullied out of the fantasyland area within 4 months of that and never wore my vest again :) #and the adventurland costume was just a baggy button up so i didnt need anything custom fit there #but i never returned that vest they literally wouldve incinerated it once i quit
