We Are No Strangers to Human Suffering, but We’ve Seen Nothing Like the Siege of Gaza
Dec. 11, 2023 | Source: New York Times Op-ed
Tumblr media
By Michelle Nunn (CARE USA), Tjada D’Oyen McKenna (Mercy Corps), Jan Egeland (Norwegian Refugee Council), Abby Maxman (Oxfam America), Jeremy Konyndyk (Refugees International), and Janti Soeripto (Save the Children U.S.)
We are no strangers to human suffering — to conflict, to natural disasters, to some of the world’s largest and gravest catastrophes. We were there when fighting erupted in Khartoum, Sudan. As bombs rained down on Ukraine. When earthquakes leveled southern Turkey and northern Syria. As the Horn of Africa faced its worst drought in years. The list goes on.
But as the leaders of some of the world’s largest global humanitarian organizations, we have seen nothing like the siege of Gaza. In the more than two months since the horrifying attack on Israel that killed more than 1,200 people and resulted in some 240 abductions, about 18,000 Gazans — including more than 7,500 children — have been killed, according to the Gazan health ministry. More children have been reported killed in this conflict than in all major global conflicts combined last year.
The atrocities committed by Hamas on Oct. 7 were unconscionable and depraved, and the taking and holding of hostages is abhorrent. The calls for their release are urgent and justified. But the right to self-defense does not and cannot require unleashing this humanitarian nightmare on millions of civilians. It is not a path to accountability, healing or peace. In no other war we can think of in this century have civilians been so trapped, without any avenue or option to escape to save themselves and their children.
Tumblr media
Most of our organizations have been operating in Gaza for decades. But we can do nothing remotely adequate to address the level of suffering there without an immediate and complete cease-fire and an end to the siege. The aerial bombardments have rendered our jobs impossible. The withholding of water, fuel, food and other basic goods has created an enormous scale of need that aid alone cannot offset.
Global leaders — and especially the United States government — must understand that we cannot save lives under these conditions. A significant change in approach from the U.S. government is needed today to pull Gaza back from this abyss.
For a start, the Biden administration must stop its diplomatic interference at the United Nations, blocking calls for a cease-fire.
Since the pause in fighting ended, we are again witnessing an exceptionally high level of bombardment, and at increasing ferocity. The few areas left in Gaza that are untouched by bombardment are shrinking by the hour, forcing more and more civilians to seek safety that does not exist. Over 80 percent of 2.3 million Gazans are now displaced. The newest Israeli offensive is now forcing them to cluster on a tiny sliver of land.
The bombardment is not the only thing brutally cutting lives short. The siege of — and blockades surrounding — Gaza have led to a critical food scarcity, cutoffs of medical supplies and electricity, and a lack of clean water. There is barely any medical care to be found in the enclave and few medications. Surgeons are working by the light of their mobile phones, without anesthetics. They are using dishcloths as bandages. The risk of waves of waterborne and infectious disease will only grow in the increasingly overcrowded living conditions of the displaced.
One of our colleagues in Gaza recently described their struggle to feed an orphaned infant who had been rescued from the rubble of an airstrike. The baby had not eaten for days after her mother’s death. Colleagues could only scrounge up powdered milk — not formula, not breast milk, and not a nutritionally suitable infant food — to help stave off her starvation.
Before the war, hundreds of truckloads of aid were needed each day to support Gazans’ daily existence. Only a trickle of that required aid has made it into Gaza in the two months since the war began. But even if more were allowed in, our work in Gaza is dependent on ensuring our teams can move safely to set up warehouses, shelters, health clinics, schools, and water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure.
Today our staff members are not safe. They tell us they’re making the daily choice of staying with their families in one place so that they can die together or go out to seek water and food.
Among leaders in Washington, there is constant talk about preparing for the “day after.” But if this relentless bombardment and siege continue, there will be no “day after” for Gaza. It will be too late. Hundreds of thousands of lives hang in the balance today.
So far, American diplomacy in this war has not delivered on the goals President Biden has conveyed: protection of innocent civilians, adherence to humanitarian law, more aid delivery. To stop Gaza’s apocalyptic free fall, the Biden administration must take tangible measures, as it does in other conflicts, to up the ante with all parties to the conflict and bordering countries.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken once said of the war in Ukraine that the targeting of heat, water and electricity was a “brutalization of Ukraine’s people” and “barbaric.” The Biden administration should acknowledge that the same holds true in Gaza. While it has announced measures to deter violence against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank, Mr. Blinken and his colleagues should apply similar pressure to stop violence against civilians in Gaza, too.
The harrowing events unfolding before us are shaping a global narrative that, if unchanged, will reveal a legacy of indifference in the face of unspeakable suffering, bias in the application of the laws of conflict and impunity for actors that violate international humanitarian law.
The U.S. government must act now — and fight for humanity.
Ms. Nunn is the president and chief executive of CARE USA. Ms. McKenna is the chief executive of Mercy Corps. Mr. Egeland is the secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council. Ms. Maxman is the president and chief executive of Oxfam America. Mr. Konyndyk is the president of Refugees International. Ms. Soeripto is the president and chief executive of Save the Children U.S.

BGM: 佐野元春: 誰かが君のドアを叩いている
Today, during the work, I wanted to pray quietly at 2:46 but forgot it. It was 12 years ago... as I always write, I have no memory about Great East Japan Earthquake. These days. I was always bullied by my bosses, and also I had no pleasant moment/event in my private life so I was just soaked into alcohol. Every day, with a drunken mind, "there would be no more good event  in my life" so "I want to complete this life", I said these to myself. If I got a days off, I drank alcohol from morning to evening... so whatever happened in this would shouldn't be related with my life. That was a real feeling of mine. Probably, even if aliens tried to invade this earth, or even if this world had to end finally, I at that time would say "so what?" and try to drink more. Yes, it was a terrible incident in our country, but I was such an easy-going person (I use this word "easy-going" intentionally).
A Japanese folk singer, Yosui Inoue sings a young person who died in vain, and it should be more important for him not to have an umbrella than that sad news. It's brilliant in my opinion. Me, I sometimes think that how the connection between "a national incident" and "my tiny life" should be. I never want to "criticize" any situation or incident from the (virtual) higher stage. Because I am not a pro critic or commentator so it would be a kind of shameful or uncool stance I guess. And the firm basis of my life would bring me a better life or enable me to look everything far from here. So all I need to do is just making that basis. So I wanted to write about everything from "tiny" and "imperfect" myself, such as the assassination of Shinzo Abe, an ex-prime minister, and the earthquake of Turkey. Of course, it is different from the trial of thinking like that and the fact if I can do so.
As I always write, when I was drank and spending my days in vain, I just tweeted on Twitter (even during all days). Without reading any book, doing any creative and interesting thing... I can't remember that but probably, I just blamed someone else like "why Japanese politicians are so stupid?", "I am living in a miserable life because I am just a member of ''lost generation". Now, I rarely join in Twitter. I admit that Twitter has a great possibility to change this world if we use it smartly, but at least, I won't "rely on" it. Following Haruki Murakami, I shouldn't rely on social media and spend my precious time with it because it sometimes hurts me as anonymous blaming. I want to spend my time with Shunsuke Tsurumi and Haruki Murakami, and enjoy slow pleasant time with hip hop and rare groove music.
However, I couldn't read any book today. I spent my time with Nirvana's "Unplugged" as usual. I read the dialogue between Shunsuke Tsurumi and Genpei Akasegawa and the concept of "Roujin Ryoku (the power of getting old)" (this is an ironical concept that says getting older would give you various power. Forgetting bad things or losing any wasteful power, etc). I am already 48. I have to face that I often forget my id number of my office or other people's name. I am certainly getting older. Ah, what a life. I am soaked into poverty without any romance or dream. Oh my gosh. But I want to admit that I also got a certain, simple happiness from that bottom of life. I can be connected with the "danshu" meeting, make friends from the meeting about autism, and also I ma having many friends who also learn languages on MeWe and Discord. In a way, I am already a happy person. I really appreciate that fact simply.

Saturday Rant… Satan Worship and Earthquakes
Tumblr media
In what would have to be considered the most obvious display of blatant sacrilege, the 2023 Grammy Awards featured worshipping Satan as their showpiece. And, true to form, the Hollyweird crowd loved it.       It’s hard to imagine this actually took place. But it’s a reflection of the depravity that comes from the entertainment industry.   And in other news, Turkey and Syria are still reeling from a devastating earthquake that has killed more than 17,000 people. And while we find nothing funny about the earthquake, we find it quite interesting/coincidental? that this earthquake happened right after Turkey’s President Erdogan slammed the door shut about admitting Sweden and Finland into NATO.   READ:  Turkey Kills NATO Talks With Sweden  January 26, 2023     We’re not saying that someone purposely caused an earthquake in Turkey. But…and this is a Very VERY BIG BUTT…   In 1897, Nicola Tesla invented an “Earthquake Machine” that somehow magically disappeared after his death. Conspiracy theories aside, if the technology was available back then, it’s most likely been improved today…as in HAARP Technology.       Needless to say there’s a lot of rants about these two subjects. As a result, we’ll turn today’s rant over to two familiar contributors to the Saturday Rant… ‘Scoob Martin’ and ‘Pretty in Pink.’ So, take it away PiP.   Satan Worship After seeing what took place at the 2023 Grammy’s all I can say is, if we’re not living in the end times, then we’re pretty damn close. Satanists openly mocking the world is becoming soooo obvious that you have to be totally blind or completely soulless not to be affected by it. And maybe I’m reaching here but the fact that the Grammy’s was sponsored by PFIZER, says that they’re in on the Satanism as well. I wonder if their imagery of RED RED RED has anything to do with Blood Clots? The entire event was beyond disgusting to the point of extreme blasphemy and mockery towards God. All I can say to these people is: Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. ~ Galatians 6:7 ~ *************************************************** ***************************************************   And take it away, Scoob. Once again, James I agree with you that a massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria right after Turkey killed Sweden’s chance to get into NATO was not a coincidence. And that HAARP was involved. If you look it up, HAARP stands for High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program. And it’s supposedly a scientific endeavor aimed at studying the properties and behavior of the ionosphere. But what the Wikipedia’s and Google’s of the world won’t tell you is how HAARP technology can also be used to create earthquakes. And in the case of Turkey and Syria…Hashtag #Duuuuuhh! The West NEEDS Sweden and Finland in NATO as pawns in the Game of WW3 against Russia. So, after Turkey nixed that happening, a message was sent to Turkey via a massive earthquake killing thousands of innocent citizens. These people are just plain evil, James. And they only care about power and control which, ultimately, will lead to their demise. I only hope it comes sooner than later. God bless those people in Turkey and Syria. **************************************************** **************************************************** Wow! Thanks, Scoob and PiP. Your rants are appreciated by us and our readers. As always, if you – our Dear Readers – have a rant you’d like to share then please send it to us. You never know whose life will be affected by it. And if you want to see some NSFW rants then go (HERE).   Remember:  We’re Not Just About Finance. But we use finance to give you hope. ********************************* Invest with confidence. BGM: SBK - Tokyo LV
I had gotten two days off, today and tomorrow so went back to my parent's house in the next town. This morning I went to the library to borrow a book and went to Aeon. A friend of mine on Facebook said that she had done a donation to Turkey which had suffered from a big earthquake. I followed her and did a tiny donation there. A lot of people had passed away... that news made my mind depressed, and I thought that I had experienced (or watched) two big earthquakes in Japan (in 1995 and 2003). What can I do through those earthquakes? The scenery I saw at Aeon was quite peaceful and it let me think how precious our life's peace is. Of course, it has been made from great efforts by the people who treat our useful daily life steadily. And I want to say that is because every people does our best in our fields.
This afternoon I arrived at my home and had lunch with my parents. I took a nap and tried to read Kenichiro Mogi or Shinsuke Shimojo's books in my room, but they didn't come into my head. It would be that the environment or situation changed, so I spent my afternoon time with A Tribe Called Quest in a relaxed mood. The books on my bookshelf attracted my mind. They were the ones I had bought, and one of them was Meisei Goto's "In The Wall". I salvaged this book because I had found this on the bookshelf for 100 yen, and thought that "Reading Meisei Goto's books must not be a waste of time" even if I had not known this book's value. From this troublesome season, I want to face this really thick book as a brick. Besides that, I noticed my young days' passion again because of the books by Shinji Miyadai, that I had read really seriously. It made me smile. Once I had done my efforts hard to live this complicated life.
The evening I read Shinsuke Shimojo's book "Subliminal Impact" I had read this afternoon, but it still didn't come into my mind easily. Shimojo discusses his clear thinking steadily from a lot of data of experiences and points out that the things we need to do or purchase are the products we have to choose from by the force of our society. But he doesn't say that it must be a scene of dystopia. He doesn't praise that and just says that we have to look at that real state. I was impressed by his discussion and thought that I was just the person who chooses the books Amazon and bookmeter suggested. I treat them as the ones I chose by chance, but it is because the algorithm suggests "for me" from enormous data on the vast sea of the internet.
I met Haruki Murakami's "Norwegian Wood", and was moved by Fishmans's music, and also found a lot of ideas from Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Hirokazu Koreeda's movies. The fact that I have met a lot of important things as I wrote above, and also the fact that I have met many, quite many friends I am connecting with (the "danshu" meeting, the meeting about autism, and the English conversation class, etc). Then, what is this brain which has been attracted by them? I also can say that every day I meet various things like those I wrote above, and also pass them usually. I might be able to say that I would meet Haruki Murakami and Fishmans one day, so I shouldn't think too seriously. Like Hideo Kobayashi, a Japanese legendary intellectual would meet Arthur Rimbaud one day. But even though I immerse myself in that kind of cynical way of thinking, I have to think about how the chances or accidents in my life would work. The element of luck... Kankichi Ryotsu, a popular Japanese wild policeman in a cartoon says that our life totally depends on luck. I don't think that, but I can say that I am a lucky guy because of my past life.
