OK so, I did a bit of experimenting and here’s what I’ve been able to gather re: the new Tumblr video player:
It doesn’t work on blogs, just on your dashboard.
I haven’t come across any NSFW content when I turned the NSFW toggle off. But I suspect this only works if the post has been marked as Mature by the original poster.
It DOES show you related videos, usually from the tags added to it. I scrolled a bit through a video of Elvira and got random stuff from the Elvira tag, the horror tag and the 80s tag. A TikTok of a fish showed me more animal videos and random videos from TikTok.
If there aren’t enough videos in the tags added to the original post, it’ll start showing you GIFs. This doesn’t look very good if the GIF is supposed to be tiny.
If the post hasn’t been tagged at all (or if OP has deactivated, it seems) it seemingly starts showing you videos / GIFs from tags that you’re following or something completely random, which is how I got that sissy fetish video from a video of a talk show interview, I guess. Swiping further on the same video showed me similarly unrelated videos and content from the Osomatsu-san tag, which I’m following.
I could experiment more and I genuinely want to because I’m curious but I can’t rn because I have to attend Zoom therapy, so that’s it for now. Will update this post if I find out more noteworthy stuff.

There are a variety of reasons why I don't like the new media player. I don't like the scrolling tiktok-ification, I find the background colour and text distracting from the images and videos I'm trying to watch, I miss the pause button. But mostly, I hate how often I see this:
About a third of all videos I encounter now just glitch out. Going to people's blogs to view them doesn't fix it, so the only solution I've found is to copy the link into my mobile browser, banish all the suggestions that I download the app, and wouldn't I like to get a Tumblr account of my own and "oh btw we leave cookies tee-hee" to eventually watch the video in my browser.
Like I get it, you're trying new things, you want a fresh userbase, and you think that being identical to every other platform is the way to go (it isn't), but even considering that, do you think that maybe having a consistently *functional* media player might be something we can all enjoy?

there's no scrolling to the beginning and it doesn't auto play sound when i click on it so i'm just missing the first however many seconds and can't scroll back?????
at least it plays in the old player when you go to the person who put it on your dash but what the fuck???

By the way, @staff is changing the video player and photo viewer on the mobile app to the one from Tumblr TV. As a result, they have made the abhorrent decision to remove an important accessibility feature in order to TikTok-ifying Tumblr. You can no longer zoom in on photos. Or so I thought. Because the visually impaired are now second-class users to the Tumblr Staff, they just decided to make it harder to zoom in on photos.
So, for all of you who, like me, find the pinch-to-zoom feature on Tumblr invaluable to read and view photos, you now have to:
Tap the Photo > Tap the “more” button in the description > tap the photo again
This will open the old photo viewer (for now, anyway) which was formerly one tap away. It will grant you all the former features of the old photo viewer, including the ability to zoom in.
EDIT: if you’re seeing this on your For You Dash or some other non-reblogged method you will see this edit. Before reblogging and commenting on this, there is addition information in the replies. I have replies disabled, so I am the only person who can add them. I’ve added addition info, as well as an update. Please read them. TLDR: many others, and myself, are now seeing it’s fixed. Many others are not. It may be a roll-out fix from the back-end. Be patient and wait to see if it’ll make its way to you.

So EA/Bioware were retweeting all the negative comments towards Larian,huh
Can't say I'm not surprised by that. A lot of the ones doing so are pretty big names that could definitely improve their games and yet they wanna complain as if fans are expecting 'too much' from them. Like we should just accept getting half baked games all the time...really showing their arses, aren't they.😅
I think what these devs don't comprehend and why they are panicking is because they think everyone wants them to do all the same things when x game becomes popular. And they know they will fail because it happens Every Single Time.
You can't copy paste someone's work and think that it will be revolutionary. It's the same thing that happened when skyrim had huge open world then they all did that. But they do this to themselves!!! They want constant big successes without creativity. Now they whine in advance saying they can't do this. Good. Nobody wants the same game but worse released 500 times.
It reveals their way of thinking, they do the "copy homework" thing because they think it's expected of them. This is what they mean by the "new standard". Their brains immediately leapt to "we now need to replicate everything about the style and scope of this game."
NO. That is not the standard. If only they embraced their own style and leaned into their own strengths and listened to feedback.
Bioware's stupidity in particular is truly incredible. because they achieved this at one point, they were a success story with Baldur's Gate. Then they went on to make games that people still consider some of the greatest rpgs of all time, they "set the standard". But then they refused to listen.
Because every company tries to appeal to the masses, they try to entice the playerbase of different games. But actually they just lose their own players. Oh by the way, dear tumblr staff... does this remind you of someone?
