Bird Rants: Portals and Stuff
In the Supergirl show, the transmatter portal is described as working via polyatomic anions. No, just no, that's nonsensical. It sounds like gibberish, and it bothers me to no end. There's a better way to describe how it works that's way more fun.
So hear me out, okay? I got a physics degree, and I did a bit on research on how such a portal could work based on how the show describes it. (disclaimer: I simplified things a little bit for this explanation).
First: the show claims the portals are set up via locations. As in the person had to visit both locations to "program" that location into it.
Second: it looks like the opening of a wormhole.
This leads me to believe the portals actually work via quantum entanglement and wormholes that utilize negative energy. So, particles on a quantum level are weird. They tend to exist in all states at once until measured, but at the moment of our measurement, the particle collapses into a specific state. This is the foundation of a lot of quantum mechanics and many of the weirdness such as entanglement. Another important property is the uncertainty principle, where we can't measure all properties exactly. For example, if we measure the velocity of the particle, the location measurement will be smeared out and inexact. And vice versa. (Seriously, quantum world is weird, and I absolutely love it).
Uncertainty principle is the basics of vacuum energy within spacetime (a.k.a. space). It plays a big role in stabilizing a wormhole for travel.
Now, this smearing out of the particles allows for some weird shit like entanglement!
Meaning, we can entangle particles so that they are basically married/connected. For example, if one entangled particle has an Up Spin, then its buddy will always be the opposite - Down Spin. (Fun side note, the distance between them doesn't matter. It's a nonlocal connection. if we measure the one particle as up, the other - even if its thousands of lightyears away - will always be the opposite).
Knowing that, we can look at the portals. Per the first claim, two locations are programed into the portal device. That likely means the locations are entangled on a particle level. So how to pass through to the other location? Create a miniature wormhole and use energy to expand it into a person-sized portal. The entangled particles at both end would hold the ends of the wormhole in place, but in order to stabilize the wormhole for travel, the device must provide enough negative energy to allow passage. (See my side notes below as to what negative energy is).
The type of particles doesn't matter (all matter is made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons anyway. And protons and neutrons are made up of quarks). Therefore, it also does not matter what the molecule is (for example, polyatomic ions are two or more atoms in a covalent bond that act as one unit. That describes most matter actually. But even single atoms would work). This is because quantum entanglement doesn't happen on the atom level but the particle level. As in the ingredients for an atom.
Therefore, transmatter portals in Supergirl actually work via quantum entanglement and wormholes, which are stabilized using negative energy. Important side notes:
Wormholes were predicted by Einstein's general relativity theory. They connect two points in spacetime (but can also connect two separate universes for those that theorize the existence of the multiverse). Wormholes can form on a quantum level -- for example the particle accelerator CERN in Switzerland has detected miniature black holes that last a few microseconds before vanishing. Wormholes can last about as long. However in order to get wormholes to the size of a human being, a LOT of energy would be needed. Kip Thorne, a physicist, calculated out a way to artificially create one, and one method involves the making a microscopic wormhole. Then utilize negative energy to expand that and hold it open. What is negative energy though?
This is the fun part. Spacetime has been theorized (and some testing has proved this) to be a curved surface full of a frothing sea of particles that pop in and out of existence (as in matter and antimatter particles colliding to annihilate one another). This is called vacuum energy.
Now, this is where quantum mechanics comes into play! Quantum field theory through the Casimir effect could essentially create a region of negative energy. That negative energy could in turn be harnessed to hold open a wormhole as postulated by several physicists such as Stephen Hawking, Kip Thorne, and Brian Greene. Having said that, what is Casimir effect then?
That one deals with the vacuum energy I just described above and how it interacts with materials in a confined space. The materials (commonly electrical conductors and dielectrics) alter the vacuum energy fields, which in turn creates a force between the materials.
...
Yes, I spent way too much time coming up with a more plausible theory on how these portals work. Uh, you're welcome.

Febuwhump - Soft Words
Fandom: Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003
Raph has a lot of questions about their guest. Since stewing on them in his own head isn’t doing any good he is, once again, recounting them to Leo.
“Are you absolutely sure he isn’t a Mikey?”
“Look, he says his name’s Leo. He’s wearing a blue mask. What more do you want?” Leo answers.
“Maybe for him not to be doing that?”
Raph gestures to where Mikey and ‘Leo’ are fighting over Mikey’s rocket powered hoverboard, ‘Leo’ licking Mikey’s hand where it’s flat over his face trying to push him off. This isn’t working because ‘Leo’ has all four limbs wrapped around the hoverboard. Mikey shrugs, puts one foot on ‘Leo’s’ shell and starts the hoverboard. It nearly crashes into Donnie’s workplace, rockets over Master Splinter’s head and finally tips upside-down from the weight depositing both turtles in the pool. They help each other climb out.
Leo shrugs. “He’s from a very different dimension?” he tries. “At least he’s not an evil duplicate.”
“Yeah, just a silly one.”
Leo grins and doesn’t deny it.
Raph returns to his second question. “And why is he my problem?”
“No one forced you to let him share your bedroom,” Leo says.
‘Leo’ comes up behind Raph and throws an arm over his shell. “Hey, Raphala, talking about me?”
“Yeah, I was wondering why I put up with you,” Raph grumbles, and it really is like talking to Mikey because ‘Leo’ just leans on him harder.
“My natural charm,” he chirps, flicking his mask tails.
“Yeah, right,” Raph says. “You finished terrorising the lair for today?”
Mikey thows his arm around Raph’s other side and says, “Never,” before sharing a high-three with ‘Leo’ over Raph’s head.
Donnie looks up and calls, “New Leo?”
‘Leo’ tenses up slightly and doesn’t stop leaning on Raph. “Hey, Donnie,” he calls. “You got an idea of how to return me to sender yet?”
“I might,” Donnie says. He holds up one of the two swords he was examining. “These have a similar signature to the transmatter device. I’ve put together an amplifier based on what I was able to glean from that.”
“Cool, cool, so you’re saying you turn your ampifier on and I just have to open a portal?” ‘Leo’ says, bounding over to inspect his swords. They’re wired up to what looks concerningly like a loudspeaker. “And that will boost me up to eleven?”
“Well, hopefully,” Donnie says. “Here.” He hands the swords to ‘Leo’, who takes them easily into his hands like they’re a part of him. That, at least, is familiar.
“We’re rooting for you, dude,” Mikey says.
‘Leo’ flashes him a grin. “Watch the master at work.”
It is really cool to watch ‘Leo’s’ sword cut a hole in reality. He’s used it to show off or steal snacks from Mikey multiple times, whenever Donnie doesn’t have the swords for study, and it’s still unfortunately cool. This time, though, ‘Leo’s’ face falls and the portal fizzles out before it’s formed.
“That wasn’t it, wasn’t far enough,” he mutters. He shakes his swords like he thinks they might have a connection loose. “Come on, come on, home, Raph, Donnie, Mikey, Dad, April. Come on.”
The next portal barely gets to more than a sliver of blue even as the amplifier starts to glow. Leo shakes his swords again, viciously.
“Don’t shake them,” Donnie says. “You’re going to break something in the amplifier.”
“I think I know how to make portals,” ‘Leo’ snaps. His next slash is wild, almost like he’s attacking the air in front of him, teeth bared in a snarl. “Just. Make. A. Portal.”
The last slash lights the whole lair up blue. For a moment Raph thinks it’s going to work, that the jagged tear in reality might hold, and then the amplifier makes a small popping sound and goes dull. After that the light fades from ‘Leo’s’ swords and lastly from his markings.
He drops the swords and takes two steps towards the wall, leaning his arm on it and pressing his face against that. Hiding from the concerned gazes of the turtles watching.
“Why am I so useless?” he says. “I’ve failed.”
The pose. The words. Suddenly Raph finds himself thinking, oh, this is Leo. He pictures Leo in space, thinking they’d lost Professor Honeycutt and their one chance to get home, saying they’d failed themselves and failed Master Splinter, the way he’d stood like this.
Raph does what he did then and walks over to put a hand on ‘Leo’s’ shell. “Hey, it’s not over yet. You can try again.”
“But it’s been so long already,” ‘Leo’ says. “I have to get back before Mikey does something stupid.”
“Yeah, well if he’s anything like our Mikey…”
“Not that kind of stupid! He can do portals too, but they… if he actually reaches me here he’s going to die. And I’ve just been playing around, trying not to think about it, because there’s nothing I can do except rely on Donnie.”
Raph looks back over his shoulder to Leo, hoping for some kind of help, but Leo’s just staring at his counterpart like it hurts to see this reflection of himself at his lowest.
“Me ’n’ Donnie are still there,” Raph tries. “We wouldn’t let Mikey kill himself.”
“Yeah, Raph’ll take care of him,” ‘Leo’ says. Then, just when Raph’s expecting him to relax and move on, find something practical to focus on, he throws his arms around Raph’s neck and buries his head against the top of Raph’s. Raph sighs and hugs him back. He feels so thin compared to Raph’s brothers, all long limbs and streamlined shell. “Thanks, big brother,” ‘Leo’ whispers. And only then does he turn away to pick up the swords, shaky smile back on his face.
“What were the readings like, Donnie?” he asks. “Did we get close?”
“Close enough I think we’re on the right lines,” Donnie says, taking the swords back. “I’ll have a new amplifier ready as soon as possible.”
Raph looks over at his own Leo, gaze fixed on the floor, and goes over to pat him on the shell too. “He’s not so bad,” he says. ”Guess he’s you after all.”

Why would you finally let them kiss right before Lena sacrifices herself. OMG
Because that's hands down the best time to kiss. But for a slightly more serious answer, I didn't plan out the kiss ahead of time, I don't plan ahead too much when I write. The characters are like little wind-up toys and I set them loose and see where they go. For that moment though, it felt right to have Lena be the one to initiate their first kiss after Kara's been the one pursuing Lena in her own way for the entirety of the story. It's something she thinks of as selfish even if it's not. Having Lena use the transmatter portal tech in her suit wasn't something I originally thought of, but once I did I liked how emotionally charged so many moments between her and Kara were when Lena used them. Obviously Lena leaving the Fortress after trapping Kara there in the lead up to the actual fic. Then there was the moment where Kara reveals to Lena she knows she's the vigilante and she flees to Themyscira. Her sending Kara by portal was kind of the opposite and I really liked having that moment where Kara understands what Lena is planning to do/did before she's forced apart again. Really fun to write. That was a very longwinded answer to your question, I know, but thanks for asking!

Feeling the weight of the sun (Here we come, blue and green)
[DEBS SUPERCORP AU]
Chapter 5: The In-Between
Getting away from Lord Tech Labs wasn't a difficult task, there was a reason no one had been able to catch her. Lena had perfected her transmatter portal, now a transmatter portal watch. (There are still problems with it, mostly with distance but it was a success in her book). They had left Kara’s necktie, a note, and kryptonite; a perfectly staged kidnapping, plausible deniability and what not. She’d taken Kara’s wrist after activating the portal back to their hideout, and had dragged her forward, into her territory.
“No nausea this time, right?” She asks Kara, who simply nods, taking in their surroundings. There were a few people flitting around, mostly her security team. Close to his work station, with a massive computer and several monitors, was Brainy, who did a clear double take at seeing her arrive with Kara, but nodded his hello anyways.
“Good to see you again, Miss Danvers,” he said, adopting his pose, his hands forming a triangular shape, the tip of all his fingers touching each other, but said nothing else.

Of Course It Was You, It Was Always You…
Part 2
<< >
She quickly gathered everything, all of the equipment she could find. Lena hurried to get every part of her plan together before departing. She knew it wouldn’t be long before the Super Friends came looking for her…and Kara. Knowing full well what they’d find would be a far cry from an explainable mistake. She knew she only had one chance to get this right. The CEO wondered to herself if either of them would ever be the same again after this, but she brushed the thought aside, reminding herself that she couldn’t allow such thoughts to push their way into clouding her judgement.
“—I’m more than aware of how this seems, but I need you to trust me, I don’t have much time…” ‘trust’ she thought, letting her somber and sorrowful expression break through for a split second before retaining her composure. The bitterness underneath just barely evident. “I’m taking her back to my lab, there may still be a way to fix yet another of my family’s atrocities. I’m sure you’re expecting to meet me there, but there won’t be enough time. I don’t have much as it is. Please… I promise I’ll fix this!”
With that, the CEO finished her parting message, tears beginning to brim just at the edge of eyes threatening to fall before blinking them back. Opening the portal to her lab was one thing, but carrying the unconscious super through would prove to be another challenge entirely. With her brother’s transmatter portal watch, she quickly made haste to gently move the woman across the floor through the portal and into her lab, without a trace of their visit left behind. Gathering what was left of her A.I. putting it to the side, Lena quickly got to work setting up the Sun bed as best she could, making certain to incorporate as many spare lamps as she could find. Hoping and praying it would bring Kara back, she waited.
Slowly but excruciatingly the wait turned to seconds, then minutes, and finally hours. It would’ve taken days to come to her conclusion had she not been counting every second of every day. The woman lying before her unresponsive…comatose, and without a thought as to how to proceed, what more could she possibly do. Silently sitting next to the med table Lena slowly dropped her head to her arms resting against the side as the tears finally began to fall freely.
“Oh Kara, what have I done? Why couldn’t I just forgive you? This isn’t your fault…it’s mine.” She choked in a tear filled whisper barely even audible as her voice began to crack.
“Pathetic, to think you would actually cry over one of these—roaches?! Even after everything their kind have put this family through? Our family?! Despicable!” Came a voice from the corner of the room shrouded in darkness. It was sharp, harsh, and full of distain as the words spat out with hatred and disgust. A presence as dark and as sinister as the nature of evil and wickedness itself filled the room—who else but Lillian Luthor.
Clearly startled by her mother’s presence, in a state of shock Lena quickly stood as she turned to see Lillian sneering from the corner of the lab. “Mother?!” Lena gasped, her tear stained expression quickly turning into one of malice and loathing hostility. “I don’t care what you want or why you’re here, but you have no place in this building. I’d suggest you leave before I call security and have them escourt you out!”
The thought of such minuscule threats would almost be enough to make Lillian laugh…almost. The terribly wicked grin on her face quickly forming back into a sneer utterly indecipherable. Her daughter’s words hardly piercing the darkened shroud of depravity one might call a heart. Sticks and stones, she told herself, ignoring her daughter’s half-baked threats. “And what dear, would that accomplish?” Lillian responded despondent as ever to the obvious scene in front of her taking careful note of everthing around her.
“What?!” Lena questioned still hovering around the medical table, never once letting her guard down around the machinatious presence that was her mother.
“What exactly, would this little…‘endeavor’ of yours accomplish?” Lillian asked yet again, already knowing the answer her daughter would concoct. “You wouldn’t want the world or better yet those super imbeciles to learn that yet another Luthor was harboring their beloved Girl of Steel like a prisoner in a laboratory cell behind glass walls, would you?” Lillian continued to probe ever so innocently feigning ignorance.
Frozen Lena stood in front of the table, ready to cover the distance between Kara and the woman just across from her should she suspect her mother of trying anything. Lacking a response Lena remained where she was, protectively stationed in from of the super as if to shield Kara from her mother’s very gaze.
“I frankly don’t see how any of this is of your concern! How are you even here? When did you get out? How? Who?…Was it Lex?” Lena could barely stand her own words as she laced her voice with venom at the meer mention of her brother. The very thought of her brother’s deeds bringing back nothing but pain and frustration, a cocktail of complex emotions. The very mention of his name dying with a sharp sneer on her tongue.
“Now your brother may be a dear, but you and I both know I have my own connections, not that that’s why I’m here. A little birdie told me one might find you here, attempting to remedy a so called mistake of yours…hm?” Lillian bespoke as she vaguely gestured towards the literal alien in the room. She waited for Lena to gather a response, but quickly began again for the sake of saving time. “I really don’t know why you insist on helping their kind, when all they do is take up valuable space, resources, and jobs from so amny other fellow humans who can’t even make a living for themselves.”
“Oh spare me the speech or better yet, cry me a river. We both know the real reason humans suffer is because of their so-called fellow man enacting their own selfish agendas and delusions of grandeur and indigence. Your fellow man would have sooner refused to help a blind homeless man with no food or money to his name long before the first aliens ever came to this planet.” The CEO quickly shot back, suddenly able to speak again.
Lena finally began to approach her mother, Lillian now standing confidently in the center of the room. “For the last time, why are you here?” Lena finally demanded fully recovering from her own inaction at the prospect of being unable to saving the only real friend she’s ever had.
Lillian remained where she was with a grimace of unreadable expression, careful not to trigger any part of her daughter’s laser-like gaze. “Well…believe it or not, I’m here to help.” She capped the response at the end of her sentence sharply with a smile almost as demented as her son’s. She gently lifted her hand to calmly brush her daughter’s face in an attempt to ease her nerves only for Lena to coldly reject the offer quickly taking a step back from the confrontation.
Lena again suddenly unable to meet her mother’s gazed opted nervously to stare past her at the floor. “Even if I trusted you, and I Don’t, to save the life of an alien. What could you possibly do that I haven’t already tried?” The scientist in her inquired trying her best to hide the fear and desperation in her voice.
Lillian carefully observed her Lena’s question, her eyes squinting to find the tiniest break in her daughter’s resolve, but found none. “I may not expect you to believe this but—”
“What makes you think I will?!” Lena insisted being all too aware of her mother and her brother’s manipulation tactics, practically being raised in them. Normally she’d never be the wiser in falling pray to such fantasies and fanciful wording but with the life of her best friend on the line, she knew she had no room for error or misjudgment.
“Like I said, a little bird, told me you’d be in need of my help, and as a mother, who am I to deny you that? It’s obvious you’re not doing any better without me…” Lillian finally paused with a deceptively wicked gaze and even crueler smile. “Besides I really don’t think you’d want these Super Friends to find their adoring heroine in such a pitiful state, do you?”

Author Summary: The Transmatter portal was supposed to be broken. It was supposed to be unrepairable, Supergirl had done that for a reason. But, when Lena Luthor is working late in the L-Corp Lab the last thing she expects is for it to activate. Supercorp Season 7
Working on a canon-compliant fic to continue the story after season 6...
In my head, Lena finally admitted to herself that she was in love with Kara at the end of season five. Kara loves Lena but is oblivious about her feelings.
Check out my first chapter, and then head over to AO3 for more. Thanks for reading!
Tumblr media
Lena waved as the car floated away, taking Alex and Kelly on to their next adventure. Talk about an exit. She glanced over at Kara, who turned at the same time to smile at her. Kara’s face was radiant, practically glowing, and her glasses were nowhere to be seen. For the first time in a long time, her smile reached her eyes, filling Lena with a familiar warmth. Blushing, she ducked her head and started clapping again, maybe a little too forcefully.
Her heart was still racing from that last conversation with Kara. It had been a long time since Kara had let her in like that, and Lena was grateful to be confided in again. Hopefully now that things had settled down, and the team had saved the world yet again, they could get their relationship back on track. And both become who they were meant to be, on their own terms. Lena couldn’t think of anything better than an authentic Kara Danvers. Kara Zor-El? Hm, she’d have to check on that one.
Lena was jolted back to reality when Nia grabbed her arm, pulling her towards a circle of their friends. “I was just telling everyone we should celebrate by going to Al’s bar. Just like old times?”
Lena nodded, “Sounds great!” Having friends to go out with still felt like a new experience for her, but a welcome one.
“Sounds super!” Esme squealed, as she pushed past Kara to be in the middle of the circle. Eliza Danvers appeared, a little out of breath. “I don’t think so, Esme. Don’t you remember? We have a special grandma granddaughter night planned.”
Esme scrunched her nose and folded her arms across her tiny body. “Aww…”
Eliza scooped her into her arms. “With lots and lots of ice cream.”
Esme’s expression softened, and she threw her arms around her grandma. “Okayyy!”
Lena couldn’t believe Esme was her goddaughter now. She was going to teach her all about lab work. And magic, if Lena could get that down safely. No one had ever trusted her with a child before, and she didn’t want to ruin it.
“Now only one question remains. How to get to the bar. Should we fly there? Use a transmatter portal?” Brainy asked seriously.
Kara laughed. “I think we’ve all had enough high-speed travel lately. Let’s carpool!”
James offered to take Winn, Andrea, Brainy, and Nia. “I’ve got a new ride. Trust me, you’ll like it,” he said as they headed towards the parking lot.
“Hey everyone, after party at Al’s bar!” Winn yelled to the larger crowd.
“Well ladies, that leaves us. Would you do me the honor?” J’onn said as he offered one arm to Kara and one to Lena.
Lena wrapped her arm around his, laughing. “Gladly!”
J’onn led them to a bright red Mustang convertible. “It’s a rental. My car was stolen by Alex and Kelly!”
“Too bad. I was looking forward to flying past all of the downtown traffic.” Lena climbed into the backseat. Kara didn’t take the passenger’s seat, instead sliding in besides Lena, brushing close to her before scooting over a few inches. “Oh come on, it’s not so bad. You get some quality time with me!”
Lena swallowed. “Ha. My ideal evening!” Kara looked over at her with a pouty puppy dog expression, so endearing Lena couldn’t help but giggle a little.
Kara reached over to squeeze Lena’s hand. “See, I knew you loved me!”
*                *                *
Lena, Kara, and J’onn entered Al’s and were waved over to a table of their friends. Lena spotted Andrea chatting with a bright purple tentacled being over at the bar. The place was filled with a colorful assortment of aliens, humans, and what looked like a group of giant venus flytraps playing a round of pool. Lena was careful to give them a wide berth as she walked by. She took a seat next to Nia, while J’onn and Kara filled the two empty seats across from her.
Winn dramatically slid a bowl of potstickers away from Kara. “Not today, Kryptonian. You know, they don’t have these in the future.”
Everyone laughed, but Kara looked deeply concerned. “No… potstickers?? Please tell me I die some heroic death before then.”
A waitress came to take their orders. Kara ordered nearly the whole menu, per usual. Winn asked for a round of Jekuul Juice shots, which sounded terrifying.
“Those all for you son? The Jekuuls do not mess around with their liquor.” J’onn asked Winn.
He smiled mischievously. “No, no, I just thought we could play a little drinking game. How about… never have I ever?”
Despite a few groans, Winn pressed forward and had the waitress put a large tray of shots in the middle of the table. “C’mon, it’ll be fun! I’ll go first. Never have I ever…not gotten married.” He wiggled his fingers to show off his wedding band.
Off to a great start. Everyone except Winn and J’onn grabbed a shot from the tray. Lena eyed the bright green drink, which was bubbling a little. Here goes nothing. She took the shot and was met with a sour taste that reminded her of pickle juice and grapefruit. Her eyes watered, but she did better than Brainy, who started coughing uncontrollably while Nia patted him on the back.
“Sorry… aspiration… physics…” He sputtered.
Nia looked at him lovingly and ruffled his blond hair. “Whatever you say Brainy.”
“Your turn, space dad.” Winn told J’onn.
“Okay… hmm. Never have I ever had a Mars bar.” J’onn said, looking like he was trying not to laugh.
“Aw man, does everything have to be a dad joke?” Winn said. “Besides, what even is a Mars bar?”
“They’re called Milky Ways here in the US.” James answered.
It was almost impossible to be friends with Kara and not have tried every candy bar ever invented. The only person who didn’t take a shot was Brainy, which was probably good for his airway. Nia promised to buy him a Milky Way on the way home.
“Never have I ever not returned something I borrowed,” Kara said.
Lena laughed. “Oh, not true. You still have my best nonstick pan—”
“I broke all of my pans!”
“And my moody mixtape—”
“I need that for sad days!”
“And my favorite eucalyptus lotion—”
“It smells soooo good!”
Nia pushed Lena back. “Okay okay we get it! Kara, you’re clearly a dirty thief. Think of another one.”
“Fine. Never have I ever not had superpowers.”
Lena went to grab a shot, but Kara reached across the table to stop her hand.
“You have powers now, silly.” Kara said.
Lena raised an eyebrow. “Have you ever heard anyone call a witch a hero?”
“Well, you’re a hero to me!”
Nia kicked Lena under the table. Lena ignored her.
“You’re just trying to make me feel guilty so you can keep all my stuff.” She said to Kara. “Okay, my turn. I’ll give everyone a break. Never have I ever spent more than a million dollars on a gift.”
“Wow, playing the rich card!” James said.
The group laughed, but Kara seemed determined to argue with her on every point. “Nope. You bought me CatCo, remember?”
“Fine. Never have I ever spent more than a million dollars on someone I was dating.”
Kara narrowed her eyes and looked a little disappointed, but she let it go.
Nia went next. “Never have I ever used my powers to impress a date.”
“Everything you do impresses me, Nia Nal!” Brainy said. Nia smiled and kissed his cheek.
Kara reached for a shot, but this time Lena was determined to come out on top. “I don’t think so, Kara. Remember when you flew across the world to bring me lunch from Paris, Milan, and Dublin?”
Nia looked at Lena with both eyebrows raised, biting her lip like she was trying not to laugh. Wait, had Nia said date too?
Lena flushed a little, but tried to play it off. “I guess friend dates probably don’t count. Brainy, you’re up.” Lena looked down at the table, wishing she could take a shot so the alcohol could calm her nerves.
Luckily, a waiter interrupted them to drop off a mountain of food, which they all dug into. After eating in silence for a few minutes, Brainy continued the game.
“Never have I ever scored lower than a 1600 on the SAT.” Brainy said.
Winn threw his hands up in the air. “Come on, why would you take the SAT??”
“I took it last week to help me fall asleep.” Brainy said seriously.
Everyone except Lena grabbed a shot. James looked impressed. “Really, Lena? You got a perfect score on the SAT?”
“Guilty as charged.”
James shook his head. “Guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Okay, never have I ever gotten a tattoo.”
Lena bumped hands with Nia and Brainy as she took a shot.
“Me and Brainy got matching tattoos,” Nia explained, clinking her glass with his.
“Indeed,” Brainy said with what looked like an attempt at a wink.
“Where’s your tattoo, Lena?” Winn asked.
“Wouldn’t you like to know,” she said before taking the shot.
Kara was staring at her a little too intently. Lena looked her right in the eyes. “Don’t you dare use your x-ray vision on me!”
“What…I wouldn’t…” Kara stammered. Her cheeks turned red and she looked away. “You know, I always win this game. I’ve never done anything!”
“Is that really considered winning though?” Lena said.
Winn put a hand on Kara’s shoulder. “Alright, we need to make Kara lose for the first time in her life! Okay… never have I ever kissed two people in this room.”
“That’s not fair! You kissed me!” Kara said to Winn.
“Rules are rules! Take the shot.”
Kara, Lena, and James all grabbed one. Winn looked confused. “Wait a second. Kara’s kissed me and James, James has kissed you and Kara. Who’s your second person?”
“I don’t kiss and tell.” Lena took her shot. She was definitely starting to feel the buzz. “But don’t worry, it’s no one at this table.”
All of her friends looked around the bar. “I bet it was that sexy plant guy over in the corner.” Winn pointed over to the group of venus flytraps. “He looks like a good kisser.”
“Alright, let’s let Miss Luthor have a little privacy.” J’onn said. “My turn. Never have I ever given a hope speech to the whole world.” He smiled at Kara like a proud dad.
Kara laughed and took a shot. “I do my best. Okay, never have I ever made a super suit!”
“Cause everyone makes them for you!” Winn said.
Kara grinned and shrugged her shoulders innocently. Winn, Lena, and Brainy all took a shot.
Lena felt warm and fuzzy. Right, need to make Kara lose. She thought of their conversation, of Kara’s insecurities at the wedding, and wanted to make her feel better. “Never have I ever been the strongest, bravest… most amazing woman in the whole world.”
Everyone went silent. Kara met Lena’s eyes, her expression soft. Lena felt her heart skip a beat.
Nia ended the silence. “Well cheers to that!” She handed Kara a shot. “Alright, let me think of something… never have I ever traveled back in time to fix a relationship!” She locked eyes on Kara, smirking.
Kara looked shocked. “Nia! I told you that in confidence!” Her voice sounded strained.
“Do tell…” Lena smiled at Kara, even though she felt a pang of jealousy thinking about this mysterious relationship.
Kara stood up, her chair smashing into the wall. “I think it’s time for some karaoke!” She grabbed a startled Winn and started dragging him to the other end of the bar, where music was playing across a small dance floor. J’onn and James followed them, but Nia and Brainy stayed seated with Lena.
Nia put an arm around Lena. “Girl, you are a mess. Can you be any more obvious?”
Lena slumped forward onto the table. “Ugh, it’s hard to act normal around Kara. Especially when there’s alcohol involved. But it doesn’t matter anyways. She’ll never notice.”
“Good point. Kara is the most oblivious person I know.”
Brainy reached past Nia to awkwardly pat Lena on the head. “All is not lost. I believe there is hope for you and Kara.”
Lena felt her eyes start to water and squeezed them closed tightly. God, why is Kara the one thing that can make me emotional for no reason? Resolving to control herself, Lena sat back up and blinked the tears away. “It’s okay guys. Things could be worse. At least we’re friends again. And I’d rather be friends than not have Kara in my life at all.”
She looked across the bar to where Kara and Winn were singing what sounded like the Weird Al version of “Royals.” Lena sighed but smiled in spite of herself. Of all the people in the world, why does it have to be this girl?
After Kara and Winn finished their duet, a couple of Saturnians stepped up to the mic and started singing an old Cindy Walker hit Lena recognized, “You Don’t Know Me.” People began pairing off to dance.
Nia grabbed Lena’s shoulder. “Slow song! Go ask Kara to dance!”
“I—” Lena shook her head. “No, I can’t.”
“Come on! Just be casual. One friendly dance.”
Lena watched Kara laugh, her face sparkling under the disco lights. Should I? Normally she wouldn’t consider it, but she had a little boost of liquid courage, and it sounded really nice.
“Okay, I’ll do it.” Before she could talk herself out of it, Lena stood and walked towards the dance floor. Towards Kara.
Right as she reached the edge of the tiled flooring, Kara turned and made eye contact with her, beaming. She waved Lena over, and Lena felt her stomach flip. Time froze, and she barely noticed James come up behind Kara and tap her on the shoulder, until Kara turned around and let him lead her to the middle of the dance floor.
Lena’s heart sank. She knew James and Winn would be gone soon, so Kara probably wanted to spend time with them while she could, but it still felt like shit. She stared at them for a few seconds and then turned away.
Too embarrassed to go back to Nia and Brainy, she made a beeline for Andrea, who was now alone at the bar. She was wearing a long eggplant-colored dress, sleeveless, with a deep slit that showed off her legs.
When Lena sat down next to her, Andrea turned towards her with a mostly empty wine glass in her hand. “Hey.”
Lena cocked an eyebrow at her. “Hey. Drinking away your sorrows?”
“Something like that.” Andrea waved over the bartender. “Another for me. And… a rosé for the lady.”
Lena cocked her head, impressed. “Sounds perfect.”
Andrea waved a hand dismissively. “I know what you like.”
“Clearly. So, I just wanted to thank you again, for saving me from Lex like you did. It was… brave.”
Andrea placed her hand on Lena’s. “Well, I owed you for talking me off the ledge… and you know, I care about you.”
Lena squeezed Andrea’s fingers and then accepted her drink from the bartender. “You know, this takes me back to college. You and me, late at night, drinking too much, coming up with schemes for world domination. Just like old times.”
“Ha. I think I’m all out of schemes.”
“Well, that’s probably for the best.” Lena touched her glass to Andrea’s, and they both drank.
Andrea looked Lena up and down. “You look hot tonight.”
Lena tilted her head down, laughing. “I’m glad someone noticed.”
“I know you. And you look like you don’t want to go home alone tonight.”
“Is that a proposition?” Lena felt her cheeks get warm.
“I thought you said you missed the old times?” Andrea seemed like she was enjoying making Lena blush.
Lena hesitated, looking over towards the dance floor, where Winn was twirling Kara around, both of them laughing hard.
She turned back to Andrea, who was gazing at her with sparkling, sultry eyes. Lena felt the corner of her mouth twitch up. “Your place or mine?”
As she walked out with Andrea, she felt her phone buzz. Glancing down at it, she saw a text from Kara: Where did you go? Feeling a little guilty, Lena slid her phone into her purse.

Our 2018 GGJ submission. Didn’t really have time to continue posting the resources as we developed them. We really only had 44 hours by the time we started it. I’ll upload more resources as time goes on. The premise is a basic Action-RPG where you scavenge a mining planet for resources while fighting your way past enemies.
More basic idea than I usually go with and it still turned into a TON of things we had to account for. Story elements are non-existent and the TextBoxes only have one purpose in this Pre-alpha version, but I wanted to try my hand at experience/stat scaling and lots of hand drawn animations.  I’m fleshing this out into a full game over time because I REALLY like the story I wrote for it and I love the concepts of the gameplay (even if most of it isn’t in this version). Keep an eye out for info posted here about it periodically. Need to learn cutscenes and transitions before I bother putting script elements into it.
