Musing Maple
Requested by @birchwood-path some musings on the Maple.
I live in maple syrup country; maples are EVERYWHERE. Sugaring season is a big deal here, not only does it generate revenue but it's very much time for community. If you were to ask around, I think almost everyone would be able to tell of some very fond memories of the sugar-shack, the stories and jokes their friends, family and neighbors shared waiting anxiously to buy syrup. Clouds of sweet-smelling steam filling the air, kids clamoring for maple taffy. The sugarmakers patiently attending the boiling sap, sometimes giving out samples of fresh warm syrup. Maybe some would be able to recant their time collecting the sap, trudging out in knee-deep snow, praying they don't spill a drop. Long before our sugarshacks and [insert state name here] Maple Sundays the native peoples had been making syrup. One story I've been told states that during a time of food scarcity someone noticed a squirrel drinking the tree's sap. they tried it for themselves and found it unpalatable, I can't quite remember how but eventually it decided the sap will be boiled. I've heard it suggested that this or the maple's inner bark was a survival food for first nations peoples. Another story I've seen involves a young boy throwing his tomahawk at a tree, sweet sap flowed out and maple syrup was discovered.
I tend to look to things that were and are important to both the settlers and the first peoples, so as long as said thing is not especially sacred (sweetgrass for example), for aide in learning how to approach this land and rectify my ancestors' mistakes. Thankfully I have native family who I can ask if what I'm doing is appropriate or not. Maple and broadleaf plantain (blog coming soon) I work with in this capacity. Maple, I understand as a tutelary spirit. I approach them almost as would approach the guardian spirit of a place or thing- I see them as a gatekeeper. I ask to be humbled, to be taught a kinder way. To be in right relations with the land and the dead this tree {spirit} has provided for since ages ago. I seek their blessing and tutelage before and while I learn from the spirit of a native plant that I'm unfamiliar with. I see them as the lifeblood of the land, sustaining generation upon generation with their arboreal blood. Great provider, Hail! gifting us saccharine sustenance when all else is barren. In the same way community is built and strengthened around the sugarhouse so too is community, spirit community, built under Their branches.
For the sap to rise we need freezing temps at night and above freezing daytime temps. This, where I am, tends to occur late January-March. Sometimes the start of sugaring season happens to line up quite nicely with St Brigid's Feast; regardless, it's the first sign of winters wane, of the spring to come. I very much see this tree as carrier, emissary or perhaps even embodiment of the "serpent in the land" we are all so familiar with. Recently I have been toying with the idea of invoking said serpent as the "white" or maybe "clear" snake- rather than the red serpent often spoken of, due to the clear sap which herald's springs impending return. Coupled with the fiery orange the leaves turn in fall I am hoping this will work quite nicely. Especially since fire-in-the-water is important to me.
I also find maple syrup a wonderful offering to the land and the dead. In certain instances, (not all, honeyed dairy imo is required sometimes) I have found it more appropriate than honey, I'll sweeten milk or cream with it the same way one would with honey. I think of this as a fitting show of adapting our traditions to the land in a way that acknowledges first peoples and our history while giving a nod to my ancestral european trads/lore.

Black Nightshade - Solanum nigrum is a commonly growing nightshade. It has many of the same Saturnian and Baneful qualities as it’s deadly cousins in the Solanaceae family. Banishing, binding, and blasting this is an easy access hexing herb and you don’t have to worry as much about poisoning yourself with it. It is a garden nightshade and this associated with the creatures that share this realm as their dwelling, specifically toads, which are important familiar Allies to the witch. The toad is an old symbol for the Devil and with this connection it is one of my favorite plants to use to conjure the Old One through the spirit of the toad. #toadwitch #toadbone #traditionalwitch #folkwitch #darkhwrbalism #banefulherbs #poisonpath #thepoisonpath https://www.instagram.com/p/ChDfMUyLUcW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Traditionally witches where black because it absorbs all the colors of the spectrum and reflects none to the eyes, drawing all energies, and enhancing the strength of one’s personal power and connection to nature. Black is associated with protection, uncrossing, and can be used to ward off any negative vibes that may be thrown your way. #witchywomen #witchesofinsta #rituals #witchcraftspells #witchcrafting #witchcraftsupplies #witchcraftforbegginers #spellworker #witchesofinstagram #witchaltar #witchvibes #covenmarket #wiccanwitch #wiccantips #wiccanvibes #paganwitch #babywitches #babywitchtips #beginnerwitchcraft #traditionalwitch #cosmicwitch #witchessupportingwitches #witchesoftheworld #witchesbroom #witchesofinsta (at Wabasha, Minnesota) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChS1lM6uw4v/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thanks to reading Lee Morgan’s _Standing And Not Falling_ a few years back now, I’ve got a refreshed perspective on belief.
Belief NOT as merely the acceptance of something’s existence or truth. To the witch, to paraphrase Terry Pratchet, gods and mailmen are equally real. But that’s a passive acceptance. That’s not what is useful. It’s a noun, a possession. “Having a belief.”
Belief AS IN one’s active participation in the re-enchantment of the soul through the Storying of the world and engaging in mytho-logic in the day-to-day. It’s belief as being “all-in” to the endless possibilities of magic and sinking into the lived reality of a spirit-filled world. It’s not play-acting or only believing something true or actual when convenient. It’s a verb. A doing. A commitment to wholeness.
Sexy! This is what Andrew Chumbley means when he wrote that sorcery is the meeting place of belief, desire, and will.

Strawberry Full Moon in Sagittarius | Moon Mantra | Moon Ritual Coven | ...
Strawberry Full Moon in Sagittarius 🍓🌝 ♐️ ✨
‘I open my heart to infinite possibilities, experience my life with joy, gratitude and curiosity, and focus my energy on my soul’s growth, as I align with my higher self.’
The upcoming Full Moon in Sagittarius is occurring on the 4th June at 03:42am GMT (04:42am British Summer Time) at 13 degrees, and 18 minutes of Sagittarius. Please note that this Full Moon occurs on June 3rd at 8:43pm PST and 11:42pm EST. As with all Full Moons, the Sun directly opposes the Moon; the Sun is at 13 degrees, and 18 minutes of Gemini.
The energy of this Full Moon is beautiful and expansive, with opportunities for healing, growth, heart-opening, love, gratitude and reaping bountiful blessings and abundance.
Full Moons are a culmination of energies, and often are a time of great intensity; they shed light on the truth, and reveal the reality of what has been in shadow, or hidden until now.
Sagittarius speaks to our beliefs, stories, how we share information, how we learn and study, the ways we like to play, expand our worlds, journey and experience life.
A healthy expression of Sagittarius rejects dogmatism and works to understand all beliefs and perspectives, and to experience the wholeness of the universe.
A beautiful way to approach this lunation is with faith and surrender in the universe, plus a playful and heart-led curiosity for the myriad opportunities and possible eventualities.
Join us the the Moon Ritual Coven to go deeper with this work.

12.25.2021 - A devotion prayed on a rosary of bone and milk offered in a mether cup sweetened with honey. Prayer, song, and poetry are the backbone of my veneration tonight. The leaves fell to make a red and gold path, their parting gift before she left - taking her warmth deep within the stones. December thunderstorms finally gave way to snow, and a new queen wakes to winter. #traditionalwitchcraft #traditionalwitch #witchesofinstagram #witchcraft #folkmagic https://www.instagram.com/p/CX693VwL3Ta/?utm_medium=tumblr

I don’t know if you’re still at work but I have a question! Do you work with saints, and if so how does that relationship work (if you don’t mind me asking)?
I am haha, 5 hours left to go
I’m starting to yes; do you mean like what working with them looks like? If so it’s not dissimilar to other spirit relationships. They’re honored on their feast day in keeping with whatever catholic/cultural customs surround said saint. Prayers are offered. They receive food, water, beeswax candles. Occasionally I go to mass or promise to for the saints. Sometimes they’ll want their name spread/public praise. I dedicate those activities or crafts which are under their patronage to them. If their patronage is a skill I don’t have I try to cultivate said skill. They’re petitioned to intercede on behalf of my catholic ancestors.
If you meant something else lmk! Happy to share what I can :)

Witch’s Ointment These ritual formulas are made with powerful plants that have been used in ceremony for hundreds of years. Nightshades, Wolfsbane and fly agaric are all herbs associated with magic and spirit flight. These entheogenic preparations may be employed for a variety of purposes: To connect with witchcraft archetypes and spirits To enhance divination, trance and spell work In combination with energy work and other spiritual healing modalities. Connecting with power plants through the plant’s entheogenic effects Medicinal properties such as relaxation and pain relief when used topically Anointing ritual tools for otherworld travel and more. These formulas are more than just a means of accessing other states of consciousness. They are living and enspirited vehicles of plant magic. - #witchsointment #flyingointment #witchesointment #traditionalwitch #folkwitch #occultherbalism #poisonpath #thepoisonpath #poisonplantallies https://www.instagram.com/p/CnkKiCerrVI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

PERSONAL IMBOLC TRADITIONS
Hello! I'm maple! I've been a practising witch for about a decade now, so I wanted to share some of my own personal traditions because I've always loved learning about all of yours! I follow the Celtic pantheon for the most part, but i tweak a lot of things ( like ingredients or themes ) to fit with my life and the area i reside ( Atlantic Canada )
These traditions are things that work for me in my own specific craft but might be helpful to see to make your own traditions or if you want to do something you like!
Cinnamon star! - The legendary cinnamon star recipe is a smash hit in our household and has a dear place in our hearts. This is the newest tradition we've made, but it's definitely the most tasty. The cinnamon represents fire, as we commonly know, and since the icing uses milk, it can be used if you work with Brigid and would like to honour her. i use THIS RECIPE HERE ( not affiliated )
Tumblr media
KEEP A CANDLE BURNING - I don't always have enough energy to do this one, but it's very good in a pinch if you forgot the holiday this year like I did. Ill light a candle, it could be any colour you have on hand, but white and warm colours are preferred if you do colour associations. I'll keep it lit from dawn to at least midnight, and usually spend the day on my art with my deities, but you don't have to do that if you don't follow any.
Music - Music! it's simple! it's free! there are plenty of lists on YouTube that are full of songs for imbolc! in our house we typically have some sort of music playing all day, so naturally this is another super easy way to feel festive!
Tumblr media
CRAFTING - This year, im putting my obscure interest in bookbinding to use and im going to be putting together a book to document my foraging this coming year. Understandably, not everyone will be able to book bind, but that doesn't mean it should stop you from being artsy! I think the coming of spring and themes of renewal are a perfect time to get started on a hands-on project! Whether you play with pearler beads or leather work, getting your hands a little dirty is always a fun thing to do.
The magic of honey - I'll probably eventually write a full article on the magic of honey, since i use it a lot in my craft, but for now il share the uses it has for imbolc. Honey has associations with healing and the golden light of the sun, and eating a bit of honey, or even something honey flavoured, is a small and very in the broom closet friendly way of celebrating imbolc, i think.
