My union has opened apprenticeship applications
Fair warning- the trades are still largely white/male/st8 and the culture is wild. For me it requires a lot of mental compartmentalization.
My union of 2000+ members has 60 women
And I know of exactly Zero Out Gay Men or Trans People in our membership (I'm sure they exist in my trade, but I have yet to meet any)
But also I make 51/hr plus benifits
Our first years start at 19/hr and get a raise every 6 months till they reach full scale
And the Chicago Women In Trades community is an incredible support system that I'm happy to connect people to
At the end of the day, I love the work I do. I love the physicality. I love the artistry of my trade. I love being able to actually see the results of my labor.
And the money. Love that weekly paycheck

It’s going to be summer here soon and I work in a machine shop in the ✨desert✨.
Because I’ve had really bad heatstroke before, I’ve become relatively heat intolerant, and if you know anything about machine shops, you know that when you have everything running it gets hot and moist really fucking quickly. To make matters worse, our current method of climate control is swamp cooling. So it gets VERY moist. We keep our bay doors open to help with air flow, but it’s miserable.
That being said, I have to wear pants. Does anyone have any recommendations for some pants that are comfortable, durable, and are better at temperature regulation? TIA

Do you ever get sent PDF Drawings without a scale?
QuickScale calculates line, path and area measurements on PDF drawings by using an accurate measurement to scale the drawing. If there are no measurements on the drawing, you can use any known measurement like a door width or parking space.

To measure an area, click on the Area button on the toolbar then click around the points and corners of the area. Similarly to measure a distance, click on the Line or Path button and click on the points and corners of the measurement.
Dimensions can be sent to a spreadsheet. The measured PDF can be printed to scale on any size printer from A4 to A1 plotters.
Drawings are often emailed in PDF format, without any scale, or not to scale. As long as you have one accurate measurement, you will be able to scale and measure from the PDF.
