It’s My Little Monday! With...Catalog Page Glow n Show Ponies / Glowing Magic Pony! With last week’s look at a sorta-custom variant Dazzleglow, this page makes sense to take a look. Europe had these as the “Glowing Magic” while USA had them as “Glow n Show”, so this is a Europe area photo from probably one of their leaflets or possibly a toy magazine. What’s up with all the orange? That’s pretty much what everybody would like to know. They heavily favor orange when it comes to transparent-ish anything (2 of the sparkle babies, 2 of these, a shimmering beauty, etc) Maybe orange is just really cheap and easy to do in transparent plastic? It makes no sense to have 2 very similarly colored characters in a single set...especially when it’s only 4 ponies! But, as you can see there are differences from the final release: Brightglow is depicted here as clearly blue, when she ended up actually a lovely color of green. Happyglow they are attempting to make reddish/pinker, but she is actually very orange. Dazzleglow is shown as pinkish, which she CAN be, but she’s also more on the purple side. This is the blue-hearts version of her (there’s another with pink hearts) Poor Happyglow you can’t even see that she has hearts at all. (And for a showcase photo like this...that’s not the best planning) Their hair is styled quite nicely (But Dazzleglow never had that thick a mane) and the set does look quite appealing here despite the differences. The Glow n Shows are a magical bunch, who still glow to this day. I would easily have a big army of these, but they are uncommon and quite costly in 2023. They’re certainly highly recommended to collect.

It’s My Little Monday! With...Old Catalog Ad for Earth Ponies! This is a pretty common photo that lives around on the internet. It is from a toy catalog that would be seen by retailers, not by the general public. It announces the debut of the turn-head pose (shy pose) and the sitting pose. (Do click the image, the resolution is such that you can read it) It shows you how they’d come with the puffy stickers and flower combs. It also has to mention ‘forehead designs’ because with how these prototype’s hair is combed you can’t really see them. Do you notice anything? Cotton Candy is sitting on her sticker, and her hair color is wrong. Why not make the art sitting for the......actual sitting ponies?? There is also something slightly amiss with Bubbles & Seashell’s eye position. It is suspected that these are painted prototypes. Why did they choose such an unflattering angle for all the photo? It’s difficult to tell that Bow Tie & AJ are cute. The other thing is in the text: Bubbles and Seashell WERE short-packed (that means in the mandatory case-by-case of ponies order, there were only 2 of each of her) Despite Cottoncandy and Blossom already being released they’re still doing 6 Cotton Candys per box. It is interesting to see a fact backing up the rarity of some of the characters, and the common-ness of others that reaches all the way to this day in 2023. Well why not the sitting pose? A simple aside that has nothing to do with the ad: they were the only 2 ponies who sat, but why? It’s supposedly because they couldn’t wear any of the ponywear clothing. Ponywear was meant to be a much bigger deal, more like Barbie outfits where you’d have a few dolls but could dress them so many ways. That’s also why Firefly’s pose didn’t appear again after the Rainbow set (except once...can you name her?) she couldn’t put on all 4 of the shoes!  *This is actually fairly ridiculous when looked back on, because other Pegasus ponies like the Masquerade pose couldn’t wear several outfits too because the wings made them too wide. It made no sense to skip the sitting/foot up poses forever because of one decision ages ago.

Did anyone else go through catalogs and circle what you wanted for Christmas? This toy and gift book is from 1954. Bicycles, dolls and trains are just some of the toys you can find in this catalog.
