Strahd-tober: 5&11 - Death House + Player chara ✦ I couldn't decide which one to work on, did both. This random coffee pot and the remains of the animated broom stayed with us for the rest of the campaign.

Do you have any advice on designing tortle (dnd) characters?
not exactly, but i did once make a critique and redesign of some live action TMNT characters. so here's the most important part of that post:
(image description: three sketch pages showing turtle anatomy, followed by two versions of turtle people, one of which is more humanoid than turtle, the second of which relies more on actual turtle anatomy. end description.)
the thing to pay attention to with turtle people designs, is that the shell is part of the skeleton and it covers the entire torso. so turtle people will have very very limited flexibility.
if you want them to be able to pull their head and limbs into the shell, you need to make sure their skin is squishy enough to allow it. so less dense muscle, more flabby skin, head and limbs small enough to pull back into the shell. box turtles are a great reference for that.
here are some videos on turtle anatomy:
turtle defense
what's' inside a turtle shell
galapagos tortoise hiding in its shell
box turtle hiding in its shell

"I am a tortle. I am a fungus. I am - we are - a great many things, really. All the tiny parts that bundled together make up my shape, or your shape. And all the greater things that we are mere fractions of. We are the sum of our parts, yes, and the parts of some. Somewhere in-between the tiniest form, a cell or a spore, to the largest ecosystems of life. And we are all many and we are all one."

Ah my 3 fave d&d characters; a bored psychopath, an emotional unavailable warrior and the most wholesome creature you will ever meet, all in one drawing
