#mash #m*a*s*h #this isn't about anything specific #and there is also worth in taking and analysing mash as a whole #but sometimes you have to step back and remind yourself its a tv show #not in the 'its not real' way but in the 'it works like a tv show' way #I think the only specific thing I could use as an example rn is the criticisms I've seen of them not changing locations more often #and yeah the m is for mobile but do you know how insanely expensive it would be to film more bug out scenes? #and how insanely boring they would be to watch all the time #And when it comes to the tonal shift and its effect on the message that is a very good conversation to have with important criticisms #but I also saw some criticisms mostly in articles and books you know that boiled down #to why isn't this later episode exactly like an earlier episode :/ and I was like uhm because they already wrote that episode? #long story short: NUANCE #note: this post has been in my drafts for a while and I just wanted to free it

i think the best way i can articulate why this episode is my favorite of the whole show so far is that it was so emotionally gratifying i don't even care about the pacing issues

#like there was a scene i thought could have been cut. and i felt like it went a tiny bit too fast in some areas. #i don't actually think fizz and blitz's relationship mending was rushed or forced but ik that's an unpopular opinion. #but like..... i am a WRITER. picking apart narratives and storytelling functions is literally what i do entirely #and it is a very good skill to be able to detach yourself from the technical meta and know when to just... allow yourself to be entertained #not to say you can't ever criticize writing; or the writing of this show specifically; because it CAN struggle #(i think s2e5 had some massive tonal/pacing issues that can't really be overlooked) #but there comes a point at which you can decide to cling to nitpicks and tear the show apart #or just. accept that its a silly low stakes comedy cartoon and focus on how it makes you FEEL instead #again like s2e5 is a good example i feel bc the writing was SO underwhelming that it was actively distracting from the story #but in s2e6 i was so emotionally invested and consistently entertained that i didn't even MIND the rushed scenes or anything #like. im banging pots and pans together does this make any sense. this show is meant to be entertaining first and foremost not #subject to rutheless criticism of the writing and technical development. learn to have fun with it and if its not fun you can leave!!! #mine #helluva boss #helluva boss oops #e: oops

something i think angel does really well basically from its first episode is establish its own tone/style/feel in a way that lets it be its own show but also still makes it feel like it fits in the universe that btvs introduced us to. i think that's a big part of why (despite how garbage some of the choices are later on lmao) i still always come back to angel after buffy, and why it was a pretty successful spinoff

Was going to make a joke about a rwrb rhaenicent au but that’s pretty much just a modern au I think. Princess rhaenyra who they changed the succession rules for which is a big deal to the daily mail or whatever and alicent as a diplomat’s daughter who taps out of their situationship at the very first tabloid piece, gets whisked away by her da and entrenched further into his conservative politics, which leads to her garnering her own politic career with the singleminded goal of starting a nuclear war with England

to be clear i don’t care if people want to have a simplified relationship with storytelling and i say simplified in a neutral way because i don’t think it’s any lesser i mean. im very intentionally planning a novel idea that whilst i imagine will have some emotional complexity (just by virtue of human characters behaving like humans) i want the plot to very simply be characters hanging out. it’s just interesting seeing posts framed as complex media discussion that don’t try to delve further or critically, or writing advice posts that are written with an educational tone but are reducing complex ideas to very mechanical and often unhelpful do A or B approaches. anyway this is what happens when i let my sleep schedule become nocturnal i should be unconscious right now instead of yapping on here

donna’s ending just breaks me aghhh to lose the doctor AND to lose all your memories of your time with the doctor!!! this experience that has become this huge part of who you are and how you understand yourself!!!! and i think david tennant’s acting in that scene is so good just the understated grief of losing this one specific person you cared about but also beneath it just an eternity of living this moment over and over again. just the way he sort of withdraws - he’s kind to her and you can see it pains him to cause her pain but also there’s a script for this particular grief, there’s a script for leaving his companions behind, and the specific details might vary and the specific grief might have a different texture each time but: same loss, lived over and over. over and over and over forever. it hurts me!!!!!

#doctor who #this episode is a particularly good example of the wild tonal differences too aha #just the cheesiest special effects ever and the corniest villains imaginable #and then just DEVASTATING HUMAN MOMENT

#both a post and an example of something. #see. im autistic. but tone indicators dont help me at all. they dont give rnough information and often are cinfusing and hard to understand #actually writing out your tone like im doing here is probably the most helpful way to ellucidate what you mean than any “/whatever”s #but it is kinda unweildy. and bad for short posts like this especially where tone switches rapidly from sentence to sentence. #ill have to work on figuring out another system for these things #andvi dont expect ill use it often unless i need to stress tonal clarity #but still. post to show the kind of accessiblity concerns i have and the adaptations i would find actually helpful #rather than those goddamn tone tags that just make it worse to me frankly #if anyones got suggestions for ways to encode this information into text without it being so bulky on screen #or without having to use readers-have-to-memorise-the-system things like tone tags #thatd be helpful

what are your thoughts on the differences between Early Access characters and full release? Did you play it?

I don't play early access games. I don't have the time for it, believe it or not, and I also don't want to burn myself out on (usually) shittier versions of games without experiencing the full scope. If someone wants me to beta test their game, they can pay me.

I played the first Darkest Dungeon in the earliest patches, and it's forever tainted my perception of early access games for me personally.

That said, I can only go off of what people say about those versions of the characters and that is exceedingly difficult without just watching playthroughs of those various versions. Why? There are plenty of people who have their heads on straight, but I see enough mythologizing of cut content, older sketches of things, etc. for me to be wary of relying on second-hand accounts. And I definitely don't have time to watch playthroughs of an obsolete version of this video game lol.

Anywho, my point is: I like the game at release. Thinking about what was and what could have been is as useful to me as rocks in my shoes. I prefer to discuss what we have.

#hey you can ask me things! #I do wonder if some of the people that talk about how “bitchy” some of the characters haven't actually played full release #because I have seen how some of the characters are needlessly hostile in the early forms #but we also don't know what the latter stages of the game looked like in Larian's heads at that time #so it's possible they wanted to go the current route (push characters down 1 of 2 paths) #and the act 1 iterations from EA would have had spectacularly jarring tonal shifts if choosing one over the other #or it's resource allocation/management/nobody on the team was happy either #like people imagine Larian is Swen and a nameless pile of programmers and artists #those people have opinions too you know -- and in a company like Larian if everyone wanted something else...? #+ apparently a lot of the EA complaints were that the companions were too hostile #not having played EA myself but based on a few examples I've seen I do agree with that conclusion #even the “harsher” characters in BG2 or (to use a Larian game) DOS2 are much closer to BG3 full release #and characters like Fane and Sebille are far more enjoyable for it #plus... people whine about fucking SHADOWHEART of all characters for being “mean” they would piss their pants over Sebille #what are these tags holy shit lmfao

in the most loving and least shady way possible: you CANNOT say that you think a character would wear "the cute little chains with a lock on them" and not realize that like, that is a collar.

You want to see him in a collar.

I know that the kids in the dcom tags don't necessarily know kink etiquette, but like my guys That Means Something.

(it was very fitting for the character in question to wear one, but like, I don't think a post that also used the phrases "soft grunge" and "kidcore" meant it that way)

Went into this cautiously excited, because of the concept change, but it's really good.

It feels more reminiscent of 2nd and 3rd Gen music and I got massive INFINITE/SHINee flashbacks from it.

The choreo also looks really cool.

So, all in all, please check it out. Their vocals will not disappoint you.

urban fantasy never has been a very compelling setting to me idk. it can't (or in my experience doesn't ever) go as achingly real as literary/contemporary fiction (the death of vivek oji, ocean vuong's books, bloom into you), but it can't go as fully fantasy as proper high fantasy (malazan, this one MG series I remember loving... the Tapestry?, etc.) so it's like ehhh?

i was playing dmc 3 for the first time and i love how ridiculously over the top it is and i wish capcom did the same for resi like obviously not as outlandish as dmc but again the whole like “dark serious tone” of resi remakes just feels weird as a capcom game and it kinda feels like it insists upon itself
