TMA? TME? What's that?
This is a question I get a lot on my posts talking about transfeminism; I intend to make this a masterpost with which to send people if they are genuinely curious.
What does TME/TMA mean?
TME- Transmisogyny Exempt
TMA- Transmisogyny Affected
More specifically, TMA is a catchall term for people whose experience being assigned male and transitioning to a feminine gender or presentation has made them the focus and primary target of transmisogyny. TME people are everyone else.
But isn't everyone affected by transmisogyny in some way?
In some way, yes. But TMA people are, by definition, the ones who are the primary target, and the ones who cannot escape it. A trangender man might be mistaken for a trans woman on the street and accosted, yes! However, his interactions with family, the legal system, other queer people, and any partners are going to be affected by transphobia, but not transmisogyny, because these people see him as outside the "MtF" category. This is the core of transmisogyny and why transmisogyny as a term exists separate from transphobia.
Why not use transfeminine/transmasculine?
Where I'm standing I'd like to be able to use those words with the rough understanding that they are related to one's relationship to assigned gender and transmisogyny, but there are people who do not feel that this adequately describes their identity (ie transfem people who were AFAB). I'm taking these people on good faith, but I still want to be able to discuss what TME/TMA is discussing.
Isn't this just reinventing the gender binary?
It's describing a preexisting one. The White/POC dichotomy is not "reinventing race science", it's describing how the society built on that lie affects people. Someone who uses the word "nonblack" probably knows that racial categories are artificial, but is still affected by anti-black racism, and deserves the language to talk about it. Understand TME/TMA the same way.
Also, to be clear, cisgender men are TME. It is not just restating your AGAB.
What about intersex AFAB people?
This is where I am going to bow my head and admit that I do not know, exactly. It's undeniable that there are similarities in the bodies of TMA people and a cis woman with PCOS, just for example, and that the hatred that such bodies attract are going to affect her. However, it's also true that having been assigned, raised, and legally defined as a "female" is going to provide a different set of problems. If someone wants to have a genuine discuss about this, my ask box and messages are open- however, if you are not yourself AFAB and intersex, I do not care your opinion on the matter.
If it has so many problems, why use it?
Every term used to discuss marginalization has problems. "White", for example, is a category that can include or exclude Ashkenazi jewish people depending on context and usage; the border between cis and trans is one that has edge cases. But these terms are important for describing oppression and helping marginalized people! It would be absurd to completely abolish them, wouldn't it? It's the same with TME/TMA.
I fundamentally disagree that this category of people you're talking about deserve or need a word to describe their oppression, or that they have a unique relationship to that oppression.
Well. You're wrong, so

i brought this up to my wife, who is a trans woman and told me i should post this, but speaking as a tme trans man, i do feel like majority of tmes on this side of tumblr don’t actually take the time to think about how they can and often do wield transmisogyny on this site. like yeah we have those tmes on here who have “terfs dni” in their bio and think saying queer is a slur means you’re a terf but there’s tmes on here who know better than that and understand the tme/tma labels and understand that “transandrophobia” is just men’s rights activist bullshit that trans men use to be transmisogynistic but still haven’t really taken the time to think about their own actions and how they’ve engaged in harassment campaigns against trans women or how they continue to engage in harassment campaigns. many don’t even know how to recognize transmisogynistic language in posts spread around on here.
what i’ve noticed from being in these spaces (and what many trans women have already pointed out) is that there’s this sort of performance going on of being supportive of trans women and loving trans women that’s expressed through reblogging simple but transfem positive posts, for example, the one about making it easier for trans women, but in reality there is a tendency to be extremely selective about which trans women these tmes want to “make it easier” for. i said this in a previous post already, but a lot of tmes will reblog a post saying it should be easier for trans women and then the next day make it harder for them by participating in a harassment campaign against a trans woman. i’ve seen many of them reblog that post of transfeminist readings but perpetuate the exact behaviors listed out in one of the readings titled the abuser’s guide to transmisogyny (aka “how to cancel a trans girl”) by wyatt fractal starlight (please read it if you haven’t already, and please check out that list from @/molsno), which leads me to believe that many just hit reblog and did not actually take the time to read what was shared.
to me it seems like many really don’t care about understanding transmisogyny beyond a surface level, most definitely because as tmes we’re not affected by it. but even though we’re not affected by transmisogyny, that shouldn’t make us less concerned about learning more about it and our privilege as tmes. we owe trans women so much support and we talk about supporting trans women but this behavior continues to be prevalent and its just extremely frustrating and tiring to see again and again.

tme/tma bs allows TIMs to make sex-based social/political analyses & framing females as the class that oppresses them because of their maleness. This MRA framework is rapidly institutionalizing itself like i've seen some pretty important universities including this tme/tma crap in their language guides !!!
I'm astounded by the number of feminists who accept this MRA theory without being able to recognize it for what it is. Feminist threat detection has been so wiped out on the left
hey anonita? can i give both of your hands kisses and also your brain because you have put into words what ive been fucking thinking and im going WILD rn
the instant i read your ask i started losing my mind because THIS. IS. FUCKING. ITTTTTTTTTTTT... THIS IS IT!!!! ITS SO FUCKED UP AND SINISTER THEYRE REALLY TRYING TO TURN FEMALES INTO THE OPPRESSIVE CLASS HOW DONT MORE PEOPLE SEE HOW FUCKED UP THIS IS!!*!?@,@?#?!?@

Wow. This mra theory is spreading and institutionalizing itself rapidly. The universities of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania have both published documents (language guides) on their websites that included TME/TMA. This is an endorsement of the idea that female privilege (''tme privilege'') exists

It's from a training course civil servants are being sent on by the Scottish Government. The second link of the list ''the trans language primer'' has a section about tme/tma.

Love how the new thing to use agaisnt transwomen is calling all of them interphobic when they talk about the term transwoman and tme / tma … I can promise you transwomen online talking about tranmisogyny and their experiences and the misuse of their identities are not interphobic . Here is a quick guide to determine if you’ re still so up your own ass about it
1) Are you Intersex or are you Endosex ?
If you are not intersex ( aka endosex ) then drop the topic . Intersex people have become bargaining chips and what if scenarios in this and it doesn’ t take into account that we are Real People and can Talk for Ourselves . You cannot just bring us up to try and paint every transwoman online as cruel and bigoted . You are a transmisogynist and also interphobic if you start this shit btw
2) Are they actually being interphobic or are you trying to defend yourself ?
When transwoman is talking about afab transwomen , do you think she means transwomen who have transitioned or intersex people who have afab on their birth certificates but were not seen as women growing up and transitioned to female later in life ? Or is she talking about people who grew up being seen as women and then , later in life , chose to use the term transwoman to mean “ trans and feminine “ or “ my gender is soooo impossible to understand !!! “ ( HINT ! use critical thinking here . )
3) What are you trying to gain ?
Seriously , what are you looking to gain ? When you start these accusations , what do you want ? If someone makes a vent post that isn’ t worded like a perfect essay thesis , are you really the bigger person for making these accusations ? If there is no trace of her having any interphobic posts or reblogs or anything , why are you going to accuse her of it for One Vent Post . If you made a vent post and someone started wrongfully accusing you to either protect their egos or to try and undermine your word , it would suck , wouldn’ t it ? Imagine how she feels .

So here’s the thing about TERFs
They’re about as much of a monolith as the trans community.
Meaning that they have a ton of little sects that disagree with each other and cannibalize each other and can fight each other just as strongly as they fight trans people.
This means not every individual TERF is going to believe the same thing as another. In fact many of them will not agree with what we consider General TERF Rhetoric.
The problem is that they, like the trans community, have one strong agenda.
Their agenda is to destroy trans people specifically because they think trans people are upholding the patriarchal standards on womanhood. And see, TERFs are radfems; they seriously think the world would be a better place if it was woman, not man on top.
And as much as I just said that not every TERF agrees with each other, radfem has its roots in excising womanhood from manhood entirely. It’s separatism plain and simple.
I made this post a few weeks ago. It’s now the biggest post on my blog and brought a lot of my followers here, I’m sure. Here’s the thing.
I made that post to talk about issues that trans masculine people have with TERFs specifically because I was getting tired of the argument “trans men who use the word transandrophobia only talk about trans women.”
TERFs of course found this and have taken particular issue with “if you’re white, they want you to produce more white babies.”  Because, you see, TERFs think they care first and foremost about women’s bodily autonomy. They tend to be pro-choice, and a lot of them are loudly proud of not wanting children themselves. There’s a lot of nonwhite TERFs too, so of course they’re extra confused by this statement.
The thing is -- TERFs have locked arms with conservative politicians. In the US, especially since Trump but pre-Trump as well, that means white supremacists. I beg you, google American politicians who cite JK Rowling as inspiration for their conservative policies. Rowling has openly embraced being called a TERF. She is one of their loud and clear talking heads.
Once you realize that TERFs are siding with conservative politics, you can begin to understand why I said that TERFs care only about white wombs. Once you look at the fearmongering around young AFAB people potentially sterilizing their bodies, you can see that even though TERFs claim that they don’t define womanhood by reproductive parts, they really truly do.
They say, as a majority, that womanhood is femaleness. When you ask them what that means, they’ll say something about DNA. When you point out they don’t know their DNA, they may waffle a bit and try to fight back but it all goes back to what they can see.
That’s why some cis women who are typically TME suddenly become TMA. Some TERF and transphobe saw them enter a bathroom and they didn’t “pass” well enough to not get beaten up.
So, to put a final, more nuanced hat on this particular point, no, I do not think most/any of the TERFs who have seen my post actively want to force white trans men to get pregnant and carry white babies. I also don’t think that the black and brown TERFs are intentionally hurting themselves with their worldview.
I think they got sucked into a movement with open and obvious ties to white supremacy, and I think they genuinely have such trauma and hatred for the world around them currently that they see this as the only way forward and think they can disavow the parts of TERFism that they don’t like.
But the problem is it’s not like how there are trans criminals. Collectively as a community, trans people know there are Bad People who happen to be trans. It’s not the gotcha that conservatives, transphobes, and TERFs think it is. But the TERFs who align themselves with conservatives, who are racist, sexist, etc -- they’re the ones who get the air time, who help guide the laws to what they want. And the people that get hurt are not just trans people.
So I hope this is a good addendum to my original post. Thank you.
