Many thoughts whirring in my mind about Colin and Alice's conversation at the start of the episode. Specially the issue of personifying Freddie.
Colin starts out the yelling at and talking about the system like it has sentience and is causing him problems on purpose. But as soon as Alice starts talking to it, he immediately shuts her down. It's rich of him to say they shouldn't be personifying Freddie when he was literally just doing it. Why the double standard?
I think Colin knows or suspects something about Freddy that he's is not letting on. Does he have some reason to think that Freddie may have some level of intelligence? He knows something is listening to them through the computers. It makes sense for that to be connected to Freddie. It's possible that the system is actually purposefully breaking itself and causing issues and Colin has picked up on it. Making him more likely to ascribe sentience to it, but also not want to call too much attention to it. Maybe because he knows something is listening he doesn't want to let on how much he knows or suspects about Freddie's capabilities.
Then there's his vehement refusal to involve central IT. The red tape excuse is plausible but I think Colin knows that if anyone else with any kind of expertise looked at the system they would know that something is up. I think he wants to figure out what's going on himself. He doesn't want anyone else coming in and messing with his investigation. That or he has some reason to not trust central IT that he's also keeping to himself.
Also I'm sure I'm not the only one side eyeing the .jmj error. Yeah, yeah, Jon, Martin, Jonah. Again though, that feels so, obvious. It feels like something put in specifically to catch the attention of and distract everyone who is looking for clues about the archives boys being in the computers. The question then is distract us from what?

What is Alice's game?
I didn't notice it at first, but the more episode we get I start to notice how Alice is setting Sam up on bad terms with the rest of the team, it's subtle, but it's there:
her general attitude to Gwen is hostile (so is ours, as per her namesake) and she voices so to Sam, but from what we've seen Gwen is actually quite competent and civil, we've got to see more of her yet, but it seems that Sam is keeping his distance to not "betray" his friendship with Alice in turn Alice is putting certain "ideas" about Gwen into Sam's head by making jabs at how "spoiled, nepo hire" she is
she set Sam up against Colin twice now - once as a "joke" which we all read as playful, but now she told him to call Central IT "for her" right after we all heard it will not change much and only piss Colin off who will have to do all the paperwork
Lena so far is distant, she's a boss after all, but again Alice's supposed nihilism paints her as out of touch boss, not somebody that would serve as a confidant
I know, Hanlon's razor, she could simply be into bad taste jokes and genuienly is ignorant to what she's doing, but to me it feels like an isolation setup - she sets Sam up against everybody and presents herself as the only "bridge" of communication between Sam and the rest of the team.

Spoilers for episode 3 of the Magnus Protocol!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Office things:
1. Jmj error. could this be…
2. I actually cant, lol, Colin made Freddy work after begging, threatening and trying to bargain with it, and some violence. Alice, on the contrary, tried to encourage it. This is actually office comedy we've all been waiting for!
3. Oh, what this central IT is going to be? Will they send someone over to oversee? Not good, probably
4. Obviously dying to know Gwen's friend, will it be someone we know?
Case things:
1. Oh wow, it was grotesque but surprisingly beautiful. Becoming one with the nature, lying in a grass, as you body becomes soil for flowers to grow. The body transformation details are, as usual, horrible, great work!
2. The date on a case is 03.04.2009 but the date in a journal is 07.12.2009. it seems like on that date he killed her, but what is 03.04? Or did he try to kill her in april, then stalked her and finally succeeded in december?
Casenames:
I just noticed that there are names for all cases in the description! Its actually amazing, now we do have more info to break this code! So far i have no clues, but i stay optimistic :D

I cannot get over Putting Down Roots.
It's beautiful. It's narratively eloquent. It uses the medium of journal entry impeccably. It's an incredible slow burn as the narrator dissolves into maddened acceptance.
And it's just the right brand of fucked up body horror that makes my brain inexplicably excited and morbidly curious.
Genuinely one of the best short stories from the entirety of both podcasts. I actually cannot stop thinking about it.

Ok this episode is adding some fuel to the theory that cases read by the voices will have common themes connected to each voice. This is our second Norris case and between the two we have common themes of grief, specifically grieving a romantic partner, regret, and if we are pushing it, some form of body horror. Now this new case is a bit different since the doctor seems to have murdered his wife. But that also fits with Norris if we assume, as most people are, that he is Martin or at least has his voice. Martin, guilt over killing a romantic partner... Yeah. Gotta wait for another Cheater case to see if it has any shared themes with the first one.
If this pattern continues the question is, why and how? It points to there being some kind of deliberate intention behind which cases are read out loud. The obvious, and probably most popular theory is that Jon and Martin are somehow trapped in the system and choosing cases deliberately or, alternately some part of them, an echo of their consciousnesses are in there, unaware but still able to latch onto certain cases.
I however can't help but think that that's somehow too easy an answer. It's what everyone is automatically going to assume, and I can't deny it makes sense. but i can't help but think we might be being blinded by our excitement at hearing the voices of the guys we all love again. I think there's more to it. I don't know what exactly it is and I have no evidence, yet. It's just a gut feeling. I may be proven hilariously wrong, we'll see.
Also we still know nothing about Augustus, he might throw a spanner into the whole thing whenever he shows up.

I can't stop thinking about the goddamned "DPHW is like color values" theory, but I'm fixated on actually putting it into hexadecimal color system since it fits SO WELL with both the HEX having two first values able to be letters (A-F), like the category and subcategory of the statemen,t and the four last always being numbers like DPHW system, but it just doesn't fit.
All the statements so far seem weirdly color themed: the username "RedCanary", InkSoul which would direct us to a dark inky colour, Putting Down Roots talks about jasmine and vegetation in general so like pale white or lush green (?), so I was hoping by putting them into #FF0000 codes I could get some appropriate colors (with first letter of the categhorization being either A-F or a number of the letter in the alphabet - number sum of two if it's double digit past F), but damn it's just does not work.

By putting the colours in CYMK (assuming 1 = 10%, 2 = 20% so on) while ignoring the categories also doesn't work, although it does give very nice vibrant green for the Roots statement, but that's about it:

I'm sure there is something there, the gate at the end serving as a prism would be such a cool concept, but trying to figure out the "colours" of the encounters might be a bust...

"encountered a jmj error"
See what you did there...
So are the boys working together? Possibly trying to stop whatever horror is in store? Or are jon and martin fighting Jonah in the computer and making it throw errors?
Also! Fandom can we please be clear:
It's NOT Windows 95
It's Windows NT!
