What is Alice's game?
I didn't notice it at first, but the more episode we get I start to notice how Alice is setting Sam up on bad terms with the rest of the team, it's subtle, but it's there:
her general attitude to Gwen is hostile (so is ours, as per her namesake) and she voices so to Sam, but from what we've seen Gwen is actually quite competent and civil, we've got to see more of her yet, but it seems that Sam is keeping his distance to not "betray" his friendship with Alice in turn Alice is putting certain "ideas" about Gwen into Sam's head by making jabs at how "spoiled, nepo hire" she is
she set Sam up against Colin twice now - once as a "joke" which we all read as playful, but now she told him to call Central IT "for her" right after we all heard it will not change much and only piss Colin off who will have to do all the paperwork
Lena so far is distant, she's a boss after all, but again Alice's supposed nihilism paints her as out of touch boss, not somebody that would serve as a confidant
I know, Hanlon's razor, she could simply be into bad taste jokes and genuienly is ignorant to what she's doing, but to me it feels like an isolation setup - she sets Sam up against everybody and presents herself as the only "bridge" of communication between Sam and the rest of the team.

MAGPOD loves taking ideas where you would think it wouldnt be such a bad fate and actually making it traumatizing like, you think uploading your brain into a computer wouldnt hurt? you think turning into a tree would be peaceful? YOU BETTER THINK AGAIN!!!!!

I’m relistening to “putting down roots” as well as reading through the transcript and the wiki, and I have to say I’m really struggling with it? 😭 I feel very silly, but I don’t fully understand everything. Like…is it supposed to be implied that Maddie left the doctor for Gerald? Why did he have Gerald’s medical file? Was the grief counseling because Maddie left, or had he killed her and it took the police a while to figure it out? Who are the “star crossed lovers” supposed to be?
Again, I’m sorry bc I’m sure this is just me having zero comprehension skills, but I am confused 😔

Okay okay okay correct me if I am wrong but here is the list of files that chester, norris, and Augustus have read
Chester: First Shift (reddit thread file), Personal Screening
Norris: First Shift (graveyard file), Putting Down Roots
Augustus: Taking Notes
So from what I can see, Chester reads files that are online threads like blogs and reddit files, Norris does stories that have been submitted(? acquired? idk how they get these), and Augustus has only done one but seeing as Chester and Norris seem to have a pattern I think it's safe to assume he does older files like that letter.
Additionally, both of Chester's files had to do with "fucking around and finding out" so to speak. In other words, people online making bad choices and (presumably) getting fucked over because of it. Most likely getting killed too? Cuz RedCanary disappeared suddenly and the person from Personal Screening was cut off in their second to last post and(from what I could tell) did not make that last post themselves
Norris' files, on the other hand, both had something to do with people who had recently experienced some trauma and were now facing manifestations of their own regret and longing.
And while we only have one file from Augustus, his voice is elderly and refined and just...happens? to read a file for his first in-show appearance that is from the 18 or 1900s??? (though I guess this is a bit of a stretch lol)
idk it could be nothing but I feel like combined these are all too great of a coincidence to not be important. I have no clue yet what all of this could mean I'm excited to see if this all is just happenstance or if there is something that will come out of it

The roots in episode 3 of the Magnus Protocol remind me of the vines Oliver Banks saw around people who were about to die
Probably nothing tho...

What You're Willing To Overlook 14
@flufftober Day 15: Putting down roots Fandom: The Closer/ Major Crimes (Brenda/Sharon) 400 words, G Read all chapters here
Thank you for reading! I hope you had as much fun reading as I did writing! I'd love to know which was your favorite... although personally I find it really hard to choose!
---
Brenda looked up when she heard her name and squinted into the sun from under the wide brim of her hat. The sun had descended enough that it cast the house in silhouette and made it difficult to see details, but Brenda knew who was calling to her. She stuck her spade into the soil and stood, brushing the dirt off of her hands as she moved toward the house. The angle of the sun was better, once she was standing, and she could just make out the hazy figure of Sharon leaning against the railing of their wrap-around porch, and holding out a glass of sweet iced tea.
Brenda thanked Sharon for the tea with a kiss and pressed the icy glass to her forehead, her neck, her chest before finally taking a sip. “Mmm, didn’t realize how hot it was gettin’ out here,” she said appreciatively.
Sharon looped her arms around Brenda and pulled the smaller woman against her so that they could admire the garden together.
“I’m gonna get you all sweaty!” Brenda protested, half-heartedly swatting at Sharon’s arm around her waist.
“Worth it,” Sharon murmured into her ear and rested her chin on Brenda’s shoulder. “How’s the garden coming?”
“Got some buds on the daylilies, so they should be poppin’ up soon. And I think I figured out the trick with the hollyhocks this year, plantin’ ‘em right up next to the trellis…” Brenda stopped her report and began to laugh. “If only all those ex-husbands and boyfriends could see me now,” she chuckled. “They all wanted to tame me. They would all ‘bout keel over if they knew how domesticated I am now. Gardening!” She shook her head and chuckled again.
“Their loss,” Sharon shrugged and nuzzled into Brenda’s neck. “It’s very sexy when you talk about your flowers.”
Brenda set her glass on the railing and turned to drape her arms over Sharon’s shoulders. “I like it. I like watching them grow, I like the bright colors, I like knowing I had a hand in making our home beautiful. Never really cared about that before. Never really felt like I had a home to make beautiful before,” she reflected, half to herself.
“But now?” Sharon prompted, resting her forehead against Brenda’s.
“Now? Yeah, now… I’m home,” Brenda replied with a broad smile as she closed the remaining distance between them to kiss her wife.

Ep 3 - Putting Down Roots (spoilers under cut)
HOLY SHIT!!! HOOOOOOLY SHIT
Just… the idea of being consumed by nature, becoming part of the ecosystem is SO GOOD and honestly? Somewhat comforting. The idea that even when you die, you help to feed new life, return to the earth that nourished you,,, you have no idea. Im going absolutely feral
Despite what I consider a comforting topic, this statement made me so viscerally uncomfortable. I think it’s because I find the theme comforting that the vivid descriptions of his progressing infection made me feel so icky. Which I suppose is the idea so Congratulations! You succeeded!
I’m always happy for a corruption statement!!!!

Putting Down Roots
.jmj error? Jon, Martin, and Jonah?
Collin and Alice are my favorites. I love you both.
WAIT?! Alice flirting with the computer was something that actually happened in the show? I thought that was someone making a joke! I love this show so much.
"I'm not the one on all fours." It is FAR too early in this series for this. Behave yourself Alice, I'm not ready to go to Ao3 for this series yet.
Maybe the program dying would actually be the right thing to do?
Martin, welcome back...
Buried story, maybe?
Werther's Originals are tasty! If that makes me old then so be it!
Corruption from the sound of it. Very gross.
Did this guy even say why he was running or what he was running from? I'm confused why he's hiding?
Sounds like he killed this Maddie?
I do not love this man talking about maggots eat his dead flesh...
They really mustn't pay attention when the the programs talk because I would have picked up immediately on the fact that the text to speech changes it's cadence at times.
Infection/Arboreal? Terrible...
Wow Alice, you don't trust Collin. Wow!
"You made a powerful enemy tonight." Alice, better you as an enemy then Collin, who I genuinely believe would hold a grudge over this...
Gwen has friends?
"I was born down here and I'll die down here." Do NOT say that Alice! That's foreshadowing if ever there was any and I DO NOT like it!
