Iceman Almost Came Out as Gay Back in the 1990s
So prior to Brian Michael Bendis revealing Iceman (aka, Bobby Drake) was gay in the pages of his All-New X-Men run from 2015, apparently writer Scott Lobdell had planned to have Bobby come out of the closet two decades earlier but was unable to go through with his plans. Lobdell did however, lay the ground work for Bobby coming out during his time on the X-books in the mid-to-late 1990s.
Tumblr media
Specifically, during an encounter with Emma Frost back when she was still a villain, the former White Queen of the Hellfire Club briefly took control of Bobby’s mind and actually used his mutant powers in more creative ways than he ever had done before. Emma accurately pointed out that Bobby was intentionally holding back the true potential of his powers, and was using humor as a shield to mask his own insecurities due to his conservative upbringing by mutantphobic parents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Writer Sina Grace actually followed up on this old plot point from the 90s during his Iceman solo-series which immediately followed Bobby being outed by the time-displaced Jean Grey in All-New X-Men. In addition to depicting Bobby becoming more comfortable with his sexuality and gradually out to his fellow teammates, ex-girlfriends like Kitty Pryde, and especially his bigoted parents...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...Grace finally allowed Bobby to fully embrace his potential as an Omega-Level mutant. Not only did Iceman singlehandedly defeat the unstoppable Juggernaut in combat after after overcoming his greatest fear by coming out to his parents, but he began using his powers in more creative ways than before such as constructing ice-shuriken and multiple ice-clones and kaju.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Furthermore, Grace also revealed in his run that yes, during that time Emma Frost had mind-controlled Bobby back in the 90s, she actually did learn that Bobby was gay. But unlike the time-displaced Jean Grey, Emma never outed Bobby’s closeted sexuality to him or anyone else, and instead respected his privacy due to her own tragic experiences with her older brother Christian Frost being forced into "gay conversion therapy" (aka, torture...) by their abusive father.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Essentially, all of the people who try to argue that Iceman coming out makes zero sense or that it somehow "ignores/erases several decades of past continuity" (I'm looking at you homophobic Comicsgaters!) completely miss the fact that both Bendis & Grace were simply building upon the foundation that was already put in place by Lobdell back in the 90s! That’s NOT “ignoring or erasing several decades of continuity,” but the exact opposite!
And if you still need further proof that Bobby was always gay, just a reminder that during his very first appearance in X-Men (1963) #1 by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby, Iceman was the only person who was not acting like a horny jack-rabbit at the mere sight of the then-new student Jean Grey.
Tumblr media
In other words... Iceman was always gay even as far back as his inaugural issue! Suck it Comicsgaters!

im so curious what the damn pepperoni panel is
Okay so long ago (January 2013, 10 years go, dang) Brian Michael Bendis (he who fucked up modern Superman) was ruining X-men, and one of those things he did was "time displace" the original 5 X-men (Scott, Hank, Bobby, Warren, Jean) into the present, in his "All-New X-men" series.
In the 13th issue, this panel was published, which gets shared around a bunch as a meme.
Tumblr media
The "time displaced"/younger/naive Bobby Drake/Iceman making this comment, with the younger Hank Mcoy asking Professor Kitty Pyrde (Shadowcat) her option, which leads to the Professor giving this speech:
Tumblr media
About how words do matter, and Kitty's own experiences with antisemitism.
I feel the context is important.
....
This is one of the better written scenes in the run (Bendis's failures on X-men compounded as things dragged on).

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
June 30th - Iceman
Robert ‘Bobby’ Drake was born in upstate New York.  A Mutant possessesg the X-gene, Bobby first discovered his special abilities at a young age when he found himself unable to stop feeling cold and shivering.  One day in his early adolescence, Bobby and a friend were attacked by a group of bullies.  Young Bobby panicked and accidentally encased his attackers in a block of ice.   Although these boys were ultimately unharmed, the people of Bobby’s town became terrified of the young Mutant.  They organized a mob and stormed his family home.   Fortunately, Bobby and his family were protected by the local sheriff and soon thereafter Bobby was enrolled in the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters.  There he could learn to better master his ice-generating powers.  Herein, Bobby chose the alias of ‘Iceman’ as his Mutant moniker.
Along with standard scholastics, the Xavier school additionally taught Mutants to use their powers to act as superheroes as part of an effort to achieve greater harmony between the human and Mutant peoples.  Iceman became an X-Man, Xavier’s team of heroes.  Although he was the youngest member of the squad, his impressive powers made him a critical part of the team.
Iceman would serve as part of the X-Men for a number of years.  Following his graduation he decided to venture out west with his teammate, The Angel, and together they formed the new superhero group called The Champions.  He would later join a The Defenders and thereafter X-Factor before ultimately returning to the ranks of The X-Men.
His tremendous Mutant powers not withstanding, Bobby has frequently struggled with his confidence and esteem.  The traumatic events of his childhood, coupled with a turbulent relationship with his stern and overbearing father has caused Bobby to constantly question himself and not see himself as good enough; and this has interfered with his utilizing his ice powers to their full potential.  This matter have been further compounded by Bobby’s difficulty coping his sexuality.  Bobby realized that he is gay early on yet felt compelled to push the matter down and try to suppress his sexuality.  This resulted in a number of failed relationships with women… all adding to the young man’s consternation and self-doubt.
Bobby met a time-displaced younger version of himself who had been brought to the present via time travel.  The younger version of Bobby was troubled by who his older self had become.  Seeing the his older self’s struggles motivated the younger Bobby to come out and accept his sexuality.  The older and younger versions of Bobby discussed this matter and it resulted in the older Bobby also embracing this part of himself.
Bobby’s new sense of openness and acceptance of his being gay has had a remarkably beneficial effect on his mood and well being.  It has additionally helped him become more proficient and effective in the use of his powers, so much so that he has been identified as an ‘Omega Level Mutant,’ possessing abilities that could, impact and influence the ecosystem of the entire planet.
Iceman has featured in a number of the Fox Films’ X-Men movies where the character has been prorated by actor Shawn Ashmore.  The Mutant hero first appeared in X-Men Vol. 1 #1 (1963).

i hope in the spirit of rainbow capitalism marvel announces a new bobby solo series because i cannot keep up with mainline modern comics it’s too scary. in my ideal world it would be either focused on the champs or his relationships with the other original x men (specifically hank or jean). since bobby viewed hank as a sort of older brother/best friend i’d like to see more about how that’s changed with beast getting more and more deranged. id also potentially like to see something with him and prof x or magneto seeing as his dad just died and he’s working out a lot of issues and they were the only two significantly older men he had contact with in his formative years as an x-man (plus something referencing the fact magneto was the only one bobby ever told his sexuality to pre-time displacement would be good). as for the champs all of them have had pretty significant changes in their lives so it would be fun to see a more in depth look at them now. anyways hopefully they pander hard this year because i miss mr drake

So one of my favorite random bits of Marvel trivia revolves around the obscure character known as Cloud, from J.M. DeMatteis's run on The New Defenders.
Tumblr media
They're a sentient nebula who took the form of a pair of teens who they accidentally injured upon their arrival to Earth. Cloud started off preferring the female form of Carol Faber, developing the specific intentions of being in a form that Bobby Drake - Iceman - was compatible with as the two began to fall in love. But, at the same time, Cloud was also falling for Heather Douglas, Moondragon, and took Danny Milligan's male form to better suit that relationship.
Comic shenanigans happened that later led to Cloud returning to space and being exiled to Comic Book Limbo for thirty-plus years before showing up again in Al Ewing's Defenders miniseries.
A decade-plus after Cloud's last appearance, Moondragon would become a regular supporting cast member in Peter David's Captain Marvel run, focusing on the son of Mar-Vell, Genis-Vell and the human he'd been cosmically bound to, former Hulk and Captain America supporting player Rick Jones.
In that run, it's revealed that Rick's wife, Marlo Chandler began cheating on him with Moondragon, and that Moondragon was, in fact, a lesbian (or at the very least bisexual, given her prior attractions to Cloud's male form and Quasar):
Tumblr media
Similarly, another decade afterwards in Brian Michael Bendis's All-New X-Men, the time-displaced teenage Iceman is forcibly outed as gay by his similarly time-displaced teammate Jean Grey. Witness, an amazing example of reused art in Bendis comics!
Tumblr media
This change would translate onto the older version of the character (both coexisted at the time because of timey-wimey reasons) and would eventually turn him into a walking stereotype in the Krakoa era, but that's neither here nor there at the moment.
(seriously, will someone remember that Bobby's a CPA and get him a job at X-Corp? or at least give him personality traits other than being a Queer Eye reject?)
In light of these reveals, I find Cloud's storyline to be unintentionally hilarious, as they were taking the exact opposite form from what their romantic interests would eventually prefer. Poor nebula just wanted to find love...

I think speculative fiction stories where queer characters are just allowed to exist and go on adventures in worlds that aren’t homophobic or transphobic are definitely great and necessary, but there is also something I find uniquely powerful about stories where characters come to terms with and confront their identities in part through science fiction or fantasy elements. Ash in Die facing a literal manifestation of her repressed gender identity, Bobby Drake in the Iceman solo series literally seeing his time-displaced younger self experiencing the openly gay teenage years he never got to have (and also arguably the Apocalypse Seed in Liu’s Astonishing X-Men feeding on his repression and internalized homophobia even though that was written before he came out as gay), Larry Trainor on Doom Patrol facing the negative energy spirit living within him at the same time he’s grappling with his history and internalized homophobia, Jess in Black Water Sister learning to face down gods and ghosts as part of a character arc that gives her the confidence to come out to her parents. Something something fantasy elements taking feelings and experiences and manifesting them as something literal and exterior that characters can face…

X-Men Abridged: 1968
The X-Men, those ever-so-slightly exhausting mutants that have sworn to protect a world that hates and fears them, are a cultural juggernaut with a long, tangled history. Want to unravel this tapestry? Then read the Abridged X-Men!
(X-Men 40 - 51) - written by Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich and Arnold Drake. Drawn by Werner Roth, Don Heck, George Tuska and Jim Steranko
Did you know Frankenstein’s monster was an android, sent to earth by aliens as an ambassador?
Tumblr media
My English Lit professor LIED TO ME! (X-Men 40)
Whereas last year served up a cohesive narrative by making it all about Factor Three, 1968 gives us a hodgepodge of clumsy and confusing storylines. This might be due to the different writers at the helm: last year was all about Roy Thomas, this year we’ve got three dudes pulling it in different directions.
What doesn’t change is the prose. So much purple prose.
Anyway, this year is all about THE DEATH OF PROFESSOR XAVIER and THE RETURN OF MAGNETO! (If you think this is terrific foreshadowing and not something that kills all narrative tension, boy howdy, you’ll love reading comics from this era.)
Tumblr media
The best kind of foreshadowing drags you into an alley, punches you in the nose and steals your shoes. Fuck subtlety and proper twists. (X-Men 41)
Anyway, Xavier is acting all out of character: cranky, angry, impatient, barely using his powers for immoral purposes… He pushes the X-Men to the brink and continually sequesters himself with a troubled Jean.
Meanwhile, Bobby and Hank’s date with Zelda and Vera is interrupted… again. At this point, I just have to believe that Zelda and Vera are embroiled in some torrid lesbian relationship, while Hank and Bobby serve as their beards.ANYWAY, their date is interrupted by the Grotesk, the last remaining heir to an advanced subterranean species who have recently been slaughtered by an earthquake machine of human making. Look, how many underground societies does the Marvel Earth even have? Did these Grotesks live next to the Molemen? I…
Tumblr media
In defense of Grotesk, spinning him around like a fucking bola is one of the top three things I´d like to do with Angel too. (X-Men 42)
The X-Men try to stop the Grotesk from sinking the Eastern seaboard into the Atlantic, and in the end, the Professor sacrifices himself to stop him, paying pays the ultimate price!
OR DOES HE
To make it even more tragic, apparently Xavier was dealing with some mysterious illness that neither human medicine nor mutant powers could cure. But before he died, he somehow transferred his powers to Jean. (Either pretend this happened or retcon it him awakening Jean’s latent telepathy.) Anyway, Chuck wanted to prepare them for the return of… Magneto. (Also Pietro and Wanda.)
Tumblr media
Quicksilver crashes Xavier’s funeral, unsure whether he should ask the X-Men for help. He doesn’t. Meanwhile, Magneto somehow has duped some hapless time-displaced TikTokker into filming the grisly affair. (X-Men 43)
What follows is a sort of confusing crossover with the Avengers where the X-Men mostly get sidelined in favour of some drama involving the House of M. Wanda has some temporary mental damage that only Magneto can cure? Also, Pietro hates humans now, which, given the state of the world in general, I can only concur with.
Magneto captures the X-Men in customized cages, designed to be unescapable, but Angel escapes by simply pushing the right button. He flies off to get help, stumbles upon a weird and ultimately meaningless side quest and finally returns with the Avengers!
But! Magneto turns the X-Men against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! Just kidding: the X-Men pretend to go along with Magneto’s mind games, but this was all a plot concocted by the heroes to make Magneto feel like he’s winning. Instead, the heroes attack and drive Magneto back. Toad, who finally is fed up with Magneto’s abuse, emancipates himself and defies Magneto, kicking him out of the helicopter he, Wanda and Pietro flee in. Magneto seemingly falls to his death in the water.
OR DOES HE.
Tumblr media
First of all: why would Magneto just make a non-ferrous aircraft? Second of all: why would he then BRING IT ALONG? Big mad. (Avengers 53)
Following Xavier’s death, Foggy Nelson reads his will. The Professor bequeaths the school to the X-Men! Fred Duncan, Professor X’s FBI liaison is also there! And then! Juggernaut briefly returns from the dimension of Cyttorak, stirs up trouble and is then sucked back into the ruby of Cyttorak thanks to a Professor Ex Machina from the grave. This somehow convinces Fred Duncan that the X-Men should split up, fearing they may be too big a target for evil mutants and thinking they might be better at responding to threats spread out over the continent.
Tumblr media
Yeah, Angel will be so much more effective when he isn’t part of a team of much more powerful individuals. (X-Men 46)
So, the X-Men split up! In NYC, Bobby and Hank battle Warlock, the most forgettable villain ever, when he interrupts their date. They also get into a fight with hippies because of… poetry?
Tumblr media
Yeah! Put the slam in poetry slam, odd beatniks! *aggressive finger snaps* (X-Men 47)
Jean and Scott ‘go undercover’ in California, with Jean becoming a model and Scott ‘pretending’ to be her superjealous boyfriend. So, instead of actually forming a relationship, they just pretend to have one? Fuck, these two are exhausting. Jean also forgot she attends a university, apparently. Which is just as well, because it means boring Ted and his boring brother disappear from the narrative.
They are attacked by an increasingly silly string of villains and it’s obvious that nobody really knows what to do with this book. They even skip an issue: the preview for issue 49 is something completely different than what we’re getting.
The year ends of a sort of high note, however, introducing two familiar faces. Mesmero,a hitherto unknown follower of Magneto, is amassing an army of would-be mutants by… hypnotizing them? Through their… X-Gene? Among them is a curious gal named Lorna Dane, who is rocking the brown hair. Bobby saves her from her drone-like state and keeps an eye on her while the rest of the X-Men investigate Mesmero.
Lorna meanwhile takes a shower, washed out the cheap dye and is revealed to have green hair. (Fuck yeah! But also maybe buy better dye?) Bobby and Lorna are captured by Mesmero and his cronies, and Bobby warns the other X-Men telepathically. They let themselves be captured by Mesmero too, figuring it’s the easiest way to find his lair. There, Mesmero awakens Lorna’s latent magnetism powers, and bestows on her two sweet titles:
Tumblr media
Somewhere in Kenya, Storm is upset and doesn’t know why. (X-Men 50)
And, in another shocking twist (gasp²), Magneto’s alive!
Tumblr media
You say ‘aura of unspeakable evil’, I say ‘prime dom top daddy’. (X-Men 50)
He fights the X-Men while Polaris tries to determine who she holds allegiance to: the father she just met or these other randos she just met. You’d think she would maybe not want to hang out with the raving demagogue, but hey. Maybe it’s magnetic attraction. The X-Men flee, forced to regroup, and we end the year there, with the ‘innocent’ Lorna Dane under Magneto’s thrall.
Didn’t you take Art History? Oh! Issue 50 has the familiar logo for the first time, created by Jim Steranko!
Tumblr media
So one cape tassel goes over the shoulder and one goes under it? Why is there a little skull with horns in the middle? Why the strappy sandals? Mesmero, sashay away. (X-Men 50)
Ugliest Costume: It’s a toss-up between Mesmero and Polaris, but since I assume Mesmero designed Polaris’ outfit, we’ll just give it to him.
Best new character: I didn’t think she’d earn it, because I’m not the biggest fan of Lorna Dane (most writers use her as a plot device, rather than a character), but otherwise this would go to Grotesk and that’s never going to happen.
Most audacious retcon: Jean is able to psychically penetrate Juggernaut’s helmet, which used to protect him from Charles’ influence.
It’s also kinda funny how after years of retcons where Polaris, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver sometimes are and sometimes aren’t Magneto’s kids, how it is right now is the same as when it started: Lorna is Magneto’s daughter, the twins aren’t.
What to read: Nothing. This is not a great year.
Death proof: ‘Chuck’ kicks the bucket for the first time.

Was that [AUSTIN ABRAMS]? Oh no no, that was just [BOBBY DRAKE], a [CANON CHARACTER] from [MARVEL]. They are [TWENTY TWO] years old and [ARE] aware that they are not actually from Washington DC. Too bad they can’t stray from this city for long.
hello all! here’s a lil something about bobert!
where we’ve been
bobby has a pretty long comic history that I’m not going to write out here because there’s a wiki for it BUT i’ll give a selective rundown. I haven’t decided where exactly i’m pulling him from, but this isn’t time-displaced bobby- he is main universe bobby. and he has some memory (with some gaps) up until the end of the first Iceman comic run. SO:
his mutation emerged in his early teens, and he tried his best to hide it for as long as he could. his family new that something was going on, but assumed he could hide it and it would go away.
bobby’s mutation is that he can generate, manipulate, and fully control ice, snow, and cold temperatures. a lot of the time he will turn himself into an actual iceman (or a snowman!). bobby is considered an “omega level mutant” with... a lot of potential for when he believes in himself/gets creative. as a result of his main power, he also has several others like: ice clone generation, manipulating water, etc. etc.
when his powers did emerge, bobby was chased around town by an angry mob, where he was eventually put into custody for his protection. this was where he was recruited by scott summers to join the x-men! bobby drake is the youngest of the original five x-men, this is a pretty large part of his identity and something i plan to explore.
he’s left and joined other mutant related teams several times, and then been a member of many x-teams since he originally joined. he lost his powers before, he got them back. he’s the x-men’s accountant and a teacher at xavier’s school. he’s saved the world several dozen times. the world he’s from hasn’t always been kind to mutants and he still manages to stay lighthearted and makes jokes, and keeps saving them over and over despite all of that.
where we are
bobby has been in the city for probably less than a week.
he does not have a job but will probably find something in accounting while hero-ing on the side while he figures things out.
his memories are here and there- he remembers most of his former teammates
wanted connections:
a roommate!
tinder matches (as an aside bobby is gay so keep this in mind!)
new friends!
a long term love interest (we love angst here)
maybe someone he helps out as iceman!
maybe someone from the marvel universe that he doesn’t know well but becomes friends with!
maybe new hero friends from dc or other forms of superhero media!

G, K, O for the fandom asks :3
G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it?
Daisy Johnson and Robbie Reyes from Agents of SHIELD, also known as Quakerider which is what makes up a majority of my blog.
I’m not a big shipper, 90% of the time I’m neutral about canon ships and just don’t care one way or another. Romance just isn’t a big draw for me. Quakerider was just a bromance for me until Robbie’s heart eyes in the final and I just had to know if I was the only one who saw that or not. My ace ass is not very good on picking up on the romantic chemistry but oh damn that look was all I needed and now Quakerider owns me.
K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?
Ohh this is hard. Comic book character Bobby Drake is probably up there because I love how far the character has come from when I first started reading comics in the early 2000. He also probably takes it because as terrible as baby!Bobby’s coming out was, adult!Bobby’s really hit me on a personal level. For being an adult realizing their sexuality and not for dealing with time displaced versions of yourself.
O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?
Spotify picked SAINT PHNX’s Death of Me and with lyrics like
I'm down on my knees/This will be the death of me/I feel it in my bones/The devils at my door/So help me/This will be the death of me
Of course I think of my sizzling skeleton Robbie.

We’re thrilled to have BOBBY DRAKE, also known as ICEMAN, join us as FACULTY of the Academy, to teach MATHEMATICS & POWER MASTERY! They look at lot like JUSTIN BALDONI and are 31, going by HE/HIM. They’re said to be OUTGOING and are capable of CYROKINESIS.
Tumblr media
biography:
IN THE PAST:
Bobby is a native New Yorker from Long Island. His mutation first manifested while he was on a date with his girlfriend Judy Harmon, and a school bully attempted to attack them. Bobby panicked and accidentally encased the bully in a block of ice.
An angry mob believing Bobby was dangerous showed up at his home, and Bobby was taken into police custody for his own protection. The incident made local news, causing Professor Charles Xavier to notice and send Scott Summers to recruit Bobby.
Bobby was part of the inaugural class of The Xavier Institute, and while Hank McCoy remains his closest friend to this day, he’s maintained close relationships with Scott, Warren, and Jean as well. They are all his best friends.
For many years, Bobby fought alongside the X-Men against Magneto’s ‘Brotherhood’.
Bobby branched out from the X-Men after deciding to attend UCLA for college. There, he fought alongside a team called the ‘Champions’. It was a pretty short-lived alliance, but impactful nonetheless.
When the Champions disbanded, Bobby lacked a steady allegiance for a while, filtering between other teams and teaming up with individual heroes.
During this time, Bobby met his time-displaced younger self, which finally gave him the push he needed to come out as gay. After this experience, he returned to The Xavier Institute to teach classes and focus on himself.
CURRENTLY:
Bobby currently teaches mathematics and power mastery at The Academy and likely has since its inception. He’s definitely not a certifiable math genius like some other people on staff, so he probably teaches lower-level classes.
He still considers himself to be a member of the X-Men, and they are the only team he claims formal allegiance to.
Bobby has recently been dumped by his long-time boyfriend Judah due to their conflicting civilian/hero lifestyles.
powers and abilities: Bobby can generate ice and snow as well as lower his own body temperature at will.

The Massachusetts Academy: How I'd introduce the X-Men into the MCU
Basic Plot: The backstory is that the X-Men and mutants were always part of the MCU. During a particularly vicious battle, Professor X foresaw that he, the X-Men (90s Cartoon roster), and Magneto were about to be displaced (transported to an alternate dimension or timeline, let's say Age of Apocalypse), so he instituted a secret plan called Project Fastasleep (got the name from Project Wideawake) that wiped mutants from the minds of humans worldwide in order to keep mutants safe until they returned. Think X-Men Evolution. This would all be explained in the first movie, The Massachusetts Academy, with some parts remaining vague for later sequels. The movie would start with the Academy just opening to five new students (mirroring the O5), as they grow up learn of their shared mutant lineage and responsibility. They form a team in secret with help from Bobby (He teaches them mental blocks Professor X taught him). When Emma finds out, she is mad at Bobby and forbids the kids from continuing. That's the main conflict of the movie, no outright antagonist except for a few monster attacks (at least until the end). When she sees that they are needed and their team helped them to grow together, she allows them to continue. Like Homecoming, it takes place over the course of a school year.
Characters:
Headmistress Emma Grace Frost: She is very much her comic-book self (cunning, fashionable, sophisticated, you get the gist), but here, something that hasn't really been given spotlight in the movies, her softer, caring side is put upfront. Her students eventually look up to her with respect and admiration, and when that happens she uncharacteristically comes off a bit dorky. This is b/c she was always viewed as an outsider by her family and the X-Men. She grows a deep devotion to the kids and her fellow faculty members, something that is fairly new for her. She is against them making a team after what happened with the X-Men. In looking out for the kids and keeping them safe, you could say that she is a better than Professor X. Power: Telepathy/Telekinesis
Professor Robert "Bobby" Louis Drake aka Iceman: He teaches Mathematics and an extracurricular on Puns. Only Alex takes the extracurricular, and its only b/c he didn't want to hurt Bobby's feelings. He keeps Emma grounded, and, while the X-Men weren't very kind to her once her psychic "affair" with Cyclops was revealed (that happened in this canon), he recognized that there was fault on both sides and always treated her as a friend, something she has never really appreciated. That said he will put her in her place if need be. He speaks of his time in the X-Men nostalgically. He is onboard with kids forming their own team, something that puts him at odds with Emma. He forms a kinship with Shan, one he doesn't understand until he does some soul-searching in a sequel. Power: Cryokinesis/Thermokinesis
Professor Eugene "Puck" Judd: He teaches Physical Education, Literature, History, Home Ec., and whatever else Emma needs him to teach. He is a jack of all trades. Though human, his career in adventuring and intelligence makes him more than qualified. Emma restored his memories of mutants b/c he proved himself an ally of the X-Men. She hired him because she hopes to one day bring human kids into the Academy, and she believes that Puck can help her understand how to best acclimate humans to mutants. He sides with Emma when she discovers the kids' team and believes that Bobby is letting his nostalgia cloud what is best for the kids.
Alex Masters aka Havok: POV character. Too young to remember how he lost his first family, he struggles with not knowing what happened to them. He feels a need to prove that he is worth keeping around, and he believes that helping others with their issues and ignoring his own is the best way to do this. This makes him come across a pushover, and he is taken advantage of very easily. While it comes from an unhealthy place, his want to help others is genuine, and his kind, somewhat naive, self is appreciated by those who call him a friend. He views telepathy as the perfect power to help others and gravitates towards Shan b/c of this. Eventually, he gains the friendship of Lorna, Gabriel, Shan, and Kubark (at least as much of a friendship that can be gained with Kubark). His arc is about learning to deal with his issues, gaining backbone and self respect, and becoming someone that can lead if need be. Power: Ambient Energy Conversion
Lorna Sally Dane aka Polaris: Bright, manipulative, and mischievous, Lorna is a smooth-operator if ever there was one. She is the one who brings the team together in the first place, though not for any noble reasons. With no present super-team up and running, she hopes to capitalize on it by creating her own and gaining fame and recognition. After realizing the strength of Professor X's mindwipe, she's more than willing to quit, but she decides to continue when the others want to b/c she doesn't have anything better to do. Her emotions can get in the way of her otherwise intelligent thinking, and she has been known to take things to the extreme. She takes a shine to Alex, since he is the first one to agree to be part of the team. From then on, she considers him her right-hand man, and she pulls him into all her schemes. They show a good balance of enabling each other and shutting each other down when need be. Not played as romantic until a future sequel. Power: Magnetic Field Manipulation
Xi'an "Shan" Coy Manh aka Karma: The oldest, and most mysterious, of the kids, it is clear that she has some level of experience with the X-Men. In terms of strategic thinking and fighting technique, she is the most advanced. As the result of many tragic experiences, she is quiet, detached, and mechanical, literally in some ways. Whatever she starts, she finishes. For all her mysteriousness, she is out and not afraid to make it known. She is against the secret team, mostly due to Lorna's selfish intentions, and only joins them to keep them in line. When the team continues on, she takes control and turns them into a competent fighting force, with some help from Bobby. She finds herself forming a sibling-esque relationship with Alex, something that troubles her given her past. Eventually, she begins to trust the others and develops a sort of gallows humor. She does have a love-hate relationship with Kubark, as she is more than willing to take him down a peg. While she realizes he could probably kill her, they're both having too much fun to stop. Power: Telepathy/Possession
Kubark, son of Kallark, aka Kid Gladiator: Prince of the Shi'ar Empire, Kubark is used to being treated as a superior being, which makes his stay at the Academy all the more aggravating when he's treated as just another kid. He doesn't understand why he has been sent to a school for mutants when he is not one, or so he thinks. Prideful and unpleasant, Kubark has a God complex the size of three Chandilars and the power to back it up. His redeeming quality is his determination, a trait he shares with Shan, much to his dismay. He initially views the others as ants, but, after Alex shows him multiple acts of kindness and Shan proves a capable opponent, he comes to view them as cockroaches: still insects but capable of surviving. It's a step in the right direction. Power: Superman Powers
Gabriel Cohuelo aka Velocidad: Introduced as a 4 year-old at the start and a 7 year-old at the end, Gabriel has one of the worst mutations a mutant could possess. While he mentally remains the same age, his body grows older every time he uses his power. While others realize the outcome if he uses his powers to much, he remains ignorant and uses them whenever he wishes. Just as Emma is considering blocking his powers mentally, Alex makes Gabriel pinky promise to stop using his powers willy-nilly as long as Alex promises to play "Civil War" with him and give him all his desserts. From this point on, Gabriel doesn't use his powers and is only allowed to watch as the team secretly beats up the monsters. He views Alex as a big brother and Lorna as his cool boss. Power: Localized Time Manipulation
Mr. Sinister: Shadowy figure in post-credit scene. Creator of the monsters the team fights. They were engineered for the purpose of testing out the newly-assembled mutants. Comes across as a mix of flamboyant and menacing. Seems to know where the X-Men went and how to get them back.
Team Roster, Name, Influence, and the X-Men: The roster presented is a mishmash of young x-characters that I felt deserved a change at the big screen. I know some people wanted the team to start as teenagers with the O5 and others wanted the team to be in their mid 20s or so, and I thought this was a good compromise. Each of the 5 kids mirrors a member of the O5 (Alex=Scott, Lorna=Jean, Shan=Bobby, Kubark=Warren, Gabriel=Hank). The reason I didn't give the team a name is because I thought a running gag could be them arguing over a name (Lorna wants New X-Men, Shan wants Hellions, Gabriel wants Avengers, etc.). Influence comes from X-Men Evolution, various periods of the X-Men, and just from Coming-of-age movies in general. Scott would show up at the end of the second movie, and that would lead to the X-Men appearing in the final movie of the trilogy. This would start a whole new trilogy of X-Men.
