Iceman Almost Came Out as Gay Back in the 1990s
So prior to Brian Michael Bendis revealing Iceman (aka, Bobby Drake) was gay in the pages of his All-New X-Men run from 2015, apparently writer Scott Lobdell had planned to have Bobby come out of the closet two decades earlier but was unable to go through with his plans. Lobdell did however, lay the ground work for Bobby coming out during his time on the X-books in the mid-to-late 1990s.
Tumblr media
Specifically, during an encounter with Emma Frost back when she was still a villain, the former White Queen of the Hellfire Club briefly took control of Bobby’s mind and actually used his mutant powers in more creative ways than he ever had done before. Emma accurately pointed out that Bobby was intentionally holding back the true potential of his powers, and was using humor as a shield to mask his own insecurities due to his conservative upbringing by mutantphobic parents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Writer Sina Grace actually followed up on this old plot point from the 90s during his Iceman solo-series which immediately followed Bobby being outed by the time-displaced Jean Grey in All-New X-Men. In addition to depicting Bobby becoming more comfortable with his sexuality and gradually out to his fellow teammates, ex-girlfriends like Kitty Pryde, and especially his bigoted parents...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...Grace finally allowed Bobby to fully embrace his potential as an Omega-Level mutant. Not only did Iceman singlehandedly defeat the unstoppable Juggernaut in combat after after overcoming his greatest fear by coming out to his parents, but he began using his powers in more creative ways than before such as constructing ice-shuriken and multiple ice-clones and kaju.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Furthermore, Grace also revealed in his run that yes, during that time Emma Frost had mind-controlled Bobby back in the 90s, she actually did learn that Bobby was gay. But unlike the time-displaced Jean Grey, Emma never outed Bobby’s closeted sexuality to him or anyone else, and instead respected his privacy due to her own tragic experiences with her older brother Christian Frost being forced into "gay conversion therapy" (aka, torture...) by their abusive father.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Essentially, all of the people who try to argue that Iceman coming out makes zero sense or that it somehow "ignores/erases several decades of past continuity" (I'm looking at you homophobic Comicsgaters!) completely miss the fact that both Bendis & Grace were simply building upon the foundation that was already put in place by Lobdell back in the 90s! That’s NOT “ignoring or erasing several decades of continuity,” but the exact opposite!
And if you still need further proof that Bobby was always gay, just a reminder that during his very first appearance in X-Men (1963) #1 by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby, Iceman was the only person who was not acting like a horny jack-rabbit at the mere sight of the then-new student Jean Grey.
Tumblr media
In other words... Iceman was always gay even as far back as his inaugural issue! Suck it Comicsgaters!

Everyone always wants to talk about Tim at Titans Tower or the decapitations when they bring up Jason being unhinged but no one wants to talk about that random lead goon who got a flare shoved up his ass.

Red Hood and the Outlaws by Ed Benes.

Wait, I need to know,
Has Jason ever admit liking Dick? They're considered brothers in most of the nightwing comics I've read but is it the case red hood comics?
Simple answer: yes. But it's complicated.
Red Hood and the Outlaws (2011) is the only comic where Jason explicitly talks about liking Dick.
Tumblr media
Red Hood and the Outlaws (2016) Annual #1
Jason has looked up to Dick for a long time.
Tumblr media
Red Hood and the Outlaws (2016) Annual #1
He also implies that Dick was a better brother than Dick thinks which isn't saying much at all.
I honestly don't believe even a single letter that's written in this comic about Jason, Artemis, Bizarro, Roy, Kori, or Dick. It's one of the worst comics I've ever read and I only got through this by sheer force of will to know everything about every character. I don't know how it's possible but absolutely no one comes out looking good in this comic.
Jason does like Dick but it's better to not use anything from this comic or reference anything from this comic.
Scott Lobdell can go suck it. Do you want to know how terrible of a writer he is and how horribly he misunderstands characters?
He said he doesn't see Superman as a beacon of hope and light. Where other characters see Superman as someone who people should strive to be, someone who does good and helps the world, Scott Lobdell says that Superman sees himself as an alien and will never think of himself as worthy because he's an alien.
Newsflash: an alien is another word used to call an immigrant.
He's literally saying that because Clark comes from another planet, he will never fit in and will always be aware of the differences between himself and other people on earth because he's an immigrant.
He actively supports racists. He had a twitter argument with Ron Marz who writes another comic called Voodoo and Ron says, "Seriously? I was under the impression I'm allowed to think racists are bad people." TO WHICH SCOTT LOBDELL REPLIES: Wow! What a stand: "Racists am bad" Why not use your writing to change hearts and minds instead of shooting fish in a barrel.
Are you for freaking real?!
Which makes perfect sense how he treats Kori and Clark given that he has sexually harassed another comic writer and made fun of their asian features. He's sexist and racist.
He's also classist because Jason's father actually loved Jason in the original comics. But in Scott Lobdell's version, a poor man is an evil, abusive man.
So not only is he sexist, racist, and classist, he also can't write! He literally has no idea the story and background and the decades of development that went behind each character he gleefully trashes.
Okay I totally deviated but point is, it's better not to use Red Hood and the Outlaws to learn about Jason. Or anyone.
The other Red Hood comics don't really talk about Jason's love for Dick but to be fair, it was written at a time when Jason hated everyone. The reason Red Hood and the Outlaws is supposed to be important is because it is supposed to tie into current events but the problem is it can't be trusted.

Jason Todd and Roy Harper together in the New 52 are to DC what Fukiko Ichinomiya and Rei Asaka were for Dear Brother.
...no, that's not a good thing.
For many, many, MANY reasons.

Always always a pleasure to meet another Scott lobdell hater I cannot stand how he’s shaped jasons popular characterisation
I know right?!
He's honestly a trashcan of the worst traits of humanity and it rankles me that it's him that created the popular characterizations of Jason, Roy, and Kori. He did a way better job with Bizarro and Artemis on his second run but the 2011 Red Hood and Outlaws is incredibly unbearable to read.
The way he has Roy treating Kory like a douche and the way Kori gets beaten so easily and how she acts sends invisible slime down my skin. That's not even going into how Jason talks about Kori (introducing her by bra size?!). Furthermore Jason's interactions with Bruce felt shallow and meaningless. Like they were fighting just to turn Bruce into a villain because they disagreed on how to handle villains. They would talk without talking if that makes sense. The plot went nowhere and everyone's characterization in general was surface level. You never felt anything for anyone except hate. The only person you would like is Jason and that's because Lobdell pulled out every angst stop he could think of. Even making up stuff that completely goes against who Jason was in order to make it more interesting. Also having a character who's built around fighting objectification of women and saving the common people go and abandon that to chase after some supernatural creature for fun was pretty disgusting. I don't understand this sudden dropkicking of his roots and motivations.
Genuinely don't believe a word that's said in the entire comic. 2016 felt much better but it's still written by a racist, classist, and sexist and it's still meh in terms of story. But even then there are parts in the comic where I hate the way Jason's written. It's like Lobdell has hit a learning plateau but with the bar set too low.
I don't know why this comic is so sought after when he did such a terrible job. Sometimes I feel like the worse a comic writer does, the more popular the comic is.
