look i know i've said it before but sony's ps peter parker truly is the best peter parker. he's such a sweetheart and his game really balances the scrungy little guy and genius aspects of his character perfectly. the dude spends most of the game couch surfing because he gets evicted from his apartment. he leaves tony stark on read. he has zero dollars to his name because he works for doc oc pursuing projects that have the chance of making a real difference to people's lives and not working for oscorp even tho he could get a job there in a heart beat. he's subscribed to j. jonah jamison's podcast and has his suit autoplay each episode. he gets miles a job at f.e.a.s.t after his dad dies because he knows the grief of losing a parent so acutely and knows he needs something to channel that into. and i'm not very far into the miles morales game but even tho he's not even there for most of it, you can tell he's loving having miles as a partner in spider crimes. he's been spider-man alone for 8 years and has clearly just jumped into having someone to mentor. he gives him a suit with knee and elbow pads which is the cutest thing ever. he sets up training sims while he's away to keep up with miles' training and fills them with puns and does silly vulture impressions during the final stage. like how can you not love him? he is the superior peter parker and that's a hill i'll die on.

My top 10 unpopular opinions.
10. Sevendust is one of the best Metal bands I have listened to I genuinely love Sevendust, but while the band has many fans, some of us can agree that they don't quite get the recognition they deserve, and because of that, several have indeed labeled them as underrated.
They have a great unique sound that is very heavy yet melodic, and they're one of the few bands that haven't really changed their sound all too much, and yet they still come off as great and fresh...that's just me though.
9. Double Dragon (Neo Geo) is one of the most underrated fighting games I have ever played I love the Double Dragon games (most of them, anyways), and this gem for the Neo Geo is no exception.
It's loosely based on the Double Dragon movie (more on that later), and yet it actually does a great job at making the film universe seem very cool, especially as an alternate take on Double Dragon. Beyond that, it's a fun Street Fighter II-esque fighting game, which is ironic because it's published by SNK (Capcom's long-time rival behind The King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown among others).
Definitely a much better Double Dragon fighting game than Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls, and it helps that it was developed by Technos Japan aka the company behind the original Double Dragon arcade games.
8. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is overrated I used to like this movie, but upon rewatch and reflection? I realize just how cringe and obnoxious it was.
Every single character is unlikable, especially Scott Pilgrim himself, and I didn't find it all that funny. It does have a great visual style from Edgar Wright as well as some cute easter eggs for video game fans, but that's not enough to salvage it.
7. Pineapple on Pizza is fine While not my favorite topping of Pizza (I prefer Pepperoni and Meat Lovers), Pineapple Pizza is not as bad as some make it out to be, especially when compared to Anchovies.
6. The old Super Mario Bros., Double Dragon and Street Fighter movies are not the worst The first few live-action movies based on video games pre-Mortal Kombat (1995) get quite a horrible reputation among fans, but as a fan of the games they are based on, I can still watch them.
Yes, they are very loose takes on the classic games, which is largely one of the main reasons why fans hate them, and yes, they're not technically great movies either, but they can be very amusing, especially in that guilty pleasure/so bad it's good way.
I can still let them pass for at least trying to make video game adaptations work, especially since they were among the first examples of the concept. We did get better video game movies, especially the animated Mario and Street Fighter II movies, but believe it or not? We also got much worse examples (such as Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and the adaptations directed by Uwe Boll).
5. I never got into the MCU's depiction of Spider-Man I love Spider-Man, especially the first two movies by Sam Raimi, but I never really got into later Spider-Man movies beyond them...well, except for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is honestly the best Spidey flick since Spider-Man 2 (I have yet to see Across the Spider-Verse, but I have heard great things).
Tom Holland's version of Peter Parker did get a lot of praise, but I never really liked him all that much. To me, he was kind of a wuss. I recognize that he does mature by the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, but while it was nice to see him with both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield on screen, I had already lost interest in the MCU by that time.
If you like the MCU Spider-Man movies? That's perfectly fine.
4. Street Fighter III and Mortal Kombat X are some of the most overrated fighting games ever Some will scream blasphemy since I am a massive fan of both Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, hence my nickname Ryu Kang, but I never got into these particular installments.
They were both aiming to be focused on the new generations of both franchises, similar to Tekken 3, which I felt did that concept much better. The two games get a lot of love, especially among tournament players, but they're not my cup of tea, and I do prefer other Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games.
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003) is one of the best incarnations of the TMNT franchise I love the TMNT franchise, whether it'd be the 80s cartoon, the first two live-action movies from the 90s, or some of the video games like the two arcade games by Konami and Shredder's Revenge.
While the 2003 cartoon has a fanbase, it's also one that tends to be pretty underrated, especially in later times. I love how it aims to be darker and mirror the original comic books while still working within the parameters of being a Saturday morning cartoon.
I also have a personal attachment to the cartoon as I used to watch it a lot around 2003-04. Plus, I will gladly take it over later incarnations of TMNT like the Michael Bay movies.
2. Batman Forever and Daredevil (2003) are pretty underrated comic book movies These two movies do get so much hatred, I feel. While neither of them are among the greatest superhero movies ever made, I genuinely feel there was a lot of effort put into them, especially considering that they were victims of heavy studio meddling.
The director's cut of Daredevil (2003) especially salvages that movie, and I would like to see the original cut that Joel Schumacher intended for Batman Forever if they ever plan on releasing it.
1. I prefer Sonya Blade with Liu Kang over her with Johnny Cage Some of you definitely saw this coming, especially if you follow my page, but yeah, I'm not very fond of the CageBlade pairing.
I have already written many times before why I feel this way, but in a nutshell...Johnny annoys Sonya so much, and she only warms up to him whenever she's put in danger and he comes in to save the day. Also, later MK games and movies did a poor job handling their dynamic.
While Liu Kang and Sonya never really hooked up in the canon, the interactions they do have really show that the two get along well, and I do feel the pairing has fan art and fanfic potential beyond what I normally do with them.
With that being said, I don't mind Liu Kang with Kitana either (though recent MK games and movies do a poor job handling them too), and I would be biased and harsh if I said that he deserves only one between Kitana and Sonya.
So yeah, those are my top 10 unpopular opinions. If you don't agree with any of these, it's all good. Let's be civil about it.

What do you think of gwen in marvel rising? So many things are random and unanswered like, why is he named kevin not peter? What dimension is this? How are one of the lead characters of earth 616 (lika kamala) is here? The whole team is so weird and random and silly but is also really fun, her characterisation tho hmm
i think she's a good version of the character given what marvel rising is: a cartoon meant to introduce elementary schoolers, specifically girls (notice how most of the characters are female?), to marvel characters that they can invest in down the line.
the fun random silly tone: it's for ten year olds.
the totally different team: this isn't meant to introduce kids to any specific timeline. it's meant to introduce them to a bunch of different characters they can explore later.
peter is now kevin: because "by the way peter parker's dead" is going to confuse them and killing off peter parker is simply not a very adaptable part of gwen’s origin. making it just some guy still gets the point across while keeping the focus on gwen (and leaving the door open for peter to show up someday). most adaptations of gwen that set her in a world that will or might include peter someday will probably go this route for those reasons. so either there is no male friend who dies at all, or you make it someone else.
kevin's death wasn't gwen's fault and she has to clear her name: they needed to preserve some of gwen's origin story while making it age-appropriate. giving kids the pieces of "male best friend dies" + "ghost-spider is hunted by the cops" + "gwen's dad is one of the cops hunting her" + "gwen has to redeem herself to the public" without overwhelming these kids.
-> they're not old enough to unpack 'my male best friend was an incel who i had to kill, but killing him still wasn't okay, and the cops are justified in chasing me but unjust for other things.'
-> they are old enough to be introduced to the concepts of the cops not always being right, keeping a big secret from your parent, being hated for a misunderstanding, and losing a best friend.
gwen's characterization: had to be softened up as a result. they had to take a character whose stories are aimed at high schoolers and up and distill her into something eight-year-olds would understand and like. thus the lighter tone, younger age, and goofier characterization.
marvel rising gwen works because the changes to her character were made to suit the story's goals. and the goal of mr isn't 'tell a complex story,' it's 'introduce little girls to the broad strokes of gwen's origin story, her powers and her personality so they'll get attached, seek out her merch, and later, when they're old enough to read her comics, they'll already be familiar with her.'
it's like the next building block in their spider-man for all ages plan. five-year-olds watch spidey and his amazing friends and see a female character named ghost-spider and learn what she looks like. when they're a little older, they watch marvel rising, see ghost-spider, say, "hey, i remember her," and then they learn a few things about ghost-spider's personality and story. then they're ready to go exploring on their own, and when they're preteens and older, they're ready to see the moral grays in that story when they pick up her comics.

as someone who loves the sam raimi spider-man movies... i honestly DON'T want a spider-man 4.
so many spider-man fans wholeheartedly believe they're going to get a fourth raimi film, or TASM 3. to be fair, i'm not against andrew's spidey coming back. his films had a lot of potential (and the first one is great!), and he's a great peter parker imo.
but even then, i'm just... why? why can't ppl move on? the fun about spider-man is that it has so many different adaptations and different spider-people - especially miles who's finally getting the spotlight on the big screen. as much as i like tobey and andrew, i'm sick of ppl demanding their return. AGAIN. they got no way home and they still aren't satisfied with it.
and although i will always hate nwh, i also have the impression that tobey's and andrew's roles were more of a homage to the old days, so they came back one last time to help tom. i mean, i think the concept on paper is cool, too bad it pushes tom aside. still, it's been so many years, why does everyone insist tobey and/or andrew are the "only true spider-men"? there's not a PERFECT spider-man. they're all unique in their own ways. if you personally resonate with tobey and/or andrew, that's cool. but you have to respect that things change and spider-man is a hero that means different things to many ppl. that's what spider-verse explores.
when i was a kid, i did want spider-man 4 to happen. i get why some ppl don't want their childhood hero to be played by someone else. i remember being disappointed when TASM was first announced. but i think spider-man homecoming helped me accept other versions, ones that are fresh and more relatable to younger audiences. and spider-verse then opened my mind. i didn't even know miles before i saw the teaser. i was so excited! and i was not disappointed.
i mean, i think spider-verse is universally beloved in the spidey fandom, but mcu peter still gets the short end of the stick, which sucks. i'm so tired of ppl pitting the live action spideys against each other, especially to shit on mcu peter. it just feels too mean-spirited to me and it frustrates me that ppl have an unhealthy attachment to the older films.
besides, with all the bad reboots we've been getting, do you REALLY want them to ruin your childhood films? i think it's best to just let them go. or just watch the movies when you miss them.

SWAP + Spider-Man
[aka an excuse to learn about what Sylvia would do with Spider Powers, so you don't have to adapt any specific version of the character. Just do whatever you want with the concept!]
Ooooh, I like this one a lot.
Spider-Girl Sylvia would be pretty different from Peter Parker as Spider-Man. She isn't the type to seek out vengeance or fight (and she has a fear of spiders--not exactly a phobia, just a general dislike for spiders and insects-- so that's always really fun lmaooo). However, if something happens that endangers her family or something, and she finds she can actually change things and make them better, she might choose to do so out of a sense of obligation, because it would be selfish of her to stay out of any fight that isn't hers.
I think, unlike Spider-Man, she might be a lot quieter. Not nearly as funny or quippy. She also isn't a technological genius, but assuming her spider powers include giving her organic webs in her wrists, she might wear a cute costume that hides her face and swing around the city as both a form of exercise and a way to relax and get her mind off of things. She doesn't actively seek out fights and does her best to cooperate with the police when she needs to, but she also doesn't want to get involved with things like S.H.I.E.L.D. or the Avengers, no matter how much she looks up to them. Now, if she's actively sought out by them, she will most likely go along with them because it would be easier than fighting them. But ultimately, she has always wished for a peaceful life.
If she happens to see a store robbery, she will try to stop the robbers and save people with as little damage done as possible. Her first priority, as a hero, is to save the people. When it comes to archenemies, though, she never, ever tries to piss off anyone, and she doesn't have the abrasive nature it might take to brush someone off and make them feel like she's looking down on them. If she's in a particular rush, she may politely ask to be left alone so she can do her job and get to where she needs to go, which may lead to some miscommunication, but above all, peace is her goal, and if she has to sacrifice herself for others, she will.
Spider-Girl Sylvia is not a techie like Peter Parker or Aaron Amamiya. Instead, Sylvia is an arts student. She draws, plays the flute, sings, writes, acts... Unless it's three-dimensional, you name it, most likely she can do it.
She's surprisingly good at keeping her secret, too. Even from her family, once she realizes that the identity of Spider-Girl could endanger people she cares about, she finds ways to always have a proper excuse for why she was missing or late. In that sense, she uses her somewhat ditzy nature to her advantage, making excuses such as "I was hit with inspiration" or "The trains were too loud so I walked." She would definitely get overstimulated with Spidey-Senses though. That may result in her getting paranoid and pushing away everyone who tries to come close to her or comfort her.
In the end, I think it may be possible for Sylvia, as Spider-Girl, to even become an enemy of the state, because there may come a time that she lashes out, overstimulated by the sound and from suppressing her emotions for so long. It may get bad enough that S.H.I.E.L.D. has to get involved (not the Avengers, just S.H.I.E.L.D. It's not like she's attacking anyone outright, but she's disturbing the peace). She is just a high school girl with high sound and light sensitivity, and it isn't uncommon for people with autism to lash out when they're overwhelmed and have too much going on either around or inside them. Having an autistic Spider-Girl would make it possibly very dangerous for her to roam around completely on her own, unsupervised, and just "trust" that she would come when the city needed her to stop some crime.
Ultimately, though, I don't think Sylvia would do a bad job at being Spider-Girl. It would just look very different to what Peter Parker built up, and though she may gain fewer enemies based on her personality, she may also end up being dangerous in other ways because or trauma and her neurodivergent nature. I've always been a fan of the IronDad and SpiderSon dynamic, but I honestly don't think Tony Stark would take as much of an interest in Sylvia since she's not a techie like Peter Parker is. She may instead catch the attention of someone like Thor or Captain America, just based on personality alone, or even Black Widow, who feels bad dragging a "little girl" into a war zone.
This is just my take on what an artsy, autistic Spider-Girl would probably be like. Let me know what you think. Would you want this to be an AU?

The Insomniac Spider-Man 2 game coming out in less than a month and the Lizard being one of the major antagonists (villain seems a little harsh, given the context) has got me diving back into my Spidey niche interest, and I have a lot of thoughts about different things I should focus on more specifically later, but a few things rotating in my mind right now:
The Ultimate/1610 version of Connors was such missed potential bc he was such an interesting take that struck the right balance in terms of being 'ultimatized' in still having the spirit of the 616 character while fitting the grounded and more cynical tone of 1610, and he and Peter had a compelling relationship at the start of the Carnage arc in that same spirit, but he only really had one appearance and his origin story wasn't even told in the main line, so I guess Bendis was just not interested in him?
For all that the USM cartoon was kind of a juvenile mess even for a children's show, though it improved a lot over time, I genuinely think its version of Connors is one of the best adaptations of him in terms of feeling a lot like his Silver and Bronze Age comics counterpart, if on the younger side, and the Lizard arc in Season 2 was surprisingly compelling and had twists that genuinely surprised me bc I did not think a jokey show would go there, nevermind more than once.
I've written before about reading the character in the context of the original Jekyll and Hyde novella, and I definitely have a lot more thoughts on that, especially after re-reading the 1610 origin story for the Lizard, which is told in an epistolary format that reminded me of Lanyon and Jekyll's statements in the last two chapters of the book.
TSSM is still the gold standard for how to write Martha and Billy and the family relationship between the three of them, and I wish more adaptations would take cues from it if they're going to include them.
I will never stop being annoyed at the trend to villainize Curt while softening Norman and Otto, which does a disservice to all three characters, and how that has affected popular perceptions and canon/fanon of them.

Peter Parker spiderverse version for ask game LOL.
Sexuality Headcanon: bisexual
Gender Headcanon: i think all peter parkers have the potential to be cis or trans men
A ship I have with said character: mj, but i do firmly believe he and his universe's matt murdock have hooked up in his messy divorce era. i am a truther and a believer.
A BROTP I have with said character: miles and gwen and all the spiders
A NOTP I have with said character: big willie? probably also olivia octavius lol
A random headcanon: he discovered the christmas album that his alternate universe counterpart put out, and the songs have now become intrusive thoughts that he, horrifyingly, sometimes finds himself singing under his breath. he makes the mistake of doing this one day in front of baby mayday, and now she won't sleep unless he's singing "spidey bells". his life sucks.
General Opinion over said character: best onscreen adaptation of peter parker. everyone's fighting over the live action ones, but i'm just like... gestures. this is the one that truly captures peter from the comics.
send me a character, and i'll do these!

My Favorite versions of Peter Parker
Tumblr media
Spider-Man has been adapted a lot in the media over the years. Japanese Tv shows, movies, games, animated series, and so on.
It's hard to settle what would exactly be the "ideal" version of Peter Parker since every writer who tries to handle him offers their own spin on what Spider-Man should represent and why he's such a good character.
I myself wouldn't say that I have a definitive Peter Parker, but I do have several versions of the dude which I gravitate towards the most. Be it because they capture the sense of tragedy, the sense of getting up after being knocked down, the sense of friendliness, or even just the sense of humor that appeal to me so much, so I felt it would be fun to talk a little about my favorite versions of him and why I enjoy them so much!
So let's do exactly that...
Ultimate Spider-Man
youtube
I'll admit I never read much of the comics of the classic 616 Spider-Man, but I did read the entire run of Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Bendis, and I honestly really liked it.
This Peter is what I would describe as the "Puberty Spider-Man." This is a Spidey that represents what's like to be a teen trying to be a hero and slowly learning how the real world works and... how much a lot of it sucks.
It's a Spider-Man that's being challenged into continuing being a hero even though he's constantly getting disappointed by the adult world around him. Doesn't matter if it's villains, heroes, allies, teachers, or his own boss, this is a Peter who keeps being exposed to how selfish and self-centered people can be, how ready they are to use or throw away others to fulfill their goals, and how now that he turned himself into someone important, he needs to decide who will he allow to use him or if he will allow it at all.
Tumblr media
It's kinda depressing cause you see this young boy just going into this hero thing and being all "I'm gonna save people!" and then learning that it's a lot more complicated than that.
But that just makes it all the more impressive that he does keep going and doing the right thing, even with the bureaucracy of the adult world trying to swallow his motivation.
He's the Peter that was forced to grow up, but still managed to grow up as a good person who knows how to do the right thing, despite how hard the world around him tried to convince him otherwise.
Peter B. Parker
youtube
This is the "Almost lost cause Spider-Man." One of the great themes around Spider-Man is that he never gives up, never quits, never stops doing what's right, but in this case we have a Peter that almost, ALMOST indeed gave up.
Due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, this Peter ended up reaching his lowest point after losing nearly everything he cared about and feeling like there was no reason to keep going. And yet, despite everything that happened to him and having all the reason to give up and let go of the mask, he still managed to bounce back.
All because he ended up meeting a little boy that needed a hero, and thanks to that little boy he managed to find in himself the will to be that hero once again resulting in not only helping him, but the boy helping Peter as well.
Tumblr media
And now, because he decided to try one last time and take the risk with one last "leap of faith" this Peter managed to find happiness once again.
He is a guy that managed to get up after reaching his lowest point, and not only managed to bounce back but went even further and achieved a happy life with the family he never knew he wanted and needed after being inspired by a confused boy who was also just trying his best to find his place in the world.
This Peter shows how healing helping others can be, and why even when there are times you think nothing else matters there will always be something that matters.
He shows that you're never too old to learn or too lost to find yourself.
Insomniac Peter
youtube
This is the "Friendly Spider-Man." The best way I can describe this Peter is that he's incredibly wholesome and kind.
He's the dude that actually tries to chat with the people of the city and make them see that he's just a guy no different than any of them, a very humble dude, the kind you want to hang out with because you know you two would get along super well.
You can even see in his type of humor like when he's fighting Vulture and Electro and making jokes about Rocky and getting excited that one of them got it. Or in the DLC where he tries to get a high-five from Silver Sable. This is a Spidey that wants to get along with the people around him.
Tumblr media
He's not just a hero that punches bad guys, he wants to actually help them out. It's the one that comes to my mind when I think of "Friendly neighborhood Spider-Man."
This is the kind of dude you want living in your city, cause you know you can count on him when you have a problem, and this is exactly what a superhero should do, make you feel like you're safe and in good hands.
Amazing Spider-Man
youtube
This is the "Struggling Spider-Man."
He's the one that you feel sorry for because everything that could possibly go wrong with this guy always go wrong, and yes, being miserable is a thing that happens to every version of Peter Parker... But something about the way this Peter responds to it really works for me.
It's the fact that you can tell he's trying to keep his problems inside while still doing the job that needs to be done. He's not pretending his struggles don't exist or letting them completely take over him, he's just trying his best to keep going since he knows Spider-Man is needed, even if life may not be so kind to him.
Tumblr media
Each live-action Spider-Man handles how they react to their struggles in their own way. With Tobey you can really feel how it destroys him inside sometimes and with Tom it feels like he hasn't even processed the severity of what happened until it happens.
Andrew's Spidey feels like he's trying his best to stay optimistic, stay on the right path, keep fighting the good fight, despite the fact that inside he might be carrying a lot of pain.
He's a Spider-Man that I really respect because he captures the harshness of facing these struggles but also the strength to face them and keep going.
Spectacular Spider-Man
youtube
This is my favorite version of Spider-Man. Is it perfect? No. Does it capture the essence of what makes Peter Parker Peter Parker? Who knows. But when I think of Spider-Man, this is the first image that comes to my mind.
He's the "born leader Spider-Man." The kind of guy that will jump into battle with 5 different plans already formed in his head, and if they all fail he'll just come up with another 20 more because he knows he has a job to do and people to save.
This Spidey is the embodiment of confidence. Anytime he sees someone in danger he instantly goes into "have a job to do" mode and starts formulating how to best deal with the situation while making full use of all of his skills and gadgets while also taking full advantage of the environment and even his own opponents as he learns about them.
He always feel like he's in control of the situation, and even when he fails he's quick to adapt to the situation and try the next thing. He doesn't just dwell on his mistakes, he accepts them, learns, and moves on like an adult.
Tumblr media
I love this Spidey because he at times feels like the ideal version of what a mature Peter would look like. You sense no hesitation or fear when you look at him, you just feel that if you're in trouble and he shows up you're gonna be okay because this guy always gives 200% to get the job done.
Even though this is one of the "jokiest" Spider-Mans, you still know he is taking his job of saving people completely serious. If he falls, he just gets up. If a plan fails, he thinks of another one. If the enemy is strong, then he just starts acting smarter. He always has his head in the game and always sure that he has what he needs to save the day.
And I think that's it. Confidence, friendliness, growth, persistence, hope, strength, humor, intelligence, kindness, there are a lot of things to like about Spider-man and a lot of ways to adapt this character into the media while focusing on his several qualities.
These were the ones that stood out the most to me and these are the qualities about them that made them stand out so much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know Spider-Man might be going through some rough times right now in the comics, but I still love the character, still think he means a lot to me, and still hope to see more of what makes him so great in the future as well!

Review of Spider-Man 2 (PS2/GCN/Xbox)
A few months ago, I decided to play Spider-Man 2 on my VERY REAL Nintendo GameCube (Dolphin edition). Overall, I had a very fun time. Obviously the swinging is phenomenal, though it is not as approachable as the PS4 game. The combat is clunky but works most of the time. The world itself is honestly kind of barren and carried by the fact that swinging is fun. And the story is a mixed bag.
Long in-depth thoughts:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Story
There's not much but the story in this game is very weird. As you'd expect, it covers the main narrative beats of the Raimi Spider-Man 2 movie but it adds its own stuff. And, opposite of what I expected, the movie stuff is the weakest part. As an actual adaptation, it's like we're just given an abridged version of that movie. These parts of the game feel kind of lackluster compared to the other parts of the story.
An example of this is with Doc Ock. In the movie we spend a good amount of time developing his relationship with Peter and establishing him as a mentor figure, meanwhile in the game, he's given a couple cutscenes before his accident and most of his time with Peter is cut off before a fade-to-black, back to the city as Spider-Man. Spidey will then say something along the lines of "Wow dinner with Doc was great, he's so smart, love that guy" and that's it. Maybe they expected you to have seen the movie so you'd know what these gaps were supposed to be.
A retelling of the movie isn't all this game is though, and the original content it gives you alongside the movie is super fun and interesting. My personal highlight is the Mysterio story line- everyone's seen the funny health bar clip. He's introduced as Quentin Beck, who dislikes Spider-Man and challenges him publicly only to lose. Post-humiliation, he puts a fish bowl on his head and uses his mystical power of "too much money and spare time" to pretend to be an alien staging an invasion of earth. This was just a fully enjoyable and funny quest line that doesn't just pad out the game but adds to it.
There's also the entirely new character arc that Peter goes on due to his interactions with Black Cat which actually introduce added depth to the internal "Spider-Man vs Peter Parker" thing he has going on. These two and other minor game-specific beats make it feel kind of "held-back" by having to tell the movie's story. You'll have a sequence of some really fun original quests followed by a watered down version of a moment from Spider-Man 2 (the movie).
I wouldn't say this even really takes away from the fun of the game, it is just a weird discrepancy.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Swinging
It is nothing short of spectacular that this game, made in 2004, manages to have such enticing, deep and FUN traversal throughout the streets of New York. Jamie Fistrom is a genius, this idea of his was what paved the way for the evolution of Spider-Man games. But it's not perfect.
At the time, it probably was as perfect as could be but now going back to play it, there are some grievances. Mostly the problems are in the fine controls, a lot of games from this era have this "problem" of actually being TOO tight and responsive. Smash Melee is the best example (I love Melee), where it's near unapproachable for newer players due to a lack of buffer and requirement of clean execution on complicated tech.
Spider-Man 2 is not as hard to get into as Super Smash Bros. Melee but it definitely has a learning curve to it. Or I just suck. I was swinging into buildings non stop at the beginning of the game but over time you get better at it and more proficient at keeping your pace up.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Combat
The combat in this game is very similar to the Arkham games, which is funny because those games came out 9 years after this. It's fair to say the combat is unrefined but it does get the job done and the combos are fun to pull off. Where the combat fall apart for me is in boss fights.
Despite liking the vibes and progression of the Mysterio parts of this game, I did not like the Mysterio "fight" (if you can call it that) at the statue of liberty. Getting to the orbs was annoying thanks to a lack of cooperation from Spider-Man's webs paired with me probably being a little bad at the game.
Then there's the Doctor Octopus fights which were just annoying. These fights feel really inconsistent and at some point I was just spamming buttons and hoping, which worked because this game was meant for children, but it was not satisfying to bang a head against a wall for a while. I'm sure there is a way to beat him consistently but the game did not convey it very well.
The shocker fights and Rhino were much more manageable but quite simple. Overall the combat is fine but there are points where it feels like a chore.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gameplay
Gameplay loop is very important in video games, and in this game, it ranges from fun to "oh this again, yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay". The things to do in the city are: race, pizza, random crime and that fucking balloon.
Racing is a mixed bag. The races that are just swinging are fun because the swinging is fun. The races that ask you to wall run are annoying because the wall running in this game is not fun. Should be noted that I barely did any races during my playthrough and it's been months so maybe not the most accurate perspective coming from me here.
Pizza is fun, mostly because of the song, it is basically just another form of race but with more fun music and less stipulations. You just have to get from point A to points B through Z within an allotted time and make it back to point A. Don't do tricks or you'll ruin the pizza. Overall just fun.
Random crimes are incredibly annoying- after a while at least. When I started in the game, I was enjoying being Spider-Man, helping people out on a whim but as the game progressed, I realised that there are about 15 whole crimes/events to experience here. A couple are added to the RNG pool during the main story like Mysterio's robots and some walking tanks but that's it. Since you are forced to get hero points in every chapter, you have to keep doing these and by the end they are just monotonous tasks. It sucks that this is really all the city has to offer.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rating and Conclusion
Very fun game to play, technical achievement for its time and surprisingly well-aged. Combat is average, traversal is phenomenal, gameplay loop is pretty monotonous and the story is enjoyable in some parts and boring in others.

We know Batman Beyond is a great Spider-Man cartoon, but is it a better Spider-Man cartoon than Spectacular Spider-Man?
Ashamed to admit that when I was first exposed to Spectacular Spider-Man, I didn't like it because of the art style. It took me going back and rewatching it as an adult to really appreciate how good that show was, with the simpler animation style allowing for much more fluidity in the action scenes, along with Spidey getting to actually throw punches unlike the 90s cartoon.
Tumblr media
This show feels like the last great Spider-Man adaptation to primarily draw on the 616 source material rather than the Ultimate Spider-Man comics (although those definitely influenced the show as well). My favorite part was the development of MJ copying her arc in the 616 comics. MJ starts out as a party girl and slowly matures over time just like her comics incarnation, as opposed to all the other adaptions of her skipping over that character growth to just pair her and Peter together immediately. Peter himself is great, Josh Keaton would be my default "voice" for Peter if I hadn't already been raised on Christopher Barnes, and I liked how the show wasn't afraid to remind you that Peter could be a real asshole at times. Spectacular Gwen Stacy was the best incarnation of the character because it was the only one to ever give Gwen a personality or anything resembling growth until ITSV Gwen came along. Real shame we never got to see her and Peter together for an entire season because I really wanted to watch how Weisman would portray their romance and how it would end given he's said MJ was endgame.
But the real standout has to be the villains. Weisman's need to tie everything together actually works out well here because the show is focused on crime in a single city rather than an entire universe. Most of the supervillains are connected to Osborn or Tombstone in some way, because the villains are necessary to keep Spider-Man distracted. Doc Ock in this show was fantastic, I'd bet anything that the Insominac version looked to this take as a model, because seeing him go from sniveling sycophant to psychopath was masterfully done. Eddie Brock was the dark reflection of Peter Parker here that the comics have wanted him to be but never successfully pulled off. And of course this show's take on Norman Osborn/Green Goblin was perfect, Weisman and Osborn are a match made in heaven. If there's anyone besides Lex Luthor who can be the vehicle for Weisman's love of villains leaning back in their chairs and going Just As Planned! after the hero deals them a major setback, it's the guy who orchestrated the Clone Saga.
Tumblr media
Damn shame this is one Weisman show that has zero chance of ever coming back. Sony's post Raimi movies were terrible but if this show had gotten to continue I would have happily taken it over the MCU movies. Ah well, what could have been right? Perhaps that upcoming MCU cartoon will look to this rather than it's horrid successors for inspiration.
(And much as I like Batman Beyond nah, it's not the better animated Spider-Man cartoon).

Choose violence - Spider-Man. 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22.
1. Raimiverse Mary Jane Watson, easily. 3. NOPE. That'd take way too long to find!
4. "No Way Home saved MCU Spidey 'cause they fixed their shit and listened to all the fan complaints, period! No way was this always the set plan or else they'd never had made him Iron Boy to start with!" 6. Both the Peter/Mary Jane AND Peter/Gwen Stacy stans. If anything could make a good case for shipping Peter/Harry... 7. Carnage. He's hard to make engaging in canon as is, but his disproportionate popularity among fans is what I really hate. 8. There are many, but off the top of my head: every negative thing expressed about Raimi!MJ and MCU!MJ, the notion that Eddie Brock/Venom is some essential aspect of Spider-Man that has to be done and done right, and the purist idea that Spider-Man has some inflexible, stone-set canon mythos that must be adhered to in all adaptations or else it's some grave disservice to Spider-Man that fails to do the character and source material any justice (wonder if the whole "canon event" thing in AtSV is partially a shot at that).
9. Which canon? :P
10. The rampant purism, sexism, racism, and double standards. 12. Raimi!MJ, Spectacular!Sally Avril, 2017!Anya Corazon, and the Hobgoblin in general. Oh, and I also unironically like Michael Morbius and believe he deserves morb love! 16. Going back to MJ and Gwen, the "blind date build-up/party girl phase" for MJ and "the Death of Gwen Stacy" for Gwen. Lightning struck once, but trying to apply these to other iterations of Spider-Man comes off not only as forced but incredibly dated and dull.
17. More crossovers. The Spiderverse is practically beckoning us to try that out and see what we come up with! 18. The 2017 Marvel's Spider-Man series. It inevitably falls in the shadow of the 90's animated series and The Spectacular Spider-Man, but it's a solid take on Spider-Man in its own right and delivered some truly brilliant stuff, especially with its take on Doc Ock. 19. Aside from Morbius? The Spot. Not the new menacing version from AtSV, I mean the wimpy, whiny one from a single episode of the 90's animated series! The way he was written and handled was so bad yet so pivotal to the later proceedings in the plot that it crosses the line into So Bad It's Good for me. 20. The Clone Saga in the 616 comics, Season 4 and most of Season 5 in the 90's animated series, the Venom arcs of The Spectacular Spider-Man, the Cellar arc of Marvel's Spider-Man, and the Amazing Spider-Man film duology in general. 21. The Death of Gwen Stacy, Kraven's Last Hunt, and nearly everything to do with Venom and Carnage in the comics, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) back when it was getting hype online, and yes, Into The Spiderverse, which remains a very, very solid movie but not the best Spidey film and in retrospect it was merely a warm-up for what we've got now in Across The Spiderverse and Beyond The Spiderverse. 22. The motherfucking Hobgoblin! Namely Roderick Kingsley as the original one in the comics, and the 90's animated series' version of Jason Philip Macendale. Easily one of my top favorite Spider-Man villains who deserved better in canon, and still deserves more appreciation and adaptations.

The Cannon Group's Spider-Man: The Movie - The superhero movie that never happened, thank God.
Tumblr media
It's a pretty good time to be a Spider-Man fan right now.
You've got the Raimi trilogy, the two Amazing Spider-Man movies, the Oscar-winning Into the Spider-Verse and Tom Holland's MCU trilogy which ended with the acclaimed Spider-Man: No Way Home about a month and a half ago.
Not to mention the upcoming two-parter Across the Spider-Verse, a new animated MCU series titled Freshman Year and the recent announcement of a whole new trilogy of films with Tom Holland's Spidey.
But before all those, we nearly had this abomination.
Tumblr media
Let's get into it.
After the poor performance of Superman III in 1983, comic book film adaptations became a lower priority until the 1990s, when they would be revitalised with movies like Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
After a deal with Roger Corman expired, in 1985 Marvel Comics optioned the Spider-Man property to The Cannon Group, a company known for getting movies done quickly without overspending. They would have until 1990 to make the movie, after which the rights would revert back to Marvel.
Tumblr media
However, it quickly became clear that Cannon Group executives Menahem Golan and Yorem Globus completely misunderstood the character.
The treatment prepared by writer Leslie Stevens per their instruction followed photographer Peter Parker being kidnapped by a mad scientist and bombarded with radiation, mutating him into a suicidal human/tarantula hybrid. The resultant "Spider-Man" then had to fight its way out of a laboratory through the scientist's army of other mutants.
The film's planned director, Joseph Zito, said that "The producers didn't really know what Spider-Man was... they thought it was like The Wolfman."
Yeah, no shit.
Unsurprisingly, Stan Lee wasn't too happy with how his creation was being butchered and ordered a new treatment to be written by people who actually knew what the fuck they were doing with the character.
The new treatment by Ted Newsom and John Brancato introduced Dr. Otto Octavius as a mentor to a college-aged Peter Parker, with a cyclotron accident transforming them into their iconic characters Doctor Octopus and Spider-Man, respectively.
Tumblr media
That's right. We could've gotten a shitty low-budget version of Spider-Man 2.
Tumblr media
As rewrites continued, the studio began location scouting, storyboarding, set building, casting, the works.
(Did you know that Tom Cruise was in consideration to play Spider-Man? And now people think he'll be playing a Tony Stark variant in Dr Strange 2. Funny how these things work.)
However, the studio began to suffer as a result of their movies being shit. What a surprise.
After the expensive Superman IV: The Quest for Peace and Masters of the Universe were both failures, the studio found itself in financial difficulties. The budget for the Spider-Man movie got slashed, causing director Joseph Zito to quit and Albert Pyun to take his place. He was set to direct the Spider-Man movie back-to-back with a planned He-Man sequel, Masters of the Universe 2: Cyborg.
But having sunk way too much money into both projects already, they both ended up collapsing under their own weight.
Pyun was tasked with coming up with a way to salvage the projects by making use of the sets built for both films. He came up with the story for a new movie, Cyborg, over a single weekend, which actually became a minor hit for the studio and kept it running for a few more years.
Tumblr media
Anyway, you know how this story ends. A Spider-Man movie would languish in development hell for several more years before finally being produced by Columbia Pictures in 2002, directed by Sam Raimi and with Tobey Maguire as the star.
Tumblr media
While I am curious to see how the Cannon Group's project could've turned out, it's definitely for the best that it got cancelled.
This might become a series where I cover other movies that never happened if I find any others that peak my interest. Stay tuned!

Do you prefer the real universe/comic book universe of marvel aka earth 616, the sony movies both live action and animated, or the mcu? I have and always will prefer the former ones over the mcu since the MCU's takes on the stories and characters in their universe is...out there and it's not always in the best way. And the mcu also did characters like Wanda and Peter pretty dirty in some ways.
if I could Thanos-snap all Spidey media out of existence sparing only Into The Spiderverse, the first 30-something years of comics, and ideally the Raimi movies, I would do so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think the Best version of an often-told story is usually the original. A long chain of adaptations and spinoffs and remixes means, above all, that there was something special somewhere near the beginning that made countless people say over countless years "Wow, there should be more of THAT!"
Good additional material will make the original shine because it makes it seem like it was leading towards something even more amazing all along, and bad additional material will make the original shine just by comparison, but either way.

What are your favorite Mary Jane adaptations?
honestly this is kind of a sad question because i don't feel that there's any true adaptation of mj because people keep changing core parts of her character. there's no adaptation where i look and be like 'yup, that's mj!'. but i can still appreciate the alternate versions for what they are.
my number one is probably raimi!mj. she is undoubtedly very different in attitude than 616!mj, not being as witty or as lively, but she's a full person with a life independent of peter, which is sadly still quite remarkable for women in superhero films. her backstory as an abuse survivor is explored, and it informs the choices she makes in the films in interesting ways (not being able to handle criticism, dating several men in an attempt to try and find someone who makes her feel loved). raimi!mj is also an actress, which i feel like is a very essential part of who mj is, but gets changed 9 out of 10 times in an adaptation to my eternal frustration. she's allowed to get mad at peter, have personality flaws, and be strong without being a fighter. certainly, i do think the constant damsel in distressing was a flaw in the series (especially given comics mj is notable for being quite good at getting out of damsel situations without peter), but in this age of Strong Females (TM), it is just nice to see someone who is remarkable for being kind and resilient through difficult life situations rather than someone who is physically strong.
mcu!mj is such wasted potential all-around, but i will always have enormous affection for her just because zendaya is such pitch-perfect casting. it's a crying shame disney was willing to cave to racists and do a little 'she's mj but she's not wink wink' routine, but honestly even if she were called mary jane from the start, i think she'd still be quite different because pretty much every mcu spider-man character is. she unfortunately isn't allowed much of an inner life or a life outside of peter, but again, that's pretty much standard for mcu spidey. that said, i one hundred percent consider her mj. even if i choose in good faith to assume someone is claiming she isn't mj for reasons that aren't anti-black, i think it really overlooks all of the elements of comics mj that are there and actually don't get brought over much in adaptations - her figuring out peter's identity on her own, quietly pining for peter when he's with someone else, her sarcastic wit, and the fact that she finds peter's half-baked romantic gestures charming (616!mj would absolutely love a broken black dahlia necklace peter bought. the man proposed to her with a jumbo bag of m&ms, took her on a date to a soap opera set of paris, makes her disgusting pancakes, and she rolls with it all. it's very on brand.) i also quite like reimagining mj as a weird girl in high school. it feels much truer to me than the ultimates version where she's a brainiac who wants to be a reporter (i have a deep loathing for reporter!mj). mj is the girl peter never sees coming and who people think they know because of an external facade that hides her true self - fits very well with a weird moody high school girl type. so i guess the tl;dr version of mcu!mj is i'm frustrated with the way she's not allowed to be a fleshed out character, but she is still recognizably mj, and zendaya is the best casting mj's had, even if her writing isn't up to par.
i also have a soft spot for tssm!mj. i'm a fan of vanessa marshall, and while the show was tragically cut short before mj could step into the spotlight, there were a lot of promising attributes she had - good friends with gwen, passionate about acting, skeptical of relationships. i really like the ending of her intro episode where she dances with peter after prom has ended. i do think if the show had gone on longer we probably would have gotten a relatively faithful adaptation of comics mj, but alas.
beyond that, i don't have a lot of thoughts because the other mjs are just big nothingburgers - possible exception of spider-man the animated series mary jane, i haven't watched enough to say. but other than that, they have no zest, no notable 'classic mj!' moments. but my remaining misc. thoughts: i like msm!mj's design, i think a sporty look is fun. i dislike pretty much everything about the way ps4!mj was written, but responses to the game's popularity did bring mj back into focus in other mediums, so it did have that silver lining. i don't think it's fair to criticize itsv!mj, exactly, since she's not really in the movie and so we don't have much to go off of, but the idea that she and peter broke up because she wanted kids and he didn't is extremely bizarre. it's almost the exact inverse of their dynamic. i get they wanted to use it to give peter an arc as a mentor, but it felt like a very weird choice that was relying more on gender stereotypes than peter or mj's personalities. but again, it's a very small part of the movie, so it's more of a 'wait, what?' than anything. tasm!mj will always exist in my heart, despite the behind the scenes bs of 'we can't have more than one woman!!' that got her cut. i think about that goodbye she was supposed to have with tasm!gwen constantly.

Fic Writer Interview
Thanks for tagging @i-lovethatforme, @brightlybound, and @whiffingbooks! (BB & WB - sorry it took me so long LOL)
Name: Matty
Fandoms I write for: Spidey stuff (Peter/MJ, some Peter/Felicia, & Cindy Moon aka Silk) and Harry Potter (Harry/Ginny)
Favorite One-shot: this one was listed as two-shot, which I assume is a 2-chapter, but I don’t have any of those so I just chose my faves: A Welcome Interruption (for H/G) and Did You Forget Our Anniversary? (for P/F)
Most popular multichapter: right now it is Ginny Weasley & The Chamber of Secrets, but the moment I finish With The Click Of A Button that will take the top slot!
Actual worst part of writing: that phase of writing where you know what you need to wrap up a scene or convo, but you’ve looked at the section so many times that you can’t even tell if it is good or not anymore.
How you choose your titles: sometimes I have an idea of what I want the fic to be titled ahead of time, sometimes I figure it out as I’m writing it, but I usually have a vibe I’m trying to get at. Ideally something descriptive enough for a reader to remember once they’ve read the fic!
Do you outline: I love outlining and brainstorming! I go ham over an outline, it is probably one of my fav parts of the whole process because it feels like infinite potential. No deadlines, no editing or scrutinizing word choice, just pure vibes!
Ideas I probably won’t get to but it would be nice: I guess never say never but let’s be real: Miles/Gwen Inter-dimensional Detectives (I love the concept but by the time I would turn to this there will be like 4 Spider-verse movies that will be way better), HP Jumanji AU (Harry/Ginny & Ron/Hermione playing an HP version of the game with their characters as the founders, etc), HP Scott Pilgrim AU (Harry having to prove his worth to each Weasley bro, I have lots of ideas but no motivation), Spideychelle Princess Mononoke AU (it is just ripe for an adaptation and I’ve put thought into it, but I will make it way too big of a project if I ever start). Honestly, that’s just the tip of the iceberg here...
Best writing habits:
Outlining - see above
3 Draft Rule - I’m not always good at this, but remembering that: 1st draft is to just write it down, 2nd draft if to make it work, 3rd draft is to make it good (although my ‘3rd draft’ is just me editing a million times and screaming at the document until I give up)
Taking Notes - this probably goes with the outlining bit but I love just getting into an idea and sketching everything out, jotting down all my thoughts until I’m ready to make it into something, and adding anything I think of no matter where I am or what time it is
Spicy opinions: I don’t know if I have any spicy opinions so I will go with pet peeves. I hate when I pull up a fic search and there are fics with like a hundred tags. What am I supposed to do with this information? Like a character shows up twice and has 1 line but they’re tagged? They don’t need to be tagged! If your tags take up my entire phone screen I will not read the fic, I won’t even read the description. My rule of thumb when I’m tagging: if someone found my fic by that tag, would they feel like it was what they were looking for? Or would they feel like they got baited into reading it?
Tagging: I think I’m late to the game here, so anyone who wants to join! Message if you’d like me to tag you!
