Murf's Top 50 Mods - Part 3 (2020 - 2023 Edition)

I made a Top 50 list (Pt 1 and Pt2) back in 2016, talking about mods that I've used & love. But with all the goated content that the amazing TS3 community continues to churn out, I NEEDED to update my list! This one in no way diminishes or negates the other mods I've already listed--like, I shouldn't have to sit here and explain how NRAAS continues to carry TS3 on its freaking shoulders, ok. This is just MORE mods, the Top 50 most RECENT ones I've tried out since, like, quarantine.

I am a VERY niche simmer--I love fantasy gameplay, so my fave mods are the ones that not only offer general quality of life improvements, but also add new abilities and interactive objects inspired by different cultures, time periods, or genres. So y'all already KNOW which ones have earned my top spots. They're not based on which mods are "better," just which ones I personally have been using the most.

1: Smooth Patch, LazyDuchess

I've already gushed about this mod, but oh well. Like--I use an EFFTON of CC. My Live Mode gameplay itself doesn't tend to lag so much as my game's slow to LOAD, slow to save, CAS is a nightmare, I can do my taxes waiting for the Misc Decor section to open, etc etc. But the Smooth Patch loads everything so much quicker for me! 😭

One thing is that on the EA App version (curse you, EA) the Master Controller package didn't work on my end, so I took it out, but everything else has been great!

2: Search Mod, LazyDuchess

Speaking of the Misc Decor section -- HOW LONG did we ask EA for a Search function y'all? Only to be ignored. Then the second TS4 is released, it ain't got a effing thing in it, but it's got a Search function??? 🤔 ISTG it's like the simgurus were told to take all of the TS3 community's best suggestions, and poach them for TS4 (like vampire coffins--NO I'm not over it!). WHY do modders have to do your frikkin job for you, EA?! I call EA lazy all the time cuz EA you suck, so it's the most ironic thing ever that LazyDuchess is out here KILLING IT.

My ONLY "complaint" about the Search mod is the position of the icon. I use A LOT of Collection Files, and I noticed that the Search icon actually covers the Delete button when in the Collection viewer. So I can't delete items in collections with the Search icon in the way.

But this is a MINOR nitpick--I almost never delete items, it's just something I noticed is all.

3 - 8: OCCULT MODS: EVERYTHING by @puddingface1902

Y'all already know the Enhanced Witches mod is my favorite mod ever made. But PF1902 also made cool enhancements to the Fairies, Genies, Vampires, Werewolves, and Mermaids too! My sims are usually Nraas hybrids (e.g.: Sakura is a faery, witch & plantsim; Magnus Bane is a witch & genie; etc.), so it's FANTASTIC having so many new abilities for my magical occults. 😍

9 - 11: OCCULT MODS by xantak22

Even more occult mods at MTS are for enhanced Plantsims, Ghosts, and Mummies! I was dying for more Plantsim abilities, omg, they're my 3rd fave occult after Witches & Fae.

12: Sim Control Tools by Knight

Sooooo many quality of life mods have come out! ^0^

I've been ABUSING the Teleport To Me function, to quickly get sims off of lots & where I need them to be. It also lets sims unlock more Social/Romantic interactions. (Now all we need is a way to interact with sims from EA's useless thumbnails.)

13 - 18: @anitmb's mods

There are SOOOO many--most I've yet to even try. But so far newer ones I've been using are the Deck of Cards (FINALLY something other than EA's bulky AF poker table!), Farm Mod (look at all these CHICKENS!), and Hunting mod so my 8000 archer sims can actually hunt! (Ofc I've also used the Woodcutter and Anvil mods in my older gameplay posts, too.) And @mspoodle1's edit of the Cup of Tea mod is so pretty.

19: @mspoodle1's Poker table

Another excellent cards mod is this medieval style poker table I use a lot now, too.

20: @omedapixel's Wildflowers DR

I like EA's default wildflowers from SSNS, but Omeda's are just sooooo much nicer. (I haven't gotten around to trying out their Harvestable Plant DR yet.)

21: Swordfighting mod by CyrusBanefort

En garde! This mod is so freaking epic!

One thing I've noticed is that the game lags while it waits for the mod to boot up (a message has to first pop up saying it's running when you first launch your saves). But other than that this mod is excellent.

22 - 24: Yoga rugs

I've long been using the yoga rugs by Kitabalibar and the edited one from @mspoodle1. But now there's the newest one by @twinsimming, with brand new animations & features. The more the merrier I say, LOL. What's especially neat is the kids wobbling around as they try to do yoga! :3

25 - 30: TheSweetSimmer's mods--so cute! :3

Omg so frikkin many, I can't even catch up! The interactions are so freaking precious, like from the More Toddler Interactions (cuddle, look at, etc) & Biggest Little Mod (hug legs), I've never had so much fun playing with kids! <3 And I LOVE that they can Catch Butterflies and Pick Flowers--you'd think plantsim children would be able to do this by default, EA! Honestly, just grab everything by TSS, your kid sims will thank you!

31 - 33: @spheresims Medieval/Nature/Tribal mods

Y'all know I'm crazy about the Functional Fireplaces mod (the cauldrons, baby! 😈), but the One with Nature and Wildlife Hunting mods are great too, perfectly complimenting the off-the-grid realness.

34: @olomayasims/Cmomoney Smoking Mod Overhaul

The original smoking mod was on my first Top 50 list, so it's awesome seeing it get new upgrades, interactions & animations.

I've never smoked IRL, but sooooo many of my sims just puff-puff away; I'm such an enabler. U_U Now all we need is cigars and pipes!

35 - 38: Callia-Evergreen/Camkitty's CAS CC for animal hybrids at MTS

Not a "mod" per se, but whatever--my list my rules! I love ALL of their CC, but I get SO MUCH use out of animal-themed CC like the digitigrade sliders, wolf feet, lizard tails, and fae wings. Do check them out if you like to play with horror and monster-sims!

39: @greenplumbboblover's Sheep

EASILY one of the most incredible mods I've ever seen. Like....HOW? (Once @omedapixel's Goats are done I'm gonna start screaming someone do llamas pleeeeeaaaaase!!!)

40: Arsil's musical instruments mod

I used the sax most recently in my IWTV gameplay, and it was excellent, perfect for the NOLA vibes! However, although I use the flute A LOT more (for my Untamed gameplay--it's been such a GODSEND!), I really wish the hands were positioned better, preferably using the poses from Chisims' flute poseset. (But I don't eff with poses/animations, otherwise I'd do it myself. U_U) Ah well, it's still one of my fave mods though.

41 - 42: Flower Arranging mod by zoe22 + @mspoodle1's Florist Collection

Guys, I've been wanting this mod since FOREVER! ^0^ (I swear, the best thing about TS4 is all the 4t3 conversions, LMAO!) I just wish Teens could Dabble and use it, too--all they can do is stock the table.

43: Just Sit/Nap Anywhere by FloTheory

Sometimes you just want sims to fall asleep anywhere, DANG, EA!

44: @sweetdevil-sims' Toddler Food DR

Cuz EA's food is UUUUUUUUGLY~! I kept forgetting to install it, only to be rudely reminded every time I had to look at my toddler sims eating MUD.

45 - 46: @mspoodle1's mail pen quill DR and @omedapixel's pencil quill DR

I looooove quill pens IRL (ballpoint pens, not the fountain pens--I'm way too messy), so having mods that let my sims use them too is 👌

47: Fireflies Enhanced! by Canibal_MLO

I love anything that enhances the wildlife and collectibles/harvestables to be more dynamic and interactive. And I was JUST about to do a firefly catching scene for my IWTV insp. gameplay, so this came right on time! The falling leaves effect is delightful, but I kinda wish it was falling flower petals instead, cuz ofc I do. 🌸

48: Unicorn Aurora DR by Canibal_MLO

GORGEOUS. This mod replaces the unicorn mist with northern lights, like.... I love the genius ideas simmers have.

49: Custom Plumbbob Color tool by CrossTheMersey

What a neat idea! Although the default Maxis colors are ingrained in my psyche, with the iconic green plumbbob, as soon as I saw this mod I knew I wanted to at least try something different and play around with it.

50: @aa6x7's Teru Teru Bozu + other edits [Honorable Mention]

I rave about Cmomoney's Time/Weather Mod all the time, I use it constantly. AA6x7's Teru Teru Bozu (Japanese "Sunshine Monk" charms) is kinda like a simpler version of it, as it just resets bad weather back to Sunny. But it's such a cute idea and perfect for my gameplay. Plus, AA6x7 makes all kinds of neat edits/mods to EA's bulky AF meshes, so if you haven't checked them out already, DO!

And that's all the mods I've managed to try out recently!

I don't have anywhere near the kind of free time that I used to, so my simming has been put on the backburner and I've missed all kinds of cool and exciting releases. But trust: I am taking note, so that I know what to try once I have time.

Because he is a part of Void, there’s a very high chance he knew before hand, and doesn’t care…But let’s ignore all that!

I think that he actually found out quite early on, mainly due to any interviews that he would do to learn about his peers!

When he initially interviewed you, he did indeed address you as masculine pronouns but as usual, you didn’t correct him because you didn’t necessarily care.

But a few days later, he would end up seeing Yuri grabbing your leg as you dragged him along, clearly uncomfortable from the situation.

After helping you get Yuri off your leg, he put two and two together and realized that Yuri would only attach himself to you if you were a girl!

“Aha! Y/n? Does this mean that you’re actually a girl? What a scoop!”

i soooo recommend each and every fic, like its all SO good??? FOR WHAT??? so easy to read but her vocab isn't limited, and i just love that balance so much. everything is good. i recommend EVERYTHING.

but if i had to choose ONE, just ONE thing to recommend, it would be love again because i am a whore for best friends to lovers and this was the most perfect beomgyu b2l ever.

okay so i’ll start w physical appearance uhh i’m 5’3 and i have dyed red,wavy-ish hair (like wine red kinda) and i have blue eyes and really long eye lashes. i have freckles only under my left side of my face and i have an upside down smile. my style is kind of downtown girl/boho. i have dimples too.

💪 : What is your OC’s most physically attractive attribute? 

Liam - mmm i wanna say his eyes? They are very warm and earnest. And tbh i always imagine that his appearance as a whole is attractive, but kind of.. in a way where you can't put your finger on it? Cos he really is not built in any way that is remarkable, and his outfits are p generic too, but The Whole Picture just. fits. Also it's become a running gag with me and my friend that his arms are his sluttiest feature lmao (bc he rolls up his sleeves a lot)

Lilian - dem guns 💪. fhsfgfh no but really, she is well toned and she knows it, and i'd lie if i said she doesn't keep fit at least partially for looks. She has sharp features, which suits her well, and probably counts as p attractive. Personally i'd also say eyes again, because they're a curious colour somewhere between dirty yellow and warm amber, and they're intense, but much softer than you'd expect if you care to look closely.

🧸 : Into public displays of affection or are they more reserved?

Liam - is very reserved about any grander sort of PDA, but does smaller gestures like holding hands or sharing glances all the time. Smh he manages to be more obnoxious this way than if he simply made out in public (all his friends hate it <3)

Lilian - is pretty much the other way around - has no qualms being raunchy in public, but anything more tender or romantic happens behind closed doors; that's reserved for her and her loved ones only

They are both very chill about platonic PDA tho!

Liam - dunno if i'd call it courting per se, but he puts a lot of effort into showing that he pays attention to their needs and wants as best as he can But it's also a lot of just.. hanging out, getting to know each other, building trust. Liam is quick to admit interest but very slow about actually establishing a relationship, cos it's important to him that they actually Work Out

Lilian - she is Very Demiromantic and the first time this was relevant would have been with Isabela, however in that case it was practically the opposite of courting lmao. Lots of I Pretend I Do Not See from both sides, but hey, in the long run, it worked! xD

💌 : How would they plan a romantic evening for a significant other?

Liam - has learned the hard way that meticulous planning will never turn out how you want anyway, so it's basically just a plan of an activity or two that they can do together. Honestly most planning goes into making sure that they can Actually Do It, so, trying to gauge when the weather plays along, making sure that the place is free and that they have a means of getting there, and, in their dad era, that Addie is taken care of for the evening, stuff like that.

Lilian - will be sooooo sneaky about scouting out a cool place or thing to do, instigate a ""random"" trip/walk/date/whatever, and then """accidentally""" stumble upon it on the way. Omg can you believe there is a secluded grotto with lots of pretty fish right here? Oh look i think that is the fabled tavern with the best brandy on the coast! She is Very Bad at being subtle about it; it's something they both know but neither ever addresses, because Bela is charmed by it and they are both having a good time with it <3

hi goose this is a few days old now but finally getting around to answering this!

aaa thank you I'm so glad you like my descriptions :D it was definitely a bit tough getting back into the glass writing groove with the style I use for the descriptions and stuff so I'm glad it turned out ok

YEAHHH TATTOO TIME. every single time I see fanart of the tattoo I freak out (/pos) so much because all the interpretations are SO cool. I love seeing what people come up with because I myself have no artistic ability, I can only describe what's in my head through words, so when people are able to actually put that into art form it just makes me so happy

yes exactly that's why I wanted it on his pulse!! I wanted it to sit right over the reminder that he's human! that he has blood pumping through his veins! everyone has that blood and that heartbeat and I wanted the tattoo to sit right above that both because of the connection to his heartbeat, but also because it's the place other people can feel your pulse. it's the connection point almost between your pulse and others, if that makes sense.

(random fun fact, I can't feel my own pulse on my wrist. doctors and nurses can't get a pulse from my wrist either. like there have been many times I've gone to the doctor and the nurse has tried to take my pulse and they frown and readjust their hand and then they try the other wrist and no matter what it doesn't work and I'm just sitting there. the only place you can get a pulse off of me besides straight up feeling my heartbeat is on my carotid artery on my throat)

I plotted it out a bit before my trip, and I specifically wanted to finish ch 25 before my trip because I knew ch 26 was going to be the one I'd most want to write after I got back. I needed a REALLY good exciting chapter to come back to and the alternating format was going to be the way I sucked myself back into the story after being out of that headspace for 3 weeks straight, and it worked. it was just so cinematic in my head y'know? I can perfectly picture the flipping between past and present with like different color grading and lighting and music and all that

Where to start. So much to like this chapter. Jason being a hockey nerd, him being so captured by the skyline view…and poor baby was abandoned (just like canon) yikes. Also Nico’s thoughts are always fun, (I love how much he swears ) and I love how they both just admire each other. I don’t know much about hockey or sports in general but I’ve watched enough sports anime to see like the theme of the style or skill of another player making a person want to be a better player it’s a beautiful thing. Good job with this!!

I just came back from watching the Nutcracker! It was my first ballet ever.

I was surprised that there were so many kids performing in the show :o Pretty cool.

The first part took place in a barn and that was where Uncle Nikolai gave the nutcracker as a gift to Marie only for her and Misha to fight over it and having it confiscated by their dad.

Ultimate furry ballet by the way. The dancing bears are kind of iconic, we also had the horses, and then the mice towards the end of the first half.

The clothes of the townsfolk were so colourful and cute :3

I have no idea how the kids' beds were moving during the scene where the nutcracker came to life. Remote control??? Idk

Also each of the kids' beds had a kind of chimney attached to it out of which characters popped out and I was like ??? maybe the bed was moved so that it was right over a trap door.

Oh yeah the evil mouse king hehehe

Also live music hell yeah!!!!!! I enjoyed it a lot even though we couldn't see the orchestra because they were in the pit.

I really loved the dance with the snow queen and the two icicles!!!!!!! It was so beautiful.

The snowflakes were pretty too.

INTERMISSION

Sugar plum fairy :3 The people of the magic land were wearing these really extravagant red clothes, it was very striking.

The dances by the chocolate and coffee group were really fun!!!!! I think the coffee group was especially a hit with the audience. I loved how their dance style and their music accompaniment was distinct from the rest of the ballet.

There was some comedic relief with four chefs trying to chase down a chicken for the feast, which was set up by the duke and four other dudes.

OMG ok so there was this part where there was a shepherd and following her were a bunch of kids who were supposed to be sheep. They were all in cute little white outfits and there was one kid in a black outfit and they were SOOOOO CUTE T_T

There was also an adult sheep being chased by a fox who according to the program is supposed to represent shepherd's pie.

I was like *o* when I recognized the Waltz of the Flowers while the bee was dancing. I knew the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy but I didn't realize this other piece was also from the Nutcracker. Anyway, knowing the music makes the show even more enjoyable :3

I really liked the waltz of the flowers though!!! It was so much fun. There was the bee, there were four flowers that was made up of four duos (the ladies were the flowers and the guys were dressed in green as the stems I guess) and then there were eight more flowers. It was very pretty, I really enjoyed that part.

And then the nutcracker fell in love with the sugar plum fairy and they had their dance which was really great and then that took us to the end :3

The Nutcracker was definitely a great "starter" ballet. The story is simple and the set and costumes are so extravagant. The time passed by really quickly :3

Most modern ballet descends from Cecchetti, RAD, Vaganova and/or Bournonville, or in the case of Balanchine from both Cecchetti and Vaganova. Or in RAD's case from Marie Rambert - and she trained with Cecchetti. For my money Vaganova is my favorite but you can see the differences and blends in technique in most professional dancers. We all got trained somewhere by somebody. Cecchetti method is so excellent because it is standardized, it is absolutely methodical, and it incorporates all the anatomy you need to get it right. And in higher levels it grades mostly on artistry because by Grade Four you better have your technique in line, amirite? I apologize, kids. I get super nerdy and academic about ballet but I think if you read me at all you knew this. Oh look more pretty Jiminie doing some modern-y stuff that is pretty on his arms and OMG that lovely bit at the end, and none of this is Cecchetti like at all:

Regardless of school of technique, we all do get trained, right? We learn to hold isolations. Muscles go in specific spots and you hold them up or down or in or out or elongated or twisted like a dishrag (port de bras) or tight in a specific way. Angles are never in question if your technique is a solid one.

Just looking at Jiminie he looks a bit like a Russian. He does. The man is probably a Vaganova-method trained ballet dancer in my opinion, with Bolshoi big moves thrown in like English on a billiard ball. His hands are sooooo Kirov I just... gah. He's beautiful. I mean LOOK AT HIM: (He also has a bit of the Travis Wall going on in his contemporary but I suspect that's because Travis Wall is literally EVERYWHERE)

Which MAKES SENSE. The Korean National Ballet uses Vaganova in their academy but also has an exchange program with the Bolshoi. And Jiminie is a bit Bolshoi when he jumps and we know that the Bolshoi's training method is bigger and louder. So I'm gonna guess that Jimin's ballet teachers are probably Russian trained by way of Korea and looking at his technique that makes total sense. And his contemporary teachers are Travis Wall fans. Interestingly (as we know), Jimin didn't start out training as a dancer. He started out training as a martial artist. And that lends itself to a couple of specific things we see in his technique. One is his lower legs specifically from the knees down, including his feet. Guys don't train their arches the way girls do because largely they are not en pointe. They need their metatarsals for stability and their Achilles tendons for jumps and lifts. But Jiminie can have quite nice feet, we've seen him point them, we know it can be done ;)

The other is his barrel roll aerial (which probably has a cool martial arts name but I don't know it). Y'all know what I'm talking about. It's done in Tae Kwon Do and Kendo and Aikido and Kenpo as well as Goju-Ryu and I'm sure other disciplines. Jimin is a master of the lateral aerial and even uses a similar technique in his tours en l'air, angling himself forward and using his arms as rudders (which is a very Bournonville choreo choice but he leans for it every time). It makes for a beautiful rotation in the air. Tell me that man doesn't know his angles. Anyway anyway I have blathered on long enough, you got me over here just watching the man dance and running my jaw and not even addressing your original ask which: Yeah, I know. I'm sorry. I could run my jaw about Jimin's dancing for hours. Probably will. You asked though ;)
