mean girls (2024)

fine. FINE. it is time to discuss mean girls (2024) bc i can't stop thinking about it and i had a severe mean girls the musical phase in 2018 and 2020 two separate times. and also i took notes watching the movie last night. so now you are all subject to hearing them. spoilers, obvi. (under the cut, of course)

i think it should be noted here that i also have Thoughts and Feelings on the bway musical. so if anyone wants to know those... moving on.

it's a movie-musical adapted from the stage musical adapted from the 2004 movie adapted from a BOOK called Queen Bees and Wannabes released in 2002. now that that's out of the way:

the good:

the sets are so much fun in the movie. the musical is like. a few desks and tables and a bed that all move and then. screens. i missed real sets. so much

opening the musical with janis and damien recording the video in the garage and having their narration work like that worked sooooo well. and then of course ending in the garage was very fun.

speaking of janis and damien, these are my favorite versions of janis and damien. auli'i and jaquel KILL IT as janis and damien.

angourie's cady (acting-wise) is really good. really cute and naïve and it feels authentic as a transition from new kid cady to plastic cady.

i also don't mind the changes to apex predator. i think auli'i and jaquel killed it and i think it works! i like the choreo too where everyone is acting animalistic (re: this is Girl World in the og movie) except regina.

avantika and bebe wood are also really great as gretchen and karen. this might be my favorite version of karen. ily karen shetty.

LOVE this version of someone gets hurt. i love regina controlling the atmospehere around her and literally becoming the apex predator. the partygoers don't move unless she allows it, and even planning cady's reaction (which is. gayer than expected) is so good.

CONTROVERSIAL TAKE? i prefer the story behind the pyro-lez thing. i never liked the space dyke story in the musical and i thought it was weird (though i prefer them calling her a space dyke because it's supposed to be mean. ya know)

im saving this for this bullet point bc every other bullet point would've been about but i've been a fan of renee's regina for forever now, so being able to see it outside of broadway and outside of shaky bootlegs is a blessing.

after regina eats shit at the talent show, during the social media montage, you can briefly hear the intrumental version of world burn, and i think thats cool.

SOMEONE GETS HURT (REPRISE) you will always be famous. i am so sorry they didn't put you on the soundtrack

damien on the jazzy will forever be funny. it's better than the og movie. i will stand by this.

also the background/looming beat of world burn like a second after janis gets done singing + the looming threat of regina's revenge is very cool.

OH world burn is very awesome in this bc. duh. of course it is. but what really stands out to me is that it's like apex predator again where everyone is acting like animals and reginas above it all (bc she did this lmao). another thing is the transition between one of the high notes to regina fake crying in mr duvalls office. that was so slay.

the reginald joke is my fave in the whole musical and im so glad they kept it. it makes me giggle every time.

the bad:

i miss all of the songs. give me back It Roars, Where Do You Belong, the entirety of Meet the Plastics, the What's Wrong with Me reprise, FEARLESS! and Whose House is This, More is Better, and Do This Thing!! GIVE THEM BACK TO ME!!! PLEASE!!! OH my god and Stop. jaquel would've blown this out of the water i just know it.

i miss the jokes about mrs george and her boob job. that shit was hilarious.

i don't care for cady's pov in revenge party in this one. those who have seen it Know.

i also miss the "NO! THEY'RE BOTH IN THE COSTUME!" that shit killed me. absolutely hilarious.

the musical (bway edition) actually did cut some of the iconic scenes from the movie, but i think this movie would've benefitted from adding them back in. give me the "we should totally just stab caesar!" line.

i hate Rockin Around The Pole. so fucking much. i hate it in the broadway version and i hated it in this. i hate this song so fucking much.

chris briney. that's all. he's got about as much personality as a wet piece of paper. get a different aaron.

even the broadway musical is like, actually mean. it still pales in comparison to the og movie. this movie could have done a little more to stand out from the actual musical and the og movie. idk. it could've said something. but if you walked into this movie and expected it to say something then that's on you. sorry.

this isn't something that needs to be categorized but i miss cady's inner monologue. it's very obvious in the movie but she's even got these cute little asides in the musical that i WISH they would've kept. like: "it seems kinda bad to spy on someone, but they're the first friends i've got, and i don't want to have none." is so much fun and gives cady so much character and i love it so much. erika henningsen is my favorite variation of cady. she's believable as both nerdy cady and plastic cady. also she's so, so funny. (honestly i think they should've brought her back for cady's songs in this musical. sawry. i don't think they should've replaced angourie bc i really like her cady But.)

another cute and quirky thing that i like from the musical that isn't in the movie (because it would be really hard to pull off) is that mrs heron/mrs george/mrs norbury are all played by the same actress.

anyway that's all i have to say about mean girls (2024). in my (completely unprofessional) opinion, they should've literally just adapted the actual musical script if they wanted to make this so bad. or released a pro-shot with renee as regina and this cast or something. they should've gone all out campy musical with this one instead of trying to market it as a remake bc it's not Really a remake. like it Is but it's Not.

NOW onto the deets!! Sooooo okay they can tell that whenever you're around or mentioned Haley is ✨tense✨. I mean they are profilers! It esp goes down when there's a gathering at the bar after a case. You're there, as you often are (even before you started dating Aaron if you're part of the team) and just generally having a great time sitting with him.

And then Haley enters the same bar. She managed to have Jack handed over to her sister, being encouraged to "get back out there". But what Jessica doesn't know is Haley decided to go to the very same bar she was attending with Aaron with the team years ago. She had heard he was seeing someone, but now she knows he is. And boy... she is not happy.

You're younger than her for a start. Pretty. Real pretty. Definitely more filled out than she ever was, however. And Aaron has his arm around your waist, smiling gently and chuckling at whatever the conversation was being had. No, she didn't want to see him so-

So she decides to saunter into the bar, pretending she hasn't seen any of them as she orders herself a drink. As she takes hold of her drink she walks casually near their table, she knows they've spotted her now. And then she feigns surprise as she lets her eyes wander to the group.

"Oh! I didn't expect to cross paths with you all tonight." She says. The group offer polite greetings to her and she smiles and nods, then her eyes land on you. "Ah... and you are?"

You tell her your name. She watches as Aaron's grip on you tightens a little. She hums.

"I see. Well I'm Haley Brooks, Aaron's ex-wife. I'm sure you know my dearest Jack, yes? I'm his mother." She says smugly as she shakes your hand a little too tightly. You look uncomfortable, she enjoys it. Her eyes drift to Aaron, who's watching her with slightly narrowed eyes. "I didn't expect you to move onto someone so... hmm, how should I put it?"

"Haley." Aaron says. His tone is a warning. Haley narrows her eyes a little.

"I was only going to say they're young, Aaron." God, she enjoyed the discomfort from the way she said his name. You're looking at her with a certain look that suggested you knew she was lying about what she was about to say. No doubt you'd heard it before, she thinks. One of the others at the table clears their throat.

"Ah, you here with anyone tonight?" Emilia(Emily?) asks her. Haley shifts her gaze to the woman with dark hair.

"Mhm no. Just haven't had much time for myself recently." She knows her words sting. Good. You clear your throat and offer a polite smile.

"I don't mind looking after Jack sometimes if you and Jessica need a break. He's always a good kid when he's at his dad's." You offer and Haley breathes out through her nose sharply.

"That's funny, when I spotted you all I thought you probably worked as a babysitter. You certainly look like one."

Before anyone else can speak up, Aaron slams his glass down on the table and stands up, firm and tall.

"Alright, that's enough. I think you should go." He says sternly to her. Haley gasps, wide eyed.

"A-Aaron I-"

"Now."

In a spark of anger, Haley downs her drink in one and slams her own glass down on the table.

"Fine. I'll just have to try to find myself a ride home then." She snaps. She turns to leave, and from behind her she hears possibly Derek say,

"Leave it to us, Hotch. Stay with (Y/n)."

She never did get to see you again.

So, Em just published some BTS photos of the Doomsday pt. 2 music video shoot 💛.

I thought I’d take this opportunity to give my two cents on it, since a bunch of you have DMed me to ask (and I do love that I’m making friends thanks to this silly little blog) 🥰

First of all, I was happy that it wasn’t scrapped. Apparently, Cole Bennett wanted to take some time to get things right because he wants to « tell a bigger story » and it will « all make sense later » 👀 (can’t wait to see what that’s about)

Here is what I liked about the video :

- It makes the song even better

- Some of these shots are AMAZING (Cole Bennett is insanely talented - but we knew that already from the two previous mv he did for Em)

- Love love love the cameos 💛

- Em looks sooooo good. God please grant me the blessing of looking this good I if reach the age of 51 🙏🏻. I appreciate Cole’s efforts of making him wear a suit / shirt & tie in every video they shoot together 👀💛.

HOWEVER there are things I’m on the fence about 👀

- though the aesthetic is on point, I feel like the production is not as on point as the two previous music videos. I think they could have done more.

- it is a bit short (to be expected since the song is short - but I would have enjoyed an expanded version for the mv)

- they completely missed the opportunity of adding a girafe 🦒 and it would have been hilarious 🤡🤣.

i watched season 1 and caught up with season 2 of mashle in like a day and a half

blame bling bang bang born, that opening is so fucking catchy that i guilt-tripped myself into watching the anime because it didn't feel fair to stream without at least watching the first ep

i don't regret it this anime is like really fun im surprised

the casual eugenics??? everyone without magic is unworthy and deserves to die because it is unnatural and goes against the blessings of god?

you would think since lack of magic keeps finding its way into the gene pool and subsequent offspring these people would do more soul searching and question it!

I also think its really interesting how everyone suffers in the eugenics society, it is not just having magic, you have to have good magic otherwise you are just as worthless as the nonmages. You may hold yourself to a higher standard and think yourself superior but you are essentially still trash. Having magic isn't enough you have to be perfect all the time. Everyone suffers even the talented mages cause the slightest imperfection means you are lesser than dirt. You can't tell me this world is happy and blissful when anyone slightly out of the ordinary lives in fear of someone coming to strangle them in the night.

the story also acknowledges this there are tons of people who think they are superior to mash because they have magic even when they themselves are incredibly weak. like shoutout for commentary on racism and racial supremacy on how the weakest of people will act prideful and egotistical at the chance to walk over others.

i love mash, he's cute, i find his empty-headedness endearing i thought i would grow tired of his gimmick but I am pleasantly entertained. he's the realest guy ever

Ethan's fatal flaw is canonically, stated textually, that he cannot stop focusing on the One Person even when LITERALLY NUCLEAR APOCALYPSES are on the line. The entirety of Fallout is about this exact thing.

Like, this flaw of his was actively used by the villain of Rogue Nation to manipulate Ethan. the villain literally tells Ethan "yeah i killed this bystander you imprinted on bc i knew you would never get over it, lmao" its amazing how predictable he is

I LOVE HIM HE'S A FUCKIGN MESS. also his origin story from the first movie is he was being groomed to be a team leader but then his mentor went turncoat and killed Ethan's entire team, he's sooooo traumatized, Lottie

I cannot describe how in love I am with your story. It's sooooo well written - I cried for my MC's behalf 🫣 And I didn't know I could hate a fictional character so much (I'm talking about you, Sal)😆

Danzor is annoying with his blind support of Sal but I actually cannot blame him - my MC devoted to Irus no less 😃 But I like to think MC will tell Irus off if he'll make a mess of things (but still be there with him to take care of this mess). So I kinda wander - is Danzor devotion to Sal really blind or he does think she's not always right but he keep silence so she won't be upset?

And also - will it be possible for MC to be religious at first in childhood - you know, like faith being the only thing she has from mama - but in the end despise old (or any) gods? And in theory: we've seen Anu with her fire blade and it was impressive, but could MC refuse this blessing and still be a better and stronger warrior? Like "I don't need your gods to be good at wielding a blade and win against you😎"? Cuz my MC won't hear a crap about her baby Irus and she's ready to pounce at anyone who treats him wrong.

Oh, and also!! (Sorry for my blabbering, I'm just really excited for any crops of information about your masterpiece 😅). We know Rana is quite lonely child, but did she get bullied? Despite all hatred of my MC for Sal and her guard dog my MC wouldn't hesitate to protect Rana from bullies even if at first MC thought she don't want anything to do with Sal new family. And I would like for them to be close with each other, but I'm not sure if MC ready to approach Rana first after this disaster "dinner" unless her protection instinct is kicking in cuz right now she's too hurt by Sal to even consider getting to know her little sis. Do we have to be the one to take initiative with Rana (because I'm not sure she'll do anything, she's afraid of MC if MC was aggressive with her parents) or there will be some situation where MC can protect Rana?

Danzor is not blind to Salyra's flaws. He's learnt to bite his tongue about certain topics because he's come to understand that Salyra's mind can't be changed when she's determined to do something.

You're already able to change your beliefs throughout the story. There's nothing that will bar you from succeeding in the game if you don't believe or worship. The divinity stat simply opens up more choices/options to go about doing something but you'll still be able to be a warrior/diplomat/insert fun title here without wielding immense powers.

Rana wasn't bullied to the extent the MC might have been. At most, it was a few pointed stares or some teasing from the children of families who don't actually support Salyra. She's lonely, but not bullied as much as she used to be but that's more because Rana's learnt how to keep away from most children. She does have a few friends with the other children who live in the temple, so there's that 😅 I can't say if the MC will get a chance to protect Rana from bullies because of the plot structure, but who knows?

It's not 100% clear to me, but it was definitely around the September timeframe of the novel (the first time I read it, in ‘22). I mean, I’ve always liked him quite a bit (that voice, that tragic backstory, that Shakespearean flavor). But for whatever reason I didn't become obsessed until my rewatch last summer. CanNOT stop thinking about this man, the former king who has really just been a pawn his entire life; what he thinks, what he feels, how he's been going through the motions while searching for the one who betrayed him, yearning for a death that will not come for as long as he has. HE’S JUST SO SAD, YOU GUYS!!!!!

7. A quote of them that you remember

Every word that comes out of John Rhys-Davies’ mouth is SO GOOD, but the quote that sticks out the most is (of course) "KNOW her? I NAMED her." GODDDDDDD it's infinity good and I never get tired of hearing it, not even once (and since they use it in every relevant "Previously On," you hear it A LOT). It's ok though, because they 5000% knew what they were doing with that one.

Some other choice one-liners:

"I'm just… so... tired" is also top-tier delivery, and does a really great job of summarizing his entire existence since 1057.

"And I know how to read them" is such a sassy retort (and a GREAT callback to “Lighthouse in the Sea of Time”).

“For that matter… WHY ARE WE WORKING TOGETHER?” is sooooo *chef’s kiss.* Enjoy being a walking, talking meat puppet with your worstie for several more months, my guy!

22. When do you think they were at their lowest?

990-some-odd years is a looooong time to find your lowest point. Even though moments like Gruoch’s marriage to Gillecomgain, his first “death”, and the endings of “City of Stone” and “Sanctuary” were pretty low moments for him, I’m quite sure his lowest point was never actually seen on the show (centuries-long depression isn’t exactly Disney Afternoon-friendly). The day(s) he found out about Luach and Gruoch’s deaths were obviously waaaaay up there. I imagine he had a really rough time of it during the Black Plague, so I’ll say his lowest point was somewhere in there :C :C :C

I do hope he was able to enjoy the Renaissance a little, tho. I’ll bet he commissioned a lot of art.

What’s your favorite seasons for Santana, Brittany, Quinn, Rachel, Tina and Mercedes?

Ohh this is such a fun question! Thank you Anon xx There's such an urge to choose a different one for each because six seasons six girlies but I shan't. At least not with that intention.

Brittany - Season 6

Starting with her because it's sooooo easy to choose. Gosh, how I wish we could have had season 6 Brittany for longer. If only she could have always been here, blessing us with her confidence. I cannot overstate how much this is my favourite version of Brittany. I also think it's a good albeit brief season for her plot-wise, and though I hear the criticism that she set Santana up for failure by pulling that Alma shit, she meant well and goddam did she do it in a fun way. Don't tell me the Brittany who tells Santana's homophobic grandma that sex with her granddaughter is great isn't the best version of herself.

Tina - Season 5

It was that or season 4. Listen, listen, I know a lot of people prefer her in the earlier seasons but they're wrong because diva Tina who has stuff to do is superior. It felt like season 5 finally allowed her to not only be part of the club but honestly be the de facto female lead. And it's a bummer that she's but a guest star in season 5B but season 5A has some of her very best vocal moments and is generally when I think she gets her dues. There's Tina in the Sky With Diamonds, of course, but even beyond that. Frenemies, Trio! The girl is actually getting plot! So yeah I guess you could argue for season 4 but iirc she sings the most this season and is still sort of the butt of the joke but it feels less disrespectful because she is actually being featured. She's beloved.

Santana - Season 4

I swear I'm not doing the season countdown thing on purpose. Obviously I love Santana in every season and I'm a firm believer that if you don't love her at her season 3A you don't deserve her at her season 4. And I reject the notion that she peaked in season 4 in that she didn't continue to be beautiful breathtaking brilliant never been done before afterward. But with all that you don't love my fave like I do talk aside, yeah season 4 is probably my favourite for Santana. Ironic because she actually misses a lot of episodes but she just has such an Arc and goes through such a journey. I love how lost she feels and how vulnerable she is after the breakup and how hard she tries to be a good friend but how much she sucks at acting like a normal person. The writers should have gotten her to New York sooner and my god do I have other notes for improvement in terms of writing but Santana herself? Beautiful perfect baby girl. She goes through your bags and drawers and hugs and holds you while you cry. Season 2 is also a contender.

Mercedes - Season 3

Oh poor Mercedes gets such a chaotic season. Unfortunately I don't think she has a standout season because she never gets enough of a story but season 3 feels the closest to having an arc. There's a bit there in season 1 but it's lowkey and in B plots, and season 2 similarly feels like they mostly forget she's there. Now I very much do not appreciate the way season 3A frames her because season 3A SUCKS but she gets to take a stand and shine. She gets shit done, stands by her principles and herself, gets The Troubletones going, demands the respect she deserves. And then season 3B sees the love triangle thing with Sam which I'm not a huge fan of but it does give Mercedes character drama and even then she stays so principled. She ultimately gets many happy moments and her stardom gets kicked off. So yeah I just love to see her stand up for herself and work towards her goals while also not being left out of the romance drama, which on Glee equals screentime.

Quinn - Season 2 I guess

I simply refuse to consider season 1 her best. I think people who only like Quinn in that season must not like Quinn very much at all because she's constantly decentered during her own pregnancy and has so little agency in it all. It also feels, just, sadistic to say all that horrible shit happening to her was the best. Then again horrible things always do be happening when she's around. And I think my latest Quinn ask was exactly about the messiness of season 2 so clearly this season isn't perfect, either. But she has stuff to do, you know? It's fascinating to see her completely reject the pregnancy. She refuses to be the teen mom people want to perceive her as. She clings desperately to a sense of normalcy, nay, superiority, and it leads to tensions with Santana and a messy dating life and Quinn ultimately crumbling at the end of the season. So, you know, still sad shit, but my god at least it's not You're Having My Baby. My other choice would be season 4 but she's in the grand total of two and a half episodes and I just happen to project a lot into it.

Damn it's really hard to choose for Rachel. I'm going to sound like such a hypocrite because I explicitly said I won't just do the girl-a-season thing but here goes:

Rachel - Season 1

Like with Santana, I would once again like to note that if you don't love Rachel at her season 5 maybe you don't deserve her at her season 1. And I do really like season 6 for her, for example, but it's been so long since I've seen that season that it wouldn't feel right to say it's my fav for her. Season 1 Rachel is just such a delight. Again, I think there's good in her (and for her) in every season and it feels too mainstream to say season 1 but goddam. It's the popular answer for a reason. Rachel is so earnest and so over the top and so hilarious. But then she has these come-down-to-earth moments and especially when Shelby the devil comes around we see how she's just a lonely girl desperate for love. She's so so precious I just wanna wrap her in a blanket. And I hugely dislike the Finchel stuff but unfortunately, that is what it is. Lots of other great moments.

Again great question, hopefully good answers too.

Hey Dani. The new malec oneshot was everything. I expected it to be a crackfic but it was so nice and god I love Alec's pov. There were so many moments when I felt emotional and i kinda loved that alec felt left out bc he wasn't into the same things as everyone else. I've never related to him more that I did in this fic. Also the alec and clary bromance was so good! It felt very similar to their relationship in the books and the show.

Thankyou for writing this fic. I read it as soon as I woke up and it was such a great way to start the day. I had such a great day today and I spent it with my favorite people and felt very blessed.

but yes !!!! I felt like it was super important to highlight the fact that scar and mumbo left them alone. it couldn't just be implied, it had to be written out. you as the reader HAD to know that scar and mumbo made the choice to give them privacy. it was a thing of trust, of knowing immediately that this is That Pearl, the one grian believed he killed, and they needed that privacy to find each other again.

BUT, here, I’ll give you a quick scene I wrote about Pete and John meeting. It’s the least I can do!

“I’ve been hearing… stories.” Pete places his hands on the table, giving John inquiring eyes as he sips on his tea.

“What stories?” John asks, placing down his cup with the very picture of innocence plastered all over his face.

“About the young man from the Moon manor. Lord Keith.” Pete leans back on the creaky chair under him. “Rumors and tales about extravagant and lascivious parties he’s been throwing in secret right under the nobility’s nose.”

“Is that quite so? Can’t say I heard about such gatherings. He’s been nothing but a model student as far as I’m concerned.” John’s guilt-free smile doesn’t falter for a second as he speaks, and Pete’s brows furrow.

“You’ve been covering up his misdeeds haven’t you?” Pete asks straight and watches in frustration as John’s facial expression doesn’t budge an inch.

“Father Pete, I didn’t know you were so quick to accuse others.” John takes another sip from his tea, watching in visible amusement as Pete slams a hand on the small table between them.

“John, this is no joking matter!” Pete lets out a huff, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “I sometimes wish I didn’t, but I’ve known you for far too long and way too well to not be sure of the fact that you’ve been doing it.”

“Throwing such accusations at me when I came all the way here to bring you a gift.” John places his cup down once more and pulls a small, jingling bag from the pocket of his coat, placing it on the table in front of Pete.

“What…” Pete stares at the bag in confusion, then the dots connect and his sparkling blue eyes go wide. “John, what is the-”

“You told me last time I was here that you could use some financial assistance with your small church, since our dearest Archbishop decided to cut your funding due to your less than… orthodox teachings.” John was more than aware of the fact that Pete wasn’t seen with good eyes by the higher echelons of the church, with his sermons being outrageous at best. Some would go so far as to call them blasphemous.

Pete’s nostrils flare as he picks up the bag, undoing the small knot to reveal hundred or so gold coins. Pete’s eyes widen even more.

“John, where did you get that kind of money?” Pete quickly ties the bag closed, long fingers trembling just slightly. Simply feeling the weight of the coins in his hands already feels like a sin.

“The nobility pays very handsomely if it means their sons will behave like proper gentlemen.” John’s lips part into a small grin. “Even if my methods are a little unorthodox, much like your preaching.”

“Please, do not compare us in such a way.” Pete places the bag of coins down on the table, rubbing his hands nervously. On one hand, his church has been in disarray for the past three months and he could really use some help, as he had to rely on the few and far between donations from the small congregation that still attended to his sermons, God bless their souls. On the other hand, he knew more than he was comfortable with about the origin of John’s money, and it felt like a transgression to use such sordidly acquired funds to whip his church back into it’s former shape.
