Random Ahlf hours. Don’t know if these have been asked before but tumblr’s search function is trash so… Did Ahlf know about Rana from Salyra’s letters? If so, I assume that partially contributed to his reason for not wanting Salyra to contact MC. Like “Hm I’m not exactly great parent material here myself but at least I didn’t get a replacement goldfish for this weird little kid of mine and oof I actually care about them a little and oh yikes maybe love them and so maybe I should have custody so bye.”

I also don’t see Ahlf as a shoulder to cry on (lol), but I also imagine he’d be kinda pissed at Salyra for just wanting to pick back up with MC as if decades haven’t passed. Like in an Ahlf lives!AU I’d imagine he’s be probs fuming over meeting Salyra again with a new family just like the MC could be (on MC’s behalf, though- whatever fling/thing he had with Salyra is done and over by that time I’d imagine).

Ahlf did know about Sal and her new beau and yes, even Rana 👀 It was definitely a factor he took into consideration as to why he kept the letters to himself. Because I like to spoil stuff, here's a very tiny snippet from one of the Patreon side stories after Ahlf's found a letter from Sal.

So yes, Ahlf would definitely be against Salyra and her new family and would defend the MC from Sal if he could see she was overstepping boundaries with the MC.

A warning: ahead is a very very long essay-slash-ramble about Salyra, a character from Crown of Exile by @ramonag-if . I have a lot of thoughts about her complexities as a character as well as the tragedies of her relationship with the MC, so I figured I should just put them all into words before I explode. If you haven't read CoE yet, please do — you won't regret it!! Especially if you're a huge fan of complicated, "okay wow this hurts" family angst and heart melting romance. 🥹✨✨

Salyra is someone who possesses the self-created tragedy of a hero. When Salyra believes in something, she believes in it with her whole heart, and she'll stop at nothing to fight for it. She's... the hero that many adore, but hurts those closest to her, directly or indirectly. Like her family, who've heard nary a word from her for all those years, not knowing if she was alive or dead. Like the MC.

Salyra's sacrificed countless things for her cause, and those sacrifices sometimes involved the hearts of those who loved her.

She's willful. Willful and determined. Great qualities for a rebellion's leader/figure of inspiration; not so much for when you're trying to patch up a relationship with your child who had long thought you dead, and had suffered for it.

It's like she thinks that if she pushes enough, if she shows MC the depths of her sincerity, it'll make MC accept her after all those years. It doesn't. For certain MCs, anyway. It only serves to push them further away.

Right, this is going to swerve into more specific territory. I'll be going into a little more detail on my MC's relationship with Salyra. The relationship between Salyra and my MC just... fascinates me.

Salyra is the high priestess, adored by the people of Ishari. MC... is MC. They were discriminated, mistreated, and followed with gazes of spite and distrust in Cyre because of their Ishari blood. Once MC returned to Ishari, they were greeted with — surprise, surprise — even more gazes of distrust and suspicion! Partly because of their blood guard parentage, partly because of their loyalty to the exiled prince, etc etc.

You stare at Rana, suddenly conflicted with anger and betrayal. You never wanted a sister, you only wanted a mother. Rana stares at you, suddenly gripping onto Mama's arm and twisting behind her, as if afraid to look up at you. A look of disappointment flashes through Mama's eyes, but it is directed at you, not Rana. It is a look you remembered Mama using when anyone would upset you as a child and now, you find yourself bearing the full force of her frown. You would laugh were it not so painful to think about the life you were robbed while Mama evidently moved on.

"Avriel," Mama murmurs. "You are my son and I know that I have not always been there for you, but I would like to remedy that. We cannot gain back what we have lost, but we have time now to find each other again."

"I need to go," Mama murmurs. "Rana needs me, Avriel. So does Danzor."

For a moment, you catch sight of your mother, but she does not see you. After returning to the temple, she has washed and changed, the priestesses who had been chanting earlier, now crowding around her. Anu called Mama the High Priestess and you cannot help but wonder just how long she has been in Ishari.

It's these. These scenes. Salyra has built a life in Ishari, a life without the MC. A loving family, a figure loved by the people... this is all that MC knows of who Salyra is now. The Salyra presented to him is a hero. A golden existence, a light in the dark, fearless leader of the rebellion.

(They need you? What about me, Mama? Do I not need you as well?)

(Those who had looked at you with suspicion now look at her with respectful, even admiring eyes. Salyra has a life here. But you — you are just the same. You are an outsider still, whether in Cyre or Ishari.)

Avriel is genuine and soft hearted, but he has a spine of unbending steel. He is proud. All those years mourning Salyra, grieving for her, only to find her alive and well in Ishari and with a family that she so clearly (and here we have a peek into Avriel's pain induced bitter thoughts, because honestly, that sad and angry child from so long ago never truly left him) prioritizes over him.

It's like his life has been rendered into a bitter joke.

What does Salyra want from him? Does she expect him to come and go as she pleases, there when she wants him and gone when she doesn't? Is he expected to wait in the wings as Salyra tends to her new family, only playing the part of a loving son when her eyes turn to him once more? Salyra, his mama. Salyra, now the head priestess, looked upon with respect by the very people who had looked at him with such suspicion.

(^ Above is Avriel's current thought process. Yes, he's a real mess. Irus is having a hell of a time soothing him, as the usual gentle-eyed man is currently very much like a wounded cat with its claws out and teeth bared, eyes set in a glacial glint.)

And honestly, those words might be quite unfair to Salyra. We do not know what she's experienced. Not yet. But are the words left spoken and unspoken between mother and child always fair? I think not. Salyra's expectations of MC could be called unfair as well, depending on the MC you're playing.

I just. I just find this so tragic. Salyra is a deeply complex character. Her greatest strengths are also her deepest flaws. Ironic, how the qualities that made her a hero could be the very thing that chills the heart of her child. I remember you said that Salyra will wise up on how to treat the MC in a future chapter, but wow. The tragedy of Salyra being her own undoing and the detoriation of the relationship between lauded mother and outcast child is just. Wow.

Also. leaving this here because Irus + Nearly Feral with Rage MC is everything:

You nearly laugh, the bitter rage that has been festering beneath your skin like a swarm of wasps, threatens to erupt from your skin. Prince Irus settles a hand on your shoulder and instantly, you are looking at him, noting the concern in his gaze. All at once, the rage leaves you, until you can finally breathe once more.

The scars on her face are from a fight with Emos (however, unlike their 1st encounter, she was prepared & got him back just as well)

They had a good relationship with Ahlf; they felt sorry for him after learning he decided to live alone instead of with his family (his death hit them hard leaving them feeling both guilty & angry 😥)

She's a pescatarian (preferring to avoid non-seafood-based meat) 🐟

Despite starting out as "begrudged allies", Felize bonded with Irus during their travels & became good friends

Her eyes may at first appear to be pitch-black, but in the right lighting, their deep warm brown can easily be seen

After the destruction of Salt Bay, Felize decided to keep a little pouch filled with a sand/dirt/rock mixture on their belt (just in case 🙂)

Her preferred combat style is "combo" (favouring neither offence/defence)

Felize enjoys teasing Oren, but only when others aren't around/are unaware (they don't want to make it/him a spectacle)

She cherishes the new connections with her maternal family (especially Zikar), & will continue fighting to protect them

At 1st Felize was shocked/elated when seeing their mother was alive & well; those feeling quickly soured into betrayal/resentment though when Anu let it slip that Salyra had a "new" family (though they refuse to take that out on Rana since she's just a child) ... besides obviously feeling hurt, Felize doesn't know how to deal with it all (especially the fact that to their knowledge mama NEVER told anyone she WASN'T dead) 😔

After talking with Danzor & Rana, Felize decided that having a relationship with Rana was ALL that she wanted from this new "family" (especially after Danzor vehemently rebuffed her EVERY time she expressed negative emotions towards Salyra 😒)

In their letter to Zikar they decided to inform the family of Salyra's life in Ishari (her mother & brother deserve to know that she'd abandoned them too) 💔

When their divine blessing awoke they resisted it & lost consciousness

HEEHOO NEW(ish) WRITING PROJECT

The winter sun shone bright and warm enough to combat the bite of the breeze as it danced and frolicked through the village square, unheeding of what it rustled. Unheeding of the breeze itself, a pack of children giggled and chased each other in much a similar haphazard path, playing gleefully in the snow. Some of their parents played with them, joyously enjoying the clear weather and workless day.

All was well. All was ordinary.

Until the sky above the nearby forest exploded with sound and fire, a falling star plummeting directly toward a clearing several paces behind the treeline.

Until the small scouting party that went to investigate came back with a half-dead person who could not be human.

Until they revealed that the person was the only one to survive the crash of the falling star and went back with a priestess to attend to the corpses.

Until the village of Salyra was forever changed, that day in the midst of winter.

How would the RO and her Tier 1 Simp husband React to MC dropping one of the most Savage Roasts they ever heard on Salyra.

(For those who dont know what a Roast is its pretty much murdering someone with words in a humorous and sometimes harmless way but if where talking about Sal its mostly likely not completely harmless but its still humorous and some will most likely laugh at her expense).

In Chapter 9, you can tell Salyra you wished she died 🤣 So there's some nice savagery coming up.

Danzor: He'd rush to Salyra's defence and also make sure to comfort her if she's crying/hurt/upset.

Irus: He'd support the MC and their roast, and would make sure to check if the MC is okay if the situation is tense.

Elora: She'd pile on the MC's roast with a few of her own. She really hates bad mothers.

Oren: He'd try to diffuse the situation while simultaneously trying to calm/comfort the MC.

Anu: Anu would try not to react - it's a complicated situation because Salyra is her boss but she also doesn't want the MC to get hurt. At most, she'd try to pull the MC away from Salyra to calm down out of sight.

But I swear if she'll hurt our baby Irus I'm gonna throw some fists! My MC will totally go full feral mode for her beloved prince. Just when I thought my MC couldn't hate her mother more lol.

If Ahlf saw the interactions between MC and Salira, would he try to intervene? If MC is resentful of their mother for her absence. The way she rummaged through their belongings, etc. Can we get a little "what if?" 🥺

Ahlf, despite his many faults, would not stand back when it came to the relationship between Salyra and the MC. He would have taken issue in Salyra's actions because it's the same actions that drove him away all those years ago and that's something he won't want the MC to experience. He'd probably threaten Salyra to stay away and if that didn't work, he'd be a bit more direct in keeping her away from the MC like maybe running away to live on a deserted island with the MC.

That ask about why Ahlf hid the letters from the MC. My headcanon is that Ahlf found out the truth about what Sallyra had done (maybe even the fact that she moved on and started another family in later years) and he wanted to protect us from thinking our mother doesn't care about us anymore and also protect us from what she had done and her role in everything that ended up ruining our lives anyway.

I thought this was going to be a big revelation in the game, but I will just headcanon it now. Because who doesn't love sweet, sweet angst and misery in IFs

I can confirm that Ahlf did know about Salyra's new family - even the birth of Rana 👀 Let's just say that Salyra wrote to Ahlf a lot about what she was doing and considering they both agreed to part ways, she didn't see any harm in informing Ahlf about her growing family. The idea was that Ahlf would have returned the MC to her in Ishari to be a part of her new life and the life of her new family.

To be honest, I usually side-eye fictional characters that put greater value in their newly-established romantic relationships over their long-term friendships and relationships with family (unless they're abusive, of course). However, since my MC was alone in the world after her father died, she values her relationship with Irus above all else, including her long-lost family and definitely above Salyra.

With that said, I'm both scared and excited for Salyra's next revelation. Scared because I don't want to see Irus getting hurt, excited because I know you'll come through with all the mean options 🙌

That's good to hear! I wanted to emphasise just how alone the MC is until Irus whisks them off on a grand adventure. Even though the other characters and the MC's family are there, the MC, for the duration of the game, will always know Irus the longest compared to everyone else they meet.

You know I enjoy the harsh responses to Salyra a lot more than I enjoy the sweet ones, but that's how I felt with Ahlf as well. I'm just an angst lover, I suppose 😅

I teared up reading bc my MC realizing that Salyra has a whole life without her just hit me hard. My MC wants to love Rana but whenever she sees how Salyra looks at Rana and Danzor she just feels this bitter jealously creeping up. Rana has two loving parents and has known Salyra a lot longer than MC did. MC feels bitter when she sees them bc she could never have that with Salyra and Ahlf. When Danzor and Salyra said Rana was a blessing and MC asked “What does that make me, Salyra?” I had a few tears stream down my face. “Am I not a blessing as well? Am I a curse instead? A shameful past?” This is what was going through my MC’s mind. I’m gonna go run to Irus for comfort now bc I cried while playing

That's a completely normal reaction to have. There's a huge difference between the MC's upbringing compared to Rana's upbringing. A part of it comes down to the MC's mixed heritage, a part of it due to Ahlf being the MC's father and a part of it is from the difference in the way Salyra treats Rana than she treats the MC.

Run to Irus because he's more than happy to comfort the MC 😅 He's well aware of what bad parents are like and is more than willing to comfort the MC.

I read that Salyra is like "Irus got between me and my child having a relationship."

That lady is so lucky there's not a character equivalent of me in Ishari homeland because if she ever tried to say that out loud, it be shot down with a "Lady, you got between YOURSELF having a relationship with your kid; it's you, your behavior, and your guard dog booty call that's dissuading half of the MCs from developing a relationship with you and your family. Don't be blaming a third party for the family issues you helped create."😆

This is very true of Salyra as a character - she would rather blame others than blame herself for causing the rift between herself and the MC (even at one point, Ahlf). Towards the end of the game, she might slowly come to understand how her actions and her absence have hurt the MC, but by then, it'll be the end of the game so any healing the gap between them will be for you to headcanon 😅

Is zikar going to be for or against salyra?

I mean will he be happy that she’s alive, that his grandmother and father no longer have to mourn her loss…

Or will he be righteously pissed that she neglected her mother, brother and godsdamned child for twenty years!

(I mean who does that!?!?!?! Also even if ahlf said “don’t come near my child again they don’t need you in fact they hate you” wouldn’t you like idk wanna check that out in person??? And don’t get me started on the whole second family bullsh-)

Zikar is always going to be against Salyra for reasons that will be revealed in Chapter 9 👀

He's not going to be as understanding as the rest of the Vinia family about Salyra being alive and well, especially since he's taken the idea of being the MC's protective sibling role very seriously. If the MC is angry at Salyra, expect Zikar to be there as backup and echo every mean word the MC says 😅

Salyra was hated at that point of Ahlf sending the letters to her and didn't have the same resources as she does currently. That said, I think a part of her wanted to alleviate some of the guilt she felt by trusting that Ahlf was being truthful and that the MC was better off with him than with her since she left them at such a young age.

This made me laugh 😆 I don't think anyone will be over hating Salyra - even after the game ends. She's just got so many secrets that are waiting to be exposed 😬 wait for the final secret to come out, her hate club will more than double.
