Day 1 - When and Why did you begin to Ship Jilypad?  What makes you Ship it?

uhhh definitely can’t remember when i started shipping them but i think…and this’ll sound stupid lol…that it was because i really wanted more j/s and i wasn’t getting it anywhere else lol at that point, i didn’t quite care for lily bc i was so burnt by all those weird jily portrayals and the deified lily we get in gen fic,,,but once i actually started reading jilypad i realised how fun she could be. we definitely get some of the best characterisation for her on this side, i think, but i also could be hugely biased. she’s just…more fun, ykno? living her best life with two of the hottest guys the world!s seen beside her. also! it’s the only way i can see any form of lily/sirius working out and i think james deserves to have two people fully glomping on him. so. jilypad is what all of them deserve.

(i think…one of the first references to this was one of keira marcos’ fics where s was in a triad w jily but they were dead so it never came up so much—that didn’t stop the sheer heartbreak of sirius carrying on from bleeding into the story tho. it was so,,,,,hnghhhh)

very hot of the kitchen staff yesterday to fuck up every single thing ever. like yesterday's shift was fucking HORRENDOUS there was zero communication between the supervisors and the chefs and the kitchen was just super understaffed and my boss had me MANAGING the food pass (like yes im very capable and good at my job and hot and sexy and have spent so so so many gruelling hours working the pass that i can do it in my sleep but i am still NEW) with the only other person on it to help me being some 17 year old boy who has NEVER had a job before and it was his first shift (like he was nice and i dont begrudge it him bc we all start somewhere and god knows my first job i was a terrible worker but still he had no initiative for anything to do with the catering industry and it was a Very Bad Day to have a first shift). so the thing with the food pass is that the waiting staff are in their own sections right and they'll take the food orders and deal with the customers, BUT if you're on pass then you're the one who gives the customer their food, so despite not being the one to take the order or being the one to make the order, any complaints go directly to you and it's just super shitty bc you're like my brother in christ i have no idea what you're talking about. like a mistake in the order either comes from the waitress writing it down/sending it out wrong OR the kitchen making it wrong, neither of which i had any control over yet the staff on pass are the ones who get the brunt of it. like i had a good 20 orders come back bc the kitchen kept sending them out cold or making them wrong and complaints either went to me OR the kid who would then - naturally, again no hate to him - bring them to me and either way it was very much My Problem and i have never been closer to smacking a customer in my LIFE

#this one lady's food was cold and she wanted it sent back #and the annoying part of all of this is that i immediately want to hate on the customer for making my life difficult #but they were honestly in the right like where i work is super expensive you want to get your money's worth when you go #BUT THEN when i did the usual 'im so sorry ill have the chef remake it for you can i get you anything on the house in the meantime' shit #she just really dramatically put her cutlery down like 'no i think we'll cancel the entire order and go somewhere else >:(' like HUH #and it was so frustrating bc her bloke was reasonably nice like he kept acknowledging that it obviously wasnt my fault #but they still dont seem to realise that being angry and shitty with me even if it's not directed at me #while simultaneously three other tables are doing the same thing on a ten hour shift #is really fucking draining #like i KNOW it's not my fault but no matter how many times you're saying that #i still have to fix this bc your bitch of a wife is having a hissy fit over a sodding beef sandwich #and this one lady complained about her lamb and wanted the entire thing redone #and in the meantime my manager told me to get her a free drink on the house #so i offered and she - with the tone of someone doing ME a favour - was like 'oh just knock the bottle of prosecco off our bill' #LIKE WHAT? you cheeky fucking bitch i offered you ONE drink bc you're fannying about with your food #and you want me to knock off the £20 bottle of prosecco? piss off #like i need u guys to understand that when shit hits the fan in a restaurant it is almost ALWAYS either kitchen or management #who have fucked things up. but who is on the front lines? the waiting staff #and customers apparently dont have the thinking skills to realise that the teenage girls they're releasing their frustrations onto #actually aren't responsible for their meal #BUT there was a silver lining bc while kitchen and management stabbed each other the waiting staff really pulled together #like it was a real solidarity moment and made me really feel part of the team which is always nice when ur still Anxious and New #and one of the managers literally came over to me and two other girls at the end like 'thank you for being here today we needed you' #and that was just really nice #i also felt really accomplished bc it WAS shit but i also managed the pass really well like i couldnt have done a better job #like i know shit was hitting the fan but i knew nothing i was doing was adding to it if that makes sense? #doesnt justify the fact i only had a 15 min break on a ten hour shift but still. swings and roundabouts #hella slaves to capitalism

i watched the new season of black mirror and i feel like i would've enjoyed it a lot more if it was under another name. Like the name itself gave me expectations that weren't met but the episodes themselves weren't bad, some were great even. the new episodes seem to be less about the dark side of technology and more about the dark side of humanity, less sci-fi and more horror. just gotta accept that this is the new direction of the show and then i think i will appreciate the new episodes a lot more

one day i might want to make a master post with all of my AO3-user tips because (and this is a toxic trait of mine ik) i get REALLY irritated with a lot of ‘advice’ posts that just repeat the same basic information in a patronizing way without offering like... actually specific input. 

and i think ao3 as a whole is a relatively easy site to use you just gotta get the hang of it. in a sense i would really liken it to tumblr because one of the things about tumblr is that you can’t just join the site and then hit an explore page directly, that’s not really how this place works, you usually have to populate your dash with blogs. with ao3 it is significantly harder to just search up ships and works imo, it’s best if you already have favorite tags and how you do that is finding specific fics and then going from there and exploring in a branch off method. so once you use it for a while it’s extremely comfortable and remarkably convenient it’s just not really the easiest from the get go.

#nightmare.personal #i think a LOT of people talk about like. don't over tag. but idk do people know when they should and shouldn't overtag? #that's a specific thing i think about because. i mean TLDR i think when it comes to characters and ships #you tag them if by removing them from the fic you would lose a substantial portion of the fic's content #like a fleeting mention to a background character eh you don't need that #but if a background character is not directly pictured but is repeatedly referenced then yes i do say you tag that #though you can note them as being mentioned and i think that's a tag that filters into their main so #just helpful as an indicator #also as i was saying earlier you can tag pretty broadly #bc ngl there are a Lot of Really Specific Tags on ao3 but they honestly lack a LOT of tags that i at least commonly use #derealization and dissociation iirc aren't formal tags there so i kind of do my best to tag that anyway and then #clarify in the beginner's notes. notes are SO useful #i think when you approach something like a series of drabbles in one fic that gets a little more difficult to explain but #i think you can find a way to manage that too #it would just mean only tagging the most critical components of the fic or things that are sweepingly occurring #so like a several chapter dump of drabbles might warrant a whump tag if like 4/10 are whump centric #but if like 1 character appears in the background of only 2 of them i wouldn't say tag that #also having a table of contents chapter or very descriptive (non artsy) chapter titles + beginner's note is super helpful

#bugs are great but honestly I might like plants more #side note a really fascinating part of this latest trip to southern california was watching the biomes change rapidly over short distances #based on various environmental factors #like elevation temperature precipitation #like drastic changes #the mojave desert is at a higher elevation than the neighboring colorado desert #mojave desert is colder + harder soil -> difficult for some plants (cacti) to get enough water #mojave desert is full of yuccas and joshua trees with sparse cholla cacti (much more tho) #colorado desert has this whole section full of cholla cacti #the joshua trees disappear #and agave also starts growing #it’s super super interesting #other desert south of joshua tree national park was full of ocotillos #and then farther south you get into some wet mountains #wet as in suddenly waaay more greenery which comes from more moisture #the landscape over there is so fascinating I love it #oh there’s also torrey pine state park in the northern part of san diego #only one of two places (other is an island) that have torrey pines #which are specially adapted to low water environments and have little grooves in their needles to help them collect water from the air #it’s so cool!!!!
