The LAYERS needed in a modern/human Dreamling au. Some level of Endless family dysfunction, obviously. Hob's family can be be dead or not, it's all good. Are they old enough to have individually gained the awareness they are off-puttingly intense and should hide it a bit at first, or still in that "no, why would I need to Elsa this" stage?
Option A is both of them trying to play it cool, like "don't scare him off" except they so badly want to go from zero to sixty.
(Death and Desire have ruthlessly drilled Dream with flashcards about how to react appropriately in situations.
Desire: it's your one-month anniversary, what do you do?
Dream: [hesitantly] NOT propose?
Desire and Death, conferring, because that's technically correct but the delivery was suspect.
Death, encouragingly: Good start. And?
Dream: a nice dinner and maybe a walk?
Desire: well done!
Death: and for a three-month anniversary?
Dream: give them a key to my flat.
Desire: [airhorn] NO. RED CARD.)
Option B makes them the classic anecdotal "my grandparents got engaged within seven days of meeting each other and still are happy together".
(Death, rubbing her temples: so you met this guy--
Dream: Hob
Death: -- Hob, and within 1 day you gave notice to the Registrar's Office and figured out the best day to get married. And Hob agreed to this?
Dream: NO.
Death: oh thank go-
Dream: Hob SUGGESTED this.
Death: . . .
Dream: are you going to be a witness or not?
Death, 29 days later in the Registrar's Office, to Hob's witness: Is he sane?
Johanna Constantine, drinking heavily from a large flask: unfortunately yes, by all legal definitions.
Death: fuck
Johanna: [passing the flask over] if your brother's even a tenth as intense as Hob, they'll be fine. Probably.
Death, brightening: Is Hob that bad?
Johanna: You know how sometimes you meet somebody and think "oof, they're a bit much, best give them a wide berth"?
Death: yeah.
Johanna: Hob's like a camouflaged hole in the ground of muchness. Except he's done the hole up all nice and he knows that sometimes you just want to be left alone in the hole to sulk and rattle the spikes for a bit, and occasionally get a F&M hamper tossed in.
Death: [hmmmmmmm'ing approvingly]
Johanna, morose: the bastard.
In the background, Hob and Dream are pressing their foreheads together and basking in each other's presence)

Since apparently this guy is the easiest to draw for my brain, I present more Shinomori for @fractiflos' Middle May
Practice sketches and things Ive done with him in it under the cut
i also wanted to put some of my headcanons for him or stuff that just made sense to me
Hikage
birthday is in September, if I had to pick a day, I'd say the third.
Huge history buff, he strikes me as the type of guy that just knows so many strangely specific dates.
Also, you can kind of see it in the expressions practice but I HC his hair color was like light brown as a kid and just got lighter as he grew up. then he got OFA which rapid aged him and it didn't stop getting lighter until his hair was white. :/
Orphaned, I imagine his parents were killed in a protest which led to him joining Bruce and Kudou's resistance group.
because he used to work with Bruce I genuinely believe this man knows how to handle even the most bizarre of weaponry. like someone's confused on how to load a rocket launcher or throw a dagger and he's just ready to help. <-this for sure freaked out Banjo the first time he complained about not knowing how to use a gun and Hikage just pulled one out and did an impromptu lesson.
He knows, and is good at Widdling.
Cats v. Dogs argument comes up this man replies with squirrels or crows.
This may just be me projecting but, he's AroAce for sure. Man lives in the forest doesn't want to have to talk to anyone or have any romantic relationships? Be less relatable my guy.
bro has like a bunch of craft magazines that he just goes through. he has a dealer for this so he doesn't have to leave the forest.
He strikes me as an action movie fan
love languages would be words of affirmation, and gifts.

Ted and Lucy In The Rain
The part in The Hatchetfield Ape-Man where Konk freaks out over water falling from the sky is such a good moment because, if you stop to think about it, it would make no sense if Konk was actually real. The Hatchetfield Ape Man is an outdoor creature from Michigan of all places, he wouldn't be scared or confused by a bit of rain. At first it feels like a mistake on the Langs' part, a character oversight that just slipped through the cracks. But then the full story snaps into focus and you realize that it wasn't the Langs who messed up, but Ted. Lucy was just too blinded by her own hopes and fantasies to notice.
Great fucking writing.

our wings are our dreams , & on towards the sky ! / @kukyc !
some might find the aches & pains jolting through his body to be concerning - but , practicing under dedicated people like the top performers of kaleido stage , idolising those like layla hamilton , for riku it was to be expected . if anything , the more it hurt , the more it was a sign of a good day's hard work .
he's softened over time, most certainly , as has layla , with the presence of new people at the stage - while he still pushes himself to work hard , to perfect his acts as much as he can , he's no longer working himself ragged for the sake of perfectionism , at least not as much as he was .
it gives him time to take a breath , to sit for a few moments to rest before making his way around the stage , keeping a curious but mindful eye on others & their work . the stage , especially since the arrival of the newer recruits , has been livelier , brighter , a little bit less tense .
it's as he's passing by one of the practice areas that he spots vanitas , hanging by his legs from one of the trapeze bars - he must have been there for a while , as the trapeze has long since lost its momentum , but vanitas' gaze seems unfocused . perhaps he's zoning out , or maybe he's lost in thought ---- either way , it makes riku snicker , just a little bit , to see him jolt as riku presses a cool bottle of water to his cheek , the motion so sudden that the trapeze & its chains jostle with it ; if it were a less - trained individual , they probably would have fallen off the trapeze completely .
riku , at the very least , offers the bottle as an unspoken apology - though whether or not vanitas will take it ( or snatch it , might be more appropriate ? ) is another thing entirely .
" working hard today ? "
