Why can't we have a batman is the spirit of Gotham au?
He already is, in meta, in character, in theming. Him and the joker. He is so very built upon what Gotham is made of, and Gotham builds from what he needs in turn, the setting of his story.
What if that is the reason he can take damage that would permanently ruin a physical career and come back? What if that's how he's managed to maintain his no-kill streak to such an extent? What if that's how he manages to maintain such high maintenance and all consuming identities?
For the heart and soul of a city containing all extremes, the richest nobility and the lowest of the poor, the cruellest villains and the most compassionate heroes, orphaned children and ancient lineages, a city rooted in fear and madness and grit-teeth determination and hard won kindness, what better choice could you find than Bruce Wayne?
But what if he wasn't alone in that? What if Gotham has sunk to such a low because its spirit is damaged and corrupted?
For the heart and soul of the cruellest city in the dc universe, the most unrelenting and uncaring, the one that practically laughs at your pain and suffering as you try to make it through another day, what better choice than the Joker?

(Geralt/Jaskier hinted at; Gaelic folklore influence with 'I see dead people' vibes; demi-god-ish Jaskier and traumatised Geralt)
Jaskier latched onto Geralt because, ever since he was a boy, Jaskier had been able to see the manifestations of misfortune and death. They hang around people in the shape of twisted, gnarled monsters, with thousands of eyes, and horns, and curled claws.
Sometimes they appear as bent old men, their bodies curled and twisted beyond human recognition, writhing tentacles peeking from their threadbare jackets, or as translucent glimmers at the edge of vision, bisected with rainbow prisms, that vanish in the light.
Jaskier had seen many evil men surrounded by the creatures, because they feed on and magnify the deeds such men commit. Murderers, rapists, abusers: feedback loops of evil and darkness.
When Jaskier spotted Geralt in the corner of that inn, with the creatures skittering up the walls, swarming around the table legs, leering from the rafters, Jaskier knew he had to stop Geralt at all costs. He had never seen someone so saturated in latent wickedness.
Armed only with his lute and a pocket knife, his heart beating in his throat, Jaskier followed Geralt into the mountains. The least he could do was be there to scream bloody murder and warn the victim that Geralt was coming.
He couldn't have been more wrong. Geralt begged for Jaskier's life, handed over his coin, walked away with nothing. It had to be a trick. After all, Geralt was the Butcher of Blaviken. People whispered it behind his back, casting fearful glances. Jaskier would find the truth, even if he had to follow Geralt to the other end of the world.
What Jaskier discovered was a man with a pure but broken heart, who walked through the shadows and sought out evil because that was what he had been raised to do. He was condemned to it. A hero unrecognised, a good soul left to wither with pain. The trauma hung in the shadows behind his eyes and Jaskier couldn't add to it by telling him about the damned spectres.
So, Jaskier stared down the snarling monsters and chased them away with his music; he helped Geralt find moments of peace and worth beneath the stars. Sometimes, the monsters vanished completely and he watched the weight lift from Geralt's shoulders. Jaskier followed Geralt into every dark corner and made sure he was closest when the spectres gathered. He had never been particularly brave, but Geralt deserved a friend.
The penalty, of course, was that Jaskier happened to be there every time Geralt was beaten by destiny. He could be forgiven, perhaps, for believing that Jaskier was the harbinger of his misfortune.

Finally jumped into my Turkey paper so the worst (the utterly paralyzing anxiety before and then complete bewilderment as I read through 60 FUCKING PAGES OF NOTES trying to remember wtf I was even going to say) is over
Have literally just been going through the notes and putting stuff into a google doc as I go, waiting on structure to emerge as I do (and it's starting to come together now)
but since I took 60 FUCKING PAGES OF NOTES just getting through the first half already has me at 9.5 pages of writing for a paper that's supposed to be 25ish
(all of which, btw, explicitly ties the "New Turkey" agenda to Sevres Syndrome, Ottoman imperial nostalgia, and AKP attempting to turn the country into a one-party nation with Erdogan as its sultan-esque figurehead-- the outcome I proposed originally and which my professor told me wasn't "accurate," putting me into this backpedaling position in the first place. If it's not accurate, then he had better start buying stamps, because many authors in many journals for DECADES have been contributing their opinions to a large body of work that says is IS accurate, so he will have a lot people to set right.)
Also I already hated Erdogan but now he's personally responsible for me even having had to write this paper, so I'm gunning for him on a purely intimate scholarly hatred as well as international ethical/political one
