I saw a comment on the post-trial shortonegaming video that went something like this: "everyone loves Gonta, but no one respects him," and honestly, I think that's a great way to sum it up. They all love him and care about him, but they don't really take him seriously.

And it's noticeable in smaller things, like when almost everyone brushes off his comments about tiny bugs (and in bonus interactions he talks about it A LOT). But in the 4th trial this is even more obvious. They don't see him as a person who could kill for everyone's sake. They only see him as a victim.

Gonta is a very observant person with strong moral principles and a desire to be helpful. But mostly he's seen as a kind but very naive child. And this is a different, but really heartbreaking kind of pain💔

(Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember people saying much when he calls himself stupid. He does this a lot, but people often don't go out of their way to convince him that it's not true. They scold Kokichi when he says this about Gonta, but they don't say much when Gonta says so himself. Of course, I could be wrong, maybe I need to pay more attention to it next time)

Anyway, I really enjoy reading your thoughts about Gonta! I liked him before, but you made me appreciate him on a whole different level❤

I haven’t seen shortonegaming’s post trial video yet, but yeah. That’s a really accurate way to put it. Gonta has always seemed so isolated from the others, never having one close friend/ally for longer than one chapter. He was always appreciated and loved, but not respected as a person so never fully integrated into the group. Its part of why I think going from having a small group of people working with him in the student council to being completely by himself in chapter 4 (with his ideas always dismissed in this chapter, even if it was to stop him from sacrificing himself) added to everything he was feeling at the time.

And it SUCKS. Because as you said, nobody says anything when he self deprecates, only when Kokichi really pushes it in chapter 4. Even when Miu is rude to him in previous chapters a couple of times, nothing. Because they take his self loathing at face value despite the fact that he IS smart. He’s very thoughtful, observant, and brave. One thing that stuck out to me in trial 4 was Himiko defending Gonta from Kokichi’s accusations, she said something along the lines of “Gonta couldn’t have done all of that! He’s not smart-“ before getting interrupted by Kokichi with something else. Not only do a lot of them casually brush him off, but they also agree with his own judgements of himself without questioning it.

The only person who ever tried to push back against Gonta being hard on himself, if I remember correctly, was Kaito. Sometimes, when Gonta would apologize for something a bit excessively, Kaito would say “a man shouldn’t apologize so easily!” (Which isn’t exactly a good way to correct that but. Thank you Kaito for trying). The only other time I remember was that moment between them in the virtual world right before Gonta goes to kill Miu, where Kaito directly counters him calling himself stupid. But I genuinely can’t remember any other character saying anything like this. (If anyone else remembers, please let me know!!)

But yeah. It’s just so so tragic. And it’s why I think post game Gonta would be such a lonely person.

And thank you for the kind words q^q it makes me more happy than you could know to hear that me posting about Gonta has got people to appreciate him more. He’s such a special character to me and it’s so rare to find fanworks going into these parts about him

Cat among the pigeons

[Just a lil something set in the 1-year timeskip ]

There’s a cat crammed in a rat-cage.

Vex squints dangerously at the old halfling - Staffen, she thinks - presenting her with this catch. “What’s this?”

“Lady Vex’ahlia,” they say, and her irritation is immediately soothed by the title, “this cat has been slinking about the castle since its reclaiming. It has evaded capture - until now.”

“And you’re bringing her to me, because…”

Staffen adjusts the glasses on their nose one-handed - a touch difficult, with a growling feline spinning in the cage to spit at them. “As Grand Mistress of the Grey hunt” - Vex straightens further and does her best to maintain a small and not outrageous smile - “the beasts of the Patchwood and Whitestone are your domain. And, ah - this is most certainly a beast. She has killed several of the new messenger pigeons, even got into the henhouse.” 

Vex motions for Staffen to put the cage on her desk - a scarred thing, repurposed from the surviving furniture in the castle. Being so new to the Chamber, she did not want to waste funds when perfectly good desks were available to her. 

She then immediately shucks her jacket and throws it over the cage. The growling lowers to a mumble. 

“Why the hells did you catch her?” she exclaims. It takes a deep breath to steel herself - thankfully, Staffen hardly looks perturbed, as though they expect overreaction from nobility. “She survived the Briarwoods and now, what - you want to kick her out? Who knows how many mice would run the place if not for her. And those would be far worse for the stores.” 

They rub at their bald head. “I must note that, as you astutely said, the creature was likely present during the reign of those monsters.” Now their mouth curls into a pained snarl - all too common a reaction to the usurpers. It’s either exhausted relief that it’s done or vicious hurt and anger it happened at all. “How could any good, gods-fearing animal survive-”

“We’re animals too, darling,” Vex says. She fishes for some jerky in her desk - only Trinket’s good manners keep him out. “If Cassandra made it through those dark years alive, I don’t doubt this dear could, too.”

Without lifting the shroud of darkness, Vex slides an open palm of dried meat to where the feline protests are coming from. 

She shoots the halfling a very, very smug look over the cage and jacket as the growling stops and a barbed tongue rasps over her fingers. 

“I’d be a fool to fire such a diligent worker,” she preens.

It’s only a day or two later Vex is able to get Pelora (apparently a common name children give pale or ginger mollies in Whitestone - the daughter of Cassandra’s valet names her) to stop and enjoy some scritches as she pads by. Positive reinforcement is doing wonders for the poor thing - her ears are ragged ruins, her nerves even worse. Despite helping herself to castle fowl she’s skin and bones underneath.

It’s a delightful surprise, if not a betrayal, to find the cat stole her spot a week after their meeting.

“Percy, darling,” she calls as she slips into his office, a plate heaped with lunch for both of them in one hand. 

In an unusual turn, Percival is not pouring over some request for funding or aid or another. Handling citizenship applications from refugees looking to move to Whitestone in a more permanent manner had been the subject of much of his attention.

Which is why Vex made a point to show up and make herself subject of his attention, when she could. 

His head shoots up to meet her gaze, glasses most of the way down his nose. Percy smirks and brings a finger to his lips. Shh.

Curiosity piqued, Vex tiptoes over, silently setting their plate on a somewhat clear spot. She thinks that document can handle a few crumbs. 

Pelora is curled in his lap, purring. As if sensing Vex she opens her eyes - the fluffy mouser trills, flipping to show her belly. Her paws knead the air.

Vex stifles a snicker behind her hand. 

“She stole my spot!” she giggles.

Percy laughs hard enough to piss off the cat. She leaves in a huff, tail high. Vex, at least, keeps her word and seats herself in the space thus vacated. Percy’s such a pleasant shade of red when she does it - hard to resist kissing his cheek before digging in.

I’m halfway through final girl support group and,, is lynette autistic? Some of the other characters call her names of bad autism/disability representation (ex. rain man, forrest gump) as insults, but nothing she actually does herself screams autism to me, except maybe naming and talking to her plant (she got that attachment/humanization of objects babeyy) but that could also just be a trauma thing so ?? I’m on my second listen, and just finished But Daddy I love him, and it is so fearlessly arranged. i felt the “YOU, you should see your face” in the very end like a slap in the face because of the drums and the fury in the way she delivers it. The whole song is very theatrical (hello little mermaid I see u I luv u and all u symbolize), and walked me straight through the years long experience of defending whatever partner (that was functioning as self harm) I brought home to my parents and how parental reactions (and in Taylor’s case, the wider paternalizing public) reinforce patterns. It’s very Speak Now.

And I love how she leans into the symbol of “baby” and uses it to talk about the shame/scandal/sensuality of forbidden love but also the prize to be won at the happily ever after. What happens when shame and intimacy get twisted, and someone takes andvantage of that? or when the elders at town hall are a corrupt judicial system? We double down, we insist, and we exercise autonomy over the one thing we feel we have control over, ending a relationship. It’s all about the choice, it’s so so relatable. It reminds me a lot of Dolly Parton’s Down From Dover.

Spelling was not standardized in Shakespeare's England

yes this is my point. william "sex jokes" "historical RPF" shakespeare is broadly upheld as the pinnacle of english literature, and zero percent of his works conform to any standardized spelling/grammar system

"shakespeare couldn't spell his own name" is shorthand for "the snobbery of ~english literature & canon~ is both self-contradictory and arbitrary in the extreme." & to me this means that anyone can create whatever they want and be just as good as any shakespearean sonnet. bc the only real qualifier for "good writing" is that somebody cared about the story they were telling, and the only real qualifier for "good reading material" is that someone, somewhere, wants to read it

But like, yeah, this city has become such a dystopia tbh. Hard drugs in broad daylight on the sidewalks of upper class residential neighborhoods; a woman recently was knocked out and stuffed in a car at like 11am in the middle of a busy plaza; a guy was stabbed to death at around 3pm at one of the main bus stops. Everyone’s pretty desensitized to this too, so like, no one reported anything or did anything to help; it’s very much an oh-well-another-day-in-this-city mentality. 

All that’s being done is that they’re “clearing out” encampments and people off of the street, except like... where are people supposed to go??
