HERE’S THE THING

obviously we as the audience KNOW that Crowley never wants to be an angel again, that he’s done with both hell AND heaven, but that’s not what Aziraphale sees. Aziraphale has seen Crowley time and time again prove that he is not evil or wicked in the way Aziraphale has been taught to recognize it. Crowley got kicked out of heaven for asking questions, not because she was ‘evil’. He questioned killing people with the flood, refused to kill Job’s kids(the children and the goats), stopped Elspeth from killing herself. They have saved Aziraphale so many times that at this point Aziraphale takes it as a given. I’ve seen a lot of people talk about how Aziraphale struggles with black-and-white thinking and I completely agree. Which means that Aziraphale has been interpreting Crowley’s rejection of hell and ‘evil’ as thereby supporting heaven and its values. Also take into account that Crowley often attributes all of his negative traits to his demon-ness, ex. “I’m a demon, I lied” “I’m a demon, I’m not nice” attempting to separate himself from his identity as a demon. From Aziraphale’s (albiet flawed) perspective there’s no reason why Crowley shouldn’t want to become an angel again. Aziraphale realizes that heaven has problems, but if he has the ability to fix those problems and make heaven truly good (which isn’t possible bc it’s institutionally flawed) then there’s no reason why he shouldn’t try and make those changes. He still wants to do good and he sees heaven as the best pathway to accomplish that goal.

I saw someone else talk about how they’ve never seen each other without the backdrop of heaven and hell and they need to figure out which parts of themselves were their jobs and which parts are their intrinsic personality and values. I think Aziraphale probably categorized everything he liked about Crowley as ‘Crowley’ and everything he didn’t like about him as ‘demon’ and those two categories need some serious evaluation. They need to figure out who they are without heaven and hell and COMMUNICATE those identities to each other. The problem is that can’t happen until both of them fully let go of their institutions.
