i love you people who go above and beyond to be accommodating without you even asking. a while back I asked the dental assistant person if I could have sunglasses instead of clear glasses when I visit because the lights are too bright for me, and ever since she's made sure to give me the darkest sunglasses she could find every time. and today she--completely unprompted, I didn't even know this was an option--turned off the harsh overhead lights too, and like. I cannot explain how touching it is to have others make changes to help you instead of you making changes to yourself to make things work. i love it very much. so to those out there who put in that effort, thank you :)

JK Rowling’s books are a building. And she stopped after creating shitty, waterlogged, deeply structurally unsound bluebrints and half the scaffolding. Then left it to the elements (aka her Twitter), damaging it nearly beyond repair.
And the fandom looked at this, and put on hard hats. And they tore down that scaffolding, and took those blueprints and changed it into something that would work, and they built the most beautiful building you’ve ever seen.
The building JK Rowling designed was deeply flawed, it would never pass inspection, it would collapse under its own weight and lack of structural integrity within seconds of being built. The aesthetic design was tragic and hideous and offensive. But the fans looked at all of that, and said to themselves, “this building is fucked up, it will never be good if left like this, and everything about it is terrible and makes zero sense. But goddamnit, I have trauma and I can fix it because it must be done and no one else will.”
JK Rowling may have designed that original building. She may have had the initial idea. She may have built that unfinished scaffolding. She may have drawn those blueprints.
But this building is no longer JK Rowling’s.

For the fanfic passage game, what about this one from the first chapter of Socially Distant?:
“(She remembered when he said goodbye.
Tobin’s face was like someone watching their pet die but being forced to keep a neutral expression.
Gray thought it was because he was going to miss his best pal and teased him while reassuring him they could still meet online, but everyone else knew the reason was that Tobin had been crushing hard on Gray for years.
It was kinda obvious, really, but Gray somehow never got the memo and Tobin was too scared of ruining their friendship to confess to him.)
(...she couldn’t help but feel sorry for him, if only because she’d already been there. Kinda.
At least being rejected by Alm gave her some kind of closure, but Tobin didn’t even have that. )”
I’m interested to see what kinds of thoughts you had about parallels and the like, if you can remember any. If not, that’s okay too!
Sure, I'll try!
First things first, I've made no secret I believe Tobin has a crush on Gray because his early lines especially read a lot to me as someone who is both not interested in women and, if anything, is actually jealous of Clair.
And while Faye has her feelings for Alm laid way too bare, at least they're recognized by the latter and once he rejects her, she can finally start moving on, even if it's a long and painful process.
Tobin doesn't get even that. He never tells Gray how he actually feels about him and has to watch him gush about Clair in a way he never did and never will about him, his one-sided rivalry with Alm is never taken seriously and at the end he just has to accept he'll never be as good as him and- to be honest, he's often treated as the butt of the joke by the whole group.
I often go on and on about Faye's troubles, but really- Tobin's no slouch either. He might fare better because he's actually good with people unlike her, but I am positive there's a lot of stuff weighing on him he doesn't feel comfortable laying out bare, especially to his close friends.
