Here's what Phlox's room looks like without all of the shading. In future drawings, I'll probably add more blankets and plusses because skunks are known to he big nesters, and I love adding animal traits to my furry OCs. But, the blanket outside for him fits as well because he likes to go outside to read. His apartment room itself isn't that colorful bcuz it's cheap, so I imagine he compensates by decorating with a lot of bright colors. Also fun fact; he originally wanted to put the demiboy flag up, since they are a demiboy, but he didn't like the colors bcuz it was "too gray," so they put up the pan flag instead bcuz that still fits him.

Meet Aster!

Meet Aster! Aster is part of another story taking place in Thirotia, about a girl learning to become the Lynx Alpha (explained what those are at the bottom of this post, I swear it's not an omegaverse thing. But basically, they're spiritual leaders for each animal species, and each animal species has one, though some species might share the same alpha, like Crows & Magpies as an example). She's a Canadian Lynx, specifically.

Aster was born in the Arctic Biome (placeholder name), specifically the Boreal Forest parts. The Arctic Biome is already known for being a poorer biome since they don't have many resources, and lynxes arent that high of a ranking animal, so she struggled a lot. She grew up with her mom, Salix, learning how to cook and hunt to make money. Eventually, Arcane, the Lynx Alpha, decided it would be good to get anapprenticee bcuz he can't be alpha forever. In Thirotia, alphas gain apprentices by holding contests for their species, and whoever wins gets to be their apprentice.

Originally, Aster joined because they get a bunch of money if they participate, even if they lose. But somehow, she ended up winning, and now she's learning what it's like to be an alpha and how to become a leader, as well as learning the hidden history of Thirotia.

Thanks for reading this far! Honestly I'm super excited for this. Had this idea since third grade as an Animal Jam fic, and it technically still is an AJ fic because I use a lot of the same concepts, but I'm still very excited! If you have any questions, please asked me!

Meet Phlox!

Meet Phlox! He's an 18 year old Spotted + Striped Skunk who started working for Paxtom because he needed a job to pay for college, and the jobs he wanted wouldn't hire him, so he started working for Piers bcuz they pay seemed good and you didn't need much experience.

For context: the story is about a Possum named Piers who was sick of being a garbage man so he decided to start a business where they retrieve rare items.

Phlox grew up in a poorer part of the Plains Biome (that's just a placeholder name) with their family where he would sell shoes. They have an older sister named Antonia (Toni), who ur was and still is very close with. He wanted to go to college in Thirotia's Capital, so he ended up moving away from his family to attend. He looked for jobs, but no one hired him, but then he saw a flier for Piers's job. He got an interview, and he was hired.

Phlox is pretty shy and mostly keeps to himself. He doesn't go on many missions with them bcuz he has anxiety and freezes up in stressful situations, but he does go when it involves plants because he is a plant nerd.

Meet Arvin!

Meet Arvin! Arvin is a 21 year old dog (Border Collie + Australian Shepard), and Piers's roommate. He is also the co-boss (if that's a term idk), for their business, a free-lance group that steals rare items across Thirotia for money.

Arvin is one of the more laid-back members, and keeps Piers on track. Though, he does have his moments where he gets very stressed or angry, he tries to keep himself calm since he doesn't see a point in shouting. While Piers is technically the boss, Arvin acts more like a boss, if that makes sense.

Lore stuff under the cut!

I'm still figuring out Arvin's lore, but I do have some ideas. For one, ik that he is an orphan, and had to move out of the adoption center at 18. He was homeless for a bit, and he moved in with Piers to be his roommate when he was 19. But, this could change in the future!

For some random stuff, I imagine Arvin really likes a bunch of Indie rock bands and can play a bit of the Guitar and drums, but not very well. He also isn't very social and a bit awkward, but out of everyone in the group, he gets along well the most with people because he's calm and not loud or rude.

Meet Piers!

Meet Piers! Piers is a Virginian Opossum + White-Eared Opossum trying to start a business where he steals rare items throughout Thirotia for money. He works with Arvin, his roommate, Carrie, an old high-school friend, and Phlox, a young skunk who's just trying to pay for college.

While I'm still figuring out some of Piers's lore, I do know some stuff. He grew up in Fontveria (a mostly woodland forest biome which, fun fact, is the second most populated land biome in Thirotia) with his family. When he was younger, he learned how to pickpocket and strak very well so he could sell the items and help his parents out, which is how he is so good at thievery today. When he got older, he moved to Thirotia's Capital and became a garbage man. The job paid well, but he didn't like it and thought it was boring, so he decided to start his own free lance business with his roommate to make money instead!

Despite his ability to he sneaky, Piers is actually very energetic and outgoing and, compared to his coworkers, has a relatively positive outlook on life. But, he's not innocent and obviously is willing to do morally questionable things.

Also, those aren't gloves, that's just his fur color. The things above his feet are like shoes, but for animals who climb or have weird long toes, so you'll see a lot of animals like monkeys and squirrels wear them.

Meet Carrie!

Carrie is a rock dove and is for a story I've been somewhat thinking of. It takes place in a world full of anthropomorphic animals (the lore is cooler than this I swear I'm just building up the confidence to explain it BUT THEY'RE ANIMALS FOR A REASON) I have multiple stories that take place in this world, but this one is about a Possum named Piers trying to start a business where they retrieve rare items because he's sick of being a trash man.

Carrie was his high school friend. She ended up graduating college with a liberal arts degree, but ended up working a packaging job instead. She got sick of it and quit, found a poster Piers made on the side of a lamp post, and joined because she didn't really have many other job options and the only experience needed was being okay with some illegal activity.

Carrie mostly does their taxes, writes for them, and delivers their letters. On her free time, she likes to make art, smoke, and cook.

Also, she's transfem because I said so.

Oh, BTW, the other members of the main cast besides Carrie and Paxton are a skunk named Phlox, a wolfdog named Calyx, and I'm planning 3 other characters to add!

Dogs in Thirotia

I drew some dog refs :}

Anyways, I'm gonna ramble into the void about where they fit in Thirotia. Story and world is still in development so things may change, but here is what they are here and here.

Unlike a lot of other animals, who first appeared in the Garden of the Sun and Moon (placeholder name until I find something better), Dogs actually appeared a long time after that. They're descended from about 30 wolves who were kidnapped by lions and Gorillas for labour. The wolves ended up breeding and thousands of years later, Thirotia has dogs!

If you read one of the posts, you'd know about Thirotia's weird hierarchy. But I'm assuming most people didn't read it bcuz wall of texts are scary (I say while I make a wall of text). But for the tldr; Thirotia has a hierarchy that mostly consists of larger predator animals on top and smaller animals at the bottom. Purely social, and doesn't always follow the predator prey rule.

Dogs (as well as cats, hamsters, mice, rats, most pet animals, tbh) are at the absolute bottom of the hierarchy, being seen as pets. Because they're at the bottom, many live in slums and don't have access to things like medicine and contraceptives. Since the animals in this world follow the same birthing patterns as their irl counterparts, dogs have many in a litter, which makes more dogs, which are often put into adoption centers (yes this was inspired by Helluva Boss), which keeps the centers in business, so a bigger reason to not put contraceptives there.

Because of lack of medicine, dogs in this world are more prone to diseases like heartworm and rabies, so many of the places they live end up having rabid or sick animals. Dogs and other "pet" animals, despite being adopted and the animals adopting them legally being their parents, they are mostly referred to as "their dog" instead of their child.

Meet Pearl the Cat!

Pearl Moria is a 14 year old cat who was adopted by a rich lion couple when she was 2. She's very sweet but can be a bit ignorant to the situations and people around her.

In this world, there's a really weird societal caste system of animals, and cats are one of the lowest ones, being treated more like pets. They're also super common and have many kittens within a litter, so many kittens are taken to adoption centers. Unlike other animals there, like dogs, cats are more likely to get adopted by rich families because they're seen as "more elegant." The ones that don't get adopted and age out when they're 18 often join stree cat gangs or go into illegal jobs to earn money. There's a lot of class disparity between cats. Pearl is privileged and is mostly innocent from all of this, and her story is going to be about learning about her privelages and how others are treated, as well as even her own mistreatment she faces from her family.

Talking: Alphas

Note: No, this is not an omegaverse thing or an alpha male thing.

I vaguley talked about them in this post, but I wanna give more info on them. Also, this is like I highly diverges Animal Jam AU so some stuff will follow it.

In Thirotia, Alphas are the guardians of their animal's species. They're treated like priests, and they carry heartstones, the crystals that carry the essence of their species. If the heartstone is destroyed, the species is destroyed. I'll explain them more in another post. This is how animals like Dodo birds and Tasmanian Tigers went extinct. The alphas defend the animals from monsters as well as act as the animal's voices.

Note: Not all animals went extinct because their headtstone was destroyed! Many subspecies of animals share the same heartstone, so a specific group going extinct is usually a sad feature of a changing climate.

Some alphas protect their subspecies. For one, Rats & Mice have the same heartstone and they share one alpha, Piper. They share the same alpha because Rat and Mice culture has always been merged and having one alpha made sense instead if just having two. This is the same for Crows & Ravens, Pigeons & Doves, and Hawks & Ospreys.

But, animals with subspecies can have different alphas. While there is only one fox heartstone, there are three fox alphas; one for Fennec Foxes, one for Arctic Foxes, and one for woodland foxes. The Fennec Fox alpha (named Farah) also protects the Joaquin Kit foxes. There weren't always three fox alphas though. It actually started very recently, with the current woodland fox alpha, who doesn't have a name yet, thought that the culture difference between Woodland foxes, Arctic foxes, and Desert foxes was too great and she couldn't possibly represent all of them. So, she called for two other foxes to help her, and by definition, they are alphas as well. Farah only protects 2 fox species, Mirage (Arctic fox Alpha) only protects one, and the Unnamed Fox alpha protects the rest of the foxes.

The alphas are also given special powers that are passed down from alpha to alpha. As examples, Rat/Mice alphas have the ability to control bugs (basically the animals of this world), Eagle alphas are able to turn their feathers into flames, and Fox alphas are able to create illusions.

How Alphas are chosen

Bit of history to explain. The TLDR; Alphas were a thing started by a snake named Icarus and the gods punished him (and the first 2 animals which were like minor gods but not really) by making a thing called Icarus's Curse, which would make all the animals distrust each other in the garden/realm they were in. So, when it got really bad, the animals took a chunk of a gray crysgal the protected them, and left to make their own groups.

The leaders of those groups became the alphas. Icarus was the first one, and he originally made up alphas so he could try and seek forgiveness from the gods. While the gods didn't forgive him, they helped him survive and gain knowledge, and did the same to the other alphas.

How they got new alphas varied from culture. Icarus's friend, Ophis the Black Mamba, became alpha after Icarus. He made the rule that for snakes, anyone that wanted to be an alpha had to kill the current one.

Other animals were more peaceful, though. Doves decides that the alpha is an alpha until they quit or die, and then the citizens vote on who the new one should he. Eagles had matches like Roman Gladiators, but they didn't fight to the death, and the winner got to be the new alpha.

In modern times, the ideas of Doves & Eagles was combined. An alpha is allowed to choose an Apprentice, and apprentices are chosen using physical tests. Basically, they hold an event where anyone who wants to be an alpha competes in like a safer version of the Hunger Games, and the winner gets to be the alpha's apprentice. This has been criticized before, but many animals think this is the best way to prevent nepotism or unfair picking of apprentices.

How Alphas gain their Powers

Apprentices are given alpha powers when they're ready, which can take years of training. But when they're ready, the alpha apprentices go to sacred grounds for their species where there are statues of previous alphas and gods. They complete a ritual, and if the gods and spirits of the past alphas deem them worthy, they receive their power.
