there's something disappointing about falling in love with your fellow trainee, your fellow trainee who is also your best friend, your fellow trainee who is also a boy. he wishes he could rewrite time and not convince his mom to change his class at school, because then he would never have met him.

and now that sounds downright ridiculous, it can't possibly be that bad can it? i mean— falling in love with your best friend as a whole is an entire kind of situation that happens in books and usually has a happy ending. what's wrong with his best friend?

having conflicting feelings is normal, obviously, everyone experiences it when they have a crush, but wonbin didn't want to have feelings for his best friend, wonbin didn't want to have a crush on a boy.

y/n was probably one of the best people he's ever met. he's kind, and understanding, and beautiful, and humorous and pretty much attractive to anyone with two pairs of eyes, he's the perfect boyfriend material, he's just perfect.

and maybe that's what felt so wrong about having feelings for his best friend, intimidation.

well, wonbin liked to lie to himself.

yeah, that's the reason your afraid of having feelings for your best friend, your "intimidated" by his perfection, not because your scared of what others would think, other trainees, management, your parents, the world, that's not the reason your afraid of having feelings for him.

wonbin had never really spent a lot of time thinking about it, and he hates how he can practically hear the responses from people the moment he realizes his feelings for y/n.

they're staring at him like he's disgusting.

and what's worse than having people judge you? judge you for something you yourself can't control?

it's what keeps him up at night, those worries used to be planted at the back of his mind, because how would it even become something of relevance in his life? it'd never actually become real.

and maybe he's wrong for thinking such a way; after all, he can't just let others dictate who he loves or doesn't love.

but it's the thoughts in his mind slowly eating away at him that make him feel like everything's spiraling out of control. he can't date y/n, in a company like sm, in a country like korea, where if someone ever saw them together he'd be scrutinized and black-listed from the idol industry despite how hard he's worked?

it all makes him feel sick to his stomach.

how was he even supposed to tell y/n? he knew y/n wasn't homophobic but.. then there's the fear of rejection, he can't even imagine the kind of look y/n would give him if he found out. not out of disgust, but out of surprise, shock.

somehow, his mind thinks of every bad possibility as an outcome.

and just staring at y/n, sweet beautiful y/n who has no idea what he's fighting in his head, makes him fear confessing even more.

the two of them are already what i guess you'd dub "over affectionate". they do a lot of couple-y things like have matching rings, cook for each other, help run errands together, cuddle, steal each other's sweaters, cling onto each other like they were lifelines.

if everything stayed like that, wonbin would be just fine.

but of course, when has life ever been nice to him?

wonbin can't really stare at y/n without feeling like he wants to break down into tears and sob, they could be having the best time ever and he'll still have this overwhelming wave of sadness wash over him when he remembers his feelings.

it disappoints him in a way that it shouldn't..

and y/n clearly picks up on his sudden change. his flushed cheeks, mutters, and the way he seems to enjoy avoiding eye contact with him these days.

is his unusual clinginess noticeable?

wonbin usually isn't self conscious about things that like, but he guesses falling in love with your best friend makes you begin seeing things in a whole different light. he can't help but notice the uncomfortable shift in the air between him and y/n.

nothing has even been said.. so why is his anxiety through the roof?

wonbin finally snaps out of whatever dream he was having when he feels nails dig into his shoulder, squeeze them like his life depends on it. that's all it takes for wonbin to flinch, and he hates the way his reaction is so immediate, it's just more obvious that way.

y/n blinks, startled by the way he suddenly flinches. "you okay?" he inquires, and wonbin wants to kiss him so bad it infuriates him.

he shouldn't want to kiss him.

he feels like he's being pinched, and somehow he forces out a response; "yeah i'm just tired".

y/n doesn't buy his lie, it's evident in the way he stares at him for a specifically long time. "you should be fine".

wonbin pauses. "what?"

"your gonna debut, i wouldn't worry about it" y/n mutters, and he brings his knees to his chest as he rocks back and forth.

wonbin stares, hopefully not for too long, because then he'd just be looking too obvious and then y/n would ask more questions.

he really wants to punch himself at the moment.

he shouldn't feel so disgusted about being in love with y/n.

but he does.

Kara knew it was going to be a long day the moment her sister called her at 5 am, and asked her to help with a rampaging alien in town. She kissed her girlfriend softly on the forehead and teared herself out of bed, put on her suit and jumped into National City's sky.

It was well after 8 when Kara finished dealing with the aftermath, stopping to help the firefighters to take control of the area and clear out any debris. She made it to her office at eight twenty five, after a quick stop to shower at home, only five minutes short of her meeting with Cat. She shot Lena a quick message to reassure her she was okay, promising to make it to lunch and went in to greet Cat.

The meeting stretched longer than she liked. She started daydreaming about lunch with Lena and considered surprising her with some flowers just because, when her phone rang again with Alex emergency ringtone for the second time that day. Cat waved at her dismissively, telling her to "go save the day." Kara flashed her an apologetic smile and left.

She's only been to the new DEO a handful of times after she stepped back from most of her Supergirl duties. It was quite similar to the previous one, if only the Med bay had better access and less glass doors. J'onn and Alex were already near the big screen, styling the schematics of an old warehouse.

"What's up Alex?" She asked, making herself known to the group.

"It's about the attack from this morning." Alex said.

"Did he escape?"

"No, apparently this guy was a distraction. While you were fighting with him, there was a massive break in inside a large warehouse belonging to Lord industries. They were working on a special energy source that was far from market ready, which means it's highly dangerous." Alex used her serious tone, meaning things were worse than it seemed.

"If it was a distraction, did you try to interrogate the attacker from this morning?"

"That's the other thing," J'onn crossed his arms, his brow furrowed. "We identified him as a G'newtian, a very peaceful species that is more likely to give up than even attempt a fight."

"Then, why..?"

"We found traces of toxin in his blood," J'onn continued.

"He'd been dragged?"

"Most likely," He nodded. "We're working on an antidote, hopefully we'll be able to break him out of it soon."

"We are currently trying to locate him by searching for the energy signature, But we–"

"Director Danvers!" One of the agents cut her off. "We received a message that there's another attack near the pier."

"I'll take care of it," Kara announced. "You focus on the next heist."

"Alright, stay safe. We'll update you once the antidote is ready." Alex said and Kara flew out.

It was another G'newtian that greeted her at the pier, raging terror and destroying everything in sight. She did her best to hold him back, prioritising keeping civilians safe over taking him down. Nia joined in part way through the fight, using her dream energy shield to protect who she could. Kara didn't want to cause the poor soul any more damage than necessary, he was as much of a victim there as the rest of the people around then, if not more. When an agent told her the antidote was ready, she made a quick trip to the DEO balcony, leaving the young mother to make sure everyone was safe, took the antidote from the agent, and came back to swiftly stick it to his upper arm. It took a few seconds, but the G'newtian passed out motionless on the ground, ending the fight with minimal damage.

Kara just made it to the DEO with the G'newtian to let him recover, when Alex strode in, face furrowed and emanating pure frustration.

"I guess you didn't catch them?" Kara guessed, using a lighter voice to hopefully alleviate some of the tension. It didn't seem to work."What did they steal this time?"

"Power plant, they took the new L.L foundation's emergency energy capsule." Alex pulled up the schematic on the screen.

"They already have enough power to level the entire city with this thing." J'onn pointed out.

"You think they're building a bomb?" Alex inquired.

"There's a good chance for that." J'onn nodded.

Kara took a step back and let them continue the investigation as she checked her phone. It was well past lunch time, she quickly opened Lena's conversation to apologise, finding there a few messages asking her to be safe with little red hearts. She smiled to herself and pressed the call button.

"Kara! Are you okay?" Lena asked before she could even say hello.

"Yes, I'm more than fine," she tried to reassure her.

"Are you sure? Is there more going on? Do you need help?"

"I promise we got it under control, and if we need help, Alex will call you immediately."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, It's probably just another alien. I defeated many before."

"I know many aliens that are not 'just'."

"Oh, yeah? Anyone in particular?" Kara was grateful to break the tension with some light flirting.

"I wouldn't call you 'just'."

"What am I if I'm not 'just an alien'?"

There was a small beat of silence. "You're a gift from the stars, Kara."

Kara was left speechless, she wasn't ready for this kind of statement. Warm feelings spread throughout her body, giving her the energy she needed after everything she went through that day.

"Promise me you'll be safe, alright? We need you safe."

Kara nodded to herself and swallowed hard. "I promise."

"I love you."

"I love you, too

IDK if you've been keeping up with the Trujillo Blue Beetle run, but they put Jaime with some random Horizon girl named Oo'li and it really feels like some half-assed attempt to prevent him from ever falling in love with Khaji, I don't know, maybe I'm running on some insane troll logic here, but the writers really put Jaime with a girl who's connected in some way to the Reach, when Khaji Da is RIGHT THERE! Do not ignore please, I really wanna hear your opinion on this.

While I will agree that the relationship with Oo'li feels shoe-horned (and that detail honestly isn't helped by the breakneck narrative pacing, which may be reflective of a time crunch those involved with this most recent run might be dealing with), I think it's important to step back and take stock of some things.

The vast majority of comic writers-- and presumed comic readers-- aren't likely to even consider Jaime/Khaji Da as a ship because they're sharing a body. For better or worse, there are a looooooot of people out there (both in fandom and outside of it) who can't or haven't wrapped their minds around the concept of a ship where one character is the host body to the other; if they've put any thought into that kind of ship at all, they may have difficulty conceptualizing how a romantic/queerplatonic/committed relationship of that type can even work when the characters involved technically can't do things like hold hands, kiss, or sit across from each other while having a candlelit dinner. (Yes I realize that example may be a little cliche in this instance, but I think it's the best way to convey one of the big stumbling blocks for some writers when it comes to this kind of ship.)

It's fandom where these concepts have really been hashed out and played with, so of course as fans we're going to see the obvious potential and the ways it could work, but writers for officially published works generally should not read fanfiction-- especially of anything they're actively working on-- because doing otherwise invites the possibility that someone might feel their own work is being stolen and repurposed by a company to make money, which can lead to a lawsuit. Ergo, if they're not already familiar with the concept of how such a ship could work (or they haven't come to that concept on their own), then the chances of them even thinking to do so in their writing for DC is slim.

And for as much as Eddie Brock/Venom has put forward the idea of a host/symbiont ship more broadly in the public imagination, that reach is still limited by who would be interested in seeing those movies, and if those people were or are able/willing to recognize the host/symbiont ship as even being a possibility. And even if they did, Khaji Da is a dramatically different character than Venom in temperament and personality; we also have no guarantee that anyone looking at the movie/various-tv-series Khaji Da has been in will think to consider Khaji Da as a fully realized character instead of an AI-that-is-maybe-'sub-human'-in-personhood-but-more-advanced-than-anything-we-have-and-so-should-be-respected-as-'kind of'-an-individual (and the siri-voice in the movie probably won't have helped change that perspective). The point is, with that dramatic character difference, it might not even occur to any of them that Jaime/Khaji Da as a ship would be believable or that the characters could even have the potential motivation to share that mutual interest.

We also have no clue if Trujillo or anyone else currently working on Blue Beetle have seen any of the Venom movies to even plant the idea of a host/symbiont ship in their heads. We literally have no idea if they're even aware of the concept. And even if they are, they're in the business of trying to sell comics. I don't know the ins-and-outs of the comic industry by any means, but I think it's fair to assume that introducing a host/symbiont ship in canon might be a risky venture-- even without the breakneck narrative pacing they currently have going.

I'll be honest, with the current pacing trends I don't think they'd be able to do justice to the Jaime/Khaji Da ship in building it up into something that would make sense and have readers-- who weren't already-- get invested. Host/symbiont ships are a hard sell, so there HAS to be a believable buildup, but when the pacing's shooting by like the reader got fired out of a cannon and has to rapid-fire take notes about what they pass within seconds so they can only record the broad strokes and nothing in between, then all of that buildup crumbles into nothing. (Case in point with relationship buildup crumbling into nothing: the whole thing with Oo'li.) Physicality can kind of override some of that in a narrative, but that requires the characters to have separate bodies so they can externally interact and separate from time to time-- and Jaime and Khaji Da, by the very nature of what Khaji Da is, don't have access to that narrative override.

In terms of them trying to sell comics with the lack of decent pacing and time that DC is pushing, it's probably financially safer for them to not put the effort in to try for that kind of narrative buildup; it would take time they don't have to do it justice, and trying to force it anyway might lose them buyers due to said buyers getting put off by poorly done stories.

Yeah, as a fan to whom the possibility seems obvious and who is heavily invested in these characters, it's frustrating. I get that, and I don't blame you. But on the flip-side, DC has made plenty of wtf decisions of late (don't even get me started on the absolutely ridiculous number of Batman or Batman-adjacent books they're currently putting out right now, to the point where Bat-everything is drowning out damn near everything else), and with the lousy pacing and quick turnaround on comics they currently have going I'm honestly glad that they're not currently tackling a Jaime/Khaji Da narrative. I don't want to see what they would do to it at this time, I don't trust them to do it justice.

And speaking as someone with at least one fave DC character who has shown up in all of 94 issues total, sometimes you're honestly much better off looking to fandom and fanfiction for what you want to see. At least then you know you have a solid chance of seeing it done really well rather than getting hit with frustration or disappointment over not seeing it at all.

@thefaeriefeatherdark Sorry, I just haven't had either the time nor the energy to write up a response to your thoughts on the AU and I apologize because this is basically stream of consciousness and not edited, but a few things about my 3 Superboys AU, which thanks to Jon is technically 5 but another time.

Okay, the Superboy AU has actually gotten worse thanks to Leah Williamson (long story, but now we have two Jons). But to answer your questions as best I can given my limited Super family knowlege. Connor is a Cadmus creation, he is straight up the series origins. Made by Cadmus with Lex's funding with Lex's and Clark's DNA. The main difference is he is the first attempt at being cloned and Cadmus lies and tells Lex the clone had deteriorated once he was out of his clone tube. If you want to add Contessa to this, you could have her doing this to spite Lex. I know nothing about her besides what you said in your post, but I'm sure she has good reasons to be spiteful to Lex. And you know to try to keep and groom a Superboy on her own.

As for Lena Thorul, I know nothing about her, but since I am a fan of random characters from Kara's original series (I want that trade if it will ever exist), I don't see any issue with her being involved. My only issue with Kara in your idea, is I hc her around the ages of the original Teen Titans from the comics. At most a year younger, only because I think it's funny that Dick will call her an old hag even though he's physically older, but she's older than even Clark by a decent amount.

I mean all three are Clark and Lex clones, so they will look alike, but as Connor and Kon do have other's DNA mixed in with them (Maik is the only 100% just those two's DNA), they're can be variation. I think Connor looks distinct enough, it could have just been the cartoon style, but he seems more muscular and taller. He's more of a football player, while Kon is more Baseball player in terms of general build (it's a very bad description, but the best way I can explain it without drawing it, sorry). And Maik is 12, he's baby shaped. But he's basically built thicker than Jon, but not really by much since again, babies. Connor doesn't have the earring like the other two do, but I think Maik in terms of appearance does get mistook as Kon's younger brother since they look a lot alike. Maik has much better fashion sense though, cause is it Kon if he is dressed well? Maik has the gray eyes from the movie cause they're very striking compared to everyone else's bright blue ones. I also just like grey eyes and there's not a lot of of them in comics. So Kon and Maik will look alike and will argue about who stole whose look, but it comes down to just their age and clothing. I think Maik will end up looking a bit more different when he gets older, but I think those two will resemble each other the most with the eyes and fashion being their difference sadly. As for their outfits, don't they all need those super awesome jackets? Connor sadly gets his black shirt and pants, it's boring, but you know which Super it is when you see this. I did liker Kon's outfit in Kelly's run and YJ98, but Maik's would start out as the same as in the movie, but I think he would keep a more subdued coloration in his outfit. I also think as he gets older, he would make his costume more punk-rock than just spiked shoulders. I'm not sure how exactly, but I like him having a music industry plant type of idea behind his creation and so I want to incorporate music styles into his older costume if that makes sense.

Well, we have how many Flashes now? It should be fine, right (laughing in DC's inability to give codenames to established heroes for mantle passing)? They would get new codenames, but I haven't thought that far ahead yet. Also their names would have to use some of their personality and stories (Nightwing coming from Clark's story, Troia coming from Donna's stay on the Greek Moon planet thingy, Tempest coming from his water magic, etc.). So that would take a bit to get a good codename for them. But them and both Jons would evolve into having their own codename. Kara at last could go for Superwoman (since as far as I know there isn't one running around (watch me be wrong and there's like 5).

Oh, I completely forgot about Matrix. I want to say since the goal of this AU is to give Ma and Pa Kent the biggest amount of grandchildren, I want to at first instinct say yes, but from what I remember about that, it's still just Kara just merged with another. Also, I just didn't enjoy the bits I've seen of it. But since I haven't read the whole story, I'm not going to say definitively no, but that was just a weird bit of Supergirl's history to me, but not enough for me to just, "yay, no" it. If you want those, ask me about Nightwing XD.

As for the "it's gotten more complicated" it might actually be more fun for you, since you like the paternity bit more, but again I haven't had a chance to read Kon's solo yet (I've been reading from the beginning and I haven't made it to Superman comics yet and until the 90's, there's not really any writer who I'm just going to skip (I can't with Dixon anymore. He can write good plots, but he's such an awful garbage person and it bleeds through too much for me. And actually between him and Fitzmartin, I almost started to hate Tim, but one of his fans actually helped me with that), so I still have awhile and time is a dick. But to the actual point, Connor is the first actual clone, but he isn't "alive" to the world as Contessa is keeping him a secret from Lex and so Lex decides to cut his losses and tries again and that's how we get Kon, but Kon on top of Lex and Luthor's DNA also has Westfield's DNA in the mix. So he'sd the first clone the world gets to know. As for where Contessa and Cadmus is storing Connor, I'm not 100%, since I really, really hated the clone tube, so they probably have a facility underground that they "trained" him in so that he would be perfect for their nefarious schemes. He 100% will keep Wolf, I don't know if it would be from an Outsiders' mission or a one off mission with the Titans, but he's getting Wolf. And I'm fine with him on the farm, the Supers can come and go from there and since it's centrally located, it's not a bad place for him to join up with others. He doesn't have flight, but he's fast and can jump. Also he can get the stickers from Lex again and one of the heroes could probably figure out a way to replicate them without the addiction issue, there's enough scientist to figure it out. I know absolutely nothing about Indigo, but as long as she isn't going to take him to the Legion of Superheroes I'm fine with it (still bitter about that arc with Kara in the show, it just never sat right with me). But I do like your idea of him staying at the Outsiders HQ until Clark invites him to the farm. I think Connor has more of a relationship with the Kents than Clark, because Clark just doesn't know him and after Kon doesn't know how to deal with this new, but older clone. And he has to deal with raising Jon, so he can't just drop everything to help raise this kid he never knew existed. I think it makes him more understandable than what YJ did with him where he just came off as a prick. The powers are right, the heat vision and cold breath aren't as strong as Clark or Kara's, but that can be enhanced with the shields and that's ofc where the flight comes in as well. I do think he has the most strength out of the three in terms of raw physical power. Kon's TTK though obviously wins in terms of actual strength.

Now, because I just want to make things over complicated for no reason, I get you like cybernatics, but as I'm not a big sci-fi fan, when Maik was being cloned, in an attempt to see if they could remove the kryptonite weakness, they had some red kyrptonite in the room where they were cloning him. He still has the weakness, but instead it warped his Kryptonian abilities to an extent. So for example, he has heat breath and frost vision. His superstrength isn't as strong as the others, but (thanks to your boiling water Kara thing), I think he has the strongest durability out of the Supers. This wasn't meant to contradict you, I just think it's funny Kara doesn't want to get him hurt, but if he's not around kryptonite, the kid could get punched by every other Super at full strength and he'd barely feel it. He's still strong and could punch a hole through a solid steel building without a problem, but he's losing the arm wrestling contests. He is also the one Lex had the most see-over on though so he is the smartest since he was basically being taught by Lex approved tutors and that. He also since he actually is the one clone that "got to be a kid" and if the aging thing was retconned, I'm fine with it, he started out as an actual kid, so he and Jon actually are one year apart (Jon's a year older, kid Jon, not teen Jon, as I said it got complicated, but another day), and he would have absorbed some of Lex's "morals", so he could have a good character arc of growing out of that greed inspired mindset and learning to see humans as humans. I do think the Danvers would be a great set for this. The Kents would be too, and they 100% get to help with their grandson, but the Danvers had Kara, who was a teen when they adopted her, with (depending on the timeline) good or bad Kryptonian ideaolgies and previous connotations on Earth and its inhabitants. So they have more experience with that than the Kents. Also, since he and Jon are essentially the same age and Maik starting as an antagonist, that would be a good start for them since it would give a chance of kids figuring out things and influencing each other and given what Jon has been through, it's not like he's 100% rainbows, unicorns and sunshine. He's been through the ringer, possibly more than any other Super, 3 years under Ultraman torture will do that to a person. More so, being left for dead and having to watch that person living your life. But yes, as Kon would have YJ and Connor would be best (for me personally) for the Outsiders with helping out the Titans and YJ at times, Maik would fit in perfectly with the amount of child heroes that exist right now. He might feel redundant if he joined up with Damian and Jon and the people I have on their youth team I have, but what's the harm in having two supers? But even excluding that fact, there's a large amount to make a team out of. And heck, he could even start on my Damian team, butt heads with him (not hard to do) and take a few with him to make his own team and get some of the others Damian couldn't recruit. Even more fun if it splits up the West twins so Wally and Linda have to listen to who has the better team at dinner at least twice a week. And for villains, they would have to fit a theme for him to grow, so if I were to write stories for him, I would want to figure out a good balance for that. I would have to think of a few examples, but someone targeting him for being Lex's son, clone, "hero", "weapon" wouldn't be bad, someone who isn't able to control their actions for one reason or another, I think an evil Toyman would be good to as well, a villain who wants the spotlight (like Punchline, but not as annoying, sorry I just don't like her), he'd be very good for a social media type of villain or a eugenics villain. There's potential for others, but for villains, I think the moral theme for the story should come before their gimmick for a good story (can you tell I'm a batbrat?).

As for the DNA samples, I think it'd be a cute story that Maik and Jon are wanting to be the babies (the twins come in after this so it's all pointless), and also just worried that since Cadmus and Lex both have had access to controlling all three clones, with each one being a stronger control (Maik even having a microchip just in case that Kara made inert whether through Kandor or heat vision, doesn't matter, but one of those), teaming up and Jon using some lockpicking skills he get from Damian and Maik knowing the layout of the building, breaking and entering and destroying the DNA samples Lex has and scanning the building for anything he could possibly use for more DNA and eradicating it. It doesn't even have to be a stressful comic, just a fun little one of them having fun destroying untold and unsolvable property damage to Lex Corp. Everyone wins. And I'll give you this for the cybernetics and Lex being more involved with him, we can give him electric touch. So he could be a human taser or stronger. Lightning has been shown able to incapacitate the Supers, so it wouldn't be a bad thing for Lex to put into the one he has the most control over, until he defects. But now relooking at the timeline you gave me, I don't know if Contessa could have been around for all three cloning attempts. If so, Maik could be the one she doesn't lie about to Lex, but if she couldn't have been in charge for Connor, the pettiness isn't needed. But I do like them lying to Lex that Connor was a failure, so when he finds out he's still alive and functioning, he tries to be a "good" dad with the stickers and to give him resources that Connor knows better than to accept after the incident with the stickers.

Untitled Wednesday Library Series, Part 135

I owe a guy (my thesis advisor) some stuff (a thesis proposal), so you'll forgive me for taking it a little easy this week. <- That's what I'd say if I were taking it a little easy this week. Instead -> Triple feature!

Two weeks ago, I promised some coffee stuff, which I intend to deliver. I'm not so brave as to think I can meaningfully cover three whole papers; my aim — to whatever extent I have such a thing — is instead to highlight a trend in The Literature. Probably interesting, likely consequential, currently free to peruse via the links below. In no particular order, let's consider:

The How(s)

You'll note these all have the same first author. His official affiliation is given here as RD2 Vision, a company he founded after leaving CIRAD (the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development, which supports "French science diplomacy" in "tropical and Mediterranean regions"). He was also the Chief Scientific Officer of World Coffee Research in 2018 and '19. Quelle surprise. The industry is huge, yes, but the world is small.

I only know about him because of some digging on Faris Sheibani (a co-author of all three papers), who showed up an awful lot in coffee-related media around 2020 and '21. He and his company, Qima Coffee, make a lot of hay about the uniqueness of Yemeni coffee, and also — quelle surprise — the potential expansion of specialty coffee supply chains into Yemen. Things have developed a bit in the last couple years, and I can't help but think of these papers while looking on.

The Text(s)

In the same no-particular-order as above:

SSR analysis! Principle coordinates analysis! Hierarchical cluster analysis! Daring today, aren't we? Not exactly novel methodology for genetic clustering, but to novel ends: characterization, more or less, of C. arabica's diversity in the (major) center of its broader domestication. Damn good evidence supporting current understandings of historical coffee migration, and reason to be curious about the plants in the area now.

SSR analysis and principle coordinates analysis, yes, but also some of that Monte Carlo shit. Turns out the names currently used by local farmers aren't especially good instruments for genetic clusters; region works better. Not news, maybe, but a new way of showing it. Probably the first time it's been published with quite this much vigor.

SSR. PCoA. Some other stuff. This is mostly them setting the stage for 1. and 2. — less refiend, maybe, but the tone is pretty excited. Practically bombastic, and it's no surprise given, y'know, the whole thing. More on that in a bit.

The Object(s)

Don't love the choices they made with the maps, but Figures 4, 5, and 6 are very pleasing.

These cluster charts could be great. They are not. This also suffers even worse than 1. for what I assume are Agronomy's wacky thin margin specifications. Bad to look at.

That neighbor joining tree in Figure 1 is positively mint. Don't care about the rest at all.

The Why(s), Though(s)?

In part because I think these are interesting on their faces. In another part, they're interesting because they illustrate in new ways several of The Industry's old impulses at once: having lifted coffee from Yemen and made its production a colonial project, the agronomical powers that be come back for seconds; threatened now (actually or ostensibly) by climate change and disease with the collapse of heretofore productive suppliers, there's hope for respite in "underexploited" genotypes; there's ample precedent for positioning Yemeni coffee as special and exclusive.

In fact it is special and exclusive (outside the immediate region, anyway) for a variety of genetic, geographical, and political reasons. None of those qualities are noteworthy in and of themselves; most plants have them to some significant degree. It remains true that the situation is (once again or finally, depending on who you ask) ripe for capitalization on a larger scale. Coffees from the populations in this paper are already available more broadly in (e.g.) the US. I haven't seen as much penetration in European markets, but then I'm not very plugged in anymore. Thank fuck. Maybe Japanese and Korean importers are ahead of the curve; they often are. Where the money comes from doesn't matter to producers since they aren't seeing much anyway. Especially not there, especially not now.

The point is that you — yes, you — are likely to see coffee labelled Yemen eventually. It might be a while, and the texture of the market will be different then, but these papers will be part of the reason. Maybe in five or ten years, having not heard of or thought of me in three or eight, you'll realize I had a bit of a point. I wish this was a harder game to call.

I'm so upset about these ugly-ass greenhouses the neighbors put up. They're HUGE, 2 stories tall, and there are going to be more of them as time goes on.

The neighbor is a commercial weed grower, and besides the horrible smell and loud noise coming off these things 24/7, they just look like utter shit and spoil the peaceful forest vibes I grew up with. I don't even want to think about all the glysophate and whatever other chemicals they're dumping all around them.

I know some of you are probably rolling your eyes, but you know what, get fucked. My family lived here for 4 generations, I grew up on this piece of land, and you'd cry too if an industrial yard suddenly popped up beside your house. I'm allergic to weed and the smell wafting off these things makes me feel so shitty some days I can't even go outside. They're building more greenhouses as we speak, so this will only get worse with time.

This spring, I plan on planting a row of fir trees and hollies to cover them up. Hopefully it'll dampen the noise and smell a little too.

...Except it'll take 10 years for the trees to grow tall enough, and I'll most likely be dead by then. FML.

Venting about personal stuff because fuck this city

oh i am so fucking mad

we live near a creek that was dug super deep for drainage. It's beauiful, big trees and tons of wild plants. You can also find multiple species of snakes and birds that live there as well as a like 20th generation of raccocons. The city technically owns it so they throught it was a great idea to bring out an industrial grinder and kill literally everything back there

so no more fireflies, they're numbers have dwindled already and this year was probably the last time ill see the very few left in populated areas of the state

and they're leaving all of the limb mess for us and the other home owners to clean up

just throughing 30 pound branches into our yards going "yea thats your problem now. Maybe the city will pick it up sometime in november"

we dont even know why their doing this

if its for better drainage then their fucking dumbasses because all that growth is what keeps flooding from reaching our house and disappearing after a day

maybe they'll add rocks to stop the erosion but i find that unlikely

it looks like a hell scape now, just saw dust and empty pines left

and they're also killing fruit trees and plants the residents planted over they're fence with literally 0 care

i had elephants ear growing because it needs shade and lots of water, now thats gone

i cant let the dog out because a fly away branch could literally hit and kill her

we have old disabled folks living along the creek, they cant remove the mess alone

whats even worse is that the pine trees they left behind are close to 300+ years old. They're going to die because of this. The squirrls were already desperate, pulling up the bark for what i can imagine is either sap or bugs. Now they're gonna be super desperate. That and the undergrowth is what kept them alive

ABOUT

hae here was born the middle child of three boys, his younger brother, deul, was the star of the family or so everyone thought because he was so creative and outgoing and bright and generally loveable. eutteum was the responsible one always taking care of his younger brothers, the practical one with his feet firmly planted on the ground. by contrast hae was the brother who struggled with severe anxiety and either had his head in the clouds or his nose in a book.

no one ever really made hae feel badly about these things but even though he was just as artistic as deul most people thought if there was going to be a celebrity in the family it would be deul. however it was haeoreum who got scouted at age 13, at of all places his school talent show. haeoreum loved singing and dancing but he'd never thought about being an idol so it took him some time before he decided to accept the casting offer.

he moved to seoul and became a trainee at fine music media where he trained for four years before being put in a duo with another trainee, it was originally meant to be a full group but it eventually became clear that they really shined as a duo and so it was eventually decided to just debut the two of them

2une debuted in 2015 and were very quickly loved by the public thanks to their cute and bright image, they lasted three years before it all came crashing down. see, while hae and the other boy shined as a duo they did not get along very well together and their arguments were very frequent and loud

well as it happened someone recorded one of their worse fights and released it on the internet in early 2018. it was cut in such a way that it showed haeoreum in a very unflattering light and his groupmate in a better light. netizens came down extremely hard on haeoreum and ultimately 2une disbanded and hae's contract with fine music media was cut early

to put it bluntly 2018 was truly the worst year of hae's life, he almost decided to leave the industry entirely but ended up just quietly enlisting instead

the two years that haeoreum was gone from the industry changed things though as his groupmate found himself in multiple attitude scandals basically because of this the public turned new eyes on the 2une scandal and few anonymous employees from fine media music came forward to defend hae (which yeah he was a bit annoyed that they hadn't in the past)

all this was enough that when he came out of the army he surprisingly had a few solo contract offers, he eventually took one for a relatively small label called planetairy music and his subsequent solo debut blew up

in short his life has been a series of surprises and reversals and poor haeoreum has just been kind of along for the ride

PLOT IDEAS

the other member of 2une (would have to be born before 1996). what he's doing now is up to you, however, his solo career took a massive hit in 2020 due to the narrative being reversed on him to favor haeoreum instead.

other idols that hae has promoted alongside, they're friends mostly because of proximity

younger idols who are still firmly convinced that hae was the one in the wrong and his groupmate was in the right and therefore have no love for hae because of that

More ab the art school au:

I was thinking about Nanami and at first I thought he could’ve been in packaging or industrial design(bcs of the whole corporate salaryman thing) but the more I thought about it and his cursed technique the more I think woodwork would be a good option for him(lots of measuring, lots of physical work) . In this au I think he quit art for a while because he realized how much the academic art world was draining him and everyone else and realized how awful the industry can be so he went on to have a normal job. But you know what sucks more than being forced to pump out art quicker than you can manage? Being forced to stare at a Microsoft excel sheet for 8 hours a day. So if he went back and became a teacher at the school, I think he’d be teaching one of the “normal” subjects (math or history for example) but would still let students ask for art advice he has.

I actually haven’t thought about Yuuta as much but I think he’d do amazing ink illustrations(he’d be a dope tattoo or manga artist), so I’d say he’d either be in fine arts or graphic design. His drawings are mostly black and white with just a small pop of color and he’d use a LOT of cross hatches and lines. I think at least a few people asked him to design their next tattoo for them.

Since you mentioned Dagon, while I do think that sealife and the cycles of life would fascinate him and he’d definitely incorporate that into his work, what I do think would intrigue him more is the fear of the ocean, how vast it is, and how little we know about it. I think he’d do amazing mosaics using things he finds on the beach like seashells and stones,( Kind of like the thing you mentioned with Hanami combining art with actual plants) which he gets by foraging on the beach for a few hours every weekend(and that’s also why his house has sand everywhere). I think he’d also love the fucked up looking fish at the bottom of the ocean. He’d also love doing very large murals and mosaics just because it helps emphasize how massive ocean is

Nanami: okay no so I'm thinking about what you were saying in the other ask about the parallels between the art world and the jjsorcery world, specifically the working conditions. And thinking about Nanami getting burnt out, but then going to a place where he has no creative outlet and he's getting just as burnt out anyway, maybe worse. Like if he's going to be overworked at least he's going to be somewhere he can get paid to create and have resources supporting that. I can just imagine how soul draining it was to be somewhat cut off from that.

I love him being a math teacher thoooooo :) he has such high school math teacher energy. Not like Gojo who has PROFESSOR energy, but tired button up and slacks hs math teacher teaching the same subjects over and over again trying to get kids to understand trig and geometry and logarithms. I'm just getting so nostalgic for my old hs and cc math teachers lol, they're so silly.

Also it would be so neat if (like his cursed technique) he just had a knack for eyeballing measurements and getting them near perfect when woodworking. And I wonder if nobara would like to be mentored by him......

Yuuta: awwww I love Yuuta as an illustratorrrrr. reminds me of my lil emo friends and me in hs drawing on anything and everything and honestly making some pretty cool designs. Always black ink or pencil haha. I love to think that he would be designing tattoos for his friends, and then maybe just kind of get a reputation, like his skills getting around by word of mouth and he starts designing for a lot of people.

I also can imagine him doing a series of stylized portraits of his friends. Do you think he still would come into the art school pretty depressed & lonely and then make good friends? Is Rika around?

But just note that I detest love triangles where the 3rd person gets hurt so that's why in this au our handsome Scotman is Phillip and not Michael. Now back to the au

Colin enjoying his life man whoring around for 8 years and trusting that Penelope is only his bestest of friends. Penelope who long gave up on the idea of being more than friends having a buisness trip to Scotland for two months which make Colin realize he literally can't live without her, and wants to date her.

And then when she comes back, just as he's about to tell her he finally figured himself out she... Introduces him to the guy next to her

"Colin, this is Phillip" she points to the most handsome scotman ever "my fiance"

"Phillip I want you to meet Colin, my best friend"

Cue Phillip Crane the husband of every girl dreams introducing himself as Penelope's fiance. Yup, apparently Penelope and Phillip are intellectual soulmates who met at some literary symposium for writers. He writes about plants she writes about people. They're both introverts, they both like the same music and hate the same food. They prefer mountains over cities, would rather read than go to parties, Phillip is practically Penelope in a different font.

And he's convinced that Penelope is the perfect woman for him. So he proposed. Penelope is riding the high of having a handsome smart man so interested in her so she's obviously daydreaming that they'll be happy together.

And she asks Colin to be her maid of honor. Since Eloise refuses to be part of what she calls 'the consumerism of the wedding industry' and would rather ride the wedding wave as a regular bridesmaid with Penelope's sisters.

Enter jealous Colin trying to ruin Penelope's wedding, the Featheringtons + sister husbands (all of them) being over the top, the Cranes being over the top (Phillip's elderly parents, grandparents, maiden aunt, brother, sister in law, and their kids). Colin having to enlist his brothers for help sabotaging Penelope's wedding. Bachelors Benedict and Anthony giving him bad advice that always makes things worse

And of course since Penelope and Phillip's schedule never aligns, Colin goes with Penelope to pick out her wedding dress, wedding lingerie (to sleep with another man! This is torture, pure torture), he picks out the cake with her, the venue, the favors, he helps her write his wedding vows. It's like he's planning his own wedding with her.

But everytime Colin is about to confess his feelings. Someone interrupts or Penelope herself brings up how much Phillip will love everything Colin picked. Because her fiance is so much like her remember. Phillip likes everything Penelope likes.

Colin becomes even more determined to sabotage the wedding and even organizes the most disastrous bachelorette party.

Meanwhile her bridesmaids are having the time of their lives hating him (okay so maybe he did stand up Genevieve for a date, but that was one time he didn't know she was Pen's friend) and watching him make a fool out of himself (Eloise, Kate and Felicity stop laughing dammit)

In the end Colin gets himself banned from the wedding and does this grand gesture where he runs to the chapel to confess his feelings because he can't watch her marry that man. He gives all this heartfelt speech and Penelope can't take it anymore and confesses her feelings too

After Penelope tells Phillip that she can't marry him when she really loves Colin and runs out of the chapel with him. I like to think that the fiance gets a happier less heartbreaking ending in this au. Sort of like the end of Enchanted.

With an after credits scene where Eloise is trying to comfort Phillip with a 'you were just not right for each other, you're too much alike, it's all right Phillip' which turns into an impulsive 'You know what, we can't let all this money my brother spent on the consumerist wedding industry go to waste'

'The situation is kinda hard to fix, unless you want to marry me right now'

'Sure, I'll marry you'

And Phillip goes like 'Really you'd marry a man like me?'

'Yeah what have I got to lose'

'then let's do it'

And the story ends there. With all signs pointing to a sequel that follows the plot of another favorite chaotic rom com of mine 'Wedding Daze'

An: I still think that Penelope's fiance should be Michael, but I feel like in any au if Michael Stirling was serious about liking her, then Penelope would actually fall inlove and ditch Colin

So don't hate me too much for picking the man she's most incompatible with as her fiance.
