once upon a time, when I was in the process of calculating death stats, I was chatting with a friend about it and they asked me who the most innocent player in 3rd life was. an interesting question, but first we had to define what "innocence" was.

in the end, we decided that "innocence" was, more or less, "goodness." it was primarily based on whoever had the fewest kills, but to narrow things down further, other factors would be considered. did they ever try to kill people? were they loyal to their allies? did they steal? cheat? grief? who truly didn't deserve what happened to them?

according to that definition, the most innocent player in 3rd life was Jimmy. as you all know, he was also the first one out.

on to last life. Jimmy is out first again, yes, but someone actually narrowly beats him for the Most Innocent Player award.

it's Tango.

and then, in double life, the two of them are soulmates. it's as if the universe took the two players who would not play its game viciously enough, brutally enough, cruelly enough, and doomed them by giving them each other. it cursed them for their innocence because the life series is not meant to be a game of kindness and mercy. it is not a game of making vows with your ally. it is not a game of giving your life away to save others. it is a death match. and so, for their goodness, they will die first. together.

Okay, I was going to say, Kenny, bc of athleticism, but then I saw that you're half Spanish, and I KNOW FOR SURE, FILLY WOULD FALL IN LOVE, if you speak Spanish, he definitely would speak to you in his native tongue, he'd be all giddy and happy that he can and he would loveee having conversations with you.

And, yall would be cracking jokes together and telling each other funny stuff. Honestly, it would be so fun. He'd be so extroverted with you too, that he'd do so much stuff with you, take you to all the fun places, rollercoaster rides, bungee jumping (if you're not too scared of that) etc.

He's sooo cuddly as well, which would suit your physical affection needs, I KNOW FOR A FACT, MANS GONNA BE ALL UP ON YOU, Kisses like every 5 mins and longggg hugs, sometimes you'd tell him to let go and he would only for 5 seconds until he'd cling back onto you and tell you he loves you for the millionth time in an hour

He'd definitely be there for your cheerleading, infact he'd be there for all of them. Never would he miss one, especially if you were there. He'd be cheering you on. Sometimes, if he saw you practising, you best believe he might even join with you on the bleachers lmaoo

For the cat part, honestly, I don't really know if he likes cats or pets in general. But until he sees the sparkle and glimmer in your eyes every time you see a cat. For sure, he can never say no to you, meaning he'd give in and get you both a cute cat.

Your eyes, fr, I know for a fact that he would stare into them all day. Them ocean blue eyes definitely have drawn him to you, he'd think they're so pretty nothing could rival you.

He'd be telling everyone how much he's in love with you. They'd tell him to shut up because it'd be the only thing he's talked about for the whole conversation, but he'd just roll his eyes and smile, heading to text you to hang out with you because honestly who needs people when he can be there with you?

I actually got all giddy for my first DVR OC ask~, Eden was such a fun girl to work with, I'm so happy to continue with the others who are more or less going to be hard to draw lol

Also my first video I saw on your blog when I hovered was the Vil and leona arguing so that helped set the mood for me somehow-

While her and Malfie get along well, Eden knows how to get on Maleficent's good side by being respectful and at least acting like what she been through

Maleficent however is a powerful mage so she can sense a lie from her, but she doesn't say anything as she's rather good in the forest

As I mentioned with Maleficent and I'll say for the others, Eden knows how to quickly adapt her personality to match those she's trying to get on her good side, Hades didn't fall for that trick at all

He finds her entertaining and she finds him honestly admirable but can understand why Ms Hades gets so annoyed in some cases

Again, she knew well how to talk to him but she really was expecting an actual lion staring at her face!

He was amused by her especially after she got over her shock

Oh Gods they get along too well!

Like to the point once Jack saw they're still friendly after a hour he paled and went "Oh no-" and quickly began to do whatever it took for him to please Eden so she wouldn't go off on a lie that'll get him in trouble

Hmmm two beautiful women iconic in their work related to animals? yeah they seem to get along perfectly well darling~!

Cruella finds her very refreshing like her young self, but still openly talks about Gaston without fear

Eden is still as respectful as she always is, need more ally's am I right? But she honest to Heaven above find our favorite pirate man not masculine enough and annoying, but that's just her not growing up with emotions shown openly

She's a bit jealous of Lady Hook and the Captain's relationship and how they don't seem to really want to harm their enemies aka a bunch of children in animal onesies

Yet another pair that once their recruiter sees are getting along are dreaded it forevermore!

Ursula may find her a hoot but that doesn't stop her trying to manipulate her thinking by talking about her looks and talents and just slightly mentioning her and Gaston's bond not as good

Yeah she doesn't go neat that man for obvious reasons, and that's not just that he makes her uncomfortable on so many levels. He would down right do what he did for Esmerelda which was berate her of her looks and religion while being mega creepy! Does she say anything to Veil? No...she honestly too embarrassed to ruin that image of perfection of her close friend's master

A mix of Cruella and Maleficent with Eden being her oh so well acted self and her knowing of it but doesn't care and Eden's aware she knows and doesn't care and loves it

The Ikepri Prince's Pokémon Teams

Oh, my dear Ox-Anon, you've done it again. Leave it to you to give me another fun prompt! Tbh, I've actually been wondering about these myself for a bit so this is a good chance to get it down in writing. I very much want to expand upon how the guys picked these teams and the kind of world they'd live in if pokemon were around, but I also don't want this response to be too terribly long or technical so I'll leave it at 3 per prince:

1 wildcard if they were allowed legendaries or mythicals

Jin Grandet

Braviary: Eagle pokemon, can't get any more direct than that. The two of them probably lounge together and snooze on the rooftop all the time, avoiding responsibilities and driving Sariel crazy. But they step up to the plate when they're needed and never back down.

Wobbuffet: Hear me out, Wobbuffet is all about nonviolence and it puts itself in the line of fire to deflect attacks away from its allies. It's also really chill and silly, so I think Jin could bond with it well.

Latios: Because Jin's the big brother of the bunch and is always looking out for the rest of them.

Chevalier Michel

Luxray: Of course, he has a level 100 shiny one with perfect stats and IVs, best nature, and EV trained to the max. There aren't a lot of tiger pokemon and Chevalier doesn't seem like the Incineroar type.

Chandelure: I can just imagine Chevalier staying up late at night in his personal library reading with this guy floating around. A quiet reading buddy and personal guard. Plus it can help calm his icy atmosphere since it's a fire type.

Raikou: Another electric type? It looks like a tiger tho, and it's a legendary beast, and it matches his aesthetic quite a bit.

Clavis Lelouch

Liepard: The only leopard pokemon I can think of, though I haven't really been paying much attention to the later generations. But hey, it's a delinquent and it's purple!

Mime Jr. or Rotom: I honestly can't decide, but I'm just thinking of pokemon that are mischievous and jolly by nature. Someone who can keep up with his antics and able to play a big role in them, but still be small enough to hide in his pocket when it comes time to make an escape. Mime Jr. has the advantage of being able to mimic all the complicated maneuvers Clavis does while Rotom has the bonus of being able to hide in and/or possess furniture and the like.

Suicune: A second legendary beast to rival Chevalier's Raikou. The purple thingy reminds me of Clavis's silky hair.

Leon Dompteur

Pyroar: A lot more lion options to choose from (haha, pokemon co. playing favorites?) He'd have a male one that's regal and friendly. Whenever they tour the kingdom, children flood the streets just to meet and play with them.

Salamence: Baby Bagon's a tiny dragon that always dreamed of flying. I think Leon related to it's struggle and helped it train until it finally grew into a magnificent and powerful Salamence. I bet they take regular flights through the clouds to clear their minds (think Hiccup and Toothless).

Solgaleo: Leon's constantly described as being warm and bright as the sun, so I think this fits the best. Got some sky symbolism going for it, too.

Yves Kloss

Delcatty: I can just imagine Yves bouncing around with a pink Skitty as a kid and them entering contests together. And the move Assist fits because he's always praising the strengths of his brothers.

Alcremie: A sweet pokemon to partner up with him in the kitchen. You bet Jin and Luke have tried to take a bite out of it more than once, and that sends Yves into a fritz.

Jirachi: Yves would definitely befriend Jirachi and share his deepest wishes with it, praying and praying they'd be granted every night before bed. Because Jirachi only awakens for a few days once every 1000 years, it is said that whoever meets one is incredibly lucky. But Yves wouldn't think of it like that when the time comes to say goodbye. (Ok, this got real heavy out of nowhere, let's continue...)

Licht Klein

Lucario: Lucario is calm, cool, composed, and an excellent fighter, just like our Licht. They're also both deadly efficient and see things through to the end, even if the end means sacrificing themselves (Hang on, I thought we agreed no more of the sad feels!) AND they both like chocolate! (Nailed it.)

Espeon: Gotta go with the naming conventions here; the Eeveelution for the daytime. It's also graceful and reserved, just like he is.

Zacian: The ancient pokemon of legend that protected the land from calamity with its legendary sword alongside its brother.

Nokto Klein

Zoroark: A tricky shapeshifting fox dark as night and based off of the mythical kitsune? Sounds like Nokto, hook line and sinker.

Umbreon: It's quick, sneaky, and strikes at the perfect opportunity. Paralleling Licht's Espeon but in the night. You just know when they were still Eevees they used to mess around with Yves.

Zamazenta: The ancient pokemon of legend that protected the land from calamity with its legendary shield alongside its brother.

Luke Randolph

Ursaring: These 2 were made for each other, seriously. Big bears, love honey, button-nose-adorable as kids... this stuff writes itself.

Vespiquen: Another honey-related pokemon, but I think Luke could tame her. Maybe he and Teddiursa used to raid her hive back when she was a Combee, and once she evolved they had a final showdown where he eventually captured her. It took a while to get on her good side after that, though.

Celebi: Free spirited, lives in the forest, and is a massive napper. Yes, I think they'd be great friends.

Okay I started A Dream of Splendor and I'm liking it way more than I thought?

Caveat: it feels somewhat historical realism and that's not my usual genre so i am watching it as a fish out of water. But for what it is, I AM enjoying its story and the characters feeling like real people who could've existed or if in this time I could've met, being less perfect and Fantastical than romance cdramas tend to usually be

This shows intro music didn't catch me. Not necessary, but when intros catch me 90% of time I love the show. So this show needs to offer me more lol. The intros colors and image choices scream romance (horrifically possibly Fluff romance) and I hate those usually so I did Not vibe with it

The actual intro scene I DID vibe with though. Nothing to get me invested like a terrifying man with secrets, involved in fucked up stuff that I HOPE will be in the plot, implying future action scenes and political thriller (at least I fucking hope so). All things indicating this may not be a fluff romance. So I'm already way more on board

The choice to have both main girls fight in the teahouse? EXCELLENT. I realize heroines in shows can't always fight, and there's interesting angles for characters that don't. But me personally? In a historical, I like a woman who does protect herself and fix rhe problems HERSELF. I like that it showed our heroine is a woman who decides to do what she chooses, fight if that's what it requires, then commit with no regrets whether she wins or loses, lives or dies. She's stubborn, decided in her beliefs and choices, and I can deeply respect that. It's a good opening for her. It gets her in a fight with Shady Guy, but that too is a good show of how she picks her views and doesn't throw them away in fear while still trying to think of how to Get Through situations. It's impressive her bravery dealing with him, and I think honestly her resilience and commitment to her beliefs may have impressed him. Now he did insult her for being a tree that doesn't bend (if you don't compromise or accept you may need to pick another way/less deadly way you will be more likely to break when things go against your plan - which is fair enough, not bad advice though he delivered it rudely with a threat). But I do think it's rare anyone would rather die in front of him than suck up to him lmao.

I like him. Yeah he seems like an awful guy. Fun romantic lead concept though. Fun lead. I like that he clearly has his position and worldview and way of living (he breaks people until his outcome happens by any means - and he threatens her until she makes him tea). And she does too, they're strong characters written to be characters Before they're written to "accomodate" matching up with the other or accommodate some fluff trope some shows would slap in and use to drive the romance. I DO have an urge to see how the fuck these two end up allies, friends, lovers somehow. I do want to see how such strong personalities influence and change each other. It's a good premise for a story that connects two people and I'm intrigued.

I don't love rhe choice to make her a former noble (just because I am so desperate for a commoner/rich or commoner/commoner historical or historical fantasy since ALL I fucking ever find is rich/rich noble/noble. and while her backstory as a slave makes it a bit more like she has a much different background than him, and her being a merchant is Some Money but not "lives in the capital" money - all things I appreciate. It's just. It's still ultimately she is from a similar background once upon a time. I'm a bit tired of it. I'll tolerate it cause I truly can't find any alternative ;-; but please rec me if one exists. I tolerated only-royal heros in The Secret of the Three Kingdoms and loved that, and in Goodbye My Princess. But just... generally I still am craving commoner/noble or commoner/commoner. I'd like THEIR historical romance and what it'd be, a story making it as important and grand as any empress love story.). I do appreciate at least so far they both seem middle-upper class so it's not like empress/emperor (but who knows if it'll change). I DO like that the majority of her past has been as a pariah and then regular woman trying to earn a living and get her lover a better job and have work friends. It's grounded and I much prefer it to the noblewoman mold in these shows (but I realize that's a personal me thing lol)

I love the general presentation of our main girl. She isn't innocent, naive, or openly trusting. She's not the Goodbye My Princess or The Wolf type. She's a woman who's perfectly aware of the real world and it's fucked up parts from way back when it destroyed her family, She's level headed about her sisters/friends and even a bit ornery (very much like real people), she goes to handle shit herself, just overall very to my kind of preference as a character. So I like her and the lead guys potential as characters.

I LOVE the sets. Again the opening made me think itd look like 200 other historical costume cdramas. And to be fair so far the costumes aren't that unique. BUT the show looks eons better than the opening. Some of the shooting sets look shot in real locations not green screen, the village her teahouse is in particularly looks very beautiful by the river and like a real place people would live in. The ships in the harbor in the background of scenes I LOVE. The carriage rolling away out of frame, the boats going up and down the river like it's a usual everyday thing, people washing their dishes and doing chores. It feels grounded, lived in, with fairly natural clothing colors and simple costuming (as far as wigs looking like ways people may actually wear hair and clothes not so fancy they take you out of the fantasy you're watching historical). Aesthetically its subtle, but very natural, good lighting choices and set piece choices and little everyday details included, that make it feel SOLID grounded historical more than costume drama ramping things up fantastically. I'm not sure if it was expensive or cheap, but I've seen dramas with similar levels of costume detail that look WAY faker and not historical or remotely like even a "real life" vibe. So kudos to this show for making me feel I'm really just seeing some story about people hundreds of years ago. It's nice. Kind of a Pride and Prejudice feeling.

Love the focus on the female characters.

Again I gotta emphasize so far I like the hints of political thriller/Danger in the plot (I genuinely need them to get into a show so it's good they're here), and that so far the women all make choices I'd honestly prefer they did. I know women characters don't Need to match my preferences to be good. But at the same time? A big reason The Secret of the Three Kingdoms clicked wirh me SO MUCH is because a woman is the mastermind of the fake emperor, a widow princess is an assassin in one of the key political thriller plots, a whore is manipulating even the Key policial manipulator, Caos daughter even naive as she is also makes choices I think are in line with her kind of raising, even the pregnant consort who dies I felt was really Driving her own plot and just generally all the women on the show felt as on equal footing as the men in terms of Driving the plot and influencing it and Taking action rather than only Reacting. So far in A Dream of Splendor, I'm getting the same vibe. Even our naive dumb musician girl is TAKING action to marry, thinking of her future plans, fighting for what she wants trying to convince her sister, life is not only Happening to her but she's Driving her own life. While that may ideally be true of many female characters, not all shows actually write things that way or give the effort to depict it visually so the audience knows. Theoretically any woman in a historical drama getting just married is a Driving factor in her decision making of it (or her decision to let go of control and do as others say, which is its own internal inner story if the writers/visuals care to actually depict it). But in reality there's a number where it's just "she was married" or "i got another concubine" and I think maybe why I like stuff like tsottk and Jade Palace Lock Heart (even with how cruel the women sometimes are in it) is that I can see THEIR pov on why they're making their decisions or why they've fallen into becoming pawns from Their pov. They aren't ever relegated to props for a story, they ARE the story. They're Driving it, their pov is shared with us, and I personally prefer that.

I have 10 minutes left of ep 1 and fear for main girl walking into a fight she wasn't meant to stumble into

And finally: I know I sound harsh, but really just consider it me disliking the intro vid to the show lol. So far I've very much liked ALL of the actual episode. Very strong opening with good main characters, grounded setting I can get lost in and feel, solid writing decisions indicating a character arc focus, interesting setup.

this song really just... firstly, it’s one of my favorite songs, and the line i chose there pushes home the sort of terrified devotion i think the desert has. plus there’s a fun line about the cold wind blowing in from the north in the ending bits that i think very much fits their conflict with the red army, and a lot of legally obligated flight imagery that i need to have in every possible song because i’m a fuckin nerd.

no children- the mountain goats

“i hope that our few remaining friends/give up on trying to save us/i hope we come up with a failsafe plot to piss off the dumb few that forgave us”

i will admit that no children isn’t a perfect fit, but the general vibe of sort of defiant pessimism and betrayal fits very well with them! it’s very triumphant in its death, and i think that is very desertcore, because what’s more triumphantly dead than being the last duo left alive?

skulls- bastille

“when all of our friends are dead and just a memory/it’s always been just you and me/for all to see”

okay like this entire song is SO MUCH DESERT VIBES? LIKE SO MUCH. if i were to ever make an animatic for them i’d do it with this song. “a match is our only light, it’s day of the dead i’m indiana jones, yeah,” “i hope you can make me laugh six feet under when we’re bored of each other,” “i don’t want to rest in peace, i’d rather be the ghost that annoys you,” IT JUST KEEPS GOING. i think this song would work well with any third life duo, honestly, but these two in PARTICULAR just because of how it ended with them literally ‘buried’ next to each other, and again, the chaotic death vibes.

freaking out- mystery skulls

“i just keep out of my tongue/til all you want is done/and you just wanna leave me, oh yeah”

this song is a very third life grian song to me in particular! it could be my bias because of my little headcanon of grian burning on his red life, but seriously, this song is very reminiscent of the back and forth of loyalty that grian has with scar. the above line is sort of representative of the betrayal on red, and of course grian’s life debt.

night running- shin sakiura

(this song is in japanese! these lyrics are the rough english translation i found on google.) “someday we will stand at this place once again/for sure we will stand up again and again/we will watch it will the end/i want you to live freely”

this song is actually the ending theme for the anime bna, which i adore, and i just added it on a whim before looking at the translated lyrics. but um. holy hell the lyrics hurt me because they’re about running in search of someone, running for no reason, looking for something, and it just really hit, because the desert never really had a goal! they didn’t expect to survive, they were trying to survive, but what was their longterm goals? nothing. so that sort of endless search felt fitting for this. plus the song is a parallel for the two estranged best friends of the show so! perfect.

summer nights- siames

“it’s summertime/singing al green in your car/heading to a party/and the night air feels alive”

okay again, i will admit this song is mainly on here because i absolutely love it, but i also do think it fits well. it’s also about healing/estranged friendships, with a very distinct feeling of nostalgia for a happier time. maybe for a time when this was all a game, when there was no blood or betrayals on their hands. little canon divergent, but it’s fun for me, so into the playlist it goes!

allies or enemies- the crane wives

“are we allies or enemies/this will be the death of me, this will be the death of me/all’s fair in love and war but i can’t fight with you anymore”

. i just. points to that lyric. it literally led to both of their deaths. are they allies or enemies? it also fits with scar still wanting grian to be his friend even after he’s no longer indebted with the line “what happens now? do we have another go, do we bow out?” another very good animatic song that i’ve considered heavily. i listen to this playlist a lot

this song just has a lot of fire and arson and high energy vibes. my little war criminals look at them go

this one is like the exact opposite vibe of burn him down. the oh hellos are so poetic and this song just... feels like the healing potions after a battle. many of the metaphors here fit, i think

okay this song is straight up just a dance song. i added it because i like it and also for some reason it feels ominous to me? i’ve got no idea why, it’s seriously just a club song, but it’s a banger and it’s in this playlist because i said so

this song is a VIBE for both desertduo members. there’s parts for both of them. it’s ruthless, gritty, very maniacal, perfect. listen to it and you’ll immediately understand why i added it.

sweet tooth is super upbeat and bright with these strangely dark lyrics? like i’m pretty sure it’s about addiction. in any case, i thought the “i hold hands with cosmic entities” very funnily fitting for both of the desert boys. it’s a banger!

I hope they can make it work with Ally, despite the obvious problems, but I don't think they're exactly perfect for each other. It's a relationship between two persons who aren't used to letting others see through their facade, so I'm a bit worried that they'll get trapped in shallowness. Still, I don't think there are any better matches for Judi in Foxfire. A BROTP I have with said character: Literally her brother! Judi's relationship with Jonas has gotten better lately and that's a very good thing for them both. They might not always agree with each other's choices but they tend to understand them, and there aren't too many people who do. In all honestly though, Judi is more dependent on their relationship than Jonas is. A NOTP I have with said character: Uh... Chase. I mean, they lived together for a while and I was very happy that they mostly ignored each other. Mostly. A random headcanon: Judi is pretty pedantic over her looks but she's not doing it to be attractive. It helps Judi to keep her thoughts in order when things around her are in order, her hair and makeup included. General Opinion over said character: I broke my own rule when I added Judi to the hood, as the first generation wasn't supposed to have siblings (living in Foxfire, that is). I haven't regretted it, as Judi has proved to be much more than a mirror for her brother! While she definitely is that too, she's complex in her own right. I hope she can learn to be happy with the life she has chosen.

May I have Yandere 2p Allies and Axis that's Vampires and they're falling falling in love with reader. But the problem is, the Reader is a Werewolf..... a very powerful one ( One that can rival them, and it's very possible if the darling can dominant them ). But other than that, the Reader is like this Huge energetic innocent puppy that likes to tackle hug them.

God he’s in love with your personality

He wants you all to himself for the rest of time

But of course there’s an issue

1) you’re a werewolf and he’s a vampire, you’d never willingly go with him even if you do love him

And then there’s problem number 2) you’re incredibly strong for a werewolf and Al’s a little afraid you might be able to take him down if he tries anything funny

And though Allen doesn’t have to worry about you not loving him or leaving him, he can’t have you the way he really wants you since you’d definitely could send him into a late grave

Allen would definitely concede to the best of his abilities and not completely take you and lock you away from everyone

He’d definitely try some mind games on you though, and try to occupy your time as much as vampirically possible

And after some time he’d probably consider changing you or attempting to change you so you could be with him forever, even if it makes you hate him

He just can’t bare the thought of living without you

Oliver

As yandere as he is Oliver has never truly considered locking you away

He’s not much of a fighter and every tactic he could use to get you and keep you would make him very unhappy to use

All of those plans include heavy drugs and poisons since you’re a werewolf and much stronger than he actually is

And he doesn’t much care for the idea of keeping you drugged and high since it might mean he’d never see you happily frolic or smile at him again

That is simply a sight Oliver cannot live without anymore

So he would never attempt to physically cage you, but he’d try to emotionally cage you

Always has an excuse to why he needs you home and why you can’t go out with your pack anymore or go hunting with them

Maybe sometimes gives small doses of drugs in food or drink so that your more complacent and easy to convince

Would regretfully drug you the day he decides to attempt to change you into a vampire/werewolf-vampire mix

He cant have you fighting back or saying no, that is the only day Oliver might get violent and super controlling towards you

He just needs you to stay with him forever so badly he wouldn’t mind shedding a bit of your blood

Oliver just gets so paranoid and scared one day you’ll never come back from seeing your pack so he has to do something, anything, that will keep you with him

As I’ve stated before Matt is a more lax and chill yandere

So he’d be more apt to just tell you he wants you home a lot and that he wants to spend forever with you

And with the fact that your incredibly strong even for a werewolf and could most definitely match him in a fight makes him a bit nervous to be sneaky with you

Tho he is confident he could take you, especially is Kuma(?) was around to help lock you up

Matt does psychologically mess with you

Just to make you more dependent on him and more likely to agree with him

He does this until he’s positive you’d agree immediately once asked if you want to become a vampire like him

He wants it to be as consensual as possible since he does love you and your innocent puppy personality and doesn’t want to corrupt it too much by having to physically force you while he changes you

Matt wants to keep you as authentic as he possibly can while keeping you all to himself

Francois

Absolutely hates this predicament

Out of everyone he could’ve easily loved it had to be an energetic, powerful werewolf that he couldn’t manipulate or overpower easily

Francois curses his bad luck in choosing a partner, but loves you never the less

Francois would end up coming up with an elaborate plan to lock you up after completely gaining your trust

Though he knows you love him, he knows you’re wary of him being a vampire even now

And he thinks your smart for being wary, but it honestly amuses him that him being a vampire should really be the least of your worries

He’d have you chained in only a few weeks after planning it out, keeping your shifting/breaking out at bay with drugs and strong silver bounds as well as keeping you far away from the moon and it’s light

Francois wouldn’t change you immediately

He honestly likes you being a werewolf and not soulless and hell-bound like him

But he might change his mind if you start getting more aggressive or show signs of breaking out

Francois can’t lose you, you make him feel happy even if you scream obscenities at him for locking you up

Viktor

Honestly he gets kind of pissy when he thinks about this perdicament

He’s a vampire ffs and yet he hesitates to take you, a literal ball of sunshine and energy, all for himself because you’re scarily powerful and dangerous

It really rubs him the wrong way to think about it

Viktor is no coward, however, so he’s going to make a very calculated plan to get you all for himself

Once he gets you, he confines you as well as he can somewhere far away from your pack, possibly even gets rid of them if he has the time

Viktor is not likely to drug you, he’s not very fond of that unlike some of the others

He will torture you in anyway he sees fit, even if he loses his precious ball of sunshine in the process, to him it’s just an unfortunate but needed loss in his plan

He changes you very quickly

Him changing you breaks your ties to the pack, if they’re still alive, and makes you weaker and easier to deal with and keep

Viktor does love you, and that’s why he has to keep you like this for the rest of your lives

Zao

Zao is a simple man with a simple plan

He just gets relatively comfortable with you and then boom, druggy time

He doesn’t care if you don’t act like yourself anymore

To him it’s all the same and as long as he doesn’t have to deal with you in your super strong werewolf form he figures your personality is an acceptable loss

Zao really did love your sunshine personality tho so sometimes it does bum him out that he’ll never see you like that again

Probably didn’t consider changing you until wayyy after kidnapping you

I’m talking like a year or more before he realizes that’s a thing he could do

When he changes you nothing much changes

He notices you’re a bit weaker and more lethargic after the bite, but your about the same as before after a few weeks so he figures you’re perfectly fine and frozen in time like he is

Luciano

So angry and vocal about the situation

Like why did you have to be the most perfect creature he’s ever seen? Why did you have to be so strong and clever?

So salty about it

Luciano would try to not lock you up, but the second someone looks at you the wrong way it’s to the basement with you and the death of whoever dared trying something with his darling

He’s not above drugging you but would prefer not to if you just behaved so he didn’t have to

Doesn’t consider changing you for a long time

Luciano is almost in love with the fact that you’re so fragile that the passage of time would make you weak

He’d eventually change you before you got really old because at the end of the day he realized he couldn’t live without you

Lutz

Lutz is so in love with you but so frustrated with what you are

He’s strong, but lazy

He could match you, maybe even overpower you if he really tried, but it’s so frustrating that the one thing he wants doesn’t come with ease

If you’d’ve been any other creature, or god even better human, he would have no trouble stealing you away

But of course you were a werewolf who everyone loved and watched out for

Lutz would get so frustrated with himself and think himself into exhaustion many nights thinking of a no hassle way to get you home with him forever

Of course he finally does it while you’re sleeping thanks to some super strong sedatives he slipped you

He would consider changing you before you woke up or before the sedatives wore off just so everything would be so much easier on him and you’d be too high and out of it to ever really question him

So Lutz would naturally go with that plan, he bites you after settling you down in your forever prison

He does it out of possession more than needing you forever, Lutz just wants your pack and every other vampire and werewolf out there to know that your his forever

Kuro

Kuro loves the idea of you more than he actually loves you

He loves the power and status he’d get from changing and keeping

Of course he still is madly in love with you, but he’s more so in love with his power fantasy

Kuro would love to just waltz in and take you, but even he can admit that he would barely match you in a fight and he certainly can’t take on you and the rest of your pack at the same time

So he lures you to his home as sweetly as he possibly can

There he quickly knocks you out and chains you away

He’s likely to play with you for a week or maybe even as long as a couple of months before he decides it’s no longer fun and just wants you to be his forever

Having some decency Kuro would attempt to ask you if you consented to being changed

If you said no or put up a fight he simply knock you out and do what needs to be done

If you agree you’re playing right into his sick little fantasy as he sees this as a sign that he’s completely tamed you now, both mentally and physically

Something I Just Realised! So Punk vs Eddie seems like the perfect match for "We're conflicted!" Chants... But instead the crowd seems to be picking one or the other... But Dark Order vs Dark Order DID get those chants. The crowd honestly not being able to decide who to back and instead asking them not to fight. I wonder what the difference is..... maybe it's Eddie. Maybe it's that Eddie is demanding this fight. The crowd respects him, so when he says "Fight me." The crowd's reaction is "Yeah ".

i think the biggest difference is that eddie and punk aren't in a faction together. they haven't been allies in aew at all.

unless it's two distinct warring groups within a faction (like bullet club and the elite), they shouldn't be fighting at all. dark order is supposed to stick together, not let this stupid disagreement tear them apart.

eddie and punk might get some "both these guys!" chants, but ultimately, we do want them to fight. i mean, it's wrestling, right? but they also managed, in this the year that cm punk returned to wrestling, to get cm punk booed, however briefly. they're always extremely effective in making sure the crowd knows to cheer for eddie louder.

So I've seen you discuss a lot about a lot of the characters in NIF and I was wondering what you thought about the magistrates? Primarily Shen Zhui and Cai Quan? I feel their really underated by the fandom bacuse they're neither pretty nor that engaged with the main cast besides Jingyan, but they're such good decent people and both honestly have some of the best quotes.

Hello Anon! oh man this is such a fun question. I agree, Shen Zhui and Cai Quan are super underrated in our fandom, but really just very fun dudes with a lot to recommend them. I wish we knew more about them honestly. I think you’re right that our fandom doesn’t produce a lot of content for them in part because we see so little of their lives and their connection to the other characters is so limited. They probably actually spend a lot more time with Jingyan than we see, because they fall under the “Jingyan, competent working prince” part of his life that tends to get montaged away in favor of MCSs schemes and various personal dramas.

Which is a shame because they are truly great!! What we do see of them speaks to two men who are genuinely kind, competent in their work, and actually quite good friends with Jingyan and friendly acquaintances with MCS.

They are also super interesting and dramatically functional characters, who provide important perspective on what it’s like to work in a corrupt system and keep your soul. I’ve written before about the way that the court under Xiao Xuan is kind of set up to make actual good work incredibly difficult, and one of the best things about NIF is the argument that it makes for rejecting the terms of abusive systems, and refusing to treat incompatibility with abusive systems as weakness. It doesn’t actually go full “abolish the imperial court,” which truthfully is what is called for but is just so wildly out of the genre and setting that it would break the frame (gosh that’s definitely not an argument I would have made two years ago).

We’ll start with Shen Zhui because he’s honestly my favorite dude: This is someone who has committed himself to doing the best possible work he can, as quietly as he can, and just accepts that he will pay the price for it. He’s not going to let that stop him from doing his job, which is courageous when it only means he’s going to remain a low-level bureaucrat in a vipers nest, but actually gets exponentially more brave once Jingyan taps him for #1 competent minister. This dude has a MASSIVE target on his back and accepts it with perfect equanimity. He literally has assassins after him and he’s still investigating corruption cases and interviewing witnesses with like four bodyguards max. His own people are like “please care more about your own well-being.”The only reason he survives act 1 is SHEER DUMB LUCK. If Jingrui hadn’t picked that day to get suspicious of his BIL he would have died in that alley.

Shen Zhui is not really a dramatic person, but he’s incredibly brave, and incredibly committed to his work. He’s the epitome of working within the system to change the system. It is SO CLEAR that of the three of them he was the only one actually in court for the Chiyan incident. Jingyan lost more, but he wasn’t actually THERE. He did not see. Shen Zhui knows that in order to do the most good he will have to compromise and be cautious and find workarounds and it does genuinely chafe at him (see: the moment when it looks like Prince Yu is going to get the disaster relief assignment and he wishes for lighting to strike him dead), but he does it anyway. Shen Zhui is in it for the long game, even when he must know that with his resources and his position there is no version of this where he “wins.” He will not be able to fix the system, but he’s completely committed to grinding out every bit of positive impact he can out of it anyway. There’s a definite nobility in that, and an endurance that is incredibly impressive.

Cai Quan is so palpably younger that Shen Zhui, and he brings such a different but still wonderful energy. I’m genuinely not sure if he would have survived if not for MCS and Jingyan’s desire to reform the court, because he clearly has such a hard time standing by while injustice is done, even small injustice. They aren’t even off the palace steps before he’s criticizing the emperor’s poor treatment of Jingyan, and that continues to be the theme of his character throughout (side note: what is with both of these dudes committing light treason while standing around on the palace steps?? how are you not both dead?). He’s also hardworking but he has none of Shen Zhui’s patience. He’s ready to shake things up! There’s a very real sense that he’s going to push the needle as hard as he can as fast as he can with the resources available to him. He’s very like Jingyan that way, and it’s very clear at the end of the series that Jingyan is going to rely on that energy and that impatience to ensure that things get done quickly. It’s also very wonderful to see the sort of mutual needs that get filled when they join Jingyan’s secret faction. He needs allies in court and competent ministers when he finally takes the throne, but they need him just as much. For both of them he is the way forward, that will let them make the difference they so badly want to make. It’s no wonder that they jump at the chance to support him when it means they can do everything they were already doing, but now with more support and also a friend!

These two are great because they are a sort of matched set in terms of the things that are actually needed to reform the government. Between Cai Quan’s passion and Shen Zhui’s endurance they have a real shot at making things better, and they function as really excellent foils for each other.

Also they’re just such fun people??? They are so clearly friends and that’s incredibly charming. They’re also so protective of Jingyan and it’s adorable. In Episode 47, when Jingyan is like “I’m not sad, why would I be sad” and then wanders off sadly, the look that they share before they try to talk to him is DEEPLY hilarious and very cute. Particularly Shen Zhui has very dad energy in the way he looks out for Jingyan. And frankly Jingyan could use some people who are just straight up regular friends without the high-octane weirdness of MCS.

Story: Messing with the stars

Chapter 1

Bobby

I always end up here. It is as if her voice drags me back. It’s a miracle that no one has noticed how often I sit here to see her.

She finishes rehearsing, I grab my backpack and race to the parking lot to catch up with my friends.

Lottie, Gary, Lucas and Hope are waiting for me in front of Lottie's car.

"Bobbycakes, where were you?" Lottie looks annoyed, the others just get in the car.

“Sorry, Lottie. Mr. Hughes wanted to talk to me about my homework.”

My eyes move like magnets to her, like every single day. She has her dark brown hair tied up in a beautiful braid. Her green crop top matches her beautiful eyes perfectly. She laughs as she walks home with her best friend, Kassam. The two quickly bonded over their love for music and had being inseparable ever since.

“Bobby, are you listening?” Lottie brings me back to the real world, she looks angry. But decides to just get on the wheel. I walk into the passenger seat and turn to see her beautiful face one more time.

“Did you hear that this time it will be obligatory for us to participate in the school play this semester? It will directly impact our Drama class. ”

Everyone sighs in frustration.

“Why are we taking Drama again?” Asked Gary, clearly annoyed.

"Is mandatory this semester, an attempt by the school to make us more creative and versatile, or something like that." Says Hope, somewhat disinterested. After all, she is known for being good at whatever she does. She doesn't mind leaving her advanced math class for a semester in order to recite some lines.

"It wouldn't be a bad thing if I had to kiss that beautiful theater freak." Gary is smiling, definitely imagining himself in that situation. Gross.

“Alison Light?” Wow, Lucas seems to have been paying attention to her too.

"Hell yeah mate, she’s gorgeous." Lottie rolls her eyes, and Hope dramatically changes the conversation.

Alison Light, aka Sunny or Sunlight. (Or at least that's how I would call her if I had the guts to speak to her.) Everyone else calls her Ally, and I'm embarrassed to say that my friends call her theater freak.

There is a rumor, that Sunny's dad passed away 5 years ago. Her mom found a job in London, so they had to move from Scotland. Alison took refuge in music, which has always been what she loved the most, entered the choir, the school band, each play, whatever was involved with music, she did it. That's how she earned the ‘theater freak’ nickname from everyone else, especially, Lottie and Gary. Unfortunately, everyone listens to Lottie and Gary.

I came to school a year later. Lottie immediately thought I had the potential to belong to her group, to this day I have no idea why. She told me that if I wanted to belong, I had to be around people with potential, and when Sunny approached with vibrant eyes and a huge smile to introduce herself, Lottie pushed her to the side, and made fun of her for having a 'crush' on the new kid and behaving ‘desperate’.

I didn’t defend her. I followed Lottie down the hall, and didn't turn to see her even once.

Every day when I see her in the hallway I wonder why I chose a scary stranger instead of the girl with the most beautiful smile I have ever seen, and the conclusion makes me quite embarrassed.

I chose Lottie because I was tired of being the kid everyone made fun of regardless of the consequences, the one who was just a joke. The boy Caitlin Evans cheated on by pretending she wanted me to be her boyfriend just to humiliate me in front of the whole school. I saw the opportunity to be someone different, and I took it. Letting go not only poor and humiliated Bobby, but also the opportunity to meet Alison in the process.

The next day I walk with the boys to the auditorium. Most of the students are already there. The music is quite loud, and her perfect voice immediately reaches my ears. As we get closer I can finally see what's going on. Kassam and Alison are doing a duet of the song "Into the Unknown" which in my opinion is not easy to sing. I’m annoyed to admit that they sound perfect together. Their harmonies are beautiful and their notes are totally clean and well placed. All of us who do not normally belong to this class, have our mouths open.

“As you could hear, this class has talent to spare. I will not accept less than what I know you can give. Everyone will sing a part of the song you wrote me yesterday on the list.” Mr. Hudson loves music as much as Alison, and has been an important person in her life for the past few years. He has always been kind to me, and has invited me multiple times to participate in his plays due to my and i quote ‘charming personality ’.

Auditions started. Surprisingly my friends did a pretty decent job. I would not choose them as the protagonists but they were not bad.

I always wanted to try theater. I've been watching it for years, since I've never missed a play by Alison, no matter how delusional it sounds. And I always liked singing, but believe me or not, I have stage fright. Also, even if I sang, the chances of me beating Kassam in the lead are microscopic.

"McKenzie, let's go. I have a feeling you will do a good job, I am excited to hear you.” Mr. Hudson, I honestly hope I don't fall off the stage while I go up, for me that will already be a victory.

The music starts playing, but I am unable to open my mouth. I turn to meet her green eyes, which for the first time in years seem to speak to me. She tries to tell me to focus on her, and I do. The song starts again, and this time I manage to start singing the words, which sound more whispered than anything else.

"Of your kiss, your touch, your love" Sunny starts singing with me, everyone turns to see her, but she seems determined to help me sing this song. I remain somewhat fearful during the chorus, and she takes the second verse like a queen. Focusing on making me feel comfortable, still staring at my eyes and taking my hand.

Suddenly, she is the only thing I can see.

The connection I felt the first time I saw her feels stronger than ever as we dance together across the stage, our voices sounding perfect next to each other, like they're meant to fit together.

I'm definitely not half as good as Kassam is, but without a doubt my connection and chemistry with Sunny is much stronger, or at least that's what I want to believe. A man has to have hope. It was a magical moment, like when Troy and Gabriella meet and sing 'Start Of Something New' together. Don't judge me, I saw her with my sister Gemma.

The song ends and everyone is shocked. Lottie seems about to pass out, and Lucas looks at me in disbelief.

"I've found my stars." Mr. Hudson whispers, his eyes lit up.

"What? No way! They were supposed to be solos, not duets ” Lottie yells, clearly about to lose her patience.

"My decision is final. I've never seen so much chemistry, it's like they were meant to be together. ” Seems like I'm not the only one who thinks so. I knew Mr. Hudson was a smart guy.

"This work is going to be the best we have ever done, I assure you." Sunny blushes slightly, we are still holding hands, and I honestly don't feel like letting her go, but she starts to pull apart gently.

"Thank you, Sunny." I whisper, she looks at me with mischief in her green eyes. That's when I realize what I said. WE ARE NOT NEAR THE STAGE OF NICKNAMES, GOOD ONE IDIOT.

"Omg, I'm so sorry, Alison. I, You probably don’t even know my name and I’m calling you by a nickname, this is so embarrasing.” I start to mumble things that I don't understand myself.

She smiles at me, trying to calm me down. "It's okay, Bobby McKenzie. Professional joker, awesome baker, beautiful eyes. From Scotland, just like me.” She emphasizes my name, so I have no doubts that she knows who I am. And I almost passed out with the beautiful eyes thing. Fuck, she's so sweet.

“Sunny sounds adorable, I was getting tired of theater freak anyway. And like Mr. Hudson, I could see your full potential. You just needed a hand.”

I blush, hard. She likes it. Both the nickname and the fact that she made me blush. I can see it on her face.

Lottie grabs my arm and starts dragging me toward Hope to leave.

This time I don't let history repeat itself.

"I'll see you tomorrow... Sunny." I wink at her, trying to sound and look as cool as possible.

She smiles. "See you tomorrow, partner."

So I've seen a few opinions of ppl who say that ALL Ouma ships are bad because they are "abusive" or toxic because Ouma would "bully" the other and they're unhealthy, etc. I've read so many of ur metas so Ik that's not completely true. But as a fellow Ouma and SaiOuma shipper, what do think of this?

I think it’s an unfortunate fact that many people sometimes takeaspects of a ship which aren’t always the best or the healthiest out of contextand associate them with words like “abusive” or “toxic” when that really isn’tthe case at all.

I’m reminded of the ask I got a while back from an anon whomentioned that people had been calling Tenko a “creepy stalker” just becauseshe was overly eager about making friends with Himiko and needed to learn torespect that Himiko is much slower about opening up to people. Again, it’s aperfect example of a ship that does have flaws getting completely misunderstoodand drastically misinterpreted out of context to make it look a lot worse thanit is.

Any relationship, be it romantic or platonic, has flaws. Orat least, it should. Adding flaws and things to work on and improve and, yes,even occasional unhealthy behaviors makes a ship much more realistic, and givesthe characters something to work on addressing. Relationships without any flawsat all lack depth. That’s not to say they can’t be enjoyable or cute in their easygoingness,but they simply aren’t realistic.

By “flaws” and “unhealthy behaviors,” I want to note that Idon’t mean anything edgy. Ships don’t have to be dark and gritty or angsty inorder to be realistic, interesting, and compelling. Even a ship that seems themost lighthearted and laid back can still have really interesting flaws—these canbe anything from a lack of communication (maybe one character doesn’t tell theother when something is wrong because they don’t want to make them worry) tosimple misunderstandings (maybe a character accidentally speaks for or overanother character because they thought they would like something, and it turnsout they don’t, and they have to discuss that kind of behavior and work on it).Either way, even the most “vanilla” ship can still be fleshed out andinteresting and compelling, as long as there are some flaws in it.

As with individual characterization, of course, the mostimportant thing to keep in mind for writing ships is to not brush those flawsunder the rug. Having a character’s flaws get addressed and called out withinthe narrative serves to highlight the fact that they’re not perfect and thatthey really do have things they need to work on. It keeps the character(s) fromgetting a free pass, and helps convey to the reader that these kinds ofbehaviors are unhealthy and need to stop in order for a healthy dynamic ofunderstanding and trust to ensue.

I would say that Ouma’s flaws as a character get more than called out within thenarrative. Not only is his hostile and antagonistic behavior constantlyportrayed within a negative light even when he’s arguably doing it for “theright reasons,” but Chapter 4 alone is almost entirely dedicated to being “theOuma call-out chapter.”

Despite Ouma’s motivations, it is absolutely true that hebecomes far too fixated on Saihara in Chapter 4. Unable to bring himself totrust anyone else, he decides that if he does ally with Saihara, he wants it tobe only with him and no one else. And to that extent, he tries to force Saiharato cut ties with Momota and the rest of the group, because he believes that he’s“wasting his time” with them and that they’re “dragging him down” by becomingoverly-reliant on his detective skills.

There’s a reason his confession scene in Chapter 4 is such amorbid double-entendre. When he says he’s the kind of person who wants “theperson he fell in love with” to look only at him, even if it means “putting hishands around their neck,” he’s not referring to actually strangling Saihara oranything nearly so grotesque. But it’s still a pretty messed up comment to make(not only because it’s very dark foreshadowing about Miu’s death, as her corpseis discovered in the scene immediately following his confession).

It highlights his unhealthy mindset by that point, thelevels of paranoia that he’s mired up in, and the fact that he honestlybelieves forcibly trying to make Saihara “look at him” and cooperate with himis for the best, regardless of Saihara’s actual wishes or thoughts on thematter. He’s stuck in tunnel vision, completely justifying his asshole behaviorby saying it’s “in order to stop the killing game,” trying to act as though “theends justify the means,” when the simple fact of the matter is that he’sjealous of Momota and the others and wants Saihara to pick him over them. Itsounds very childish, and that’s what it boils down to: he’s being a child andhiding behind his more strategical, logical objectives in order to justify it.

But the thing is, while this behavior is unhealthy and messedup and a perfect example of Ouma acting like an inexcusable jerk, it getsdirectly addressed within the narrative. Rather than just sitting passively andletting Ouma say what he wants, rather than cutting ties with anyone, Saiharaputs his foot down. He tells Ouma point-blank in the Chapter 4 post-trial thathe’s pathetic for acting the way that he is, and that he’s just doing itbecause he’s lonely and jealous that Momota has people who care about him buthe doesn’t.

And Ouma, despite being the world’s biggest smart-ass, triesto respond to that—and can’t. He immediately stops his villain act, says he “gotbored,” and wanders off, because he literally doesn’t have any good retort toSaihara’s accusations. Saihara called him out on his behavior and it was 100%true, and while it’s certainly understandable why Ouma acted the way that hedid, it’s a good thing that he wasn’t just given a free pass for it by thenarrative. In fact, on a first playthrough, the player is actively encouragedto hate Ouma, not only for his actions towards Saihara but for what he did toGonta as well, since it seems as though he’s just acting purely antagonisticand evil for no reason at all.

This kind of willingness to discuss and call out flaws issomething I think is necessary for any character dynamic, be it a friendship ora romantic relationship. See, as long as there are flaws or negative aspects toa relationship, just about any ship has the potential to become “unhealthy.” Butthose flaws don’t make a ship “abusive” or “toxic.” These words are oftenassociated with ships as a kneejerk reaction, because people have either madeoverly hasty judgments based on misinformation, or because people want to skewpublic opinion about a ship a certain way. It’s easy to slap these labels on aship without much proof or justification—and that’s very, very dangerous,because it causes mix-ups and misunderstandings with what actually qualifies asabuse or toxic behavior in a relationship.

As someone who has a lot of firsthand knowledge with abusebecause of family reasons, and as someone who’s currently in a very healthy andloving relationship, I can say that there’s a huge difference between the two.Abuse stems from an imbalance of power, with one person in the dynamic, be it familyor friend or significant other, trying to constantly belittle and undermine theother person, despite the occasional “honeymoon” phase, or brief times whenthey’re nice to you. “Unhealthy” behaviors are just flaws: things you or the otherperson might sometimes do unconsciously, but which can be addressed anddiscussed rationally, and improved, as long as you admit to them and make aconscious effort to do them less often.

Ouma has a lot offlaws. That’s one thing I’ve never tried to deny in any of my meta, nor will Iever try to, because it’s an undeniable fact. But I think trying to say that “all”ships with him, or that saiouma in particular would be “abusive” or “toxic” isa gross exaggeration and fails to address the ways in which Ouma actuallyinteracts with the people he cares about.

Let’s take his canonical interaction with Saihara, forexample. Chapter 4 is Ouma at his most fixated, and Chapter 5 is after he’sdecided to cut almost all ties with Saihara and the others, so that he candeliberately pretend to be the ringleader instead. But let’s examine some ofhis other interactions with Saihara throughout the game. In his FTEs and themain story alike, he constantly encourages Saihara, rather than belittling him.

Whenever Saihara guesses the right answer in a trial orpicks up on some clue or other he’s left for him, he praises him openly.Saihara sometimes wonders if he’s just being sarcastic, because Ouma is a knownliar, but it’s a fact that Ouma only ever makes these comments whenever heseems truly, genuinely impressed that someone is actually following his trainof thought.

He’s deeply interested in Saihara and in trying to figurehim out, and it’s clear that prior to Chapter 4, where he became hell-bent onstopping the killing game “no matter what the cost,” he actually does want toprioritize Saihara’s wishes and happiness over his own—which is, I think,pretty indicative of what a sympathetic person he is at heart.

As an example of what I mean, there’s a point in Chapter 3where Ouma says that he wouldn’t want to actually resurrect Amami for the “resurrectionmotive.” When Saihara asks him why in surprise, Ouma says it’s because hethinks Saihara himself would be happier if they could resurrect Kaede instead,and that he’s “thinking of his beloved Saihara-chan.” He tries to brush it alloff immediately afterwards as a lie, but considering there was no need for himto bring it up in the first place, and considering it matches perfectly wellwith his behavior in his FTEs and other parts of the game, I think he wasprobably telling the truth.

In his FTEs, he’s playful.He’s a brat who wants attention and loves to tease, but really, he’s justplayful with Saihara. His FTEs are some of the best evidence prior to Chapter 6of the fact that, for all his bluffs, he’s little more than a harmlessprankster; he spends the whole time with Saihara “threatening to kill him inthe end,” only to spend every FTE either playing Yu-Gi-Oh, drinking tea, ortying a game of rock-paper-scissors for 100 rounds. And in his final FTE, hewraps it all up by losing the knife game on purpose and letting Saihara win,giving him as many hints as possible to the true way to win the killing gameitself—which is to say, “don’t play it.”

His prison mode ending provides us with direct insight intowhat Ouma is like in a situation where he’s far less paranoid. Without thekilling game ever starting, he remains cautious, but he’s far less distant.Unlike his FTEs where he cheekily but firmly lets Saihara know that they won’tbe hanging out anymore, and where Saihara can tell that Ouma “won’t reach outor let himself be reached out to,” in his prison mode ending, Ouma actuallyasks Saihara to stay by his side, stating that he knows Saihara “wants to knowmore about him” and thinks that he’ll be able to do so if they stay togethereven after leaving Saishuu Academy. Saihara accepts, admitting to himself thathe’s certainly very curious about Ouma and that he doesn’t think Ouma can “lieabout the warmth of his hand”—a metaphor, I think, to the fact that for all hislies and pranks and tricks, Ouma can’t quite lie about his good intentions atheart.

There’s also what little we know about DICE, if that’s anyindication as to what Ouma is like with the people he truly cares about. Whilenot much is certain about them, we do know for a fact that Ouma’s motive videorefers to them as “friends bordering on family, closer to him than anyone, hisabsolute favorite people in the entire universe.” Clearly then, Ouma is verymuch capable of valuing other people and doing things for their sake. Ratherthan being the “evil Supreme Leader” he pretended to be, he was simply a leaderof a group of pranksters—and he loved them very much. This also supports whatwe’ve theorized about Ouma being a very caring, loving person beneath thesurface, despite the fact that he tries just as hard to play the unfeelingstrategist as he does the evil villain.

In the end, it’s this side of Ouma that makes him soenjoyable to ship, in my opinion. There are things he would need to work onwhen in a relationship with just about anyone, but I think it’s a hugedisservice to Ouma’s character to imply that he would be “abusive” or “toxic”to someone he was with. He is, after all, someone who puts others needs abovehis own. Even when he acts like he knows best or does incomprehensible,confusing things, he always emphasizes that it’s “for everyone’s sake.” Hissacrifice in Chapter 5, and the fact that he died when he could easily haveavoided doing so by letting Momota and Maki die instead, shows that clearly, hewould rather put others above himself, even if it means getting himself killed.

That said, there are of course, Ouma ships that I’m not afan of, and which I do think stray into much riskier territory simply becausethey’re on uneven footing from the start. Gonta and Ouma as a ship is a primeexample—not only does Ouma manipulate Gonta into getting killed, but Gontatrusts him implicitly because he’s very naïve and caring, while Ouma is awarefrom the start that he’s treating Gonta like a pawn. Regardless of the factthat I do think Ouma liked Gonta as a person and thought of him as somethingclose to a friend, it’s true that there’s a power imbalance there, and that I’mnot comfortable with shipping them as a result.

But there are plenty of Ouma ships in which he’s on evenfooting with the other party, and which I find interesting and compelling.There’s saiouma, of course, in which Ouma wants for Saihara to chase after himand understand him, to play the detective to his “phantom thief.” I’ve listedplenty of reasons why I enjoy saiouma, including the fact that Ouma is one ofthe main characters to encourage Saihara and push him to grow stronger anddevelop, as well as the fact that it’s based on two characters struggling topuzzle each other out and understand each other.

There’s also oumami and kiibouma, as a few other examples.Ouma and Amami have vast potential, as two characters who wanted to “stop thekilling game,” and who had a lot in common but never got to interact much incanon. Ouma clearly found Amami mysterious and interesting, and would’ve likedto have known more about him, I think.

Meanwhile Kiibo and Ouma are both intentional parallels ofeach other, both of them deliberately set up to represent “hope” and “despair”in Tsumugi’s killing game while coming to subvert their expected roles. WhileOuma teases Kiibo and sometimes can be somewhat of an ass about it, he’s alwayscalled out on it by Kiibo, and most of their interactions are more likechildish banter than anything remotely mean-spirited.

At the end of Chapter 5, Kiibo is the only character whosays outright that he doesn’t think Ouma was lying about hating the killinggame, and who wants to “end the killing game” himself as a direct result ofseeing Ouma and Momota’s sacrifices. And like Saihara, Kiibo is the only otherpicture set aside on Ouma’s whiteboard—clearly, he had a hard time figuring himout too, considering Kiibo definitely had ties to the audience and was soobviously suspicious, but also so obviously had his own free will and sense ofindividuality. The two of them have potential for really interesting interaction,especially as they were put on deliberately similar footing for most of the game.

These are just a few examples, to say the least. There areothers, but this has already gotten very long, so I’ll stop. But I wanted toaddress this topic in full because it’s something very important to discuss, inmy opinion, and it’s important to try and note the difference between flaws andunhealthy behaviors and downright abuse.
