A little art about a headcanon of mine for Dragon and Sabo, and a little fanfic about it under the cut
"Dragon-san," a familiar voice, Sabo's voice came knocking from the door of the cluttered office. Dragon perked up, putting down the pen he's writing with- just a follow up rough plan for the revolutionary's next strike.
The door was opened and there was Sabo with a bleeding arm. Instinctively, Dragon reached for the cabinet on his desk, pulling it open to grab for a roll of bandages and a bottle of antiseptic.
Sabo sat in front of Dragon, reaching out his roughed-up arm, his face not showing a trace of pain. (Dragon always knew the surges beneath his mask anyways.)
Dragon sighed as he saw the gnarly wound on Sabo's arm. The boy had a knack on being risky, sometimes even too keen on self sacrifice. Even though being a revolutionary always costed a price, Dragon couldn't help but worry about Sabo's knacks.
"I got a little reckless with my plans, " Sabo offered a little charming smile to Dragon (cut out the reprimands just this time?)
"I always told you to be careful. You're too good to lose, " Dragon said (again, Sabo?).
Sabo offered another cheeky smile, "Next time," he said, as if Dragon never feared for his name written on the list of fallen revolutionaries in a mission report.
When Sabo first arrived in Baltigo, still wrapped with bandages all over, not even able to move his wounded limbs freely, he would only turn to Dragon to replace his bandages, any nurses who tried to replace it would only make him flinch violently.
Dragon tapped a cotton smeared with antiseptic liquid on his arm, following it up with the roll of bandages. Soon, after falling into the familiar act of wrapping Sabo's wounds, Dragon couldn't resist the nostalgia that went flying right to his head.
But of course, they understood (despite being concerned) , that Sabo was a child, a child that had no one familiar except for Dragon in an unfamiliar, new building far far away from his home island.
When his burns healed, and when he finally got to trust the nurses, it still became a habit. He would knock on Dragon's door or tug at his coat, show his wounds, and Dragon would pull out his cabinet and fish out a bottle of antiseptic liquid and some bandages. And there it was, a repeating pattern of tapping a cotton smeared with the antiseptic against Sabo's wounds and wrapping it up with soft bandages.
Dragon always thought of it as a comforting habit.
It was not rare that he would receive reports about his fallen men, people that had died for his own cause. And being here, bandaging Sabo, feeling the warmth of his skin, reminded Dragon that his Chief of Staff, his son, was still here, still alive. Still able to go knock on Dragon's office and offer a smile and a wound.
Sabo's small hiss of pain suddenly brought Dragon abruptly out of his daze. He softened his pace and grip, finishing wrapping Sabo's arm with tying the end, cutting the excess bandage with a small pair of scissors.
"Thank you, Dragon-san, " Sabo smiled, softly.
Dragon couldn't resist reaching his hand out and ruffling Sabo's hair, "Be careful next time," he warned.
Sabo's smile turned into a grin, "This time is just a slip up. "
Dragon couldn't help but smile back. Thin, but soft with fondness for his son sitting in front of him. He pulled his hand out of Sabo's locks of blonde and hope that tomorrow, his name wouldn't be written on the list of the fallen.

okay but listen. one piece au where everything happens the same way, as in luffy sees zoro for the first time and decides right there. that’s his person. that’s his soulmate.
and like their journey through east blue is totally the same but. luffy has, legally, been adopted by shanks before garp sent him to dadan’s. so like, shanks is his legal guardian just as much as dadan is, but no one really knows how to find the mountain bandits hideout, right? but shanks has a huge ship and a huge crew and technically luffy is still a minor so like. garp’s after him, he calls him every other day to tell shanks to keep luffy under control and shanks just. refuses to go against luffy’s dream.
AND THEN. mihawk is also somehow zoro’s guardian (the whole debacle where zoro and perona were sent to his castle happened when they were kids because I say so) but zoro still spent years with kuina and wants to uphold her dream and if that means he has to fight his almost-dad then so be it. so he becomes a pirate hunter to get stronger and mihawk just lets him, because he’s not about to betray his almost-son’s dream. baratie happens and he has no idea this newcomer strawhat has shanks’ hat and zoro on his crew but he won’t refuse a challenge from zoro and he still strikes him down and then lets him go because he sees the growth in him, and he wants zoro to get even better.
and maybe mihawk sees the way zoro and luffy exist in the same space, the way they don’t have to talk to understand each other, the way luffy lets zoro run towards his dream even if it could mean he has to see him die right before his eyes.
and it reminds him of himself and shanks, because they had a thing when they were younger - before shanks was captain and before mihawk became a warlord - and the way zoro and luffy gravitate towards each other is just so similar to what they had, except. Except luffy and zoro’s dreams can live together, are living together, so mihawk sees what could have been between him and shanks if they were the right person at the right time, like their almost-sons are.
AND that’s why mihawk brings luffy’s bounty to shanks. that’s why he stops for a drink. that’s why he spends the whole night hearing complaints about how the rest of luffy’s family wants him to look after him, but really, luffy would never forgive shanks if he got in the way of his dreams. and mihawk, too, talks about how it was to know that he was standing in the way of his own son’s dream. and then, because they understand each other now in a way they didn’t when they were younger and together, mihawk talks about what the relationship zoro and luffy seem to have. how it resembles what they had, but better, because they aren’t fighting each other - they are working together.
and that opens up a whole new way of seeing stuff, for shanks. because it wasn’t the right time, when they were younger and had different goals and expectations, but maybe that doesn’t mean him and mihawk are doomed for the start. maybe they can have something, too, maybe it was just a matter of the context they were in, maybe they were the right person for each other all along.

I know this is too good to be true but indulge me for a sec:
zoro and shanks having a blast by getting absolutely, shit-faced drunk on the day luffy becomes the king of pirates. they have a contest on who can drink more. i was rewatching the scene where mihawk visits shanks to tell him about luffy and shanks makes him drink up and my first thought was that damn he and zoro would get along well.
This is SO real. I love to imagine Zoro getting ready to meet Shanks and being a little bit nervous about it because that's the man his captain (boyfriend, because Zolu is canon in my little heart) admires so much. It's not that he wants to impress him or whatever, he doesn't care about that, but he wants to be worthy of being seen as Luffy's first mate in front of this man.
Then, he sees Shanks is a bit of a loser and he's just silly and they have a lot (a lot) of drinks together and they get along so well. Like, really. Shanks won't stop telling the crew stories about tiny kid Luffy and Zoro loves every second of it. Also, at some point, I'm sure Shanks does get a little bit serious and says Zoro is a good first mate for him and that he's sorry he has to deal with his shenanigans but he's sure at least it's fun, and Zoro couldn't agree more.

I'm not a parent, but can you imagine how psychotic Dragon would get if Sabo got hurt in his place. Like to some degree Sabo is worried that if Dragon were to die, the revolution would die with him, and Sabo was raised from a very young age to think of himself as expendable because of his parents, and that kind of thing can settle into the marrow of your bones and not go away no matter how much time passes. He would more than willingly stand in front of a brutal attack to defend Dragon, though Dragon is the last person in the world who'd ever need to be shielded. It's instinct for Sabo to protect, plus this is Luffy’s dad AND a member of the D clan. Dragon is important, Sabo isn't, so he'd happily take a hit in Dragon's stead. Queue his blood splattering across Dragon's face and Dragon just has a psychotic break because first of all he probably most definitely has ptsd, suddenly all he can see is Sabo crying against him because he can't open the gate to Grey Terminal, ten years old with half his face burned bloody and unconscious, and he just fucking snaps cuz that's not just a revolutionary or the chief of staff or his second in command that's his fucking kid and he's watched him grow up for the past twelve years, he can remember when Sabo barely reached his knee in height and now he's bleeding out because he, the child, was trying to protect Dragon, the parent. Nonono, that's not how this works and now Dragon has to commit homicide. "Would you kill for you child" he sure would! He knows Sabo can take care of himself but if he sees that blond brat fall in front of him he is going to descend to the lowest level of hell and bring whoever pulled the trigger with him.
