I know it's not technically a fairy tale, but do you happen to have any recs for retellings of Tam Lin?
--Siena
Unfortunately, no, since I haven't read any. However, I've heard good things about The Perilous Gard, which I believe draws from that fairy tale.

This comes from Book 2 Chapter Two.
Stamped on the front [of the coin] was King Delclis in profile, staring apprehensively at the Latin inscription encircling his head. Amarantha was used to seeing coins bearing the elegantly bearded face of the old King, Elystan’s father, who had abdicated last year. The presence of his young stepson Delclis made this monarch seem less real. She had met the original of that profile, years before, one afternoon at Endean, and now here he lay, flat and impersonal, meant to be traded away for composition books and ices and shoelaces…

Frank, I love that King's Quest Chapter One (A Knight to Remember) fanfiction you wrote! All the witty banter between Graham and Royal Guard Number One was just hilarious, but I liked how you didn't stop with making it funny. The underlying sense of how they true friends, not just a king and his guard, really shone through, and I liked how as the scene went on it became clear that Graham was keeping up the banter more to reassure No.1 than anything else. What gave you the idea for this scene?
Thanks! I was trying to do something sort of like a "breaking the fourth wall" parody, but it ended up getting away from me -- the fourth wall was getting smashed to smithereens by the end. (I don't know if I did that on purpose, or if I was just subconsciously following my muse)
It was originally a bit longer, and had a sequence where No. 1 says "Um, Your Majesty, we might want to move out of range of those arrows," in a surreal departure from the typical "fourth wall" dialogue. The final version just didn't work with that much dialogue, so I ended up cutting it. It's probably still floating around on my hard drive, somewhere.

Podfic: "Captive Crown" by GerbilofTriumph
A shabby narration of GerbilofTriumph's excellent King's Quest fanfiction, "Captive Crown," complete with outrageous attempts at accents and enough bloopers to start a drinking game (with um, raisin juice. There are too many goofs for the real stuff.) This wonderful fiction, full of courage, nightmares, and healing, is gratefully recorded and shared with permission of the author, @gerbiloftriumph. Go check out her awesome creative blog.
All seven chapters are available at the link above, but if you just feel like listening to the first chapter while you scroll, voila:

Big hugs to those who follow me whom I can't follow back right now! So many of you are lovely with fascinating blogs. I just tend to spend too much time on tumblr, and I'm tempted all the more if I follow too many people and my feed becomes that much longer. I'm not the first to use this phrase, but you are mutuals in my heart, and I do love it when we end up interacting. If you ever see @thewatercolours liking your posts, that's me having a nice scroll through your blog now and then.

Ken cleared his throat. “Madam?” Fully aware that she could probably see little more than his toes, he gave a sharp salute stamp with an ankle turn. Plausibly, it was the most visible way to show respect. More accurately, it was a chance to stamp at the queen for turning the throne room into the aftermath of a toddlers’ craft day.

If you are up for it - only if it takes your fancy - I'd love to see Maia at Edonomee the night he gets his lifechanging news.
[Id: two pencil drawings of maia drazhar from the goblin emperor. 1) from the shoulders up, maia clutching a letter and looking down at it in dread and concern. his hair is disheveled and coming out of its braid. 2) maia from the shoulders up styled cartoonishly, meant to look like the shocked meme of lisa simpson. he is sitting at a table and staring into space, mouth hanging open. end id]
he's uh...he's handling it well

I love your imaginary book rec idea!
Pick any or all that spark your interest - no pressure, and skip if none stand out to you.
"Mercator Must Walk the Plank" (Nautical comedy)
"The Wings of Hermes" - (1930's literary mystery)
"Cardinal's Map" (Literary fiction that people argue about whether it should be classed as fantasy)
"The Fourth Postscript" (Epistolatory fantasy)
"The Most Fascinating Lady of the Season" (Coming-of-Age)
Mercator Must Walk the Plank by E.G. Delaford
After reading a few too many tales of high seas adventure, Victorian gentleman John Quackenbush is inspired to purchase a ship and go in search of treasure. His ship is a wreck, his crew is inept, and he's not exactly sure how one reads a map, but the intrepid traveler remains undaunted, even as they battle storms, shipwrecks, and pirates, and often find themselves sailing in entirely the wrong ocean. After they rescue a sensible young woman from a shipwreck, she takes it upon herself to rein in the captain's flights of fancy and get them all safely home, but the Quack is not so easily controlled. He will have his adventure, and those on the ship can either join in the quest--or walk the plank.
The Wings of Hermes by Elizabeth Tern
Oxford don Joseph Quill prefers to remain safely ensconced in his books, but when he is called upon to authenticate a supposed piece of ancient Greek statuary, he suddenly finds himself at the center of a deadly web of intrigue that involves murder, theft, and letters that threaten vengeance from the gods of Greece themselves. Multiple shadowy parties are willing to kill for this statue, and if Quill doesn't uncover them soon, he may just be the next victim ushered into the afterlife.
Cardinal's Map by Dorothy Cannes
Miranda Zimmer, a nihilistic grad student, gets a summer job serving as secretary for John Cardinal, a reclusive old man who has not left his New York estate in decades. Miranda helps Cardinal to compile his magnum opus, an intricate portal fantasy about a man's quest to save a kingdom and find his long-lost love. Miranda becomes enchanted by the story--especially the intricate map of the world that Cardinal has been drawing for years-- and the man, whose zeal for the world gives her a new appreciation for life. Yet Miranda starts to suspect that for Cardinal, this book is not fiction--it's memory. Whether it's madness or metaphor, Cardinal is writing this tale as the chronicle of his life, the map meant to help him reconnect with the woman he once lost. Is Cardinal mourning his wife or planning a rescue? Can Miranda keep him grounded in the here-and-now, or is he doomed to be lost in the wilderness of his past?
The Fourth Postscript by A.B. Wright
Tellor, a young man seeking his fortune, dreams of finding the mythical city in the sky. Amnesh, an elven king, agrees to fund his journey, so long as Tellor sends back regular letters chronicling the adventure. As the journey progresses, Tellor sends updates about the wonders and terrors of his quest, while the king sends advice meant to help him get back home in one piece. Soon, a strong friendship binds the two men, and when Tellor's letters suddenly cease, Amnesh is driven to undertake a quest of his own.
The Most Fascinating Lady of the Season by Charlotte Irvin
Julia Blythe, a sheltered rector's daughter, is invited to stay with her uncle--a baronet--as a companion to her cousin Eliza, newly orphaned and returned from years living abroad. Eliza's life on the continent has given her wild habits, as well as beauty and charm that enchant the men around them. As Julia is dragged along in Eliza's orbit, the girls develop a friendship, even as Julia struggles to reconcile Eliza's wild ways with the more sedate morals of her childhood. But when scandal strikes, Julia and Eliza may both lose everything, including the men they were beginning to love.
