There was a plethora of smells in the ballroom. Perfumes and colognes, food and sweat fusing to become an overwhelming scent that surrounded MC’s senses. Their eyes stung at the exposure and their nose refused to keep working, hence them looking like an exhausted animal breathing through their mouth.
They looked for an exit, not caring if it was a balcony, a hallway or even the staff area, but everyone was so tall the only thing they could see was horns, wings, velvet vests and silky dresses. Tails lashed at their ankles, reaping the hem of their gown and scratching the skin underneath.
It was suffocating, too saturated for their tired eyes. They felt like the world was folding on itself and they were right in the middle of it. The floor tiles changed forms and bent beneath them.
Then, all of a sudden, an arm slipped around their waist and pushed them through the crowd, not stopping until the fresh air of the night hit their face and the noise became distant enough not to understand the voices.
Gloved hands turned them around, briefly tightening around their waist before caressing and cradling their face.
“Are you alright, my love?” Barbatos asked in deep worry.
It was only when MC’s eyes made contact with his that they realized where he had taken them. A secluded spot in one of the balconies filled with towers of Demonus bottles stacked in wine racks and mini freezers full of crushed ice. Vines and flowers covered the rails and the walls, giving them a sense of privacy, but there were a couple of servants carrying food and beverages here and there. They only stopped for a second to look at them with surprise and MC suddenly felt intensely embarrassed.
“My love?”
“Yes?”
He placed their hair behind their ears, raising his eyebrows as a silent question. MC knew what he’d said, but they didn’t know what to respond. Their heart beat fast and the air came out of their mouth in wheezes, which only distressed him further, but a few deep breaths kept them relatively calm.
His touch was warm, even with the gloves on, and the bony wings above his head rattled when they got closer to him, grabbing his shoulders in search of comfort.
“It just became too much for a second”
“Would you like to stay here for a while?”
“No, no…”
“No one will mind” he reassured, but they doubted his words.
Surely they’d lose the respect of higher ranked demons if they knew how quick they’d had to run away. Poor little human, so small, too overwhelmed with noises and lights to stay still, quiet and composed.
“They will understand”
A glint in his eyes broke his otherwise coolheaded expression and they finally got what he was trying to say.
He would make them understand.
Not wanting to dwell on the implications of that thought, MC shook their head and raised a hand to his hair, careful not to touch the base of the sensitive horns. They looked at each other for a few seconds in silence, slowly swaying in the melody of the distant music while the wind swirled around them.
The sound of cutlery broke their bubble and they only had time to put some space between them before a waiter came running towards one of the coolers looking for an ice bucket. He didn’t see them, but the interruption was enough to put MC on edge. Barbatos laughed at the sight.
“Are you sure you don’t want to stay, dearest?”
They hummed, nodding while intertwining their fingers with his and hiding their hands between their bodies.
The music from the ballroom stopped and guests started clapping and talking loudly. The musicians must had asked for an intermission. The doors to the balcony opened and demons began to come out, begging for fresh air and rest for their feet.
They were still somewhat hidden amongst the plants, but it wouldn’t take too long before one of them looked too close.
MC stepped away from Barbatos, not wanting to bring any attention to them, but was surprised when the demon grabbed their arm and pull them to his chest, keeping them close while he kissed them passionately. The sound of heels clicking on tiles got closer when MC felt their boyfriend lick their bottom lip, but just when they were starting to forget where they were, Barbatos retreated.
He wore a cheeky smile while he dried their mouth with a handkerchief and only chuckled when MC panted at him in search for more.
“This is getting crowed” he said casually. “Let’s search for a more private space. We don’t want you to get overwhelmed, don’t we?”
The leaves, the flowers and the shadows brought them anonymity while they scurried away, but it wouldn’t take too long before someone, a certain prince, would inevitably need him.
Better take advantage of the opportunity.

Halloween, 1986
You check yourself in the hallway mirror for what feels like the hundredth time in the span of ten minutes. You adjust the poofy sleeves for the nth time, fiddle with the hair pieces again, and make sure the necklace is well centered. You know you’re being ridiculous, but your blood feels like it’s full of static and you’re considering going back to the bathroom to wipe the blush off your cheeks. The heat in them makes it feel redundant.
You rush into the kitchen to look at the time on the stove before noisily making your way back to the hallway mirror to fluff up you hair. It’s not really your hair; Maggie from Genealogy somehow just happened to have the perfect clip-on hair extensions for you, that also just so happened to be curled just the way you needed. You’re honestly still shocked and still suspicious, but if there’s one thing you’ve learned this year, it’s to not look a gift horse in the god damn mouth.
When you check the time again, you huff and reach for the phone on the wall next to the fridge. You’ve just dialed the first three numbers when you hear the head-splitting buzz announcing someone’s arrived at the door downstairs.
You run to the front door, stuff a handful of twenties and a lighter in your bra and run out the door.
The stairs are an unexpected challenge—even when you grip as much of the gown’s skirt as you can, you nearly fall down three flights of stairs about five times.
When you finally manage to make it through the building‘s lobby, you have to take a second to just. Look at Eddie. Take him in, just for a bit.
It had taken weeks of pestering, convincing, and literally reciting essays to Eddie to get him to agree. Not only to do a couple's costume—that's too cheesy, he said, I have an image and reputation to maintain, he whined—but to dress up as fucking Jareth.
You're only human. It's not like anyone with a pulse can resist David Bowie.
And in this moment, staring dumbly at Eddie in a ballroom get-up, with straightened hair, you're not sure how you're supposed to resist him, either.
When Eddie looks up at the glass door and, consequently, at you, you choke on your own spit. You can hear him burst out into laughter, and the sound shocks you from your stupor. You burst out the door.
"Hey! I almost fucking died! Don't laugh at me!" You shout, smacking at his should with both hands.
"I yield, I yield!" he cries out, still laughing.
When he's finally recovered enough, and pulled you out of the way of the building's door, Eddie holds you at arms' length. It's his turn to stare at you now.
And stare.
And... stare some more.
You shuffle nervously on your feet, and clear your throat.
"H-hey, c'mon, you're making me feel like I'm doing something wrong."
"No," Eddie says, so forcefully and instantly that it makes you jump. "Shit, sorry, I mean—no, you're. You look..."
"Strange? Nerdy? Larger?" You emphasize the last word by patting down the many layers of your gown's skirts.
Eddie huffs at you like you've just said the most ridiculous thing. "Magical. You look magical," He says, quietly, moving his hands from your shoulders to your face. "Absolutely enchanting. Bewitching. Mes—"
"Oh god stop," you groan, slapping his hands away and hiding your face behind your own hands. "You've made your point, I'm sufficiently flustered."
"Perfect," Eddie replies, and you can hear the smug tone in his voice. When you peek through your fingers, he's wearing the most obnoxious smug grin and crosses his arms. "That shade of pink looks better on you."
You make a gagging sound but pull at one of his arms to wrap your own around.
"Come on, nerd. We've got booze to drink and teenagers to pretend we're chaperoning."
Eddie starts walking first as he's chuckling.
"Please, they're going to be chaperoning you."

The Enterprise was going to be stationed over the Starbase 515 for a few weeks, upon which for Linda had meant taking shore leave off the ship. This was her home after all, born and raised on the Starbase, a young girl whose family afforded her many comforts and as a young medical student notoriety as well.
There were plenty of reasons to an assortment of emotions, namely the range between eager to nervous. She would be seeing her family for the first time in a few years, and she had someone to introduce to them. Her brother, Tag, she was explicitly eager for him to meet Leonard.
On top of that, she may, more or less, have promised the Captain the chance to meet her father and possibly play poker with him and his room of associates who settled on the starbase for one reason to the next; for research, to work, to teach (which really was retirement in her father's opinion).
Today bordered on nerves because as talk about what she would be doing on the Starbase, so came talks about dates, double dates, namely today; she knew a place that had always supplied the best wine and dancing to be had . The nerves came more from the accompaniment of the other couple joining them. Linda's never done a double date before.
❝ You're gonna be hearing me say this a lot, but there is at least a thousand persons between my mother and my father that know the Carters. ❞ She warns to the group of them, though she doubts that'll run probably tonight unless the bartender was one and same from when she was a student, sipping whine and complaining along with her fellows about one thing to the next. Subsequentially, that meant they would know Linda.
❝ I'll see about getting you in on the melting of great minds, or whatever old Dad calls poker nights, Cap- JIM. ❞ She need not be so formal here, but it's definitely something that's adding to the nerves. Carol, Jim, and Leonard know her as Doctor Carter, while here she would be Doctor Carter's daughter, daughter of her mother one of the upper class socialites living on the base, and than all of Linda's achievements came after. ❝ First thing's first my family needs to meet Leonard, but that's another day's worries. ❞ Hand tightens its grip on Leonard's, and it's the first indicator that she's flustered more than she could say right now. Partners over ship captains when it came to meeting the family, but she was sure that Jim would get a seat at poker.
❝ Well, this is the place ⸻ Top shelf wine and the place to bitch about Nurse Barkers for fresh-faced medical professionals. ❞
