I've identified as ace for about 5 years but for me I don't feel proud about it? I want to...

I'm trans and also ID as bi, so people don't really get how I can be bi and ace... So I don't make a big deal about my asexuality and even when I'm talking about my identity, or anyone is. My asexuality never comes up.

I don't know if you can relate to this at all really but my question is:

How did you come to accept your asexuality? Was it a struggle for you? And do you have any advice for someone that's shunned that part of themself for so long they've no idea how to even think of being proud of it?

I am currently only functioning with the one label. "Asexual" is my thing! Yay! I have my flag! I find my flag in gifsets and art and buttons and things! Cool! [points at the greyscale-and-purple] Look, it me!

I might be aromantic as well? But I'm less connected with that label, and not really sure if it fits. It probably does? Might not? idk. Either way, I don't see the aro flag and go "It me!" And tbh, that's totally fine. I can have parts of myself that are exciting and that I connect with and that make me proud. And I can have parts that are like "You know, idk, that's not really a big deal to me. It's part of me, sure, but it doesn't really impact me right now."

You don't have to be OUT AND LOUD AND PROUD of every bit of yourself. Some things can just kinda be there.

I don't really make a Big Deal about my sexuality IRL, either. I wear an ace ring because it makes me happy, and because I've found and been found by a few other aces that way. I have an ace flag pin that I made, because it signals others that I am Part Of The Group, Too. I have never really come out in the dramatic sense, never sat anyone down and explained to them my ace-ness. But if they pick up on the symbols I wear, cool! But nbd if they don't.

Most times, my pride is less prideful and more comfortable. Identifying as ace just makes me feel right in my own head and life and how I relate to the world.

The times when I have felt pride is around other people. Participating in covering this website in rainbows during June makes me feel pride, because I'm doing it alongside others. Talking to other aces and swapping urls of etsy shops that sell black rings makes me feel pride, because I've made that connection and found another person like me.

And I'll tell you what, I have never felt more prideful than I did when a friend of mine came to me and told me that she'd recently started identifying as ace, and it's because she had seen me and just how normal I made it just by talking about it. That by watching me, she realized that what she was feeling was normal and actually pretty cool and not wrong or scary at all.

But yeah. Pride is cool. Being comfortable is better. Pride follows that pretty easily. You probably know this better than I do, with your being trans! When you find something that seems to click your soul into place like a puzzle piece, you feel that moment of "Ahhh.... yes, that's right" like a good warm blanket. Flags can come later.

I can expand on the story later, but basically how I accepted my asexuality (after several months of waffling "am I? no. but am I? i mean. nah. but maybe?") was that I essentially said to myself "I am asexual. And that's pretty cool."

I'm not sure how big of a HTTYD community exists here but I wanna post my findings anyhow:

Mainly due to an old and often very negative server I was in I've seen the argument over whether or not the Slithersong and Deathsong are the same dragon a lot, and well I've found a model resource website that actually has good renders of both models.

So I am here to prove that they are different species but definitely related!

And this is what I believe to be it's smaller cousin, the Slither Song

Now right off the bat there's coloration differences of course but here's over all everything that differs between the two:

I believe the slither song to be a smaller cousin to the death song, preferring more tropical or densely wooded environments compared to it's primarily rocky island and ravine dwelling relative. Thus the slither song is smaller and is most likely built for a life closer to the ground and under tree cover with it's darker colors, moving and slinking along tree branches that can support it's weight and perhaps being mistaken for a serpent thus giving it it's name.

In short though, the two species are different dragons - not a case of sexual dimorphisim, not the same thing but blue - simply two rather closely related species that are different the moment you look at the details.

Canyon Lake, TX 2023

I meant to make a post about this trip sooner but never got around to it lol

Anyway, my family and I went to Canyon Lake, TX, in December 2023. It's about 40 miles from San Antonio for those who aren't familiar. There are not a lot of activities to do here; it is mostly just a pretty place to go and relax.

Day 1 12/17/2024

After about a 4-hour drive, we arrived at our Airbnb and got unpacked. Even though we weren't near the lake, we still had an amazing view from the house: huge hills covered in trees whose leaves ranged from green, red, and yellow.

The last time I was in the Texas Hill Country, I didn't see any deer or other wildlife, but this time I saw some! A group of deer came out of the bushes while I was checking out the rest of the rental house. I grabbed my camera and took some pictures.

I have never been able to successfully take a photo of a deer before. They always run away before I can get the shot, and I'm not really a wildlife photographer, so I don't have the right lens to get close up. But these guys walked up so close to the house deck, all I had to do was stand perfectly still. ^_^

Day 2 12/18/2024

So to start the day, we went to a trail that was behind our Airbnb. We walked around and it had a nice view but it was pretty much just a big circle lol

Since there wasn't much here, we went to the main attraction: The Canyon Lake!

Canyon Lake is a reservoir on the Guadalupe River. The construction of the dam was finished in 1964 and serves as flood control and as a water supply for communities near the dam.

The wind was blowing hard against my face as I walked across the dam. When I looked forward, I could hear the wind, the people, and the cars down below, but when I looked to the side and faced the shimmering blue lake, everything went quiet. The way the harsh wind hit my ears literally blocked out everything else.

This gave me one of those feelings that you can't really explain or understand. My mind was completely clear—no weight, no tension, just nothing. Complete non-existence

After walking around the lake, I sat on the rocks and took some more photos. The water was so blue and contrasted perfectly with the white rocks.

Day 3-12/19/2024

This was our last day, so we decided to go on a cave system tour. Unfortunately, I didn't get any good pictures here since we were part of a larger group and it was quite dark lol. It was very interesting and a nice way to rap up the trip.

This was a very pleasant little vacation, especially since I have not gone anywhere since the start of covid. It was nice to get out and go to a different place lol

hi tumblr user checkers-dances. i write to you from my death bed. i fear i may not make it past this winter.

JOKES ASIDE. ive been sick the past few days. its really not that bad but im dramatic and also havent been genuinely sick in years so i have mostly stayed on my bed and done nothing but watch hour long video essays. if im not doing that, im watching mx videos. in any case, because ive been using kpop to Cope, i remembered this one youtube trend where people came up with like a whole idea for a kpop group. in a lot of ways its kind of like making your own superm, but im less interested in that aspect and more on trying to think about the more technical side of it. so because im dying and in need of fun, and also it was just a lot of fun coming up with my idea for an nct alternative, i've been thinking about what i would do if i had to manifest a kpop group out of thin air. here at incest entertainment, what type of music can we offer to the market?

i'm still not super sure of what route i would go but i've established a couple of ideas and once again, im smarter and cooler than any real kpop company.

-we're going with 7 members. i think that's kind of a perfect number, not too much and not too little.

-one thing i know for sure is that i need at least one member with creative inclinations. preferably we would have multiple guys because i think it'd be cheaper than having to always rely on outside producers probably? but also because here at incest entertainment we want our artists to have as much artistic freedom as possible <3 and because i do have a bit of a vision for what i want this group to be, i need to have strong communication with the idols who will be performing the songs, and i think a good way to go about that is having at least one of them who is also involved in the music.

-so i want the group to have a really strong concept. i think we are in desperate need of more kpop music videos with larger storylines (and those storylines would be even connected to the lyrics of the songs themselves). i'm still not entirely sure what the concept would be but it'd be very story driven and it'd have kind of mystery to it.

-so here's the most important part that i've come up with so far. it's by far the most unrealistic one, but if a group ever did this i think it'd be really fun. so i was thinking about how fun it was to overthink the mx music videos and try to come up with a coherent theory, and because i'm going to be pushing for a narrative i obviously want to give fans stuff to chew on and speculate on. and i was thinking about what would be a good way to do this. and then i fucking realized. let's make a fucking arg. let's throw weird code into the videos that leads to like a secret website where the fans can solve puzzles and figure shit out. i think making that aspect more interactive could be really interesting.

-to connect with the last point, i think a great way to push this would be with the physical albums. part of the appeal of physical albums in kpop is that they come with a lot of other neat things. so the albums can include items that are connected to the story, like idk. documents with info on them that they can decipher for themselves.

ANYWAY, im tired and i don't think im going to elaborate more on this, but i like this basic idea. sadly, incest entertainment isn't real and neither is my imaginary boy band.

HELP, NOT INCEST ENTERTAINMENT....INC-ENT for short. Is 7 rlly the magic number or is it just the number most frequently found in groups u like 🧐🧐🧐? THE OVERTHINKING MX ERA...listen I think this group should at least have a coherent storyline they're going for to avoid another watch/blue flower event 😭😭. Maybe it could be a scifi arg since there already are scifi concepts in kpop, or maybe it's a more historical thing. Personally I think if the company is called incest entertainment there should be incest gimmicks in the group, like them pretending they're all related despite looking nothing alike. Maybe there's even a time travel gimmick in the story so they're all each other's ancestors at diff points in the timeline. Much to think abt (help I said no more watch/blue flower stuff and then immediately went on to spawn this concept 😭)

Thorny Topics

When it comes to the subject of what is cultural appreciation and what is cultural appropriation, the latter often comes off as a performative interest in something. That’s from my experience appropriating Chinese culture to feel less western, until I started frequenting Chinese websites more often and began incorporating more hanfu influences in earnest. The former is a sincere interest in something foreign, albeit one that’s either anchored in respect or tempered by it. Sometimes the line between the two is blurred, but ultimately the latter will lead to the former if the interest is sincere enough.

As for Avatar: The Last Airbender and its Asian pretensions, somebody said that its creators primarily based its overall atmosphere from Hong Kong martial arts films and anime with Southeast Asian, Northeast Asian and South Asian cultures as window dressing. It’s pretty much got traditional Chinese characters pat, but not so much when it comes to adhering to a rather westernised philosophy and understanding of things. Per Chinese cultural logic, the waterbenders would be in the north and firebenders based in the south. The airbenders would be in the east, since that’s wood’s cardinal direction and wind’s subsumed under it.

If because both of them penetrate things and that plants give off oxygen, the metalbenders would be in the west and earthbenders at the centre. Also the waterbenders should wear black, since that’s the colour water’s associated with. As in it gets real deep and dark when it comes to the ocean, white with metal (silver, gold and iron when you think about it), green and blue with wood (these colours were only given separate words and characters later on in China’s linguistic history), yellow and brown with earth and predictably red with fire. Actually regarding green and blue being both associated with wood, it can be pulled off in a way that’s reminiscent of flowers and fruits.

Especially flowers like violets and cornflowers as good references, but that involves being more deeply influenced by Chinese culture or at least have a deeper understanding of it than they’re used to or think they do. Supposing if the Philippines were to become more deeply influenced by China at this point in time, it wouldn’t entirely undo western influence and at best it would minimise it. It would, however, lead to more organic borrowings not just due to a growing admiration for China and Chinese culture, but also and most importantly how close the Philippines is to China. So strongly around the corner enough to have these borrowings take off real well.

It could even happen anytime soon if America stops being a superpower for good, but it could take off in a way it couldn’t fully be with Spain due to how close these two are. Spain had to rule the Philippines through Mexico, but with China it could take off more easily due to it being a stone’s throw away from us. Similar things would happen if the Philippines became more heavily influenced by Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia, all three of them are also a stone’s throw away compared to Latin America if one were to consider both logistics and geographical proximity. This would be China’s advantage over America in many ways.

I’m getting off-topic here but you should get my point where if something’s actually influenced by another country, especially on a larger scale, then the cultural borrowings would come off more organically and naturally. This is something that I feel the Avatar stories lack, if because it was written by people who never lived in a community or country that’s influenced by China in any way. It becomes evident in the philosophical undertones of the story so far, there’s not a lot of characters respecting anybody who’s older than them.

Well as far as I know of since I’ve just started reading the comics, when it comes to bats in Chinese culture they’re actually associated with luck and happiness as the Chinese word for bat is homophonous with another word for fortune or something like that. Dragons in Chinese thought are linked with weather and water, in fact there’s as much a link between dragons and snakes in China as there is in the west because not only do Chinese dragons look snakelike but that snakes are referred to as little dragons. Additionally and something that should be noted more often, dogs were historically used in China for rodent control.

Because a huge chunk of the Avatar stories seem to owe Chinese culture, right down to the use of Chinese characters it’s odd why there’s not a single dog used to hunt down rats in those stories. It’s like that in Ancient China, since this happened before the arrival of cats there. It still is the case with its neighbours like the Philippines and Indonesia, they may be influenced by Chinese culture but only certain aspects of it. Especially the ones that can be easily commodified, not so much the other aspects that go against western stereotypes of Chinese and East Asian cultures. I even think if Avatar was created by somebody who’s actually Chinese, it’d turn out differently to the point of being alien.

Which says a lot about Avatar being made by people living in a place that’s not impacted by China in any way.

Personal life story time...

When I was fourteen I was sandwiched between a deeply Catholic family & and deeply Catholic school, so coming out on any grand scale was still a pipe dream. A larger queer community was a myth to me and my underdeveloped prefrontal cortex.

I had known I liked girls since I was eleven though, and one of the ways I worked to escape my anxiety over this secret was books. Big problem though: almost every book at the time was full of straight protagonists with their gay (male) bestie. In the three years leading to fourteen I had memorized the YA shelves of B&N, and developed a superpower that I carry to this day of knowing which will be queer based on the cover.

One day when at B&N doing my usual rounds of the YA shelves a guy approached me. He must've been only twenty or so, but to me he was fully an adult. An adult with blue eye shadow, blue nails, and an otherwise generic outfit. He asked me if I recommended anything.

I can be a little uncanny to interact with, especially any younger version of me. I stuttered something about really liking one book & handed over a copy of "Aristotle & Dante" before booking it to another aisle.

What if I read him wrong? What if he is offended? What if he thinks that book that I love so so much is dumb?

He walked over and asked me if it was gay and I said yes.

We got to talking. I think I have the exact details of this conversation in my journal from the time, but the gist was just that he is also gay and little lonely me spilled my whole heart out to him. He recommended American Gods to me, which kicked off my obsession with Neil Gaiman. He also gave me a copy of his album. He had performed on American Idol.

I can't remember if it was before or after this interaction that I cut my hair, but this interaction is the reason I like to be visibly queer. If I can be the visibly queer adult to let a kid know there is a life after all the bullshit then I've done some good.

I've wanted to reach out to him since that day, but his band seems to no longer be together and I cannot find any social media of his. All I can find are his old American Idol clips as well as a website listing his current phone number and home address.

Oh, you though this was some touching story about finding some hope in your youth? No. It is the horrors of the internet. What am I meant to do with this man's home address? Bruh. He is one very creepy phone call away. Nope. Not gonna do that. How did you find me? Google. Seems like an awful conversation.
