"everyone cared about ukraine and no one cares about palestine" a) are you sure everyone cared or cares? b) could we stop comparing ukraine to um. anything?
i am not saying that ukraine didn't get support but it's nowhere as bright as it appears to be and i want palestine to get the same but i don't think that mentioning ukrainians will help anyone

I'm tired of seeing antisemitism on my dash, in all its subtle forms. War is an atrocity, and Israel is not unique in that. Where is the outrage against Russia's ongoing genocide of Ukrainians? What about China's genocide of Uyghurs? What of all the other atrocities being committed around the world? Why is there *so much attention* devoted to hating Israel and seeking, not an end to the conflict, but the end of Israel? Is it just that they're a little country, an easy target to potentially dismantle, compared to the big fish of Russia and China?
Keep calling out the atrocities, by all means, but for the love of humanity maybe broaden your targets and reduce your own genocidal wishes?
Any ideology that says: "They did horrible things so 'they' [the group they belong to] all deserve to die horribly" is an evil one.

hey babes, for the drabbles in the inbox post all I can think of is price with a breeding kink so upset he's "too old to give you a baby" only for him to end up with a wife pregnant with their 2nd baby
Fifth time, sixteenth test, and he's fuming. He doesn't even look at you, and you feel bad, when he's pacing back and forth around the house, deeply in his thoughts. Normally, you'd try to hug him, like the last times, but somehow, you can't do it now. There's something wrong with his mind, and you just can sense that, even if he's not telling you anything; being with him prepared you enough for moments like these. He's a captain, the head of the team, usually stressing about things himself.
"John, could you finally talk to me?" you ask after another ten minutes, when enough is enough; he suddenly turns around in your direction, like he finally acknowledges that you're here. Apologetic look on his face makes your heart break even more.
"'m sorry, missus." He's quick to sit next to you on the couch, kissing your hand a few times, with hope you're gonna forgive him for ignoring you.
It's what he usually does, and it always breaks your facade, but now you're not mad. Rather, confused, but you don't talk about it with him, when he smiles into your lips and drapes a blanket over you. You two just cuddle on the couch, watching some ridiculously old documentary about war, when he decides to pop the question.
"Why aren't you with someone younger?"
To say you are shocked, would be an understatement; completely bamboozled, you look at Price, your eyebrow cocked. "The fuck are you on?"
He sighs, as he looks down at you; it feels like he doesn't want to fight, but he genuinely asks, which makes you feel weird even more. "Simple question."
You prop yourself up a little, to take a better look at your husband. "Because I love you, and that's settled?"
"Someone younger would give you a baby," he mutters under his breath, as his eyes are on the TV again. John's implication shoots right through you, like a bullet, sharp and hurtful, but not that much for you, as for him. You're quick to sit on his lap fully, to bring his attention to you.
"It's definitely not your fault, John. It might be as well something with me, you know?" you frown, your fingers tracing his bearded jawline, as he still doesn't look at you.
"I waited too long, and now there's the consequences of it." His tone is hard, like he didn't hear your explanation before, and he continues to blame himself for it. Your heart sinks. "'m failin' you, love. If I'd meet you earlier, it would be different. Or if you'd be with someone else, maybe he would give you kids."
"None of that," you say, grabbing his face, to make him look at you. He opens his mouth to say something, but you're quick to put a finger on his lips to shush him; he already told you enough to make you want to do a monologue on him. "We're gonna have kids, even if it will take years, do you hear me, John Price?"
"Affirmative," he replies, kissing you a few times. On lips, cheeks and nose – you learned that doing it this way soothes him. Makes him less nervous than he already is. "I wouldn't blame you, if you'd want to—"
You don't even try to talk to him this time; you just kiss him, interrupting his intrusive thoughts with hope that he'll focus on something else. It's not a surprise when he takes the bait, and he's quick to pick you up in his arms, while you just giggle, knowing that he takes you to bedroom.
Three years later, he's off at deployment, when you learn that you're pregnant again, with your second child. 9 weeks, your gynecologist says, when you look at the scan, thinking how happy you are right now. Tears pricks in the corners of your eyes when you're in your car, taking deep breaths before you'll call your husband.
A lot of thoughts are going inside your head; should you tell him now? He's on the mission, probably doing important things, maybe he doesn't want to be interrupted? Yet, it is an important thing, something that he waited to hear for the longest time, having doubts if he's ever gonna be a father— and now, he's about to be a father for the second time.
"Love, are you okay?"
You blink twice, when you hear him through you phone; you don't even know when you called. "Yeah, baby. I'm okay, why?"
"Been askin' you how's your day, and you tell me nothin'. Got me worried for a second," he laughs, and for some reason, his laugh completely calms you. Before, you were a little scared to even call him, interrupt whatever he was doing.
Now? Now, you're more than excited to tell him the news, since you have time, and your firstborn is with his grandma.
"I'm okay. I promise," you reply warmly, smiling to yourself, as you take a peek at your stomach. You don't have a bump yet, but you smile nonetheless at the thought that, if everything will go well, in following months you're gonna have a bump. "Are you busy?"
"Just got back to base. Will be there for a while," he hums. "What is it, missus?"
"You should sit."
"…everything's alright, yes?"
"Yes, but you should sit. And, turn the camera on, please?"
He doesn't even question your request; in a minute, you see his face – happy and confused in the same time, while you grin the widest you possibly can. You felt joy this big back when you were just a kid, getting your Christmas gift.
And, now you're the one who delievers the gift.
"You're in the car? Thought you're gonna be home," he speaks up, and you have to hold back a laugh.
"I had to see a doctor, and—"
"—you had to see a doctor? You told me you're okay, love. Is it our little man? Baby, I'm—"
"—I'm pregnant, John." Words fall from your mouth.
"What?"
"I'm pregnant," you laugh, as you show him the ultrasound on camera, the closest you can. "Nine weeks. I'm back from my gyn, that's the doctor I needed to see."
"You're not pulling my leg, are you, love?" he asks, and when you shake your head with excitement, he laughs. He laughs so happily, and he even stands up for a few moments before sitting again. "A week, and 'm gonna be back. Is it okay?"
"A week?" you raise your eyebrow. "You're supposed to be another two weeks on the mission, and—"
"—I'd like to spend it with my wife, and my two babies, alright? A week won't harm anyone," he whispers lovingly, the corners of his eyes crinkling. "We have to talk about so many things."
And the fact you had to try so many times for the first baby, is just a faded memory.

Chapter 10
Monday, October 21 Ninth week of the semester
On Monday morning you were flustered and nervous before you even left your house. You’d barely slept, tossing and turning all night because you couldn’t stop thinking about the conversation that awaited you. You knew Joel would seek you out, and you knew you’d been short with him over text.
You knew you might be assuming the worst, but every time you tried to talk yourself out of it you heard his voice again — placating you, convincing you that you were seeing things. Telling you not to worry. He spent two years training you to second guess yourself and even now, five years out of that relationship with a lot of therapy behind you, it was hard to push the voice away.
You ended up having to rush out of the door after uselessly dithering over your worries and your outfit. You were almost late, again. You tried to put it all aside as you walked from your garage to your building that morning, taking deep breaths in time with your steps. Joel isn’t like Matt. They have nothing in common. The idea was reassuring on its face, but didn’t really help. You tried to focus on getting to your office and the work you needed to do that you’d accidentally left behind on Friday in your haste to get away from campus.
As you entered the quad and your building came into view, you realized something was wrong. There was a large group of men in hard hats milling around outside, and they had roped off your building at a distance of about 15 feet. You felt your heart rate pick up. What now?
As you approached the building, you noticed a familiar set of shoulders. Joel was standing on the outside of the crowd, arms crossed, brows furrowed. He wasn’t in a vest or hardhat this time. And the same woman from Friday, the one you were so worried about — she was standing right next to him. Your breath caught in your throat as you froze.
You needed to get closer to see what was going on, and at the same time, you needed to get as far away from here as possible. The warring impulses pinned you in place on the path. You tried to breathe and decide what to do but your brain felt like it was static — white noise and nothing else.
Just as you managed to shift your weight, Joel noticed you. He looked, well… Joel was always happy to see you, you realized in that moment. Always smiling, chin up, shoulders relaxed. But right then he looked apprehensive, too. You knew that was probably your fault, but that voice in your head that sounded like Matt told you maybe it was because he was caught, and he knew it. You shook it away and took a deep breath before closing the distance between you and him. Joel met you in the middle.
“Mornin’, darlin’, I’m sorry about all this—” A loud BANG from your building interrupted him and your eyes widened as a plume of smoke seemed to erupt from the roof.
“Joel, what—” you gulped. “What’s going on?” He reached out to put his hand on your elbow, but you stepped away. The look on his face as you pulled away from him hurt — it was disappointment and worry and rejection, all at once. It hit you like a punch to the stomach but you steeled yourself against it. “I have to get in there, Joel! I need—” BANG. The sound interrupted you again. You winced.
Joel was shaking his head when you looked back to meet his gaze. “You can’t go in right now, I’m sorry. There’s an issue with the ventilation and the gas line, they’re tryin’ to get it cleaned up. Mostly done now but it hasn’t been cleared yet.”
You felt dizzy. Joel was looking at you like you’d broken his heart just by stepping away from him a moment before, and the woman whose mere presence had set off all of your insecurities was standing just five feet away, watching the entire painful interaction. You took in a shaky breath and realized you felt tears gathering at the back of your eyes. No, you refuse to cry. Not here.
“Joel, I— I have to get in there! I have class in less than half an hour, everything I need is in my office. What—” you realized you were panicking and tried to take a deep breath. You knew, somewhere in the back of your mind, that you could handle class without getting to your office. But this was just one more thing on top of all of the stress you’d felt all weekend, and it was one too many. Your pitch rose as you babbled and you knew your hands were shaking.
Joel watched you, and you saw him start to reach out before cutting off the movement. He curled his hand into a fist at his side and his jaw set as he seemed to come to a decision.
“What is it that you need?” Something about the intensity of his gaze compelled you to answer his question.
“Just— just the papers I left by my keyboard. But Joel—” you opened your mouth to say it wasn’t that important, you were just stressed, it would be fine, but he had already turned. “Joel, wait!”
He waved his arm back at you, yelling that he’d be back, and disappeared into the crowd. “Shit.” You cursed and closed your eyes, tilting your head back.
You heard the woman, who was still standing next to you, clear her throat.
“So, I’m Tess.” You opened your eyes to see her holding her right hand out to you with an amused look on her face. “You must be the gorgeous professor who doesn’t hate Joel’s guts. At least, he thought you didn’t.” She quirked an eyebrow at you and you blinked in surprise.
“I, um—” you realized you were leaving her hanging and reached your hand out to shake hers. “He did say that was me… yes.” You felt unmoored by this sudden friendly conversation. You realized she’d probably just watched that entire interaction you’d had with Joel.
Tess seemed to consider you, tilting her head to the side, taking you in. Suddenly her eyebrows rose and she smiled. “Joel’s my best friend. Has been for about 10, 15 years now.”
You blinked at her, perplexed. “What?”
She put her hands on her hips and sighed. “Look, I’m just going to be direct. I’m getting the feeling you got a different impression of my relationship with Joel, when we saw you on Friday. So you know, just letting you know. He’s like my annoying older brother.” She raised her eyebrows at you, waiting for you to get it.
Shit.
You suddenly sucked in a deep breath and then laughed, a little hysterically. “Shit.” You said it  out loud this time. “I—“ you shook your head, glad Tess was still smiling at you. “I’m such an idiot. I just—” you wiped your hands down your face and sighed. “I don’t want you to think I thought he was that kind of guy. This… it just reminded me of an, um, issue from my past. And I guess I overreacted. But I knew it wasn’t like him, even without, um. Knowing him that well, I guess. I was going to try to talk to him today.” You were rambling, and you knew it. You weren’t sure why you were explaining it to her, other than just not wanting her to think badly of you. His best friend. Shit.
She nodded. “I figured. From the way he’s been talking about you, I knew you were… well. Sounded like the two of you were on the same page.” You nodded. “He’s in pretty deep already, you know.”
“Yeah, I just… just got all in my head about it, I guess. I’ll, um. I’ll talk to him about it, like I said. Explain myself.” You cleared your throat nervously. “I’m, um. I’m in pretty deep, too.” Tess smiled in response, clearly amused.
Any further conversation was interrupted by Joel shouting your name from closer to the building. You looked up to see him jogging towards you, holding a familiar stack of papers up in his left hand. He was smiling at you, expression hesitant but full of hope. Your breath caught.
He came to a stop right in front of you, and held the papers out to you. You felt stunned. You looked down at them, but made no move to take them before looking back up to meet his eyes. His smile started to fade the longer you stood there and he looked even more unsure. You could see his face starting to close off to you. You couldn’t stand it.
“I thought you were dating Tess.” The words tumbled out of you before you could stop them, needing to do or say anything you could to stop him looking at you like that. He blinked, and his mouth dropped open. You heard Tess snort from somewhere to your left, but you couldn’t look away from Joel.
“You—” he started, and seemed to work his jaw, looking for the words. “Ah, no, darlin’. I’m not.”
You nodded, faintly. “I know. She told me.”
“I, um—” Joel thrust the papers towards you again. “I grabbed your papers for you.” You took them this time, almost on autopilot, looking down at them in your hands. You paused, for a moment too long, before looking back up at him. His expression had fallen even further and your heart clenched in your chest. “Darlin’, I’m not sure what happened, but I’m real so—”
This was too much. You sprang into motion, and he cut himself off to watch as you stuffed the papers in your bag, unthinking, and dropped it right there on the ground. Threw it down, really. He watched you with a perplexed look on his face.
“You’re not dating Tess.” He shook his head, still confused. Eyed your bag where it landed on the ground, looking like maybe he wanted to pick it up for you. You stepped closer to him.
“And you just ran inside the building to grab these papers for me. Which weren’t even that important.” In pretty deep. You heard Tess’ words echo again in your head.
Joel blushed. “Darlin’, I—”
You didn’t let him finish. You reached out, hands still a bit shaky, and grasped the front of his plaid shirt. Before he could react, you hauled him forward and leaned in to meet his lips with your own. Hard.
You heard and felt Joel breathe in through his nose in surprise, and for a moment neither of you moved — you were frozen, eyes closed, your lips pressed together, no other point of contact except your hands clutching his shirt. You started to wonder if you had it all wrong, after all, if maybe he didn’t—
And then Joel seemed to burst into motion. His hands slid around your shoulders and back, bringing you closer and holding you against him. He tilted his head and deepened the kiss, and suddenly you weren’t aware of anything else, not anymore. Nothing but the way he held you in his arms and the way he stole your breath, moving his lips softly against yours.
You weren’t sure how long the kiss had lasted — it could have been 10 seconds or 10 minutes — when Tess cleared her throat and you stumbled back from each other in surprise. Joel’s right hand stayed huge and warm on your hip as you stared at each other. His hair was tousled — did you do that? — and his lips were swollen and red. Your eyes locked on to them, unable to look anywhere else. You watched as he smiled, all hesitance and uncertainty gone from his expression.
“I believe one of you needs to go teach, and the other needs to go oversee what’s going on with the building.” Tess sounded a bit smug. You blinked.
“Shit!” You exclaimed, again. “What time is it?” You finally turned your eyes from Joel, but didn’t step away.
Tess rolled her eyes, but she was still smiling. “You have five minutes, teach. Better get going.” You nodded.
When you turned back to Joel, you found he was still looking at you. “I have to go, I have class but Joel, later? We’ll talk?” You smiled, you couldn’t stop yourself from smiling, and raised your hand to touch his shoulder again. He nodded. His gaze held you in place like you were magnetized.
“Ahem.” Tess was really laughing at the two of you now.
“Right! Ok, I’m going.” You bent down to gather your bag, wincing as you got a look at the mess it had become inside. Joel’s hand finally fell from your hip and you felt the loss of its warmth. “Later?”
He nodded and spoke for the first time since you’d kissed him. His voice was even deeper than usual and it rumbled over you, sending a shiver down your spine. “You can count on it, darlin’.”
You took a few steps backwards, eyes locked on Joel’s, before turning. “It was nice to meet you, Tess!” She called back the same, and then as you started to walk faster to get to your class, you heard her start to tease him.
“Hates your guts, huh?”
“Can it.” His sarcastic tone and her laughter was the last thing you heard as you turned the corner and started to jog towards your building. You grinned, feeling lighter than you had in days.
You floated through your class like you had no worries in the world — aside from the stack of assignments stuffed in your bag that you hadn’t actually been able to grade. Your students didn’t seem concerned, but they did notice your ridiculously good mood. You shrugged it off. “The coffee’s just good today, I guess.” A couple of them smiled, a couple of them groaned. That was about right.
By the time you made it back to your building, whatever the issue was had been cleared up and the crowd of hard hats was gone. You felt a twinge of disappointment, knowing Joel probably had other things to do across campus, but shook your head. He’d come find you later. He’d promised.
You finally made it to your office and started to unpack your bag at your desk, glancing around to see if anything was amiss, but no. Everything was in place aside from the stack of papers you returned to the desk from your bag, a bit crumpled after all the manhandling they had endured. You sat to get started on grading — you had a while before your office hours and afternoon class — when there was a knock at your door.
Your eyes snapped up to the edge of the door where it was slightly open. “Come in!” You called, and your breath caught as a familiar hand came into view, wrapping around the edge of the door to push it open. You stood up almost before you even realized you were moving.
Joel came into view, and for a moment the two of you just stared at each other — you, standing at your desk, one hand still on your mouse, the other gripping the edge in front of you. Joel, standing just inside of your door, hand holding the frame so tight his knuckles turned white. He looked more handsome than ever.
“Darlin’, I—”
“Joel! You—”
You started to talk at the same time, and then both of you laughed. Your smiles broke the tension and you moved forward around your desk. He closed the door and met you in between the visitor chairs, hands coming up to lightly hold your own. “Hey there, gorgeous.” He greeted you with the half smile that always made you feel lighter. “Fancy meeting you here.” You laughed, and squeezed his hands in yours to pull him even closer as you leaned back to prop yourself against your desk.
You bit your lip as you took him in. “Long time no see.”
He leaned in and hummed in response. He placed his lips so close to your ear you could feel his breath, and murmured, “I don’t want to let another moment pass with any misunderstandings, darlin’, so let’s get a couple things straight.” He ghosted his lips against your hairline in a soft kiss. “The only person I want to date is you. I’m sorry you doubted that, even for a second.”
You shook your head. “No, Joel, it’s not your fault. I saw something and let my mind run away with me, I didn’t even talk to you about it. I, um, well—” He kissed you again, just in front of your ear, and you sighed and tilted your head to give him better access. It bolstered you when he took the invitation as it was intended and kissed you again, softly, on the cheek. “I had a… bad experience. With an ex. I reacted based on that, not because of anything you did. I don’t want you thinking this was your fault at all, I—”
“Shh,” he hushed you softly and met your eyes. “I understand. You don’t have to tell me about it right now, it’s ok.” He leaned in to press a gentle kiss to your forehead and the tenderness in the gesture made your breath catch. You squeezed his hands even tighter, suddenly feeling like you might cry with relief. “I was so worried you’d changed your mind. I was determined to fix it, whatever it was I’d done. But I didn’t want to push, ’n I wanted to wait until I saw you in person, ‘stead of trying to hash it out in text messages.”
You shook your head, and smiled at your past self and how much you’d let yourself spiral over the weekend. “Ellie and Beth both told me I was being silly, spiraling for no reason without talking to you. But it really was a reaction from my past, Joel. I mean…” you trailed off, and he caught your eye, encouraging you to continue. “The only reason I was so upset is because of how much I like you.” You bit your lip, and it drew his eyes like a magnet.
“Darlin’, I was stewin’ all weekend, worried you might not let me take you out anymore. You got no idea how much I like you.” You smiled and buried your face in the collar of his flannel shirt. Joel took the opportunity to release your hands and slide his own across your back, pulling you close. You felt their path across your body like a brand. “Pretty glad you kissed me this morning, too. Been wanting to hold you like this.”
“Oh?”
He hummed, and slid one hand up to cup the back of your neck, where you marveled at its size. The other found a new home on your lower back. “Been trying to take it slow, gorgeous.” You smiled into his neck and wrapped your own arms around his waist before lifting your chin and pressing a soft kiss there, just inside his collar.
Joel groaned and let his forehead fall to your shoulder. “We’re still on for Friday, right?” He mumbled into your neck, pressing his own gentle kisses up higher and higher until you could feel his breath on your ear again.
“Yes, Joel,” you breathed, sinking into the feeling of being in his arms and feeling his lips on your skin. “You gonna kiss me again?” You teased him, pressing a kiss just below his jawline. He smirked against your neck.
“I am kissin’ you, darlin’,” he punctuated his statement with a soft kiss just behind your ear. You pulled back.
“You know what I mean, Joel Miller.” You realized at some point in the last few minutes you’d perched up on the very edge of your desk and he’d pressed forward into the open space between your knees. You weren’t quite pressed together, but you were close.
“You want me to kiss you, honey?” The new endearment slipped right down your spine and settled there at the base like a warm ember. You pulled him closer and brought your lips a hair’s breadth away from his.
“Thought I made that pretty clear on the sidewalk earlier.” He laughed, and you felt it against your own lips like a caress.
“That you did. You know how much ribbing I got for that later?”
It was your turn to laugh, picturing the other guys giving him a hard time. “Oh? What’d they say?”
He shook his head and hummed. “I’ve been encouraged to get a room, but also congratulated on punching so far above my weight class.” You scoffed while he smiled at you.
“Do I need to remind you of your nickname? Hot Construction Guy?” You raised your eyebrows at him.
“Baby, whatever I am, I don’t hold a candle to you.”
Before you could protest — Joel was the most attractive man you’d ever seen, after all, and it wasn’t even close — he leaned forward and kissed you again.
It was even better this time.
You were more present — less frazzled, less confused, less stressed — and you sank smoothly into his kiss. He pressed his lips against yours with intent, with gentle passion that immediately sank its hooks in you and latched on tight. His lips were soft and pliant against yours and the sensation awakened something in you that felt heady and deep.
You wanted more.
Joel stepped closer, bringing himself flush against you. You sighed into his mouth. He teased you with his tongue against your lower lip before deepening the kiss, tongue sliding against your own.
You took your own opportune moment to place both of your hands in his back pockets and squeeze. Joel moaned, softly, and it was the best sound you’d ever heard.
You could feel your own interest and arousal growing. But then he softened the kiss, pressing his lips against your own once, twice, three more times, before putting a little bit of space between your mouths.
“Better stop before we get too carried away, honey.” You whined softly in response without realizing you were going to do it, and you felt your cheeks heat. He kissed you softly on the left one. “M’not opposed to office sex in theory, darlin’, but I want our first time to be in a bed. And I definitely want to take you out first.” You sighed and nodded, agreeing. Even as the mental image of office sex threatened to send you spiraling into a daydream, no matter what you’d said to Beth before. Joel wouldn’t have a hard time convincing you, you could tell.
“Me too, Joel.” You kissed the edge of his jaw again and felt him smile. For a moment the two of you just sank into a tighter embrace. His hug was already something you didn’t want to do without — it was warm and soft and comforting. He was so broad, and his hands were huge. It was the best feeling, being held by Joel.
“I don’t want to wait until Friday to see you again.” You squeezed him around the waist as you said it, and he pressed his lips to the spot where your neck met your shoulder.
“Couldn’t stay away if I tried, darlin’. Only barely made myself go back to my office, instead of waiting for you here during your class.” You laughed into his shirt.
He smiled against your neck again. “Let’s have lunch today. And tomorrow. Everyday this week, even, except Wednesday when I got a damn meeting.” He grumbled that last part. You shook your head a little.
“And I have one on Thursday. But I want to see you anyway. Wish our date was today.”
Joel leaned back to catch your eye. “If it wasn’t a school night, it would be.”
“Oh!” You couldn’t believe you didn’t ask before. “Is Sarah… I mean, I guess she probably noticed we weren’t… I hope she isn’t mad. At me. For leaving you hanging all weekend.”
Joel shook his head. “Mostly no. She’s just protective of me, no reason to be worried. She noticed I was a bit down, tried to reassure me that I hadn’t done anything, just had to talk to you. But I think she didn’t really know what to think, since I didn’t either.” You closed your eyes, worried now, too. “I’ll tell her what happened tonight.”
“Tell her I said it wasn’t about you, Joel, because it wasn’t. I know enough to know you’re a good man. I even said so to Ellie and Beth on Saturday.”
He smiled at you, soft. “And I know enough about you to know you’re too kind to not explain it.” He brought one hand up to cup your face. “I’m just glad we worked it out so fast and I got to kiss you today. Got no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that.”
“Oh?” You pulled your arms in so you could run your hands up his chest and then tangle them in his hair. “How long is that?”
Joel ducked his head, looking sheepish. “Well, just in terms of thinking you were beautiful, from that first day I saw you on the bench in the Secret Garden. But the real answer is that day when you spilled coffee on yourself. I wanted so badly for you to like me, and there you were, gorgeous and magnificent and angry.”
You groaned and dropped your face onto his chest again. “M’sorry I was such a hateful asshole.” Your voice was muffled in his shirt. You felt Joel rest his cheek against the top of your head.
“It’s ok, honey. You don’t need to keep apologizin’ for it. I really was poppin’ up at the worst moments, over and over again. Was startin’ to worry about it, myself. Thought maybe I was cursed.” You nodded and laughed against his shirt. “Was worried I’d never get the chance to see if this would have gone anywhere. Even if you are gorgeous when you’re mad.”
You shook your head, and tilted it back to meet his eyes. “Even when I was pissed in the moment I was smart enough to see what a catch you are.”
He snorted and shook his head. “A catch, huh?”
“I’ll say it until you believe it, Joel Miller. You are the hottest man I have ever seen.” He started to scoff, but stopped himself, looking shy. “I mean it. Have you seen your shoulders? Your eyes? And your hands? And you’re kind, and funny. And smart. And a good dad.”
Joel hid his face in your shoulder again before you could really take in his blush. He pressed his lips lightly up the side of your neck. You sighed. “I thought we were stopping.”
“We are,” he murmured in response. He reached up with his right hand to cup your jaw. “Just one more kiss, baby. Gotta kiss you, after you said all those nice things.”
You sank into him again, already wondering how you were going to make it to Friday.

Scripted
(Katniss Everdeen x Fem Reader) ❀
Summary: Lets be honest, Katniss isn’t the best actress, especially with a script and a green screen, so you help her through it.
Warnings/Notes: Slight language
Word Count: 1059
“You’ve just been in battle!”
Oh, Plutarch was pissed. Rightfully–Katniss was on her third slip up of the lines and it clearly wasn’t going to get better–but it also made your eyes narrow.
His outburst rang over the speakers, filling the air with an even heavier uncomfortableness than had been tensing everyone's nerves for the last ten minutes. A few moments later, he uttered an apology and wanted to run again when you spoke up.
“Give us a minute, will you?” You lifted a hand as you stepped onto the small stage, unable to watch this circus any longer. Katniss stared at you wide-eyed, face flushed beneath the makeup with embarrassment. “Come on.” You took her hand.
Katniss quietly followed you to a small storage room. It was dark and gloomy, just like she was. She sank down to the dust covered floor, arms tightly wrapping around her legs and her forehead resting on her knees.
“I can’t do this.” Her voice was soft and defeated, but much more real than it had been when she’d been reciting those cheesy lines that made you want to tear your ears off. If you were a citizen from another district and saw that on TV, you’d probably have to turn away out of second hand embarrassment.
Not that you could tell her that, though. That obviously wasn’t her fault, but it wouldn’t make anything better.
You bent down in front of her, just listening to her.
“I can’t be their Mockingjay. I can’t film these… these stupid propos. I can’t read these lines and pretend I just murdered people and focus on the glory.” Katniss kept rambling, her voice growing quieter and quieter as her face sunk further into her knees. “I shouldn't have agreed to this. And now we’ll never win the war, and the other Victors will never…”
“Kat,” you interrupted her by resting your hand on her knee, using your other to ruffle the shorter pieces of her hair that weren’t tethered to her braid. “You’re thinking way too hard about this.”
“I’m not thinking or trying hard enough.”
“No.” You sat down in front of her now, sliding your fingers to touch her forehead and gently pry her face from her knees.
The second your eyes met, she shied away and returned to hiding her face.
“Katniss. You’re not going to get anywhere by shit-talking yourself.”
Her only response was a pathetic whimper.
You sat beside her now, leaning into the uncomfortable storage shelves full of unlabeled bins. You reached an arm around her now shaking shoulders and pulled her against you. She was as stiff as a board but didn’t pull away. “Tell me what’s going on.”
“I just… I just can’t do it.” Katniss tried her best to stop the quivering of her voice but the attempt was futile. “I don’t know why. Everytime I get up there… I know the lines, but they just seem so fake and I can’t say it the right way.”
You nodded. “Is it too scripted?”
“I can’t read scripts.. I can’t act.”
Katniss finally gave into your gentle touch and she revealed her tear stained, makeup smudged face, then promptly buried it into your shirt.
You held her tightly. Your fingers tugged at the hair tie at the end of her braid and pulled it off, giving her some relief from Effie’s scalp-tugging hairdo. Katniss’s soft noise of relief, followed by the quietest sob filled the quiet room.
“Alright… You can’t read scripts, that’s okay. Maybe you can come up with your own dialogue and control it, like how you did in the games.” You suggested quietly.
Katniss shook her head. “It wouldn’t work.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know.” She was getting angry, but not at you–at the world, at her useless acting abilities, at the thought she wouldn’t be able to save those she cared about, at the fact–
“Maybe you need to be in a real situation.” You suggested. “On the field, out in the world… witnessing something that makes you want to speak. You shouldn’t have to think about what you want to say, the words should just be there. That’s when they’re the most powerful.”
Katniss looked back up at you with teary yet wide eyes.
“You mean… send me to one of the districts? To the front lines?”
“No, not exactly. Somewhere safer, but still real.”
The idea seemed to settle her a little as she pulled her bitten fingernails from her mouth, spitting out a little peeled nail polish. “That… that does sound like it would help.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah… But President Coin would never allow that, nor would Plutarch or–”
“Who cares. If they want their Mockingjay, then they have to agree to her conditions.” You smiled down at her, wiping the few tears from her red face, then also brushing a few streaks of mascara away too. “We can tell them together. They won’t be able to tell you no.”
Katniss weakly smiled too. “Okay…”
“And we’ll get some of that makeup off; you look thirty five.” You added, hoping to draw a soft chuckle out of her now pasty lips. Katniss couldn’t help but let out a soft snort of agreement and nodded.
Convincing everyone took a little bit of time but soon everyone (whether they were reluctant or not) was on board with the idea and the crew flew out to District 12.
The conditions weren’t exactly what was planned, and neither was the bombing of the hospital, but it was now or never.
The burning building reflected brightly in Katniss’s watery eyes and she turned to face the cameras. Her mouth was open but nothing was coming out and she looked to you for help.
“You can do this, Katniss.” You urged her from beside Cressida. “Just… tell them what happened, tell them what they need to hear, and everything will flow from there.”
Katniss’s gaze locked with yours as your words sunk into her mind. Then she slowly nodded and turned back to the cameras, a determined, almost confident look in her eyes.
This was the Mockingjay, and deep down beneath that now cold and raging fury, this was your Mockingjay, your Katniss.
And the second she was done, you were going to give her the tightest hug and shower her with words of pride and love.

Omega laughed as you tried to do a fishtail braid, “Sorry,  hun, I’m doing my best here, but it’s coming out a little …” you scrunch your face as you look at your handiwork, “Let’s just say if this was a real fish’s tail, this fish would be dead. Do you mind if I start over?”
“No. Go ahead.” She answered with patience and love, just happy to spend time with you.
“Alright.”
So you set to remake the fishtail, yet, no matter how hard you tried, the tails didn’t look even or how Omega wanted them, and she couldn’t stop laughing, “Omega,” you laughed unable to hold back, “I’m trying to fix your hair, so hold still.”
It was about another hour when you had finally managed to get the tails to look like tails and to make them even enough they wouldn’t embarrass her, make her look odd or like a crazy person. She ran around telling her brothers about her fishtails and showing them off.
You chuckled to yourself, slowly following her footsteps. However, you stopped midstep, your eyes focusing on Hunter sitting in his patio chair looking out over the water. There was a near blank expression on his face, yet his eyes held all his emotions. It broke your heart seeing him so … lost? Guilt-ridden? Maybe it was just overwhelming grief.
After all, it hadn’t been long since Omega and Crosshair came back. Frankly, you were happy to have them back, especially after losing Tech. Everyone on Pabu felt his loss, and getting to know Crosshair had been challenging at first, yet Hunter somehow took on the responsibility of making sure Crosshair got along with everyone.
As each day progressed, the emotions in Hunter’s eyes were slowly becoming more and more overwhelming. It wasn’t hard to see he was still learning how to move on without Tech. How to live his life without his brother.
You’ve suffered more than your fair share of losses, and you knew how difficult it was to just start living again. To start putting yourself back together without having that support you relied on so heavily. If anything, Hunter needed a friend first and foremost right now.
Not wanting to disrupt his peace too much, you did what you could as you quietly walked over and sat beside him.
Hunter didn’t flinch or react as you took your seat, he knew you were there, but he’d rather focus on the horizon, at the moment.
It was almost half an hour later, when you finally spoke up, “You okay? Caught you staring off into space again.”
His face turned to look at you, doing his best to give you a smile, even if it was half hearted.
“I’m fine.”
It had been his go-to response lately. Everything was either ‘I’m fine,’ ‘I’m okay,’ or ‘I’m just tired.’ Honestly, you had to keep reminding yourself not to get upset with him, he and his family had been through a lot. More than most families and it didn’t help if all you were going to do was nag him.
So you did what needed to be done. Find a way to get him talking. Whether you two would still remain friends after this conversation, was yet to be seen. But he needed this, whether he admitted it or not.
“It’s not your fault you know,” you rested your clasped hands on the table as you looked at him.
“What’s not?”
“Losing Tech, Omega getting captured or even Crosshair choosing to stay with Empire for as long as he did before leaving them.”
He let out a vexed noise, “It is.”
“It’s not.” You told him emphatically.
“You weren’t there.”
His eyes narrowed as you talked about the unspoken topic that was never to be mentioned between the two of you. He knew you cared, it was evident by how you took care of them. Ever since they moved into the house beside yours, you were quick to offer any assistance. Helping Omega, cooking dinner, even giving a listening ear to whoever needed it and keeping what you had learned to yourself.
However, he didn’t want you to be tainted with his failures. He wanted you to remain separate.
“You’re right.” You nodded, as your eyes focused on the sunset, “I wasn’t there, but you know who was?” I turned to look at him and smiled, “Wrecker, Omega, Echo and Tech. I’ve spoken with Wrecker, Omega and Echo, and each one of them said Tech made a choice. It was a difficult situation and it was either he delayed the inevitable and you all got captured or killed, or … he’d make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure his family survived.”
You reached over and took Hunter’s hand in yours, “Considering who Tech … was, do you think he would’ve been happy knowing you would’ve been captured because of him?”
He shook his head, as he let out a choked laugh, “No. No, he would’ve made us go over the scenario a thousand times to make sure we never let that happen again, and then he would’ve come up with a plan to enforce that.”
“And would he have blamed you for going to the outpost you went just to find information on Crosshair?”
“No. He … he was the first one to suggest it.”
You nodded, tightening your hold on his hand, “Then would it be right to say it was your fault? I mean Tech made the ultimate sacrifice for his family, that’s commendible and honourable. Don’t cheapen his sacrifice with your guilt.”
Hunter let out a long sigh as his free hand ran down his face, “If only it were that easy.”
“I know, it’s easy for someone like me … an outsider … to look in and tell you what you need to do; but as the person who lived it,” you smiled as you looked at him, “… you can just tell me to shut up and just hold your hand.”
A small smile of understanding appeared on your face as you offered it to Hunter.
“I’d never tell you to shut up.”
“Maybe I haven’t irritated you enough, yet.” You looked into his eyes letting him know you were there, as you squeezed his hand, “Hunter, nothing that happened was your fault. Omega getting captured was as Echo put it ‘an overwhelming amount of force.’ Crosshair choosing to join the Empire was no more your fault, than him choosing to leave the Empire.” You reached over brushing his hair back and tucking it behind his ear, as you cupped his cheek. “You can’t take on people’s choices or circumstances beyond your control, simply because you’re a Sergeant, or were a Sergeant. Life gives you no karking choice but to play the cards you’re dealt, and I for one, am glad you guys found your way into my life.”
He leaned into your hand holding it against his cheek, “Your friendship means more to me than you know.”
You smiled as you looked into his eyes, “I know. Your friendship means a lot too. Just … promise me, you’ll talk to me when you’re letting your emotions overwhelm you. If not me, at least someone. Please?”
“Alright, mesh’la. I promise.”
Hunter’s smile grew as he kept looking at you, even as you pulled your hand away. He’d been holding off on telling you how he felt for so long. However, he couldn’t hold back anymore, he was going to tell you.
“You know, one of these days, you’re going to have to tell me what mesh-a-la means.”
“I will,” he leaned forward, keeping your hand in his, “I promise.”

This galaxy raised warriors, heroes, and peace-keepers. Those who fought in the name of their planet, for the safety of the future, and the love they carry for their family. Those who were victims of war survived… or trained to survive, fight, and endure.
This galaxy isn’t raised for writers, painters, and performers. Those who coped in whomever’s name, for the sanity of themselves, and possibly for the love they carried for their crafts. Of course, artists don’t only do it for themselves. They create in order to escape; and luckily enough, they don’t press themselves into the cruel hands of the galaxy. Because it isn’t built for them.
For you, the galaxy seemed to test the waters. Warriors and Artists? Maybe those two weren’t so different, after all. Oh, how history would have written it; when the stars collide, an artist with no place in this galaxy meets a warrior who can’t find a home. Those three long years, what an adventure it has been.
Din Djarin is a victim of war. Like yourself. There truly is a place for people like you. But whilst Din grew up with the Way, you grew up tracing the sky, seeing shapes in every landscape, and memorising the curve of someone’s face. Often asking yourself questions like; Where does the shadow fall? In which direction does the light come from? If you were simplified, which shapes best describe you?
Din Djarin is a Mandalorian. Not like yourself. A Mandalorian. A warrior. He trained and connived his way till he stood in this solid home. He grew up hidden, so he stayed that way for a while in his life; often a mystery to the Guild.
“Din Djarin, do not move.” You warned, tilting your head as the heat of Nevarro’s sun hit your face. The chair, in which you sat, rocked back slightly at your movements. With arms outstretched, thumb against the pencil, you held it feebly upwards, trying to calculate the proportions of the Mandalorian’s body.
If you could see his face out in the open right now, you would’ve caught on with the fact that your husband — your riduur — was smirking. And decided to tilt his head in the opposite direction for the fun of it. You clicked your tongue in annoyance but a smile adorned your face. “I’ve been in this position for fifteen minutes, ner runi.” Din sighed softly, tapping his ungloved fingers against his forearm.
“Fifteen minutes more.” You looked at him over the rim of your notebook, sketching away. A light fire went on above your head, face lighting up as the same smile adorned your features. “I’ll entertain you, what’s our son doing?” You asked, raising your notebook down to tilt your head at him again.
Din chuckled at your demeanour or was it your question? You couldn’t tell, though he answered anyway. “Eating frogs.”
“Again?” You turned to look at the side to see your son doing so; eating frogs. Entirely, it was your fault for looking away. At the time your eyes left your riduur, Din got up, breaking your focus. “Din!” You laughed as you looked back at him.
Your Mandalorian called your name with the same energy. His next words were spoken in a gentle manner, enough to capture your attention. “I’m tired,” He merely said, extending his hand to you. “Let’s be tired together.”
You let a relieved breath. Has it always been there? You weren’t sure, though, at this moment, you let it go. You released it when settling your supplies down the chair in which you sat. You released it when you found yourself melting into Din’s hands.
With the armour off, the world is all but noisy. The only sound prominent are frogs croaking and the gentle breeze of Nevarro’s ambience. He pulled you into his chest and laid his back against the frame of the metal door.
Music. You could hear music, with your cheeks pressed against the warmth of his chest, and with his arms wrapped around you (and yours around Din’s waist). The world stopped, for a few moments it stopped, and you breathed. Inhale and exhale. The exhaustion left your body through that breath, and you could feel that Din breathed too. Ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum. You could hear his gentle heart, if you listen close enough, you could practically hear his soul. What would it sound like?
Move. Your body screamed to move, but a part of you wanted to stay like this forever. Though, the feeling caved into you, forcing your head to look at your husband’s visor. Your chin rested on his chest as you asked warily. “Can I kiss you?”
Modulate. The Mandolorian’s helmet modulated his voice, if he answered in a chuckle, the other might receive it the wrong way. He didn’t want to move. The embrace held a significant peace, one that physically pained him when he moved a muscle. But Din didn’t speak with his brain at the moment, so he removed his helmet, and the beskar fell onto the floor beside them.
They were in the middle of nowhere, what would you say? — All is well. — That sentence proved its point when Din held your cheeks beneath his hands, and his lips were on yours. He could feel you kiss back, he could feel your cheeks against his, he could feel the lazy smile that tugged your lips. Truly, Din wanted to open his eyes, to get a better look of you without his visor, yet somehow, he couldn’t.
Din is tired. So tired. His shoulder gave in and melted between your arms; he didn’t know how it got there; your elbows above his shoulder, as your fingers explored his hair. But Din didn’t care, he just melted into your kiss, laughing, nearly crying over the unexpected bliss and peacefulness the day had to offer.
His desires of staying like this with you continued to grow within each second—
“Patu!” And then, the moment was sweetly broken.
Your lips disconnected with a sound, pulling away the moment the sound was in ear-shot. Din’s eyes landed first on the green baby, doe eyed, ears high, and head tilted innocently.
You saw him slurp a frog. “Grogu,” A waning smile reached your son’s lips when his name was mentioned, without warning, he jumped into your arms. Thankfully, you caught him. “That’s not nice of you. What if the frogs had parents?” You teased.
Din chuckled beside you, kissing your temple lightly, before opening the door. “Let’s head inside.” He said while bending to get his fallen helmet. The gesture, so simple, caught you off guard. A soft, green hand held the base of your cheek and Grogu joyfully yelled with ‘‘Iek!’
Stepping inside, you looked around, almost nostalgically. This is your home. Reminded by Grogu and Din’s presence, a smile painted your lips. They are your home. “I’ll kiss you once more when he’s asleep.” He muttered before taking Grogu from your grip.
Maybe there is a place for artists in this galaxy.

Bonus: Iron Man 1; 1/?
So, I decided to re-watch Iron Man tonight, and I started thinking about how Pocket would fit into existing MCU narratives. So, here's a little bonus, taking place during the first Iron Man movie. This might turn into something, it might not. For now, just a little fun thing I did, mostly so I could write more Pocket/Tony (even though she hasn't been given the nickname 'Pocket' yet). Enjoy!
“Only you would fuck a girl who called you a war profiteer,” you told Tony over the video call from your office in New York. “She still upstairs?”
“Miss Potts should be taking care of her right now,” Tony said as he fiddled with the engine of his 1932 Ford Flathead Roadster in his Malibu garage.
“How’s that working out, anyway?” you asked, your interest piqued. “She’s lasted loads longer than any of your other personal assistants.”
“She’s good,” Tony said, taking a piece of the car’s engine out and putting it aside. “Very efficient.”
“I like her,” you told him. “I think she’s been good for you.”
“Yeah, well, I wouldn’t need her if you just moved out here permanently,” he told you.
“And just leave the New York office to Obadiah Stane? I don’t think so,” you said.
“I don’t know why you hate him so much, Kiddo,” Tony said, turning his focus away from the car and fully onto you.
“He’s the one who hates me,” you clarified. “I’m just matching his energy.”
“I think you’re reading too much into it. He’s a little wary of you, that’s all.”
“He hates that you nominated me for Chief Technical Officer,” you said. “He officially opposed the nomination in front of the board.”
Tony frowned. “When the fuck did that happen? Why wasn’t I informed of it?”
You rolled your eyes. “Maybe if you spent a little less time shooting craps and fucking Vanity Fair reporters, and actually attended a board meeting every once in a while,” you said.
“I’ll talk to him,” Tony assured you.
“No, don’t,” you protested. “It’s bad enough he thinks I’m just another one of your fangirls. The last thing I need is for you to make a demand on him for my sake.”
“Well, what do you want me to do?” he asked you. “This job is yours– it should be yours. You’ve earned it.”
You sighed. “And I appreciate you saying that. Thing is, I’m not going to prove that by having you tell people. Only way it’s going to happen is if they see what I’m capable of, and if I leave New York for Malibu, they never will.”
“Did I ever tell you you’re very annoying when you make a valid point that goes against what I want?” Tony asked you.
“Frequently. All the time. Why do you think I enjoy doing it so much?”
“You know, I think I liked you better when you were just a stripper,” he said.
You stuck your tongue out at him through the video feed. “Yeah, well, whose fault is it that I’m not anymore?”
“You could always join my flight crew, if you ever wanted back on the pole,” he teased.
“Please,” you scoffed at the suggestion. “You call them dancers? They should be ashamed of themselves.”
“Hey now, what they lack in rhythm, they make up for in other… areas,” Tony smirked.
“Do you ever get tired of being a giant slut?” you asked affectionately.
“Not yet, but if I do, you’ll be the first to know.”
“Maybe second,” you told him.
“Whaddaya mean?”
“I don’t know– maybe you should tell Miss Potts first,” you grinned. You looked behind him to see the woman in question coming down the stairs through the glass door behind him. “Speaking of which, it’s her birthday today, so be nice.”
Tony’s eyes widened. “How the hell do you know that?” he asked you.
“I pay fucking attention, dumbass,” you said.
Pepper Potts entered the basement, talking on the phone. “You are supposed to be halfway around the world right now,” she said to Tony as she tapped something on her tablet.
“Hey, Pepper,” you called.
“(Y/N), hi,” the other woman said. “How’s the nomination going?”
You shrugged. “Oh, you know, just roadblocks from the patriarchy. No big deal.”
Pepper nodded understandingly at that.
“How’d she take it?” Tony asked Pepper, interrupting your conversation.
“Like a champ,” Pepper offered.
“Which translates to ‘like an obnoxious bitch,” you chuckled. Pepper winked at you over Tony’s shoulder. “You owe her a raise, Boss,” you told Tony.
“You give a raise,” Tony said. He directed his next words to Pepper: “Why are you trying to hustle me out of here?”
“Your flight was scheduled to leave an hour and a half ago,” she told him.
“That’s funny,” Tony said as he continued to play with the engine of the Roadster. “I thought with it being my plane and all, that it would just wait for me to get there.”
“This is the flight to Afghanistan?” you asked, and Pepper nodded at you.
“I mean,” Tony spoke over you, “doesn’t it defeat the whole purpose of having your own plane if it departs before you arrive?”
“Ignore him, Pepper,” you said, turning to face your computer monitor. “Tony, if you don’t get your ass to the airport right now, I’m going to hack into JARVIS’s system right now and swap all your playlists from metal to nineties bubblegum pop.”
“You wouldn’t.” Tony said, standing up and wiping his hands on a towel.
“Don’t test me, Boss,” you threatened. “This is a huge-ass contract.”
Inside Tony’s garage, the opening notes of Hanson’s MMMBop began to play.
“Fine, enough! You win, you tiny monster!’ Tony grunted, throwing his towel down.
You immediately cut the music. “Get on that plane,” you warned him. “I’ll know if you don’t.” You gave him a Look. “And Pepper, tell him to stop pulling your pigtails, okay?”
Pepper blushed, but she just nodded.
“Give Rhodey a hug for me,” you told Tony, “and let me know when you land, you absolute dipshit.” You disconnected the call.
“You know,” said Tony, turning back to Pepper, “sometimes I regret ever meeting that kid.”
Pepper smiled. “No, you don’t.”
Tony grinned at her. “No, no I don’t. Not even for a second. Now, about that Jackson Pollock painting…”

Summary: you and Joe meet at OSU and start to get to know each other
Pairing: Joe burrow x reader
———————
September 10 2017
Y/n POV
It was a cool September day at OSU. The sun was shining but a crisp in the air flowed. I was heading out the door to go to my English class. I was wearing jeans, a white long sleeve Flowy top, and boots. My backpack was as heavy as a boulder and was making my back ache. Once I got to my English class I sat down on one of the auditorium seats and pulled out the moving table from my arm chair to put my notebook and pen on. After a few minutes more people started to come I wasn’t really paying attention to any one of them until someone caught my eye. It was one of the quarterbacks from the football team. He recently joined the class. I’ve seen him walk around before and I’ve seen him play. He is really good at football but I don’t understand why he is a backup. He should be QB1 from the way I seen him play. He sat down in the row below me. He fisted bumped someone who was probably one of his friends and pulled out his stuff from his bag. He was so cute. But I have to focus. The class was long but all I could think about was him. He was right there the whole time just being perfect. As the bell rang it startled me but I got up and put my book in my hands and swung my backpack on my shoulder. As I was getting out of the row to head out someone bumped into me. It was him! My books fell out of my hand and he went to pick it up.
“Oh my god! I am so sorry”-joe
“Are you ok?”- joe said as he handed me my books back
I smiled
“Yeah! I’m ok. Sorry that was my fault I wasn’t looking.”-you
“Haha! Don’t worry about it I wasn’t looking either.”-joe
“I’m Joe by the way, Joe burrow!”-joe
He puts his hands on the straps of his backpack clearly not knowing if he should shake my hand
“I’m y/n!”- you
“Well y/n it was nice meeting you,and so sorry for bumping into you.”-joe
“Don’t worry about it! And it was nice meeting you to Joe burrow.” -You say with a smile
Joe smiles big trying not to blush but I could definitely see it.
We both walked out and onto the main campus. He wasn’t a little bit behind me but I could feel eyes on me as I walked and knew it was him which gave me butterflies.
“Wait y/n,wait up!”-joe
I turned around to see his beautiful blue eyes and wide smile.
“Do you by any chance have the notes from last class? I missed them because I was at an away game.”-joe
I smiled
“Yeah! I was actually about to go to the library to finish them though. You can join if you want!” - you
Um! What was I thinking! Inviting the QB to take notes with me!
“Yeah actually! I would like that!”-joe
“Great! This way!”-you
Joe started walking with me and my heart was pounding. After a few minutes Joe spoke up.
“So, tell me about yourself!”-joe
“Haha! Well since you want to know so badly. I am from Northgate,Ohio which is right out of Cincinnati. I have an older sister and a twin brother! And I love dogs and the beach!”-you
“Oh!I’m from Ohio too! I have two older brothers!”-joe
“Really! Where in Ohio?”-you
“Athens!”- joe
“Oh I’ve been of Athens! My friends and I used to go there sometimes during the summer because there is this old house on the lake and where we used to hang out!”- you
“Yeah! The famous lake house! I go there all the time!”-joe
“Haha that’s so funny! People in Athens are so sweet that’s one of the reasons I’ve always loved going.”-you
“Yeah,they are really nice!”-joe
Joe and I got to work on our notes but we couldn’t stop talking and laughing.
“So you really only seen Star Wars once?”-joe
“Yes!”-you
“Damm y/n I really got to go take you to go see it. You have to watch it!”-joe
I looked at him in shock. Did Joe just ask me out?
“Let me take you out Saturday night! We can go to the theater right around the corner.”- joe
“Are you asking me out on a date, burrow?”-you
“Maybe…”-joe
“Well then it’s a date!”-you
“It’s a date! Here give me your phone number.”-joe
I handed him my phone. My heart is racing. I can’t believe I’m going on a date with Joe!
“Here! I will text you.”-joe says handing back your phone.
“Ok! See ya! Got to get to physics which sucks!”-you
Joe looks back at you in shock.
“You hate physics? I love it!”-joe
“What!! I can’t stand it! I don’t understand what Professor Burn talks about. Well I just don’t understand it in general.”-you
“How about I help you! You can help me in English and I will return the favor by helping you with physics!”-joe
“Ok! I got to go but text me!”-you
“Ok! Bye y/n!”-joe
“Bye Joe!”-you
I walked away with a smile on my face.
————————-
Joes POV
I got into English class and there she was y/n. She was beautiful. Brunette hair, blue eyes, and an amazing smile. She’s very sweet and calm. She has a funny laugh that makes me get butterflies. She sits right behind me. I always find myself looking at her for to long whenever she gets called on.
As I was walking out I wasn’t looking where I was going and bumped into her.
“Oh my god! I am so sorry!”-joe
I bent down to get her notebook and English book. As I gave it to her she smiled which made me get all giddy inside. I introduced myself and she did the same. We both walked out and I didn’t want to stop talking to her so I decided to say I didn’t do my notes and if she could let me borrow her notes. I actually did do them. All of it. I ran up to her and I asked. I then found myself sitting in the library with y/n taking notes. I found myself staring at her beauty. She was perfect. I knew I needed to ask her out. She got me. And not a lot of people really click with me like she did. She was different. A good different. So I asked if she wanted to watch Star Wars with me at the theatre even though i watched it millions of times. And she said yes! I gave her my phone number and turns out she needed help with physics which is my specialty. My plan is to take her out Saturday then maybe if she feels comfortable to come back to my place to study. Not to do anything else. I’m not that kind of person to rush into things like that and I know people are different when it comes to those kinda getting together things and I respect it. I was kinda sad when she left to go to class. I just wanted to keep talking to her forever. But now I have to plan the perfect night for Saturday.

Every Time You Walk By
Characters: Poe Dameron x reader
Summary: Poe has developed feelings for his best friend, but with a war to fight, will he ever get around to telling them?
Word Count: 1219 words
Prompt: Best Friends, Gentle Kiss, Shared Clothing, Holding Hands When Stressed.
A/N: This is the last of my celebration fics and it is for the lovely and wonderful @minigirl87 . Thank you to everyone who threw something at me, and I am sorry some of these took me so long!
Tumblr media
Things used to be straightforward, and that was the way Poe liked it. He had a war to win, a galaxy to save, that was just his life. It fell into a rhythm of sorts, a simple melody in the symphonic masterpiece that was the galaxy, like an oboe making the overall opus richer, adding depth. That was the way he liked it, his life was full, he didn’t need any distractions, so why did his stupid brain keep returning to you?
Poe trusted you with his life, he’d had to, and your friendship meant a lot to him, but that was all this was, friendship. If he told himself that often enough, then maybe he could fool himself into believing it. Something had changed for him, and although he couldn’t pinpoint when that had started, he knew the exact moment he had realised.
Returning from a mission, one which had got a little dicey for a while there, he had climbed out of his ship and seen you running across the hanger. Your hair was a beautiful mess, his jacket wrapped around you over your combat gear. It could have been a trick of the light, but for just a moment, he could have sworn you glowed as you smiled at him. Your hug had knocked the air from his lungs, and it took a second before his brain caught up to what was going on and he returned your embrace. That was the moment, as he rested his head against yours, eyes closed, that he mentally uttered an expletive. That was the moment he knew he was in love with his best friend, and it was utterly hopeless.
Poe had continued with life, ignoring this nagging feeling, this desire to always be by your side. He was a little clingier, not that he would admit it. BB8 seemed to spend more time around you, and that had absolutely nothing to do with Poe asking the little droid to keep an eye out for you, it definitely did not provide him with an excuse to seek you out more often either. The war was the focus. He had to keep his head in the game.
The command room was silent, except from the broken, tinny voice emitting from the comms. It was supposed to have been a simple mission, just a small squadron on recon, but the firefight that had ensued was devastating. It had been an ambush; they’d had no chance.
Mackenzie’s voice narrated the action, panic evident despite him trying his best to hide it. Poe hung his head. It should have been him. He should have insisted they waited until he’d returned from Yavin 4. Logically, he knew that he couldn’t go on every mission, but right now, standing there with his fists clenched, he felt so helpless.
“Green 4 has been hit. Collins is down.”
A single tear of frustration and loss escaped from his right eye, and he hurriedly swiped it away with the back of his hand.
“They are right on my tail. There’s eight of them. I don’t think I can shake them.”
Poe felt a warm hand take his and he looked up in surprise. His eyes met yours and he could see the pain and sadness there he knew was reflected in his own. Some of the tension left his body, and he found his fingers interlacing with yours. The two of you stood, side by side, in silence as the inevitable outcome of the ambush played out over the comms.
As the line went to static, Poe felt the usual weight of guilt hit him. What he hadn’t expected was for you to squeeze his hand, a silent gesture that seemed to say it wasn’t his fault. His thumb tentatively ran over yours in reply, his way of telling you that he knew. No words were needed, and he wondered if this was because you were best friends or if it was his deeper feelings for you. The comfort he sensed at your touch suddenly felt selfish, and he pulled his hand away. The Resistance had just lost some good people, he could not allow himself the luxury of letting the world go a little fuzzy around the edges.
He tried to avoid you, he really did, but his feet seemed to have other ideas. His entire body longed to be close to you, even if it was simply sitting in the same room for a little while. There was just something about you that made things better. Every time you walked by, it was like he’d drank a shot of pure caff, and if you smiled..! Oh, maker, if you smiled at him, he felt invincible. True, there had been times when you smiled and he’d ended up tripping over something or walking into a doorway, but even those incidents couldn’t dampen the feeling of walking on air.
Rather than admit his feelings for you, he threw himself into his work. The sooner the war was over, the sooner he could focus on other things, right? And so, Commander Dameron burned the candle at both ends, accepting any and every assignment, often taking back-to-back missions.
It was late one night as he stumbled out of his ship, exhausted and aching, when he felt you beside him. Without a word, you slipped your hand around his waist and took some of his weight.
“You’re dead on your feet, Poe. Please tell me you aren’t planning to fly again before you’ve had some real rest.” The soft chastising tone of your voice made the corners of his lips quirk up a little. He knew you cared, knew you worried, but hearing it always made his heart jump.
“I’m gonna rest, sweetheart. You don’t need to worry about me.”
“Well, someone clearly has to, because you’re not. Come on, let’s get you to bed.”
“Now that’s an offer.” He chuckled, not realising his inner monologue had escaped his lips.
“If that’s what it takes to get you to rest then I’ll come and tuck you in every night.”
Poe was too sleepy to respond, but his mind took that mental image and ran with it. A sleepy, goofy smile appeared on his face as he imagined falling asleep next to you every night.
It wasn’t too long before you got him to his quarters. Once inside, you’d made him lay down as you removed his boots. As soon as his back had hit the mattress, his body had begun to relax, allowing the exhaustion to take him. In that haze between consciousness and sleep, he felt you pull the thin blanket over him, tucking him in as promised. Poe couldn’t be certain, but he thought he felt your fingers brush his hair back from his face, and then the warmth of your breath fan over his skin. A soft warmth pressed to his forehead, had you just kissed him?
“Goodnight, Poe.”
He wanted to trace his fingers over the spot he was half certain you had gently kissed, but his body would no longer co-operate. Instead, he let out a contented sigh, his fingers twitching by his side. Maybe tomorrow he would return the sign of affection, perhaps even tell you how much you meant to him, but for now…

Weeeell look who's plummeted slightly sozzled down your chimney and crashed into your festive fireplace! Yes, tis I, Saint Niccals, delivering ye the greatest gift of all - myself! In the form of my heartwarming Christmas Day message, aka the REAL king's speech. What a lovely surprise. Before this arrived you were probably having a dreadful time with the nearest and dearest (I know I am), so let me defibrillate your day with a jolt of Murdoc magic!
BTW, no, I did NOT use an AI to write this. No chance. I'll prove 987alkhjflkajfq. I just wrote that with my face. Would an AI do that? Nope, cos AI's don't have faces, also they're very boring and predictable. Apart from Cyborg Noodle who's dangerously unhinged due to that hole in her noggin, but other bots - very beige. No, this really is me, writing by candlelight, robed in a billowy dressing gown, festive cheer all about me; turkey on fire, tree riddled with vermin (Russ found it in a graveyard), chestnuts roasting in the George Foreman.
Right then, without further ado, 2023, let's have a look at ya
Twas a year of the Tormenta (that's 'storm' in Spanish, also track 8 on my latest smash). Every kind of storm imaginable, inc loads of actual storms. A year when the Doomsday Clock moved to 90 seconds from midnight - a smidge ominous, but it's not midnight yet! So there's still hope. Not for our xmas turkey, alas, which Noodle has just put out with a fire extinguisher. But let's focus on the positives - like my incredibly successful album Cracker Island. Wow. Really suffered for that one, you know. Mostly Stuart's fault for dragging us into a cult-war, but TBF it did set up a terrific boss-battle finale for the Silent Running vid. And then Coachella! Ahh, the Gorillaz BFF's all together on one stage! (Plus one numpty who arrived late after falling asleep on the ferris wheel.)
Most important thing at the end of any year, ask yourself - what did you learn? I learned nothing. But what did YOU learn? Maybe that there's no utopia. Maybe this world is all we've got, so we'll just have to make do and polish the turd. Oo that reminds me, I need to wrap 2D's present.
MERRY CHRISTMAS ONE AND ALL.
Your rizz,
MURDOC A. NICCALS

Self Aware Project Sekai
Again
Hehe
P.s: I am just brainrotting and rambling here, so uh.. there may be grammar mistakes and etc
TW: Yandere stuff
Tumblr media
You can read part one here if you already haven't
...So first things first
(AGGH MY CLASSMATES ARE SO LOUD HELP I CANT FOCUS-)
There's no worshipping here?? (Well maybe a little-)
Why do I say a little-? Ichika :)
I mean, you've seen her when it comes to vocaloids heh. Now yanderify it
No one else really does that
Mafuyu is one of the most dangerous fellow here
She looks up to you, she sees you as someone who could save her. She knows that you won't judge her
And if you have at least a bit of similar family problem with her, well..... say hello to being isekai 'ed into pjsk :)
She isn't the only one who would do that ofcourse, but she is one of the fastest ones WHILE being smart.
But we will talk about it later ;)
Everyone's tactic to get you here, is to make pjsk your comfort place, safe space. To make you love them so much you would WANT to stay with them.
I'm sure they would share you- but jealousy would exist
I mean, you're helping them and supporting them! How could they not like you? (Why do I feel like Akito and Ena would argue over who's band is you favorite)
So, you know how they have songs right?
If you mostly play one groups song, ohoho
Other would be jealous, like rlly jealous
While the group is so happy to be your favorite! (Some may even try to make their songs more similar to the song of the other)
If it's Leo/need, most will be slightly jealous and will try to change their music to their.
If it's More More Jump, they'll change their outfits and try to be more energetic (Even Akito-)
If it is Vivid BAD Squad, OH the jealousy would eb over the top. Everyone will try to rap like Akito Everyone will try change their music AND dances. Also Ena might..argue/bicker with Akito more (Tsukasa and Shizuki won't with their siblings btw..probably.. maybe a bit)
If it's Wonderland x Showtime, everyone will try to make their performances grander! Jealous aswell but not as much as with Vivids (Akito's fault).
If it's Nightcord at 25:00 then they would turn emo then they would turn their songs a bit darker. Also might make their color pallate darker (while with wxs more colorful)
Tbh they all ate great friends and siblings that I don't think bad blood would happen between them. Maybe fight sometimes but no killing each other. Saki is the most safe one lmao
Though they could kill others (aka noc characters)
They might even do singing battles 💀
But usually guys fistfight (minus Tsukasa, he's smarter than that! I will expand on what he would do later.)
Girls fight too but they won't do much damage (care about each other).. BUT I feel like Mafuyu won't hesitate to start a war. THEN it will go downhill
I'm off for now, but soon I'll expand more
(I'm out of brain juice)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I like putting gifs, idk why. Be it random gifs or the fandom I write for ones, I just love doing it heh)

Paris, December 2013
-When I lived here I always stopped like we are now and contemplated this city that never sleeps... always thinking about how much this city has seen, how much these streets have seen.
They were at the hotel window looking at Paris and its lights. It was winter and the city, which is beautiful regardless of the season, was still alive with the typical touch of magic. He had his face in her hair, as he liked to do since day one. There was something about the smell of her hair , something sweet and spice like her. He raised his eyes a little to also focus on the city, but it was difficult, because she was only wearing his shirt and he was wearing the hotel robe. However, that woman was cultured, she had lived in so many countries and traveled so much. He didn't want to seem like the stupid guy driven only by desire, who couldn't articulate a conversation... sometimes it was cool to be shy and undecided about what to say, because this spare you to look like an idiot.
-There is a lot of blood in these streets... and also a lot of hope. The French Revolution, the war. But also the parties, the victories, the good music, the good food, the art.
-Yes, the DNA of Paris is a tangle of moments and this seems to reflect in the city, doesn't it? She said snuggling closer to his chest.
-I think that actually, Paris wouldn't be so mystical and fascinating if it hadn't experienced all these things. In the end, all of this ended up creating the city, you know...going through these things, made Paris what it is.
-Speaking of going through things... While you were in the shower our boss called me asking if I knew which hotel in Paris you were at, because he needed to talk to you. I think he was actually hoping to hear that I'm here too. I said I didn't know. Maybe you shouldn't have posted that pic.
-We were wearing masks.... He hugged her tighter. He knew it was silly to post the photo, that it was impulsive. But he was in love and he was happy because the girl loved him too. He was living the best phase of his life and he wanted to shout it to the world. But he couldn't.
-If one day someone happens to find out and pressure you about it, if they say anything, I'll say it was my fault. That you didn't want it, that I forced it to happen. She turned to him and kissed him.
-No. I don't know what awaits us. In fact, we don't know. But I know we're going to have to go through a lot. Maybe we have no idea what we will have to go through. But please, let's get through this together.
-Yes. Together. He kissed her back.
-Will we go through so much that we will become mystical and fascinating like Paris, one day?
She laughed and kissed him again. Then he looked back at the city and also felt like his heart shouting that he was happy, that he was in love, that he was scared to death, but that he knew there was no way not to experience that. And the city listened to him because a rain cloud disappeared, showing the stars in the Paris sky.
"Sometimes the stars just align."

Too Little, Too Late - P3
Whump Rating: 3/5 (first paragraphs sad, then comfort)
TW: MCD (kinda), suicide, we reach the happy ending!
When Hyrule reaches Legend, there’s only dull apathy as he looks at Four, prone on the ground. Even from here, he can see the swelling disfiguring his head. He never should have let the smith walk away.
Legend sits next to him, running his hand through the smith’s hair. He doesn’t look up when Hyrule settles next to him.
“Are you hurt?”
The vet shakes his head. “Where are the others?”
“Dead.” Maybe he shouldn’t drop the truth like that. But Hyrule is numbing to everything. Too much has happened in too short a time.
“You’re alive.”
“Yeah.”
Legend finally looks at him. “You didn’t save them.”
He squeezes his eyes shut and curls over his knees. “I know.”
“What’s the point of all this? This journey? If this was the end goal, why did the goddesses send us on this journey?” Legend’s next words are as sharp as a blade. “Why didn’t you save us?”
“I tried,” he sobs. “I tried Ledge. I promise. I just—I’m out of magic and—
“Excuses.”
“What? No, it’s the truth!” He looks up to find disgust on his predecessor's face.
“If you cared about us, you would have tried harder.”
“I did! I did, I swear, I did!”
The vet pulls a knife from his hip and slowly turns it. The blade catches the light, reflecting back red. Then he offers it to Hyrule. “If you were a true hero, you’d remove yourself from the equation.”
Hyrule stares, heart sinking. “You want me to—” to kill myself, hangs unspoken. “You’d really ask me to do that? For, for not trying hard enough?”
Legend shrugs, still holding out the knife. “Your blood carries a curse, doesn’t it? Killing yourself is the least you can do. This whole battle?” He gestures at the field and bodies of the heroes, cast aside to lie with monsters. “This is all because of you.”
Shaking his head, Hyrule scoots backward. “No. No, that’s not true. Something is wrong with you; with this situation.”
The vet snorts and finally pulls the knife back. “Figures you’d say that. I can’t have my line continue to spawn such a pathetic excuse for a hero.” He fixes Hyrule with a glare. “You are a coward, Link.”
Then he stabs the dagger into his chest.
“No! No, no, Legend!” Hyrule throws himself on his friend’s body, even as it slumps into the grass. How many times has hot blood stained his hands today?
“Please! I’m sorry! I’m sorry, okay? You’re right, it’s all my fault. I should have told you about the curse! I should have—look, there’s a lot of things I should have done, okay? Just, please, don’t go where I can’t follow.”
Legend takes a ragged breath, face paling. He stares at Hyrule, disappointment thick. “Why didn’t you save us?”
Then his eyes roll back and he lies still.
“No, no! Legend! No! Please I can’t—I can’t live without you all! Please! Come back! Legend! Anyone! Please!”
There is no answer. Hyrule is alone.
Someone is screaming. There are hands on his shoulders and voices, but all Hyrule can hear is the screaming.
“What’s going on?”
“It’s the curse!”
“Hyrule! Snap out of it!”
“Time, what do we do?”
“Just hold him still so he doesn’t hurt himself! Wars, see what healing supplies we have!”
Hyrule tries to move, only to find hands holding his limbs in place. He struggles against them, but it’s hard to concentrate past the screaming. His throat is sore.
A blurred shape enters his line of sight. “Hang in there, Hyrule! You’re okay! You were hit by a curse, just try to breathe.”
The screaming cuts off as the traveler tries to follow the instructions. Oh. That was him screaming.
“That’s it, just breathe.”
“Here, I’ve got the potion!” Glass nudges his lips and he takes an obedient swallow. It helps settle the racing of his heart and he takes another.
“There we go. See? You’re okay.”
Hyrule blinks and the Chain shimmers into focus. Warriors and Time lean over him, surrounded by the rest of the group. Looking up shows Legend supporting his head in his lap. One hand gently pets his hair.
The vet smiles at him. “Hey Rulie, you back with us?”
Hyrule meets each of their eyes—alive and worried—and bursts into tears.
“Shh, I’ve got you.” Legend curls over him, one hand cupping his cheek and wiping away tears. “Everything is going to be okay.”
“B-but I couldn’t save you and—and—”
“That’s just the curse. None of that happened.”
Hyrule continues to sob, unable to process the vivid memories still pulsing in his head. “I’m so sorry, Ledge. I never wanted to disappoint you!”
“You didn’t.” The vet plants a soft kiss on his forehead and gives him a gentle smile. “You’ll never disappoint me. I’m proud of you, Link.”
Despite the tears that still stream down his face, Hyrule tucks the words deep in his heart.
By the time Hyrule is allowed to move around, he’s hugged all the heroes at least twice. “I thought you were dead,” he sobs into their shoulders. “I couldn’t save you!”
“Nothing is getting me down!” Wind says, but all the traveler can remember is how scared the sailor was.
When Wild offers food he turns it down. The last thing he needs is to be sick. Curse or no curse, the memories flare bright in his mind. Blood, injury, agony—gruesome detail on replay.
It’s not real, he tells himself. It was just the curse. Somehow, it doesn’t help.
“Got space for a few more?”
Hyrule looks up from where he’s staring at his blanket to find Legend with his sleeping mat and blanket. He nods and the vet sets up his bed directly next to Hyrule.
“I get the other side!” Wild joins him, dropping his bedding on Hyrule’s other side.
The traveler frowns at the motion. Wild normally sleeps by Twilight, curling up into his wolf pelt. The champion shoots him a sunny smile. In hyrule’s memory, his throat gapes. No, that’s not real.
Sky is next. “No fair! I wanted to cuddle!”
“You get a head or feet.”
Sticking out his tongue at Legend, Sky sets up by his head.
The rest of the chain join him, jostling and grumbling to set up their beds in a circle around him. Hyrule finds himself completely sandwiched on all sides.
“Move over!”
“You’re shoving me!”
“Sky, your elbow is poking me.”
“Let me hold you, then.”
Legend is pushed into his side and, while he grumbles, he doesn’t move. One hand digs under the blankets to find Hyrule’s, squeezing tight.
The traveler squeezes back, running a finger over the ring bands within reach.
On his other side, Wild chuffs and burrows into his side, trapping an arm within his. Sky, with Four now clutched to his chest, reaches up and pats Hyrule’s hair. The rest of the Chain settle, most with a hand on Hyrule somewhere.
By the time their breathing is evening into sleep, he can finally let go of some of the lingering tension. With so many close bodies it’s impossible not to feel their hearts beat, their lungs breath, and life—vibrant and rich—in all of them.
Hyrule isn’t trapped in a cursed vision. He’s here, with his family, tucked at the center like something precious to be protected.
No matter what, he will give everything he has to save his brothers. And in return, they will support Hyrule if he breaks.
He’s not alone.

A/N: (This is written for the fictional depictions from the show - no disrespect to the real life veterans!) The title for this one comes from "Enchanted" by Taylor Swift, because how could I not? I hope you like this, Anon, and thanks for the request! Warnings: mentions of war
With a dramatic sigh, Elizabeth, one of your fellow nurses, drapes herself across a stack of boxes. Starry-eyed, she stares out of the tent, watching the comings and goings of the men outside. “It really is too bad that a lot of them won’t be coming back,” she says.
“Oh, hush!” Another nurse, Martha, objects. Her hands fly to the cross around her neck and she rubs it between her thumb and forefinger. “You shouldn’t say things like that.”
Still gazing towards the men outside, Elizabeth shrugs. “There’s a war on. Men die in wars. Some of them are bound to go.”
Before a full-blown argument can break out, you interject. “So it’s a good thing they have us. And all the medics and doctors. Who knows? Maybe you’ll catch a handsome man’s attention while patching him up.”
Elizabeth nods enthusiastically, finally tearing her focus away from the men and bringing it back inside the tent. “That’s what I’ve been thinking! Wouldn’t it be romantic?”
“No,” Martha says evenly as she closes up the box that she’s just finished packing. “It would be better off to have a husband that’s all in one piece. Now, are you going to stand around sighing after men who don’t even know you exist, or are you going to do your job and pack these boxes?”
You catch yourself before you can roll your eyes. Elizabeth, however, doesn’t even try to hide her annoyance. Yes, she might be overdramatic, but sometimes you really can’t blame her – Martha is something of a pessimist.
Just for an excuse to get away from the two of them, you grab the box that Martha has just shut and make for the exit.
“Don’t worry, I’ll get this one!” you call over your shoulder. “You two keep working.” As soon as you’re out of the tent you drop the forced smile, allowing your face to relax as you sigh. Maybe you can get “lost” while delivering this box just to give yourself a longer break from hearing those two bicker.
The plan begins to form in your mind. But before you can work out the logistics of it all, you turn a corner and ram into someone with your box. You both exclaim in surprise as you stumble backwards, the box in your hands slipping from your grasp. At the same time that you lunge forward to save it, the other person does too. Your hands meet, his settling under yours as you adjust your grip on the box.
“Got it?” The man you bumped into asks.
“Yes, thank you. I’m so sorry, I didn’t see you there.”
“Oh, don’t worry about it. Most of the fault is probably mine – walking too fast, distracted.” He smiles, and for the first time since your interaction began, you realize that the man you ran into is handsome. Tall, with a head of reddish hair that you’re sure to remember. But he’s got a kind smile, and more importantly, it reaches all the way to his eyes. Despite the fact that you crashed into him, he seems to be in good humor.
You smile back at him. “I was doing the same. We can just split the blame, fifty-fifty, and call it even.”
“That sounds fair . . .” The man’s voice trails off, his eyes flicking to the box in your hands. Only then do you realize that his hands are still touching yours, still helping you hold the box.
Huffing a small laugh, he removes them, moving back into his own space. For a moment the two of you stand, not speaking, but smiling. Surely there’s something that you could say, though. Every thought that pops into your mind seems silly, though – or worse, the recurring memory of what Elizabeth said keeps coming back to you. It really is too bad that a lot of them won’t be coming back. How do you know who will return from combat?
Finally, the man before you clears his throat. “Where are you taking that?”
“Oh, just over to the other aid station.”
The man holds out his arms. “Would you like for me to carry it for you? I mean, it only seems fair.”
No, it’s fine, I’ve got it, dies on your tongue. Handing the box off to him, you nod. “Thank you.”
“I didn’t catch your name,” the man says as the two of you start off.
“(Y/N). (Y/N)(Y/L/N).”
“Well, it’s nice to mee you, (Y/N). I’m Dick Winters,” he says. Now that he’s moving, the morning sunlight glints off the bar on his collar. Lieutenant Dick Winters, it would appear. Other men might have flaunted that rank, made it the first word out of their mouths. Not Dick, though. Interesting.
The two of you make idle chitchat as you walk. All too soon you reach the aid station. Dick deposits the box with the nurses working there. If he notices the way that they gawk at the two of you entering the tent together, he’s polite enough not to comment on it. Your fellow nurses on the other hand, seem to have plenty of comments that they would like to make. The two of you have no sooner stepped out of the tent than you hear whispers break out behind you.
“So,” you say, trying to drown out the voices behind you. “Where are you off to?”
Is it your imagination, or does the lieutenant let out a little sigh as he thinks of going off to whatever duty awaits him?
“I’ve got a meeting,” he says. “And you?”
“Back to the other aid station,” you answer. “Packing more boxes. Maybe crashing into more men, but I’ve yet to decide about that last part.”
He laughs. Not the small, polite laugh he had earlier, but a bright one that sounds jolly and clear. It’s contagious. “Well, maybe after my meeting is done, I can come crash into you again? Maybe I could help move those boxes.”
Your brain feels like it’s full of exclamation points when the meaning of his words fully hits you – he wants to spend more time with you! No amount of effort could contain your smile. With other men you might try to hide it, but you allow Dick to see.
“I would like that very much.”
Dick stops walking. You’ve come a sort of crossroads within the camp, that place where people have to make choices, to part ways, or start on a new path. The one that you stand at doesn’t seem nearly that full of poetic symbolism, though, because something about the look on Dick’s face tells you that he will be back as soon as this meeting is over. He doesn’t seem like a man who would leave someone waiting.
“I’ll see you later, Lieutenant Winters,” you say.
“You can call me ‘Dick.’”
“Okay. Then I’ll see you later, Dick.”
He offers you a small nod. “I’ll see you later, Miss (Y/L/N).”
“Oh, you can call me (Y/N).”
“Then I’ll see you later, (Y/N).” With that, he takes his leave, heading off to his meeting. For a moment you stand, watching him go, only to see him glance back over his shoulder at you, still smiling as he walks away.
Only when he’s out of sight do you take your own leave. Martha and Elizabeth will ask where you’ve been, what took you so long, but they don’t need to know. They’ll figure it out soon enough. When Elizabeth, at least, sees the handsome lieutenant, she won’t be able to stay mad at your tardiness. You had been planning to stall returning to the other nurses, after all, and this certainly was the best way you could have done it.
You blush all the way back to the aid station, trying not to get your hopes up for what might come next, but still daring to dream.
