Have a big ol’ info dump about Spirits and Ghosts in the Flicker AU! To get my thoughts organized mostly. It’s super long because these two classes are the foundations of pretty much everything else ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
Think of this like looking into a bit of Donnie’s research, cuz this would basically be most of what he learned from Drax or at the mystic library.
There are also a handful of other paranormal entities in this world… so if you want the full list, I’ll try getting that done as quickly as I can.
Spirits:
The spirit is the most common form of afterlife! They are souls that are fully satisfied with their life and don’t have any desire to stick around — they are ready to move on.
They are bound together by strong familial bonds, with or without blood relation. These bonds empower each other and create a space in the afterlife for souls to safely go to, but it also means they can still keep track of living family as well. If their bond is strong enough, like the Hamatos, they can also be summoned and visible in the living world!
On a few occasions, a spirit may come down to the mortal world on their own terms, though it takes a lot of energy. They usually have the backing of the other ancestors in the family.
Families with strong mystic connections are even more powerful, building with each generation as more ancestors are available to provide the living members that strength. (Despite the amount of mysticism in the world, this is fairly rare.) This also means the spirits can provide individual support by attaching themselves to a living person, similar to Karai’s bond with April.
Spirits in the living world are fully visible and, to a point, tangible as well. They can choose to hide themselves, or to only allow select people to perceive them, but it is fully in their control. Their appearance relies entirely on their sense of identity, manifesting into what they see as their truest self.
They can also fully see other entities, even if those entities cannot be seen by mortals.
Ghosts:
While not totally common, if you are not a spirit after death, it’s most likely you would be a ghost instead. These are souls that are not satisfied with their life in some way, whether that be unfinished business, or just a reluctance to leave the mortal world. Some ghosts know exactly why they are still around, whereas others may never know.
Ghosts are fairly weak. They do not have their full soul, as most of it is still trying to move on. Because of this, not only are they left with an empty, unfinished feeling, but they are not at all visible to the naked eye. Only the ones with a connection to death can see them, such as mediums or other dead beings. Some yokai will have the ability to sense their presence, such as skeletons… but otherwise not know who or what it is.
Certain crystals or spells can also provide mortals the ability to see/hear the dead, though they are very hard to come by.
They also do not have much control over the physical world. Touching objects can take a lot of energy and practice, as trying too much can drain them to exhaustion. However, though a bit trickier to get a hold of, messing with electricity is far less tiring, meaning lights, appliances, computers, and anything of the sort are all much easier for a skilled ghost to interact with!
Similarly, ghosts can easily manipulate small flames. They are the easiest thing to interact with, though only to an extent. Blowing out candles was always a yokai’s first reliable sign of paranormal activity.
Other signs are as follows: cold spots, moving objects, flickering lights, air movement, knocking, or, eventually, staticky screens, appliances beeping/malfunctioning, music, and even messages/emails/notifications.
Due to their lack of soul, a visual form is also harder to control. Where spirits are seen as their truest self, a ghost can only appear as how they were in the moment of death. For many, that may not be much of an issue, having died unexpectedly in their sleep or from an inner sickness. For others, such as Leo, it is a far more gruesome look.
A ghost can move on to become a spirit, if their needs/wants have been satisfied. Most do. Some never will. Others will transition into a different class, such as phantoms, specters, banshees, or poltergeists.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE: not every sign of paranormal activity is ACTUALLY a paranormal being. Some yokai have the ability to turn invisible. Some yokai are cruel and mischievous. You cannot always rely on physical means of confirmation, such as ghost hunting technology or Ouija boards. Mediums or spirits are the most recommended source, but spells and crystals can also do should you need visible proof.

More information on the departments to come.
[Image description: a letter that reads:
Dear Seeker,
We are glad we found you. Our community here at Desolation University of Pseudosciences wish to invite you into our hallowed halls. The staff and students provide a safe space for those looking to broaden their search for knowledge where society and academia had once shut their doors. We have award-winning programs such as Restoring Literature, Criminology, Investigating Paranormal Activity, Insanity, and Performing Arts. These programs and many more offered here at Desolation U are placed into categories that we like to call the Departments. You may find yourself intrigued with any one of our eight departments and for that, we encourage you to look into pursuing an education with us. Each department has its own colourful cast of programs, activities, and students. We are not to be held liable for the actions of our psychology students. Furthermore, do not engage in the activities of our psychology students.
Aside from participating in our prestigious courses, you will also have plenty of opportunities to create lasting bonds with other students in our many interesting clubs, such as The Forest Watcher's club and The Society of Unknown, or even join in student-led events such as the DCC weekly Ouija circle or the three way prank war. Note: do not interfere with the prank war unless you are in one of the participating departments. The students here have cultivated a very vibrant community and leave many ways for everyone to get involved. For legal reasons, most activities performed by our students may not be advertised here, as exposing outsiders to such knowledge has led to side effects beyond human comprehension. Don't let this information scare you, however, as our staff hold a seminar at the beginning of every school year to make sure our students know how to handle the very powerful knowledge we teach.
Highly praised for our ability to summon demons and for keeping our students alive and well despite the horrors, our institution is perfect for all who enter. Desolation U has also received first place awards in confusion, power, and liminality. We also happen to reside in a town. It is a town! You may hear rumours in town about the monsters housed in our walls or our students committing heinous acts of god. We urge you to remember that these are just rumours and should be ignored at all costs. There is a place for everyone in our institution, explore our programs and darken our halls today.
Best regards, Dean Anonymous Iteration Eleven.]

Horrortober 2023
Hi babies!
So, I know it's crazy early to be planning for this, but I have a great idea for it and I'd love to hear your guys' opinions!
For October this year, I'm doing Horrortober, where I will be writing pieces based off the four subgenres of horror: Killers, Monsters, Paranormal, and Psychological.
I will be writing eight pieces, so there will be two characters per category. There might be some sexy themes in some of them but it definitely won't be the main point in the plot.
Here's where y'all come in: Should Horrortober be multifandom, or just consist of Pedro's characters?
Multifandom would include Pedro's characters, as well as Black Noir, Simon Riley, John Price, König, Eddie/Venom, Paz Vizsla, and any other suggested characters! (:
The latter would obviously just be Pedro's characters.
Once we decide if this will be multifandom or just Pedro's fandom, then we'll vote on which characters will be picked for each category! 😊
Let me know your thoughts! The link to decide between fandoms is below!

The Red Demon: Oni
by The_Storm_Hero_Tempest
Izuku was framed for betraying UA. But all evidence pointed to him with traces of his DNA, Fingerprints, and footage of his girlfriends(Class 1A girls, Class 1B girls, Nejire, Mei, Melissa, Katsumi, Shoka) nearly being killed by him. Only All Might, Gran Torino, Recovery Girl, Sir Nighteye, Endeavor, and Shoto believed him. fortunately, his girlfriends woke up and proved his innocence. Unfortunately, they were too late since Izuku was reported as killed when a group of Heroes raided Tartarus and slaughtered a lot of prisoners. Momo (was with her parents out of country when the other girls were attacked) was given OFA due to Izuku's quick thinking but fell into a depression after her boyfriend's death. Guide 3 to basic astrology
Of houses and meanings
Hey guys! I hope you’re enjoying the readings and the guides so far! Astrology is actually super simple when it's explained properly, and I really hope to be able to do that for you, and keep explaining through examples! So without fooling about, let's get right into the third guide!
If you remember, in guide 1 we covered the 12 houses and what lords are, and in the second one we covered malefics, benefics and planets. In this guide we will cover what each house stands for, and how Vedic astrology elaborates upon this, with a bunch of tips and hacks from my side to help out.
Lets first get into what each house stands for, and then we’ll get further in, because there is so so much it can do. Remember, going by each house and each sign number, each sign is the original ruler of the house with the same number (cancer rules the fourth house naturally in every chart due to it being the 4th sign, similarly, pisces rules the 12th house in every chart as its the 12th sign) Really cool fact here? Each house also represents a body part of the person! So lets get into the first list of basic meanings-
First house - it represents our mind and physical body. In terms of body parts, we have our face, hair, pituitary gland and spinal cord. It is the original house of Aries, so you can attribute objectives like our passions, outwardly personality, physique and more to this house.
Second house- it represents wealth, family and vehicles. In terms of body parts, we have our throat, eyes, nose, tongue, teeth, tonsils and neck associated with it. It is the original house of Taurus, so you can attribute material attributes like jewelry and primary education (upto about 10 years) and more to this house.
Third house- it represents communication, relatives, younger siblings, short distance travel and short term goals. The shoulders, arms, the collar bones, hands, and thyroid gland are reprinted by the third house. As the natural house of Gemini, it also represents our communication, intellect, over the internet communication and so much more among others.
Fourth house- it represents the mother, the childhood, motherland, houses, agriculture, high school level education, private life and more. Chest and Lungs area, Heart, Upper spine and others are represented by this. As the natural house of cancer, it reprints the peace of mind, emotions, mother, and more within the chart.
Fifth house-it represents children, past life karma, creativity, undergraduate education, speculation, romance and more. Stomach, Lower heart area, Liver, Spleen, Lower back, kidneys are represented by it. As the natural house of Leo, wealth, powerful positions in life, competitions and more is represented by this.
Sixth house- debts, loans, hospitals, enemies, surgeries, illness, daily work, servants and more.Pancreas, small intestine, lower waist level, lower back, urinary bladder, kidneys, pregnancy for a female are seen from this house. As the natural house of virgo, business transactions, IT skills, cynicism, small animals and hygiene is seen from it.
Seventh house- the courthouse, the spouse, relationships, partnership, foreign land, outsiders, the world, legal contracts are among those seen from this house.External sexual organs, sexuality, sexual habits, large intestine and anal area are seen from this house. As the natural house of libra, we see romance, ability to connect with other, business partnerships and spouse through this house too.
Eight house- transformations, hidden wealth, life span, occult, accidents, inheritance, routine and others are seen from this house.internal sexual organs, anal area, testis area for males, Chronic or long term disease, incurable disease, terminal sickness are seen from this house. As the natural house of scorpio, we see research, internal turmoil, detachment from materialism, occult, addictions and more from here too.
Ninth house- the father, higher education, teachers, religion, traditions, long distance travel, fortune, luck, good karma, places of worship, and others are seen from this house.Thighs, legs, tailbone area, bone marrow, hips, hip joints and the arterial system are seen from this house. As the natural house of Sagittarius, spiritual knowledge, education, father, luck  and tradition are seen from here.
Tenth house- the job, career, fame, public image, public opinion, government, honor, management and more are seen from here. knee and kneecaps, joints and bones are seen from this house. As the natural house of Capricorn, we see family life, public image, power in life and more from here.
Eleventh house- income, gain, social circle, luck, promotions, elder sibling and more are seen from here. The shanks, ankles, shin bone, right leg, left ear and left arm and Circulatory problems are seen from here. As the natural house of Aquarius, unconventionality, aloofness and more are seen from this.
Twelfth house- isolation, liberation, paranormal, occult, losses, bed pleasures, sadness, addictions, creativity, long distance travel, the other dimensions, aliens, psychic abilities, hidden weakness and strength and more are seen from this house. The feet, left eye for males and right eye for females,  hospitalization, hard to diagnose diseases, sleep related diseases like insomnia, somnambulism and more are seen from here. As the natural house of Pisces, we see creativity, spirituality and occult related activities from here.
Note
coming to the fun thing here, how to predict beyond what the houses represent. All we need to do it count houses away from a certain house here.
Remember for this method, we’ll be counting houses away from the house we started from, in an anti clock-wise manner, where the house we started in being counted as 1.
For example. Say I want to find my spouse’s career, so I will count 10 houses away from my seventh house (since my seventh house is my spouse, and 10th house means a career), and doing this I will reach the 4th house. Now I can analyze my 4th house and its lord to give me an idea of what the job will be.
Another example could be, I want to learn about the success I will get from my job, so I will look at the 11th house ( 2nd house means gain, and 10th house is my own career), thus I will now be seeing the gains from my career. Similarly, the 6th house will show my mother’s younger siblings (its the third from the 4th house, third house is house of younger siblings) and the 2nd house will show me my mother’s other siblings (11th house is the house of older siblings, and the 4th house is of the mother).
I can even look at my spouse’s mother’s siblings too! Now I will first look at the 4th house from my 7th house (4th house of mother and 7th of spouse) and then I’ll arrive at the 10th house, which when analyzed will tell me about the spouse’s mother, and then traveling 3 houses away to the 12th house will tell me about her younger siblings, and 11 houses away to the 8th house will tell me about her older siblings. For knowing your spouse’s lifespan, look at the 8th from 7th house (8th house of death and 7th of spouse).
In this way, you can analyze just about anything and everything with one simple trick.
The four types of houses-
The twelve houses are divided into 4 chief categories (among the gazillion categories), and these categories really help us understand a chart better. These are-
Artha (meaning) houses - houses that deal with tangible material wealth and knowledge. These are the 2nd house (of wealth), the 6th house (of health and daily routine), and 10th house (of career).
Moksha (peace) houses-  houses that deal with spirituality, death and liberation from birth cycle. These are the 4th house (of mind and property), 8th house (of death and occult) and 12th house (of spirituality and liberation)
Dharma (duty) houses- houses that deal with the soul’s mission and life purpose, as well as past life karma. These are the 1st house (of self), the 5th house(of past life karma) and 9th house(of fortune and good karma).
Kama (desire) houses- houses that deal with one’s desires and interest in life, such as love, relationship, money, children and more. These are the 3rd house (intimate family), the 7th house (spouse) and the 11th house (gains and fame).
Note
The houses have many classifications, but the 2nd house and the 7th house are called the Marka (death causing) houses. They cause death or loss to planets which go inside these houses. This is because they are 12th (house of loss) to the 3rd and 8th houses of Jeev Shakti (life force). Thus, planets in 2nd and 7th are often afflicting your mental health and causing troubles in your daily life.
Further, we have the Kendra (central) houses, which represent the cardinal values of one’s life. The planets in these houses and the lords of these houses are extremely powerful, and can influence the chart easily. These are the 1st house (of self), 4th house (of mother and mind), 7th house (of spouse and partnerships) and the 10th house ( of career and the outside world).
Lastly, we also have the Dushtana houses, or the evil houses. The lord of these planets and planets within these houses have a negative influence on our lives (need to be carefully analyzed, this was a blanket statement). These are the 6th house (of illness and debt), 8th house (of death and occult) and 12th house(of losses and paranormal).
So this was it! Let me know if you enjoyed it!

"You wonder, "Who is this?" Yes... I shall make that clear first. My name is Korekiyo Shinguji... I am called the Ultimate Anthropologist."
~*~
Hello everyone, my name is Milo, and today I’ll be doing my best to cover one of my favorite characters in the Danganronpa universe, Korekiyo Shinguji. He is originally from the 3rd mainline game, New Danganronpa v3: Killing Harmony. Since I don’t physically own the game, I’m basing most of this essay entirely on the Danganronpa Wiki page for Shinguji. Please read that if you desire a more lengthy look at his actions from an unbiased perspective since this one leans more towards empathy than hatred. Whoops!
We first properly meet him after talking to everyone else inside of Hope’s Peak. He’s in the main hall and standing away from the doors leading out to the courtyard. When he introduces himself, Shinguji goes on to talk about anthropology and the beauty of humanity. This proceeds to creep Akamatsu out.
Alongside that, in Chapter 3, we are unfortunately forced to see his relationship with his sister. It’s weird and only gets weirder if you spend two of your Free Time events talking to him when you first play as Akamatsu. He’s evaluated that all girls present at the academy would be great “friends” for his sister, barring Iruma and Harukawa. This is because Shinguji believes that Harukawa doesn’t believe in the power of love, and Iruma is just… well, she’s Iruma. Hardly the girl you would want to send home to your parents.
This weird incest plotline is unfortunately present in most Danganronpa games, such as Leon and his cousin (though one-sided on his cousin’s behalf; he didn’t like her), Tsumugi in the Love Hotel (if you consider that canon), and Monotaro & Monophanie (which is then implemented into Gokuharu’s execution, killing them both).
His sister’s name is never disclosed in-game or in any other Danganronpa media, so the fandom dubbed her “Miyadera/Miyatera,” which is an alternate way of reading Shinguji’s last name. The miya character - represented as 宮 - and tera character - 寺 - are both present in Shinguji, 真宮寺. For the rest of this essay/paper, I’ll be referring to his sister as Miyadera, and himself as Shinguji.
I’ll be getting deeper into his mischaracterization later on, but I want to talk about his appearance for now. Mainly, his hair, his mask, and the lipstick he wears. From what we see of Miyadera in Shinguji’s execution, if that is Miyadera at all, we can see that she had long hair, and when Shinguji was turned into a ghost, it was the exact shade of Shinguji’s hair. From here, we can assume that Miyadera looks exactly, if not similar, to Shinguji.
His lipstick and mask are results of representations of his tulpa, Miyadera. Tulpa is defined as “a concept in mysticism and the paranormal of a being or object which is created through spiritual or mental powers.” In much simpler terms, it is an object or living thing that was created/imagined through spiritual/mental abilities. Shinguji gained a tulpa by being beaten half to death by villagers shortly after arriving there. When he was in a state between life and death, he saw his sister, who joined his subconscious and took control of his body whenever his mask was off. It’s why we only see him take off his make once Saihara dubs him the culprit of Chapter 3, and why his voice suddenly took a more feminine tone. A quote from Miyadera, which can be found in the game, is, "Sweet Korekiyo, calm yourself... Their words are all hollow. There is no meaning to any of them... You must teach these ignorant children a lesson."
That statement can be interpreted two ways, one; that she’s trying to calm him down and two; she’s repeating whatever she said to him during childhood. It’s implied that Miyadera passed away from disease sometime before Killing Harmony takes place, which is both a good and bad thing. It’s great because then we have some time frame of how she was and how she acted when Shinguji knew her best.
Whenever I read the quote above, or any of her quotes, to be honest, I am filled with a sense of dread, or even, despair. The following quote especially makes me feel terrible; "Calm yourself, Korekiyo. You mustn't raise your voice. You mustn't stutter. You mustn't lose composure. You mustn't become flustered. You mustn't waver. Look at their horrid faces. This sorry lot is not worth agonizing over."
Have you noticed how she’s setting guidelines on how to defend himself? She’s turning Shinguji’s attention away from Saihara and the trial and to her because she knows that Shinguji trusts her even after all these years.
You might be wondering, “Milo, what the hell does that all have to do with Shinguji?” And I’ll tell you plain and simple: he was abused by Miyadera. Shocking, I know. Having Shinguji rave and rant about being in love with her, only to be a victim? Sadly, it’s very true indeed. Shinguji was most likely groomed and gaslighted into thinking that Miyadera loved him when that was not the case.
Gaslighting is defined as, “[to] manipulate (someone) by psychological means into questioning their own sanity.” From the two quotes I provided, it doesn’t seem to make sense. Miyadera only sounds like a kind, worrisome older sister. Incorrect, I say. She’s emotionally gaslighting him, trying to make him believe that the trial makes no sense and he shouldn’t worry about any of them. I can also bet she used this tactic to control him as a younger person as well.
It’s a well-known fact that children are both impressionable and gullible. If an older sister figure came up to you as a child and told you to do unmentionable things, unfortunately, you might follow her directions. Shinguji states that his sister was a sickly girl who often stayed in the hospital. When she would come home, he’d be at his easiest to manipulate. Why would his dear, sweet, sickly, older sister ever lie to him?
Next, I’m going to be covering his relationships with other students, namely Shuichi Saihara and Rantaro Amami. These will delve further into spoiler territory, so if you didn’t already read the warnings I put in place, here is your extra warning for spoilers for Chapter 3 of Killing Harmony.
To start with, I’ll be exploring his poorer relationships first. Most of the girls fit into this category, namely Iruma, Harukawa, Chabashira, and Yonaga - that means he has a terrible standing with four of the eight girls present at the beginning of Killing Harmony, five if you count Yumeno’s way of dealing with Chabashira’s murder. Shinguji even taunts her once they solve that mystery, stating, “Let me guess, you’ll never forgive me. Himiko, you must hate me so very much right now. Maybe you’d feel better if I was executed by Monokuma…”
Shinguji has a poor relationship with Iruma and Harukawa due to seeing them as “unfit” to be “friends” with Miyadera. He has a poor relationship with Chabashira because he’s a degenerate male, but he still thinks she made a good friend for his sister. His poor relationship with Yonaga is shown in Chapter 3 when Yonaga forms the student council. Once again, I’m making amends to some parts of the characters. I’ll be referring to Yonaga’s god as God, simply because Atua is an actual Polynesian god in real life. Shinguji doesn’t worship any god, and so wants to study Yonaga’s God purely for anthropologic purposes. This displeases Yonaga, who then states that God's business hours are closed for the day. In Chapter 3 when Yumeno brings up Yonaga’s God, he simply asks whether or not they’re done talking about it, cementing his distrust in faith.
Next, I’ll cover his better relationships. Akamatsu isn’t too terribly creeped out by him and instead sees Shinguji as a kind guy who cares about his sister. Akamatsu even apologizes for saying that Shinguji would be into inc*st, this event either taking place in his first or second Free Time event. I’m saving his and Saihara’s relationship for last since I’ll have the most to write about then. Instead, please enjoy the news that in the events of Ultimate Talent Development Plan (UTDP for typing purposes), Shinguji and Amami are actually great friends. In Amami’s first free time event, he tells Akamatsu that Korekiyo has a strong personality, but she’ll be able to understand him plenty if she takes time to. It’s also stated that Amami emphasizes that Shinguji is also the calm and clever type.
Lastly, I’ll be exploring his relationship with Saihara. It’s slightly rocky, if only because Shinguji hasn’t let go of his sister yet, but it’s miles better than his relationship with Chabashira. Slight side note before we begin, I’ll be discounting the Love Hotel scene mostly because I’m a minor and I don’t feel completely comfortable having to watch that simply because I’m writing an analysis. As the game progresses to Chapter 3, Shinguji and Saihara have built trust between themselves. While Saihara still found Shinguji creepy, he [Saihara] never discounted him simply for existing. There was even a point where Shinguji offered to help Saihara communicate with Akamatsu from beyond the grave, though he was turned down.
Korekiyo Shinguji is a misunderstood and somewhat tragic character who usually gets disregarded and uncredited all because people do not like him. However he’s not an “uwu soft twamatized bean <3” either. He’s a strong character who has questionable morals at best and a terrible representation of an abused character at worst.

9 Signs of Your Past Life
Have you live before?
The idea that our souls or spirits reincarnate reaches back at least 3,000 years. Discussions of the subject can be found in the ancient traditions of India, Greece, and the Celtic Druids. It’s a tantalizing belief that our spirits are not confined to the seven, eight, or nine decades of life on Earth but that we have lived before and that we might live again.
Do you believe that you have had a past life or lives growing up, working, loving, and suffering in roles very different from the one you are now playing out? Perhaps you were a different race, socio-economic class, or gender. Some even believe you could have been another living species entirely a dog, gazelle, or fish perhaps.
Those who believe in past lives suggest that there might be clues to what our past lives were in the various complex aspects that make up our current physical, emotional, intellectual, and psychological personalities.
DÉJÀ VU
Most of us have experienced the eerie feeling of déjà vu, the sudden, surprising feeling that an event we are going through at the moment has happened exactly this way before.
Déjà vécu, an event already experienced or lived through.
Déjà senti, already felt, perhaps triggered by a voice or music.
Déjà visité, a place so familiar we feel we’ve been there before.
While scientists and psychiatrists insist there are neurological explanations for these phenomena, others wonder if these strange feelings could be vague, fleeting memories of past lives. You enter a house or building, for example, in a town you’ve never visited before. Yet every detail of that place is familiar. You know what’s in the next room and up the stairs. You have the overwhelming feeling that you’ve been there before. Have you in a past life?
WEIRD MEMORIES
Your child may have memories of childhood events that we know never really happened. Are they just remembering a child’s fantasy, misunderstanding, or even a dream that they now interprets as reality? Or are they remembering something that happened to her before they were born into this lifetime?
Human memory is a fraught with error and incongruities, so the question is, is it faulty memory or a remembrance of lives past?
DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES
Recurring dreams and nightmares also have been suggested as being memories or at least clues of past lives.
These are not memories of places or events that have happened in this life, yet they recur in my dreams often. Are they memories of something important that happened in a past life?
Likewise, can nightmares be reflections of past life traumas that have clung to our spirits and haunt our sleep?
FEARS AND PHOBIAS
Where do your fears and phobias come from? Fear of such things as spiders, snakes, and heights seem to be built into the human psyche as part of our evolved survival instinct.
Many people suffer from phobias that are completely irrational. Fear of water, of birds, of numbers, of mirrors, of plants, of specific colors. The list goes on and on. People suffer from all kinds of bizarre phobias.
While several years on a psychologist’s couch might get to the root of those odd fears, those who believe in past lives wonder if they are carried over from a previous lifetime. Does a fear of water indicate a previous death by drowning? Could a fear of the color red suggest, for example, that a person was struck or killed by a red street car?
AFFINITY FOR FOREIGN CULTURE
You probably know a person who was born and raised in the United States but is an ardent anglophile, a person who is interested to the point of obsession with British culture. You might also know someone who can think of little else but getting dressed up and acting the part for the next Renaissance Fair or Civil War reenactment.
There are philes for virtually every culture on the planet, both modern and ancient, affecting people who seem to have no rationale for their obsessions. Why? Are they merely trying to find familiarity in a culture in which they lived 100 years ago? 1,000 years ago?
PASSIONS
It’s good to have things that we are passionate about, as long as they do not become obsessive and debilitating. From where do passions arise for books, art, antiques, fashion, gardening, theatre, cars, trains, aircraft, the paranormal or any number of other subjects?
Intense interest in a specific subject might be totally natural, of course, but might there be a past life connection in some cases?
UNCONTROLLED HABITS
The dark side of passions are those uncontrolled habits and obsessions that take over people’s lives and can even marginalize them in society. Obsessive-compulsives and hoarders fit into this category. A man who has to turn the light switch off and on ten times before he leaves a room; a woman who collects newspapers into six-foot-high stacks throughout her house because she cannot bear to get rid of them.
Each of us has at least one bad habit, from fingernail biting to gossiping to procrastination. The extreme forms include addictions to everything from television to Facebook to drugs. Again, psychological explanations can be found for these uncontrolled habits, yet those who believe in reincarnation say they might have roots in past lives.
INEXPLICABLE PAINS
Do you have aches and pains that the doctors cannot quite pinpoint or find a medical explanation for? You might be labeled a hypochondriac, a person who imagines his or her ailments. Or, as past life proponents suggest, those mysterious pains, sores, cramps, and more could be reflections of suffering you endured in a previous existence.
BIRTHMARKS
Birthmarks have been touted as evidence for reincarnation. In one fascinating case, an Indian boy claimed to remember the life of a man named Maha Ram, who was killed with a shotgun fired at close range. This boy had an array of birthmarks in the center of his chest that looked like they could possibly correspond to a shotgun blast. So the story was checked out. Indeed, there was a man named Maha Ram who was killed by a shotgun blast to the chest. An autopsy report recorded the man’s chest wounds which corresponded directly with the boy’s birthmarks.
In a similar way, various other physical traits, even deformities, have been suggested as having their precedent in a person’s former life.

more spectrestuck shit
+ the trolls are the spirits, maybe? some of them. + the beta trolls are low-level spirits, generally, and are easier to attract + deal with. + the alpha trolls are flightier, and have more power, though they are naturally drawn to protecting their younger counterparts and may appear alongside them to cause more trouble for the kids. after so long, they've begun to slip further from the spectral plane, exhibiting less humanlike qualities and often appearing in 'thinner' forms. + reports of high-level 'ancestral' spirits are always circulating in the paranormal community, but are more often than not dismissed as attention-seeking hoaxes. these are the ones john loathes after a long day, because they're most often 'spotted' in the early morning or late night hours. + these ancestral spirits are in fact real, but have the least tethered forms. more often than not, they're part of real possessions, wherein an exorcist (most likely rose) needs to be called in to simply shake them from their current vessels. it's speculated that (due to john's equipment frequently and completely breaking in their presences) they're too powerful to truly ‘move on’, and can only move from place to place. dirk specialises in creating vessels for them, since he is passionate about animatronics, and the electrical components can allow for easier communication. + spirits have been known to seek non-human vessels, such as animals, and will often peacefully coexist with them. later, however, they may seek human contact. this is when their corporeality wavers, and if the human they try to possess is too weak or simply unaware of their presence, said human may take on the previous vessel's traits over time. (the most famous case of this being the transformation of one jade harley, who became a werewolf after her pet dog was unable to be exorcised and made physical contact with her. she was reportedly affected badly enough that no further exorcisms could slow or halt the transformation.) - sprites!  + in some rarer cases, spirits can fuse together with each other, creating truly conflicted beings known as fusions or collision spirits. (these replace ^2 sprites.) more work is required to calm them initially, but roxy's sessions are often beneficial. more often than not, the spirits are peaceful when they have come to a mutual agreement and can coexist. contrary to popular belief, it isn't possible to split a collision spirit into its seperate beings. + Dave was temporarily fused with a crow spirit, but was able to expel it after a good few sessions with Rose. He maintains a feathery ruff around his neck and is believed to have small wings, but these have never been publicly sighted because he wears a baggy hoodie all the time. + In certain spirits, those linked to the fabled “ancestors”, a phenomenon has been observed - while they have clear power levels within typical categories, they seem to have their own systems, and display different levels of animalistic behaviour and corporeality. The outliers have been observed momentarily by Jake as a pair, rumoured to be siblings, with remarkable exoskeletons. While J. English believes they were extremely weak, these exoskeletons appeared to be fully solid, but were not separate from the spirits themselves. Their “ancestor” has not been located. + The Vantases - those 'outliers' mentioned - may be able to assist other spirits with restoring either their physical corporeality (how solid/tethered to the mortal plane they are) or human aspects, in order to parallel a limeblood's soothing abilities. + Within this personal hierarchy, their lesser spirits are more prone to animalistic behaviour patterns and are easier to soothe. The highest of the weaker spirits (Eridan and Feferi), who prefer to wander the seashore, are in themselves powerful enough to cause John’s equipment to have problems. They, as with their sibling-equivalents and each “ancestor”, toe the line between the spectral plane and the corporeal world. + Doc Scratch exists as a strange being with a ouija board head, fitting of his role as a bridge of understanding between two worlds. Nobody’s quite sure what his goals are, but everyone is more than creeped out by him. The exception is Rose, who is contacted by him frequently outside of her two jobs. (Alternatively an eight ball instead of the cue, but the predictions are blatantly visible on his face and are his method of 'speaking', if not through some type of text.) + John saw Dave's wings once, walking in on him changing his shirt. Rose has, of course, seen them multiple times, as she was responsible for the exorcisms needed to shake the crow spirit out of him. Jade has her suspicions, but hasn't had a chance to confirm them. + Dave probably sells pillows stuffed with these crow feathers as merchandise, but only he, Rose and John know their true origins. + In this strange spirit hierarchy, there exist a few that have lesser spectres floating around them at all times - they are mournful, and extremely protective of these smaller beings, but are thought to embody the lost souls of mothers without children. When Roxy first attempted to bring one of these into the mortal plane, to communicate their intentions, Dirk had to contain them properly (with their 'motes' - the guarded beings are little more to the human eye than specks of light) before they would calm in the slightest. (Jadebloods!)

What Is IWATC? Click here to download a free QuickStart!
I WAS A TEENAGE CREATURE is a narrative-focused, urban fantasy tabletop roleplaying game that emulates a young adult paranormal TV show such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Teen Wolf, or even the Dresden Files. What keeps fans of this genre coming back for every single episode of the show? Is it the monster of the week...or the angst and drama of the main characters' lives? An exciting paranormal threat or creature certainly helps, but it's mostly the audience wanting to witness the main characters go through the emotional wringer (and hopefully emerge generally victorious on the other side.) In this game, that's exactly what happens...it's actually the point of the game.
In IWATC, it doesn't matter how strong the werewolf is, or how fast the vampire is, or how beautiful the fae is...what matters is how each of these characters feels, WHY they're doing something, not just how capable they are of doing it. When the monster of the week invades Signal Lakes High School grasping the Hunter guy's mom by the throat, of course he attacks it...but why? Out of LOVE for his mother, or RAGE at the monster for threatening her? FEAR he's about to lose her? Or maybe he's PROUD to have learned the family business well and proves it by saving her all by himself! The Player tells their character's Story in this game, choosing why they do the things they do and how they try to do them.
The I WAS A TEENAGE CREATURE core gamebook is the complete roleplaying game, all in one ~350 page book. This epic tome of urban fantasy will contain everything needed to tell gripping and exciting young-adult paranormal drama stories with in-depth characters that have built-in emotional backgrounds and motivations. The book includes an introduction and an overview of the mechanics; an extensive character creation section that includes the character's base emotional matrix; explanations of the various Creature Types and their paranormal abilities; the metaphysical "laws" of reality for the setting; the game mechanics rules; GM sections on guiding character creation, running the game, creating scenarios & campaigns, and customizing the game's setting; the base setting of Signal Lakes; and 23 pre-generated characters along with three ready-to-run scenarios or "episodes" of the IWATC "show." The game also includes both a table of contents and extensive indexes to make locating desired information easy, as well as a variety of appendices for looking up point costs, mechanical effects, converting the crunch-light narrative mechanics into reliable dice modifiers, and more!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IWATC uses a simple Success-based d10  system where the Players roll a number of d10s equal to their character's appropriate stat, perhaps plus a few dice for a relevant Skill. Each die generates -1, 0, 1, or 2 Successes; if the roll's total Successes are equal to or greater than the roll's Difficulty, the character successfully performs the action. There are only four stats, covering ANYTHING a character might try to do: Might, Reflex, Insight, and Codex. Skills are broad categories that can add more dice to any roll, as long as the Player tells their character's story in a way that makes using the Skill make sense. I WAS A TEENAGE CREATURE is all about making the characters and their Story as awesome and dramatic as possible, which means that creative story-telling gets well rewarded!
So, the Player rolls some number of dice when their character tries something, but what do their emotions have to do with it? The characters' Emotions determine how many Successes each die generates. Each character's Emotions are arranged in four opposing pairs, with each pair's intensity rated from 1-10. When they attempt an action, a character chooses which of their Emotions is motivating that action, then rolls the appropriate number of d10s against that rating. Rolls motivated by a Positive Emotion generate 1 Success for each die that rolls higher than the rating, 2 Successes for rolls of 10, zero Successes for rolls equal to or less than the Emotion's rating, and -1 Success on rolls of 1, removing a Success from the combined total.
Tumblr media
If this is a PROUD roll, it only has 1 Success, but if it's a SHAME roll, it has THREE Successes!
Conversely, actions motivated by Negative Emotions want to roll low, generating 2 Successes on rolls of 1, a single Success for other numbers less than the Negative Emotion's rating, zero Successes for rolls equal to or higher than the rating, and removing a Success for rolls of 10. In the picture above, if a monster is attacking Dylan's father and he made this roll out of LOVE for his father, he got no Successes and failed his action! But if Dylan made this roll out of RAGE at the monster for threatening his father, he got THREE Successes! However, the Player does have to choose which Emotion their character is using before they make their roll, of course.
This is why it doesn't matter how _____ a character is in I WAS A TEENAGE CREATURE, as long as they're ____ enough. On an urban fantasy TV show, the audience is well aware that the Hunter is skilled and the Fae is cunning and the Ghost moves in an eyeblink...it's why they're doing the amazing things they do that counts! The audience is watching to see how the characters respond to the dire situations they find themselves in; IWATC is about those responses and how the characters feel, not about how powerful they are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I WAS A TEENAGE CREATURE is set in Signal  Lakes, the suburb immediately south of Miami...which happens to be the western tip of the Bermuda triangle. Paranormal creatures and forces are drawn there, with new ones showing up all the time. The Player  Characters in IWATC can be any of ten different Creature Types, each associated with one of the game's eight  Emotions. The ten Creature Types included in the base game are:

Character creation in IWATC uses a point-based system, so Creature Types that start with multiple paranormal Abilities, like Vampires and Werewolves, cost more than those that require points to be spent on customization, like Casters and Fae. Character Creation Points are also spent on Skills, Capabilities, and Feeling Factors, which are aspects of a character's personality or history that affect their starting Emotional State, such as a CHEERFUL character having a lower HAPPY-SAD rating, or a character who has suffered a LOSS having a higher rating. Players can build their characters any way they want, taking whatever Traits they feel describe the character they want to play.

I want to remember it the way it was. Review of The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat. Blog 61 of Disability in X-Files Series.
In writing a blog related to a disability focused watch of The X-Files, I knew I would find much to criticize about my favorite series ever on television. I, also, knew I would find episodes to be praised. In particular, I believe that the Darin Morgan episode Humbug which aired in the second season is likely the best hour of television ever produced to demonstrate that the perception of other is simply a mirror perception of what is normal to you based on your life situation. All “isms” are either a desire for power or a fear of or lack of understanding of the “other”. No episode of television that I have seen as aptly taken the viewer on a journey of changing perceptions to see the series main character as an “other” than Humbug.
Darin Morgan wrote exactly six of the 228 episodes. His series eleven contribution is funny, sweet, and thought provoking. It’s a beautiful good-bye. Always known for viewing the series with a critical eye, he successfully focuses on the series reoccurring theme (since the pilot ) of whether people who believe in the paranormal and the existence of aliens are delusional with psychiatric illness. He, also, reminds us in a sweetly, gentle way that the series sometimes used a disability as horror approach and that, while we are remembering this show in a nostalgic way, we should not forget the use of mental illness as a repeat monster metaphor. Scully’s last statement of this episode “ I want to remember it as it was.” is reflective of the fact that none of us want to look too closely at our precious memories of old. She chooses not to taste the jello at the end of the episode because she wants to remember the jello as she remembers it and not as it actually tastes.
The cold open of the episode is in black and white. The first line is “I know you think I’m crazy.” A lone customer in a restaurant is talking to the waiter about aliens. It is likely not lost on the regular viewer that the scene is filmed in the same set location and at the same counter where Mulder sat in Jose Chung from Outer Space talking to the waiter about alien abduction.
The next scene is Mulder wearing a bizarre outfit because he has been out “squatchin” and is dressed like Bigfoot. He is doing this to escape from the “madness” of watching the news and worrying that the country has gone insane. (Although how sane is a man who hunts big foot?). The inclusion of this scene serves to remind us of the extreme nature of Mulder’s fringe beliefs. He then notices an X taped to the window and he goes to his meeting place to meet with a man who seems to know him even though Mulder doesn’t know the man. In the course of this conversation the man ( Reggie) will say “There’s no way for me to make you understand without me seeming like a crazy mad man.” Mulder hears sirens and says “I think your ride is here.” Reggie informs Mulder that Mulder’s favorite episode of The Twillight Zone, The Lost Martian, does not exist.
The next scene is another scene which serves to remind us of Mulder’s more obsessive nature. Mulder is shown searching through his old videos and talking to Scully. He tells Scully that when this guy said the episode did not exist “ that’s when I knew he was a crazy person.” However, it is Mulder who, having looked through his boxed DVD sets, searched the episode guide books and searched the internet, is now looking through old VHS tapes and tells Scully he won’t be able to eat until he finds it. Won’t be able to eat “ever again.”
Reggie brings Scully into the case by giving her a box of one of her childhood memories, a box resembling jello, and telling her his fingerprints are on the box so she can help him find himself. In the first scene with Mulder, Scully, and Reggie, it is Mulder who appears the most out there, even as compared to Reggie, as Mulder brings up the possibility of parallel universes. In that scene when they hear sirens, Scully tells Reggie “It sounds like your ride is here.” At another point Mulder says, “Reggie, take it from a fellow nut.” At the end of that scene Reggie reveals that he used to be a FBI agent partnered with Mulder and Scully.
A later scene again shows Mulder acting in a way some would say is less than sane. He is puzzling in front of his bulletin board with strings to connect the pictures to a conspiracy theory that includes Ted Cruz and Bob Dylan and soy bombs. But Mulder says the world has become too crazy for even his conspiratorial powers.
Scully finally discovers that Reggie has had a series of bureaucratic government jobs including his longest stint listening to phone conversations. He seems to have enjoyed listening to Mulder’s and Scully’s. About a year ago, he suffered a nervous break down and was admitted to a psychiatric facility. As usual, Scully is judgmental and Mulder sympathetic. Mulder explains Reggie’s nervous break down in a way that might explain why he is so sympathetic. “ it’s merely the culmination of disillusionment of a man who simply wanted to spend his life in the service of the country that he loves”. (Could that explain Mulder’s own diagnosis of depression?)
After Mulder’s speech and the sound of sirens, the ambulance from Spotnitz sanitarium arrives. Reggie says “ It looks like my ride is here.” In a nod to the way that X-Files has so often portrayed persons with mental illness in other episodes. Reggie reminds the driver of the ambulance about what it takes for him to come peacefully. The driver holds the straight jacket and says “it demeans all of us”. Reggie says, “ no, it gives a touch of classicism.” As Reggie is placed in a straight jacket and an attendant holds a large net, Reggie says “remember how crazy people used to be portrayed as believing they were Napoleon?” He tells Mulder and Scully to stay safe and stay sane.
Twenty eight years after the pilot of The X-Files aired, new and old fans are still watching, reviewing, podcasting and debating the series. There are other episodes of season 11 left to review, but none says goodbye in such a bittersweet way as this one because no one else is as adept at discussing the subtlety of the “isms” than Darin Morgan. While this is a disability focused blog and this is an episode about mental illness, Scully’s statement can be applied to other categories. For instance, people who remember The X-Files as creating a feminist icon are surprised that sensibilities of our culture in the 90’s meant that rape could be treated casually in several episodes. We can appreciate the show being ahead of its time and as groundbreaking for women and still say, but by today standards it is not always reflective of feminist standards. Then we add in no decade’s standards should the casual treatment of rape have been ok. Yet, in most of mankind’s history it has been. In taking a disability focused watch, I have found more to criticize about the series than praise, but I don’t find it less than normative in the standards of its time and, in what I find to praise, it sets a standard few if any series of even today have matched. The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat gives me permission to love the series with all my nostalgia, but with a caveat not to think, in how it portrayed issues of mental health or disability, that it was without fault.

Halloween (1978) - Based On A True Story
It’s the tagline that haunts the horror film industry: Based on a True Story.
Typically, it roughly translates to “a door moved several feet so shit this is a haunted hizzle ma dudes”. Or, it represents some of the most iconic moments in paranormal phenomena.
It was Halloween (1978) that surprisingly slotted itself into the second category of films.
Halloween is famous for several reasons, indeed, it’s one of the most celebrated horror films to have graced your not-so-legal streaming site.
It’s a cult movie for slasher fans, and it’s name has centred it as a must-watch during this season. And it’s all because it echoes out those eerie vibes of urban legends, but snaps us back to the chilling reality of pyscho-killers when we need it most.
Tumblr media
It even started the slasher film craze that would tumble one corpse-domino into the following decades.
And it’s based on a true story.
Which, ya know, that’s fine, this is so fine, this is great.
So, it got me thinking: what was this true story? And are there any other similar stories that we need to know about come Halloween night?
Unfortunately, there are.
There are so many.
Today’s post is going to take us back to the story that inspired the Halloween series, the similar stories that bulked up the shocking reality of the 11-film saga, and the urban legends that still echo out these themes.
So, whether you’re carving a pumpkin, or piecing together your costume with a hot glue gun, settle in.
Let’s get spooky!
First, let’s recap the Halloween saga.
And lord, she’s a saga.
Across 11 movies we witness one plotline: this bloke, Michael Myres, stalks Laurie Strode.
No, he is not the lovable voice behind shrek.
And no, ‘shaggable’ is not used as a comical easter egg mid-murder in these movies.
But despite this basic plotline, normally a dash of back story is chucked into the occasional prequel-sequel-who’s-a-what’s-now to shake things up and drag it across 11 films.
Take the backstory of Laurie Strode - she’s his estranged sister, a connection which is dragged down to her daughter, Jamie. This is the central line that the series dances around.
Tumblr media
It’s a bit like American Horror Story - you know when every season has a different setting?
There’s been a college massacre; there’s been a hospital of horrors. There’s been more reboots then Britney Spear’s career!
But pushing aside the mess of writers chipping in a line for each screenplay, and wiping off the fake blood coating the legacy of films, one thing is for sure:
We centre on a psycho-killer who defies all psychological analysis.
Michael Myers is pure evil.
That’s the point.
Tumblr media
It’s the true fear that I think we all have - it’s this unrelenting force that’s out to get you and will not stop, will not sympathise, will not suffer nor scar.
And so we arrive at the true story behind this phenomenon of a franchise.
Unless you’ve been stuck under a rock for, what, 40 years - no seriously, I did maths and everything - then you will be oblivious to the Halloween saga.
But for everyone else, there is only one image that pops into the head when it comes to these films - and it’s Michael Myers in his white mask, and cloaked in a blue jumpsuit.
#OOTD
Tumblr media
And he is based on a true story.
The OG director and co-writer of the OG film - John Carpenter - was approached with the premise of a film many moons ago.
And let’s be honest: it’s more basic than I am.
The whole idea was that this psycho-killer slits bitches up on All Hallows’ Eve. Simple, right?
Well it was Carpenter that added the twist on Myers that sent this flick head-first into film history.
Carpenter was reminded of an encounter he had at University whilst visiting a mental institution. He came across a boy, maybe 12 or 13 years old.
And he had this look.
He had this look that he could only describe as emotionless, as pure evil - and this probably inspired this quote from the film from Myers’ psychoanalyst:
"This blank, pale emotionless face. Blackest eyes. The devil’s eyes. I spent eight years trying to reach him and then another seven trying to keep him locked up, because I realized what was living behind that boys’ eyes was purely and simply evil."
Oh, you thought it stopped there?
Oh, my little ghoul.
No, it continues.
Myers is believed to be complete and utter evil. And this is based on the historical root of Halloween.
Samhain is the celtic celebration behind the best day of the whole entire year. And in basic terms, it is the conflict between summer and winter, or, between good and evil.
Sound familiar?
Okay fine, every horror film - no, scratch that - every goddamn film is about the fight between good and evil.
But it’s Halloween that brings this up. Halloween drags it up from the depths of hell and puts a white face mask on it.
However, legend has it that there is another real life story that directly influenced it: and that’s the murders committed by Stanley Steirs.
Tumblr media
Take yourself back to 1920.
On Halloween night, Stiers went on a killing spree, going so far as to murder his own family.
Carpenter - nor, anyone affiliated with this cult series - makes mention of Stiers. But it’s safe to say that the sheer volume of murders that happen to fall (or purposefully striking) on Halloween is nothing short of inspiration.
The film might stick to the big screen, but the reality is never too far from the cinema doors.
It’s here that we turn to these real life events.
I’ve found five major events of murders, assaults and kidnapping that have collided with Halloween, mirroring the images on the big screen.
(Yeah, it wasn’t a positive google search experience.)
And none of them fall short of the actual movie inspiring this post.
We start in 1975, a mere 3 years before the original film hit the cinemas.
It was the morning of Halloween when Martha Moxeley was found beneath a tree in her backyard. She was dead, murdered via a beating with a golf club.
Tumblr media
It was 25 years later that Michael Skakel - then, a 15 year old body - was arrested and convicted for her murder. This story gained attention not for the gruesome circumstances of Martha’s death, but because of the sheltered, and famous life he had lived.
He was the nephew of Robert F Kennedy’s widow, and had spent him life swanning around the elite circles.
His alibi? Well, it’s just as disturbing as her death.
He claims that the reason his DNA was on her body was because he was masturbating underneath the tree she was found under on the same day.
These themes aren’t so unheard of in Halloween - indeed, the opening scene features the uncomfortable sex scene of Michael’s sister and her boyfriend before he stabs her to death, completing his first kill.
We then jump forward a few decades, and dive headfirst into arguably the decade of the most Halloween related murders. Indeed, given the stretch of slasher films before this decades that were spiked by the movie inspiring this post, the film itself could have figured as an ambition for these murders.
And it starts in 2002.
Chris Jenkins - a student at the University of Minnesota - was last seen alive at a bar on Halloween night. Four months later, his body - still clad in appropriate Halloween get-up - was found in the Mississippi River.
Tumblr media
This is not the first halloween-related catastrophe to be witnessed in this river.
Obviously someone falling into a river on a infamous night of parties and revelry can be seen as either an accident, or a suicide. But it was 4 years later that the death was reclassified as a homicide.
Even though someone did confess to the police that they witnessed a murder, it is still shrouded in a mystery fit for an urban legend.
Particularly as it is rumoured to be a victim of the Smiley Face Murders.
Basically, 40 male college students in the US died of drowning around the same time, and graffiti of smiley faces was found around the sites of the murder.
The murderer was never found.
Next, we turn to a similarly urban-legend like story: the murder of Leslie Mazzara and Adriane Insogna.
It was 31st October 2004, and three roommates - including those that were murdered - were enjoying Halloween night. Having handed out Halloween candy all evening, Lauren Meanza awoke to the sounds of a scuffle at 1am.
She fled the house in fear, and turned around to see someone climb out of one of their windows.
She ran back inside, only to be greeted by the corpses of her roommates.
Nearly 1500 people became persons of interest, but it was when Eric Copple - who was apart of this pool - refused to cooperate by handing over DNA, suspicions were roused.
A year later, he confessed to the murders.
No motive was given, but he was engaged to a friend of one of the victims, creating a peculiar link that must’ve inspired the events of that fateful night.
Tumblr media
6 years later, an Ohio teen encountered a similar situation.
He returned from a church service to the bodies of his murdered family, including his new stepfather, William Liske.
The killer behind the murders was found to be Liske’s son from a previous marriage who had a history of violence and schizophrenia.
2009 too witnessed a grotesque event.
3 teenage girls were held at gunpoint and abducted following an evening of trick-o-treating, and were sexually assaulted in a wood. Luckily, one of the girls was able to use her phone to call for help, causing the kidnapper to flee.
Tumblr media
When he was eventually arrested in 2012, it followed a string of previous sexual assaults that have occurred since the late 90s.
Our final murder takes us to Halloween night, 2011.
Taylor Van Diest was believed to have just left a Halloween party when she was beaten to death near railway tracks.
The story only gets ever-more terrifying considering she texted her boyfriend shortly before the attack to tell him that that someone was following her.
The police eventually found DNA of the killer underneath her fingernails, leading them to the culprit.
Traumatised? Me too.
But these tales don’t end with finished cases, and they certainly don’t end with the credits of the films they inspire.
They come back to haunt us in the urban legends set on Halloween.
Clearly, halloween-inspired murders make the most iconic urban legend concept. It’s the scariest time of year, and what’s scarier than, well, murder?
One of these legends sticks to this theme, closely mirroring the film in question.
It’s affectionately known as the 1962 Idaho Massacre. The story goes a man in a black mask attended a Halloween party in - you guessed it - Idaho.
Tumblr media
He proceeded to lock all the doors, and then murder each and every attendee of the party. Well, he is believed to have killed 7 before escaping.
He was never found. But it is still claimed that his mask was found by the FBI in 1969.
The murder train continues with the most noughties urban legend ever.
In 2008, an email chain warned people that a gang was to hold an initiation on Halloween night.
And the task that needed to be completed?
The murder of 31 women, each death a day of the month.
And in true urban legend fashion, 140 women were to be killed in another version of the email, and so the list of variants continues.
Our next tale of terror sticks to a more classic halloween story - that of the haunted house:
Well, this house either exists in Pennsylvania, Detroit, or Chicago; regardless, this is a typical and twisted tale often encountered with urban legends.
The story goes that a haunted house with 13 floors exists. I mean, fuck that’s a tall house, how did they get that signed off?
But the legal repercussions are not the frightening feature of the story.
The challenge is to make it to the top floor alive. If they do, they win some cash. If they don’t… well they're dead, so there's that.
Legend has it that no one ever made it to the top floor.
It also doesn’t exist, but anyway.
What about the campus massacres of halloween night?
Every year, from 1960 to 1998, psychics would make the same prediction for Halloween night. No points for guessing what the prediction was…
Next is the rumoured threat to animals.
Satanists have always been supposedly murdering black cats on Halloween for decades. Or maybe it’s witches capturing them for ceremonies? Or maybe its National Kill a Pit Bull Day, the all-American hoax that cropped up in 2012?
Tumblr media
Either way: no one is safe. Not even ya doggo.
Our final urban legends prey on children, and infer that they will either be drugged, poisoned, or stabbed on some sort of sharp implement.
Happy Halloween, everyone!
These are the most prevalent legends, especially since trick-o-treating and dressing up are children’s activities, even if we all like to partake - child or not.
Some real life cases have even informed the fears that candy has been spiked with poisons, such as the case of the poisoned Pixy Stix.
It was Ronald O’Bryan who spiked his son’s candy with cyanide with the ambition of receiving a hefty insurance cash payment.
There have even been rumours of temporary tattoos being laced with LSD!
The original icon for this was a blue star, but this eventually included other unsuspecting images such as Mickey Mouse.
Cause nothin’ says drugs like Disney.
Now we turn to pointy things.
Commonly needles and razors blades are rumoured to be concealed among halloween treats handed out to kids. This was even proven in 2000, when a man was charged with concealing needles in chocolate bars.
Not convinced by razor blades? What about drugs being smuggled across borders, or handed out to children?
Fact is, these urban legends could go on forever.
They twist, they turn, they come back around full circle, and they pack up shop to move to different parts of the world.
And when we finally think we are safe from the myths and legends that haunt halloween…
Tragedy strikes.
Fact is, Halloween isn’t just based on the demeanor of one psychotic teen.
It’s based on stories that happen year upon year, reminding us that urban legends are never too far from the truth.

Shaping Season 2 of 'A Discovery of Witches'—The Characters, the History, and the Challenges
by RACHEL CARRINGTON geeks media
Tumblr media
A release date for Season 2 hasn't been revealed.
When A Discovery of Witches, the paranormal drama adaptation of Deborah Harkness' All Souls Trilogy, debuted in September 2018, no one could have predicted the overwhelming success of the series. With the program being renewed for Seasons two and three, fans are eager to learn as much as they can about Matthew Clairmont, Diana Bishop, and all the characters that make up this fantasy world.
This couldn't be more evident than by the Amazon ranking of the first book in the All Souls Trilogy, which is aptly titled A Discovery of Witches. As of this writing,  it's currently ranked #26 in Vampire Thrillers and #29 in Witch and Wizard Thrillers. And the book released in 2011. The second and third titles in the series are ranking even higher in similar or comparable categories while a companion to the series, The World of All Souls: The Complete Guide to A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life (All Souls Trilogy), which was released in 2018, is a number one bestseller in Horror and Supernatural Literary Criticism at Amazon.
Fans are magnetized by the characters existing in the All Souls Trilogy and for those following their journey as it plays out on television screens, it's a dream come true. And while Matthew and Diana take the lead in the series, the world would not be complete if even one character was removed. Deborah Harkness agrees, saying there are no minor characters in the trilogy.
All of them are make or break characters to me. I think of Sorcha Cusack, for example, who plays Marthe. She is an absolutely crucial character in the All Souls world, the one person who knows ALL the history that is relevant to the story. She knows even more than Philippe did! It was crucial to me that the role of Marthe be cast perfectly. It would ruin everything for me if she weren’t superb. And she is. Sorcha IS Marthe. The same is true for all the cast. Philippe is no more or less important than any of my other characters to the unfolding of this complex story. I like to say that there are no minor characters in the All Souls Trilogy, and would like the same to be true for the dramatization.
Tumblr media
Teresa Palmer and Sorcha Cusack/A Discovery of Witches
There is little doubt that the casting directors were challenged to choose actors that could become these characters so convincingly that fans would hereafter connect them with their namesakes. As Harkness says, "the casting directors for both Series 1 and Series 2 are looking specifically for cast who can embody the characters, rather than slavishly going for a specific “look.” And with Season two taking the series into the 1590s, all eyes are on the next batch of actors to step into the All Souls World as the new time period brings its own set of challenges.
Maintaining historical accuracy will be a tough mission for the crew behind the scenes of A Discovery of Witches. The Elizabethan era is known for its lack of hygiene and overpopulation. History buffs may be expecting a certain look and feel to accurately depict the era. And, according to Harkness, the show will "strive to give viewers something that an Elizabethan person would recognize, if presented to them." But she does caution that the color palette will be different and adds, "people will not be filthy. City streets will not be filthy. We are not in Victorian or Georgian London, where the infrastructure of the city has collapsed under the weight of the steeply rising population."
It isn't unheard of for lighter historical dramas to take license with the look and feel of the past, changing everything from the clothing worn in the time period to making life seem a whole lot easier than it was. But Harkness assures that A Discovery of Witches is going for something "grounded, authentic, and as accurate as we can make it."
Still, she admits that some people will be nervous because "it doesn’t “look” like what people have seen on screen before; and that...challenges expectations. But that’s how we learn: by being a bit nervous and uncomfortable as we put our preconceptions and prejudices aside and embrace the past on its own messy, complex, and fascinating terms."
And fans of the book series that have watched the adaptation will freely admit they were nervous about the actors that would be portraying Matthew Clairmont and Diana Bishop because of the established rapport and chemistry. Episode one of the first season allayed their fears with perfect casting of the couple and the characters that make up this world. So while it will be a wait to discover who will embody future characters, more than likely, the wait will be worthwhile.
Tumblr media
Matthew Goode and Teresa Palmer as Matthew Clairmont and Diana Bishop
And speaking of wait, while preparations for season two is underway, there will be quite the lag time before it makes its debut. At present, it has not yet been scheduled, and while that can make viewers and fans anxious, it also presents them with an opportunity to get to know the present and upcoming characters in the second season.
The television series doesn't have the opportunity to delve in to the backstories of all the characters, but the books upon which the series is based provide a treasure trove of information that may never make it to the screen, offering intricate elements that shaped the characters Harkness created.
Though A Discovery of Witches has many fans who haven't read the books, Harkness believes viewers don't get the full picture without reading the series.
I don’t think the viewers get the full picture without reading the books. I would say the same thing to readers who haven’t watched the show! There are many different perspectives brought to light in the show that readers won’t get the chance to catch up with for a while in novel form. Similarly, viewers might want to take a deeper dive into Diana’s mindset by reading the books. It’s up each individual, really.
There is plenty of time between the first and second seasons to learn more about the witches, vampires, and daemons populating this world. Of course, those readers still on the fence about viewing the television adaptation can take heart that the series does the books justice, and with the first season coming in at just eight episodes, there is plenty of time to binge-watch before Season 2.
