A/n: I actually wanted to create a series with princess!reader but i wasnt sure.

“Y/n suck it up” “suck what up?” “Your stomach” you took a deep breath in and grunted when she pulled thhe strings of the corset.

“Fuck you” you sighed, holding onto your stomach while she laughed “you have to dance with him, theres no way around it” zendaya said, tying the strings together while you complained.

“Im not dancing with him! Ill just dance with timothee” you commented, wiping the sweat from your forehead before she grabbed the hoop skirt, telling you to step into it.

“You’re becoming queen and toms becoming king. There’s literally nothing you can fucking do” she muttered, picking it up and putting it on your hips, quickly closing it. “Im not happy with that”

“Honey please. Clearly” she glared at you, and you smacked your lips and raised your hands in the air, the detailed white skirt, small roses and small patterns, coming over your head and down ontop of the hoop skirt.

“Beautiful” she smiled, looking at you in the mirror while you stood there shoulders slumped. “I look like one of those creepy baby dolls”

She hit you in the back making you stand up straight “you wont get anywhere with that attitude, you go in there with confidence and your head held high. For tom..... i dont know what hes gonna do but dont let that ruin your mood”

“Thanks that means so much-“ “shut up” she ordered, eyeing you as you kept your lips sealed tight. She grabbed the heels and bended down on her knees, snatching your foot making you almost fall.

“You know i couldve had someone else doing this for me. You dont have to-“ “i need you to look your best, princess” she muttered, slipping the shoe on and doing the same with the other.

“Im not marrying that scoundrel, harrison” he said, his helpers helping him while harrison watched, laughing at him. “If you wont i will,” “shut up” “you dont even like her” “so?”

He stared at harrison with daggers, while harrison played with a smirk on his face. “It cant be that hard. Just a dance and youd never have to make contact again” timothee shrugged, swirling the ice in his glass.

“You dont know i feel towards her” tom whispered. “Well you obviously hate her, but shes the most beautiful woman in this palace, everyone thinks so!”

“Eh id rather marry zendaya” “zac will kick your ass” harrison said, “thats besides the point” “tom just be quiet” tim said and tom furrowed his eyebrows at him.

“You literally talk about her all the time. If you have such a problem let one of us dance with her” he offered. “Why would i do that?”

“Because you hate her!” They both shouted at him. “I-i dont hate her....i just have se negative feelings about her”

“Then why do you talk about her all the fuckin time?”

He didn’t know how to answer that. He didnt know if he loved you or hated you. It was whatever he felt in the moment.

And that left him with a sigh and a shrug “i dont know”

“You look absolutely stunning!” Zac said, his arm wrapped around zendaya while Had a smile in her face. “She thinks she looks like a doll, a creepy one”

“Welp that isnt gonna get you anywhere...” “exactly what i said!” “Can i please take off these heels?” You asked hopping on one foot to scratch the back of your ankle.

“Nooo! Come on!” Zendaya urged and you groaned, walking with them following behind you.

The ball room was.....beautiful. Fancy tables and chairs everywhere, the special table on the other end of the room for the king and queen.

The room was filled, cheers and glasses clanking, laughs leaving people lips. And then someone cleared there throat loudly, when you looked over it was your beloved mother, “the queen is here!”

She walked over, the room quiet as gasps left people lips, muttering things like “since when does y/n wear ball gowns” “she looks stunning” and things like that.

Her hand found yours and you did a small smile, letting her pull you wherever as zendaya and zac found thier table.

She pulled you to your fancy table. “Now y/n i need you to behave” “but maaaa!” “No excuses! Make everyone proud okay, i know that boy can be a handfull”

“How do i look?” He asked, running offly late. “I mean you arent trying to impress anyone-“ “you look great” tim cut harrison off, patting toms shoulder “so can we please leave”

And you sat there, bored, for once in your life time crossing a leg over the other and helping yourself with cherries while tom watched from afar, his mother walking him over.

“You look wonderful y/n, both of you do” she smiled, rubbing toms shoulder and looking at you. “Thank you ms. Holland”

“Please- call me niki. Were gonna be a family after all” she said, making tom roll his eyes and bite his lip, looking away then looking back. “Yeah we are” you smiled and like that it was only you two.

“I dont like you” “and what makes you think i do?” You questioned, raising an eyebrow while he crossed his arms “the least you can do is act like a gentleman, as far as anyone knows we are happy together” you said making him nod, sitting up and clearing his throat.

“Sooo.....wife” you cringed at his words but let him continue “how are we gonna do this?” You only shrugged “we can sleep in separate rooms or something” “sounds like a plan” he genuinely smiled at you, handing you another cherry as you squinted your eyes at him.

“I dont know if you poisoned this” you flicked it back at him, making him let out a small gasp before throwing it back “you arent worth my time, i would waste a dime trying to kill you” “i dont know if i should take that as a complement or not” your eyebrows furrowed and he sighed, looking away from you.

“You know, i dont know why they have such a problem with each other” harrison said to tim, currently at their own table, throwing grapes at one another and cracking jokes. “I dont think we’ll ever find out” he said in response, eating one of the grapes.

AnD iT WAs TiMe TO daNCE

The strong piano played, filling the halls as everyone watched you and tom.

You both maintained eye contact, his hand tight on the side of your waist as yours was tight on his shoulder, squeezing each others hand that was shared in each others.

“Im never doing this again” he whispered, basically nose to nose with you. “Do you think i want to?” You rolled your eyes. “I dont care if you want to! I just know im not doing this”

“Well grea-“ he dipped you and you almost gasped, frightened making tom silently chuckle before lifting you back up, now chest to chest.

“Your a fuck-face” you muttered. “You love it” he shrugged, “why are we doing this anyway”

“I dont know, why do you hate me?” He asked making your jaw drop. “Why do you hate me?!” You aggressively whispered.

“They look happy” zendaya said, zac, haz and tim all circled around the same table as they watched intently “ehhh” they all let out at the same time, in their own bubble, tim leaning back in the chair and Harrison slump with his legs open, zac resting his face on his knuckles as he silently blowed spit bubbles.

“I hate you because you hate me!” “I only hated you because you hated me!” “Bullshitttt” he bit his lip and you aggressively stomped on his foot with the edge of your heel.

He let out a small whimper and a fuck you making you have a smile on your face. “Dont cuss at me” “im pretty sure my foot is bleeding, fart face” “shut up” “but you literally called me a fuck face!”

“Shush!” He still whimpered in pain when he moved, “im sorry” you said, feeling guilty. He did a small smile “that isnt gonna make my foot better is it?”

“Well what the fuck do you want me to do! Kiss it?” “That wouldn’t be so bad” you groaned and looked away from him, to keep yourself from looking at him you easily pressed your head on his chest, making his breath hitch and his heart spead up, the piano relaxing a bit so you both moved slowly.

“Awwww” everyone said together making tom blush hard, your arms came up to circle his neck while his silently made its way to your waist. “Y/n why are you doing this?” He asked, whispering in your ear as you let out a small “i dont know”

“Well- can you n-not?" “Not what thomas?” “Be all bubbly with me!” You looked up at him with your eyebrow raised “im not being bubbly”

“Yes you are!” You sighed in response “but dont you feel better! Not everything has to be so negative” “well this is bluntly awkward” “well then stop making it awkward!”

“Yeah they are in love with each other” zac said, everyones eyebrows furrowed as they looked at you both, a different look and vibe coming from the both of you.

The piano slowly ended, you and tom panicked.

“Kiss me!” He ordered. “Why would i do that! We barely even get along!” “As far as they know we are a happy cuddle” he mocked your voice. “Im still not kissing you” “if you dont kiss me im gonna kiss you”

“Fine-“ “hurry up!” “You sound loke you really wanna kiss-“ before you could finish he pressed his lips on yours, his hand pulling you closer as his other hand came up to the side of your face, and SUPRISE you fucking kissed back!

Although you both you never would never admit it, you both loved the kiss.

Your lips where soft and to your suprise his lips werent chapped, his hands were gentle on your face as you also pulled him closer, your arms still circled around his neck.

Everyone at the tables jaw dropped, zendayas more but that didnt change the subject that you both kissed, and it looked like you both were gonna sit like that till end of time.

“No fucking way” haz muttered, looking at everyone else’s expressions and they were the same.

An audible noise came when you both pulled away. “That- that uh....wasnt s-so bad” he did a small awkward chuckle. “Yeah.... i uhhhhh”

“Uhhh” you both looked away from each other before tom pulled you back to your private table.

“Im still shocked” tim said, everyone agreeing as everyone else clapped for them. “So they just decided to love each other” zac shrugged, “yeah something like that”

After that whole thing was done, daya, tim, haz, and zac locked you all in toms bedroom for questions. “What is this about?” You asked, taking off your heels and getting undressed infront of everyone.

“You and tom” his eyebrows furrowed as he started to get undressed himself. “What about it?”

“Uhhh helllooo! Are we gonna act like that fucking kiss DIDNT happen?” Daya waved her hand in the air, before crossing her arms. You and tom silently looked at each other “it was his fault”

He smacked his lips and threw himself on his bed, throwing a tantrum, kicking air. “I thought we werent gonna tell anyone!”

“So you admit it!” Haz said, a wide smile on his face as he clapped his hands. “Zendaya the corset please” you said, she came over and undid it for you. “Can i have a shirt please?” You asked, looking back at tom and he nodded getting up, searching through his drawer.

“SINCE WHEN WERE YOU BOTH BUDDY BUDDY?” Tim said, and tom shrugged “I guess we just feel differently about each other”

“And it was because of that kiss wasn’t it?” Zac smiled while daya had a childish look on her face. “It’s happening! Give me my money!”

“You guys betted on us?” You asked, thanking tom when he handed you a shirt. “Wait wait wait wait, what the actual fuck. What in the fucks is going in here because this is confusing!” Haz said, getting a headache “i swear if that kiss never happened they would be ripping each others head off”

“Zendaya more loose please!” You said and she eyed you, “help her tom” she said, crossing her arms. “Uhhh...okay” he shrugged, walking over to loosen it more.

“HUH?” Everyone shouted, watching as he loosened it and then made you turn around to loosen the front. “Somethings not clicking-“ “no because this isnt adding up”

You put the shirt over your head and pulled the corset off of you under your shirt, he helped with the hoop skirt since you already took off the actual skirt.

“Im really confused” zac said, sighing as everyone who betted gave zendaya 100 bucks, including him.

“We all are, zac” tim muttered, crossing his arms as he watched you both communicate. “Tom when your done lets talk!”

And timothee and tom went outside of the room, tom leaning against the wall as he waited for him to speak. “Youre only doing this because we said something about her, right?”

“I dont know what you’re talking about, timothee” “yes you do. Youre only doing this because you know i have feelings for her” “I actually didnt know that but okay”

“Yes the fuck you did” tim pushed him, toms eyebrows furrowed as he pushed him back. “No i didnt” tim pushed him to the floor, a large thud heard making you all whip your heads to the door, hearing a punch made you walk slowly to the door.

“You knew i had feelings for her and you took her away from me, you dont even like her!” “What?” You whispered, looking over at zendaya before they all rushed to the door, ear hustling.

Tom tackled him to the ground, aggressive punches thrown at his face until tim rolled both of them over, now his turn. “I hate you! You were never there for her! Made her mad- sad- and everything that she doesnt fucking deserve!”

You decided it was time to come out, opening the door and telling them both to stop, Zac pulling tim off of tom and Harrison holding tom back.

Tom sent daggers at tim while tom did the same. “And now she likes you. Ive been working so fucking hard to win over her heart but you- you have to ruin everything” tim finished, pushing zac off of him before turning to you.

“I hope youre happy” he scoffed and walked passed, flipping tom off. “Wait!” You said, chasing after tim while tom looked back, jaw clenched as he watched you run off.

“Y/n leave me alone” “i just want to talk” you caught up to him, both of you power walking. “I never knew you had feelings for me timothee! If you would’ve told me sooner I would’ve never done the thing i did today” you said, looking at him while he still looked ahead, before he looked at you.

“Im not mad at you y/n. He-he knew that i had feelings for you and he took advantage of it, i-i” he sighed and you pulled him into a hug, “im sorry”

chapter 4

You were nervous. Even more nervous than on your first day of college. You were so nervous you even thought about what you were gonna say to him as a first greeting.

Insanity.

Besides the fact that you looked absolutely amazing your knees were weak as you were walking out of your last class. You had put on a summery dress with some sneakers and even applied makeup just to look your best for when you met him. Not that anyone should change their appearance for a boy/girl, you felt better knowing you dont look like just fell into a dumpster. And with your usual messy bun and a sweater you did.

You saw him standing in front of the building with his phone in his hand. And he looked fine as hell.

With that cream-colored button up and those jeans he looked like a fucking god.

„Hey." you smiled at him as you got closer.

He looked up and scanned you before replying:"Hola. Cómo estás?"

He gave you that glance you hadnt seen in many boys' eyes. The way he looked at your body made you feel confident, you felt pretty again.

Its been a while for you to feel like a guy really appreciates you.

„You look beautiful! How come there's not 10 boys following you everywhere?" he chuckled at his own joke.

You blushed instantly.

You did feel good because it was him telling you he liked how you had dressed.

„So, how was your day?" you asked as you both were walking down the street next to each other.

„Boring so far, I was just at home. I woke up an hour ago."

Laughing you looked at him.

„Wow."

Arón smiled at you.

That smiled made you feel so incredibly happy.

„Alright tell me something about you before we talk about business." he exaggerated the word „business" as if it was a secret mafia plan or something.

You basically told him the same you had told Itzan the night before. Why you were here, your friends, family and basic hobbies.

He listened carefully and didnt even interrupt you.

When he realized you wouldnt continue talking he spoke:"So how long are you staying here for?"

-„A semester. I started on Monday, October 3rd and I'll be staying until March 16th I think?"

Arón nodded. „No chance of staying longer?"

You chuckled. „Maybe, If I really wanted to I could maybe do another semester but I'd have to talk to my professors here and in (your home country)"

He smiled satisfied with your reply.

You guys continued walking through the tourist-filled streets of Madrid and he told you some things about either sights you passed or general knowledge about stuff when you asked him something.

Then he suddenly smiled at you and pointed at a light blue house across the street.

„We're here; thats my favorite coffee shop."

You followed him into the café, smiling immediately when you saw a little cat on the floor.

„Naw is it a cat café?" you asked and bent down to touch her soft fur.

„Sí, claro." Arón replied and then sat down at the table right next to where you were standing.

„Come on y/n. I need to tell you about the video."

You laughed at him, let go of the cat and finally sat down across from him.

„Okay start." you exclaimed as you were sitting there calmly, waiting for his explanation.

Arón took a deep breath, folded his finger on the table and started talking.

„Okay so, you listened to the song right?"

You simply nodded.

„Alright, i doubt you understood what it was saying so I'm going to explain it to you.

It basically shows that „I" have found someone that makes me happy and she seems to like me too. So the video is going to be very cute and romantic and stuff.

In the first scene my friend and I thought we'd walk through the city, just sightseeing and then maybe getting some food together.

Then we want to take some shots at a bar, dancing and some drinks you know. As well as some shots sitting on a rooftop, cuddling and doing couple stuff.

And if you'd be comfortable with it, we'd include a small kiss at the end. But only if you want to, i think it would be a nice ending as the song fades but if that crosses the line, its totally cool. We dont have to do that."

You had listened carefully and thought about doing all these things with Arón. You didn't exactly have a problem with kissing him but since you kind of had a tiny little thing for him you wanted your first kiss to be in private, not in front of a camera.

But on the other hand you didnt know if he liked you back so you agreed immediately since it could maybe be your only chance to kiss him.

„Oh perfect! Thank you, i think its gonna be a great video." he smiled at you.

You sent him a small smile as well, still thinking about the fact that you were going to kiss this handsome Spanish actor.

„You sure I can do this? I've never acted before."

He nodded and spoke right after:"Of course, you're gonna do amazing. Just pretend there was no cameras."

Slowly you nodded.

„So we're cool on this side? You're comfortable with the scenes or do you have some other ideas as well?"

He suddenly asked after a while, sipping on his previously ordered milkshake.

„Yeah, its fine. I'll think of something."

Arón smiled at you brightly.

That smile made you happier again.

„When are we going to start tomorrow?"

You asked him.

He checked his phone for a quick second and then spoke:"Is 3 good for you? If we do the <walking around, having food> scene fast, we can film the night scenes right after taking a break or something."

-„And where's the kiss gonna take place?" It just happened, you didnt mean to say it.

Arón laughed a little before finally speaking:"We wanted to maybe shoot the last scene at my place, sitting on the couch with a drink and then end the video with a kiss. Dont worry, you dont have to make out with me or anything, just a quick little kiss."

You replied:"No, no i wasnt worried, just wondering how this was going to happen tomorrow."

He nodded understanding.

You guys then kept on talking about pretty random things, had some milkshakes and even shared a slice of chocolate cake. Arón was super into eye contact you figured. He never took his eyes off of you, for you on the other hand it was really hard to maintain looking at him.

Not because you didnt want to, more like because you werent used to a guy „staring" at you for longer.

„How many people are gonna be there tomorrow??"

Your sudden panic came to show.

Arón seemed to notice the nervousness in your voice because he leaned forwards to get closer to you and spoke softly:"Tranquila y/n, not many. Just me, my friend who helped me write it and 2 guys for the camera and sound and all that. Its gonna be fine, I'll be there to guide you, i promise."

<he was going to be there to guide you> that sentence replayed in your head over the course of about a minute until you dared to speak again.

„What if I mess up, what if I look into the camera, fall and bleed or even worse, fall and die?"

Arón bursted out laughing, which made you frown at him.

„Y/n." He placed his big hand on top of yours.

You stared down at your hands for a second before looking up into his brown puppy eyes.

„You wont die, I promise."

Hey there so when i turn 18, im buying a 2003 nissan 350z with my own money. Right now im 17 and have been driving an old civic for almost the past 2 years and have never gotten in an accident or ticket (not that that lowers the insurance at all) and have the good student discount. so i followed the rule of thumb to buying a car thats okay to beat up when you first start driving. anyways, ive been looking for a lot of answers to my question, but all of the people asking it seem to be paying for theyre own insurance. Im on my parents plan, and when i buy the car its going to be put under my dads name (he is 52 and is a teacher btw if that matters). Of career, family, and love life.

I cant believe that Im now at a point of deciding for my future. The biggest decision I had to make was 7 years ago after SPM, tryna figure out what course to take and which scholarship shall i apply for. The next 7 years was sealed on me dedicating my life to pursue medicine, and now that’s done and dusted.

I found myself at this heavy junction again, having to make a decision that will determine not just the next 7 years of my life, but probably the rest of it.

Upon graduating from college, I now need to apply for my housemanship, which is basically 2 years of compulsory training as a doctor. Some facts that might help you understand this better.

1. There are 6 rotations for housemanship; o&g, paediatrics, medical, surgical, emergency med and orthopaedics. Each lasting for 4 months. so 6x24 makes its 24 months which is 2 years.

2. You might get extended in those posting for another 2 months, so 2x6, brings us to an additional 1 year. ( Reasons for extension are highly variable)

3. All hospitals in Malaysia is known to have a malignant department. It is never set in stone that if you’re the best student in your class, your housemanship would be smooth sailing.

4. You can only change hospital in the same state, after 1 year of working.

5. You are the lowest of the lowest in the hospital food chain. Eating, sleeping, going back home in time for dinner would be a luxury.

Anyway.

5 years ago I was pretty set on doing my ho in Sabah. They have nice places to visit there, the allowance is big, and there’s no better time to work hard and earn money than the beginning of your career. However, when Dad started falling ill, I was then determined that I should/will/must do my ho in hukm. At least I could take care of him whenever he’s admitted. On nights when he’s lonely, I could just wear my white coat and doze off at his bedside. If mom is not feeling well, i’ll be around and be the first one to attend to her needs. I was away for so long, its now my time to stay home.

But a few things have changed since. Each with big consequences, that i feel so torn apart being pulled in so many directions.

Firstly Dad died. I wont even go to the emotional roller coaster this has caused me, but he died. Even before i got to take care of him. Even before i came home as a doctor. I looked at my mom and in my heart i feel there’s no way i would leave her now. But my relationship with mom was never really good to begin with. What keeps me safeguarding her is my personal conscience and responsibility as a daughter, rarely out of love. She was never really happy with what I do. Of the few months that I am properly home, she supported me, helped me out with my own chores (yes, even at 25) when i had a job and she mothered well. But i also have this itch that she never really liked me. With dad being no longer around, she dominates the whole vibe in the house. She would comment on every single thing i do; the clothes i wear, the route i chose when taking her out, the food i eat, the friends i see- because I am living with her under the same roof, she has this sense of control over me. Which of course i am very uncomfortable with, and which i also know, wont be a problem in the first place, if im not constantly home.

I also do understand at 25 years old, this is the point of my life where i need to serve my family. Before I ran out of parents to serve.

Ok, thats the family situation

So the second thing to consider is A. It just so happened in my last year of med school i fell in love with a guy from Muar. Omg that is so cheesy. But yes, I met someone that i legit think I want to spend the rest of my life with. Keep in mind, that he too has the same “its the time for me to be with my family” notion in his head.

This wouldnt be a problem if like him, I can say ok lets just do our ho separately, maybe save up for a year till its enough for us to get married, finish our ho respectively and finally after three years apart we will be together.

Hah. Not when everything that involves distance fell apart in my life. I could not bring myself to agree with the idea of maintaining the relationship for three years, during our housemanship. It doesnt make sense at all in my head, to stay loyal to an idea. The ideal situation would be to stay together, either me in Muar, or A in Selangor, but again, would you risk it all for an idea?

I operate on logic and not fairytales. Love fades, relationship gets messy but come hell or high water, family stays.

But you want love, you need love, and sometimes you do believe that love wins. I could be in a room full of people and still feel lonely. Its when A arrives that i feel whole again. Recently I spent a whole day meeting friends while A was busy at work. I thought i had fun and sure it was nice catching up, but it was only at the end of the day, when I got to sit down with A for a late dinnner, i felt genuinely happy. The peaceful kind, the why the hell watching him sip tomyam is bringing me so much joy kinda happy. His presence just ignites something in me.

Worn out, yet loved.

A’s pants can be up to his tits and i’d still find it weirdly adorable.

Nothing tempts you to dip your toes into the pools of alcoholism like tropical rum based drinks. Drinking rum is like going to a party you didnt plan on attending, but after a few Mai Tais youre not only hosting the party, but likely getting kicked out of it at some point. Save the lounging for your inevitable hangover and spend that time cursing America and everything it stands for. So, kind of the way you spend the rest of the year.

My Presentation

My presentation and the main concept of my final major project is looking at the negative effects of a camera, that intrudes privacy and dehumanises people, and how it has changed society. Photography has always had a lot of ethical gray areas, and Im interested in what makes people react differently to photographs, why some are seen as okay but others aren't. In what situations is a camera appropriate but in others not, and how the use of a camera has affected our generation and its authenticity.

One influence for this topic is my interest in photojournalism, Photojournalism is the practicing of communicating news by photographs, and is always providing reasons for controversy as images are often explicit. I want to look at what distinguishes between an images been ok, and not ok.

These images here are from the same time, September 2015, when the refugee crisis was at the height of every news story and we were inundated with new stories every day. The image on the right was a massive influence on the way that people responded to the crisis, as it was so shocking, and really resonated with people on a personal level. However, there was a large outcry after this image was published as many found it too explicit and tragic to be on our front covers. But it was the truth and it made people change, so why wasnt it ok to be published? It differs greatly to the image on the left, whose colour is edited and which has a dreamy depth of field, the subjects look happy, and its portrayed to look joyful and beautifully photographed - which is a completely fake portrayal of the refugee crisis. It makes me wonder if we only want to see edited versions of lives, because real life images are never accepted graciously.

This image by Stanley Forman is from 1975, but raised the same kind of issues. It was again published on the front cover of a newspaper titled Fire Escape Collapse, and went on to win awards for World Press Photo of the Year and a Pulitzer Prize. However the children were in fact falling to their death and so there was outrage at the image being so highly commended as it was argued by many that it takes away the dignity of ones human death. Many wrote to the newspaper expressing their feelings yet the editor defended the photographer in a statement that concluded:

“I recognize that printing pictures of corpses raises all sorts of problems about taste and titillation and sensationalism; the fact is, however, that people die. Death happens to be one of life’s main events. And it is irresponsible — and more than that, inaccurate — for newspapers to fail to show it, or to show it only when an astonishing set of photos comes in over the Associated Press wire. Most papers covering fatal automobile accidents will print pictures of mangled cars. But the significance of fatal automobile accidents is not that a great deal of steel is twisted but that people die. Why not show it? That’s what accidents are about. Throughout the Vietnam War, editors were reluctant to print atrocity pictures. Why not print them? That’s what that was about. Murder victims are almost never photographed; they are granted their privacy. But their relatives are relentlessly pictured on their way in and out of hospitals and morgues and funerals.”

in addition to this, the idea of editing what we put into the public eye has swung so far in the opposite direction that these days, outside of the news, almost nothing we see is real.

photographers whose subjects are celebrities, or better known papparazi, have been at the root of many disasters. The word paparazzi derives from the word pappataci, which is italian for small mosquito,suggesting that a paparazzi is an annoying buzzing creature. It then entered the english language and refers to an intrusive photographer. They are responsible for the most widely seen images we have in contemporary culture, and whilst not ideal, its true that they make thousands of pounds or dollars from a single image. They inhabit a weird form of postmodern journalism thats seen as both despicable and a part of the media we indulge in. They have a history of invading the privacy of celebrities, whether its waiting outside their homes or sneaking into their hotel rooms. Perhaps the most extreme case of paparazzi torment is that surrounding Princess Dianas death. A leading theory suggests that the reason her taxi driver was going so fast was to escape a following photographer. This was a particularly serious case, and although some regulations were changed after this incident, ((including that legally ‘Journalists must not engage in intimidation, harassment or persistent pursuit.’, )) its still a very big part of todays culture. However, whilst for some its an invasion of privacy, for others its their money maker. Certain celebrities who are famous for they lifestyle, what they wear, who their with, and what their doing, they rely on these images taken to keep their fanbase updated on their movements and therefore cant have much say in stopping it from happening. So its difficult to stop a culture such as this as for some it may be torment, but for others, its their job.

Further on from this, and my last point into exploring the intrusive sides of a camera, is the devices that we use them on. Im not sure if any of you saw this article, where a photographer created a series of photos of people engaging in their phones, but edited them out of the picture to show the true reality of what was happening. This caused a lot of reaction and showed the harsh reality that we forget day to day of how people are so absorbed in their phones that they dont engage with people. The photographer, Eric Pickersgill, created a short video explaining his series, which to conclude is about how we kind of notice, but tend not to act upon these addictions. He also mentions how its easy for him to photograph people on their phones, as they dont notice him. As a photographer myself I can relate to this, as if photographing people, you know its safe to capture someone who is on their phone, as they wont see you. But it also can make you feel slightly uncomfortable, as I more often than not now, almost feel bad for taking a photo, as I feel like theres a line between just enjoying an experience, and capturing it on your phone. (And i barely even take photographs of anything anymore because i want to enjoy the moment.) We've seen this before however, at concerts perhaps, where people barely watch or join in with the performances because they are filming it all on their phone. We have come to a day and age where people are so infatuated by their phones that they almost don't even know whats going on around them anymore. Its become part of our culture, to spend any spare time we may have, endlessly scrolling and looking at photos. We are exposed to a greater amount of worldwide information than we ever have been, as we have such great access to photos of people and places from all over the world. This is great, as people are travelling more than ever, and using this source as a way of maintaining contact with people from all over the world, however it can sometimes be a little overwhelming just how much we are exposed to. Its said that the average mobile phone user checks their phone around 200 times a day, and in a survey of college students 94% said they would feel troubled if they didn't have their phone with them. As a generation we are addicted and we are constantly posting or taking some kind of photo or video. I really want to explore the effects that this has on people, on authenticity, their relationships and their actions, as well as their feelings. My main concentration would be in fact authenticity, as I very much feel like as someone who doesn't really have any specific career path in mind, it can feel quite daunting to watch what everyone else is doing in their lives, and appearing successful on their social media platforms, and to see how authentic people really are these days, and how much is influenced by what they see everyone else doing. I have a theory that if we weren't exposed to as much information as we are, of other peoples lives, and lived in a generation such as our parents, many of us would be doing very different things. I think we would be more concentrated on purely what we like doing, as opposed to what other people like and what we feel we should. I also think that this mobile technology has really altered our expectations of reality, and Im going to explore the ways in which it has, and what we would potentially be like without these cameras after all.

Short Story #27: Heist

Written: 1/22/2017

Doberman was twenty minutes late to meet up with the others, when he finally got to the van, parked discreetly, windows tinted, he gently rapped the side door with the rehearsed knock. It took a little while for the door to slide open-he could hear sounds of annoyance from the inside-so he awkwardly looked around, adjusted the strap of his duffel bag, and kicked a pebble on the ground. Finally it swung open, and he could see the others-dove, fox, alligator (or was it crocodile)-all looking at him annoyed. He tried to climb in without saying a word, and when he slid the door shut behind them they finally made sighs of annoyance.

“What took you so long?” Alligator asked, scowling at him. He swirled his hands around in the air, in an attempt to explain the delay, but he didn’t really know what to say. Being vague would be better to admit that he lost his mask, and had to waste a lot of time trying to find it. Crocodile picked up an empty beer bottle and spit into it, which repulsed dove, but gator didn’t care. “Did you at least get the guns?”

Giving a cheshire cat grin, Doberman placed his bag on top of the blueprints that were sprawled out in between everyone, and unzipped the bag to show that it was full of guns. “See, I’m not a complete disappointment.” He looked around, but his joke didn’t go over well.

Fox scowled and rubbed his bald head, something he did when he was frustrated, “If you’re going to act like this right from the start,” it was difficult for doberman to understand that accent, was it Russian, Ukranian, Turkish? He had no idea. “We might as well leave you behind. Its one thing to fuck around during planning,” to get his point across he jabbed a finger into doberman’s chest, “but this is when shit gets serious, you fucking asshole.” A lot of tough talk from a guy whose party trick is to fucking juggle.

Doberman looked at the finger on his chest, knocked it away, and firmly said, “A lot of tough talk from-” but swift contact of fox’s fist to his jaw shut him up pretty quickly. Gator ran her tattooed fingers through her short, red hair, too busy staring at the guns to care. Dove was busy texting on her phone. Rubbing the pain area on his short, black beard, doberman understood that now was the time to shut up. He’d just return the favor during the heist, who was fox to treat him that way.

“You, Dove.” When fox said this she finally looked up from her phone. “Why’d you bring this guy with us. He’s a liability.”

She shrugged, “He had a connect to buy guns. We needed guns.” Focusing back on her phone, “Besides, the whole thing should only take a half hour, tops. You only have to deal with him for that long. Don’t be a bitch.” Fox grunted in annoyance, but didn’t push it any further. Doberman looked over to her to give her a pathetic smile, he’d been in love with her since high school, but she only returned with a cold stare, causing him to pull out an uzi and pretended to examine it.

Croc laughed at the scene, drooling out a brown liquid, then spit again into the bottle. After setting the bottle down, she moved the bag off to her left, so it was positioned between her and fox, and she straightened out the blueprints. “Okay, doberman. You need a recap?”

“Psh, I know this plan like the back of my hand, its you guys who probably need the recap.”

This pissed everyone off a little, fox almost spoke but just shook his head. Gator leaned towards doberman and talked slowly, “What do you think we’ve been doing while we waited on you?” It was impossible for doberman to maintain eye contact. “What? Can’t look at me? Shut the fuck up, and recite the plan then, because I have a feeling you’re all talk.” Fox laughed at this, dove smirked but still focused on her phone, it wasn’t clear if she was reacting to the situation, or read something amusing.

Doberman stared at the blueprints, put his uzi down in his lap, and pointed at the entrance of the building. “Okay, uh.. We go in through the front, masks on, armed to the teeth, and we um. We fire a couple rounds in the air, you know, to show them that we mean business. Then, we yell, ‘get down, get down’ until they listen, then we have them give us the money then we drive out quick.” He looked around, sheepishly, for approval but none was given. Fox began to rub his head again, cursing in some foreign language, and gator grabbed him by the collar.

Looking away from her phone, dove let out a sigh. “I can’t fucking believe that I let you in on this.” About to tear into him, she realized that emotionally battering him would take up a lot of time, and the guy wasn’t really worth it. Deciding that she would probably just shoot him at some point during the heist, a conclusion that fox and croc had also individually arrived at, she just shook her head and recited the plan. “Okay, first off, every thing you said is just nonsense. This is a fucking retirement home, not a bank. Did you even know that?” He looked away, and she restrained herself. Did he really expect to win her over by doing all this? “Because this is a retirement home, and because its night time, there wont really be anyone in the front except for staff. My grandma stays here, so I can swear to this. That usually leaves all of the residents in their rooms, and most of the time they’re out early, and they sleep heavily, except when they want to fuck. Which is more than you would expect. So, because of this unknown element, the risk of some horny geezers catching us as we dig through their rooms, we’re doing it on a Thursday night. Do you know why we’re doing it on a Thursday?”

“Uh… No?” When doberman said this he had to hold back a smile, he was just happy that she was paying so much attention to him.

She glared at him, looked over at the other two who were equally pissed, and then thought, fuck it. “Because Thursday is bingo night. This is their biggest night, so my grandma tells me, and all of the elderly will be out there, it that room. The only ones who stay behind are the ones who are too catatonic to be a problem. We’re going to need you,” flashing a smile that falsely made him think he was special, “you’re the most important part of this whole plan. While we go in through the back, we’ll pick through the rooms of the very few catatonic patients, while you go into the bingo room, fire a couple rounds in the air, yell ‘get down, get down’,” fox and gator started to realize what she was doing, and had to hold back their laughter, “and you gotta get the jewelry off of all of the bingo players.” After this last part was said she stroked his left arm.

Almost melting from the affection, doberman had to regain his composure. “Wait.. Why would they keep all of their valuable shit on them?”

Taking her hand off his arm, fluttering her eyelashes, pretending like she was upset, “Aw, here I was thinking you were smart, I wasn’t mistaken about that? Was I?”

Shaking his head, he affirmed, “No, no. I get it. Yeah, I’ll get the shit off of those old bastards no problem. I’ll do a better job than this fuckin juggler,” pointing at fox, “over here. A real man’s job, I get it.” Convincing himself more than anyone, he held his uzi in the air and loaded a full magazine into it, taking eleven seconds to do so.

Dove put her hand back on his arm, “Yeah, thats a good boy.” Croc hit the roof of the van twice, and it started up and began moving. They all began to put on their masks, an animal corresponding with each of their code names, and began to grab their guns, load them, and filled their pockets with spare bullets. For a moment nobody said anything, but the amount of fire power was ridiculous, they were expecting a couple pistols, just for intimidation, but dove had snatched up the only revolver. Fox was suck with an AK, and gator had a combat shotgun. Where the hell did this idiot get all of this anyway?

Examining his rifle, fox looked up at doberman, “Where’d you get all this?” He couldn’t believe any of it, and he noticed, left inside the bag, three claymores. “It all seems a little… Well.. Excessive. We’re not staging a rebellion, you know.”

Doberman grinned behind his mask, “Oh what, its not tough enough for you? Your dick not big enough to handle this amount of destructive power?”

Gator shook her head, “Seriously? Is that what this has devolved to? Fucking insults about dick size? How old are you?”

“Oh, shut up dyke!”

She grabbed him by the shirt again, “Fuck you say to me?” Fox just laughed.

Doberman put the barrel of his uzi under Croc’s chin, “I called you a fuckin’ dyke, what are you going to do about it, huh? You gonna be so tough when I blow your fucking brains out?” Dove and fox both pointed their guns at the dog, but he didn’t back down. Looking at the barrels that stared at him, he haughtily replied, “Look, you fuckers need me. Marigold said it. “

Marigold’s face started to grow hot under her dove mask, her heat beat quickened, “No names, asshole!”

With his free arm, he attempted a shrug. “Whatever, a slip of the tongue, not a big problem.” Fox gave a look to dove, she held up a hand to tell him to wait. “What matters is, you guys can’t do this job without me, dig?”

Croc simply laughed, “What is this? Are we in a mob movie all of the sudden?”

In response, doberman pushed the barrel in even deeper, yelled hysterically, “I told you to shut the fuck up!” His voice cracked at the end of the sentence. “You know what? I could blow your brains out right now, how’d you like that? We don’t even really need you for this job, we could just dump your body in the forest in some shallow grave somewhere.”

Fox nudged his head towards dove, this time she nodded but still held a hand up for him to wait. She gave a little laugh and said, “Sounds like a good idea.”

Nodding frantically, Doberman turned his head to Marigold, “Yeah, you’re reasonable you get it! Actually, we don’t even need this foreign fuck, from wherever land.”

“Croatia.” Fox was tired of explaining this.

The dog mask swung around to stare at the fox’s, “Look, was I talking to you? I might as well plug you too-”

Gator shook her head, “Again with the gangster bullshit!”

Doberman stared at her and yelled, as loud as he could, “I TOLD YOU TO-” there was a loud BANG, and his brains, skull, blood, splattered against the fox’s mask. Doberman crumpled down to his right side, and dove, holding the smoking revolver in one hand, banged on the top of the van twice, and it started to pull over.

Throwing his mask off in disgust, fox declared, in agitation, “What was that guy’s problem? Entitled shit.”

Croc gave a shrug, “I just don’t know how he thought that was going to play out.”

“Fuckers all over me,” fox tried to clean the viscera off of his denim jacket, “I’m probably going to have to burn this thing.” Gator lifted the bottom of her mask so she could spit into her bottle. Fox grabbed the corpse by the collar and yelled, “I fucking loved this jacket, you asshole!”

There was a knock on the side of the van, then the door slowly slid open. The driver, a hefty, blotchy faced, brunette in a tracksuit, stared at the scene inside in bewilderment. After taking a hit from an inhaler, she asked, “What the fuck happened in here?”

Taking off her mask, dove explained, “Just an inconvenience. We’ll have to drag this asshole into the forest and bury him. I guess we’ll have to wait until next week.”

Surveying the guns in the back of the van, the driver questioned, “Holy shit, are those the guns he brought?”

Croc displayed her shotgun, “Yeah, I don’t think he was ever sure of what was going on.”

After stepping out of the van, and walking around for a bit, fox pulled a blunt out from his jacket pocket, slightly crumpled, and held it up to everyone. “Anyone else wanna calm down before we get rid of the bastard?”

Dragging him out into the forest wasn’t too difficult, fox and gator were pretty strong, and doberman had only weighed a little over a hundred pounds, but they found a couple of bodies already disposed of in the woods, so it was difficult for them to find a good spot. They found a clearing with a large, sun bleached boulder in the middle. They didn’t dig very deep, the earth was easy to dig through since it had rained earlier in the day, and they mostly just hoped that an animal would take care of him or something. Dove suggested that they burn the body, to get rid of any evidence that they were attached to his murder, but this idea was shot down because they didn’t know how to go about it very well. However, fox’s jacket was burned, while he and the driver danced around it like pagans. For a while their collective high took over and they forgot why they were in the woods in the first place, they simply enjoyed their time there, sung, dance, and talked about their second time at attempting the heist.

After what felt like a lifetime of hanging out, their highs started to wear off, and the ominous feeling of the woods made itself more and more apparent. Marigold couldn’t explain why, but she felt like somebody was hiding in the trees, watching them, and eventually she suggested they leave. Single file, with croc in front, they walked out of the woods. The abandoned corpses were more unsettling the second time around, and some of them wondered if they would ever get out of the woods alive. Every now and then, Marigold would feel the revolver tucked into the back of her pants, just to make sure it was there. Eventually they reached the van, and some gave a sigh of relief, but the others were never worried, knowing they were the dangerous ones.
