Had a bad night, decided to watch a series. Landed on Netflix, found #TheImperfects. Watched first season in one sitting, had fun, solid show, good cast, open ending. Italia Ricci, Rhys Nicholson and Morgan T. Campbell were pretty good, got into it. Canceled Nov. 22, I HATE THAT!

Leather isa byproduct of other industries, for example the meat industry, where the skinsare a secondary in value to the meat. This is an important distinction betweenthe fur industry where the fur is the primary material sought, with the meat oflesser value as a byproduct.Leather isanimal skins or hides that have undergone one or more tanning processes.Applying this definition, rawhide is not technically leather although it isusually lumped in with the other forms. Rawhide is made by scraping the skin,soaking it in lime then stretching it while it dries. Rawhide is brittle andstiff and is used for drum heads where it does need to flex significantly, itsalso great for dog chews.

Ingeneral, leather is sold in four forms; full grain leather, top grain leather,corrected grain leather and split leather.Full GrainLeather is considered the highest quality leather, undergoing minimal treatmentin the tanning process. This leather has had the epidermis layer and or hairremoved which is then dyed. The result is a natural grain finish withoutdiminishing the strength of the leather. Skins used to produce leather oftenhave many imperfections in the way of scare damage from run-ins with otheranimals, skin diseases or marks from biting insects such as mites or ticks.Since any imperfections, defects, abrasions cannot be corrected to qualify asfull grain leather, the highest quality skins must used to produce full grainleather products.Top-grain leather has had the "split" layerremoved, making it thinner and more pliable than full grain. The surface issanded and a finishing coat is applied and has greater resistance to stains thanfull-grain leather, so long as the finish remains unbroken. With lessbreathability, top grain leather will not develop a natural patina and istypically less expensive than full grain leather.

Both full grain and top grainleathers preserve the original grain of the leather and is used to productleather products that showcase the natural look texture, look and feel of thehide.Corrected-grain is leather that has had artificial grainapplied to its surface. The hides used to Recycled Leather Fabric create corrected leather are oflesser quality than full or top grain suitable skins and have had the imperfections corrected or sanded offwith an artificial grain added the surface. Most pigmented leather iscorrected-grain leather as the solid pigment helps hide or smooth out theimperfections.

As the name implies, Splitleather is leather created from spliting the hide. During the splittingoperation, the top grain and split are separated. The splits can be furthersplit into multiple layers until the thickness prevents any further splitting. Split leather then has anartificial layer applied to the surface and is embossed with a leather grain,also known as bycast leather. Splits can also used to create suede. Thestrongest suedes are usually made from full grain splits.These common types and processes are used to create a rangeof finishes including nubuck, napa, suede, patent, buckskin, shagreen, napa andmany others.

Change Channels

I listen to radio. A lot. I listen while I edit, while I drive, while I do the dishes. I listen to get inspired and focused.

I flip around for variety: New Wave on satellite radio. San Diego public radio (morning surf report). My favorite podcasts. 1950’s jazz. Some classical. Old playlists on iTunes. I like to be surprised in my feed.

When I scroll through Instagram, I hope for that same sense of discovery and surprise. Instead, I often feel like I’m looking at the equivalent of soft rock, easy listening music. So much looks similar, safe, predictable. All one channel, one genre. I want to see photos that wake me up. I want to have my eyes stretched, to feel a range of emotions, not just the warm fuzzy feeling of two people in love.

If you think of an early medieval ballad, of Muddy Waters blues, Joni Mitchell, Radiohead, Beyonce, these artists write love songs that sound nothing alike.

To me, no matter the genre or art form, the question is does this work ring true? Do I believe it?

How do we expand the definition of a “good” wedding or engagement photograph? Can we create new channels?
