No Worries?

"A 2009 DOJ study showed that more than 60 percent of the children surveyed were exposed to violence within the past year either directly or indirectly. Children’s exposure to violence, whether as victims or witnesses, is often associated with long-term physical, psychological, and emotional harm. Children exposed to violence are also at a higher risk of engaging in criminal behavior later in life and becoming part of a cycle of violence."

This is logic. If we expose someone to violence, they’re are going to be negative effects, and yes they’ll be more likely to engage in something like it. I have seen countless studies about how parents and scholars are worried about kids being exposed to violence in video games. Playing games like Halo, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Assasins creed, Phantasmagoria, Dead Space Series, God of War, Mortal Combat, and Grand Theft Auto… just to name a few. According to Time Magazine: “Approximately 90% of children in the U.S. play video games, and more than 90% of those games involve mature content that often includes violence.” 90%. 9 out of 10 kids. On the flip side, there is a company that has produced 434 movies in the past 53 years, and has grossed over 28 billion dollars from box offices because Parents don’t think twice about taking their kids to Disney movies. Because it’s Disney, right? Hakuna Matata?

We should be worried. I don’t know about you, but a woman with a temper that causes a perpetual winter in Arendelle, Octupuses stealing voices, a women who never wakes up (but looks beautiful doing so), a teen locked up in a tower for 18 years, a fish who watches their wife die and loses their child, and lions killing each other… is kinda heartbreakingly terrifying. These Disney movies have the same mature content as these video games but many don’t realize that Disney can be pretty dark. And at last I don’t see the light.
