It dates back prior to the 19th century's League of Prizren (Lidhja e Prizrenit), when Albanian leaders banded together in response to the Russo-Turkish war, when foreign powers carved up the Balkans, taking these ethnic Albanian lands for themselves. (Years later, Albania would declare their independence from the Ottoman empire) • Politically, these are disputed lands. Dardania aka Kosovo is still not recognized as a sovereign state by many countries. Violent outbursts and protests still plague the Presheva valley, and Greece still claims Çameria aka Epirus for itself. • The dream of a Greater Albania is not solely a nationalistic one based on ignorance and pride. It is a birth right, cemented in history and written in blood. Historically, Ethnic Albania has been invaded, raped, murdered, forcibly converted and occupied by violent outside forces. Greeks, Romans, Slavs, Christian missionaries, Ottoman Turks, European superpowers, all have carved pieces of this great nation out for themselves. • To this day, Albanians are not allowed to unite in solidarity under the double-headed eagle banner. Pagan beliefs and rituals: 9th of December

I just remembered that today, in Bulgaria, we celebrate the day of St. Anne. Even though I am not the religious type, I have a couple of friends having that name and decided to wish them a happy name day. While doing so, I checked out a few facts on the Internet and found some of them very interesting. I will share some of them here.

I am not going to talk about the meaning that the church implements to this day. On the contrary, I will list down a few things my ancestors used to believe in and do on this day. Check them out!

Women prepare corn and wheat and give it away to assure the abundance of crops during the year.

It is a common belief that all spells cast tonight will be successful. The best place to do the ritual is at the cemetery.

Witches dressed as flies (moths) go from house to house to cause harm. If someone kills a fly over a candle, then he succeeded in killing one of those witches.

Young and pregnant women should not work today so they can make their labor easier.

Mothers should not work so their kids stay healthy during the year.

Working with wool is forbidden so the cattle stay healthy and the shepherds safe from wolves.

In some regions, the day is considered as a very dangerous one. 9th of December is the day of the Samodivas. Men should not go outside the village as they may meet one of these creatures and get themselves killed.

These above are just a few of the beliefs. Of course, there are many other rituals that people here perform. Do you have similar ones in your country? I will be happy to learn more about them!

"The smiling deda of Vitanovac, he was smiling as I took a picture of him as he was coming back from the fields with his cows last winter. He was one of only a handful of people who still living in the village situated between Svriljg and Bela Palanka, its a shame a lot of Serbia’s villages are dying out, due to lack of investment in agriculture, modernisation of roads and standard of living. It’s unbelievable as south east Serbia around Pirot, Temska, Kalna are on the doorstep of Stara Planina, the last great wilderness left in Serbia with its rolling hills, mountains, forests, river and fertile soil." by ritski18

I certainly don’t need Thursdays to do a #flashback ! Skopje, the capital of Macedonia is definitely one of the oddest cities I’ve been to. The city is full of gigantic statues! My #couchsurfing host/friend Martin happens to be an archaeology major and is a certified tour guide of Skopje, so he told me the stories behind these statues. Why did their government built so many (unnecessary) statues? Well, corruption and all that Jazz ... Anyhow, I absolutely loved my 5 days in Skopje - some would say that’s way too much time for a tiny city like this, but I met some wonderful locals. After my last post explaining how much I loved Novi Sad, I must say that this city not only inspired me in being my whole self, but also to push my creativity a little more beyond. In Novi Sad is where my story as street performer begun. I must say that it has to be one of the best experiences I’ve had. Doing what I love while getting something with it warms my heart so much. In the balkans, it’s not so much however is enough to survive. Nevertheless, it’s all about the fun and growing as performer. This day I saw a violinist and decided to join him in his performance, while we were looking for a spot we saw a guitarist and asked to join as well and this is the magic that happened. I was also accompanied by my very good friend whom I met in Belgrade and has been traveling for a while and is coming all the way from Perú. Not only a circus performer but also an AMAZING DJ, your company was so amazing and having your support as a friend, and brother has made me feel so good to know how amazing our cultures unite not mattering in what part of the world (LATINOAMERICA UNIDA PUÑETAA). Each day I get more and more closer to follow my dream of joining a circus someday..... I must say I have to thank all of the friends I made in this town who not only motivated me and me feel so good about it, but also the amazing people who I would meet that same day and would stop whatever they were doing to come and see me in my performances around this town. I’m so happy I got to be in this city and be part of the extraordinary art movement that happens in this town.
