“Matt’s quite forensic about getting things right, while I'm a bit scruffy. This project [Jaded Hearts] forced me to smarten up. We recorded most of it in Santa Monica — Matt has access to one room of a studio on Main Street. Sean [Payne, drummer] would pop over from the UK or send us drum tracks from home. Nic [Cester from Jet, vocalist] lives in Italy, so he'd come over and do some vocals and try to ramp himself up to match the sheer energy of Marvin Gaye.
[...] ‘I Put A Spell On You’ was one of the tracks we decided to include on the album. I knew only Screamin' Jay Hawkins’s version [...] But we mainly based it around Nina Simone’s version, so as the lead guitarust, I had to try and evoke a brass section and strings, which I did with a bloody great fuzz pedal.
[...] There’s a macho side to the Jaded Hearts Club that’s exemplified by Nic’s style of big-chested singing. In reality, he’s not an overly masculine sort of chap — none of us are. But there's something about making those girthy noises and a big, sexy row that helps all of us get a bit more in touch with our masculinity. In a fun way, rather than in a Fight Club kind of way.”
——————————————
Relevant sections from Graham Coxon’s memoir, Verse, Chorus, Monster! that I came across in a bookshop a few months ago. Here he talks about Matt Bellamy and his other Jaded Hearts bandmates, and about recording their first album, You’ve Always Been Here.
Notable to me as a Muse fan was him talking about Matt’s attention to detail as a producer, the studio space in Santa Monica, CA, picking Nina Simone’s version of a song to cover again, and the fact that none of them are particularly Masculine Rock Dudes— despite being in bands that were representative of their types of rock music for the 90s and 00s.

The Alphabet With Tomsmusictaste | Z
So this is how it ends, not with a bang but with a whimper. That's right, folks, Z is another dearth. Of course I know 'Valerie,' but I can't claim to be a huge Zutons fan, it's just that Who Killed The Zutons is an album I remember fondly as a CD my parents had in the car. As for Zebrahead, I've been very aware of them for a while, but I've never truly been into them, y'know. That said, I have enjoyed on a casual level what I've heard from them, and - fun fact - I met their drummer at the Slam Dunk 2016 afterparty! At the time I was not aware he was the drummer for Zebrahead, I just thought he was some random guy. I was not made aware of this until after he had left. Actually, I am listening to Zebrahead as I type this ,and I am vibing with it, who knows, by the time this posts I may actually be a bigger fan. I'd also like to give an honourable mention to the ZZ Top song "Doubleback," which was in Back To The Future Part III.
And thus concludes this alphabet series!
Hope you've enjoyed following along, maybe even been inspired to check out some of the lesser known bands, been infuriated that The Wonder Years weren't in the W post, and gotten to know a little bit more about my music taste.
I think the most stand-out letters have definitely been A, B, D, and especially S - lots of artists I love that begin with those letters, some that I even had to cut from the post because there simply wasn't enough room for them, but S definitely takes the crown 👑
And that was The Alphabet With Tomsmusictaste!🤘🖤

The Zutons have shared a new single from their impending album “The Big Decider” which is due out at the end of the month. The Zutons’ upcoming album has been highly anticipated by fans, and for good reason. The band has already released two songs – ‘Creeping On The Dancefloor’ and ‘Pauline’ – both filled with breezy melodies. “Ian Broudie told me the demo of Big Decider brought a tear to his…
