not really well formed thought but after finishing s2 of the wire (and just starting s3) the wire baltimore is such a horrorscape. The game is the game, and the city is this huge esoteric thing bearing down on the people caught up in it. I just finished reading the Grapes of Wrath and Steinbeck writing about 'the Bank' as this thing made up of men that isn't human anymore and becomes its own entity that is out of the control of men, and that was written in the 30s!!! . The political/judicial institutions of Baltimore crushing anyone who tries to change anything to dust metaphorically, whilst on the street ur just meat in a grinder no matter what level of power you have because the streets eat you alive.
And then out on the docks, the Sobotka family brushes up against the almost cosmic evil of international organised crime - another institution that is alive in itself, feeding the city - and it destroys them entirely.
Even the opening of S3 is the towers being demolished for development in this big ~cheerful~ ceremony that belies desperation. When they come down, the streets and the crowds are engulfed in dust and dirt...like the city is watching....

I love how in season 3 episode 4 - Hamsterdam (amsterdam?), all the people corraled into the school gym hate the cops speaking to them and don't listen but as soon as the teacher speaks, they are all quiet. I like how the show displays that the cops in that district don't show them respect, even if they are criminals by selling drugs, a lot of them are kids and its their way of life that links to all sorts of shit in the system (Stringer, a drug king pin himself having a meeting with politicians) and how one of the kids during a police search was asking the cops why they don't talk to them like they are humans. I really like The Wire
