I stumbled upon the book "The Unmaking of June Farrow" by Adrienne Young through my library and I'm about a quarter of the way through the audiobook and it's just hit me that the vibes are very "Practical Magic" meets "Outlander". Now I'm kind of mad that I haven't thought of that combination before.

Book Review: The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young
Tumblr media
The Unmaking of June Farrow is precisely the type of book I look for to usher in the cozy-spooky-quiet of fall time. Not only is there a quaintness to the setting, which nestles itself comfortably amid the farms and the flower fields of a small town in North Carolina where everyone knows each other, but there's also a magical realism element that frays timelines, blurs ancestral ties, and unravels family secrets and curses.
As the story opens, June Farrow is waiting to be claimed. For madness to take her like it has taken all Farrow women before her. She is determined to be the last of her name, to never fall in love, to never pass the family curse onto another generation. However, after her grandmother's death, a flurry of clues arrive that are connected to her mother's disappearance, leading her to step through a mysterious red door in search of answers. What she finds on the other side is both unbelievable and uncanny, but it also reveals something she's secretly always wanted.
The journey June embarks upon challenges every belief she has about herself, her family, and the history of her beloved town, Jasper, that she thought she knew. It's an intricately plotted and suspenseful tale with a slow unraveling that'll keep readers hunting for answers right alongside June.
The story itself is a bend of different genres and tropes - from murder mystery to fantasy, from time travel to thriller to unconventional second chance romance - which gives it an unorthodox pulse, making it both offbeat and comfy all at once.
If I had to categorize the book as a whole, I'd say its themes and cadence lie somewhere between Practical Magic, The Time Traveler's Wife, Dark Matter, and The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue. Reading it is like stepping through a door and into a portal world where an unsolved mystery shadows the town and love can cross any boundary of time. Perfect for anybody who likes atmospheric reads in the autumn!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Ballantine for the ARC in exchange for my review.

Book Blurb: A woman risks everything to end her family’s centuries-old curse, solve her mother’s disappearance, and find love in this mesmerizing novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Spells for Forgetting.
In the small mountain town of Jasper, North Carolina, June Farrow is waiting for fate to find her. The Farrow women are known for their thriving flower farm—and the mysterious curse that has plagued their family line. The whole town remembers the madness that led to Susanna Farrow’s disappearance, leaving June to be raised by her grandmother and haunted by rumors.
It’s been a year since June started seeing and hearing things that weren’t there. Faint wind chimes, a voice calling her name, and a mysterious door appearing out of nowhere—the signs of what June always knew was coming. But June is determined to end the curse once and for all, even if she must sacrifice finding love and having a family of her own.
After her grandmother’s death, June discovers a series of cryptic clues regarding her mother’sdecades-old disappearance, except they only lead to more questions. But could the door she once assumed was a hallucination be the answer she’s been searching for? The next time it appears, June realizes she can touch it and walk past the threshold. And when she does, she embarks on a journey that will not only change both the past and the future, but also uncover the lingering mysteries of her small town and entangle her heart in an epic star-crossed love.
With The Unmaking of June Farrow, Adrienne Young delivers a brilliant novel of romance, mystery, and a touch of the impossible—a story you will never forget.
Review:
The Farrow women are not like others and June Farrow is the last of her line... but she soon finds herself having the ability to travel in time and must solve the mystery that connects her mother who disappeared and a murdered minister and why is it that she landed in 1951 and the fact that apparently in this time she has a husband and child. In the small town of Jasper, North Carolina, June Farrow is the caretaker for her grandmother who just died, and now she doesn't know what to do with her life. All she knows is that she has begun to see and hear things, a common madness that plagues the Farrow women, and the strange mystery of her mother's disappearance. When she receives a letter with a photo of a famous murdered minister that shows him being married to her mother in the 1900s, despite her being in 2023, June begins to spiral trying to solve this mystery. Then a door appears and she finds herself being transported back into 1951 and has no clue why. June is apparently married in this time and has a daughter and now she has to figure out her family's curse, her mother's disappearance, and why she was transported back to this time. This was a really unique magical realism time traveling story with a mystery and a tiny bit of romance. Adrienne Young's writing is absolutely beautiful and the story was really interesting. I normally avoid time travel stories but this one was a really interesting one to read. If you enjoy time travel with a bit of mystery then give this a go I think you'll love it!
*Thanks Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Delacorte Press for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

This started slowly at first for me, but when I realized what was really going on, I was invested. Out of control invested. This is my favorite book by Adrienne Young so far! This is brilliant, emotional, and overwhelmingly beautiful.
June is one of the Farrow women. Over time, the name Farrow has become synonymous with madness. June is 32, and just now starting to experience some strange hallucinations, but all is not as it seems.
This story, full of mind-boggling twists, really just took off and I had the best time reading this. It's the kind of book that makes me want to slowly absorb every word, every piece, of this story. I just really enjoyed this one.
Out October 17, 2023!
Thank you, Netgalley and Publisher, for this Arc!

The Unmaking of June Farrow:
This books was probably the best book I’ve read in a while. I read this for a book club and loved it so much. No matter how hard I tried to guess, I honestly couldn’t figure out how it would end or what could possibly be happening. It really kept me guessing and I loved it. This isn’t the most detailed review but I really would hate to spoil something for someone!
I’d give it a solid 5/5 stars and I would happily read anything else Adrienne Young writes.
Currently reading:
• Almost There by Farrah Rochon
• Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake (I’ll post about the whole series at once.)
• Gallant by V. E. Schwab
• Bonded by Thorns by Elizabeth Helen
Most of my reads are for book clubs 🤭 but I’d love reading suggestions

So I just finished “The Unmaking of June Farrow” and…
I think I understand.
I’d love a novella about the “future” June and Eamon’s story.
JUST GIVE ME MORE, ADRIENNE!

The Unmaking of June Farrow
Tumblr media
Dates read: 12/27/23 - 12/31/23
“I had only one ambition in my simply built life, and that was to be sure the Farrow curse would end with me.” • The best way to end the year is with a five star read! This was the final book I fit in last year and I devoured it with hours to spare. I didn’t know much about this book when I picked up a copy at Yallfest. And I was even fortunate enough to meet Adrienne Young and have her sign it!
I’m glad I went in not knowing much about this story because it unfolded in such a beautiful and unique way.
The women in June Farrow’s family are known for their thriving flower farm and a mysterious madness that has touched every generation. After her grandmother passes away, June can no longer ignore the fact that her own hallucinations are growing more frequent. And it isn’t long before she’s thrust into the heart of a mystery that spans decades.
The idyllic small town setting in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains was so atmospheric, built with vivid descriptions and eloquent metaphors. Combined with some light time traveling, a mystifying murder mystery, and the most unique second-chance romance I’ve ever heard of. Everything related to the strong themes surrounding the importance of cultivating your own happiness, the transformative power of motherhood, and how love is so powerful it can defy the rules of time. • E’s rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
